The Top Three Tools to Become a Better Teacher

Every teacher wants to be the best teacher they can be. Teachers spend much of their own time and money researching new ways to be effective and attend a myriad of classes and PD’s (professional development meetings). If you visit a teacher in their home or look at their computer or phone chances are you will see a ton of books, podcasts and articles on their chosen craft. For those who are looking to be effective teachers here are the top three tools and techniques that all teachers can use.

  1. Take Care of Yourself

This may seem like a no brainer but all teachers need to learn not only how to disengage from teaching but what is the most effective way to take care of themselves. It is so important to take time to decompress, relax and put yourself first. For teachers it is so very important to learn different ways to decompress. Some common techniques that teachers should learn include:

  • Exercise – One often overlooked way to take care of yourself is to exercise. It seems counterintuitive to spend your time outside of the classroom working out, but lifting weights and cardio can provide endorphins that can help you think more positively.
  • Yoga – Yoga can give all of the same benefits as regular exercise with less impact.
  • Meditation – Meditation can help you focus on the moment and release anxiety. For teachers that are always thinking about the classroom, meditation can provide a chance to detach.

By taking care of themselves teachers can avoid ruining their immune system and burning themselves out. Being able to engage with students and the craft is imperative and teachers taking care of themselves can help.

  1. Positive Outlook

One of the things that affects a teacher greatly is their outlook on their profession. For many teachers the thing that makes teaching hard is their own outlook on the profession. It is really easy to get stuck in a negative mindset and allow that cycle to spiral out of control. With positive outlook teachers make sure to focus on the positive in some of the following ways:

  • Focus on Student’s Strengths – It can be tempting to focus on the things that certain students aren’t doing. All that’s needed is to flip that mindset. Instead of being annoyed that someone is habitually late, focus on the things they do well in class.
  • Start Your Day with Something Positive – Teachers who enjoy their jobs start their day with something that puts them in a good mood. For some that’s arriving ten minutes early for a cup of coffee in silence. For others that’s cranking some music before the school day starts.

A good baseline is also trying to make sure that you praise more than you correct. A 4:1 ratio is what most teachers shoot for with 5:1 being a high goal to stretch for. When the focus is constantly on the positive, that mindset soon becomes the default outlook.

  1. Using a Curriculum Map Template

For many teachers they get stressed by coming up with lesson plans on the fly or when they feel unprepared for an upcoming unit. One of the easiest ways to take that anxiety away during the school year and to maintain a good balance of home and work life is to use a curriculum map template and plan in the summer. Making use of this tool outside the normal school year allows for:

  • Time to Reflect – When you are planning during the school year it is too hard to properly reflect on your lesson planning process. Doing it in the summer allows you to reflect and plan in peace.
  • Plan New Content – When planning during the year teachers are often surviving, not thriving. Planning during the off season allows teachers to contemplate new ideas that they might not otherwise think of.
  • Focus on the Big Ideas – By using a curriculum map template teachers can make sure to focus their units and plans on the big ideas that they want students to take away.

All in all, for many teachers the summer is a time to decompress and relax but it should also be a time to reignite the passion for the craft of teaching. Coming up with new plans and ideas allows for that fire to be rekindled and helps from feeling the weight of only being one step ahead of the students.

About Teacher's Day

About Teacher’s Day

A teacher holds our hands, frees our minds, and touches our hearts. They are a friend, philosopher, and mentor. There is no way to minimise a teacher’s role. The day set aside for teachers in schools, colleges, and universities is known as Teacher’s Day in various nations around the world. The day varies from nation to nation. The fifth of October is celebrated worldwide as World Teachers’ Day. The custom of celebrating Teacher’s Day on September 5th in India dates back to 1962.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in this year. He was a politician, philosopher, scholar, teacher, and his tireless efforts to advance education made his birthday a significant day in Indian history. On this day, we honour the excellent work of this outstanding person.
Actually, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a likeable professor who was well-liked by his pupils for the example he always set in front of them. So, one day, his friends and pupils asked him to let them throw a spectacular birthday party for him. In return he remarked that it would be his delight and honour if they celebrate his birthday in favour of all instructors. Since then, the fifth of September has been celebrated as Teacher’s Day.
Speaking of the rest of the world, World Teachers Day was first observed on October 5th, 1994. This custom was established by UNESCO. The emphasis set by UNESCO was to recognise the dedication, success, and contributions that teachers have made to the field of education. Now, why is October 5 observed as Teachers’ Day? On this date in 1966, a special intergovernmental conference approved the UNESCO recommendation pertaining to teachers’ statuses.
Why do We Celebrate?
The most influential job in the world is teaching. Children’s minds are supposed to be shaped by teachers, and without knowledge, no one can survive in this world. Kids learn the exact value from their teachers, who transform them into responsible adults. So, nearly each united states celebrates Teacher’s Day. In India, we now celebrate Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birthday with joy. He developed into a character with many defining characteristics and a beloved teacher by his students.
In the event that anyone wanted to celebrate his birthday in any way, he requested that it be observed as an honourable day for all the academics inside the United States. In India, we have fun these days at the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He turned into a person of many exact traits and a favourite instructor amongst students. It turned into his request that his birthday ought to be celebrated as an honorable day for all the academics withinside the united states, in case a person is wishing to have fun his birthday at all. Therefore, to put it briefly, we commemorate Teacher’s Day because teachers have been the architects of society, and without them no civilization can proceed along the path of advancement.
In his book “Political Thinkers of Modern India,” he made a point about the value of teaching and education in a developing nation like Democratic India. He contends that teachers play a vital part in the development of nations and that they merit greater respect. He was not just a thinker and teacher, but also a philosopher.
A teacher is “the one who prioritises presentation to converge multiple currents of thinking to the same aim,” according to a book he previously authored on the Bhagwad Gita.
Most of the political figures of the period, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad, were supporters of his nation-building philosophy by the time he entered politics. His skills were shown in the sphere of politics also. He had the political acumen to foresee the obstacles and also has the necessary fortitude to chastise party leaders for their tardiness and slackness. He first alerted the former members of Congress to the grave dangers posed by corruption and nepotism in 1947. We are currently addressing it!
A standing ovation is obviously appropriate for such a man. Therefore, this day is observed in order to promote the ideals and principles of a true teacher.

Five scientific steps to ace your next exam

1. When to Study

Studying time is more efficient if it is spread out over many sessions throughout the semester, with a little extra right before the exam.
Cover each piece of info five times from when you first learned it until your exam. It will enable you to retain the information with minimal effort.

2. What and How to Study

Testing yourself, so you have to retrieve the information from memory, works much better than repeatedly reviewing the information, or creating a concept map (mind map).
After the first time learning the material, spend the subsequent studying to recalling the information, solving a problem or explaining the idea without glancing at the source.

3. What Kinds of Practice to Do

For a particular exam, use the following:

  • Mock tests and exams that are identical in style and form.
  • Redo problems from assignments, textbook questions or quizzes.
  • Generate your questions or writing prompts based on the material.
4. Make Sure You Understand

Passing and failing rest on whether you understood some important ideas.
Your top priority should be to understand the core concepts. Identify the core concepts and make sure you can explain them without looking at the material.

5. Overcome Anxiety

Anxiety makes it difficult to remember things. To help overcome this, make some of your studying sessions like a mock exam, using the same seating posture, materials, and the same time constraints.

Tips to get more marks in exams!

Just knowing the answers to the questions isn’t enough. Most of the time, it matters how you present your answer sheet. The person who will check your paper probably has about 50 – 100 other papers to go through. And that is a tedious job.

So, if he opens your answer sheet and finds all sorts of gibberish in there, well, you better be making sense. On the other hand, with neat paper, the checker might just go easy. So here are some tips on how to present your answers in a theory paper:

Starting with the topics you remember well

Start by answering those questions you can answer properly. The sequence of answering doesn’t matter as long as you write the correct question number to the answer. This way you will not only boost your confidence but also the person who checks your paper will get a good impression.

Draw diagrams wherever required

This will help you form your answers better and make your answer sheet more interesting. Teachers recommend drawing diagrams, especially in subjects like biology. Draw them neatly, label whatever is supposed to, and use a pencil(and preferably a scale) to draw.

Write answers in point form

Do not go on writing paragraphs after paragraphs after paragraphs. No one is going to sit and read every word of it. It’s always better to write the main point and elaborate it in minimum sentences. Underline the keywords in every answer. In the case of numerical- write the formulas used, show the final answer and always write the units wherever required.

Write as neatly as you can

Everyone appreciates good handwriting. So try to be neat. But, don’t let that slow down your speed.

Select the questions carefully

In case you have an option between which questions to solve. Once you get your question paper, spend the first five minutes analysing the questions. Don’t freak out after seeing the questions. Read the questions carefully and try to recall the answer points. You can write down the points in short at the back of your answer sheet (to help you recall later on). Select the questions that you are confident about and try to stick to them. You might not make the right choice later during the exam.

Recheck your paper at the end

Try reserving the last 10 minutes of your exam for rechecking your paper. You can come across silly errors that might’ve cost you your marks or there might be an instance where you forgot to write a particular answer. So, it’s always safe to go through your paper before submitting it.
