8 Misconceptions About Bengalis

Source: Google

Bengalis are always been considered as one of the most refined people all over the world. They are very culturally rich, socially aware. Kolkata is not only standing as the testimony of Indian history, but the people from Bengal have secured their place in Indian history in social, political, and literary culture as well. There remain some misconceptions about Bengalis

Bengalis only eat fish

It is a tendency to continue with ages that Bengalis eat fish only. But it is now right. Though most of the Bengalis take fish as a preference they are also admirers of meat production and other food habits. It is also true not every Bengalis not even eat fish as they do not like to.

All Bengalis are from Kolkata

Kolkata is the heart of Bengal but not all Bengalis hail from Kolkata. Many Bengali comes from Tripura, Assam as well. There are many non-Bengalis stays in Kolkata.

Fond of rice

There’s a misconception that all Bengalis are very fond of rice. But this is not true. Though their food habit includes rice at least once in a day, especially in lunch. But it differs from person to person, not all of them like to have rice.

The only desert is rosogolla

There are a variety of sweets found in Bengal. Bengalis prefer different kinds of sweets. Rosogolla is not their only dessert to have. Like there are plenty of sweets, pantua, mowa, sondesh, etc.

They greet saying “ami tomake valobasi”

“Ami tomake valobasi” means “I love you”. It never happens in any culture that when they meet to a person, greet saying I love you. Same goes for Bengalis as well. They have different ways of greeting. Though each time we learn about a language we decipher the meaning of “I love you” first. But it doesn’t imply the fact that they greet saying I love you. Bengalis say “nomoshkar” or wish good day saying “subho shokal” and so on. Moreover, Bengalis also use English in their language habit.

Bengali girls wear red-bordered white saree

Red bordered white saree is not the only category of saree Bengalis wear. Mostly in Bijoya, all girls wear the saree. But there are plenty of designs of sarees and types of wearing methods Bengalis follows. They are very delicate in the style sense. Many people resemble Bengali girls with bindi, Kajol, big eyes. But these all seem very cliche.

Bengalis only listen to Rabindra Sangeet

People from outside of Bengal think Bengalis only listen to Rabindra sangeet and immense inclined to literature. Bengalis possess a habit of the reading book like any other people from different cultures. but what they do not know or understand that not all Bengalis are bookworms and they do patronize other genres as well. India’s first rock culture was started in the ’70s with the Bengali band Moheener Ghoraguli.

All Bengalis are pro politics

Though in the independence era Bengal was the core to stimulate the freedom movement. All the Bengalis do not possess the legacy to involve themselves in active politics. Being a part of the democratic country no one claims themselves apolitical because we all the part of the building government. Many Bengalis are true quite a bit knowledgeable about politics and political history. But not all are interested in that.

There remain many misconceptions about look, culture, social, religious preferences about a community. But every culture exists with diversity and exceptions. So, generalizing the stereotypical thoughts are nothing more than a myth.

COVID 19 – THE ‘DEADLY VIRUS’

WHAT IS COVID 19?

The most deadly disease is spreading all over the world enormously known as CORONA VIRUS. The virus is called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARAS-CoV-2) and the disease it causes is called COVID 19. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Disrupting the life of several humans, disturbing the economic sector of the world as a whole, COVID19 will make the world famine one day.

STRUCTURE OF DISEASE CAUSED BY COVID-19

WHERE WAS THE FIRST CASE OF CORONAVIRUS DISEASE OBSERVED?

This deadly virus appeared for the first time in Wuhan, China in December of 2019 which is now spreading in many countries. The earliest cases had a link to a wholesale food market in Wuhan, also known as the wet market but some had no connections with the market.

According to the reports by SOUTH MORNING POST, a news update channel had reported that A 55-year-old individual from Hubei province in China may have been the first person to have contracted COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The case was reported back on 17 November 2019. Even with this Nov. 17 case identified, doctors can’t be certain the individual is “patient zero,” or the very first individual to have been infected with SARS-CoV-2. After this almost everyday new five cases were reported and cases increased day after day.

ORIGIN OF COVID-19

Doctors and Scientists are trying hard to unravel the story of the origin of coronavirus. Some scientists believe that the deadly virus emerged from bats, then probably they hopped to pangolin and transmitted to humans. The disease is now sweeping the world without any animal intermediate.

The Guardian in a report on April 28 quoted professor Stephen Turner, head of the department of microbiology at Melbourne’s Monash University, as saying what is most likely that the virus originated in bats. ‘But that is where his certainty ends,’ the reporter concluded. On the hypothesis that the virus emerged at the Wuhan live animal market from an interaction between an animal and a human, Turner says, ‘I don’t think it is conclusive by any means. Part of the problem is that the information is only as good as the surveillance,’ he said, adding that viruses of this type are circulating all the time in the animal kingdom.

Others says,‘I rather think that COVID-19 is a coronavirus which had an animal reservoir and passed into humans for reasons that are not well known yet,’ said Delfraissy, who is also president of France’s National Consultative Ethics Committee for health and life sciences. Another study claim to have ruled out pangolins as an intermediary because samples of similar viruses taken from pangolins lacked a chain of amino acids seen in the virus now found in humans.
We can conclude, the origin of SARS-CoV-2 is still a mystery and it will go longer to unravel this mystery.

BLACK LIFE MATTERS

“BLACK LIFE MATTERS” is the new trend on social media. It is an International human right movement originating in American African countries against the racism against black people. This organisation was found back in 13 July,2013 by the leaders Alisa Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi. Ms. Cullors replied: “#BlackLivesMatter”. Ms. Tometi joined in and the hashtag spread its digital wing. This is how B.L.M. started worldwide. The aim of B.L.M. is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on black communities by the state and vigilantes. After 6 years, again this is the greatest topic in every country after the injustice by a policeman with a black-man.

India’s Booming Population, Boon or Bane?

A pie chart showing major countries and their population percentage with the world

India with a population count of almost 1.35 Billion stands second in the entire planet after China. There are certain nations with similar ‘people per sq. Km’ ratios, one such example is of Japan and it has done remarkably great in terms of its wonderfully boosted economy. Can India do the same? Well, so far it has come up good with rising potential. The only question arises, could it come up to those expectations, because a lot has to done if India seeks to turn its massive population into its favour. If India looks to change its economy towards higher standards alike Japan, Indian citizens need to follow those strict discipline like the Japanese. More indigenous business setups has to be established to make India self-reliant and for this its humongous population with majority of youth (60 Cr. Plus) has to work much more seriously. A combined effort of its huge population would do wonders for India, it’s just that India needs to realise this before it’s too late to recover.

The main impact the growing population has is on the economic growth as a modest increase in national income under economic development is being eaten up by the increase in population. As a result, the per capita income of the country does not grow which in turn results in a poor standard of living. So, the overall development of the country and rise in per capita income are directly linked to population.

There is a similar scare mongering about too high a population density of Indian cities. According to them, cities are better with a lesser number of people so that they have less crowded roads, large expansive houses and lesser number of riders on commuter trains. But aren’t the advocates of sparsely populated cities arguing against their own economic well-being. Cities are vast and teeming with people not because city-dwellers like it that way but because economy and business demands it.

The rate of population growth depends on the difference between the birth rate and the death rate. Thus, the population growth experienced in India can largely be explained by variations in birth and death rates.

In 1900, India’s population count was roughly 24 Cr. In 1950-51, India’s population was 36 Cr. In 2001 it jumped to 100 Cr. This population begun soaring in the 1950s and saw the highest decadal growth of 24.8 per cent in the 1960s and 24.7 per cent in the 1970s. Since the 1980s, decadal growth has been falling and the 1990s saw a significant fall. In fact, India’s total fertility rate – a measure of the number of children born to a woman during her lifetime – was down from 5.9 in 1951 to 2.3 in 2011. The fertility rate due to the population policies and other measures has been falling but even then it is much higher compared to other countries. This means that the birth rate has been falling, but with rapid progress in medical sciences, the death rate has fallen which has ensured that the population grows.

Other reasons that have contributed to high birth rates are early marriages, lack of awareness, poverty and illiteracy, and illegal migration.

A recent report by the UN predicts that India’s population could surpass that of China by around 2024. And this is despite the fact that the country has one of the oldest family planning programmes in the world, dating back to 1951.

In the year 2017, the government of India launched Mission Parivar Vikas as a part of its national family planning initiative. It marks the first attempt at the government level to deal with family planning as a social issue rather than just a health issue, to be dealt with at a health centre. The initiative incorporates a component called ‘Saas Bahu Sammelans’ aimed at improving communication between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. It would not be right to say that the programs initiated by the government to rein in population growth have not been successful. A fertility rate of about 2.1 is a benchmark figure for ensuring a broadly stable population.

The growth should be stabilised by raising awareness among all the citizens on India, specifically in the rural regions of India because this isn’t just the government’s task from planning committee. This concerns each individual of India and to the world as well. Where we have reached so far could not be undone, this is obvious but what we could definitely do is make good use of it. Let’s engage, educate and expand the minds of Indians, specifically the Youth.

The topography of Nagasaki, which was nestled in narrow valleys between mountains, reduced the bomb’s effect, limiting the destruction to 2.6 square miles.

This was not the end of the bombs against Japan. According to sources, US was planning more bomb attacks on Japan. After the several meetings, a lot of discussions.
