“Why do we need our men to praise and validate us in order for us to feel accomplished?”

“You know what women really want? We don’t want to choose. We want to fly and we also want a beautiful nest. We want both. Do male birds tell female birds to choose? “Hey honey, choose. Either fly or sit in the nest.”

Planetoids : Asteroids

An asteroid is a minor planet of the inner Solar System. Historically, these terms have been applied to any astronomical object orbiting the Sun that did not resolve into a disc in a telescope and was not observed to have characteristics of an active comet such as a tail.

As minor planets in the outer Solar System were discovered that were found to have volatile- rich surfaces similar to comets, these came to be distinguished from the objects found in the main asteroid belt.

The term “asteroid” refers to the minor planets of the inner Solar System, including those co- orbital with Jupiter. Larger asteroids are often called “Planetoids”.

Asteroids vary greatly in size from almost 1000km for the largest down to rocks just 1 meter across. The three largest are very much like miniature planets : they are roughly spherical, have at least partly differentiated interiors, and are thought to be surviving protoplanets.

“This planet is 15 million years overdue for an asteroid strike like the one that killed the dinosaurs.” – L Niel Smith

“If the Earth gets hit by an asteroid, it’s game over. It’s control-alt-delete for civilization.” – Bill Nye

The vast majority, however, are much smaller and irregularly shaped; they are thought to be either planetesimals or fragments of larger bodies.

The four largest asteroid-

  • Ceres – 939km
  • Vesta – 525km
  • Pallas – 512km
  • Hygiea – 434km

International Asteroid Day

Asteroid Day is an annual global event which is held on the anniversary of the Siberian Tunguska event that took place on June 30, 1908, the most harmful known asteroid- related event on Earth in recent history.

Asteroid Day aims to raise awareness about asteroids and what can be done to protect the Earth, it’s families, communities and future generations.

“The idea is to raise awareness of, not only the dangers of asteroids but also the fact that we have solutions in hand to find dangerous asteroids and do something about it.” – Tom Jones

“Sooner or later disasters such as an asteroid collision or a nuclear war could wipe us all out, but once we spread out into space and establish independent colonies, our future should be safe”. – Stephen Hawking

The Metamorphosis : Book Review

About the book

  • Title : Metamorphosis
  • Original Title : Die Verwandlung
  • Author : Franz Kafka
  • Year of publishing : 1915
  • Genres : Novella, psychological fiction, short story, fantasy fiction
  • Number of pages : 100

About the author

Kafka’s biography read almost like a critical analysis of his work, for so much of the neurotic tension of his writing finds its clear origin in the events of his life. Kafka was an outsider from the start.

Kafka’s ambivalent take on authority- his ability to respect it , rebel against it, and blame himself for everything- seems to come mainly from his relationship with his father. He continued writing in the evenings while living with his parents and three sisters, learning to place himself in a writing trance to block out the noise.

Much of Kafka’s early writing is lost, bht 1912 proved to be a breakthrough gear for him as he wrote some of his most important stories, including The Judgement, The Metamorphosis etc. Kafka moved through several apartments in the next few years to get away from the noise if his parent’s home to escape his father’s influence.

Never famous in his own lifetime, Kafka did have an audience of admirers within a small circle of German- reading intellectuals. Today, people use the word Kafkaesque to signify senseless and sinister complexity.

Analysis of the book

The Metamorphosis is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. It has been cited as one of the seminal works of fiction of the 20th century and is studied in colleges and universities across the world.

Kafka wrote The Metamorphosis in 1912, the year he felt his creativity finally taking a definite form. The writing process on this novel was laborious, taking three weeks in November and December, and the final product turned out to be the longest work Kafka ever completed in his life.

The style of the book epitomises Kafka’s writing. The style send to ground the story in reality, cutting off any possibility of its having been a dream, and get the story itself is of an impossible occurrence.

The Metamorphosis as professed earlier, is an autobiographical piece of writing, and we find that parts of the story reflect Kafka’s own life. It is well known that Kafka felt like an insect in his father’s authoritative presence and even developed a stammer whole speaking to him

” One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century” – Guardian

” What Dante and Shakespeare were for their ages, Kafka is for ours” – George Steiner

His manager when came to his door and started threating him he anyhow open the door and the manager was shocked on seeing him like that.

Gregor started living by accepting the way he was now but he also felt very bad for his family because it was he because of whom his family became very poor all over again. When he saw that he was not giving any benefit to the family, instead becoming a trouble for them he decides to kill himself. This book allows us to learn about the absurdity of existence, alienating experience of modern life, and the cruelty and incomprehensibility of authoritarian power.

” As Samsa struggles to reconcile his humanity with his transformation, Kafka, very deftly, weaves his readers into a web that deals with the absurdity of existence, the alienating experience of modern life, and the cruelty and incomprehensibility of authoritarian power, leaving them at once stunned and impressed.”

” The Metamorphosis is a book that concerns itself with the themes of alienating, disillusionment and existentialism.”

Realism in Pather Pachali

The Bengali feature film, “Pather Pachali” was directed by Satyajit Ray and was released in 1955. It was considered a landmark in the field of Indian as well as world cinema. Although it was director Ray’s debut effort, it went on to win critical and popular acclaim from all around the world. The path breaking movie was also instrumental in winning the ” Best Human Document ” award at the Cannes Film Festival of 1956.

Pather Pachali us considered to be neo- realist in its implications. The main reason for describing the movie as non-realist was the fact that it was filmed not long after the second world war when neo- realism held sway in most of Europe.

“Pather Panchali will leave many images in the mind’s ye and many impressions of another way of life.” – Helen Bower

“A moment where Apu and Durga walk through long grass and the boy catches his first glimpse of a train crossing the landscape defines Ray’s genius for composition and his gift for metaphor.” – Desmond Ryan

Ray chose mostly natural locations while shooting Pather Pachali. He wanted the backdrop of each shot to speak for itself. Also, he totally refrained from the artificially exaggerated practices and gestures of the popular cinema prevailing in India.

The movie is said to have amply demonstrated some affiliations with the traditions narration, representation as well as musical address prevailing in earlier times in an effort to articulate in an Indian identity of the day following independence.

Pather Pachali possessed all the essential characteristics of neo- realism. In fact, Ray was virtually unable to keep the subjective element out of his movie. But he never made comments on his actions, characters or situations. He never pitches hints at his audience and never tells them just what to think and feel.

At the same time he was not at all apprehensive about taking the appropriates not to his characters but to the drama of life itself. This is because he was predisposed not to his characters but to the drama or life itself. He had his own ways to suffuse life on to the screen in order to impart a shimmer of to all his characters.

Satyajit Ray showed the basic essentials or the happiness of the rural lives as compared to the urban lives. In urban lives we are happy with our level of happiness but in the film it is shown that the rural people were happy from little things. Their level of happiness was lower from that of the urban life but still they were happy with that.

Apu and Durga’s father was a priest so for them it was a respectful and a standard job. The main significance of the train is a very important thing throughout the movie. For the urban people train was just a common thing but for the rural people it was like a special thing. The shot of the train scene was only of 25 seconds but there were no dialogues in that scene. Here, Apu and Durga’s expressions showed the happiness on seeing the train for the first time.

The concept of train was totally unknown to them. So, when they saw the train for the first time they were surprised. Also, Apu and Durga’s mother, Sarbojoya, her human side is shown in the film. Sarbojoya’s sister-in-law used to misbehave with her due to poverty which showed the actual human aspect.

When Apu and Durga’s father returns from the city to village, the death of Durga is shown in a realistic way. There was no background music in the scene, there was no sadistic thing. The death showed the numbness which actually happens in reality where people become numb she their loved ones die.

Also, it was shown that Durga loved her aunt and so she used to steal fruits for her aunty . So this showed the bond or relationship between an old member with the younger members of the family. In real life, where we have the relationship between us and our grandparents, in the film the same things is shown through Durga and his aunt.

Pets: A Blessing

Pets can be someone’s best friend. A pet makes a home more cheerful. Just like the way a baby brings happiness, in the same way a pet can also bring joyfulness to the owner’s life.

A pet can be a good partner for someone living alone in their houses or apartments. Nowadays many people keep a pet so that they do not feel lonely. A pet can cut off the loneliness in a people’s life. Also, we can see that today most of the families are nuclear, so a pet in a nuclear family is a much needed member. The kids sometimes feel alone as their parents due to their works cannot give much time to their children so in that case a pet can be a partner for the kid with whom the child can spend time and not feel lonely.

Dogs are so sensible and intelligent that if they see that their owner is upset or had a bad day, they caresses their owners just to make them happy. A pet plays with their owners and this makes both the pet and the owner physically fit.

Playing with the pets and spending time with them are a great way of staying happy. A pet removes all the stresses and sadness of the family members. The pets also become a member of the family. They are taken care of in the same way like a baby would have been taken care of. Kids and pets are a great pair. They enjoy each other’s company.

Keeping a pet is very good as it gives both physical and emotional benefits. Going on a walk with a dog is both beneficial for the owner as well as the dog because it provides social interaction and freshenes and a little bit of exercise to both of them. A pet’s company can provide the level of happiness despite the presence of depression or anxiety.

Having a pet may also help people gain health goals, such as lowered blood pressure, and mental health also increases. They do not make us feel that we are lonely. There can be different types of pets like dogs, cats, cows, horses etc. Sometimes these pets can bring money to their owners. The milk from the cows become a source of income for their owners. The horses can be given for races which becomes a way of income for their keepers.

Thus having a pet is a blessing. They give happiness to us more than anyone else can give. They are the best companion for anyone. Spending time with them are a great way of living life happily.

Body Shaming

Body shaming is the act of mocking someone’s physical appearance. This includes fat- shaming, height- shaming, shaming for thinness; also sometimes people are body-shamed for having less hair or hair colour , lack of masculinity ( in males) and lack of femininity ( in females).

If a person whether a male or a female is overweight or obese then they are body-shamed for their fats present in the body. Sometimes this segment becomes a little controversial that if the person is suffering from obesity then why don’t they do regular exercise and follow regular diet; which is quite right to say. But there are also some people who have some kind of problem because of which no matter what the do or follow strict diet a little bit of eating can also make them fat. It is seen that sometimes the overweight people eat less than the normal people and till now nothing such conclusion has been made to this situation.

Suppose if a fat girl wears a tight fitting dress which projects her belly fat as if coming out of the body, people stars mocking her and saying abusive things for that. They starts telling her ugly and all these things makes her insecure about her physical appearance and sometimes this may lead to a serious condition of depression. The people who laughed at her said abusive words to her , could have gently told her not to wear such tight fitting clothes instead wear some losses beautiful clothes so that she can look more pretty.

Not only the obese people, the thin people are also body- shamed. They are said that “you are so thin that you will get carried away with the air”. People tell them that they don’t have any stamina or strength because they are so thin and don’t have much muscles. Instead of saying things like them they could have said that eat some protein rich foods and do some exercises for building up muscles.

If a boy is a little short then he is treated very ill in the society. Our society has the notion that boys should be tall enough to fit in the category of so called “perfect”. No matter what is their age people always calls them as “little”, “dwarf”. This effects a lot to the mental state of the boy and his self- esteem is totally destroyed. Sometimes if a boy is too tall then also people mocks him by making him as “pillar”. Instead of saying these kind of things people should encourage them as the way they are.

If a girl has some masculine features in her body let’s say for example, has some thin facial hairs or hairs around the upper lip then they are mocked by their friends as a boy. On the other hand if a boy don’t have much facial hair then they are laughed at and regarded as a girl.

Our society has a pre occupied notion that a perfect body for a girl is that the girl has to be slim, she should not have any masculine features and she should not be much tall. While for the boys, they should be tall and should have much facial and hair growth in their body.

This lowers the self esteem of such people who are the victims of body shaming. Instead of shaming them for their physical appearances we should stand with them and encourage them to be with themselves in the way they are!

Seclusion…

Sometimes what we need to get peace from everything else is the seclusion. Seclusion is a state of being alone and away from people or to be more precise, becoming more private with life.

People nowadays finds it difficult to find peace in anything. This world of politics, wars, betrayals, failures, demises makes a person lose faith in good vibes and they even lose confidence in themselves. Today, people goes through heartbreaks whether it is in friendship or relationship. Sometimes the heartbreaks comes from their families , their careers or their dreams. All these negativity makes a person feel completely exhausted and depressed.

This is the time when a person needs to live in solitude and seclusion. Sometimes, when the times are hard it is better to spend a few time with your own self for getting the peace. Seclusion gives the freedom to live in the way what a person would desire. Tearing apart all the boundaries and shackles of the responsibilities, seclusion gives the person to enjoy the life in their own way.

When a person resides in solitude or seclusion, they can make themselves happy by doing the things that they wanted to do for a long time, for example, they can go traveling or they can concentrate more on their hobbies that they were unable to do for various reasons. It is the time when a person makes time for their own selves and thus this helps them to know more about their own. They can explore their hidden talents. This is the time when a person completely understands what they truly desire .

Seclusion provides a way for having the idea and practicing self-love. We may sometimes feel that no one loves us but that’s not the right thing for a happy life. First we have to love ourselves and for that being away from people for a while makes us realise that. People should do things that make them feel happy with themselves. They should not feel bored with themselves or be dependent on anyone to become happy.

Seclusion gives us an opportunity to live the actual life rather than depending on the social media likes and comments. Nowadays people depend a lot on these social medias. The series of likes and comments puts a very bad impact on a person that if anytime they get less likes or comments they feel heartbroken and their self-confidence decreases. But if someone become isolated from this world of social media they can find that they are good enough the way they are.

Finding peace in own self and growing self love can only be achieved when a person gives time to themselves. It is a very important step which should be taken by everyone so that for a while they can detach themselves from this world and find peace in themselves. Seclusion is enjoyable if you start doing self-love and enjoying your own company and not depending on anyone for your happiness. Because at the end of the day it is you who is there for own self.

The need of “cool” parents

A parenting is considered to be good when the children feel free to share anything with their parents. In the teenage, what a child want is his or her parent’s support and guidance. They want their parents to think like them, to talk like them, they want their parents to understand their view of the world.

Today most of the parents try to be friendly with their children from the very first day . They share everything with their children so that the children never feel afraid to share anything with them. This makes the child understand that no matter what happens his or her parent is always there as the support system.

But still, there are many adolescents who are afraid to share anything with their parents. It is not that they don’t want to it is because they don’t have the courage to do that. They fear that may be their parents would shout at them and not understand their situation. This causes a very serious mental health condition.

Parents need to change themselves as per their children’s world . They should have to be frank with them as well as strict too. Extra strictness destroys the parent – children relationship. It is seen that a teenage girl or a boy even finds it difficult to discuss the pubertal changes with their parents. A good guidance can only come from a parent but if they do not make their children comfortable with them so how can a child share or discuss anything with their parents.

Parents should understand that doing good at studies and coming first is not the only thing to do in a child’s life. They can be interested in many other things. It is the duty of every parent to encourage their children in whichever field they find interest in. It is seen that many students take up medical, engineering,or law just because their parents had told them. May be they had interest in other things but because of their parent’s pressure they were unable to deny it.

When a child enters his teenage both mother and father should become the friend of his or her. The girl or the boy should feel secure in the arms of their parents that they can share their problems, their studies, plans about careers and even about having a relationship. But it is seen many children suffer through this problem of not being able to discuss anything with their parents. And this day by day triggers the anger of the child and thus a distance is created between the parents and the children.

Because of these distances it is seen that a boy or a girl does something wrong and not being able to tell their parents about this commite suicide. May be they feared that their parents won’t understand them as like always and would scold them beat them and this fear made them took such serious life- threating or life-ending step.

So, it is very important for a parent to be like a friend or to be more precise, a best friend with their children from the very beginning so that if anything happens whether good or bad they will be the first to get informed; so that their child can feel free to discuss or share anything with their parents.

A good parenting is seen when a father and a mother supports the child like the same way they show strictness. A good parenting is seen when a father and a mother becomes the most trusted partner of their child unlike anyone else.

Dreams: The world of delusions

When we sleep we enter into a world unknowingly which is full of delusions, fantasies, and imaginations. The series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occur in our subconscious mind involuntarily during certain stages of sleep is known as Dream.

Dreams occur in the rapid- eye movement (R.E.M.) stage of sleep when the brain activity is high. If a person is awakened during this stage of sleep then they generally remember the dream which is seen by them during this stage. R.E.M. sleep is understood by the continuous movements of the eyes. The eye movement can be caused due to the changing of scenes in a dream. Dreams can appear in an average of three to seven times during a one night sleep. It can last for a few seconds to 20-30 minutes.

During sleep, the mind and the body relaxes from the long day activities. People experience a lot during the day and there is actually a little time to process each thing while being awake. So it is during sleep when all the things experienced during or throughout the day are processed. This shows that the mind is more active during a dream than when someone is awake.

Dreams take place in the subconscious mind. During sleep, the conscious mind sleeps but the subconscious mind never really sleeps. The subconscious mind becomes busy processing the thoughts and the concerns during sleep. This process thus generates dreams. Thus it is believed that dreams are what what we see or experience throughout the day. It is the summation of all the events and the physical and emotional exercises that we undergo during the day appears to us in the form of dreams in a more creative way .

In dreams we can see only the familiar faces. Subconscious mind cannot invent new faces as it only contains the memory that it has stored when the conscious mind was awake. It is very interesting to know that dreams do not show reading. Meaning a person can’t dream about reading a book during their sleep. It is because the dreams take place in the subconscious mind and it cannot make any words or letters as it is the job of the conscious mind.

Men and women dream differently. It is observed that the dreams of men usually contains aggression, physical activities, and also the quantity of people in a man’s dream is usually less. But a woman’s dream is totally opposite. The dream of women usually contains emotional situations and their dreams generally have more number of people unlike that of a man’s dream.

If a person is undergoing through underlying stress and anxiety then the negative dreams can appear which consists of anger, fear, insecurity, and sadness. Unpleasant dreams give a sign that the mental health of the person is disturbed and it needs to be taken care of immediately.

Sometimes the dreams give the feeling of “déjà vu”. After waking we feel that the thing that appeared in the dream is taking place in reality. The researches suggest that dreams recharge creativity. While sleep, the subconscious mind is dealing with and working out the problems and thus provides solutions by reliving the events. For example James Watson envisioned the DNA double helix.

There are different kinds of dreams:

• Daydreams: It is referred to as the dreaming while we are awake.

• Recurring dreams: These are the dreams which occurs repeatedly for more than once.

• False awakening: Sometimes while dreaming we find ourselves woken up from sleep but later it is understood that we are not actually awake it was just a part of the dream.

• Healing dreams: These dreams are generally the comfort giving and good vibes giving dreams.

• Nightmares: These are the dreams which are full of negativity. People having nightmares see dreams having the theme of dying or any other type of violence. Also, sometimes if anyone sees a scary dream it is also referred to as a nightmare. Some nightmares can be so dangerous that people just wake up from sleep and starts to scream.

• Lucid dreams: These dreams generally take place in the R.E.M. stage of sleep. Lucid dreams are the ones when someone know that they are dreaming and thus they can control their dreams too at that stage of sleep.

People experience a lot everyday so it is very much normal to have dreams everyday as it is the processing of the memories stored in the subconscious mind. So even if people dream everyday 3-7 dreams, not all dreams can be remembered.

Menstrual Taboos

Menstruation is a very natural and important thing in a woman’s life. But in India there are a lot of taboos and myths regarding this which are still now believed by a large number of the female population.

Menstruation(also known as periods) is the flowing of blood from the uterus through vagina which occurs when the eggs in the ovary of a female are not fertilised. This happens every month generally for 4-6 days. This is a biological process without which a female can never be able to have the beautiful feeling of becoming a mother.

But people in India, mostly the females still now follow a large number of menstrual taboos that are imposed upon them by their mothers or grandmothers. This creates a great impact on the mental health of many women during their periods. These taboos are followed without any scientific reasons and proofs.

During those days the girls are not allowed to enter the temples or any holy places and are not even allowed to touch anything holy not even the flowers or utensils used for the prayer of gods in their houses. It is because they are said that when a girl is going through her periods she is considered as an “impure”; because they are having a blood flow from their vaginal area. This creates a great impact on the mental health of a girl because she looses her self confidence and feels being an impure. The possible scientific reason for this kind of taboo can be that during this time a female undergoes tremendous stomach pain and so they may be unable to complete their prayers by following all rituals. But this reason is not thought by anyone rather they prefer continuing the taboo without finding the scientific reasons behind it.

It is seen that in some parts of the country women are not allowed to enter the kitchen and cook goods during these days. People believe that during this time the girls can be unhygienic and unclean and so if they cook food then the food would get contaminated. But there could also be another scientific reason behind this which could be that during this time a woman needs some rest because because of the hormonal changes they feel really tired so during this time it becomes difficult for them to cook food for the all day long. But here also people instead of giving her rest, believes in this kind of taboo which affects the mental health of the woman who is menstruating.

Also there are some girls who believe eating sour foods like tamarind, curd etc would make their blood flow worse or stop. But no such scientific reasons has been found to the impact of sour foods during periods. Girls can eat sour foods during their periods and no such changes in the blood flow occurs.

And which shocks the most is that a large number of girls from today’s generation still believe in this kind of taboos. Today everyone is well known by the fact of menstruation whether it’s a male or a female but there are still some girls who goes on believing on this taboos. Being an individual in this world of technology and science growing world it is very shocking to see that kind of girls who instead of fighting against this , believes in this taboos.

Also it is the responsibility of every men towards the female individuals of their lives , to provide them comfort and support during these days.

Periods is not an unholy thing. A girl does not become impure if she is having her periods. What is impure is the superstitious believes of the people who believes in this kind of taboos. During this time try to be supportive and stand beside the girl rather than destroying her mental health. Also every girl should raise a voice against this kind of taboos rather than believing in it.

Nothing changes if you are on your periods. You are as pure as you were in your other days of the month.
