ARE YOU FEELING BURNT OUT?

Do you usually find yourself in your room lying down and not being productive enough? People might usually refer that behavior as laziness, but it is not laziness alone that could make you feel such a way. It might be a combination of burnout that is overlapping your productivity. Burnout is a negative state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive stress and inability to cope with it.

Here are some signs that can prove if you are feeling burnout or not.

DISCONNECTING FROM THINGS

If you are going through burn out then you might be experiencing some stuff that you aren’t really aware of, then it is called depersonalization. Depersonalization is a state in which one’s thoughts and feelings seem unreal or not to belong to oneself. It will make you feel like you are loosing your interests in things you once enjoyed or a kind of numbness that brings constant amount of sadness to your daily life.

LOST MOTIVATION

Laziness is a character trait and those character traits tend to stay over time. If you are a lazy person then you wont push yourself to do things. But if a person, who is a high achiever doesn’t feel like doing things and feels exhausted and out of space then it is true that they are facing burnout. It could be a sport, a talent or a hobby that you once loved and now might resent it just because how you overworked yourself.

MOODY AND EASILY IRRITATED

Moody and irritability is a sign of burnout that is usually overlooked. If you struggle to contain your emotions or snap out at things that never bothered you, then it is burnout. No matter if you are a very relaxed and a calm minded person, burnout will affect you and your control of emotions.

NEGLECTING SELF CARE

This is one of the most distressing sign that results in a person being emotionally and physically burnt out. There are concerning changes in your eating and sleeping patterns. You might not want to groom yourself either and just detach yourself from communication. The difference between laziness and burnt out is that you weren’t always this way.

NOTICING THESE GRADUAL CHANGES

Something we all must know bout burnout is that it develop in stages. All the points mentioned above wont happen overnight. Studies have shown that there are 5 stages that slowly but steadily engulf a person. By the time we start noticing the changes we would be in the state where the emotional and physical fatigue is more intense and even harder to treat. This could lead to depression and anxiety if not treated.

If you are one such person who is facing burnout or know someone who is going through a difficult time, reach out to people and don’t forget to raise awareness.

HOLLYWOOD’S TOXIC PRESENTATION OF MUSLIMS.

Many mainstream films depict Arabs and Muslims in a negative light. Throughout the history of Hollywood, Arabs have been portrayed in many different racial stereotypes in both Western culture and film. Often portrayed as barbaric, as oil sheiks, and most famously, terrorists.

British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmad, an Oscar nominator actor, who represents a minuscule number of Muslims in Hollywood came up with a group of activists that together launched a campaign to combat ‘toxic portrayals’ of Muslims in the film industry that is dominated by Hollywood.

“The progress that’s been made by a few of us doesn’t paint an overall picture of the progress of most of the portrayals of Muslims on screen that are still either non-existent or entrenched in those stereotypical, toxic two-dimensional portrayals,” says Riz Ahmed. He became the very first Muslim actor to be nominated for the best actor category at the Oscars for his role in The Sound of Metal.

Despite the number of Muslims in the world, the representation of Muslims in movies in the US remained at 1.6 percent. Out of 200 movies, 182, they have no Muslim characters. Among all the countries that were examined, US films had the worst representation. There is no particular representation in animation movies or series either, that’s a lot to talk for itself. A study says that most Muslims go through racism in western countries while being asked to ‘go back to their country’ or ‘ isn’t it against your religion, and ‘are you a terrorist.’

Muslim representation is rare, and when it exists, it is highly problematic. For many Muslims, it’s better to have no representation than to be shown as a negative influence on society. Muslim women characters who wear hijabs are often shown in conflict with their appearance. The act of taking off the hijab is portrayed as a sign of freedom which is the complete opposite of why the women choose to wear the hijab. Islam doesn’t force women to wear the hijab, it is all up to the women if they want to wear it or no. Due to this false representation, people think the hijab is oppression.

More than 50 percent of Muslims on screen were linked to violence and rendered as “foreigners” who are refugees or migrants, while the majority of them spoke with an accent and wore “different” clothes that make no definite sense. Despite Muslims are one of the most racially and ethnically diverse religious groups in the world, the characters are mainly stereotyped as Middle Eastern/North African. They’re also illustrated as threatening, and as subservient, particularly to white characters,” says Pillars fund, the organization that joined forces with Riz Ahmad.

YOGA

Modern life has become more chaotic and busy. This has led to the rise of yoga. Yoga provides many other mental and physical benefits. Some of these extend to the kitchen table.

There are many types of yoga, such as Hatha. It is a type of yoga that focuses on breathing exercises and a series of asanas. The goal is to get as much done as possible while not feeling overwhelmed. This practice is focused on cultivating a calm and accepting mind and body. This activity helps develop awareness of the body’s abilities. It’s not about physical appearance. Instead of mirrors, yoga studios use mirrors to help people focus their attention on the body instead of the people around them. This allows them to focus on their breathing and awareness instead of the image of their bodies.

According to the Harvard Medical School, focusing on the present moment can improve a person’s mental health. It can also help them manage stress and improve their physical well-being. Mindful eating is a nonjudgmental approach to addressing the physical and emotional aspects of eating.

They developed a questionnaire to measure mindful eating using these behaviors:

  • Eating even when full (disinhibition)
  • Being aware of how food looks, tastes and smells
  • Eating in response to environmental cues, such as the sight or smell of food
  • Eating when sad or stressed (emotional eating)
  • Eating when distracted by other things

People who practiced yoga were more likely to eat well according to their eating scores. The study also found that the amount of practice they performed was linked to the better eating habits. People who practice yoga and eat mindfully are more aware of their bodies’ natural cues when it comes to hunger. Those who practiced yoga for at least four years had a lower BMI than those who did not.

Although yoga is known to improve a person’s mental health, it can also improve their physical fitness. For the study, researchers focused on the effects of yoga on a group of individuals who were not yet active. After eight weeks, they experienced greater flexibility and muscle strength. Several studies have shown that yoga can lower blood pressure and improve heart health. It’s believed that this practice helps the body maintain its balance and senses the pressure in the body. A study found that regular yoga practice can improve the lipid profile of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease. It can also lower blood sugar levels and improve overall health.

Before you start a new exercise program, be sure to check with your doctor.

Researchers are also studying if yoga can help people with depression and arthritis, and improve survival from cancer.

HEARTBREAKING ANIME TO WATCH

Anime is hand-drawn and computer animation originating from Japan. It describes all animated works, regardless of style or origin. However, outside of Japan and in English, anime is colloquial for Japanese animation and refers specifically to animation produced in Japan. If you want to try something new then you can always jump into anime.

People usually turn up to sad songs or even sad books, but no doubt that anime has some of the most heartbreaking and sad stories to ever exist. If you are a person who likes a good crying and feel the emotions to the soul, then here is a list of anime you must watch!

A SILENT VOICE

A silent boice can be very difficult to watch. It deals with the effects of bullying, mental health and suicide. The story is a bout a young boy who bullies and young deaf girl who is a new student in his class. The girl soon leaves the school and everyone turns against the boy for treating the deaf girl harshly. Ages later they happen to meet again and the boy now is trying to pay for his guilty actions of the past. They become good friends and find a way to like each other. But the universe is not on their side and uncertain events take place that turns the entire story.

YOUR LIE IN APRIL

This anime has a great set of music and melodies as this anime about a girl who plays violin and a boy who played piano but stopped after the death of his mother. Music and loss are at the heart of the series. The time someone has with their loved ones is limited. Like a song, it will be over before they know it. But we never forget the melody. A short tale of love and friendship that touches your heart with great classical performances.

CLANNAD AFTER STORY

This anime is the sequel to the acclaimed slice-of-life anime Clannad, Clannad After Story follows it’s high school characters into adulthood. This anime gives us a box full of joys, self discoveries, and disappointments. The anime is filled with heartbreaking circumstances that can get us confused, and give us joy at the same time. At the climax of the anime Clannad After Story asks, “It is really better to have loved and lost than to never love at all?”  No matter what the answer is, the anime is meant to make you cry.

BANANA FISH

Banana fish is the story of a young gang leader investigating a strange drug. It has a dark theme with characters that have complex relationships. Banana Fish deals with the devastating events that lead a person to believe they are not worthy of love, and the healing potential of unconditional love. The tears could be out of rage or sorrow, but tears are definitely going to make its way out the viewers eyes.

I WANT TO EAT YOUR PANCREAS

Yes! I was confused of the name as well as it seems so random but once you watch this movie you will realize how deep the meaning of those words is. This anime talks about a simple and cute love story of an outgoing chaotic girl who is dying of pancreatic cancer, and a shy and introverted boy who happened to be the only one to know about her illness other than her family. They both dedicated their time in completing the bucket list of the girl as she knows she will be dying very soon. This anime is a tear-jerker but not in the way audiences would expect. There are some twists that help the movie subvert its genre. What makes I Want To Eat Your Pancreas remarkable is how it deals with the idea of chance and the choices we make when we no longer have a say in our fate.

ORANGE

This anime is about the letter that a 16 year old starts to receive from her future self. The letters inspires the 16 year old to not take any decisions that will make her regretful in the future. Her biggest regret turns out to be a friend of her’s who is no longer alive in the next ten years. Orange asks its viewers to examine their past regrets and ask if those regrets weigh more than the happiness they enjoy now.

TINY PORTIONS OF FOOD AND FANCY RESTUARANTS

It all started in France when that people decided o serve tiny portions of food for a very simple reason that is to make enough place for some dessert and a fancy coffee. When you eat a lot of food at once you tend to forgot the taste or get used to it that it doesn’t leave a mark i your memory. But the less amount of food that you eat you happen to remember the taste for a lot longer and appreciate it.

Most fancy restaurants have 3-6 course meals that makes it easy for you to try them all out . It would be a waste if you ordered a 6 course meal that consists of a large amount of food and not have enough space in your tummy to finish it off. People often happen to appreciate things that are rare and limited edition, therefore eating a tiny amount of luxurious food is somewhat pleasure seeking to the people.

The chefs don’t just make food, they make pieces of art. It is impossible to make food look art when it is served in a large amount as it might end up looking like ‘a meal that is made by emptying the fridge’. It also is very pleasing to the people when they eat something very elegant with shiny cutlery and pretty clothes, rather than eating something messy and huge with pretty clothes.

Fancy restaurants are all about dim lighting, pretty aura, and delicate fragrances. These aspects make the atmosphere look more comfortable and keeps you from leaving the place early. Whereas the scenario with tiny and cheap restaurants are that they are more prone to attract people’s gaze and are brightly lit, that makes the people cautious of what they eat, how they eat, and with who they eat.

Fun fact is that the fancy restaurants can make a new dish with the left over food and you wouldn’t know. They can actually save a large amount of food from being thrown away, that the fast food makers fail to do so.

SUPERSTITIONS AROUND THE WORLD

There are a lot of times when our grandparents or parents have stopped us from doing certain things at certain times. I have always wondered how or why do people believe that certain things as such happen. We all can name a couple of superstitions but here are some from all around the world.

KNOCKING ON WOOD

Indo-European, Celtic, or possibly British

The Indo-European or Celtic belief that spirits resided in trees could be either called for protection or chased away by knocking on their home. Most likely among the different theories, historians have attributed the superstition to a 19th-century British children’s game called “Tiggy Touchwood” in which players claimed immunity from being tagged by touching the nearest piece of wood. Adults picked up on the habit and the phrase ”Touch Wood”.

BROKEN MIRROR

Ancient Greek/Roman, and European

The belief that a broken mirror brings bad luck most likely has its origins in the simple fact that reflections of ourselves are uncanny and often unnerving. It was the ancient Romans who said that a broken mirror would bring seven years of bad luck as it was believed that only poor health would cause a mirror to crack.

STEPPING ON A CRACK

African and European folklore

The superstition of “stepping on a crack” as foretelling, or even causing, harm to a family member. As with mirrors, cracks—in the earth, on a sidewalk, or almost anywhere—have long been seen as portals to the realm of the supernatural, for both good and ill.

LUCKY HORSESHOE

Ancient Roman, Celtic/British Isles, Europe

The earliest origins of the horseshoe’s function as a good luck charm reside in its vulval shape. The most famous story of a horseshoe bringing good luck, however, refers to the story of Saint Dunstan, who apparently worked as a blacksmith prior to attaining sainthood.

BLACK CAT

European

Things only went downhill for black cats from there, with people of the Middle Ages burning them in bonfires on Holy Days like Shrove Tuesday, the first Sunday of Lent, and even Easter, and with the Puritans in America connecting them to the practice of witchcraft. Also, the color black has long been associated with evil and death, which didn’t help matters for our furry friends who had the misfortune of being born the color of night.

FRINGERS CROSSED

Western Europe, Pagan & Christian

The superstition of crossing one’s fingers is responsible in bringing good luck from pre-Christian, Pagan times in Western Europe, when the practice of making a cross with your own and the index finger of another person was thought to bring the forces of good spirits and to seal a pact or a wish with the fellow-crosser.

THE NUMBER FOUR

China

As we’ve seen with numbers like thirteen and seven, numbers are frequently assigned different magical significance or status depending on the culture in question. For the Chinese, the number “four” is a no-no, due to the similarity in its pronunciation, in Chinese, to the word for “death.”

CURSE OF THE EVIL EYE

Mediterranean and Middle East

It’s a common belief that’s been held for thousands of years that to achieve too much success would be to invite the anger or inspire the envy of the gods, who would then attract the unfortunate individual with a reversal of fortune. In response to the fear of this curse, people across the ancient Mediterranean began using amulets and beads with an image of an ‘evil eye’, sometimes referred to as nazars, which would then help ward off that horrible.

ITCHY PALMS

Caribbean

It is a common belief that an itchy left palm means you will owe money soon, whereas an itchy right palm means money is coming your way. There is an explanation that might tell us why such a distinction. The left hand seems to hold passive energy, and the right hand active energy which symbolically could explain the coming in and out of money.

HOW TO PRACTICE SELF LOVE

Self love is not only about getting a new haircut or getting new items for yourself. Self love is all about grooming oneself by gaining appreciation through the physical, mental, and emotional support. It’s not something that you can learn immediately, its a long process and you could develop bit by bit. Self love does play a huge part in our life as it is the route to stable mental health and overall happiness.

Here are few tips that are helpful.

1. FORGIVING

There are times when you are hard on yourself and hold yourself accountable for the slightest mistake possible. Self deprecation is very harmful and can break down your confidence. Mistakes are opportunities that help you grow. A better way is to take it easy and forgive yourself.

2. BEING MINDFUL

Are you working on the dreams that you want to fulfill, or are those the dreams the society wants you to fulfill? if you are able to follow what you want, how you want, and when you want it, then it will help you in taking care of your happiness. Try maintaining a journal or even meditating as it helps you stay mindful. Learn to satisfy yourself first.

3. WORK ON YOUR NEEDS

It is very important to figure out the things that make you feel better and the things that make you feel worse. Doing something that you don’t like could overwhelm you and make your day even worse. Choose what YOU want to do. It’s completely okay if you don’t want to go out partying with your friends , you can stay home and maybe watch a movie that could help you relax mentally.

4. BUILD BOUNDARIES

The purpose of setting boundaries is not to kick people out of your life but to help you understand what is acceptable and what is not. You would not want to drain yourself by keeping the company of the toxic ones. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a good example that you can use to build boundaries.

5. PROTECTING ONESELF

It is very necessary to keep yourself safe and protected from the bad company or toxic surroundings. You will need to admit the ones who are wanting to take care of you and support you. People who help you mentally and spiritually are the ones that deserve to be held on. Distance yourself from fake friends who are there to just pull you down.

6. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF

This is another important aspect that needs to be taken care of. Being too hard on yourself and punishing yourself for the un-achieved things in your life can harm your confidence and decrease your ability to work efficiently. Try to look at the bonus points and give yourself that candy that you deserve for all the hard work.

7. TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

After a very long day you would not want to do things, which is completely okay. Take that long soaking bath that you like or even finish the book that you started. Taking out some time for yourself is one of the best ways that will lead you to self love.

It is impossible to accomplish self love in a day, but the process is beautiful, it sure is long, but it is all worth the hardwork.

WHAT WIPED OUT MEGALODON SHARKS

Long after the dinosaurs were extinct from this world, Megalodon sharks were called as the biggest and the greatest hunters that chewed everything into pieces. It was known as the king of the ocean and was found everywhere in the largest water bodies. It was 2.5 million years ago when the last Megalodon sharks were seen. When the modern archaeologists searched areas, the only thing they found was a set of huge teeth that belonged to the Megalodon sharks.

large tooth of the Megalodon

These sharks had a short snout, a flat lower jaw, and a set of long and massive pectoral fins that supported its heavy weight. It is believed that the ancestors of the great white sharks were present during the Megalodon era. As Meg was not fast due to its huge body, the movements and actions were slower than that of those white sharks which were much nimble. The researchers said that the great whites would often quarrel with the giant megs for food and would actually win. They were successful because they were faster that Megs and would steal their prey before Meg could catch it.

Megalodon had no food and had to eat whales, another huge marine animal. Adult Megs could easily catch a whale but when it comes to the baby megs, they were very small and super vulnerable. Baby Megs were twice smaller in size to that of the great whites. Baby megs often made a good meal for the great whites, bull sharks, and tiger sharks which caused a threat to the survival of the Megs.

Even if the case was that the baby Megalodon was safe and not confronted by the great whites, they weren’t able to find food for themselves. The population of other sharks increased and they took all the food for themselves. That resulted in the starvation of the budding Megalodon.

As the earth was warmer before and didn’t have extreme climates it was easy for Megs to live as they prefer warm water. Soon the poles of the earth started to get colder which was another threat to the Megs . The extreme change of temperature didn’t bother the whales and many marine animals as they were adjusting to the situation. Megs on the other hand were unable to do so which left them alone in the water with no food.

Soon, Megalodons were no more.
