Finding the motivation to work harder.

Our society often requires us to work harder. Anything that we want to achieve needs our dedication towards it and hardwork. But we don’t often burn the midnight oil for the test that’s soon to be taken. Or we don’t give our best in the jobs we have. Leaving us dissatisfied and troubled for a while. We have all been there. Maybe now is the time to motivate yourself to work harder, and reap the fruits that you deserve.

Motivating yourself to work harder shouldn’t be a short term boost that you experience after listening to some motivational speaker. It should be your lifestyle.

Here are some of the ways you can motivate yourself to work harder.

The task could be easier than you think.

An effective way of convincing yourself to work harder is to change your perception about the task. Maybe it is not that hard, after all. Shift your focus from the level of difficulty to the feeling of accomplishment you might feel upon finishing the task in hand. It isn’t really fun to have it easy in life. Facing challenges makes you feel better and feel more capable.

You are way more in control than you think.

Although you cannot control the circumstances. You can control what you choose to do with your time. With proper planning and adequate help from people, you can finish your tasks one by one. Leaving you with less guilt and stress by the end of the day and a sense of accomplishment

As they work harder, so do you.

When you surround yourself with people who work hard, you will also be motivated to work hard. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if peer pressure influenced you to work hard on the important things in life? Join forces with people who influence you to work hard and help you during the process.

No human is an island! We all need to be motivated and helped by people around us to work harder.

Break your assignments into smaller fragments!

Writing an assignment with a word limit of 3,000 words does seem like a daunting task! But writing a few words everyday, way before the due date can ensure that you do a small portion of the task each day and still finish the assignment of 3,000 words on time.

Never fail to celebrate your small victories while you prepare for the bigger success. Although the win may seem small, their accumulation results in bigger accomplishments. Bearing this in mind motivates you to work harder.

Train to focus.

Focusing on a task, helps you to finish it more efficiently and faster. Thus, motivating you to work harder on the important things in life. Distractions can cause delay and lack of efficiency, which leads to lack of motivation and interest in completing your tasks.

It is advisable to set a time period and distance yourself from everything else apart from the resources required to accomplish a task. Perhaps, you can set a time limit for the distracting elements or use it as a reward for your small wins!

Why are you doing what you are doing?

Since you are already doing what you are doing and you need the motivation to work harder on it. It is essential to remind yourself of why you are doing what you are doing. It could be because you are passionate about it, or you want to make a better future for yourself, or maybe even because you are bored and have nothing else to do.

The ‘why’ behind the task you are doing, often acts as a driving force that motivates you to work harder on the same.

Finally, bring in some positivity!

Although, positivity is a term that is already being used a tedious number of times. It must be reiterated once again because of its significance. One cannot carry on with a task in hand while having a negative attitude. We are faced with unfortunate circumstances sometimes or we become weary due to our responsibilities. It’s wiser to take a day or two off from your assignments and challenges during such occasions and do things that comfort you.

Start again with a positive outlook over your life. You will indeed feel motivated to work harder.

So there you go! These are some points covered that can motivate you to work harder. Do mention in the comment box if any technique inspired you or motivated you to work harder.

Things to do at least once in your life.

This is an image about life.

Living every day, doing our daily chores, when we pause and think. We are often surprised at how fast time passes by as we might have already lived through 20, 30, or 40 years of our lifetime. Although a considerable amount of our lives have passed, when we look back, there are several things that are left unsaid. Several things that are left undone. So many dreams that are left unscathed.

Maybe now is the time to do some of those things, to add more meaning and experiences to our lives.

Here are some of the things that you should do at least once in your life.

1.Own a pet:

This an image of Own a pet.

There is nothing like being smothered by the unconditional love of an animal. Owning a pet can especially help improve your mood while having a particularly bad day. You can also practice being caring and compassionate as owning pets will require you to do so very often. What you can have as a pet is up to you. A transformation witnessed in you, in terms of loving and caring is guaranteed!

2. Live alone:

This is an image of Live alone.

To some it may sound daunting, to some it may sound exciting. Nevertheless it’s an experience one should have in their lives. Sometimes it also becomes the need of the hour to spend time alone at your place. Living alone brings in with it the sense of responsibility, adulthood and freedom unlike anything else. You can choose whatever you want to do without seeking permission from anyone. Unless you have a landlord.

3. Buy something expensive:

This is an image for Buy something expensive.

How long would you keep criticising every newly launched I-Phone while intrinsically desiring to buy the same? Or anything expensive for that matter. Just go ahead and make that expensive purchase at least once in your life. Here’s a follow-up story that can encourage you to pursue the finer things in life.

Ratan Tata, an Indian industrialist and the former chairman of Tata and sons, spoke about a friend who had the misfortune of losing his pens very often. He ended up buying and using cheap pens as a result of his worrying habit. Ratan Tata gave him the suggestion of buying the most expensive pen that he could afford and see what happens.

His friend went on to buy a 22 carat gold cross pen. 6 months later when Ratan Tata met his friend again, he asked him about his habit of losing pens. His friend replied saying he is very cautious about his expensive pen and has managed to keep it with him till now.

It was the value of the pen that made the difference and there was nothing wrong intrinsically with his friend. If this story doesn’t convince you to buy something expensive, nothing else can.

4. Fall in love:

This is an image of fall in love.

It might not be possible to plan and pursue such feelings in life. But when you do fall in love with someone you have met, embrace this beautiful feeling. What to do after you fall in love is something beyond my league. But the cliched feeling of butterflies in the stomach while you are near them, or imagining spending a lifetime with them when you are away from them. Is a moment worth living and experiencing.

5. Help a stranger:

This is an image of Help a stranger

There are a lot of people around us who are yearning for our help with something. Donate when an opportunity presents itselves. Reach out to the lone person in the group. Avoid bargaining over petty expenses with the vegetable or fruit vendors. Lend your seat on public transport to someone who has been standing for a while. Buy food for someone. There are plenty of ways we can help as every individual has so much to offer to society.

Although the list ends here, let your spirit keep looking for more things to do at least once in your life.

There’s a curiosity in all of us that acts as a driving force for learning new things. There are a variety of fields of specializations in the 21st century that kindle the curious cat inside us. Our desire can influence us to learn about almost everything that exists in this world. But the constraints of time and lengthy periods of learning a course can put the curious cat inside you to sleep.

However, the 21st century that brought along with it the various fields of specializations has also brought some simple means of learning. There are several apps and websites that enable learning from the comfort of your home. You can begin learning online and learn at your own pace. Free demo lectures are also offered by many institutions to help you understand what you are signing up for.

There’s nothing more sassy than being able to speak in a foreign language, at a foreign place. Being well-versed with a few more languages other than your mother tongue puts you at ease with different people from different places. It also gives you the privilege of visiting different places without the fear of the unknown.

There are several online applications such as Duolingo and Babbel that can aid you with your efforts.

6. Learn Typing

Nothing wastes your time like having to search for the keys you need to press while typing an important document. Learning to type familiarises you with the positioning of the keys that can help you type faster than before. I would recommend the Typing Master portal to learn typing. It comprises tutorials, tests, and games to get you better acquainted with your keyboard.

7. Learning a new sport

This is an image of learning a new sport

Unless you are looking up some tricks and moves of the game on the internet, this activity might require you to go beyond what an electronic device can offer. Learning a new sport can help build a rapport between you and your team. It improves your skill of coordination and sportsmanship. The pleasure of seeing the shuttlecock soaring in the air after swinging a badminton racket at it has always been incompatible for me.

These are some of the activities you can start learning today.

How to make friends as an adult.

Friendship is a beautiful relationship that sets sail towards wonderful experiences. Your friends are the ones who relieve you from your mundane routine and bring excitement in your lives. We bunk classes knowing that our friends have got our back. And if they are willing to be our partners in crime, then it’s an added blessing. We call them when depressed, knowing that our friends will allow us to vent out to them and will make us feel better.

As we get older, lesser friends remain in touch. We may relocate to a new place, or begin our education at a new college. It then becomes necessary to pursue new friendships to keep our company. The older we get, the more challenging it becomes to make new friends.

This is an image of How to make friends as an adult.

Why does making friends as an adult become challenging?

As an adult, it becomes difficult to deviate from the people we already know and pursue new relationships. We also find the people around us in different phases of lives from ours. Children are well connected with each other based on the some-what universal educational system and leisure outdoor or indoor games. Even though not every child’s interests and opinions match with the others, they are dynamic and willing to try different activities along with their peers.

But as we grow up, our interests and opinions become rigid. Instead of being dynamic, we hope to find company in people with similar interests. We also become conditional regarding the kind of people we want to be friends with. Hence it becomes challenging to make friends as an adult.

How to make friends as an adult?

1.Take the initiative:

This is an image for take an initiaitive

Picture this, you enter into a social setting and see people around you. This is the right moment, thrust your hand out and introduce yourself. Ask follow up questions such as what does the person do, where he or she is from, and also share some personal stuff about yourself. You have set the ball rolling on making the person your friend. Maintain consistency in talking to them thereafter and you have got yourself a friend.

2. Join organizations or associations:

Usually in colleges, associations and groups are formed to conduct fun activities and refreshments. You can join any of these groups and associations based on your interests. This allows you to associate and coordinate with people sharing your interests. It can prove to be an ice-breaker between you and the others around you and put you at ease with your newly found friends. Thus making friends as an adult is much easier than it seems!

3. Be what you seek:

This is an image for Be what you seek.

What are the qualities you seek while making friends as an adult? Possibly kind, warm, consistent, and positive. Wouldn’t the other person also look for the same qualities in a friend? Be that kind, helpful, and warm person with whom you would like to be friends with. We can work on confidence, sense of humour, and a dynamic personality later on.

4. Pursue friendships, not similarities:

The goal is to make friends. Don’t filter people out because they don’t stand in solidarity with your interests. Seek new friends and you may also seek new interests and hobbies.

5. Hear out!

This is an image for Hear out!

The best part about friendship is that we always have someone to hear us out. It could be our deepest desires, problems or even mundane everyday occurrences. Seeking friends as an adult, you also may have to lend your ears to what others have to say. It forms a great foundation for a long lasting friendship.

Making friends as an adult is no rocket science. You just need to take some time to put yourself out there to seek new friendships.

Suffering from boredom? Here are some ways you can kill it.

Although we have the entire world today at an arm’s length, our mobile phone. We can’t help feeling bored and empty after scrolling through endless feeds on Facebook and Instagram, binge watching an uncountable number of series and movies across different video streaming platforms, unlocking each and every item available in our favourite video games, and using almost every app on our phone

This is an image of Suffering from Boredom

It is time to look beyond what our phones have to offer. It’s as simple as looking for another source of happiness when something you have been doing fails to excite you. Here are some of the activities that can help you while suffering from boredom.

Sing a song

This is an image of sing a song

Sing for yourself. Not for someone else. Don’t seek approval from anyone. Play your favourite song in the background and sing along. You will eventually get better at it and also feel better. Doing things for oneself is the best gift we can give to ourselves.

Dance to your favourite song

This is an image of Dance to your favorite song

Dance in your room when no one’s looking, or dance at a party without caring if anyone’s looking. You’ve got to get your blood and adrenaline pumping. That’s how you end your suffering from boredom and kill it under your prancing feet.

Play your favourite song

This is an mage of play your favorite song

If you don’t feel like trying the activities above, play your favourite song. You will automatically find yourself singing and dancing to the tunes. Playing music on your phone is surely the easiest form of entertainment you can seek. But avoid the urge to visit social media as you play your favourite song in the background. Observe and understand the lyrics of the song, and let your imagination run wild on the foreground. You can be the hero romancing your heroine, or the other way around in your favourite song.

Write a song

This is an image of Write a song

It sounds complicated, but it’s not. Have you ever jokingly or unknowingly replaced a word or a phrase from your favourite song, and it still sounded perfect? Do it a little seriously this time at a greater length for the sake of your suffering from boredom. Try doing it over consecutive days instead of doing it at a single stretch of time.

Take pictures

This is an image of Take Pictures

Here’s another activity that involves your phone, but it’s worth your time. Take pictures of anything that appeals to your sight. From the colourful rubix cube sitting on your desk, to the sun rising from the east. There are many things worth capturing around you, which you can find as you observe your surroundings with your eyes wide open. Suffering from boredom might actually come in handy here as you try finding beauty in little things to entertain yourself.

Call a friend

This is an image of call a friend

We humans are social beings, so why not share your suffering in boredom with your friends? The conversation might probably begin with, “Dude, I am so bored”, to “so see you at 5”. You can come up with something interesting between the opening and closing lines. There, you have managed to kill it and end your suffering from boredom.

Play an instrument

This is an image for Playing an instrument

It’s time to pick up that keyboard, guitar, or drums that is catching dust in the corner and start creating music. It does sound like a daunting task, to me. But playing an instrument to your favourite song will be a more delightful experience.

Draw something

This is an image for Draw something

Be it a doodle at the last page of your notebook, or a full sized drawing on an A4 size paper. Drawing gives the satisfaction of having created something. Creation is the best medicine for someone suffering from boredom. You might have heard yourself saying many times that I am bad at drawing, but the final results of your creation on paper is often much better than you imagined. At least if you draw from reference instead of drawing from your imagination.

There are other activities you can take up such as learning a new language or taking up a specialization course in a field of your interest. But this article focuses on simple pleasures one can experience while suffering from boredom and finding ways to kill it.

You can also come with some of your own activities and mention them in the comment section to help others kill boredom. Myself included.

How to overcome your feeling of shyness.

Imagine this. It’s the beginning of a new academic year in a new school or college and you enter a classroom full of chattering students. Does that sound like a nightmare to you? Do you wish that a teacher or a professor should enter the class soon so that there will be silence and you won’t feel left out? If you do, you know that you are a shy person. Shyness is an obstruction that prevents you from presenting yourself in a social situation. One might even find ways to avoid a social situation due to his or her shyness.

Shy people often wait for the others to begin a conversation and hope to be invited into their friend circle. Once they become comfortable around a bunch of people, they seem to have overcome their shyness and become the life of the party around them.

Why could you be shy?

During such daunting social situations, you might have had this question in your mind, “Why am I so shy?” The answer could range from something serious such as being bullied, or subtle such as lack of experience with social situations. There are also biological aspects such as genetics that influence the trait of shyness within a person. Shyness is often the result of the environment and an individual’s relationship with their parents.

Having had strict or doting parents during childhood could result in the development of shyness in an individual. Shy parents could also render their children to be shy. Public humiliation or overly critical workspaces develop a sense of shyness among adults.

How to overcome your feeling of shyness

You might be racking your brain right now, trying to figure out how you can overcome the feeling of shyness like me. But let us first take a moment to figure out our strengths as a shy person. It might seem less likely but you might get pleasantly surprised!

  • Being shy puts you at an advantage in certain kinds of job profiles. In this aggressive and competitive world, being calm and considerate is valued and anticipated among therapists, counselors and other social-service oriented careers.

  • Your shyness, which results in a calm and composed stature may seem as less intimidating and approachable for many people. Newbies might feel more comfortable approaching you than the competitive and loud person nearby.

  • Being a shy person, you might rethink choices you need to make in difficult situations. It might probably slow you down but would help you arrive at the right decision.

With our strengths out of the way, let us focus on the steps you can take to overcome shyness.

Observe your friends or a family member

There are people around us like close friends and family members who relatively lean on the bolder and talkative side of the spectrum. They might be able to get things done by talking and socialising at an event might be easier for them. You can take cues from them and act accordingly when you feel shy.

Start simple

Initiating a conversation with a stranger is often intimidating as we might not always know what to say. You can start simple by introducing yourself and asking questions such as “Where are you from?”, “What kind of hobbies do you enjoy?”, or you can ask for a simple favor or information. Asking questions can help you know the person better and you may find some similar hobbies and interests that you can talk about.

Join groups with similar interests

Find groups of similar interests and hobbies, you will have a lot to talk and share about with people in such places.

Visualise being bold

One of the effective ways to overcome shyness is to imagine yourself as bold and confident. An upcoming social situation need not be feared with the imagination of embarrassment and humiliation. Instead, visualise yourself having a good time talking to people.

So there you go! These are some of the ways you can overcome shyness. Do embrace yourselves as you make progress with overcoming your shyness. There are considerate and helpful people who are willing to accept you the way you are.

Evolution of computer programming

When Charles Babbage made the computer, he had yet to
figure out about how to give the machine instructions. The first ever
programming language was written by Ada Lovelace in the year of 1883. The code
was for computing Bernoulli’s number and hence that was the first time the
computing power of the machine was seen in action.

In the 1949, Assembly language, a type of low-level
language, came into play.it only consists of symbols/instructions that only
computer can understand and interpret. It is still used till this day in the
aviation systems and medical equipment.

The first complied computer program is Autocode and
was developed by Alick Glennie in the year 1952.

In the year of 1957, FORTRAN was developed for numeric
and scientific calculations. The program developed by John Backus and IBM. This
was the first optimizing compiler. It was used for scientific purposes like for
computing numerical weather predictions, fluid dynamics, geophysics, crystallography,
computational chemistry etc. It was in the software for NASA probes voyager-1
and voyager-2. With years it came with different and better versions.

Algorithmic language, also known as ALGOL, was the
first programming language to implement nested function and had a simpler syntax
than that of the FORTRAN. It was built in the year 1958. It is family of
interactive computer programming languages. It used the code block like, ‘begin’
to start and ’end’ to end the code. It was designed to avoid some of the
problems in FORTRAN. Iwas designed by Baue, Bottenbruch, Rutishauser, Samelson,
Backus, Katz, Perlis, Wegstein,Naur, Vanquois, van Wijingarden, Wooder ,Green, McCarthy.

COBOL, also known as Common Business-Oriented
Language. As the name suggests the code was specifically useful in business. In
19777, 80% of the world’s business was handled by COBOL. It is widely used for
applications deployed on mainframe computer. It was developed by Howard
Bromberg, Norman Discount, Vernon Reeves, Jean E. Sammet, William Selden,
Gertrude Tierney along with the indirect influence from Grace Hopper.

By 1964, we had BASIC. It stands for Beginners
All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. In the year 1991, Microsoft came out
with Visual Basic, an updated version of the previous one. The first
microcomputer version was developed by Bill Gates, Paul Allen and Monte
Davidoff for their company Microsoft, right after they formed it.

And one of the most commonly used computer programming,
and the mother of almost all higher-level languages, C, came into existence in
the year of 1972. It is a procedural language. All the codes that were previously
written in assembly language was replaced by C. Those include operating systems
like Kernel and others. It can be used by implementing an operating system, embedded
system and also website using CGI- Common Gateway Interface.

National Education Day!

Education is highly sought after around the world. It often acts as the key to knowledge and wisdom in different areas of our lives. From four year old kids to adults, everyone is indulged in learning something at schools, colleges or even homes. Whether you like it or not, the sense of achievement one experiences as they clear an examination and witness their qualification add value to their name (Ashish Edwin LLB for example) is priceless.

Today is regarded as National Education day in India on account of the birth anniversary of India’s first education minister named Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad. He served as the first education minister for an independent India. The National Education day has been observed every year on November 11th since 2008.

Who was Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad?

Abdul Kalam Azad was an independence activist, writer and a senior member of the Indian national congress. After India became independent, he went on to become the first education minister of an independent India. He was fondly referred to as Maulana, a hororrary term meaning ‘Our master’. He took up Azad (free) as his pen name for his writings.

His contribution to the educational foundation of India is remembered by celebrating National Education Day on his birth anniversary across India.

A journalist

At an early age, he began his career as a journalist by contributing to Urdu newspapers and magazines. He further went on to purchase a monthly journal, until its closure due to lack of resources. He also became an editor for a newspaper from Amritsar.

A freedom fighter

Azad heavily criticised the British and Muslim politicians of his time. He opposed the British for discriminating and failing to provide for the needs of Indian civilians, and opposed the Muslim leaders as they focused on communal issues over common interests of the nation. Azad, alongside two others are accredited to the establishment of Jamia Millia Islamia Institution of higher education in Delhi. It was being run solely by Indians without any British involvement.

His post independence career

Azad initiated the construction of schools and colleges, and encouraged children and adults for enrollment to popularise formal education. Being India’s first minister of education, he encouraged educational privileges to be extended to the rural population and girls. He also laid emphasis on free and compulsory education for children till the age of 14. Azad addressed the All India Education conference on 16th January 1948 stating that,

We must not for a moment forget, it is a birthright of every individual to receive at least the basic education without which he cannot fully discharge his duties as a citizen.” By Abdul Kalam Azad.

The first Indian Institute of Education (IIT) was established by the ministry of education in 1951 under his leadership. He also encouraged the development of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, alongside the faculty of technology in Delhi university.

How is the National Education Day celebrated?

Educational institutions across India celebrate this day by conducting seminars and workshops, holding essay writing and elocution competitions, and initiating rallies with banners and slogans that emphasises the importance of education, in remembrance of the honorable Abdul Kalam Azad’s emphasis on importance of education during his tenure as the education minister of India.

  ENCAPSULATION IN JAVA WITH EXAMPLES

BY- RAJESHWARI KUWAR

The process of binding data and corresponding methods (behavior) together into a single unit is called encapsulation in Java.

In other words, encapsulation is a programming technique that binds the class members (variables and methods) together and prevents them from being accessed by other classes.

Thereby, we can keep variables and methods safes from outside interference and misuse.

Every Java class is an example of encapsulation because we write everything within the class only that binds variables and methods together and hides their complexity from other classes.

Another example of encapsulation is a capsule. Basically, the capsule encapsulates several combinations of medicine.

If combinations of medicine are variables and methods then the capsule will act as a class and the whole process is called Encapsulation as shown in the below figure.

In the encapsulation technique, we declare fields as private in the class to prevent other classes from accessing them directly. The required encapsulated data can be accessed by using the public Java getter and setter method.

If the field is declared private in the class, then it cannot be accessed by anyone from outside the class and hides the field within the class. Therefore, it is also called data hiding.

Let’s understand Encapsulation in java better by taking real-time examples.

Realtime Example of Encapsulation in Java

Example 1:

Schoolbag is one of the most real examples of Encapsulation. Schoolbags can keep our books, pens, etc.

Example 2:

When you log into your email accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or Rediff mail, there is a lot of internal processes taking place in the backend and you have no control over it.

When you enter the password for logging, they are retrieved in an encrypted form and verified, and then you are given access to your account.

You do not have control over it that how the password has been verified. Thus, it keeps our account safe from being misused.

Example 3:

Suppose you have an account in the bank. If your balance variable is declared as a public variable in the bank software, your account balance will be known as public, in this case, anyone can know your account balance. So, would you like it? Obviously, No.

So, they declare the balance variable as private for making your account safe, so that anyone cannot see your account balance.

The person who has to see his account balance, will have to access only private members through methods defined inside that class and this method will ask your account holder name or user Id, and password for authentication.

Thus, we can achieve security by utilizing the concept of data hiding. This is called Encapsulation in Java.

How to achieve or implement Encapsulation in Java

There are two important points whereby we can achieve or implement encapsulation in the Java program.

1. Declaring the instance variable of the class as private. so that it cannot be accessed directly by anyone from outside the class.

2. Provide the public setter and getter methods in the class to set/modify the values of the variable/fields.

Advantages

There are the following advantages of encapsulation in Java. They are as follows:

1. The encapsulated code is more flexible and easier to change with new requirements.

2. It prevents the other classes to access the private fields.

3. Encapsulation allows modifying implemented code without breaking other code that has implemented the code.

4. It keeps the data and codes safe from external inheritance. Thus, Encapsulation helps to achieve security.

5. It improves the maintainability of the application.

6. If you don’t define the setter method in the class then the fields can be made read-only.

7. If you don’t define the getter method in the class then the fields can be made write-only.

A disadvantage of Encapsulation in Java

The main disadvantage of encapsulation in Java is it increases the length of the code and slows shutdown execution.

ACCIDENTAL INVENTIONS

The history is full of stories about the great
inventions of man-kind. These are the inventions that now make our life easier as
well as convenient. But some of these came into existence accidentally. Despite
that they made a huge change in fields of science and also our life-style. Below
is six- great inventions that were accidentally invented.

Saccharin-Artificial sweetener

 Constantin Fahlberg,
a Russian chemist, was working in his lab right after which he went to have sandwiches
without washing his hands. He realized that the usual sandwich is sweeter. Upon
realizing that he discovered that his hand was covered with the compound,
benzoic sulfinide, formed after reaction of o-sulfobenzoic acid with phosphorus
chloride and ammonia is the one he tasted. Under different circumstances this
could have been a health hazard, but luckily he invented something edible.

Pace maker

Wilson Greatbatch, a professor of engineering at the
University of Buffalo, in the year of 1956 accidentally invented the pacemaker.
He was working on building a device that would record the heart beats and ended
up finding the device is giving off electric pulses, similar to that of a heartbeat.
Later Greatbatch then introduced his invention to a surgeon, William Chardack, with
whom he was to successfully abled control a dog’s heartbeat. And after few
years, in 1960, it was able to work on humans too.

Penicillin

One of the man-kinds best invention, Penicillin was invented
on accident. In the year of 1928, DR. Alexander Fleming left out his culture
Staphylococcus aureus in his lab two week. He was about to throw it away before
finding that its growth had being prevented by the mold called Penicillium
notatum. From there he isolated the mold and ran tests to determine that penicillin
has antibacterial effect on staphylococci and other gram-positive pathogens.

Champagne

The monks of the champagne, having the best access to
grapes, decided to make white wine. Since it was cold it hindered the fermentation
process and when the spring came, wine containers were filled with carbon
dioxide. The excess of carbon dioxide caused carbonation in the drink. To fix
this, French monk named Dom Pierre Perigon came over to champagne handle it. But
later people decide that the carbonation made the drink fizzy and hence tastier.

Popsicles

When Frank Epperson was 11-years old, he mixed some
soda power with water and left it in the freezer overnight completely by
accident. The next day he decided to lick the frozen soda solution and was delighted
by its taste. The young boy originally named it as ‘epsicle’, combining icicles
and his name, but later he changed it into what we know it as popsicles.

Superglue

Harry Coover, in the year of 1942, was searching for a
material that he could use to build clear plastic gun sights for the war, but
ended up with a chemical substance that would stick to everything it made
contact with. Despite that, his invention was rejected since the researcher
didn’t find any use of the sticky substance. Later in the 1951, the formulation
was innovated by Cooper and Fred Joyner as ‘alcohol-catalyzed Cyanoacrylate
Adhesive compositions’ or as we know superglue. And from the on the superglue
was embraced as one of the most useful invention.

Lessons we learn from watching Squid Game

Image by <a href="Image by Chetraruc from Pixabay“>Pixabay

Around 400 people sign-up to participate in games that they might have played during their childhood. Winners are promised cash prizes worth billions! Sounds too good to be true right? However, here’s the catch. Failing to succeed in these games may cause you to lose not only the money, but also your life! If that wasn’t shocking enough, with each eliminated player, more money gets added on to the intended cash prize. The events that follow post this realization forms the rest of the story in this series.

This Netflix series went on to earn critical acclaim upon its release. Millions of viewers across 94 countries tuned in to watch this thriller series. Its gripping plotline will surely keep you at the edge of your seats! But with the statistics and its popularity aside, let us look at some of the lessons this South Korean survival-drama taught us viewers.

If you haven’t watched the series yet. Be warned, there are serious spoilers ahead!

  1. Kindness can come from the strangest of places.

The very first game in the series stands as a witness to this claim. Amidst all the chaos and panic that erupted due to the massacre in the game ‘Red light, Green light’. A character named Ali had the heart to lend a helping hand to Gi-hun, one of the pivotal characters in the series. He risked his life to save a complete stranger during a life or death situation.

This certainly gives the viewers a hope that help will surely come during the different walks of life. It also encourages us to lend a helping hand like Ali, irrespective of familiarity with the person or the kind of situation.

  1. As you sow, so you reap.

In the Squid Game series, Gi-hun’s generosity towards Il-nam was truly heartwarming. When nobody expected Il-nam to stand a chance in the games. Gi-hun stood by his side, encouraged him and supported him when necessary. However, little did he know that the person he was helping was much more than a frail old man with brain tumor. His kindness earned him the favor of a multi-billionaire well wisher who turned his life around for the better. Well….financially at least.

  1. Being strong is good, but thinking smart can take you a long way.

Take the game of ‘Tug of war’ from the Squid Game series for example. The opponent team appeared strong indeed. But we were rooting for the team that consisted of a relatively less muscular batch of players. With the addition of a frail old man in the team, their chances of winning were very less. But Il-nam the old man was full of surprises!

The techniques of winning the game that he shared with the team gave them a temporary upper hand over their opponents.  When they seemed to be losing in front of their opponents’ sheer strength. Sang Woo’s idea of the element of surprise brought them a life-saving victory over their adversaries. Moral of the story: Be strong, think smart.

  1. Money is important, try not to run out of it.

The billionaires who created the squid games, played with the desperation of almost 400 money deprived people. Many of the participants were in huge debts and needed the cash prize to survive in the real world. Although one can do more than just survive with the cash prize on the line, greed and need forced the common and subtle people to go up to extreme lengths.

Hence, it is better to be educated, find a stable job, have insurance for your future, and make investments and expenditures wisely. Sang Woo from the Squid Game series is often criticised for the deceit he carried on against his friends and trustees. But it isn’t hard to understand why he did what he did. After drowning upto his neck with financial difficulties and his lonely mother waiting for him. Anyone would have done the same thing if they were in his shoes.

  1. Sure, Money is important. But money isn’t happiness

Winning the intended cash prize along with the 455 others’ share of money. Gi-hun indeed won big in life. But what was left of him by the end of the Squid Game was a traumatized soul after witnessing the death of his friends and the dead body of his mother.

Il-nam, who is revealed to be the billionaire master-mind behind the squid game, couldn’t buy joy and happiness with all the money he had. As he participated in the games alongside the other participants, he experienced happiness as he re-lived his childhood memories and found a good friend in Gi-hun. But his idea of Squid Game was inhumane and barbaric.

The series ends with Il-nam dying, having made a questionable decision about starting the Squid Game and being the reason for the deaths of almost 400 people. Gi-hun is shown moving to the US after a significant makeover with his appearance, only to discover the Squid Game’s establishers seeking the next batch of participants for their game.

DISCOVERY OF PI

Have you ever wondered how pi was calculated before Newton
discovered it. Up until the 250BC, mathematicians knew for a fact that the
value of pi is between 3 and 4. And you may ask that how did they know that,
the answer to that would be that they did that with the help of a hexagon and
square.

A unit circle (area = π)
was inscribed with a regular hexagon of unit sides. And the circle was inscribed in a
square. The hexagon was then further divided into 6 equilateral triangles with
unit sides. Then the perimeter of hexagon was found to be 6 units. Since the
hexagon was inside the circle the circumference of the circle must be a little more than
that of hexagon.

Circumference > perimeter

2 π > 6

π >3

On the other hand, the perimeter of square > circumference of the
circle.

2 π<8

π <4

Hence, it was concluded to be between 3 and 4, i.e, 3< π<4.

Later in the 250BC, Archimedes improved this calculation. He bisected
the hexagon into a dodecagon (12 sides) and inscribed one into the circle and inscribed
the circle in another 12-sided polygon. After calculation, it was found that π
lies between 6.212 and 6.431. This process repeated for centuries until they
reached the 96-sided polygon and found a range of 3.1408< π<3.1429.

In the late 16th century, Francois Viète
doubled a dozen times than Archimedes and computed the perimeters of polygon of
393,216 sides. And by the early 17th century, Ludolph van Caulen surpassed
him by calculating perimeter of polygon of 2^62 sides. He spent 25 years of his
life calculating
π upto 35 correct decimal places.

People were used this method of computing pi until Sir Newton came along.
The first step to his discovery of π was building Binomial theorem from the
Pascals triangle. Sooner after he also delt with the theorem being subjected to
incompetency when power of (1+x) was -1, since it would give an infinite
series. But he proved its accuracy by multiplying both sides by (1+x). The left
hand side gave 1 straightaway and when (1+x) was multiplied on the right hand
side, every term got cancelled leaving only one.

Afterward he went for (1+x) with power of ½ to solve for the area of a
unit circle by equation of the circle, which was given by x^2+y^2=1. Hence, the value y=(1-x^2)^1/2 can be calculated by substituting the value of x by -x^2.

Right after this, he also invented calculus. And the integration from 0 to 1
was used to find the area under y=(1-x^2)^1/2 which is the area of the quarter of
circle in the first quadrant. We also know that the area of quarter of circle
is (πr^2)/4. In this case it will be π/4 (since r=1). Upon equating them and calculating we get
the value of π. To make things easier and accurate he decided to integrate from
0 to ½. It gives the area of the circle from the left of y axis to the straight line of
x=1/2. That area can be calculated as area of a sector of 30 degrees, which
will be π/12, and a right triangle of sides 1 and ½ ( we can calculate the
third by Pythagoras).

And upon equating we once again can find the value of π. Not only that
but when you solve up to 5 places of the integration, you get results π for up to 5 decimal places. And it
will take calculation of integration up to 35 terms to get what
Ludolph
van Caulen got after 25 years. This is how years of calculation was simplified
by Sir Isaac in a way it took only a few days to learn the value of pi.

CALCULATING DAYS OF A DATE

You must have seen several talent-shows where people
would guess the day of a given dates. Some of you must have thought they do it
by memorizing the entire calendar. Well, it somewhat does require memorizing,
not the entire calendar though, and the rest is basic calculation. Let’s jump
right into it.

 The method that
we are gonna discuss about is called Doomsday Rule. This algorithm was devised
by John Conway, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s perpetual calendar algorithm, in
the year 1973. By using this method anyone can calculate the day of any date in
any given year.

In this method one need to remember these special
dates also known as doomsday, these days include:

4/4,6/6,8/8,10/10, 12/12, 7/11,11/7, 9/5,5/9

[ Note- Every dates in this article are in the format
of month/day/year]

The date for the month of January and February differs
according to the leap year.

The special dates of January are the 3rd
and 4th (for leap year) and for February, it is 28th and 29th
(leap year). So, it is 1/3 and 2/28 for three years and ¼ and 2/29 the other.

For March, the special date is the pi day, that is,
3/14.

Other notable special dates are 10/31- Halloween and
12/26- boxing day.

Now, one may ask what’s special about these dates, to
that, these days in a given year appears on the same day. For example, if you
know the 12/12 is Friday, then the rest of the dates mentioned will also be on Fridays.

Now that we know the trick let’s learn about how to apply
them. For example, let’s find out the day of 11/26/2023.

For every question we need a reference date, which
could be any of the doomsday. For this case let’s take the pi day as the reference.
Once we know about pi day we will automatically know about the rest of the days.
And that’s when we face the question that how do we know that. There is a
simple trick to that as well. All you need to remember is that the pi day was a
Tuesday in the year 2000.

2000 – Tuesday

2001- Wednesday

2002- Thursday

2003- Friday

2004- Sunday

As you can see, that every year the day increments by
one and in the leap year it is incremented by 2.

When you need to find out about past dates, those of
before 2000, all you need to remember is this pattern,

1700- Sunday

1800- Friday

1900- Wednesday

2000- Tuesday

And this pattern repeats, which means 2100 pi day
would be on Sunday, 2200 on Friday and so on.

Now let’s get back to the question. So, the year is
2023. We know on 2000 pi day was in Tuesday, all we gotta do is add the number
of years plus the number of leap years to Tuesday,

Tuesday + 23 + 23/4(=no. of leap years)

Tuesday + 23 + 5 (ignoring the decimal, which is to be
done in every case, since years can’t be in decimal)

Tuesday + 28= Tuesday (*since 28 is a multiple of 7)

(*when days are added with numbers which 7 or multiple
of 7, you would get the same day)

So, pi day in 2023 is a Tuesday. After this step you
need to find the nearest doomsday to the date in question. Here, it would be
11/7. 11/7 is also Tuesday. To find 11/26 we gotta add

Tuesday + (26-7) = Tuesday + 19 = Sunday

Hence 11/29/2023 will be a Sunday.

You can go to the calendar and check if the results
are correct. You can try this method on any date and year and see it for
yourself.

LEARNING ALGEBRA FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Algebraic expressions that we see and encounter today
is way different than it was centuries ago. Until 19th century,
 they
consisted of theories. The father of algebra Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi
described algebra to be reduction and balancing of terms that is a
transposition to other sides of the equation. Algebra went through different
stages to development along the centuries. Along which the three stages that
gives us the history of symbolic algebra are to be discussed in this article.

1. RHEOTORICAL STAGE

In this stage, the algebraic expressions were written in
sentences. For example, an equation as: x+ 24= 36 would be described as
‘something added to 24 gives us 36’. It was developed by Babylonians back in
the 16th century.

2. SYNCOPATED ALGEBRA

In this stage, the symbolism was used but it didn’t
contain all of the characteristics of symbolic algebra, there were some
restrictions involved. Syncopated algebra made its first appearance in the 3rd
century AD through Diophantus Arithmetic, followed by Brahmgupta’s Brahma
Sphuta Siddhanta back in the 7th century.

3. SYMBOLIC ALGEBRA

Symbolic algebra made its appearance through Islamic
mathematicians such as Ibn al-Banna in 13-14th centuries and
al-Qalasadi in 15th century in their works. And it was fully
developed by Francois Viete in the 10th century. Later, Rene
Descartes by 17th century, introduced the use of ‘x’ in an equation.
He also showed that problem in geometry can be expressed and solved in terms of
algebra. Quadratic equations played an important role in early algebra and it
is to be noted that earlier only three types of quadratic equations existed:

x2
+px=q

x2
=px+q

x2
+q=px

Since math was used in commerce there were no use of
negative terms. ‘p’ and ‘q’ was positive in each of the above cases and so were
the roots.

On to most interesting part where mathematical
expressions were solved with geometric practices. Between the rheotorical and
syncopated stage of symbolic algebra, the geometric constructive algebra’ was
developed by classical Greek and Vedic Indian Mathematicians in which equations
were solved through geometry.

Now let’s look at this equation:

x2
+26x=27

Since we already know how to find roots of quadratic
equation, i.e. by using,

x=-b±√(b2 -4ac)2a

As they didn’t consider the negative part, let us
exclude that and put the respective values, we will get

x=-26+262 -[4×1×(-27)]2×1

x=-26+(676+108)2

And now let’s solve it with the help of figures. Taking
the x^2
as a square of side x and thus the term gives its area.
And the 26x can be denoted as rectangle with sides 26 and x and the term being
the area.

Now, if we divide the rectangle into two equal parts
which will give us two rectangle of side x and 13.

By placing the rectangles on two adjacent sides of the
square, we will see a L shaped figure which can we converted into a square if
we added a square of side 13 in the space.

And since we added a square, we now have to add 169, which
is the area of the additional square, on each sides of the equation. It gives
us

x2
+26x+169=246

 The left-hand
side of the equation represents the sum of areas of the 2 squares and 2 rectangle
and the right-hand side gives the total area. Since all the shapes collectively
makes a square, the number 246 denotes the area of the biggest square. And hence
14 will be the length of the sides. And now we know that the value of x must be
1.

While this method will only work on positive
entities and will only give the positive part of the solution, we can now see the quadratic equations from a whole new perspective.
