So, here are few facts that can leave you surprised and might be you will be going for the adoption of another one of faithful friends after knowing these.

  • Be aware: Though it may sound gibberish but your dog or any dog can sense the difference in the time. They can even predict with regular practice of the same event that this is going to happen without you telling them about it.
  • They feel: A study has shown that even dogs can tell the difference in your affection meter as you behave with other creatures and they can become jealous of that creatures as well.
  • As smart as “US”: In Russia, even stray dogs are learning to ride subways and they carefully stop at the desired location in search of food as we all do in the search of jobs or any other task.
  • Carrying from the past: when it was not so normal to breed dogs as pet dogs used to stay in wild and from that they have learned this thing we see today in them when they curl up and sleep to protect their internal organs.
  • Sniffing it all: The power or strength of the sniffing over of the dogs are on the other level, according to some studies they can sniff the cancer cells production in our body as they release different types of waste and it can be sniffed by the dog if they are trained enough.
  • Alignment with magnetic field: Don’t be too shocked if you find your dog being picky for pooping as they tend to discrete the waste out of their system by finding the place in perfect alignment with the magnetic field of the earth.
  • Unique Print: Just like us humans they also have something unique other than height weight and appearance to brag about. They have a unique nose print that stays always wet as they can sniff all the scents around them or almost anything they can sniff.

WHY ONE SHOULD ADOPT STRAY DOGS?

The human-dog relationship has been around for over 15,000 years.   A new study shows that even untrained, homeless and abused, stray dogs can understand the language of our bodies. India has the world’s largest number of stray dogs, approximately 30-35 million.

But still, many continue to regard street dogs as a threat and disease-causing animals. These ill-treated & famished animals often find it hard to feed themselves. They mostly depend on eatables lying in the waste, food left by people outside their homes & whatever little food some caring people feed them. They have no voice to word the many horrors faced by them, their pains, their suffering. But just like us, they have feelings. They too feel everything & most of the time, they feel rejected, ignored, scared, and like a menace. Covid hasn’t been hard only on humans. It has affected those poor creatures too, with little to no people leaving their homes & everything closed, it has gotten even harder for them to survive.

Pet dogs aren’t chased & captured by the Municipal dog vans & neither are they beaten. Having an average lifespan of 15 years and a high fertility rate, they may produce a puppy every six months. Their pups are also more likely to go on to have an easy and long life.

But these forlorn street dogs are less likely to complete even five years of their life. Having a low fertility rate, they also produce fewer and weak babies. The survival rate of their babies is even lower, with many of them dying within their first few days or months. Even if they somehow manage to survive, they can be at any moment, captured & taken away by the Dog catching vans.

THE COMPASSIONATE INDIAN YOUTH

However, times are changing the youth is more aware, more compassionate & more giving towards these animals. Not only are they volunteering for good deeds, but they have also set up many NGOs, many organizations to feed and take care of the street dogs.  Many of them are even open to adopting the indies, providing them a happy and healthy life with a forever home. Adopting a stray dog means saving their life.

One such NGO is “Perroayuda Welfare Foundation” a youth-based organization with a simple and heart-warming motto, to lend a helping hand to stray animals in need. During COVID-19 lock-down, they fed over 900 dogs a day. “Thuvani Foundation” donated 1000kg of rice, feeding more than 9000 dogs. An Agra-based NGO fed and gave shelter to stray dogs during strict COVID-19 lockdown.

Udaipur based, Animal Aid Unlimited; People For Animals, Red Paws Rescue, Stray Relief And Animal Welfare (STRAW), The Blue Cross of India, International Animal Rescue Goa are just a few NGOs, making life a little better for stray animals.

REASONS TO ADOPT

  • The Indies are much well-suited to the heat of India, unlike pugs, huskies, Great Dane, dalmatians, golden retrievers, etc, as they are non-native to the country.
  • They have very high immunity & do not fall sick easily. They rarely suffer from obesity & hip dysplasia problems.
  • They are very low-maintenance. Basic nutrition, exercise & regular vaccines are enough to keep them in the best of their health.
  • They are not very picky and eat anything given to them with love.
  • Extremely trainable & easily adaptable to changes.
  • The Indies are an unmatchable race when it comes to intelligence. They are very alert. Another factor that contributes to the intelligibility of these dogs is high competition to get through a day.
  • They don’t shed much.
  • They will love you far more if you love them a little. They love wholeheartedly & are very protective of their owners.

So, Let’s be human & start adopting & loving these adorable dogs. They need love more than anything & we should do our bit in making India a better place for them.

Who let the dogs out ?!

Often walking along the road, you see those cute eyes, furry beautiful souls, and you just can’t help but fall in love with them. You snuggle with them , give all your hugs and kisses to them, but often forget that they also need some food along with your love.

A recent judgment by Delhi High Court has been in the news for various reasons. For starters , the judgment has come as a relief for the animal lovers, who do their bit in taking care of the street dogs. Secondly , it has reminded us of our responsibilities as a human beings.

This pandemic has been tough not only for us but also for the animals. The only difference being, they cannot voice their pain. Many people can resonate with their pain and take out time to make sure that the street dogs in their locality don’t sleep on empty stomach.

Delhi High court in its landmark judgment emphasized on RIGHT TO FOOD of the street dogs. Yes you heard right, just like human beings, animals too need food to survive. And the court through it’s judgment has made sure that the people living in the societies take up their responsibility to feed the dogs and take care of them.

After a long standing dispute between a Delhi resident ,who was also the plaintiff and the animal lovers who had been feeding the dogs in the colony near the former’s home, the court gave a judgment in favour of the dogs.Keeping in mind the concerns of the plaintiff too, the court also reiterated that proper care and caution should be taken while feeding the dogs ,as no harm or nuisance should be caused to other individuals in the locality. While ensuing one’s rights, make sure that it does not impinge upon others’ rights.

The court emphasised that ” Animals have a right under law to be treated with compassion ,respect and dignity.Their protection is moral responsibility of every citizen, government and non government organisations. The court has made the RWAs ( Registerd welfare associations ) to take up the responsibility to make sure that the street dogs in their respective territorial areas are fed and taken care of. They have to establish ” feeding areas” where the dogs need to be fed and tended and such areas should be such that are less or not frequented by people so as causing no nuisance to the people living in or near the locality.

Always keep a small pot filled with water right outside your house so that those adorable friends of yours never go thirsty. You can also chalk out a timetable with your friends, to feed the dogs turn by turn.

These dogs are on duty 24 X 7, guarding your house and the locality from suspicious strangers. In return they don’t ask for much. Keep showering them with your love and also some food everyday so that they know they are being cared for as they do for you.

The pandemic had surely made it much difficult for the dogs in the beginning to get food due to less movement of people due to the lockdown , but now with opening up of the places, don’t forget about the dogs ; they for sure have been locked out of the houses but don’t lock them out of your hearts.

Adopt, Not Shop: Why It Is The Better Way

Most of us, at one point of time or another, have dreamt of having a pet. And amongst them, dogs have a soft place in the heart of the majority. And why not? They are the sweetest creatures you can ever come across, extremely loyal and are very unique companions. Apart from being cuddly and best at making puppy eyes (no pun intended! ), that is. So, when we think of bringing a furry friend home, we often think that they come with a hefty amount. But now times are changing. People are realising the worth of adopting. And if by any chance anyone reading this is planning to get a furry friend, I’ll try to put my point forward that why we should ‘Adopt, Not Shop’.

Adopting a dog gives a chance to a good life for two dogs. One is to your pet, who might have had faced something traumatic in life, and is in need of love and understanding. In such cases, the bonding between the owner and the pet is much stronger. As for the other one, adopting one dog opens up the slot for another one. So, one more rescued dog would have better facilities, better environment to develop and will have better access to the opportunity to be adopted by another good Samaritan. It is a kind of an endless chain of goodwill and love.

Another advantage of adopting over shopping is that they are really cheap in comparison to the market prices. And at the same time, there is a full blown possibility of you finding your one true loved breed amongst the less fortunate ones. With love and care, each pup blooms out to be a gorgeous dog, adopted or otherwise. Also, all the money that was to go in purchasing the dog can be used instead for the costs of food and grooming. Maybe give your furry friend a good spa day!

Another point to note is that the pet you purchase from a breeder or from a shop is most likely to be a puppy. Now no offense to the puppy lovers, but let’s agree on one thing, it’s hard to train the younglings. A puppy is no different. With the usual care that a pet deserves, they also require extra attention and training. Not an affordable thing to do for many people. INstead, if an older dog is adopted, they already have an understanding of how things work and can also be left alone for a longer period of time (not that everyone wants to do that).

And lastly, you would be standing against an inhuman practice. Of dog breeding. Though not in the mainstream media, but in recent times, the pathetic conditions of this industry has come forward, where the female dogs are treated as nothing more than a birth machine. Often, the living and food standards are very bad. All and all, this is an inhumane way to fulfill and keep up with the market demand. The scene is the same for the specialized dog breeders. All in all, the dogs are treated more with a materialistic approach rather than considering them beings with emotions.

Adopting requires just some research and patience. That goes into the shopping way too. And at the end of the day, they all are the same lovable companion we crave and can cuddle with!
