Star Wars I Explained

Most people who read these words immediately thing of people wielding light swords and fighting but star wars is much more complex. The movie order confuses a lot of people so lets just get the order straight, its just a numerical order that goes from 1 to 9. The story is divided basically into 3 different trilogies I-III, IV-VI and VII-IX we’ll be talking about I the phantom menace this time. I-III were released after IV-VI but stand at the beginning of the timeline. Star wars I-III kicks off a beautiful saga set in a galaxy far far away which is home to not just humans but a multitude of races. Some people in this world can harness an ability known as The Force and are known as being Force sensitive.

The Force is a mystery that few understand, member of one such groups are known as Jedi tasked with protecting the galaxy. The Jedi are primarily peacekeepers that use their abilities to help people in need. The galaxy is in turmoil with the trade federation that wishes to conquer planets using its droid armies. The Jedi Order dispatches Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jin and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi to convince the federation to not invade the planet Naboo. The negotiations fail and the secret benefactor of the trade federation, Darth Sidious orders the invasion to proceed as planned. The two Jedi fight back and escape with Padme Amidala the Queen of Naboo but in the escape their ship is damaged and they’re forced to stop on the desert planet of Tatooine for repairs.

On Tatooine Qui-Gon comes across a young force sensitive slave Anakin Skywalker, after freeing the young boy from his slavery Qui-Gon decides to train him in the way of the Force. On the way back to their ship Qui-Gon comes face to face with Darth Maul a Sith lord and after a short duel escapes. Sith are the opposite of the Jedi they use their connection with the Force for their own gain unlike the Jedi, Sith were believed to be extinct by the elder Jedi after long periods of inactivity. The Jedi travel to Coruscant so that Padme could plead her case to the galactic senate. Qui-Gon asks the Jedi council permission to train the young Skywalker but his requests are denied. Padme is convinced by senator Sheev Palpatine to call for a vote of no confidence in the current leader. Meanwhile Padme decides to lead a rebellion to save Naboo with the help of Gungans a race of amphibious creatures that live underwater on Naboo.

The Gungans agree to help out and lead the fight against the droid army on the ground and Padme with the two Jedi decides to search for the viceroy that leads the invasion, meanwhile Pilots attack the federations droid control ship to weaken the droids. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan come face to face with Darth Maul again and fight him together, Maul however overpowers Qui-Gon and mortally wounds him. Obi-Wan avenges his master by defeating Maul, a dying Qui-Gon asks Obi-Wan to train Anakin as his apprentice. After the battle the viceroy is arrested and Palpatine replaces him as the chancellor, Grand Master Yoda promotes Obi-Wan to the rank of a Jedi Knight and accepts Anakin as Obi-Wan’s apprentice to respect Qui-Gon’s wishes.

The Sith have a rule known as the rule of 2 wherein only one Sith lord and one apprentice is allowed to exist. According to this logic, with Maul dead one Sith still remains. The Jedi order has to prepare themselves against the oncoming war against the Sith.

We shall pick up the next story soon so stay tuned until then, May the Force be with you.

Disney’s take on gender representation

Gender Representation in Disney Movies

Abstract :
In the Disney world, we can see that gender role-play a very prominent role. It is something people look forward to and observe while watching a movie and depicting certain characters in certain ways could change the way men and women are expected to be like and it sets a standard of how their role should look like. Very frequently, many female characters are portrayed as weak, and always in need of a man to save them. For instance, Cinderella, snow white, etc. There are only a handful number of movies where the female takes it upon herself to not give in to societal norms and standards.

Introduction:
The main focus of this article is to throw light on the representation of female characters in gynocentric Disney movies. Disney was originally founded on October 16, 1923. It was finally renamed The Walt Disney Company in 1986.
Disney has given a lot of people all over the world comfort through their unparallel storytelling, extraordinary productions, and unbeatable attention to detail. Even with all the amazing storylines, it’s mostly gynocentric and male-oriented. Their portrayal of women is very outdated and affects the perception of women in the real world. This research is important as it helps us realize why the way men and women are portrayed in a particular manner can be harmful and deceiving, as in the movies men are shown to be powerful, strong, level headed and manly while the female characters are shown to be weak, always in need of help, in need of a male character to help them be liberal and achieve happiness. This can send the wrong message to people who are trying to accept themselves as they are and not care about how others wish them to be. In modern times like this, media or visual entities hold a lot of power and therefore it is important for the messages to be conveyed in the right manner and make sure that it doesn’t change the progress of the real world. If men and women are given equally important roles and represented with equality, it would spread a positive message and the receiver would also have a positive outlook of the world.

Data Analysis, Result, and Discussion:
The first movie is Tarzan release in 2003 was an orphaned his parents were killed by the cheetahs when he was a baby. He was adopted by a gorilla and Kala and spent his early years trying to imitate them. The entire movie displayed him as a masculine, strong, fierce hunter, worrier, and independent. When the ape Kerchak attacks and tried to kill him, he wins the fight the takes Kerchak’s place as the king of the ape. On the other hand, Jane has been portrayed as weak, emotional, and fragile. Jane and her father research Gorilla, so she came to the jungle with Clayton to get more information about them. At first, Jane has shown bravery and courage trying to stop Clayton from killing the gorillas. Clayton was using the trip so that he can kill the gorillas and sell them. But once she meets Tarzan and falls in love with him, she completely relies on him and the others to save her from every difficult situation she faced. While the baboons chased her Tarzan save her. When the pirate guy tries to hit her again Tarzan saves her. When they are imprisoned on the boat instead of trying to find how to escape, she just stays there and waits for Tarzan. In the movie, Jane always follows Tarzan wherever he goes. The way how Jane was portrayed in the movie is common to many other female characters, it says something not about them as an individual but how the society view women and their place and expectations.

The second movie is Cinderella release in 2007 is a classic fairy story, a rags-to-riches tale about a kind-hearted girl who suffers various hardships only to marry the prince of the kingdom. In Cinderella, men are portrayed as the upper gender, because of the sociological position of women at that time when they were considered inferior and of an inferior class and wealth. Cinderella’s father played no important role in Cinderella’s life. Most of the time, she was controlled by her evil mother-in-law. Cinderella was seen as happy and she looks like she is enjoyed doing household chores she still dreams of her happiness ever after. Cinderella is a typical image of a distressed lady because the only one who can save her from her miserable life was the prince. Cinderella will be stuck in her miserable life forever if the prince won’t save her. This shows the status of women at the time who idealized marriage and the role of being at home to taking care of babies and care for the husband. In addition, by showing the differences the step-sisters had with Cinderella, children can think that step-sisters share a nasty relationship, which isn’t the case on many occasions. It is important to not label or relate certain achievements or actions to a person’s gender because that’s not always the case.

The third movie with a strong female character is Frozen which was released in 2013. This movie talks about women’s power and how there is strength in unity and beauty in accepting oneself as they are. The movie starts with two sisters, Elsa and Anna where Elsa was born with magical powers to create ice but she unintentionally hurts Anna and is no longer confident about her powers, and their parents decide that it’s best to hide her powers. Due to this, the two sisters grow apart and there’s a distance between them but one day during Elsa’s coronation, Anna meets Prince Hans of Isle. They fall in love but Elsa doesn’t approve of them and accidentally shows her powers to the world and that’s where Anna realizes how difficult it must’ve been for Elsa. Elsa escapes and Anna follows her where she meets Christoph, a very ordinary man who works in the business of collecting ice. They both leave to find Elsa and convince her to go back but to no avail. Elsa realizes that the mountains are where she belongs as she cannot hurt anyone and can freely do magic. Elsa strikes Anna’s heart which can only be healed by “an act of true love”, so she travels back to Arendelle to Hans but quickly realizes that it was all an act and he was only after her wealth. In the meantime, Hans captures Elsa to put an end to her but she successfully escapes. Hans finds her and is about to strike her when Anna throws herself to save her sister’s life and Elsa is in disbelief and starts weeping and that’s when Anna comes back to life as the “act of true love” mentioned above was sisterly love. This movie has a strong message that women need to stick together and how there is power in being one.

The fourth movie chosen is Moana released in 2016. This movie is about a girl who is supposed to be leading an island but shows very little interest in that particular topic but she finds water to be very fascinating and is drawn to it from the very beginning but isn’t allowed to be anywhere near water as it’s considered to be dangerous or unknown. Moana tries her best to make sure she fulfills her duty as someone who should lead but is unable to do so and therefore begins her journey with water. In the movie, we can see how her grandmother always encouraged Moana to find her true calling and follow her dreams and find happiness in whatever she does. The movie starts with her grandmother reading an ancient tale to the children of the island which nobody considers to be true but her grandmother is sure that it’s not all a lie. Maui is a demigod who runs away with the stone or nature’s heart which starts to corrupt the world and destroy it. Moana is the only one why can put things back to place as she is the chosen one and is supposed to deliver the stone with Maui beyond the reef. She goes on an adventure to save the world and finds Maui and even though she faces a lot of hardship in her path, she still makes sure to deliver the stone as the fate of her island and the world depended on her. During the journal, she realizes that her ancestors were voyagers and the island residents started voyaging again once the issue was solved as they deeply believed in Moana. This entire movie has proved that women need to take matters into their own hands and face obstacles head-on and have faith in themselves. They should be able to freely follow their gut feeling and be able to do whatever they want to without needing anyone’s permission or approval.

Conclusion:
This article aimed to view the gender representation of female characters in gynocentric Disney movies. It analyzes four different Disney movies. Earlier the female characters are given a minor role and did not hold any importance in the movies. Even in this age and time, Disney shows how women need men to achieve happiness and freedom. Movies like Mulan and Moana need to be advocated more so women can find their happiness in their way and they don’t need a man to fulfill their interests. However, as gender roles have changed, the female characters in Disney animations have also changed with gaining more importance in their roles.

Has OTT platforms changed the dynamics of the Indian cinema

What is an OTT platform

OTT stands for over the top media , which offers media services to the viewers directly through the internet by passing the cables, broadcast, sattellite television platforms and the distributors or controllers of the entertainment content.

Cinema is basically the art or technique of making motion pictures of bringing the stories made by the creative minds to life with the help of the camera. it is immensely popular in India with over 1800 films releasing in many Indian languages per year with Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Kochi, Bhubaneshwar-Cuttack and Guwahati being the main centers of the film production. Cinema in India not only serves a purpose of being a platform for showcasing art and providing entertainment to the masses but also it is an emotion. Whenever there has to be a celebration in the Indian households people do it by going to the theatres enjoying their time out relishing the feel of the reel stories with their favorite beverages in their hands. When we are happy or sad we watch movies, the choice of the films we watch represents our mood.

Indian Cinema over the years

Over the years, the cinema has transformed from giving classic deliveries over the daily situations of the lives, to the typical action packed romance films where a poor boy goes against all the odds to marry her rich girl or vice versa to the films depicting the importance of family to the films depicting social issues which are lesser known and require our immediate attention to the real life inspirations. Over the past half century and more there has been a rapid change in the dynamics of what film industry used to be and people’s perception about it.

We see ourselves in the character and derive joy from it and maybe learn things also from them . The vilian on the screen automatically was our definition of a bad guy. The iconic DDLJ’s “Tujhko dekha hai toh jana sanam “ song which was shot in the mustard feel continues to rein people’s heart over almost every generation even today 25 years after its release. This is what is about the movies, it takes us for a moment away from this hectic world.

The contribution of OTT platforms

With the covid-19 pandemic engulfing the world in its dreadness, everyone is locked in their homes with the theatres which since many decades have played home to hosting the movies on the big screen being closed. Though nothing comes close to the feeling of watching a story which sometimes consists of your dreams, unfold on the big screen, OTT platforms are what which came to our rescue in these times.

While the OTT platforms like Amazon Prime video, Netflix, zee5 are there since years now , but its the pandemic which had made people watch these. With the introduction of OTT came web series, a mid version of serials and movies. While a movie has to wrap up in 3 hours maximum and a tv serial goes on till infinity , web series are slightly longer than the 3 hour duration and are finite with the content i.e. there is no pressure to extend the content till infinity for the sake of TRPs. The content which includes these web series are the one which is too long to be caged within the 3 hours of the movie. And this has led to some serious changes in what Indian cinema is now.

Gone is the time of showcasing a damsel in distress who needs her Knight in shinning armor to save her, it is the time of equality and this is what the majority of content on OTT serves today. Not just the web series but the films which are releasing on these OTT platforms now showcase the need for change in today’s time. With people idolising the cinema and its actors, it is very helpful if those actors help drive an important message home.

Also, it has given an opportunity for the actors to showcase their skills and the ones who were once underrated are a household name now. Moreover, the OTT platforms are available at the lower rates with a subscription for an entire year in many Indian languages, it is just like the theatres shifting to the comfort of your homes with more valuable content . This helps people in watching end number of series and films over that platform in the amount of money that they would have spent on just one movie in the theatres. The reason for this cost reduction be the removal of distributors and many others who played an important role in the release of a film.

REALITY SHOWS

Reality shows have now become the latest end. Their initial popularity with the masses, helped in the number of such shows produced today. Reality shows take the form of various competitions and challenges where celebrities or the common man participate. There is or essentially no script involved and the interest of the show lies inherently in the personality of the audiences and the tasks. Many of these competitions are judged by eminent personalities within the field. There was a need for a change in the television industry from the onslaught of the various soaps that were telecasted.

However, the question that emerges today is…how real are these reality shows? May critics believe that there isn’t even a modicum of reality in any of these shows. They are often scripted and only aim at high TRP’s. The shows have a planned course and the masses are simply captivated. Though they provide raw drama and an undisputable display of anger, love, guilt and jealousy, these are often tactics used to keep the audiences fastened rather than a genuine display of emotion. There are many others, who are loyal supporters of reality shows and believe that they have indeed provided a platform for the common man to exhibit his talent and gain success. Various dance and singing reality shows as well as quiz shows for children and adults provide them with a means through which provide, they can showcase their talent and intelligence Through these shows they often gain various opportunities to prove their courage. But sadly, one cannot deny that the USP of many of these shows is emotion and melodrama and as a result the purpose of the show is often side-lined. The recent crop of reality shows have come up with themes that tends to belittle important social institutions. In spite of the fact that it has its own pros and cons various channels and producers are misusing the originality of these shows by introducing new themes and shows to keep the masses entertained. Some of the most popular Indian reality shows include ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, ‘Big Boss’ and ‘Indian Idol’. Many movie icons are also willingly accepting the task of anchoring these shows so as to connect with people and exploit the scope of T.V as a medium of maintaining one’s popularity.

However, there is a need to ensure that this genre does not deteriorate like the previous trends. The shows must always be well researched and fresh in its approach rather than look at reality T.V as a formula and launching shows that have little creativity and uniqueness.

Shows of Old – Don’t Tell My Mother

Don’t Tell My Mother was a television program hosted by Diego Bunuel and shown on the television channel Nat Geo but currently available on subscription channel Nat Geo Adventure which is primarily a documentary/travel show.

Thus, Buñuel embarked on a rather unusual effort at the time, to talk about countries that make headlines, but instead of focusing on the same, basic or even the negative stories, he took a look at a more subtle and positive vision of these countries, full of culture, people, interests that rise high above the usual daily news reports.

Locations

The show has traveled all around the globe. In season 1, which started from 2007, the show takes place in countries like Colombia, Afghanistan, Congo, Pakistan, North Korea and the Balkans, where he busts some of the stereotypes plaguing these countries.

In the following seasons which has four in total, the locations include mainly cities like Johannesburg, Delhi, Manila, Tokyo, Lagos, Beirut and countries like Somalia, Kazakhstan, Russia and Thailand. The last episode aired on 20th October 2013, taking place in Ukraine.

HOW TO BRIGHTEN YOUR MOOD

From Sad to Glad!

Everyone has one or two moments during the day when they think about something and their mood instantly changes from good to bad. For a few minutes we process that feeling and could either go two way: you would either ignore the thought and continue with your work or you would dwell on it and make it worse. Literally anything can ruin our mood if we let it. So, if you find yourself in a bad mood more often then you must some of these mood lifting ideas mentioned below:

  • Deep Breathing: It is proven to calm your nerves down and bring your mind into a state of cam. While doing that you will have a little time to reflect on your mood and you might even let go of the negativity.
  • Try taking a Walk: If you find yourself sliding into a bad mood, put on your sneakers and go take a walk. Don’t time it just keep walking and walk until you make peace with your thoughts. Walking is a great source of distraction.
  • Have a Chocolate: Chocolate is a beloved dessert for all age groups. I don’t think we need a reason to have some of that deliciousness. It will 100% put you in a good mood and all you will be focusing on is the how much your soul is enjoying a piece of your chocolate bar.
  • Talk it Out: If your bad mood is because of a friend or a colleague, then the best thing would be to talk it out with someone who is rational. You can either sort out your differences directly with the person or you could take help of another friend to let go of all the bad thoughts.
  • Take a Nap: A nap is the solution to all your problems. During that time you are detached from the outside world and once you are well rested you’ll have a whole new way of processing your mood. So, snuggle up in your bed and let go.
  • Exercise: Exercise is a proven outlet for anger. If you are in a bad mood you must exercise and you will feel that blood pumping through your veins, it could be a great distraction because who doesn’t feel good about themselves after a great sweat session.
  • Cook your Comfort Food: Food is the ultimate mood up lifter. Cooking is therapeutic and even if you don’t know how to cook, once you start cooking you will be distracted and that is a good thing. Also, when you cook for yourself , you are automatically putting yourself in a good mood and in no time you will forget all about those bad feelings that overcame your mind.
  • Retail Therapy: It is said that money cannot buy happiness and that is true but it can buy you a short lived sense of satisfaction which is enough to put away all that negativity. You can either go buy some clothes or you could go grocery shopping too.
  • Do Something Recreational: Someone who is in a bad mood often has a hard time focusing on things that are important. In order to gain that focus back you can do something recreational like draw, sing, write in a journal, read your favorite book or maybe dance it out. You will feel instantly refreshed and you can focus on the important things again.
  • Rearrange your Wardrobe: It is always good to let out the anger and do something productive with it. The most productive thing you could do is rearranging you wardrobe or maybe cleaning the house. A clean and freshly arranged surrounding will definitely uplift your mood.

We all have days when nothing feels good and all we want to do is curl up in bed and sulk about it but in no way is that healthy. We can easily overcome those feelings if we channel them into something we life and in the end you will feel much much better about your day. Some days are definitely better than others but if we try a little harder we can have more good days and lesser bad ones. Just don’t hide your emotions, accept them and do something to make them go away. Soon you will be the happiest person you know and that’s the ultimate goal, right?

Edge of Tomorrow: Second Chances

Anyone who has played video games knows what checkpoints are, but checkpoints are a way to save your progress in a game. Certain games allow saving progress at any point, but some games allow saving progress only at predefined points known as checkpoints. Imagine having this ability in real life; you could revert back to a checkpoint with future knowledge. There is a catch though, to reset, you have to die. The protagonist of this movie finds himself in a similar predicament. Dying sends him back in time, and he is forced to relive his life again.

The movie is set in an alternate 2020 where aliens conquered most of Europe in 2015. Technological advancements lead to the creation of mech suits that give their pilots superhuman strength and reflexes. After success in Germany, the UDF or United Defense Force, a global military organization set up to fight against the aliens, plans on using the mech suits to invade France. The movie turns its focus to the protagonist, Major William Cage, played by Tom Cruise. He finds himself demoted to the rank of private and assigned to the invasion party. Lacking combat experience, he dies but not before killing an unusually large mimic known as an Alpha.

Cage wakes up on the morning when he was demoted to a private and assigned to the invasion party but strangely remembers landing and dying. He tries to warn his commanding officer but to no avail and keeps on being reset after dying and remembers the actions and tries to act accordingly. In one of many such loops, he tries saving Seargent Rita Vrataski, a hero of the attack on Germany against the aliens played by the lovely Emily Blunt. She realizes that Cage can loop back time when he saves her by apparently anticipating every move that could lead to her death. She asks him to find her when he resets again.

When Cage finds Rita and explains what has been happening, having experienced a similar situation, she takes Cage to Dr. Carter, an expert on the Aliens biology. Dr. Carter explains how Cage hijacked the aliens’ ability to loop back time; the ability is a defense mechanism used by the Alien leader “Omega” that reset time to prevent losing. Vratski begins training Cage to use his ability and warns him that a blood transfusion will take away the ability. After many failed loops, Cage learns about the location of the Omega and plans to end the fight once and for all.

After even more failed loops and almost having the ability taken away, Cage and Vrataski decide to track the Omega together. Cage suffers a major injury but is saved by a blood transfusion that inadvertently takes his ability away. Realizing that he has only one attempt at destroying the Omega, he enlists the help of his previous squad. After a grueling fight, Vrataski is killed, and Cage wounded. Cage uses whatever strength he has left to destroy the Omega, drowning in its blood in the process.

Cage wakes up two days earlier and realizes the world is different than he remembers. His effort in killing the Omega helps weaken the aliens and gives humanity the edge required to win.

In conclusion, it is an amazing movie that shows knowing what the future holds can help. The name is apt as Cage literally has the edge over tomorrow, knowing what the future holds for him. A VFX-heavy movie that gives the aliens a menacing look which helps sell the terror and fear. Based on the 2004 Japanese light novel “All you need is Kill” by Hiroshi Sakurazaka checks all the right boxes for a science fiction enthusiast like myself. I heartily recommend the movie to any Science fiction fan or to the fans of Tom Cruise.

Elon Musk buys a ticket on Sir Richard Branson’s space flight – report

Sir Richard confirmed the purchase in an interview.

E

Elon Musk has bought a ticket on one of rival billionaire Sir Richard Branson’s spaceship flights, according to a newspaper report.

As Sir Richard prepares to fly on Virgin Galactic’s first fully crewed flight to the edge of space on Sunday from New Mexico, The Sunday Times says Mr Musk – who owns rival exploration company SpaceX – has paid for a seat on a future Virgin voyage.

Mr Musk paid a 10,000-dollar (£7,000) deposit to reserve a seat. No date for his flight has been specified.

Sir Richard confirmed the purchase in an interview with The Sunday Times, saying he might reciprocate by booking a ticket on a SpaceX flight in the future.

“Elon’s a friend and maybe I’ll travel on one of his ships one day,” he said.

Amid what has been dubbed the billionaires’ space race, SpaceX has launched dozens of rockets, including manned flights, but Mr Musk himself has not yet flown on any. The company is due to launch its first fully private spaceflight in the autumn.

Sir Richard will become the first owner-astronaut to take part in a mission, beating Amazon founder Jeff Bezos who plans to reach space in his own rocket – through his Blue Origin company – in nine days’ time.

Tourists are expected to pay some 250,000 dollars (£180,000) for a spaceflight on Virgin Galactic, which includes four minutes of zero gravity.
