Established in 1999, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA) became a constituent college of Nitte University in 2009. The Institution is named after its founder, the visionary, Late Justice K S Hegde, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
The college started its MBBS programme in 1953 and was affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh. Since July 2009, the college has been affiliated to Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot.

The R.G.Kar Medical College & Hospital was started in 1886 by Dr Radha Gobinda Kar, who had just returned from UK as the Calcutta Medical School. It later merged with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bengal and the Belgachia Medical College came into being in 1916. After the death of Dr RG Kar, the college was renamed after him.
