India’s National Education Policy 2020

In July 2020, the Union Cabinet paved way to a new education policy proposing changes in school and higher education. The National Education Policy 2020 aims to universalise education from primary school to secondary level. The NEP-2020 is going to replace the 35 years old education policy of 1986 (which was once improvised in the year 1996). The policy is inclusive of new education system as well as vocational training in both rural and urban areas.


The idea of National Education Policy 2020 was first proposed in January 2015. A committee led by former Cabinet Secretary T.S.R. Subramanian handled the task of consultation regarding the new education policy. The Ministry of Human Resource Development conducted surveys regarding the same, considering the suggestions from over 2.5 lakh gram panchayats, 6,600 blocks, 6,000 urban local bodies and 600+ districts. A draft of NEP was submitted in the year 2019 by the panel led by former ISRO chief Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan which was later released in 2019 by the HRD Ministry.


The policy lays emphasis on the use of mother tongue and regional languages till class 5 along with Sanskrit and other foreign languages given equal importance.

The 10+2 system will be replaced by 5+3+3+4 structure.

Instead of yearly exams, school students will be required to attend exams only for classes 2, 5 and 8.

Coding is also supposed to be included in school curriculum after class 6.

Board exams for classes 10 and 12 will be redesigned and PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development) will be the assessment body for it.

It aims to provide students inter-disciplinary and multi-lingual curriculum.

The new policy is likely to re-introduce the 4 year multi disciplinary bachelor’s degree.

M.Phil. degrees are to be discontinued.

  1. There is no mention of differences that can be encountered in educational methods for the poor and previlged hildren and measures to reduce the same.
  2. Higher education is completly merit based depriving many students from desired education.
  3. The differences in education system of regular universities and open universities are far more to ever equalize the two.
