Sweets: A Delightful Journey into Culinary Bliss

Sweets, also known as desserts or confections, hold a special place in culinary traditions worldwide. From a simple piece of chocolate to elaborate multi-layered cakes, sweets come in a dazzling array of flavors, textures, and forms, making them a universally beloved treat. The history of sweets is as diverse as the sweets themselves, often rooted in cultural and regional traditions, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of generations of confectioners.

A History of Sweetness

The love for sweets is not a recent phenomenon. Sweets have been an integral part of human culinary history for centuries. Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans were known to indulge in various forms of sweet treats made from ingredients like honey, dates, and nuts. These early desserts laid the foundation for the diverse range of sweets we enjoy today.

In the Indian subcontinent, sweets have an incredibly rich history, with a plethora of traditional sweets known as “mithai.” Sweets like Gulab Jamun, Jalebi, and Rasgulla have been enjoyed for generations and are an essential part of festivals, celebrations, and daily life.

Types of Sweets

The variety of sweets available around the world is astounding, but they can be broadly categorized into several types:

  1. Chocolate: Chocolate, made from cocoa beans, has a universal appeal. Whether in the form of creamy bars, truffles, or hot cocoa, chocolate satisfies cravings for both sweetness and a hint of bitterness.
  2. Baked Sweets: This category includes cakes, pastries, pies, and cookies. The world of baking offers an endless array of textures and flavors, from the buttery layers of a croissant to the fluffy tenderness of a sponge cake.
  3. Candies: Candies encompass everything from hard, fruit-flavored sweets to chewy caramels and gummies. They often come in a dazzling array of colors and shapes.
  4. Fruit-Based Sweets: Many sweets are made from fruits, either dried or fresh. Think of fruit jams, fruit preserves, or candied fruit peels.
  5. Ice Cream and Frozen Desserts: Cold, creamy, and available in countless flavors, ice cream is a go-to sweet treat. Frozen desserts also include sorbets, gelato, and frozen yogurt.
  6. Traditional Sweets: Every culture has its traditional sweets that are deeply rooted in their history and traditions. These sweets can be made from a wide variety of ingredients, including milk, grains, and spices.

The Art of Making Sweets

Crafting sweets is often an intricate and labor-intensive process. Skilled artisans, such as pastry chefs and confectioners, dedicate themselves to perfecting the art of sweet-making. The process can involve precision, patience, and an innate understanding of flavors and textures.

Sweets in Celebration and Culture

Sweets are an integral part of cultural celebrations and rituals around the world. In India, for example, sweets are exchanged during festivals and special occasions as a symbol of love and good fortune. Similarly, weddings often feature a grand display of elaborate sweets, showcasing the culinary traditions of the region.

Health Considerations

While sweets are a source of immense pleasure, it’s important to consume them in moderation. High sugar and calorie content can lead to health issues if consumed excessively. However, the enjoyment of sweets in moderation is a delightful aspect of life that connects people through the simple pleasure of sharing a sweet treat.

In conclusion, sweets are a testament to the diverse and creative world of culinary arts. Their history is a journey through time, their flavors a delight to the senses, and their cultural significance a bond that transcends borders. Whether you’re indulging in a simple piece of dark chocolate or savoring an intricately crafted dessert, sweets are a reminder of the sweetness of life itself.

Counter Strike First Person Shooter

Since its inception in the late 1990s, Counter-Strike has remained a cornerstone in the world of first-person shooters (FPS). Its impact on gaming culture, esports, and the broader gaming community is nothing short of profound. Developed by Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe as a Half-Life modification, Counter-Strike emerged as a pioneer in team-based multiplayer gaming, reshaping the FPS landscape forever.

Birth of a Legend

The year was 1999 when the first iteration, Counter-Strike&nbsp, was released. Its premise was simple yet compelling: two teams, Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, engaged in tactical combat across various maps. Players could buy weapons and equipment, encouraging strategic gameplay and teamwork. The formula struck a chord with gamers worldwide, captivating audiences with its intense gameplay and skill-based mechanics.

A Community-Driven Phenomenon

What truly distinguished Counter-Strike was its grassroots evolution. As the gaming community embraced it, a fervent modding scene emerged. Countless custom maps, game modes, and modifications flooded the internet, breathing new life into an already addictive experience. This collaborative effort not only sustained the game’s popularity but also nurtured an engaged and passionate player base.

Competitive Foundations

The competitive aspect of Counter-Strike laid the groundwork for what would become a thriving esports ecosystem. LAN parties and local tournaments served as the breeding grounds for aspiring pro players, fostering a competitive spirit that transcended casual gaming. The birth of leagues and events like the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) and the Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) catapulted Counter-Strike into the realm of professional esports.

Evolution and Global Domination

Counter-Strike underwent multiple iterations, with each version introducing new mechanics, maps, and updated visuals. The release of Counter-Strike: Source and later, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) in 2012, marked significant milestones. CS:GO, in particular, not only retained the essence of its predecessors but also introduced improved graphics, refined gameplay mechanics, and a more accessible interface, captivating both veterans and newcomers.

Cultural Impact

Beyond its gaming prowess, Counter-Strike has left an indelible mark on popular culture. Its influence extends to movies, television, and even traditional sports. References to the game are widespread, showcasing its penetration into mainstream consciousness. The game’s iconic maps like Dust II and gameplay mechanics like bomb defusal have become synonymous with gaming itself.

The Future of Counter-Strike

As of my last update in 2022, Counter-Strike remains a force in the gaming industry. Valve Corporation, the game’s developer, continues to support CS:GO with updates, tournaments, and a thriving esports scene. However, the gaming landscape is dynamic, and new challenges and opportunities will undoubtedly arise.

Conclusion

Counter-Strike’s journey from a humble mod to a global phenomenon is a testament to its enduring appeal. Its impact on the gaming industry, esports, and popular culture is profound, shaping the way we play and experience games. As it continues to evolve, one thing remains certain: Counter-Strike’s legacy as an FPS icon is firmly cemented in gaming history.

These monuments not only exhibit the rich cultural heritage of India but also play a significant role in fostering the economical growth. In order to sustain the rich cultural legacy, the heritage sites require time to time enhancement of the amenities. To this end and to further enhance the experience of visitors, ASI launched “Adopt a Heritage 2.0” programme on 4th September 2023 at Samvet Auditorium, IGNCA, New Delhi. Union Minister of Culture, Tourism and DoNER Shri G Kishan Reddy, who attended the launch programme virtually, urged all entities to come forward and help in better upkeep and rejuvenation of India’s rich cultural heritage, in line with the vision of ‘Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi’.

He further said that ‘Adopt a Heritage 2.0’ programme seeks to foster collaboration with corporate stakeholders through which they can contribute to preservation of these monuments for the next generations.

Under this programme, ASI invites corporate stakeholders to enhance the amenities at the monuments by utilizing their CSR funds. The programme is a revamped version of the earlier scheme launched in 2017 and clearly defines the amenities sought for different monuments as per AMASR Act 1958. The stakeholders can apply for adopting a monument or specific amenities at a monument through a dedicated web portal with URL http://www.indianheritage.gov.in, which contains details of monuments sought for adoption along with gap analysis and financial estimation of amenities. Union Minister of State for Culture Meenakashi Lekhi, Union Culture Secretary Govind Mohan and Director General of ASI, K. Meenakashi Lekhi, elaborates the importance of cultural heritage in shaping the identity.  She said that G20 Presidency is an opportunity to showcase the Cultural heritage of our country. She said that he process for selection will be carried out after due diligence and discussions with various stakeholders and assessing the economic and developmental opportunities at each monument.

The ‘Adopt a Heritage 2.0’ programme seeks to foster collaboration with corporate stakeholders through which they can contribute in preserving these monuments for our upcoming generations”, said the minister. The process for selection will be carried out after due-diligence and discussions with various stakeholders and assessing the economic and developmental opportunities at each monument.

The selected stakeholders will develop, provide and maintain amenities in hygiene, accessibility, safety and knowledge categories. In doing so, they will get an opportunity to be recognized as a responsible and heritage-friendly entity. The app will feature state-wise details of monuments along with photographs, list of public amenities available, geo-tagged location and feedback mechanism for citizens. The launch will be in a phased manner, with the ticketed monuments launched in Phase I, followed by the remaining monuments. Medical education affordable and accessible

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, who is also a known Diabetologist and Professor of Medicine, today said that the Government headed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi aims at making  Medical Education affordable and accessible, so that no deserving candidate should face disadvantage because of socio- economic status.

Addressing an Academic Meet, as chief guest, at one of India’s most prestigious institutions, Stanley Medical College in Chennai, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, medical education has been one of the top priorities of this government, which can be judged from  the statistics that from mere 145 government medical colleges, the number has increased to 260. Under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved, while Undergraduate courses have started in 19 AIIMS, he added.

The Minister said, the number of MBBS UG seats have increased from 51,348 in 2014 to 91,927 seats which is an increase of 79%. The number of PG seats have increased by 93% from 31,185 seats in 2014 to 60,202 seats, he said.

Dr Jitendra Singh said, the National Medical Commission has sought to revise the criterion for NEET UG, aiming to bring transparency into the medical admission process and stop backdoor admissions in colleges against the NRI quota.

Dr Jitendra Singh recalled that PM Modi has given a call to provide Medical and Engineering education in regional Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati & Bengali.

“Medical education has commenced in Hindi and soon Engineering studies will also begin in Hindi and translation of Engineering books has commenced in eight languages across the country, and in times to come, students across the nation will be able to pursue Technical and Medical education in their mother tongue,” he said.

Dr Jitendra Singh said that India is being looked up to by the rest of the world in the field of healthcare after the successful handling of the pandemic. Technologically and in human resources, we are much ahead of most other countries, he said.

Thanking PM Modi for bringing ‘Preventive Health Care’ into focus in the country for the first time, Dr Jitendra Singh said, under the leadership of PM Modi, in just a span of two years, India could produce two DNA vaccines and one nasal vaccine.

“The whole world recognised India’s leadership role during COVID-19, as it achieved the rare feat of delivering over 220 crore vaccinations through a fully digital platform – COWIN and the process continues,” he said, adding, “India, with 130 crore people, showed the way to the world in its fight against COVID-19 and also helped many countries particularly the neighbours with vaccines.”

The S&T Minister said, during the COVID even the West started looking up to India in search of immunity building techniques drawn from Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Unani, Yoga, Naturopathy etc.

“Healthcare sector in India is expected to grow to reach a size of $50 billion by 2025, while the global medical tourism market is estimated to be worth about $72 billion. India’s share in medical tourism is expected to be around 10 billion dollars by this year-end. Moreover, the country is the world’s largest supplier of generic drugs,” he said.

Dr Jitendra Singh said, it was the farsightedness of PM Modi that soon after coming to power in 2014, he shared the powerful vision of ‘Digital India’ much before COVID-19 hit the world.

Dr Jitendra Singh asserted that Ayushman Bharat is so far the world’s best health insurance scheme and credit goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for it.

Dr. Jitendra Singh said that New India will become Atmanirbhar in healthcare only by integrating various sciences and domains of medicine.

National Sports Federations portal on the National Sports Day

On the occasion of National Sports Day 2023, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur launched the third edition of the Fit India Quiz, among other initiatives, at an event at the JLN Stadium today.

The event was attended by almost 500 school children from various schools in New Delhi as well as several elite athletes and officials from the MYAS, SAI and the National Sports Federations.

The Minister also launched an Information booklet on Sports Infrastructure Projects sanctioned under the Khelo India Scheme as well as launched a National Sports Federations portal, while also felicitating the 4x400m men’s relay team, fresh after creating an Asian record at the World Athletics Championships held at Budapest.

Addressing the event, Shri Thakur mentioned, “The Wizard of hockey Major Dhyan Chand gave us three consecutive Olympic gold medals in hockey in 1928, 1932, and 1936. This is a fitting day for tribute to this great maestro and I’m happy to observe that over the years, coaches and athletes have also played a big role to take this sporting revolution forward. Coaches and athletes play a big role.

“There are 3526 events happening today across India and that’s a testament of the road to which we have come today. This is an unbelievable phase for Indian sports. In 60 years, there were only 18 medals at the World University Games. This year itself, we won 26 medals in the tournament. Not only that, across all sports, be it Praggnanandha in Chess to Antim Panghal in wrestling and Aditi Gopichand Swami in archery, we are getting phenomenal results. In the World Athletics Championships Budapest too, our 4x400m relay team gave a great display, along with Parul Chaudhary as well as our evergreen Neeraj Chopra, who has not got gold in every possible high scale international competition in the sport,” the Minister added.

Following two successful editions of the Fit India Quiz, the 3rd edition was also announced. It is India’s biggest sports and fitness quiz competition for school students featuring total prize money of Rs 3.25 crores. Commenting on the Fit India Quiz, Shri Thakur said, “I was amazed to see that students from the Tenga valley of Arunachal participated in the Fit India Quiz, along with remote locations in Andaman, Sikkim and so on. They were the top teams in the quiz.”

“From the field of sports to right up there on the moon with Chandrayaan, we have made our mark. This is new India. Our athletes have done it all to make us reach on top. I congratulate not just the NSFs and IOA but also the several parents and coaches who have disciplined their children and made them enter the field of sports,” Shri Anurag Singh Thakur added.

The National Sports Federations portal launched on Tuesday is in line with the Government of India’s vision for Digital India, for ensuring ease of business and good governance. It is a unified online portal for the NSFs, which shall be a single window system for processing of annual renewal of recognition of NSFs, elections of National Sports Federations etc.

This will do away with the existing system of physical mode of submission of documents by NSFs and examination of the same by the Union Sports Ministry. The online portal will also be ensuring better coordination among the Department of Sports and the National Sports Federations.

Similarly, an online application submission and processing portal was launched which will be utilized for handling all the application for creation and upgradation of sports infrastructures and demand for sports equipment under the Khelo India Scheme. This portal will be available for grantees, States, UTs for submission of their proposals of financial support through this portal from first September 2023.

The Information booklet on Sports Infrastructure Projects sanctioned under the Khelo India Scheme, meanwhile, showcases how the Khelo India Scheme has transformed the nation for sporting excellence since 2016. The booklet throws light on the entire sports infrastructure that has been developed and is in pipeline in various States and UTs of the country. The Khelo India Scheme, since its inception, has remained pivotal in sports development in the country with focus at the grassroots level.

To also commemorate the grand occasion and pay a fitting tribute to Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on the National Sports Day, sports and fitness activities were held across several Government of India offices, Union Ministry offices, Sports Authority of India centres, Khelo India centres, National sports federations as well as schools and colleges. Age-appropriate Competitive and fun games were conducted for the age groups of 18-40 years, 40-60 years and 60+ years.

NITI Aayog’s Growth Hub Program a testimony of Strong Cooperative Federalism

NITI Aayog delegation led by CEO, NITI Aayog held a meeting with the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Ministers of Maharashtra State along with senior officials of different State departments to discuss the potential of urbanization in the economic development of the country.

Urban areas hold immense potential to drive economic advancement to achieve the target of Viksit Bharat during the Amrit Kaal. It has been observed that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of several major city regions worldwide appears to match the GDP of entire countries. This intriguing trend reflects urban centers’ growing economic prominence and vitality, highlighting their pivotal role in shaping the country’s economic development. Indian cities also hold the potential to propel unparalleled economic growth which needs to be realised. While the government is exploring multiple pathways at all levels to achieve this target, strategizing \for transforming city regions into mega economic growth hubs is crucial.

Recognizing the importance of leveraging urbanization for economic growth and in line with NITI Aayog’s mandate of fostering Cooperative Federalism, an initiative focused on developing City-regions as Growth Hubs has been conceived. This initiative is a close collaboration of NITI Aayog with the State Governments and renowned subject experts. It endeavors to forge a robust economic growth strategy for city-regions across India and prepare a roadmap for achieving the same. NITI Aayog would also constitute a National Advisory Committee of renowned experts under this initiative.

In the initial stage, 4 city-regions will be taken up on a pilot basis to develop a template for devising an economic strategy. Later, it would be scaled up to 16 more cities. In addition to these, the economic strategy template will act as the model strategy for other city-regions across the country for achieving desired economic targets. Across each city region, the Project aims to deliver a roadmap for developing economic growth strategy. To achieve this, a series of activities will be undertaken including, a comprehensive baseline assessment of city region’s economy, SWOT analysis for understanding the strength and challenges of the region, identification of growth drivers, setting economic goals, designing policy enablers and proposing governance structure for projectization of the proposed strategies. The initiative is expected to support the country to achieve $35-$45 trillion Economy Target by 2047.

So far, Mumbai, Surat and Vishakhapatnam have been identified for the pilot phase. Under the priority of achieving trillion dollar aspirations of Maharashtra state economy, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) needs to strengthen the economic footprint in a sustainable manner. NITI Aayog will assist the Maharashtra State Government in developing a high-level roadmap to achieve 300 billion GDP from the current 140 billion for the MMR region. A State level committee comprising senior officials of relevant departments would also be formed to support the execution of the initiative. During the discussion, NITI Aayog team presented a set of 10-15 marquee investible projects with investment aspirations of $150 billion by 2030. These economic growth drivers will be selected based on the city’s endowments. Examples of the projects include an integrated Aerocity near the New Mumbai airport, US Silicon Valley type Artificial Intelligence hub, a global medi-city, developing Mumbai’s eastern seaboard for culture, tourism, reinvigoration of SEZ land for select manufacturing and services, master planning bullet train stations such as Virar and Boisar.

The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store: A Novel Kindle Edition by James McBride

Review
Praise for The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store:

“I keep thinking every time I read one of his books, ‘That’s his best book.’ No. THIS is his best book.” —Ann Patchett
“This is one of those novels that becomes a part of you. It’s a great book. Every character is rich; every detail is rich. I can’t recommend this one highly enough. He’s a great author and I think this is his best work.” —Harlan Coben
“With this story, McBride brilliantly captures a rapidly changing country, as seen through the eyes of the recently arrived and the formerly enslaved . . . And through this evocation, McBride offers us a thorough reminder: Against seemingly impossible odds, even in the midst of humanity’s most wicked designs, love, community and action can save us.” —The New York Times Book Review
“The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store is one of the best novels I’ve read this year. It pulls off the singular magic trick of being simultaneously flattening and uplifting.” —NPR
“[A] tour de force . . . [a] mesmerizing, moving, almost magical tale . . . [McBride] writes sentences and paragraphs that swing like jazz melodies.” —The Associated Press
“Classic McBride: He doesn’t shy away from bold statements about the national catastrophes of race and xenophobia, and he always gives us a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down. The sugar is McBride’s spitfire dialogue and murder-mystery-worthy plot machinations; his characters’ big personalities and bigger storylines; his wisecracking, fast-talking humor; and prose so agile and exuberant that reading him is like being at a jazz jam session. . . . Reading McBride just feels good—we are comforted and entertained, and braced for the hard lessons he also delivers.” —The Atlantic
“Sharp and nimble and warm as a wool hat, James McBride’s prose seems to transcend all earthly concerns, allowing him to write with compassion, humor and authority.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer
“A story of community, care, and the lengths to which we’ll go for justice, McBride’s tale is a wondrous ode to the strength of humanity in a small town.” —Time Magazine
“Enchanting . . . [a] rich, carefully drawn portrait of a Depression-era community of African Americans and Jewish immigrants as they live, love, fight, and, of course, work.” —The Boston Globe
“McBride . . . would never advance any of his books as candidates for the Great American Novel. . . . I’d like to make a case, though, for Deacon King Kong and, now, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store as better contenders for the 21st-century GAN than many other, more vaunted specimens. . . . In the words of Walt Whitman (an American writer McBride often brings to mind), they contain multitudes.” —Slate
Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of August 2023: In Deacon King Kong, James McBride spun a story of a Brooklyn neighborhood filled with beguiling and booze-filled characters that showed just how vital communities can be—and he’s done it again with The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. Except this time, we’re in Chicken Hill, a small town in Pennsylvania, where Black, Jewish, and European immigrants, rich and poor, old and young, collide—defending, fighting, entertaining, feeding, and sheltering one another. This cacophonous melody of characters with all of their schemes and dreams reveal how home is where you make it—and how all of these “outsiders” are anything but. With spunky detail, McBride masterfully makes you feel like you’re part of the neighborhood, that these are your neighbors, your friends, and enemies, drawing you in, so that you, too, know the secrets they keep, the grudges they hold, and kindness they offer. Chock full of the social, racial, and ethnic politics of a small town, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store is another irresistible stand-out from McBride.—Al Woodworth, Amazon Editor –This text refers to the hardcover edition.
