eFest Workshop Communities of practice

Derek Chirnside – Communities of Practice, creative facilitation in a Web 2.0 worldSome wonderful insights into this phenomenon. A wonderful mix of multimedia to illustrate concepts and principles of what a community is and how to create it. A little bit of theory (situated cognition) and seeding some ideas e.g. identity…Material from Etienne Wenger and ideas for designing a structure for a community. The following question caught my attention:

Does a community of practice need a place?
Share tools and stories e.g. housewives who meet over coffee. Elements in design – connectivity, leadership, membership, events, artefacts, projects (p17 in handout).

Bounded learning communities in formal taught courses – goals, identity, collaboration, respectful inclusion, progressive discourse and knowledge building.

Facilitation ideas: liked the one about having a task which passes from one to another \”you are it\” idea.

Used an idea called organic metaphors.

Derek told the group a little about Web 2.0 tools. We discussed things such as: what makes a good blog? Think of an expert in our field who keeps a blog. For example, Derek Wenmouth – models putting yourself into it, weaving stories, keeping it up to date. Blogs can be Vblogs (video) audio blogs.

Podcasting: mentioned ipods and recording, Audacity. Could do 6 minute audio summary of lectures and post to blog. These resources can be a nuturing tool.

Reflection – Week one – Learning Design for a 21st Century Curriculum

Step 1: Take notice & describe the experience – description of evidence

I have achieved all my goals as described in my first blog postThe prospect of carrying them all out was rather daunting, and luckily I was on leave and had plenty of time. I am not sure how I will get on once I go back to full-time work next week. Cloudworks, I have found to be completely confusing, and as such I decided to only focus on looking at a few clouds, mainly people with similar interests to what I want to pursue. In my mind, this seems a bit silly as there are so many possibilities out there but I only have limited time. I have tried to choose projects to engage with that will extend my thinking and learning. For example:

  • Project one: Ellie Brewster (Dr Sharon Collingwood) exploring learning design for creating presence in virtual worlds using open resources and mobile devices – Cloudscape

I have also enjoyed joining the discussion about learning design but it has been pretty limited regarding numbers and responses – possibly because the forum does not enable responding to posts via email.  So vaguely disappointing.

I have developed a definition of learning design for myself, and have decided to go with individualized learning design as described on my second blog post. I did not listen to the launch or attend the convergence session, but can do that next time.I have also looked at some of the readings once I managed to sort out how to access them on Bibsonomy. I visited Second Life for the first time in a couple of years – it has changed a little, and the tools and controls seem harder to find. I also want to visit some other virtual worlds such as Open Sim.

Step 2: Analyse the experience – implications of your decisions, actions, and reactions.
I enjoyed the responses to my discussion posts which has put me in an interesting position, I am now really confused about the ideal approach for learning design, and also whether individualized learning design is actually feasible. However, negotiation with the students is key to whatever tack I take though which has always been a strength anyway though I am working within organisational constraints associated with the teaching qualification I teach. Constraints such as set learning outcomes and prescribed assessments – even though negotiated assessments are offered they are within particular parameters to meet the learning outcomes. And the approach is always about designing activities and offering content, since the students (teachers) that I work with need that kind of structure. The implications are then that I need to continue to balance my preferences with those of my students in the way that I design my courses.

So I guess, by engaging in this course, I am not only extending my existing knowledge, I am also challenging my beliefs and assumptions about learning design. According to Mark Nichols, by doing this I am engaging in transformative learning. This appeals to my interest in reflective practice.

My skills in navigating a virtual world need some developing as I feel like a real beginner. I also feel it would be useful to meet up with others with some expertise. I wont be able to design for a virtual world if I don\’t fully know what the environment involves, and how easy it is to manipulate items.

Step 3: Take Action – Reflect on what you learned and how you will use this learning.
What I have learned is that there is no one way for \’doing\’ learning design.  If I forced my views on students\’ about individualized learning design – no content, activities or assessment provided by the teacher, unless in negotiation with each student – I would be as bad as the most prescriptive teacher. I still have a lot to learn about different peoples\’ perspectives surrounding learning design.

I know that I prefer to use constructivism or connectivism, but I am not fully cognisant with the latter learning theory, so I need to explore this further and the implications for learning design. I know very little about effective learning design for virtual worlds, and need to explore the literature around this.

Therefore, my learning goals for the learning design course are to:

  1. Maintain regular entries in my learning journal (blog);
  2. Explore the concept of individualized learning design further;
  3. Access and immerse myself in some of the research and literature associated with learning design for virtual worlds;
  4. Explore the practical aspects of several virtual worlds;
  5. Investigate others\’ perspectives and clouds and cloudscapes in the Mooc; and
  6. Develop my knowledge about connectivism as a model to underpin individualized learning design.

Designing “Anti-Logos” – Using Visual Satire To Rekindle Civics Education

Source: Bored Panda

We admit that we’re fanatical about the power of logos to expand student learning. A logo packs a world of meaning into a tidy visual icon. Corporate and candidate logos combine precise elements, such as color, text, strategy, replicability, malleability, recognition, branding, and loyalty. For students, if they can unpack these multiple tiers of significance, then they can truly grasp the messages stowed within each succinct icon. This is visual and cultural literacy at its best.

In our classes, we have used logos with students to develop media literacy, to explore visual civics, and to trace Olympic history. One of the ideal uses for emblems, though, lies in visual satire. Visual satire twists familiar images to convey ironic or satirical takes on society. By warping commonplace trademarks, artists (or students) can create “anti-logos.” An anti-logo turns the intended message of an insignia on its head, using the expected visual components to springboard to a higher level of parody and meaning.

Recently, anti-logos have popped up in all sorts of places:

In lessons, teachers can invite students to create their own anti-logos. Kids can choose an established symbol and then sketch a redesign – perhaps for famous novels, historical eras, scientific discoveries, or Fortune 500 businesses.
This activity incorporates five different rungs of higher-order thinking:
  • Understanding the essential components of a company’s, country’s, or person’s identity
  • Crafting a persuasive point of view about the topic to communicate
  • Designing a new version of the logo with a clear graphic representation and visual metaphor
  • Manipulating efficient language to tweak the original wording or intent
  • Incorporating the subtle art of satire to exaggerate or caricature the original message

Especially in the world of civics and government, a student’s ability to lampoon a candidate’s logo can provide a prime avenue for research into current events and for the development of individual political opinions.

EdSurge and Flocabulary have recently partnered, in fact, to redesign the traditional logo for a “teacher.” The familiar symbol of a bespectacled adult pointing to a blackboard seems out of date for modern, student-centered classrooms. They invite anyone to submit a new graphic via Twitter (@EdSurge) to rebrand the image of today’s educator. It reminds us of earlier efforts to rebrand education and the next generation learners.

To,
The Chairman
Municipal Committee
Rourkela

Subject: Need for a Library

Sir,

The residents of Basai have always looked forward to you for providing better civic amenities to this village which is fast getting urbanised. You have helped this village to upgrade the middle school to class tenth. T.V. sets have been for public viewing. But, unfortunately the village lacks a library.

There is no source of recreation for anyone. The young and old are compelled to spend their leisure time glued to the T.V. or indulging in useless gossip.

The village library can change their way of living. It will upgrade and update their knowledge and upgrade the school learning.

It will keep them abreast with new information and will equipped them with technical and scientific knowledge for improving the yields of their forms.

If a suitable plot of land is allowed, and some library grant is provided the village shall raise funds to build a small library.

Thanking you.

Yours faithfully
