Aadhar and Privacy

In the Indian Constitution, Article 21 preserves an individual’s right to privacy along with the human life’s dignity. The right to dignity is considered as a significant part of an individual’s right to life.

” In my considered opinion, right to privacy of any individual is essentially a natural right, which inheres in every human being by birth. Such right remains with the human beings till he/she breathes last. It is indeed inseparable and inalienable from human being. In other words, it is born with the human being and extinguish with the human being.”

The most common question that we hear in every day is ‘May I see your ID?’, many of our regular activities depend upon the IDs like while cash withdrawal from an ATM, joining the line of fast track at the airport, at the entry of workplace etc. If the wrong ID is shown then in many places one is denied secure access to website, attention of emergency medication and many more facilities. In Hindi, the word ‘Aadhar’ refers to ‘the foundation base’. An Aadhar is basically a random number of unique identification containing 12 digits issued in India to all its citizens irrespective of the gender and age. The agency that issues and manages the Aadhar Card is Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). In order to obtain Aadhar number, an individual who is an Indian resident requires enrollment. Primarily, Aadhar was initiated for the direct subsidies transfer into the bank account of citizens. However, the scope of Aadhar has been widened today. A case of privacy infringement was filed, the reason being that in order to acquire the Aadhar cards, the citizens were asked for their Biometrics by the Indian government. It was made compulsory for all the Indian citizens to have Aadhar card under the Aadhar scheme for the smooth functioning of the operations such as tax payment, bank accounts opening etc. A number of security benefits are provided to the weaker sections by the government, thus to avail such benefits it is necessary for all the citizens to be Aadhar card holders. However, the enrollment is not mandatory and hence it does not violate the any privacy rights as the biometrics are also provided voluntarily by the citizens. Certain sections of the society are unduly influenced secretly or directly by the government, thus the Act of Aadhar is a form of Doctrine of Colourable Legislation. In the case of Justice K.S.Puttaswamy vs. Union of India and ors 26, a petition was filed by the retired justice in which he challenged the Aadhar Scheme’s constitutional validity asserting that as the Aadhar is made compulsory, there is instance of violation of right to privacy of citizen. As an outcome, the individuals who are unwilling to register are not left with any option. Besides, in India there is lack of laws related to data protection which further increases the chances of leak of personal information of data if not handled with care. It was held that Privacy is a constitutionally protected right which not only emerges from the guarantee of life and personal liberty in Art. 21 of the Constitution, but also arises in varying contexts from the other facets of freedom and dignity recognized and guaranteed by the Fundamental Rights contained in Part III of the Indian Constitution.

Right to Privacy is a Fundamental Right. The right protects an individual’s internal sphere by the State as well as the Non- State’s interference and autonomous choices in life are allowed by the individual. The Right to Life and Personal Liberty derives the Right to Privacy. An individual can enter a citizen’s house without knocking at its door, this is easily made possible by technology. The same may be possible in case of state or non states. The privacy of the home must preserve all the essential aspects of dignity such as marriage, family, sexual orientation. The Article 21 of the Indian Constitution extends to the right to privacy and the Right to live with dignity.

The proverb ‘Health is wealth‘ means that one’s health is the greatest wealth. The definition of health is a state of a person’s physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. A healthy body resides in God. Every person must maintain good health. It makes them feel good and positive.

To maintain a healthy mind and body, one must eat clean and healthy food, balance your diet with the right promotion of essential minerals,  exercise regularly, consume lots of fruits and veggies, drink lots of water, sleep early and adequately for 8 hours. Regularly brushing your teeth twice a day and washing hands before meals will keep you healthy.

A healthy and active mind important to balance our everyday goals. It is highly relevant to balance one’s work and life at all times. In today’s world, the greed for luxury and wealth creation has caused health-related hazards.

Health is like money; we learn it’s the value when it’s lost. A Healthy person can achieve happiness and success quickly than a weak and unhealthy person. Staying fit and healthy is truly a blessing.

Kabuliwala by Rabindranath Tagore

Kabuliwala is a Bengali short story written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1892, during Tagore’s “Sadhana” period (named for one of Tagore’s magazines) from 1891 to 1895. This story is one of the best stories written by Rabindranath Tagore.

This is very emotional and sensitive story which portrayed a father’s deep love for his daughter. This story is adapted many times as a Bengali and Hindi movie in 1957 and 1961 respectively and also as a part of television series named “Stories by Rabindranath Tagore”.

SUMMARY

The story opens with the narrator describing his five-year-old daughter Mini, who learned how to talk within a year of being born and practically hadn’t stopped talking since. Her mother often tells her to be quiet, but her father prefers to let her talk, so she talks to him often.

One morning, Mini chats with her father while he’s working on an adventure novel. She looks out the window and spots a man and starts calling him “Kabuliwala, Kabuliwala!” The man she’s shouting about is an Afghan named Rahamat in baggy clothes, walking along selling grapes and nuts. However, when he comes over, Mini runs into another room, convinced that his large bags are full of children, not goods.

A few days later, our narrator finds Kabuliwala sitting next to Mini with a pile of raisins and nuts in her lap, paying close attention as she talks and talks. He has given her some grapes and pistachios, so the narrator gives the Kabuliwala half a rupee and tells him not to give her any more treats.

Later, Mini’s mother finds her with the half-rupee and asks where she got it, and is displeased to hear she took money from the man.

Mini and the Kabuliwala develop a close relationship, spending time together every day joking around and talking. The narrator enjoys talking to Kabuliwala too, asking him about his home country of Afghanistan, and all about his travels. But Mini’s mother is alarmed by her daughter’s closeness with the man, worrying that he might try to abduct Mini. The narrator does not agree that there is any danger.

Every year in the middle of the month of Magh, the Kabuliwala returns home. Before making the trip, he goes around collecting money he is owed. But this year, the Kabuliwala gets into a fight with a man who owes him money and staggers him. As a result of this, he spends the next many years in prison, during which Mini grows up and starts enjoying the company of girls her age. The narrator more or less forgets about the Kabuliwala.

A few years later, the narrator and his wife are preparing for Mini’s wedding day. But on the day of Mini’s wedding, the Kabuliwala appears at the narrator’s house. Without a bag or his long hair, he is barely recognizable to the narrator, but he eventually welcomes him in. The narrator is uneasy, thinking about how the Kabuliwala is the only would-be murderer he’s ever known, and tells the visitor to leave. He complies.

But shortly after, the Kabuliwala returns, bringing a gift of grapes and pistachios for Mini. The narrator doesn’t tell him that it’s her wedding today, but simply repeats that there’s an engagement at their house and he must go. But Kabuliwala pulls “a crumpled piece of paper” out of the breast pocket of his shirt and shows the narrator the handprint of his daughter, Parvati, that he carries with him while he travels for work. He explains that he has a daughter back home in Afghanistan, and that Mini helps him deal with the heartache of being so far from her. The narrator is touched and gets Mini.

Mini and the Kabuliwala have an awkward exchange during which the Kabuliwala suddenly realizes that his daughter, like Mini, will have grown up and be different from the little girl he once knew. As Kabuliwala thinks about Afghanistan and his daughter, the narrator pulls out some money and asks Kabuliwala to use it so that he can return home  to Afghanistan to see his daughter. He tells Kabuliwala that, “by your blessed reunion, Mini will be blessed.” Giving Kabuliwala the money means that Mini’s wedding party is not as grand as it might have been, but the narrator is happy with it, believing that “the ceremony was lit by a kinder, more gracious light.”

Analysis

There are two central themes in this story, and Tagore masterfully plays them against each other to build tension in the narrative. The first key theme is otherness, with Kabuliwala standing as a clear outsider who speaks broken Bengali and dresses in a way that situates him outside of typical Bengali society. The narrator is fascinated by him in part because of the fact that he’s seen parts of the world that are so different from Calcutta, while the narrator’s wife distrusts him precisely because he is a foreigner, and perhaps one who will kidnap her child, which she thinks Afghanis are wont to do.

The other theme is doubling, as the narrator and the Kabuliwala are construed as mirror characters of one another. They are both shown as storytellers, and each is fascinated enough by Mini to listen to her talk for hours. But most importantly, Tagore reminds us that they’re both fathers, and the narrator seeing the Kabuliwala as a man who is heartsick over a daughter that he has not seen in years helps the narrator see the man as a human being, not as some would-be murderer.

The genius of the story is the fact that the climax seems to come when Kabuliwala stabs the debtor, which would confirm the narrator’s wife’s worst fears that this outsider is dangerous. During what seems like the denouement of the story, the Kabuliwala returns and the narrator, who has clearly spent the intervening years considering the man a would-be murderer, tries to brush this outsider off.

But then the real climax comes. The Kabuliwala pulls out the piece of paper with his daughter’s handprint inscribed on it. This image draws a link between the narrator and Kabuliwala as men with daughters they love dearly. With the move to bond the narrator and the Kabuliwala, Tagore crafts a tale about finding common humanity despite all of the differences that two men may have.

It’s worth noting here that one of the things that makes Tagore such an innovator given the context he was writing in was his unconventional narrative structure. Indeed, this story doesn’t play out over some sort of conflict and resolution like a typical narrative (or the adventure stories that the narrator writes) might. Instead, Tagore develops a set of relationships and shows us how those relationships play out when tempered by the sands of time.

“DOING YOUR BEST” IS BETTER THAN “BEING THE BEST “

When you are trying to be the best you, you are typically chasing your goals and dreams in the process. As a result, you are doing what you want to do. Therefore, you will never think “what if” because you are actually in the process of being a doer.

One of the most important things in life is that you simply show up — that is half the battle. If you want to take things to the next level, then you have to try your best and learn from your experiences, whether if they lead to failure or glory.

Trying to be the best you is going to take time, hard work and commitment, but it is so worth it once you reach the end of your journey.

What is the Significance of Republic Day in India?

Since 1950, every year January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day in India. It was on this day in 1950 that the Indian Constitution came into existence. An interesting point to note here is that India got independence on August 15, 1947 from the British rule, which is celebrated as the Independence Day of India. However, it was on November 26, 1949 that Indian Constitution was first adopted. But the integration of this big nation and unifying the wide variety of cultural diversities was not done until January 26, 1950 i.e., when the Indian Constitution came into effect.

Significance of Republic Day in India

The constitution of India is a huge document which lays down procedures, powers, duties, fundamental rights and directive principles of Government of India & Indian citizens. The governing principle of the Indian Constitution is “of the people, for the people and by the people”, which signifies that the power is vested in the hands of the citizens of India. Republic Day marks the celebration of the empowerment of Indian citizens to select their own government. It is a national holiday which commemorates the process of establishment of the Indian Constitution.

 Union Minister of Education Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched 100+ comic books created by teachers and students of CBSE schools and curated by NCERT on 24th March 2021. These comics can be accessed online on DIKSHA web portal (diksha.gov.in) or via the DIKSHA app on any android Smartphone. The comics can also be accessed through a new WhatsApp powered Chatbot. The chatbot presents a unique opportunity to expand the scope of digital learning. During the occasion, Minister also launched CBSE Assessment Framework for Science, Maths and English classes as part of CBSE Competency Based Education Project.

Speaking on the occasion the Minister said that Department of School Education and Literacy, in its endeavour to provide holistic learning to students and to usher in vision envisaged in New Education Policy 2020 has launched comic books aligned to chapters of NCERT textbooks across grades 3-12. He further said that this innovative initiative will help in increasing the cultural and social sensitivity in our children while imparting knowledge. The Minister congratulated the creative and innovative teachers from various school and for this creative piece of work.

The National Education Policy 2020 envisions a shift from textbook learning to understanding concepts and making connections with real world/day-to-day activities. It also gives further impetus to all creative and out of the box thinking than rote learning. Hence, in this context, comic books aligned to chapters of NCERT textbooks across grades 3-12 have been developed as innovative pedagogical resources. The comic books have been developed by the faculties of Scholastic (language), Fine Art, Performing Arts and Information Technology across 12 States/UTs – Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Jammu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Uttarakhand.

The comics are aligned with topics of NCERT textbooks and have specific story line and characters which students and teachers can relate to. Some of the key features of these comics are: 

  • Each comic has been divided into smaller topics supported by worksheets and it dovetails with the learning objectives and outcomes.
  • It has been created in a linear progression which will help to understand basic concepts and decrease the learning gaps.
  • While deconstructing the academic content; care has been taken to address issues of gender sensitivity, women empowerment, value education among other life skills.

The reason the characters in comic books are mostly children, animals is because children tend to relate to people of their age and this helps children connect to comic books more often.

Another reason comic books have a good hold on children is that they show characters who have superpowers sometimes which brings about a belief in children that they are not alone and everybody is special in their way. If children feel alone, friendless, shy, etc comic books often play an important role in making them feel love, care, value, and importance of their existence with just the characters. Comic books help children to have confidence, trust, and a belief that they too will do well in life and bring about some change in the world and the community that they live in. Comic books are not just for fun and fantasy reading it brings about reading habit in children, improve their understanding skills, gain knowledge, and plays a very important role in bringing about improvement in their language skills and verbal skills as well.

An important thing that we often forget about comic books is that comic books medium is not just limited to children but also adolescents and preteens as well. We all are well aware about Archie right? Well, Archie is a comic books character. The journey of Archie’s is from comic books itself. Today comic books are massively into life through movies and series. The great iron man that everyone loves is from the Marvel comic book series. Every superhero character came into existence through comic books. This shows the impact comic book plays in every individual’s life no matter what.
