What Anxiety Feels and Looks Like?

There is no way I am going to pass this paper. I don’t even wanna show up. I was so uncomfortable about that party. It was difficult for me to inhale and I got all sweaty. I had to leave. I won’t go to sleep or leave the house unless I have made sure that the stove is off and the doors are locked. Sometimes I do this three or four times. I have to get to the airport six hours early. You just never know what might happen

These are the voices of people who have experienced anxiety.

Anxiety and Fear is a common reaction to present or live events, like taking a final exam or speaking in front of a crowd. But when it becomes really uncomfortable and makes day to day life hard to live, then it’s a problem, or even what we call disorder. Some people have lived with anxiety for a long time. For them, their own anxiety feels like it’s about everything. They worry about so many things in so many ways. And it impacts their life for a long time. They stress about things that are about to happen or might happen, it means they can’t really focus or where they are or whom they are with. Sometimes it results in pounding of the heart, they speak really fast, and can kinda snap at people. Their family could get really frustrated with them. When it’s really bad, they experience having a knot in their stomach all the time. They can even feel depressed and just want to be alone. They feel like if they do something, they will screw it up or something will go wrong. So, a lot of times those people would just rather avoid it all. They feel much better just staying at home and maybe having a drink. Commute out anxiety is a very common mental health symptom. It can be the main sign for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), which they have, or Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), which is when people have a fear of being in public or meeting new people. For those of us with social and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, it’s really difficult to live in the way we want to live. Some people have anxiety about really specific things, are afraid of heights, snakes, spiders or something else. Now, these are called Phobias and when people avoid these things, the anxiety mostly stays away. But when people can’t avoid their phobias, that’s a real problem. Some people experience anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which can make people really overcome with anxiety. In these conditions, anxiety can be so intense, that people are at the risk of suicide and they use alcohol and drugs to cope. Sometimes their lives feel like they have come to a halt. Some people are lucky ones, they reach out to doctors without considering it a taboo who tells them how to get the treatment that would help them. And it does, they understand now what their anxiety feels like, why it happens, what they can do about it. They got to learn some great coping skills. And just naming it helps them keep it in perspective. Sometimes their anxiety can still get pretty big, but it doesn’t seem to last quite as long as it used to. The anxiety is treatable. For most people, this is true. We can get our life back to where we want it to be.
It’s OK, everyone suffers from anxiety, without having worries, life can be too boring.

Why are students from International Boards being welcomed by Indian Universities

The world is facing a learning crisis. While countries have significantly increased access to education, being in school isn’t the same. Crisis will affect generations of students without action to boost teaching. Global learning crisis is costing $129 billion a year 10% of global spending on primary education is being lost on poor quality education that is falling to ensure that students learn. This situation leaves one in for young people in poor countries unable to read a single sentence. International students applying to foreign universities have hit a wall due to this global crisis. The dilemma to continuing with their education in India on waiting for universities abroad is faced by many students who are studying in international board. Many studies explored the challenges and hurdles experienced by international students attending institutions of higher education abroad.

Universities and college campuses are places where students live and study in close proximity to each other. They are also a buzzing cultural hubs where students are brought together from Nations around the world. Recently, the foundations of this unique ecosystem have been impacted significantly by the rapid spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, creating uncertainty regarding the implications for higher education.

One of the biggest concerns for the sector at large is the percentage of international students that make up the domestic higher education markets. This pandemic has resulted in an economic slump globally and parents are becoming conscious of the cost of sending the children abroad. As a result, international school students who would have ideally chosen to apply to universities abroad are now evaluating higher education prospects in their home country.

The question we often ask parents is : if their ward is planning to apply to an Indian university, should they opt for a school that offers curriculum from international boards, or stick to conventional Indian boards.

It is believed that it is highly advisable for parents to enroll their child in an international board as the curriculum is global and the skills amasses will ensure that every student becomes an active learner for life. These programs are brilliantly designed to help students become adaptable, thereby helping students to perform with ease in the Indian education system as well as Internationally.

It is important to understand that a rigorous curriculum ensures that students are challenged effectively to think critically and creatively. These skills along with many others these programmes inculcate, are learning for a lifetime. They are also highly sought after by universities and employers both abroad and within India.

International board follows application based teaching – It is also important at this stage to understand that while many curricula focus on teacher-led methodology, the international curriculum is more about an involved facilitation process, in order to allow the student to develop essential independent thinking skills.

Cambridge international AS and A Level is an in-depth program which helps students develop many core higher-order thinking skills that universities are looking for, such as analysis, evaluation, and synthesis. The program also focuses on building research, innovation, reflection, and communication skills in each student. These I believe are essential for the 21st-century learning and a global citizen.

Students adapting to international curriculum – Let us focus on India for the moment. Many parents were often worried if the process of transferring a child from an international curriculum to our national one is easy. Let me reassure you here that there is a smooth progression for the learners who choose to study at universities in India. These learners from international boards acquire knowledge, skills, and adaptability that enable them to enter, or re-enter the Indian education system, without difficulty as they are well prepared for independent study. All reputed indian universities accept and value international qualifications.
The subject knowledge along with the critical thinking and reasoning skills that the Cambridge International AS and A Level programme grants its students is unparalleled. And this has been of immense help to our students who have moved on to various Indian and international universities to study science, technology, law, design, medicine, management, finance, history, math, psychology, literature, research etc.

The international outcomes allow them to apply to all universities including esteemed organisations such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Institute of Technology, National Institute of Design etc.

Many students from Podar International School have over the years successfully found placements in renowned universities. I strongly believe that the skills and knowledge that they amass during their years of international education are significant contributors to them being successful in the field of their choice.

The Politics over JEE and NEET

The world today is facing a Pandemic, as WHO likes to call it and this is a situation that nobody had foreseen and many developed countries saw the crippling of their systems, countries with finest medical infrastructure saw the falling of the system like a house of cards.

In such a situation worse was imagined for a developing country like India and these fears turned out to be partially correct,by using the phrase “partially correct ” I refer to the fact that while cases are on the rise and the curve isn’t seen to flatten itself in the near future and there has been excessive burden on the medical stuff,we should also acknowledge the fact that the country has successfully managed to curb the mortality rate and after months of lockdown things are starting to get back on track and people have started to live more precautionary than before.

Now,initially there was very little information available on COVID and the precautions that can help us to fight against this virus and hence it was difficult or rather next to impossible to fight against an enemy with no known weakness but gradually there was widespread awareness and people evolved to survive!,and hence the examinations that were initially postponed were finally given a date this was particularly important because the entire academic year for college students could not be halted…its only after the JEE and NEET that popular government universities release their cut offs so it wasn’t just the medical and engineering aspirants but also the huge mass of students aspiring to study from universities like the Delhi University also the fact that private universities that are often considered as back up plans of an individual were already demanding payments of fees in order to secure a seat out there…as the exams are now being conducted it would prove beneficial to the students who were well prepared and hence will crack the examination and this would also start the academic session for the freshman year. If the exams were postponed again that would probably be next year!,we know it’ll take time for corona to stop hitting the headlines right?…so that would mean that double the number of students for limited number of seats, you can imagine the u underlying stress over the young minds.

The opposition tried to approach the Supreme Court again and supporting them were the Chief Ministers of various parties but at the same time they wanted the examination for government jobs to be conducted immediately. That is as strange as it sounds but its politics after all.The exams will be conducted and should be conducted but with utmost care and precautions because it’s the youth that will hold the pillars of the modern India and they cannot just be played with.

Who was Sati Savitri?

In our history, great sacrifices and many unsung pioneers had existed. They were either forgotten or wiped out from our Humes. Many grave sacrifices  have  become a jest in today’s world. At least once, one  may have heard someone saying ‘I am no Sati Savitri.’ or ‘Who do you think of yourself, Raja But do we know the actual story of these people? Then, let’s get to know them!

•The story of Savitri  and Satyavan

The legend of Savitri and Satyavan is also known with the name of  Pativrata Mahatma .During the Mahabharata, Yudhisthira, the eldest Pandava asked Rishi Markandeya, a great sage, who was said to be immortal (Chiranjeevi) that was there any women who was as great Draupadi, who had struggled so hard from the second she came into existence from the havankundala. Sage Markandeya described Sati Savitri who, with her true devotion and love for her husband was able to take her husband from the clutches of death. He narrates:

Once upon a time, in the lands of Madra ruled by a king named Aswapati  was a kind and humble king. But the king was always anxious to have a child. But his prayers, unanswered, he remained childless. Thus, he performed various austerities to obtain a child in the honour of Goddess Savitri, the daughter of Savitr and the wife of the creator of the world,Brahma. It is said that he offered about 1000 oblations to Goddess Savitri who exists in  the sun. After a timespan of eighteen years, for the austerities were completed, and the goddess ,pleased by Aswapati granted him a boon (vardaana)

Thus, Aswapati is blessed to have a daughter soon. He named her Savitri in the name of the goddess herself. Savitri grew up to become a maiden with exquisite beauty and honour. Due to her exceptional beauty, men were easily intimidated by her blazing lotus eyes and nobody had the guts to ask her hand in marriage. Aswapati, one day advised her daughter to choose a husband according to her wishes. She obeyed and set out to travel various different kingdoms , looking for an eligible groom. After a year, she returned to her homeland and found Aswapati with the holy sage Narada. The father  asks Savitri about the finding of a groom. Savitri informs her father about her meeting of a man named Satayavan  who was the son of a king Dyumatsena , blind and exiled, now living in a forest. Narada also says about how handsome, controlled and truthful man Satayavan was but only flawed at one place. He was going to die in the upcoming year! And Narada said that marrying him would be a grave mistake.

Aswapati refuses the marriage. But Savitri persists about how he was the only worthy man for her. At the end, Aswapati gives in and seeks out for Dyumatsena.

Dyumatsena refused the proposal at first as he thought that she was too delicate to live in a forest. But Aswapati insisted that  how her daughter knew that happiness and sorrowfulness was never permanent. And the couple got married.Savitri took a vow of triratra  where she fasts, prays and stands the whole day. Even after many months, Savitri still dreaded the day of Satayavan as predicted by Narada which was due in only 4 days. The day when both the couple were visiting the forest to chop wood, Satayavan suddenly developed fatigue. She caressed him in her lap knowing that it was time..

Yama, the god of death eventually and to take the soul of Satayavan. Savitri refused to stay away from her husband as it was the duty of a wife and husband to stay together no matter what. Yama pleased by her deep thought and grants her the boon, the eyesight and Kingdom of  Dyumatsena returns. She still continues to argue with respect to Dharma (righteousness)Yama is pleased by her devotion and offers one more boon.Savitri asks for children from Satayavan. Yama, knowing that this would mean returning Satayavan’s soul back, blessed Savitri heartily. Savitri, with her husband return to the hermitage.

Thus, many rituals till today are followed in the remembrance of Savitri

So the next time someone teases you for being sincere, be proud!!

Similarly, there are people like Raja Harishchandra, who always worked for the cause of righteousness and the people during his yuga were also happy from him as king. There are many stories about Harishchandra in various Puranas and Vedas. The legend is related to many major upcoming events as to why Draupadi’s five sons died at such an early age and how truthfulness can make wonders happen. The father of our nation,Mahatma Gandhi was greatly influenced by the stories of Harishchandra and inculcated truth in his life. Many traditions are followed by the women for their husband to live a long life. Every concept has a grave history attached to it, hidden with a deep meaning. We cannot speak truth for our whole lives   (that would be inconvenient:/ )  for we know that Raja Harishchandra had his devotion beliefs beyond materialistic needs. But at least we can try. Try to confront every difficulty in our life with an optimistic attitude. Sure, at times all you wish to do may be just bang your head in the walls due to some hurdles inspite of you being right, but this is the way of life. Or as said by wise people,’Fair means everyone gets what they want’ ( guess which book am I referring to!) and everyone can get everything because then it would not be life.

September 2: The Tree of Life’s Celebration Day

September 2 is observed as World Coconut Day to create awareness about coconut trees and its benefits. For Asian and Pacific Coconut Community including India, which mass produces coconut this day is of utmost importance.

Coconut tree is also known as tree of life because it plays a significant role in poverty alleviation and employment generation among the weaker section in the society. It is grown in coastal areas, mainly in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Because of mass production, Kerala is known as Land of Coconut Tree and it is a dietary staple in every part of India. It is used in worshipping Gods and Goddesses, is tremendously used in various cuisines, its water is a rich source of nutrients and has antioxidant properties, and its milk is used in various cooking and non-cooking purposes.

Where its edible part is useful, its outer shell and coir part is used for making doormats, its leaves are used for making roofs of huts and its sap is used in making coconut butter. A tree is important for this earth but if that tree has so many usages then it is aptly called as ‘Kalpavriksha – a tree which fulfils wishes.’

History Behind Remarkable Day

The first World Coconut Day was celebrated in 2009 which is marked as the foundation day of Asian and Pacific Coconut Community which was made under the authority of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP). It was formulated to bring up new policies and launch plans of actions to save coconut trees and create global awareness about its usage and benefits.

How to sell?

Sales is the most important process of any business organisation the survival of a business organisation depends on the shoulders of salesman. It is the main revenue generation of any business.

Below I am sharing seven powerful tips which will definitely boost your sales.

.DON’T SELL, TRY TO HELP – The first thing to do to sell is don’t sell try to help. Be a consultant to your customer and not a salesman identify the need and concern of your customer before presenting your product.

.DON’T BE DESPERATE- Your desperation can kill the lead and interest of the customer. Don’t be desperate while presenting your product desperation can create wrong image of your and your product in the customer’s mind.

.EITHER SOLVE OR ACHIEVE- Your product should either solve the problem of the customer or it should be able to help the customer to achieve his desired goal your product or service should be able to do either one of these or both.

.FOCUS ON KDM- Always focus on key decision maker. A Byjus salesman always focus on the parents and not on the child because he knows the parents are going to make the decision and not the child though the consumer of product is child but the decision maker is parent.

IDENTIFY YOUR AUDIENCE – “Every customer is not your customer” this is my golden statement. You cannot sell comb to a bald man you cannot sell trimmer to a women similarly every customer is not perfect customer or every customer is not customer to your product you should be clear about your target audience better prepare a perfect customer profile.

.BUDGET BRACKET OF YOUR CCUSTOMER- You should be clear about the budget bracket of your customer. Let me explain this with an example if you are selling mobile phones and your customer is having budget of 15k then don’t show mobiles less than 12k and and more than 16k.

.BELIEVE IN YOUR PRODUCT- You should have a firm believe in your product and you should believe that your product or your service is able to help your customer you should have firm believe in your product and you should believe that it is worth buying either it should be able to solve a problem of the customer or should be able to help the customer to achieve his desired goal and if you don’t believe in a product don’t sell it.

23.9 Present GDP – Economic will survive ? – The Q1 GDP of FY 2020-21 dropped 23.9%, revealing the extent of damage the pandemic has caused to India’s economy.

Rate of GDP

Gross Domestic Product, abbreviated as GDP, is the total value of goods and services produced in a country. GDP is measured over specific time frames, such as a quarter or a year. GDP as an economic indicator is used worldwide to show the economic health of a country.
The Gross Domestic Product measures the value of economic activity within a country. Strictly defined, GDP is the sum of the market values, or prices, of all final goods and services produced in an economy during a period of time. … GDP is a number that expresses the worth of the output of a country in local currency. For example, if the prices rise by 2% (meaning, everything costs 2% more) and the nominalGDP grows by 5%, the real GDP growth is only increased by 3%. … GDP per capita is the total income of a country, divided by the number of inhabitants. It shows how rich people, on average

The U.S. government collects and compiles economic data through the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS. Once the data is organized, it is used by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, or BEA, which is part of the Department of Commerce, to estimate the GDP and the national income.
GDP can be calculated by adding up all of the money spent by consumers, businesses, and government in a given period. It may also becalculated by adding up all of the money received by all the participants in the economy. In either case, the number is an estimate of “nominal GDP.”

Now let’s talk about Low GDP of India 23.9 percent-
Because of the lockdown, there was no labour due to lack of demand which in turn broke the supply chain causing the logistics to fall through.

Unfortunately, the road to recovery looks tough. Yields on India’s treasury bills are also at their lowest, while there is a rise in fiscal deficit and a fall in tax collection.

If all goes well, then we can hope to see the GDP reach 0 by the fourth quarter.

The only sector which made a positive GDP contribution in this quarter was Agriculture, but unfortunately, it isn’t taxed, so it couldn’t benefit the treasury in any way.

GDP at Constant (2011-12) Prices in Q1 of 2020-21 is estimated at Rs 26.90 lakh crore, as against Rs 35.35 lakh crore in Q1 of 2019-20, showing a contraction of 23.9 percent as compared to 5.2 percent growth in Q1 2019-20,” as per the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The data showed manufacturing, construction and trade sectors reported massive slump of 39.3 per cent, 50.3 per cent, 47 per cent, respectively. The government expenditure, as represented by the public administration services, contracted by 10.3 per cent, while mining and electricity sector contracted by 23.3 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively.

Real GDP growth at minus 23.9 per cent in Q1 FY21 was much lower than what markets were expecting. The print indicates that the trough in the economy was much lower than expected and the pickup will likely be more elongated. Production side was pulled down by deep contraction in manufacturing, construction, and trade, hotel, transport sectors while the expenditure side was clearly pushed lower by heavy contraction both in consumption and investment,” said Suvodeep Rakshit, Vice President & Senior Economist at Kotak Institutional Equities.

During the January-March quarter of the last fiscal, India’s GDP grew at 3.1 per cent, lowest in 44 quarters, on account of the economic slowdown in pre-COVID-19 period. Overall growth for full financial year 2019-20 (FY20) slumped to 4.2 per cent – lowest since FY09 when GDP was 3.09 per cent – compared to 6.1 per cent in FY19.

Expert says– this low rate of GDP can be recovered on the upcoming quarter. May be it can be go on 20 percent .
Because 23.9 percent low rate of GDP covered all the year.
And the rule of GDP – C + l + G + NX .
In this pattern C contributes 56% and I contributes 32% along with J contribute 11% and NX is based on net export .
GDP slow down just because the C  and I sector worked on a specific condition due to lockdown . As we know they contribute the most. Although it was bound to happen.

A brief history of India’s NAM

While looking at India’s foreign policy [IFP], one of the foremost aspects that one studies is the Non-Alignment Movement. This is because it invariably shaped India’s vision and international behavior for long periods of time.

Primarily, there were three kinds of factors that contributed to the choice of IFP. These were Personal, National and Systemic.  At a personal level, Nehru sought to pursue an ideational foreign policy and to this end he supported multilateral institutions, cut down defence spending and advocated the process of decolonisation. This doctrine of his called for going down a diplomatic path free from the dominance of superpowers but over the years, in practice, the policy proved to be more critical of American policies over those of the Soviet Union.

The policy was in keeping with the national experience of colonialism. To this end, India was reluctant to limit its foreign policy options through an alignment with either superpower. The moral stance of NAM was in keeping with India’s historical and cultural legacies as well as Gandhian heritage.

At the systemic level, the foreign policy made sense, for it enabled a materially weak state to play a role more significant than expected. It allowed for the turning of ‘limitation into asset’. Even though this worked well for India at the global level and allowed the country to play a significant role in UN peacekeeping operations, the policy fell short on a number of occasions. The stubborn opposition to defence spending led to a drastic ill preparedness of Indian military which in turn culminated in a major defeat following the dispute and war of 1962 with China.

Amidst the war and its aftermath, the three factors contributed again to a shift in IFP and security policies. At a personal level, Nehru’s hitherto unchallenged status in the political arena came under fire. There were demands of political opposition and also the abandonment of NAM, but despite these calls, the policy makers did not abandon NAM formally. On the national front, the political outcry and perceived threat from China led to a significant military modernisation programme, despite Nehru’s earlier reluctance. At the systemic level, India found support from US during and also after the China crisis.

India’s military modernisation helped India’s military intervention in East Pakistan during the war of 1971, which led to the break-up of Pakistan and the emergence of India as a dominant power in the subcontinent. However, personal factors (some of Indira Gandhi’s economic policies), national factors (oil crisis) and systemic factors (material weakness), all prevented it from playing a significant role in global affairs.

It was only after the collapse of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War that India’s foreign policy could undergo a shift and boast of a new relevance. As always, an amalgam of personal, national and systemic factors induced these new changes. On the national front, there was a financial crisis while systemic forces such as the inability to rely on the Soviet Union etc led to dramatic transformation.

Rape.

What had human beings become? Did war make us evil or just activate an evil already lurking within us?
Today am going to talk about something really common thing which is been happening around since we created all sort of barriers. RAPE .
The whole thing becomes like this evil enchantment from a fairy tale, but you’re made to believe the spell can never be broken. Rape case is just common thing in your country. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2018 annual report, 33,356 rape cases were reported across India in 2018. Out of these, 93.9 % of cases were committed by someone known to the victim. India has been characterised as one of the “countries with the lowest per capita rates of rape. Every fourth rape victim across the country in 2018 was a minor, while more than 50 per cent of them fell in the age category of 18 to 30 years, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. In practice the standard for what constitutes rape is set not at the level of women’s experience of violation but just above the level of coercion acceptable to men. It already is bigger than everything else. It lives in front of me, behind me, next to me, inside me every single day. My schedule is dictated by it, my habits by it, my music by it. After the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case in 2012, the national capital was shamed again with similar torture being meted out to a 12-year-old girl after she resisted her rapist. The ghastly incident took place in Peera Garhi area of Paschim Vihar on Thursday. The girl was stabbed multiple times with a air of scissors by the alleged rapist. The minor girl is now battling for life at the (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Th crime took place when the girl was alone at her home. Police have arrested one person in the case on Thursday evening. According to police, the accused is a drug addict. The man also spent jail time in other criminal cases and was recently released on bail. Citing sources in the victim’s family, the report said that the girl has suffered serious injuries in her private parts and intestines. The girl also suffered fractures in the head and hips. Investigators claim that the girl fought the attacker until she fell unconscious. The chief minister of delhi personally visited the victim but no news channel is the covering report. After all news channel is only worried about the TRP. AND THE HEADLINES ARE “ ACTOR AMITAB BACHAN WALKED HIMSELF AND HE HAD HEALTHY BREAKFAST” “ACTOR KAREENA KAPOOR KHAN SON TAIMUR WAVED TO OUR REPORTED”
According to several search engines the 1st rape case was The Mathura rape case, an incident of custodial rape in India on 26 March 1972, wherein Mathura, a young tribal girl, was allegedly raped by two policemen on the compound of Desaiganj Police Station in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.
The question is who is responsible for these crimes? Who created these barriers which stop women to raise their voice against these crimes? It already is bigger than everything else. It Women were scared to fight for themselves. Combat and rape, the public and private forms of organized social violence, are primarily experiences of adolescent and early adult life. And the only solution to stop these crimes is to come together and be a backbone of women and break all the barriers to empower women.

Mass Extinctions: The Troughs of Biological Evolutionary History

With 2020 turning out to be a very abysmal year, complete with natural disasters and pandemic, I’m positive that many of us, at some point in time, have heard, seen or shared jokes about how the ‘end’ is approaching. Though it doesn’t intimidate our dear Earth,as it already has some experience in witnessing the wiping out of most of the life forms, then, in habitation. Infact, this occurrence, known as mass extinction, has been a part of evolutionary history for several times. So, now the question arises; who, when, how and also, how many times? Let’s find out.

Introduction

Earth is believed to be approximately 4 billion years old, which gives ample time to geological and biological evolution. The compilation of all those changes and evolutions structure the present day Earth, aside the anthropogenic modifications. And some of the major events of the evolutionary history of Earth are mass extinction. That’s right. Even the destruction of species after species has contributed to the shaping of Earth’s present.

The Catastrophes: Mass Extinction

Extinction is a natural phenomenon that takes place due to changes in the environment. Complete disappearance of a species is its extinction. A species is a group of organisms with similar biological, physiological and anatomical characteristics and which can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. The species which cannot adapt with the environmental changes, cannot evolve with subsequent reproduction or cannot reproduce fast enough to keep up with the decline of their population, perish and become extinct.

A typical species becomes extinct within 10 million years of its first appearance. It is estimated that 99.9% of all species that ever habituated Earth are now extinct.

Mass extinction is referred to as the event which results in the simultaneous extinction of a large number of species present on Earth. These events resulted in severe reduction in the number of organisms in a short amount of time and also decreased the speciation. Hence, the rate of reproduction slowed down, and eventually led to the extinction. It is identified by sharp change in diversity and abundance of organisms.

Mass extinction has some special characteristics:.

  • It took place over a short span of time and were quite intense
  • It was a global phenomenon and included a large diversity of organisms
  • Extinctions were believed to be more severe in case of marine organisms
  • It is considered that plant species are more resistant to extinction than animals.

Mass extinction evidences can be found in fossils trapped in rocks and rock layers, which had been deposited on Earth’s surface for billions of years. On the basis of the incomplete fossil records, 5 major mass extinctions have been identified. In the descending order of age, they are:

  1. Ordovician- Silurian Mass Extinction/Late Ordovician Mass Extinction (450-440 million years ago) at Ordovician-Silurian transition

In May 2020, studies suggested that due to global warming, caused mainly due to volcanism and anoxia, killed off 27% of all families, 57% of all genera and 60%-70% of all the species.49-60% of marine genera and nearly 85% of marine species were eliminated. There were two main causal events. In terms of percentage of genera becoming extinct, these are regarded as the second largest of the five major extinctions.

The LOME is considered to have occurred in two distinct pulses, one at the boundary of the between Katian and Hirnantian stages of the Late Ordovician Period. The second pulse occurred in the later half of the Hirnantian stage, and is associated with intense worldwide anoxia(oxygen depletion) and euxinia (toxic sulfide production), persisting through the Rhuddanian age of Silurian period.

The other plausible causes that were/are debated are glaciation, toxic metal poisoning, gamma-ray burst and weathering

  1. Late Devonian Mass Extinction (375-364 million years ago) near the Devonian- Carboniferous transition

A prolong series of extinction resulted in elimination of 19%of all families, 50% of all genera and at least 70% of all species. It might have lasted for as long as 20 million years. The beginning and end of this period is marked by Kellwasser event and Hangenberg event respectively. According to Late Devonian sedimentary records, it was a period of several environmental changes, which might have directly affected biodiversity and caused extinction. Evidence of rate of carbon burial shooting up and widespread anoxia at ocean bottoms have been discovered. Possible triggers of these changes are:

  • Asteroid impact
  • Supernovae event, which lead to drastic drop in atmospheric ozone ultimately resulting in genetic material damage due to UV rays.
  • Plant evolution and expansion
  • Weathering due to plant evolution, which caused drastic changes in nutrients cycles. That, in turn, led to deposition of surplus nutrients in water bodies, leading to eutrophication and subsequent anoxia.
  • Reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide, again due to evolution of plants
  • Magmatism
  1. Permian Triassic Mass Extinction/ Great Dying (252 million years ago) at Permian-Triassic transition

It is considered to be the most severe extinction in the evolutionary history of Earth. About 96% of all marine species and 70% of terrestrial vertebrates went extinct. In case of insects, 57% of all biological families and 83% of all genera faced extinction.

Evidence of about 1 to 3 pulses/phases of extinction are identified. The potential causes that had been identified include:

  • Meteor impact event(s)
  • Massive volcanic eruptions
  • Climate changes due to large production of methane
  • Sea level changes
  • Increasing anoxia
  • Increasing aridity
  • Hydrogen sulfide emission
  1. End Triassic Mass Extinction (201 million years ago) at Triassic-Jurassic transition

In marine biodiversity, a whole class(conodonts) and 23-24% genera went extinct. The terrestrial organisms which suffered extinction include archosauromorphs (excluding crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs) and some dinosaurs went extinct. Groups like aetosaurs, phytosaurs etc., which were previously abundant, went extinct. The Jurassic age saw a diverse evolution of dinosaurs and  pterosaurs.

The possible causes of this mass extinction include:

  • Gradual climate change, sea-level fluctuations or a pulse of oceanic acidification, decreasing diversity of land biomes
  • Trend of increasing aridification
  • Drop in sea level
  • Extraterrestrial causes; includes impact from an asteroid or comet
  • Volcanic eruptions
  1. Cretaceous Tertiary Mass Extinction (65 million years ago) at Cretaceous-Paleogene transition

This extinction is responsible for about 80% of all species of animals, including all the dinosaurs and many marine invertebrates. It also includes a range of fishes, mammals, pterosaurs and plesiosaurs, amongst other groups of animals. The main trigger for this extinction is considered to be asteroid impacts. This period recorded several large asteroid impacts. This hypothesis is further solidified by unusually high levels of iridium in the rocks of that period, which is usually not available on the surface of earth.

As the after effect of this extinction,’impact winter’ was set into motion. Due to all the ash, dust and other matter that were dispersed in the atmosphere due to the asteroid impacts, blocked out sunlight for a long period of time.As a result, plants could not effectively perform photosynthesis, and keep up the oxygen level in the atmosphere. It also resulted in shortage of food for animals. The worst hit animals were the dinosaurs, due to their massive size. The smaller animals, on the other hand, strived with storage food and lesser oxygen, and thrived after the danger passed.Other calamities induced were tsunamis, earthquakes and increased volcanic activities.

Apart from these, scientists have identified several other minor extinctions, with the help of fossil and petrological records.

Holocene Extinction: Living through History

At present, we are living through an extinction referred to as Holocene extinction or Anthropocene Extinction, which is considered to be the sixth major mass extinction. It is, needless to say, majorly a result of human activities. The current rate of extinction of species is 100 to 1000 times higher than the natural rate of extinction. The direct causes include hunting, deforestation, pollution, introduction of non native species in various diverse geographical regions etc.

If this doesn’t give mankind the wakeup call that it direly needs, I don’t know what would.

Self-Improvement

Priya Yadav,
Self-Improvement is the improvement of knowledge, status, or character through one’s own efforts. It is the quest to improve oneself in every aspect of life. By self-improvement, we make our life better in a way that makes it easier for us to reach our goals. It brings self-confidence, our attitude towards life changes and we lead a successful life. Self-improvement is a regular process, obviously, it takes time to see results and we cannot be made better in a day, so it can be possible by following self-improvement tips daily.

Stay away from Negative People
We all must have often heard that positive living and thoughts are very important in life to make us a better person, but negative people obstruct this and that is why it is said that one should always be with positive people. The main reason for this is that when you live with negative people then you’re thinking also becomes like them.
Face your fear
To improve yourself it is the most improvement that you face your fears, as long as your fears are not overcome till then you cannot become a better, so it is very important to deal with your fear. Because fear stops a person from moving forward.
Learn to believe in yourself
To do any the task in life is very important to have faith in yourself first. If you didn’t believe that you can do that, then you will not able to do that, so learn to believe in yourself.
Admit your Mistake
It is important to accept your own mistakes because you cannot make yourself a better person until you accept your mistakes. Everyone makes some mistakes in their life, but if you want that you did not make it again, so for this you will first have to rectify your mistake, which will help you to become a good person.
Every day learn something new
When in your daily life, you stick to something that gives you comfort in life, then it becomes a barrier for you to develop yourself. That is why it is very important that every day you learn something new to improve yourself.

Was Lockdown a success?

Are indians stupid ??
In India the police were beating up the people roaming outside on the street!!  You must’ve heard it and seen it on whatsapp as well .
What do you think was right or wrong ? but the bigger question is WHY ??
Why do the police have to do this ? It has been more than 3 months since the county was in lockdown  . I  myself had not gone out of my house in the time span of 3 months and I was losing my mind ! Being jailed at home was difficult but that did not mean one can go down and play or go for a walk every evening in the colony . How does it matter ? Nobody was infected in my society after all , How does it matter? I have a strong immune system ,How does it matter ? I am washing my hands every time! This thinking is DANGEROUS and this small mindset is a big side effect.  Before we find a cure to the virus , we need to cure our mindset first !!

When the lockdown was announced  the situation in delhi was very bad ,where thousands of workers started going back to their villages . Somebody had  spread this rumor that  buses are coming from UP to take them home whereas till that time there was no official announcement  .Because of this rumor there was chaos during lockdown . Who was responsible for this chaos – The virUS or US ? At Least 22 migrants lost their lives not because of the virus but because of the thought process and the shut down . THE LOCKDOWN WAS NECESSARY BECAUSE WE LIVE IN A COUNTRY where people prefer meeting their friends ,roaming on bikes even during a lockdown . Lockdown was for  those people who lack common sense !

Were we that stupid that when we were asked to sit at home for  a day and come just to the balcony, Then at 5pm people came out from their houses  and started playing garba on street. Are we  that stupid that people thought a religion can save us from a panedemic ? People started  spreading rumors like this while being at home. I  can’t imagine what they would do if they were out of their houses .Stupid people spread  fake news during a crisis !! and because of rumores like this so many states suffered. Because of these people it was impossible to make a policy that  protects us from the virus  and protect the people and their jobs as well.
There’s only one cure for this mindset – a big heart .
On the other hand people understood the importance of lockdown ,many people kept politics aside and did what they could do at their level .People took care of their family ,Many people had helped a lot so the people had no savings .

But after all these pros and cons of the lockdown , the last important thing is that yes lockdown was a success as india was named in one of the country who were dealing with this crisis in a very good manner and was recognised by WHO as well for controlling the pandemic very well  in lockdown , so yes the lockdown was a success .

Surveillance and Privacy

The debate on Surveillance and Privacy has become an indisputable component of all environments. While some degree of surveillance has always existed, in the last few decades it has expanded due rise of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs). Surveillance practices particularly in technologically advanced societies have increased because of use of ICTs.

What is Surveillance? Surveillance can be understood as any focused attention on personal details. This could be for the purpose of influence, management, or exercising control. Besides those who may be suspects (owing to their record of alleged offences), the everyday lives of ordinary people like workers, travelers etc find that their personal data is of high interest to others.

Everyday life may now appear less private, and ordinary people might feel that they are more vulnerable to control, due to the use of searchable databases, for categorizing and profiling where deep rooted questions of power are also involved. A lot of scholars have suggested that what exists now is an increased need for ethics of information in an era where we are witnessing intensifying surveillance. This is also because life chances and choices are likely to be negatively affected by the judgments made on the basis of such data, which means that surveillance is deep rooted in basic questions of social justice and freedom.

ICTs are being used to increase the power, reach, and capacity of surveillance systems. The most controversial element in this regard is the processing of personal data for the purposes of control, in order to influence or manage population. Sociologist Gary T. Marx coined the term ‘surveillance society’ back in mid-1980s. Later historians remarked that surveillance societies were becoming ‘information societies.’ Gilles Deleuze went on to suggest that we all now live in societies where cameras, personal identification numbers (PINs), barcodes are all used to determine which opportunities will be open, and which will be closed to whom in daily life.

The idea of a surveillance society gains credence by the fact that in ordinary everyday life, not only are people themselves constantly being watched, they are also willing to use such technical devices to watch others. For instance, there are plenty of domestic technologies in the market that provide video camera protection to homes and offices, such as CCTV which is now common in schools, colleges, work places etc.

What becomes important here is that in most cases, surveillance is already known about by those whose data are stored, manipulated, processed in many other ways. Sociologist David Lyon gave the example of those buying houses, they are already aware that checks will be made on them. Similarly, video surveillance cameras are visible on the street and generally speaking, people are aware that they exist. Another example being that Internet users are aware that their activities are traceable.

Thinkers recognize that Surveillance has been expanding since the start of the twenty‐first century particularly in an international response to global terrorism and now more recently to tackle the global pandemic. What it is evident is that surveillance is now much more internationally networked because of ICTs. This has inevitably led to several debates on the breach of privacy.
