SIVAGAMIYIN SAPATHAM

Sivakamiyin Sabadham is a historical Tamil novel set in 7th century South India written by Kalki in 1944. Kalki Krishnamurthy, recipient of India’s highest literary honour – the Sahitya Akademi Award. Believed by some to be one of the first historical novels in Tamil it was originally serialized in the weekly Kalki magazine for about 12 years. Along with Ponniyin Selvan, this is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels ever written in Tamil Set in 7th century south India against the backdrop of various historical events and figures. The novel created widespread interest in Tamil history when it was being published in the 1940s. Mahendravarman I, the Pallava emperor plays an important role in the first half of the story while his son Narasimhavarman comes into his own as the novel progresses. The plot revolves around the historical events of the Chalukya king Pulakesi II playing a siege of Kanchi and Narasimhavarman avenging this by attacking Vatapi the capital of the Chalukyas. The novel is divided into four volumes.

PART 1:PARANJOTHI’S JOURNEY

The novel begins with the arrival of paranjothi in the city of kanchi to attain tutelage under the Tamil saint Thirunavukarassar. But he ends up saving the damsel Sivagami and her father Aayannar from a mad elephant by throwing a spear at it, almost by reflex. There is considerable unease in the town since the Chalukya king Pulikesi is on his way to attack Kanchi. That night Paranjothi is arrested by the guards and is kept in a cell since Mahendravarman wants to see and jail the young man who saved the life of his most important artists. But Paranjothi manages to escape from the prison with help from Naganandhi.

Naganandhi takes him out of the Kanchi fort through a secret tunnel to meet the master sculptor Aayannar, who stays outside the fort in a small settlement. Paranjothi plans to join the sculptor as a student and believes that should be possible since his uncle, a friend of Aayannar, has provided a letter asking Aayannar to take care of his nephew. Naganandhi, who has promised Aayannar that he would get him the secret behind the dyes used in the Ajanta paintings under Chalukyas, asks Aayannar to send Paranjothi on a trip to the vindhyas  to meet a monk who Naganandhi says, should give Paranjothi the secret formula for the dyes. Accordingly, Paranjothi is sent with a note written by Naganandhi.

Narasimhavarman continues visiting his lover, Sivagami who has mastered the ancient Indian dance form, bharathanatiyam. But this growing romance between the prince and the sculptor’s daughter does not have the approval of the king. Mahendravarman also orders a livid Narasimhavarman, that he should stay in Kanchi and safeguard it when he goes and takes care of Pulakeshin in the battle field.

Meanwhile, en route, Paranjothi meets a soldier, Wajrabahu, who gives him company till the inn where they decide to stay for the night. When Paranjothi is fast asleep, Wajrabahu changes the content of the letter that Paranjothi is carrying. What change is made is absurd. The next day both part ways. Paranjothi is captured by the soldiers of the approaching Chalukya army. He is taken to Pulakeshin and presented as a spy. Pulakeshin deciphers the letter that Paranjothi is carrying to mean the young man should be given the secret of the Ajanta dyes. Unable to communicate with Paranjothi (since Pulakeshin does not understand Tamil and Paranjothi does not understand Kannada). Pulikesi asks Wajrabahu to interrogate the surprised Paranjothi. Having confirmed from Wajrabahu that Paranjothi indeed knew nothing, Emperor Pulakeshin the great orders Paranjothi to continue his journey to the Vindhyas accompanied by his soldiers. Wajrabahu informs the scared Paranjothi not to worry and asks the young man to trust him. Paranjothi leaves from Pulakesi’s camp with some soldiers accompanying him. At night when the soldiers are asleep Paranjothi escapes with the help of Wajrabahu who takes him to the Pallava camp. Paranjothi believes Wajrabahu is a Pallava spy only to later realize that it is in fact the Pallava King, Mahendravarman himself.

PART 2:THE SIEGE OF KANCHI

Seven months pass and Paranjothi is now a trusted and able commander in Mahendravarman’s army. With the battle with Pulikesi fast approaching, Paranjothi returns to Kanchi and soon becomes a close friend of Narasimhavarman. The prince also finds him a suitable companion to describe his lost love and longing to meet Sivagami. Satrugnan, the spy chief, in the Pallava army, comes with the news from the emperor asking Narasimhavarman to launch an attack on Durveneedhan, a local chieftain who tries to attack Kanchi in this hour of crisis.

Aayannar and Sivagami, after being prodded by Naganandhi leave from their settlement to a Buddhist monastery to get away from the impending war. Naganandhi almost gains Sivagami’s trust by promising her that he will make her famous by arranging for her performance in all the important sites of the  Chola and pandya kingdoms. From the Buddhist monastery Sivagami notices Narasimhavarman chasing Durveneedhan’s forces and in a sudden twist of events Narasimhavarman rescues Aayannar, Sivagami from an impending flood. Unknowst to them the flood actually results due to the breach of the bank of a lake by Naganandhi.

The prince, sculptor and the dancer along with Gundodharan a student of Aayannar (who is actually a spy working for the Pallavas) take refuge in the village, Mandapapattu. The romance between Narasimhavarman further blossoms with Sivagami getting convinced that the prince would eventually marry her even though she is a poor sculptor’s daughter. Naganandhi tries to assassinate Narasimhavarman but is locked in a room in a temple by the quick wits of Gundodharan. Naganandhi, however, manages to escape and steal the royal seal of the Pallavas. The emperor Mahendravarman reaches the village and almost begs Sivagami to forget marrying Narasimhavarman something which Sivagami claims is very difficult for her to do. Finally the royal party leaves for Kanchi leaving behind Aayannar and Sivagami.

Mahendravarman returns to Kanchi. Nanganandhi is arrested by Mahendravarman in Kanchi. As per the orders of the king, the fort is properly protected and is ready to face the invasion of Pulakeshin’s army. The siege of Kanchi by Pulakeshin begins.

PART 3:THE MONK’S LOVE

Pulakeshin tries bulldozing his way into the fort only to realise that Mahendravarman has fortified the city almost impregnably. He decides to camp outside the fort as long as it takes since he believes that the stockpile of food would soon run out in the fort forcing the Pallava king to surrender. But the city of Kanchi has stocked well and continues to thrive and Pulakesi realises that his forces are running out of food and the elephants are slowly turning uncontrollable.

He calls truce and says he wants to enter Kanchi as the King’s friend much to the disbelief and dismay of Narasimhavarman, who does not trust the sincerity of Pulikesi. But Mahendravarman tries to convince and finally makes sure Narasimhavarman is not in town when Pulakeshin enters it, by asking the prince to go to war with the pandya kings in the south. Pulakeshin enjoys the royal hospitality. Sivagami comes from Mandapapattu and performs in the royal assemblage after being ordered by Mahendravarman. Aayannar and Sivagami stay in Kanchi waiting for the fort gates to reopen. Pulakeshin leaves Kanchi and on the final day Mahendravarman reveals how he managed to outwit him as Wajrabahu.

Mahendravarman releases Naganandhi. Not aware of the danger that awaits them, Sivagami and Aayannar leave Kanchi using a secret tunnel only to be caught by Pulakeshin’s forces. Naganandhi dressed as the king Pulakeshin rescues Aayannar from the soldiers. Mahendravarman is seriously injured in a battle with Pulakeshin’s forces. He is bed ridden and realises his folly of extending a hand of friendship to the Chalukya king. He orders Narasimhavarman to avenge this shame to the Pallava dynasty and rescue Sivagami from the clutches of the Pulikesi.

Sivagami is taken along with the other prisoners to Vatapi. Naganandhi confesses his love for Sivagami to a shocked Pulakesi, who promises to take care of Sivagami. Naganandhi leaves to take care of other matters at hand. In Vatapi, Pulikesi raises a victory column claiming his victory against the Pallavas. Sivagami refuses to dance in front of the Persian emissaries in Pulakesi’s court. But Pulakesi devises a devious way of making her dance by beating the captured Pallava citizens and stopping only when Sivagami dances.

Humiliated Sivagami vows that she would not leave Vatapi until Narasimhavarman burns it down and rescues her. She cites the vow as a reason and refuses to come with Narasimhavarman when he makes a secret visit to come and rescue her.

The play beautifully depicts the eroding moral values during Pallava period in Tamil country.

PART 4:THE SHATTERED DREAM

Nine years pass. Mahendravarman has died, never recovering from the injury he sustained from the battle with Pulakeshin’s army. Narasimhavarman, now crowned King, is married to the Pandya princess, Vanamadevi. He continues his preparation for attacking Vatapi. Meanwhile, the differences between the brothers Naganandhi and Pulikesi increases. Naganandhi believes that he should be ruling the country, something he forsook when he took up the Buddhist way of life. He also hides from Pulakeshin the fact that the Pallava forces are on their way to attack Vatapi. What further adds to Nangandhi’s anguish is the non-subjugation of Sivagami.

Pulakeshin visits Ajanta to take part in a cultural festival and at that time Narasimhavarman reaches Vatapi. The citizens of the fort offer to surrender. Meanwhile, a battle ensues between the returning Pulakeshin’s army and the Pallava forces outside the Vatapi fort. Pulakeshin is killed in this battle but this information is not known to the Pallavas since the body is taken and cremated by Naganandhi. Naganandhi returns to Vatapi as Pulakeshin (through a secret tunnel) and withdraws the surrender offer.

The novel climaxes with Naganandhi being allowed to escape by Paranjothi on the grounds that Paranjothi does not want to kill a Buddhist monk. Paranjothi feels disturbed with war and the cost that humans have to pay and announces that he taking the life of a Saivite and takes up the name Sirunthodar. Sivagami is united with her aging father. She is initially heart-broken on realising that Narasimhavarman is married to someone else, but later decides to dedicates herself to the God Shiva of Kanchi,Ekambareshwar.

ENVIRONMENT- THE BEAUTY OF EARTH

Our environment is one of the most important aspects to survive on this planet. Moreover, it is the only thing that can make life sustainable. Without it, we cannot survive even a single day.Furthermore, we will not have food and water to survive. And this will also be possible because of the imbalance of heat and atmospheric pressure. Thus it is important that we should take care of the environment.

World Environment on 5th June every year. Furthermore, the world environment day is run by the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP). Above all the main purpose of celebrating this day was to spread awareness. The awareness was about the conservation of our environment.

On the world environment day, we all take a day off from our work. Moreover, we all plant small saplings in a barren land so that it may grow and flourish in the land area after some years. Also, we take part in various processions to make people aware of this day. So that they may also take part in protecting our environment. The school provides buses to take the students to the jungles. There they come to know about the different types of plants. And the types of vegetation in which they survive. Also, the students have to bring a sapling from their homes and plant them inside the ground. Further, it also creates an emotional attachment to the environment.

Moreover, disease like lung cancer is affecting even the minors. As a result, is a major threat to the people living in urban areas. To reduce the risk of air pollution China is establishing various air purifiers in their ecosystem. With the help of these people are at least getting pollution-free air to breathe. In addition, it is also taking mandatory measures like population reduction, banning the use of plastic, and planting trees in every community.

PLANNING- process and importance

WHAT IS PLANNING?????
Planning is a common term which focuses on pre deciding the things which we have to do later. Not only deciding the things but also planning includes thinking of the ways by which we can complete a particular plan successfully. It is an important parameter of the management and we need to plan things in the every sphere of life so that we can go on accordingly. Planning is the combination of creativity and innovation. Planning is done to perform any task effectively and efficiently so that there is no hurdle between the complete process of the task which we wish to perform. In the business world, it is said that planning acts as a bridge to reach the position where we wish to reach.
STEPS OF PLANNING
Planning is not an easy task rather it is a combination of several steps. The complete process of planning has been divided into 7 different steps which are mentioned below –

  1. To set objectives i.e. to decide where we aim to reach. It is basically aiming the destination. Every organization has some targets and thus has to complete them so setting objectives is the first and important step of the planning process.
  2. To develop premises i.e. to set assumptions. No work is completed without a risk and assuming things. So premises are basically assuming what can be done. So making those assumptions is the next step.
  3. To identify alternative courses of action is the third step i.e. once the objective has been set and assumptions have been made, then it is the time to identify and think the proper course of actions which must be performed to reach that particular aim.
  4. To evaluate alternative course i.e. to think of the advantages and disadvantages of each course of action and to find what alternative can work for it if that would not happen.
  5. The next step is to select the best alternative which would be suitable according to our aim. The best plan is adapted and implemented.
  6. The next step is to implement the actual plan which has been thought of yet. This is the step where actually planned course of actions take place and where actually the work is done by the individuals.
  7. The next and final step of the process of planning is to follow-up the actions. In this step all the validation and verification occurs that whether the planned process is going on with the same flow or not. Also it is seen that whether the plan needs any change or it should go on like that only.

IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING

  1. Planning tends to reduce the uncertainty of occurring a process.
  2. It is very essential to provide a proper direction to the plan.
  3. Planning helps to promote innovative ideas and thus the planned work is done more efficiently.
  4. Planning helps in decision-making and dividing the equal amount of work to each individual of the group or team.
  5. Planning reduces confusion at any level of the process.
  6. Planning helps in setting some goals and thus an organization does better work.

PONNIYIN SELVAN

Who should be the king? This was the question that members and enemies of the chola dynasty were asking each other in 10th century Tamil Nadu and the incidents around this episode forms the plot for R. Krishnamurthy’s (pen name: Kalki) epic novel Ponniyin Selvan. He was also the first significant historical novelist in Tamil and his other works include Parthiban Kanavu and Sivagamiyin Sabatham.

Parantaka Chozha was succeeded by his second son Kandaraditha as the first son Rajaditha had died in a battle. On the death of Kandaraditha, his son Maduranthaka was a child and hence Kandaraditha’s brother Arinjaya ascended the throne. After Arinjaya’s death, his son Parantaka II, Sundara Choza was coronated. He had two sons, Aditha Karikalan and Arulmozhi Varman and a daughter Kundavai. When the story starts, the emperor Sundara Chola is ill and bedridden. Aditha Karikalan is the general of the Northen Command and lived in Kanchi and Arulmozhi Varman is in Sri Lanka in battle and their sister Kundavai Piratti lived in Chola royal household at Pazhayari.

One person who gets a glimpse of the Pandya conspirators is a warrior of the Vana clan Vallavarayan Vandiyathevan. Even though the book is titled Ponniyin Selvan, the hero of the book is Vandiyathevan, a friend of Adhitha Karikalan. It is through Vandiyathevan that we meet most of the characters in the novel such as Arulmozhi Varman, the prince whom all the people loved and Periya Pazhavetturayar, the chancellor who married Nandini when he was sixty. During his youth Aditha Karikalan had fallen in love with Nandini, but she turned vengeful after Aditha Karikalan killed Veerapadyan (who was either Nandini’s father or brother) and vowed to destroy the Chozha dynasty.

Besides these, there are other characters like Maduranthaka Thevar, the son of Kandaraditha and the man whom the conspirators want to crown king, and Anirudha Brahmarayar, Sundara Chozhar’s Prime Minister and the man who has eyes and ears everywere. There are some lovely women too, like Vanathi, the Kodumbalur princess who is in love with Arulmozhi, Poonkuzhali, the boat woman who rows the future king to Lanka, Mandakini, the deaf and dumb step mother and Rakkammal, the wife of a boatman who supports the Pandya conspirators. Most memorable among these is Nandini, who has the power to make influence any man.

With the help of a boat girl, Vandiyathevan reaches Sri Lanka and meets Ponniyin Selvan and becomes his close friend. In Lanka, Ponniyin Selvan realizes that his father had spent some time in an island near Lanka and had been with a girl born deaf and dumb.Later one day in Thirupurambayam forest Vandiyathevan seens Nandini and the Pandya conspirators place a small boy on a throne and take a vow in front of him. Who is this boy and what right does he have to the thone? This is the kind of suspense that is maintained throughout the novel. While coming back from Lanka, Ponniyin Selvan is caught in a cyclone and goes missing. Rumor spreads that he is dead, but he survives and stays at Choodamani Viharam, a Buddhist monastery in Nagapattinam. Then slowly the dispersed family starts asembling. The conspirators meanwhile choose one day in which both the king and both his sons would be assasinated.

Will the conspirators succeed in killing Sundara Chozha and crowning Madhuranthaka as the king or will Ponniyin Selvan be the king? That is the summary for the story. But then it is not that simple either for all the people in the novel have long histories of interaction with each other and everything is not as black and white as it seems. There are new revelations and relations being established all the time. and even when you think you can predict what is going to happen, new surprises pop up.

The three strengths of Kalki are plot, characters and dialogue. There is not even one dull moment in this 1800 page book. Suspense is maintained throughout the novel and when you think you have understood his techniques, the characters themselves reveal that they are not who you think they are. Even the last book is a page turner due to the unexpected turn of events. The dialogue between the characters are very poetic which looks odd in English. I am sure would have sounded beautiful in Tamil.

There are couple of points of irritation also. The author for some reason decides to pop into the novel at some places and give some commentary which is sometimes a detail about history, or a rationalization of events. This intervention broke the flow and I felt would have been more appropriate as an appendix or a separate article. In the book, Vandiyathevan goes to Sri Lanka in a boat rowed by the boatwoman Poonkuzhali, but there is very less detail of the type of boat or how they were able to navigate the ocean.

This was originally published in Tamil, but thanks to the translation by C.V.Karthik Narayanan, non-Tamil reading people like me can enjoy this classic work. People who can read Tamil have certified that this translation is excellent. Though this book is quite lengthy it is a page turner.

HARRY POTTER

The Harry Potter books are very successful upon their being published. The Harry Potter books describe us as muggles, non magical people who live our lives not knowing the existence of wizards. Wizards are usually tolerant and good toward muggles. The book thins the line between real life and fantasy.Harry Potter with a scar on his forehead, usually broken glasses, his small skinny frame and lateness about learning the wizard world, is that underdog hero that everyone covets to see. He succeeds in his endeavors because he is enthusiastic, he has a significant amount of courage, and the best friends anyone person could hope to have.

It’s stunning how much more he cares about other people than he does himself. The book contains all the elements of adventure stories, coming of age, monsters, magic, sports, and miracles. It’s like a snickers bar. Everyone loves chocolate, caramel, peanuts and nougat. Put them all together and you have one tasty concoction. According to the book, it’s the only all-magical town in Britain. Starting in the third year, the students are allowed to travel there, which is only a few miles away, on scheduled visits.

Ron Weasley is the best friend of Harry Potter. His self esteem is as erratic as the stock market. Unlike Harry, he has no financial means. His father is a member of the Ministry of Magic and his family is backed by generations of pure blooded wizards, but Ron is often picked on by Malfoy for wearing tattered robes, for living in an old house, and for not having a rich father.Harry are inseparable. Ron tends to be perceived as a sidekick to Harry, which is not true at all.

In at nutshell, Hermione Granger is a know-it-all who is never shy to voice her opinion. In the same way that Harry represents courage and Ron represents loyalty, Hermione represents the only brain the trio seems to have. I honestly wonder what they would do without her. They always rely on her expert spell knowledge and quick thinking. Hermione was born to a muggle family, but she is the top student in her class. Although she disapproves of Ron and Harry’s behavior (sometimes), she stands by them. When in doubt, she turns to books. She is a type of person that believes a book has the answer to almost any problem.

In the book, she’s stressed by work constant conflicting with Ron, so several times she snaps and lets loose of the rule breaking demon inside of her, once hitting Malfoy, and another time walking out on Divination class when the professor insulted her. It is her magic hourglass, called the time turner that allows her to go back in time to take extra classes, and helps her and Harry save Sirius and Buckbeak.

Harry Potter is the thirteen-year-old protagonist of the story and the entire series. He is famous in the wizard community for being “the boy who lived”. When he was one year old, the most powerful dark wizard Lord Voldermort tried to kill him but the curse rebounded upon him and he nearly died. As a result of the curse rebounding back at Voldermort, Harry was left with a small lightening shaped scar on his forehead. Harry doesn’t remember these events, and because was orphaned by Voldemort’s attack, he lives with his aunt, uncle, and cousin.

The point of view for the entire book is third person limited. Third person limited point of view is essentially living through only one character, usually the main character. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the character you live through is, you guessed it, Harry Potter. We get a sense of Harry’s thoughts and senses constantly. Every single part of the book we read through Harry’s, eyes, ears, smell, touch, tastes, and thoughts.

SHOPPING IN INDIA

The crumbling sound of new shopping bags,  the moment when you discover that one dress or trinket that you absolutely must own are some simple joys of shopping, glittering, line between those who shop for utility, and the more amazing kind that are shopaholics. So if you’ve crossed that line and come over, and are looking for a change from your own city then there are a numerous place for shopping in India.

If you have to choose one place in India to shop at for everything traditional and ethnic, it has to be Jaipur. Mirror Work, tie and dyes, exuberant embroideries and just so much color, break for amazing street food and you are set. Maybe even buy some traditional puppets. Jaipur is undoubtedly one of the best shopping places in India. When you are done pampering yourself, also hoard some beautiful, and mostly hand-painted and natural color printed home decor goodies, from cushions, bed sheets to rajaais.

While the Pashmina Shawls and Silk Carpets and just a handful of saffron are going to cost you a pretty big sum, you can be assured that these three are Kashmir’s absolute favourites and worth all the money. And don’t forget to hoard Paper mache boxes and handicrafts for family and friends too.

If there is one place where you get the best of both traditional, ethnic and contemporary as well as budget street shopping and splurging designer labels, it is Delhi. The sheer variety on this city’s list is amazing and this makes it one of the best place to buy clothes in India. Don’t miss Sarojini Nagar and lajpat nagar if you are interested street shopping and clothing (sometimes even top brands) and jewellery on a budget.

You just don’t leave Chennai without a bright Kanchipuram Sari. Even if you don’t wear saris too often, a fine silk sari is essential, and if you are looking for a special one, it doesn’t get better than this.Do visit Pondy Bazaar and maybe grab a bite at Anna Salai in between. Express Avenue and Phoenix Market  City are some popular malls for shopping in India.

While Ahmedabad may not have the most happening shopping scene, it does offer some of the best options for ethnic wear in North India. Step out proudly with a colourful and glittering ghagra cholis.

DOES CARTOONS INFLUENCES THE CHILDREN IN A POSITIVE OR A NEGATIVE WAY?

Children watch cartoons all the time and kids enjoy them very much. The influence is not always negative on the children. In cartoons, . For example, in the cartoon movie “Cars”, it shows that people don’t win the race at the starting line, and there are many difficult obstacles that you will need to solve in life. Also, cartoons show that if you are doing things that are wrong, you might have punishments, which also tells children you should only do the right things.

Cartoons can also teach children that friendships are important.Children can learn that friends are important and they will treat others better. For example, the cartoon “Peppa Pig” shows that you need to accept others that are different, and try to make friends with them.

When children watch different cartoons, they might imagine different themes and think about the imagined stories of different cartoons. In many cartoons, there are characters that don’t really exist. For example, Poli, from the cartoon Poli, is not a real character since it is a car that can talk. The characters let the creators represent what they want to children more easily, and the children comprehend lessons more clearly. Cartoons use many new words kids might not have heard, and when children listen to the cartoons, they can learn faster and know how to express their feelings with better vocabulary.

If you look back at the cartoons created in the 90s and the cartoons now, you will notice that the designs of cartoons are always easy and fun.Through progression in technology, cartoon developers have been able to upgrade their designs. However, the design aspects are created with maintaining and stimulating children’s minds at all times.

As you can see cartoons can be taken more in-depth when it comes to writing essay’s than one may think. While the entertainment factor will always play a major role there are more ways to look at cartoons than just “child’s play.” When you are writing the essay, look at it from your perspective from when you were a kid. What did you find essential to watching cartoons every day before and after school? How do you think it was intriguing for you to learn about life in general and friendships?

Cartoon developers are becoming more than just entertainment; they are also integrating learning as well. Most notably Dora the Explorer is known for not only teaching kid’s problem-solving skills.Children are highly amused by things that simply make them laugh. Combining learning and entertainment together for kids is an amazing influence on children.Kids enjoy laughing even though they may not completely comprehend the differences between happy and extremely angry. When children see cartoons always being friendly on a daily basis that tends to transition into how they want to live their lives.

Poisoned environment & Corporate Greed: How Non-stick cookware (Teflon) is a deadly toxicant.

How Teflon went from wartime to lunch time.

PTFE was accidentally discovered in 1938 by Roy J. Plunkett while he was working in New Jersey for DuPont. Teflon is the trade name for a plastic material called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which was discovered by researchers working for the DuPont chemical company in 1938.

There are thousands of uses for Teflon, and some are relatively unexpected. In fact, one of the first major applications to use the advancements brought on by the development of Teflon was the Atomic Bomb! Teflon’s high resistance to corrosion allowed scientist to use it as a barrier in the gaskets that held the uranium within the bomb.By 1948, DuPont, which founded Kinetic Chemicals in partnership with General Motors, was producing over two million pounds (900 tons) of Teflon brand PTFE per year in Parkersburg, West Virginia. An early use was in the Manhattan Project (Atomic Program that led to Hiroshima & Nagasaki Nuclear Bombings) as a material to coat valves and seals in the pipes holding highly reactive uranium hexafluoride at the vast K-25 uranium enrichment plant.

Teflon’s Toxic Legacy: 3M and DuPont covered up the health risks of C8 in 20th Century.

It all began in 1945, when DuPont, renamed DowDuPont following its 2017 merger with Dow Chemical, began manufacturing Teflon, a product best known for its use in non-stick cookware, but also widely used in a variety of other consumer products, including waterproof clothing and furniture, food packaging, self-cleaning ovens, airplanes and cars.

One of the key ingredients in DuPont’s Teflon was C8, a toxic, man-made chemical created by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, better known as 3M, to make Scotchgard. The chemical, also known as PFOS or PFOA, is what gave Teflon its non-stick properties.

Both 3M and DuPont were well aware of the health hazards associated with C8. But that didn’t stop DuPont from dumping the toxic chemical into local waterways, where it made its way into public drinking water and subsequently sickened thousands of people, and ultimately killing many of them.

Stories from a number of people who were affected by DuPont’s Teflon, including DuPont employees, children and adults in the surrounding community, as well as pets, livestock and wildlife.

One of those stories is that of Sue Bailey, a former DuPont employee who gave birth to a son with severe deformities. Her son, William Bailey, aka Bucky, was born with half of a nose, one nostril, a serrated eyelid and a keyhole pupil where his iris and retina were detached.

Sue’s work for DuPont required her to come in direct contact with C8. Her job involved working in a large room with huge cylinders filled with C8. The cylinders would bubble over like an out-of-control bubble bath, according to the film. The Teflon production process left behind a discharge of water. It was Sue’s job to pump it out back, where it would flow directly into the river.

DuPont tried to blame Sue for her son’s birth defects. But she wasn’t buying it. On her first day back to work, she heard her co-workers talking about another DuPont employee who had given birth to a baby with deformities very similar to Bucky’s.

DuPont knew exposure to C8 could harm human health and cause birth defects. Both DuPont and 3M had been studying the chemical since the 1960s. One study on the chemical led by 3M, determined that the chemical could potentially cause birth defects in the eyes of rat fetuses.

Studies link Teflon chemical to six human diseases

Ken Wamsley, a former DuPont employee who worked for the company for 40 years. He said the first time he heard C8 was dangerous was from a supervisor who said it might hurt pregnant women. DuPont sent all the women home, but insisted the men were not at risk.

That turned out to be a bold-faced lie.

Today, we know that exposure to C8 in drinking water is linked to six different diseases: kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, preeclampsia and high cholesterol.

Evidence shows that DuPont knew for decades that exposure to C8 could cause long-term health effects in humans. DuPont started conducting cancer studies in 1988. The company’s own studies showed that exposure to C8 killed rats, dogs and monkeys, by causing testicular cancer, liver disease and pancreatic disease.

Teflon chemical is in the blood of 99 percent of Americans and soon will be in Indians too as the hazardous chemical PFA, is still unregulated in India.

Not only did DuPont continue to manufacture Teflon, but it also continued to dump the chemical into waterways.

In 2001, a class-action lawsuit was brought against DuPont by residents of the Ohio River Valley who had been exposed to C8 in their drinking water. DuPont agreed to settle the suit, offering the plaintiffs $343 million.

C8 contamination is so widespread that, according to this article in the Intercept, 99 percent of Americans have the chemical in their blood. It’s also been found in the blood of people from all parts of the world. The main sources of exposure are still somewhat of a mystery. The likely culprits, though, are industrial waste and the consumer products that shed C8 over time.

PFAS are still unregulated in India and will cause diseases like cancer in upcoming times.

As far as India is concerned, the situation is worse as PFAs are unregulated, states the 2019 India PFAS situation Report, published by IPEN, a Sweden-based non-profit organisation.

The report clearly states that India joined as a party to the Stockholm Convention in 2006 and in turn, the Convention included India’s name to the PFA global restriction list in 2009. But, India has not accepted this amendment till now.

Yes, No PFAS substances are regulated in the country. India became a Party to the Stockholm Convention in 2006 and the treaty added PFOS to its global restriction list in 2009. However, India has not accepted the amendment listing this substance and it is unregulated, along with other PFAS.

IPEN researchers also conducted a small case study in Delhi. They found that non-stick cookware were sold under two categories: one was PFOA-coated and the other was PFOA-free cookware. PFOA is Perfluorooctanoic Acid and is known as an emerging health concern.

“Brands which sell PFOA-free cookware, usually label the product. But this label is not completely fool-proof and it is likely that many of these manufacturers are simply using fluoropolymers made without using PFOA,” state the researchers.

Fluorine-free alternatives include silicone-, ceramic- or enamel-based coatings. More research is required to be done in India to establish the constitution and shifts in the coated cookware market, states the report.

Breast milk is contaminated with PFAS substances A 2008 study found significant PFAS levels for PFOS, PFOA, PFHxS, and PFBS in women from Chidambaram, Kolkata, and Chennai.

Overall, average PFOS levels in Indian breast milk averaged 46 ppt – more than 2 times higher than the drinking water health advisory limit of 20 ppt for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFHpA and PFNA combined in the US State of Vermont. The highest level of PFOA exposure in Indian breast milk was more than 16 times higher than this drinking water limit!

PFAS pollutes river, groundwater, and drinking water, a 2016 study found 15 PFAS in one or more locations in Ganges River surface water with levels ranging from 1.3 – 15.9 ppt. Short-chain PFAS (C5 – C8) were found more frequently and the authors indicate that this is likely due to ongoing substitution by industry.

The study calculated the mean cumulative PFOS and PFOA discharges to the whole Ganges catchment area to be 240 g/day for PFOS and 210 g/day for PFOA. This area covers a population of approximately 400 million people. PFOS could not be detected at the River’s origin in Rishikesh, but levels gradually increased downstream and elevated at the confluence with the Yamuna River in Allahabad. The study also found PFAS in groundwater – which is used for drinking water as well as irrigation purposes in most of the Ganges basin.

Fourteen PFAS were frequently detected and PFHxA and PFHpA were detected in all samples. The highest intakes per kg body weight were observed for children. Another study found that the Noyyal River contains significant levels of PFOA at 93 ppt and PFOS at 29 ppt. The authors note that this could be due to extensive industrial activity in this area including textile factories that dump directly into the river. PFOS has been found in the Cooum River (3.91 ppt) and in untreated sewage (12 ppt). Tap water samples from Goa, Coimbatore, and Chennai did not contain PFOS or PFOA – but shorter chain PFAS such as PFHxS (81 ppt) instead. Note that this is four time higher than the health advisory limit in US State of Vermont which sets a drinking water health advisory limit of 20 ppt for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFHpA and PFNA combined.

What can you do about it and how can you avoid PFAs Chemical exposure?

  • Avoid buying fabrics treated with nonstick chemicals such as:
    • Teflon.
    • Scotchgard.
    • Stainmaster.
    • Polartec.
    • Gore-tex.
  • Use stainless steel and cast iron cookware.
  • Skip optional stain-repellant treatment on new carpets and furniture.
  • Eat less fast food and skip the microwave popcorn.

Where are PFAS Chemicals Found?

1.Drinking Water

EWG’s Tap Water Database, based on tests by almost 5,000 utilities nationwide, shows that the drinking water supply of at least 16 million Americans in 33 states is contaminated with one or more nonstick chemicals. Many more people were not told that their drinking water contains harmful levels of PFAS, because the test information was not made public. From what EWG has been able learn about this secret data, we estimate that 110 million Americans’ drinking water is contaminated with PFAS.

If PFAS chemicals have been detected in your water, reverse osmosis and activated carbon filters may be effective for reducing or removing the contaminants.

2.Food Packaging

PFAS chemicals are widely used to coat paper and cardboard wrappers for fast food and bakery goods.

To avoid them, skip pre-cooked, packaged foods. Cut back on fast food and greasy carryout food and cook at home instead. Pop popcorn the old-fashioned way – on the stovetop. The inside of microwaveable popcorn bags is nearly always coated with PFAS chemicals. And check out EWG’s 2017 report showing that nearly all major brands use PFAS-treated wrappers.

3. Cosmetics

Dozens of personal care products, including dental floss, contain PFAS ingredients. Choose personal care products without “PTFE” or “fluoro” ingredients.

4.Cookware

The most prominent sources of PTFE, the chemical name for Teflon, are nonstick pans and utensils.

Avoid these products by choosing stainless steel and cast iron cookware instead.

5.Clothing

Textile products labeled Teflon, Scotchgard, Stainmaster or Gore-Tex, and clothes labeled stain- or water-repellent, usually contain PFAS chemicals. Although many responsible clothing companies are seeking safer alternatives, few of these options have made it to market so far.

6. Home Goods

PFAS chemicals nearly always lurk in stain-resistant furniture and carpets, as well as in spray treatments for leather and fabric protection. Avoid the coated products when possible and skip optional stain-repellant treatments.

The Upcoming Silent Pandemic – Obesity

In Medical Science and Researches the term \’obesity\’ is none other than the silent pandemic . This is not just a statement rather we can call it a warning given by doctors, technically it means much more than to make common people (especially non-medicos) aware of the consequences that what would happen if they once get uncontrollably obesed.

As we already know how our generation has become busy in coping up with the hectic schedule that affects our daily lifestyle thus most of us are habitual in consuming packed foods to save time from cooking stuffs, preferably regular fast foods for snacks time. And why specifically the fast food comes when we talk about obesity because for the business purposes the sellers wouldn\’t give us light and good quality oils, moreover after knowing these all we still crave for the same and thus nowadays we can see every other family has one or even more members suffering with this serious condition of obesity. Therefore doctors refer it as the upcoming silent pandemic which further lead to various incurable diseases.

Its cool if we are consuming the tasty oily street side foods once or twice in a month but besides that even if we eat then must do such exercises and proper workouts in order to avoid deposition of fats & cholesterol. Usually the good quality refined (unsaturated) oils like – Olive, sunflower, ricebran, soybean are preferred, as these oils contains less amount of Trans fat over Vanaspati or dalda. This saturated fat contained stuffs like desi ghee more in Vanaspati leads the bad cholesterol or low -density lipoprotein (LPL) level to raise in our body by lowering the high-density lipoprotein (HPL) or good cholesterol. Therefore main causes of becoming overweight or obesed are-
Unhealthy eating behavior which further leads to imbalance in energy i.e. the amount of energy we take in is not equal to the amount of energy out from our body through physical exercise, high amount of stress and sleepless nights. Sometimes even genetics and family history becomes a reason for the condition of being overweight.

Now we will discuss about the measurement of Obesity. Medical practitioners measure the waist circumference and BMI to screen & diagonise obesity and overweight. According to the classification of World Health Organization (WHO), the person is obesed or not, can only be determined with the help of BMI
If the Body Mass Index (BMI) is less than 18.5 (irrespective of any gender) then the individual is said to be malnourished. Now the point is many of us are unaware about the fact how it is calculated. So the formula to measure the same is quite easy.

Basically Obesity is a medical condition  which occurs due to the increase in the amount and size of fat cells (or excessive accumulation of fat deposit ) in one\’s body .

It is regarded as the major risk factor for ample of diseases like diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, sleep apnea, coronary heart disease, arthritis, lungs and liver diseases, even risks to several types of cancer. Further in its extreme condition when the patient with obesity do not able to respond to any medicines or on the recommendation of a specific diet chart then the doctor may even do various surgeries (e.g. Gastric bypass surgery, Gastric banding, Gastrectomy ) .
Some Symptoms like excess Snoring, depression, back & joint pains, breathing disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sleep apnea indicates the condition of being obesed.
So in order to maintain a healthy weight we have to consume the balanced diet with regular practice of yoga and workouts along with positive stress free environment.
Let this already deaclared epidemic of Obesity by WHO to be under control from further becoming a silent pandemic in future days nd thus make sure that the people must value their health first with a proper consciousness in between their busy schedule to live a strong & healthy disease free lifestyle.

Saving the Environment One Step at a Time

The Earth is dying. This fact is hidden from no one anymore. A better and clearer way to say it is that the Earth is being slowly and torturously choked by the plastic that is being consumed and then left to rot by the humans. All of us know that plastic is dangerous for our environment. It is, in a way, killing us. Nature is figuratively and literally grasping at straws, pleading humans to save it. Most of us want to save the environment but we do not know the alternatives for all this plastic that we are consuming so rapidly. And this brings to light an important product that most of us use almost every day without even realizing the harm it’s been causing the whole while – Plastic Straws.

It is the most common use of plastic these days. Billions of plastic straws are used every day and then discarded away carelessly and thoughtlessly. Well, to counter this tremendous waste being generated, there is now a solution for us to try – straws made from one of the green industry’s favorite products, bamboo.

envBamboo straws are actually whole pieces of young bamboo cut into various shapes and sizes according to the needs of the users. They have a fun and quirky appearance, giving you a sense of novelty while drinking the drink of your choice in style and panache. Here are a few reasons why you should replace your plastic straws with the bamboo straws immediately.

  1. Healthier alternative

When you drink hot beverages from plastic straws, the toxins leach from the plastic, entering your body, and disrupting your hormones. They are famous for causing health problems like obesity, early-onset puberty, and sometimes even cancer. A bamboo straw, on the other hand, is free from any such chemicals, eliminating the potential for ingesting any toxin. Bamboo will act like a natural filter making your drink taste plastic-free. You can easily drink any hot or cold beverage whenever you like, without having to think twice about the damage to your health (unless the damage is being caused by the drink directly, that is).

  1. Environmentally friendly

Plastic and acrylic drinking straws are trashing the environment every day, the vast majority of which can’t be recycled. Instead, they end up being thrown into the landfills, or worse, the ocean. Plastic straws are one of the top 5 items found in the coastal clean-ups worldwide, harming marine life. Bamboo straws, on the other hand, are biodegradable and a safe and reusable alternative to plastic straws any day. They are also cheaper than their steel counterparts.

  1. Fun and Decorative

env2Apart from being non-toxic, bamboo straws have a style quotient attached to them. To alleviate the damage to the environment, more and more people are using bamboo straws in their cocktail parties, kids’ summer parties, and even for homemade beverages like hot chocolate. Bamboo straws are the new alternative to spice up your Instagram with your unique and sustainable style. They could also be used for decorative purposes, finding use in the do-it-yourself craft items.

So, what are you waiting for? Go and grab yourselves a bamboo straw and do your little bit for your Earth.
