National Sports Day is a public holiday celebrated in various countries to honour the national sports teams and sports traditions of those countries. On this The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29 August, on the birth anniversary of hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. This day marks the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand Singh, the hockey player who won gold medals in Olympics in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He score 570 goals in his career, from 1926 to 1949.

On the day, states like Haryana, Punjab, and Karnataka among others organise events to promote a sporting culture among the youth of the country. Post-2012, the government has used this day to launch various sports schemes, including the Khelo India movement, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.

National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning is a joint initiative from IITs and IISc to offer online courses and certification in various topics. CHILDREN’S DAY

The children’s day in India is celebrated on November 14 since the year 1964. Before 1964, India celebrated children’s day along with the world on November 20 – the Universal Children’s Day. In1964, after Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru’s death, it was decided unanimously to commemorate his birth anniversary as Children’s Day in the country.

It is celebrated to increase awareness of the rightsof childre.Nehru considered children as real strength of a nation and foundation of society.On this day, many educational and motivational programs are held across India for children.It is mainly celebrated in schools with a face of Joy by children.

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU

Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14th November,1889.He was born in Allahabad in British India.He was first prime minister of independent India , who established parliamentary government and became noted for his neutralist (nonaligned) policies in foreign affairs. He was also one of the principal leaders of India’s independence movement in the 1930s.

Nehru was born to a family of Kashmiri Brahmins, noted for their administrative aptitude and scholarship, who had migrated to Delhi early in the 18th century. He was a son of Motilal Nehru, a renowned lawyer and leader of the Indian independence movement, who became one of Gandhi’s prominent associates. Jawaharlal was the eldest of four children, two of whom were girls.  Vijaya Lakshmi 1pandit,sister of Jawaharlal Nehru later became the first woman president of the UN general Assembly.

SUBASH CHANDRABOSE

Subash Chandra Bose, affectionately called as Netaji, was one of the most prominent leaders of Indian freedom struggle. Though Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru have garnered much of the credit for successful culmination of Indian freedom struggle, the contribution of Subash Chandra Bose is no less. He has been denied his rightful place in the annals of Indian history.

He founded Indian National Army to overthrow British Empire from India and came to acquire legendary status among Indian masses.  Bose was an Indian nationalist, and a prominent figure of the Indian independence movement. The leader spearheaded the revolutionary Indian National Army during World War II. He always pitched for complete and unconditional independence of India from the British Rule.

Subhash Chandra Bose went to Japan in 1943. This was because the Japanese gave their agreement to his appeal for help. In Japan Subhash Chandra Bose began the formation of the Indian National Army.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

Independence Day is celebrated annually on 15 August as a national holiday.It is celebrated to commemorate India’s freedom from the British rule in 1947. After independence, India became the world’s largest democracy after the UK Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act, 1947, transferring legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly. The Independence Day also marks the anniversary of undivided India’s partition into India and Pakistan. This day is observed as a national holiday across India, with offices, banks and post offices remaining closed. Independence Day is observed with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events in all Indian states and Union Territories. Independence Day preparation’s start a month in advance. Schools and colleges conduct cultural events, competitions, debates, speeches, and quiz competitions.

Gandhi jayanti

Gandhi  Jayanti is celebrated yearly on 2 October. It is one of the official declared national holidays of India, observed in all of its states and territories. Gandhi, father of the Nation, as he was called, led India’s freedom movement along with many other national leaders against the British rule in India. His method of non-violence inspired many civil rights movements across the world.  To celebrate his contribution to the nation, 2nd October is celebrated every year as a national holiday.

The day is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence by the United Nations. Gandhi not only contributed to Indian freedom struggle but he also fought to bring changes into the society. He fought against the pre-existing Indian caste system and worked towards the abolition of the inhumane treatment of untouchables. He also fought to establish equality and brotherhood in the society. His beliefs and principles have motivated the masses to bring down the mighty colonial empire to its knees. His quotes inspire youth even today. His idea of non-violence has taught everyone that even in a gentle way, one can shake the world. Thus 2nd day of October is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti throughout the nation

Teachers day

In India, 5th September is celebrated as Teachers’ Day as a mark of tribute to the contribution made by teachers to the society. The significance of this day is ever-evolving, including taking lessons from life and making your experiences the teachers you needed to shape you into who you become. For school students, the day also means getting roses, chocolates, gifts including handmade cards to profess their affection for their favourite teachers. For senior students, Teacher’s day is one of role reversal and celebration

When some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, he said, “instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege, if 5th September is observed as Teachers’ day”. From then onwards, the 5th of September has been observed as Teachers Day, in India.
