There are different kinds of interpretations coming in by the users about the error. Such outages happen when some issues remain on the server-side. One reason popularly coming in that maybe the activity tracker system of WhatsApp got crashed due to overload. Some users thought it as bug hid to their phone but it has now become a worldwide problem. Firstly the users thought the issue to be a new update of WhatsApp which has stopped showing last seen. But later on, they identify it when it fails to change the settings. WhatsApp calculates the last seen relying on online status. As per the suspicion, the activity tracker system got crashed. So this might be the cause behind not showing the last seen.
WhatsApp and Instagram all are owned by Facebook. Though till now no response has come from the company nor have replied to any tweets or any other posts.
