EDUCATION IN THE TIMES OF COVID

We’ve definitely come a long way now, with the pandemic forcing us to shut down public places, offices, major national organizations and institutions, and most important of all – educational institutions. Initially, the lockdown had left us totally clueless as all the conventional modes of imparting education had come to a screeching halt. It was an emergent and unprecedented situation, and major educators in the world had started looking for ‘smart’ methods to continue the cycle of research and innovation through learning. Soon enough, people came up with novel solutions to lessen the wide gap the pandemic had wrought upon. We were given alternatives to classroom teaching with virtual learning tools.

And that’s how we diversified into the online space. Beginning with conducting online classes and assessment as a temporary fix to keep the string of learning going, we are now highly considering online learning as one of the major methods as the future of education. Online teaching and learning have introduced major changes in our learning pattern and medium, from making use of presentations, simulation and graphic designing to enhance the students’ understanding of concepts to audio-visual interactions, online assessment techniques and advanced technology to aid teaching. The virtual mode of education has opened up new avenues for self-paced learning methods. The major advantage of self-paced learning is one can learn anywhere, anytime and with basic resources (a computer/smartphone, broadband connection and of course, a curious mind!) Plus, the learner can access the teaching tools at a click’s comfort and at a pace which he/she feels comfortable. all this included, one can access forums and discussions to clear doubts and connect with other learners in any corner of the world to brainstorm over ideas and solutions. Today, learning has become dynamic and is paving the way for better ways of optimization and development. Assessment methods have also become hassle-free with virtual tools with online forms, but the major drawback for this is malpractice which takes place off the invigilator’s reach of the screen. Efforts are being taken to bring this under effective control, with the help of softwares and apps which track eyeball movements, check for other malicious apps open on the student’s computer and other possible options. But this hasn’t been controlled so efficiently yet so as to completely believe in the online assessment system, and the search for effective solutions is on the go. Nevertheless, on the brighter side, education hasn’t completely come to a standstill as it would have if technological advancements wouldn’t have come to the rescue. Bigwigs in the online education space who were gaining popularity slowly before the pandemic situation benefitted with an upper hand and are now frontrunners in capturing the virtual education space. These companies, which primarily focused on capturing the attention of the child towards learning concepts in a fun way and helping the slow-paced learner pick up better with interesting teaching methods, have now dived deeper into the arena and shifted to quite a bigger space, as online education became the best viable solution to make up for physical classes. E-communication platforms which were earlier corporate-centric and better suited to long distance communication quickly altered themselves to cater the needs of the booming education sector, with focus on class meetings, presentation options and discussion platforms. All these developments are changing presumed conceptions about online learning and the face of modern education.

Some of the major hurdles to acquire effective and efficient online education currently are conducting practicals online. We do not seem to be well-equipped to go fully online and conduct laboratory and workshop sessions with the available technology and tools. Tech leaders are investing a great amount of time, money and effort to come up with satisfactory solutions to tackle this problem, which makes a big difference in higher technical education.

Virtual education has made a huge impact on our daily lives owing to technology amidst a wildly raging pandemic, and is proving to be a helpful technological aid to continue learning without time, place and barriers. The coming years will witness astounding changes and progress in educational methods.

LGBTQ IN WORKPLACE COMMUNITY

BY: VAIBHAVI MENON

“Nature made a mistake, which I have corrected.” With the changing times, The Lgbtq community has become an important aspect in our day to day life yet many people are opposed to the idea since they refuse to accept them. After the Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that marriage is a right guaranteed to same-sex couples, many believed the largest battle for LGBTQ rights had been won. And while the gains in recognition and legal protections were no doubt significant, same-sex marriage recognition alone couldn’t have possibly resolved a number of longstanding LGBTQ issues – particularly LGBTQ workplace issues. More than 53 percent of LGBTQ workers hide their identity at the workplace, often citing a persistent feeling of being unwelcome. This identity struggle has detrimental impacts on their health, happiness, and productivity, in addition to businesses’ talent retention and leadership development.

Many LGBTQ workplace issues stem from the fact that currently, there’s no federal law that explicitly protects employees from discrimination due to their sexual identity, gender identity, or gender expression. Such protections have necessarily come from state laws and federal court cases interpreting the law to protect LGBTQ workers. This patchwork of court rulings and state legislation leaves many vulnerable. LGBTQ employment discrimination laws vary between states. Only 23 states (in addition to the district of Columbia) bar discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in both the public and private workforce. All told, nearly half of the U.S. LGBTQ population lives in a  state that doesn’t prohibit employment discrimination because of sexual orientation and gender identity. While this LGBTQ discrimination in the workplace has an undoubtedly negative impact on the social and economic circumstances of  LGBTQ people, it’s the subtle social dynamics within workplaces that wreak havoc on their security and sense of belonging. The combination of the stress of hiding their identities, loss of advancement opportunities, and often pervasive negative sentiments about their identities help create a pervasive sense of isolation among LGBTQ workers.

The negative impact of non-inclusive workplace cultures ultimately proves a detriment to employers. Overall, employee engagement amongst LGBTQ workers is 30 percent lower than their cisgender counterparts, according to Human Rights Watch, while one in five LGBTQ employees report they were already considering leaving their job. If there’s a silver lining for HR and compliance professionals looking to create a more inclusive environment that prevents sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace, it’s the increased workplace loyalty, productivity, and happiness of LGBTQ workers in inclusive environments, according to Human Rights Watch. One in four LGBTQ employees surveyed reported that they’ve stayed in a job specifically because of its inclusive environment. In addressing LGBTQ workplace issues, anti-discrimination policies and employee resource groups (ERGs) are often the first efforts companies take to better establish a more inclusive environment. Human Rights Watch warns, though, that such efforts don’t always send their intended message. About half of polled LGBTQ workers say that enforcement of non-discrimination policies depends upon their supervisor’s overall feelings about LGBTQ individuals, and while 67 percent said they felt “very welcomed” by their ERG, 31 percent reported feeling only “somewhat welcomed.”

IMPORTANCE OF SEX EDUCATION

BY: VAIBHAVI MENON

“Everyone has bodies, right? It’s nothing to be ashamed of.” Sex education is the instruction of issues relating to human sexuality, including emotional relations and responsibilities, human sexual anatomy, sexual activity, sexual reproduction, age of consent, reproductive health, reproductive rights, safe sex, birth control and sexual abstinence. Sex Education is something that should be taught to individuals from a young age. Due to it being a sensitive topic not a lot of people are comfortable learning or teaching the subject because of which much importance isn’t given and this causes negative effects. Most people get aware of the word “sex” during their teen years but they dont get proper education on it and that negatively impacts their life. Sex education talks about protection from diseases like STD’s which could range from AIDS TO HIV, how to avoid teen pregnancies through different methods such as surgical methods or physical methods.

In India especially, enough significance is not given cause unwanted pregnancies or getting a disease. Therefore Evidence-based sexual health education can improve academic success; prevent dating violence, and bullying; help youth develop healthier relationships; delay sexual initiation; reduce unplanned pregnancy, HIV, and other STIs.  Evidence-based sexual health education reduces sexual risk behavior by delaying sexual initiation, reducing pregnancy and STIs, and increasing contraceptive use thereby protecting student health. There’s nothing simple about teaching kids about sex. In these times of precocious pre-teens, pregnancy among teenagers, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), children and adolescents need much more than a one-time chat about the birds and the bees. Pregnancy prevention and safe sex really should be ongoing, age-appropriate topics. Ideally, children will get all of the information they need at home from their parents, but school should also be an important source of information. Research has shown time and time again that abstinence-only education doesn’t work. Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have consistently demonstrated that teaching comprehensive sex education in schools doesn’t have the downside most people are afraid of. In other words, providing condoms in schools doesn’t encourage adolescents to start having sex earlier, or even more often. Having those condoms available does seem to encourage teens to use them, but only if they would be having sex anyway. Only 20 states require sex and HIV education be taught in schools. Sex is a fundamental part of being human; but less than half of our states require sex and HIV education, and most of what is taught is sub-par. Just because we refuse to talk about sex doesn’t mean it’s just going to go away. Only 20 states require sex and HIV education be taught in schools. Sex is a fundamental part of being human; but less than half of our states require sex and HIV education, and most of what is taught is sub-par. Just because we refuse to talk about sex doesn’t mean it’s just going to go away. Sex education is important. It’s been proven time and time again. We know students who receive formal sex education in schools are shown to first have sexual intercourse later than students who have not had sex education. Sex education does not encourage teenagers to have sex, it does quite the opposite. Every teenager should have sex education incorporated into their schooling. It shouldn’t be opt-in or opt-out but mandatory. Why should parents be able to opt their children in or out of a subject that they’ll need later in life, one way or another?

Sex education should be mandatory, comprehensive, medically accurate, and taught throughout student’s school years, just like math. It’s been shown to help students, not hurt. Not only is having access to sex education that is not only comprehensive but medically accurate a human right; it’s our fundamental duty as a society to educate the next generation. Currently, we are failing.

2021- The Best Time For Branding

There are a lot of reasons why 2021 is the best time for branding. We all know how dull has 2020 been for each sector, and also, we have realized from 2020 that nothing is certain.

The various reasons why 2021 is the best time for branding are that there are many people who are looking for work, there are many businesses which have shut down, so that gives us less competition, then a lot of established businesses are eager to partner with us. The market needs innovation. Also, another reason includes the fact that we have a lot of time in hand and that we can strategize on marketing and sales slowly, when everything gets back to normal, one can bring in innovative ways to make their products sell to the customers.

As a lot of businesses and shops have shut down operations or shut down their business itself, there is very less competition from others. So, if we can make innovative products and services which customers will appreciate, we will be able to capture the market very easily. No matter whichever age group or demographics we target our brand and pruducts with, it will be a win-win for us.

Another reason to say why 2021 is a great time for branding is that it has made more fresh talents being made. So, hiring process and hiring fresh talents will be a smoothening process. It will bring about high caliber people and bring in different areas of expertise.

2021 is a great time for branding as we can target our customers and offerings into separate demographics, interests, demands and trends. It is a great year for market penetration provided customer behaviour is studied well and can help in growth and diversification of products, services and the demographics in future when the business starts working smoothly.

There might be another reason of sustainability being a factor why 2021 is the best time for branding. Brands will think about their strategies or let’s say motives or purposes and will start to link it with environmental, social and governance commitments. There will be more interests built towards sustainable development goals and will ensure that they map the brand purpose with best fit goals. Also, there will be simlicity and decisions will be taken based on data. Every few years, businesses think about innovation and marketing, and research into this will be essential to adapt to the changing marketing conditions and the market conditions. Brands and companies will be more reliable on insights in-order to implement any new strategy and more insights will be needed to understand customers and simplify their strategies in-order to grow.

So these are some of the reasons why 2021 will be a great year for branding provided their strategies are apt and focussed. It will ensure more certainty and awareness about what changes happen in the market and what needs to be strategized in-order to excell even in uncertain times. It will make 2021 be a good success despite hard conditions.

A WORLD BRIMMING WITH PLASTIC!

Almost all the perishable and packaged food items are packed in plastic or similar materials. We find the use of plastic almost everywhere, from crockery to furniture, containers, vehicles, utensils and every other area of domestic or commercial sector. Garbage bins and landfills lie flooded all over with plastic bags, items, damaged plastic waste, etc. The reason – The human race and civilization has developed drastically and with advancing technology, we seem to have incorporated plastic into almost every product today. Life seems inevitable without the indispensable use of plastic, its variants and products. But the flipside of plastic overuse has led to production of over a billion tonnes of disposable and non-biodegradable waste. As a result, we are left with an unending heap of waste with nowhere to properly get rid of, and it eventually ends up as dump waste in landfills, polluting and leaching harmful materials into the components of nature.

How is plastic formed/made?

Plastic is usually classified as synthetic and biobased plastic. While synthetic plastics are sourced from crude oil, natural gas or coal, biobased plastic is sourced from renewable products such as carbohydrates, vegetable and animal fats, etc. As compared to biobased plastic, synthetic plastic is easier and cheaper to produce. Synthetic plastic is made from natural gas, crude oil or coal. The first step in plastic manufacturing is extraction. After this, the refining and fractional distillation process takes place (for crude oil) wherein crude oil is purified and the required components for plastic making are separated out. These materials (like naphtha) are monomeric and are converted to polymer units through polymerization. Polymerization is a process in which monomers like ethylene, propylene, butylene are converted into high molecular weight hydrocarbons, or polymers. After this in compounding, various blends of materials are mixed by melting to make formulations for plastics. On the other hand, bioplastic is made from bioethanol, which is made from the fermentation of natural/biological sources.

The major problem today is handling non-biodegradable plastic waste. These plastics do not decompose to natural and environmentally safe products over time through biological processes. The extensive use of non-biodegradable plastic is due to its durability, versatility and economical cost. Due to this, a large amount of plastic waste is generated, leading to environmental pollution. Thus, plastic is discarded easily and its accumulation in the environment leads to numerous problems. Methods have been devised to dispose it off, but these methods either release toxic by-products into the environment or are costly to treat and recycle.

The probable solutions to reduce plastic pollution focus either on treatment and regeneration of old plastic waste or choosing alternatives to plastic products or finding technologies to produce decomposable and environment-friendly plastic. Some of the methods to do this is reduce plastic usage and disposal, reuse the material in a better way, recycle the existing waste and refuse or choose other materials over plastic items, rethink on ways and means to take corrective steps towards reducing plastic pollution, repair and make smart use of the existing waste, refurbish old plastic items, remanufacture instead of revamping into wholly new plastic items, repurpose or find better ways of pushing waste to sustainable usage and recover for the spoilage of nature due to the resulting pollution. Government and watch bodies all over the world are creating a lot of awareness about the wretched situation regarding handling of plastic waste and how severely it will revert back on us if we don’t act soon and take control of it, and are taking up initiatives to improve the current scenario. The use of bio-degradable plastics is in circulation nowadays. Bio-degradable plastics are degradable to water, carbon dioxide (or methane) and biomass under specified and controlled conditions. These may not be totally efficient solution systems to non-biodegradable plastics, but they are surely less polluting and more environmentally safe in comparison. A lot of research is building up on solutions to tackle plastic garbage and we surely hope that we might find co-habitable and eco-friendly methods to its use or replacement.

THE LIPID EFFECT

We can hardly keep our hands off those scrumptious fries, kebabs, nuggets, and pakoras, wadas, chips, samosas because they are absolutely irresistible! But these deep-fried delicacies are loaded with too much oil. The result – we end up consuming more fat than required and become prone to obesity. The reason – fats are not assimilated in the body at the rate of other micronutrients like carbohydrates and are not excreted when ingested in excess. They rather get accumulated in the body and add to bad body fat and weight instead of muscle weight. Fats are calorie dense as compared to carbohydrates and proteins, contributing a whopping 9Kcal per gram of fat.

The human blood carries two types of cholesterol: LDL and HDL. Out of these, HDL is the good cholesterol while excessive LDL is bad for our health. LDL deposits in the blood vessels and important organs like heart and eventually blocks arteries, leading to atherosclerosis. Too much consumption of unhealthy fats like saturated and trans fats can raise the bad cholesterol of our body, exposing the risk to heart diseases and stroke.

Saturated fats are obtained from animal sources such as meat and dairy products and plant sources like coconut and palm oil. Artificial trans fats are formed due to partial hydrogenation of unsaturated fats. These are hydrogenated for easy storage, longer shelf life and to prevent rancidity. Trans fats formed naturally by animals and other sources aren’t considered quite harmful, but artificially made ones have serious health consequences. Saturated fats are found in high amount in products like cakes, biscuits and cookies, toffees, fatty meat and animal derives fats. Trans fats are high in products like frozen pizza, shortenings, bakery products like pies and cakes, fried foods like fries and doughnuts. These food items are quite a delicacy, but they are loaded with unhealthy fats which can be detrimental to our health.

Firstly, we can moderate the consumption of this calorie dense macronutrient and secondly, we can choose to eat healthy fats instead. One such fat, ghee is considered as a sattvic food and is recommended by health experts albeit its saturated fat content. Ghee helps in enhancing the good cholesterol content of the body. Ghee made from the milk of grass-fed cows is naturally rich in vitamin A, E and K.  Research shows that ghee is beneficial to reduce chances of ulcers and cancers of the gut. Ghee is rich in butyric acid which is involved in the production of T-cells which help with body immunity. Butyric acid is an anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer constituent too. Ghee is essential for balancing hormones related to thyroid dysfunction. It aids in weight loss by lifting up the body’s metabolism. Similarly, rice bran oil and olive oil are healthy oils too. Rice bran oil is rich in vitamin E, oryzanol, plant sterols and is packed with healthy unsaturated heart healthy fats rather than saturated ones. Olive oil, a staple component of the Mediterranean diet, considered as the healthiest, most balanced and nutritious diet in the world is high in monounsaturated fats, the good fats which help in curing ailments of liver, cancer, heart and reduce the oxidative stress in body by scavenging free radicals through antioxidants present in it. Omega-3 and omega-6 fats when consumed in proportionate amounts are also a good source of healthy fats.

Consuming fats is necessary to carry various metabolic functions of the body, but it is our choice which makes the big difference. Healthy fats go a long way in protective and healthy body functions, while unhealthy fats are empty calories and gradually deteriorate our health and body. So, it is upto us to make choices which promote a healthy body and longevity, adding to quality of life.

Tough Time Getting An Internship

This is one from my personal experience. I have completed my Bachelor’s in Business Administration from St.Joseph’s College of Commerce, Bangalore. I have been having a tough time finding internships or jobs from which I can earn something decent. I am glad that I at-least got a platform to express this. Thank you so much Eduindex News and WordPress. I have been interning here and writing articles for gaining internship experience for the past one month. I have applied to a lot of places in Bangalore. The fields where I have applied are Marketing, Content Writing. I have a lot of interest in content writing. I would love to earn money by writing small contents or small blogs.

What I want to express through this article is simple. I just want everyone who is of my age 21, to know, that whatever opportunity you get to intern, I say intern, not whether you earn money or not, but to intern, then grab it like it is a jackpot. It will add up to your experience, it will add up to your struggle which you have been facing finding an internship. I have been very grateful to this platform where I wrote articles, gained internship from Hariyali via Internshala. It is not about earning always, it is all about gaining experience and facing struggles. Today, I do not have any internship or any job, and I am constantly applying to everywhere for earning atleast something. Life is a lot more difficult out there and only now, I realize what my parents had struggled during their time that today, they have succesful businesses. Internships and jobs require a lot of skills which we lack. I also would love to give you one suggestion. There are a lot of free certificate courses on stock markets, digital marketing, from many many websites. Start applying and learning through them. It is a great experience which none of the colleges will ever teach you. It will also add up to the resumes when you make them for applying to new jobs.

Internships have a very important role to play in our life. No matter how big or small an internship is, it will surely give us some experience about what the outer life is, how difficult it is to earn even small amounts. I feel it is a responsibility of every person who is of my age, 21, and who is either finishing their under graduation, to keep searching for good online courses and for good internships where your interests lie. Good online courses add up to your resumes, and so does good internships. It will give you the extra added advantage over others to fetch a good job when you apply for it. If college is able to provide you with good internships, it is one of the best ways to get one, I had applied to various companies from college, but due to low marks, or don’t know which criteria, could not fetch a good job or internship. But, from my own experience, I would like to say to you that no matter how big or small internship or job we get, whether in college or through acquintance or from anywhere we apply, just grab it, do not miss it and grab it to gain experience, it might give you wonders in the future.

GOODNESS OF WHOLE GRAINS

Ever since stable human civilizations have emerged and developed, people have been consuming food grains on a daily basis as staple food. The harvest and post-harvest processing methods of these grains have evolved over centuries. People’s eating habits have also transformed drastically through the ages. We have learnt to make use of the required specific parts of grains and discard the unwanted parts. Refining is such a process which has developed with time. In this process, the grains are milled with the help of roller grinders, where the grains are cracked and their endosperm separates from their bran and germ. Endosperm is the starchy carbohydrate part of grain with a tiny amount of vitamins and minerals. We prefer on eating refined grains because they are less fibrous and easier to chew and digest. The most commonly refined flour is wheat. Most of the delicious bakery cereal food products are made from refined wheat flour or maida. As maida does not contain germ and bran, it is devoid of good fiber and nutrients that whole wheat is enriched with. We use refined wheat flour in a variety of our dishes. Delicacies like bread, buns, noodles, cakes, biscuits have refined flour as their major ingredient. As refined grains skip important nutrients, all we consume at the end is starch and carbs. Fortification methods have been used to make up for the lost nutrients, but some elements of natural grain like phytochemicals can neither be economically recovered nor can be added to refined grains.

As opposed to this, whole grains contain three layers, namely bran, germ as well as endosperm. Bran is the fibre-filled outer layer of grain with vitamin B, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals. The innermost germ layer is the nutrient packed core with vitamins B and E, phytochemicals and healthy fats. As whole grains have good fibre content, they take longer time to pass through the intestine and help in longer digestion time. This ensures proper absorption of important micronutrients along with major nutrients in blood. It also keeps the stomach full for a longer time, resulting in a feeling of satiety and avoidance of overeating and consequent weight gain. Bran and fibre are slowly digested in the colon as compared to simple sugars like glucose. Thus the blood sugar level rises gradually and in a controlled manner instead a of sharp, drastic rise.

Research shows that consumption of whole grains is linked to a less likely possibility of death due to inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases as also cancer. Replacement of refined grains with fibrous whole grains with a lower glycemic index is beneficial in the reduction of type-2 diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. The fibre in whole grains makes the stool soft and bulky with better absorption and retention of water, helping in prevention of constipation.

In the beginning, it may seem difficult to switch to whole grain products instead of their refined counterparts, but changing to these products will prove beneficial in the long run. Efforts are also being made to improve the sensory appeal of whole grain products. Fitness freaks and diet conscious people are wilfully changing their unhealthy fooding habits by choosing whole grain substitutes of products like brown bread, multigrain flour, whole wheat noodles and pasta, brown rice, whole grain breakfast cereals. All in all, we can say that a healthy diet paves way for a healthy body and modifying the items on our plate to healthier options heavily weighs in to promote fitness and longevity of a healthy life.

TOO SWEET OR SALTY, IT’S FAULTY!

Our daily diet and food have changed drastically from what our ancestors used to consume. Modern technology and innovation in the kitchen have led to the production of a plethora of dishes and recipes. It has become quite easy to order a flamboyant, sumptuous restaurant meal to treat our food cravings with the click of a button. But as grand and presentable as these dishes are, have we checked for its wholesomeness? Do we realize to see if it is nutritious enough? All that considered, our consumption of sugar and related products and salt has gone way up than their required daily value. Eating packaged foods or restaurant preparations regularly has led to over-consumption of sugar and salt, leading to adverse health effects on our health. No wonder the numbers of people with non-congenital diabetes and high blood pressure issues have been increasing at a high rate in the past few years.

Sugar is an empty calorie food, which means eating sugar gives us no nutritional benefit. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons or 24 grams of sugar everyday. Processed and prepared foods as well as sweetened beverage drinks contain high amounts of added sugars and other artificial sweeteners. This carb-intense ingredient when consumed too much invites a large number of ailments and chronic diseases like obesity and heart related diseases.  Manufacturers of packaged foods are required to mandatorily mention the amount of added sugars on their food labels, but poor consumer awareness regarding checking these labels for direct amount of added sugars has led to them putting substitute ingredients, which in the end are equivalents of the same sugar with similar nutritional properties. Sweets and savouries, extruded cereal products, commercial chocolates, nutritional health drink mixes, processed juices, milkshakes and soft drinks are products with high sugar content.

Almost any food is incomplete and bland without the addition of salt. Salt is an important component of food, providing essential nutrients like sodium necessary for maintaining osmotic balance in and out of the cells and functional in nerve impulse conduction. Salt is also important as a fortification vehicle for iodine, iron and other minerals required by our body. But over the years, the consumption of salt has reached far beyond daily consumption values. Recent reports indicate that the consumption of salt is around 9-12 gm daily, about twice the recommended daily value. Due to rapid urbanization and changing lifestyles, people are inclined towards eating highly processed foods containing a large amount of salt, sugar, fat and are calorie dense too. A major reason for this is affordable and hassle-free availability of packaged foods. Consuming too much salt is detrimental to body health, leading to hypertension, heart related ailments and calcium losses from the bone. Too much salt in circulating body fluids can alter (reduce) the water content of the cells, leading to confusion, death or seizures. Pickles, papads, bakery products, chips, pizza, burgers and fries contain excessive amount of salt.

The best way to reduce sugar and salt content in food is by including fruits and vegetables in the diet and cutting out processed food products. This will also help in better intake of potassium which reduces blood pressure, and maintain the ion balance in the body. We can consciously choose foods which keep our daily sugar and salt intake within the daily value limits and lead a healthier life with healthier choices.

HOW TO KNOW WHETHER YOU HAVE AN EATING DISORDER?

BY: VAIBHAVI MENON

“Eat good, feel good.” Food is an essential part of our survival and it can bring us both pleasure and harm. From the womb to the tomb, food is what gives us the nutrients and satisfaction we deserve. Yet food can have some fatal effects which varies from person to person. An eating disorder is a serious mental illness, characterized by eating, exercise and body weight or shape becoming an unhealthy preoccupation of someone’s life. Often people don’t even realize they could be suffering from a eating disorder and this where it becomes a issue.

Symptoms of an eating disorder vary from person to person because they could be suffering from different disorders. Some examples of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. we can identify symptoms based on In general, behaviors and attitudes that indicate that weight loss, dieting, and control of food are becoming primary concerns Preoccupation with weight, food, calories, carbohydrates, fat grams, and dieting, Refusal to eat certain foods, progressing to restrictions against whole categories of food (e.g., no carbohydrates, etc.), Appears uncomfortable eating around others, Food rituals (e.g. eats only a particular food or food group [e.g. condiments], excessive chewing, doesn’t allow foods to touch), Skipping meals or taking small portions of food at regular meals, Any new practices with food or fad diets, including cutting out entire food groups (no sugar, no carbs, no dairy, vegetarianism/veganism), Withdrawal from usual friends and activities, Frequent dieting, Extreme concern with body size and shape,  Frequent checking in the mirror for perceived flaws in appearance and Extreme mood swings. Some physical symptoms could be Noticeable fluctuations in weight, both up and down, Stomach cramps, other non-specific gastrointestinal complaints (constipation, acid reflux, etc.), Menstrual irregularities — missing periods or only having a period while on hormonal contraceptives (this is not considered a “true” period), Difficulties concentrating, Abnormal laboratory findings (anemia, low thyroid and hormone levels, low potassium, low white and red blood cell counts), Dizziness, especially upon standing, Fainting/syncope, Feeling cold all the time, Sleep problems, Cuts and calluses across the top of finger joints (a result of inducing vomiting), Dental problems, such as enamel erosion, cavities, and tooth sensitivity, Dry skin and hair, and brittle nails, Swelling around area of salivary glands, Fine hair on body (lanugo), Cavities, or discoloration of teeth, from vomiting, Muscle weakness, Yellow skin (in context of eating large amounts of carrots), Cold, mottled hands and feet or swelling of feet, Poor wound healing, Impaired immune functioning Inspite of these signs most tend to ignore it as they are so obsessed with changing themselves that they dont notice the damage they are doing to their body. Therefore these insecurities can have really fatal effects on us without our knowledge. Usually the need to change their body comes through different sources such as family media and other institutions.

It’s important to know that you should know when you have reached your limit and not overwork yourself. if you see signs of an eating disorder its important to visit a doctor or talk to your loved ones for them to help you because in the end of all this your happiness is the priority.

Unemployement

Unemployment, according to the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), is persons above a specified age (usually 15)not being in paid employment or self-employment but currently available for work during the reference period.

Unemployment rate, 2017
Unemployment is measured by the unemployment rate, which is the number of people who are unemployed as a percentage of the labour force (the total number of people employed added to those unemployed).

Unemployment can have many sources, such as the following:

new technologies and inventions
the status of the economy, which can be influenced by a recession
competition caused by globalization and international trade
policies of the government
regulation and market
Unemployment and the status of the economy can be influenced by a country through, for example, fiscal policy. Furthermore, the monetary authority of a country, such as the central bank, can influence the availability and cost for money through its monetary policy.

In addition to theories of unemployment, a few categorisations of unemployment are used for more precisely modelling the effects of unemployment within the economic system. Some of the main types of unemployment include structural unemployment, frictional unemployment, cyclical unemployment, involuntary unemployment and classical unemployment. Structural unemployment focuses on foundational problems in the economy and inefficiencies inherent in labor markets, including a mismatch between the supply and demand of laborers with necessary skill sets. Structural arguments emphasize causes and solutions related to disruptive technologies and globalization. Discussions of frictional unemployment focus on voluntary decisions to work based on individuals’ valuation of their own work and how that compares to current wage rates added to the time and effort required to find a job. Causes and solutions for frictional unemployment often address job entry threshold and wage rates.

According to the UN’s International Labour Organization (ILO), there were 172 million people worldwide (or 5% of the reported global workforce) without work in 2018.

Because of the difficulty in measuring the unemployment rate by, for example, using surveys (as in the United States) or through registered unemployed citizens (as in some European countries), statistical figures such as the employment-to-population ratio might be more suitable for evaluating the status of the workforce and the economy if they were based on people who are registered, for example, as taxpayers.

PRO-CHOICE OR PRO-LIFE

BY: VAIBHAVI MENON

“No woman can call herself free who does not control her own body.” Abortion is the medical termination of a foetus and I believe it should be allowed because it was made for a reason. The doctors wouldn’t create abortion if they didn’t think it was right. Abortion should be the woman’s choice and not according to society because it’s the woman who has to carry the baby, take care of the baby and worry about its future. It is the woman’s body which is going through the changes. The mother could be financially unstable and not be able to provide for the baby so in such cases it’s better to abort the baby at the initial stage rather than make it suffer for the rest of its life. Yes the mother can have the baby and put it up for abortion but pregnancy completely changes a woman’s body and for some women it can be fatal and can cause infertility but lets imagine the baby is put up for adoption what is the guarantee that the baby gets into a family and even if we assume the baby has gotten into the family what is the guarantee that the family is good and not abusive.

in the case of a child with a severe disability like Progeria (child ages ) or butterfly skin their life expectancy is only a couple of years and even in that little life they suffer so much cuz of disease. In this case its better to abort especially people who are not financially stable they wont even be able to afford medicines for the diseases. Victims of sexual assault who become pregnant should be able to abort because they dint want this child. The incident that happened to them is already traumatic for them and the child is a constant reminder of what happened to them. there have been cases around the world where a mother who wasn’t ready to have a child has postpartum depression and has committed suicide or takes drugs or kills her own child. Aborting the child inside the womb does not cause pain to the child but killing outside definitely will.

That being said abortion should not be used negatively like for example female infanticide.. it should be used in the case of important situations. Honestly a person who wants to abort a child is going to do so whether legal or not….only difference is that if its allowed they will do it with professional help and if not allowed they will do it on their own by taking pills or through consumption of alcohol etc. in the end its only the woman’s choice as she’s the one who deals with the upbringing of the child and has to see whether she is ready to accept the changes that would happen to her both physically and mentally.therefore I would like to conclude this by saying abortion is not a evil thing to do as many people consider it to be. Infact it saves the unborn child from the fatalities he/she may experience due to the unwilling birth of it.

Voting rights

Suffrage, political franchise, or simply franchise is the right to vote in public, political elections (although the term is sometimes used for any right to vote). In some languages, and occasionally in English, the right to vote is called active suffrage, as distinct from passive suffrage, which is the right to stand for election.

Suffrage universel dédié à Ledru-Rollin, Frédéric Sorrieu, 1850
Suffrage is often conceived in terms of elections for representatives. However, suffrage applies equally to referendums.

In most democracies, eligible voters can vote in elections of representatives. Voting on issues by referendum may also be available. For example, in Switzerland this is permitted at all levels of government. In the United States, some states such as California, Washington, and Wisconsin have exercised their shared sovereignty to offer citizens the opportunity to write, propose, and vote on referendums; other states and the federal government have not. Referendums in the United Kingdom are rare.

Suffrage is granted to qualifying citizens once they have reached the voting age. What constitutes a qualifying citizen depends on the government’s decision. Resident non-citizens can vote in some countries, which may be restricted to citizens of closely linked countries (e.g., Commonwealth citizens and European Union citizens) or to certain offices or questions.

DO PERFECT PEOPLE EXIST?

BY: VAIBHAVI MENON

“Learn to love your insecurities.” A common definition of a perfect person is someone who looks good, has good economic stability and looks happy. Every person has a mental image of what a perfect life, face, body looks like and this varies from person to person. While one would want to look skinny the other would want to be curvy. therefore everyone’s idea of a perfect person is different. This leads to insecurities. The need of looking in some manner and being content in only that way. Often when we see celebrities posting on their social media accounts insecurities tend to build up because of how “perfect” they look but in reality, most don’t look like what they portray to be which isn’t a bad thing but the people viewing it take it in a negative manner and end up wanting to change themselves as well.

these pictures take hours to photoshop to make it look presentable and picture perfect but nobody ever wakes up looking amazing. We all have our bed head, flaky skin, eye bags which is a normal part of our body and it should be appreciated. People need to learn to love these insecurities and that’s when they get a glowup mentally and understand that a perfect person is someone who loves themselves for who they are rather than wanting to be a alternative version which in the end could bring them down. It’s not a easy thing to do but one step a day can make a huge difference. Some ways which could help you grow up mentally would be to observe your surroundings and the people you surround yourselves with because they play a huge role in this and if you ever need a change, do not hesitate to give it up because in the end it’s your happiness that actually matters. An example for this could be Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty. She doesn’t have a perfect body(according to present beauty standards) yet she considered the goddess of beauty. that shows that our physical appearance has nothing to do with how perfect we are, its our mentality that actually defines who we are as a person. There should be no definition given to perfect because in the end we all are very different from each other (except identical twins). A perfect man is a dead man. If you’re alive you’ll have to constantly learn and adapt. Make mistakes , stumble , fall and get up . There’s no such thing as perfect . That’s not life , that’s momentary . You can achieve perfection for moments or in your work but there are so many factors when it comes to humans which are out of our control. It is like swimming , you get better as much you practice . When water flows in river it is fresh , when it stops it gets infected . Our body is composed of so many cells and organs which function as per their natural mechanisms . When we can’t even control our organs how could we be perfect ? Striving for perfection is a great quest though but the universe is motion , when one becomes static , it’s death .

I would like to conclude this by saying you are loved and insecurities are unique parts of yourself that is supposed to appreciated and loved rather than looked down upon

Age discrimination

What is age discrimination?
This is when you are treated differently because of your age in one of the situations that are covered by the Equality Act.

The Equality Act has some exceptions. For example, students are not protected from age discrimination at school.

The treatment could be a one-off action or as a result of a rule or policy based on age. It doesn’t have to be intentional to be unlawful.

There are some circumstances when being treated differently due to age is lawful, explained below.

What the Equality Act says about age discrimination
The Equality Act 2010 says that you must not be discriminated against because:

you are (or are not) a certain age or in a certain age group
someone thinks you are (or are not) a specific age or age group, this is known as discrimination by perception
you are connected to someone of a specific age or age group, this is known as discrimination by association
Age groups can be quite wide (for example, ‘people under 50’ or ‘under 18s’). They can also be quite specific (for example, ‘people in their mid-40s’). Terms such as ‘young person’ and ‘youthful’ or ‘elderly’ and ‘pensioner’ can also indicate an age group.

Different types of age discrimination
There are four main types of age discrimination.

Direct discrimination
This happens when someone treats you worse than another person in a similar situation because of your age. For example:

your employer refuses to allow you to do a training course because she thinks you are ‘too old’, but allows younger colleagues to do the training.
Direct age discrimination is permitted provided that the organisation or employer can show that there is a good reason for the discrimination.

This is known as objective justification. For example:

you are 17 and apply for a job on a construction site. The building company refuses to employ under-18s on that site because accident statistics show that it can be dangerous for them. The company’s treatment of you is probably justified
a guest house owner charges twice her normal rates for people under 21. She hopes it will deter young people from booking because a few have caused damage recently. A more appropriate alternative would be to ask for a deposit. It is unlikely that the guest house can justify charging the increased rates
Indirect discrimination
Indirect discrimination happens when an organisation has a particular policy or way of working that applies to everyone but which puts people of your age group at a disadvantage. For example:

you are 22 and you find you are not eligible to be promoted because your employer has a policy that only workers with a post graduate qualification (such as a Masters) can be promoted. Although this applies to everyone it disadvantages people of your age because they are less likely to have that qualification
an optician allows customers to pay for their glasses by instalments, provided they are in employment. This could indirectly discriminate against older people, who are less likely to be working
Like direct age discrimination, indirect age discrimination can be permitted if the organisation or employer is able to show that there is a good reason for the policy. This is known as objective justification.

Harassment
Harassment occurs when someone makes you feel humiliated, offended or degraded. For example:

during a training session at work, the trainer keeps commenting how slow an older employee is at learning how to use a new software package because of his age. The employee finds this distressing. This could be considered harassment related to age
Harassment can never be justified. However, if an organisation or employer can show it did everything it could to prevent people who work for it from behaving like that, you will not be able to make a claim for harassment against it, although you could make a claim against the harasser.

Victimisation
This is when you are treated badly because you have made a complaint of age discrimination under the Equality Act. It can also occur if you are supporting someone who has made a complaint of age discrimination. For example:

your colleague complains of being called a ‘wrinkly’ at work. You help them complain to your manager. Your manager treats you badly as a result of getting involved
