COLD WAR

After the Second World War, the USA and the USSR were the two supreme powers in the world. Hence, both these nations tried to reduce the power of the other indirectly.

The competition between the two nations brought about the Cold War. America was the leader of all the Capitalist countries, and Soviet Russia was the leader of all the communist countries. Hence, both countries continued their rivalry.

Cold War was the state of mounting tension between the USA and Soviet Russia after the Second World War was over for Supremacy in the world as the Super Power. The United States of America became the representative of the capitalist countries, and the Soviet Union Russia became the representative of communism. Hence, there was an ongoing rivalry between the two great powers. Since this rivalry did not result in a war, but only in diplomatic incidents, it is called the Cold War.

Cold War is a term used to describe the tension between two parties but an absence of any quarrels. It is also used to describe the tactics nations use against each other as a diplomatic war.

When Hitler invaded Russia, Roosevelt, the then President of the United States sent supplies for the troops. It could have started the degradation of the relationship between the USA and Russia. When Stalin defeated Germany and wanted to implement communism, he was suspected, and since then, suspicion arose between the western countries and Russia. Hence, Cold Was began.

The United States of America could not accept the communist ideology of Russia. On the other hand, Soviet Russia could not accept the dominance of the USA in other European countries.

After the Second World War, Soviet Russia had manufactured much ammunition and arms. Hence, the USA saw them as a threat and created the atom bomb, hydrogen bomb and other such lethal weapons. Other European countries also participated in the rivalry with Russia, and this divided the world into two halves.

Soviet Russia continued to spread communism is its mass media and wanted to spread it everywhere to encourage their labour revolution. Meanwhile, America helped the capitalists against the communists. The difference in the doctrines led to the intensified Cold War situation.

After the USA bombarded the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Soviet Russia was afraid that they would face similar consequences. Hence, they increased their military and weaponry strength. It also deemed to intensify the Cold War.

When veto was implemented, Soviet Russia used it to reject any statement that the USA made in the UNO council. Hence, the western countries were insulted by it. The incident led to more intensification of the Cold War.

Cold War resulted in the fear and suspicion between Russia and the USA. It created tension between the nations permanently. There were several alliances solely to increase its intensity. Cold War resulted in unnecessary expenditure on military power. It created poverty and decreased the living conditions of people. It is a useless and meaningless war which divided the world in an irreparable way.

Corruption Unlimited

India has the dubious distinction of being one of the top ten corrupt countries of the world. The malaise is too deep and wide to be eradicated so much so that common people have become despondent to the point of apthy. India has become a country of scams, scandals, corruption, graft and gratification.

Bribery, gratification, illegal donations, kickbacks etc are now the order of the day. They have become endemic part and parcel of our life. Go to any department, ministry, office, school, college, police station law court, hospital or any any other place of work you can think of, you will find corruption ubiquitous. Even accident victims are not spared. People involved in train or plane accidents are robbed and plundered in very tragic and helpless conditions even by those who are supposed to be honest, helping and defender of the law and order. Can there be more degrading situation than this? Sometimes it looks as if the situation has reached the point of no return but then the inner conscience says “no” and urges to fight it.

Corruption has been eating into our vitals in spite of moral teachings, exhortations, slogans and learned lectures from the political platforms against the corrupt. No corrupt person has been hanged so far. The mills of law are too slow to grind and punish these political goons. It may take years even to take cognizance of corrupt practices, let alone punishing corrupt persons in top slots. Even our judiciary is not free from the malaise. Many a time a finger has been raised towards people sitting in the judgement.

Corruption percolates from above and gradually reaches all the lower levels of the society and administration. There is collusion and nexus between antisocial elements, mafias, criminals and politicians in power. There is no limit to hawalas, money laundering and a parallel economy exists there with their blessings. The criminals and the culprits are ruling the roost because of their high connections, contacts and money and muscle power. The long arm of corruption reaches everywhere. Neither politics, nor religion, nor elections, nor judiciary is beyond its reach. Dacoits and history sheeters are sitting in the Parliamentary and legislatures. Time has come when the people should wage a relentless war and crusade against corruption and corrupt practices. It is now or never.

The Prime Minister has given a clarion call to end this menace of corruption. Like him, all other honest Indian citizens, officials and workers hang their heads with shame. The Lok Pall Bill should be introduced in the Parliament at the earliest. There should be exemplary punishment for officers, ministers and all others who practice corruption. None should be spared, not even the highest. There should be transparency in decision making and implementation of policies. There should be one window clearance in big and vital contracts and licenses. There should be accountability and responsibility for all the actions and decisions. Right to information should find place among fundamental rights. Nepotism, red tapism, favouritism etc should be dealt with an iron hand. There should be no judicial hesitation, delay and procrastination in meeting out the due punishment to the corrupt. None can be above the law of the law of the land . There can be special courts to try the corrupt in the minimum possible time. The mills of justice should grind fine and fast too. Public should be aroused against the corrupt so that the people in authority do not become law in themselves and hold the country to ransom by their corrupt, selfish and narrow minded practices. This is the only way to have responsive government and clean leadership.

Everything should be shared with the public which will help the people to question the Government which helps to eliminate Corruption.

    Today many people believe that politics is based on corruption. Few politicians are exposed, and the remaining ones have a namesake clean chit. One party might be less corrupt than the other, but all are corrupt to some extend. People have lost their trust in the democratic system, government offices, and institutes.

    IMPACT OF CORRUPTION IN ECONOMY:-

    The prosperity of a nation is at stake due to the prevalence of rampant corruption in the system. The huge pile of non-performing Assets, lack of foreign investments, time, and cost overruns of infrastructure projects are the adverse effects on our progress. It makes us unfriendly and difficult for foreigners to come and invest here. Red tape is also a reason for delayed and stopped projects.

    IMPACT OF RTI ON CORRUPTION:-

    Right to Information (RTI) has had a positive impact on the working of these institutions especially the Public Distribution System and the education sector where the termite of corruption had been pervading. It has helped in removing the opaqueness from these institutions and increasing the accountability of those who manage them. Conclusion of corruption? There is no conclusion of corruption as there is no conclusion of theft, robber, murder, rape, bullying, and many other acts people are doing to others. Corruption, similar in a way to the theft from government or from an “abstract entity” looks different, but is similar. You take something from others for your own good. Corrupt people should be chased, haunted, and punishment in harsher ways to prevent the feeling that exists in some societies that is the way to make money and promote yourself in society. The higher the corruption, the higher the punishment. I know that it is not an easy matter as those people are close to the government and politicians have a lot of money, but this is the only way to live in a healthy society.

    DR. RAJENDRA PRASAD : the first president of Republic India

     Rajendra Prasad (3 December 1884 – 28 February 1963) was an Indian independence activist, lawyer scholar, and subsequently, the first president of India, 

    In Office from 1950 to 1962. he was an Indian political leader and lawyer by training. Prasad joined the Indian national congress during the Indian independence movement and became a major leader from the region of Bihar. A supporter of Mahatma Gandhi, Prasad was imprisoned by British authorities during the salt satyagraha of 1931 and the quit India movement of 1942.

     After the constituent  Assembly 1946 elections, Prasad served as minister of food and agriculture in the central government. Upon independence in 1947, Prasad was elected as president of the Constituent Assembly of India, which prepared the Constitution of India and served as its provisional parliament. 

    when India became a republic in 1950, Prasad was elected its first president by the Constituent Assembly. as a president, prasad established a tradition of non-partisanship and independence for the office-bearer. Although a ceremonial head of state, prasad encouraged the development of education in India and advised the Nehru government on several occasions.

    The Story of Spice King Of India From A Tonga Driver To A Millionaire

    Hi everybody , one of the most iconic business Maharajas of India whose name was Mahashay Dharampal Gulati. This is a story of a man who went from being a tonga driver to building an empire with an operating revenue of 2000 crores. And the reason why his story is even more special is because he built a business during a time when people were struggling hard even to stay alive because back then India was still recovering from the massacres of partition.

     Dharampal Ji was born in the year 1923 in Sialkot, which today, falls in modern-day Pakistan in a Hindu family which had high ideals of honesty and simplicity. And since childhood, he was a carefree kid but with a sheer will to do something extraordinary. 

    Gulati Ji, since childhood, experienced a lot of failures, he first dropped out of school in class 5 and tried doing several jobs where he couldn’t find any fulfilment. 

    Then he tried selling Mehendi (Henna) from street to street. and even that did not work out. Then, his father tried to set up a separate shop for him and his brother and eventually, even that venture failed. So after spending years trying to do different kinds of jobs like selling wood, mirrors he finally decided to settle in and start running his father’s spice shop which at that time was named as Mahashian Di Hatti. 

    But when he was just 25 years old and he began to settle down in his business and his business began to pick up the India-Pakistan partition happened. and within a midnight, the entire nation was in chaos. And because Sialkot became a part of Pakistan soon enough there was such a massive bloodshed that hundreds of innocent people were being killed due to the Hindu-Muslim riots. 

    During that time they somehow managed to board a train that brought them to Amritsar and people, if you have seen the movie ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ you would pretty much have an idea of how terrible the situation of partition was. In fact, the very train that Gulati Ji’s family boarded had the dead bodies of the people who had been killed due to the massacres of partition.

     So, he stayed in the refugee camp of Amritsar for quite some time and then decided to move to Delhi wherein he became a tonga driver. Now people, back then he was already married for 7 years because he got married at the early age of 18. So he had responsibilities on his shoulders to provide good life for his family.

     But then after a few months he understood that tonga driver’s profession was not good enough to provide a good life for his family. And that is when he decided to restart his father’s business and set up a small spice shop in Delhi. And that is when he named his shop Mahashian Di Hatti which today is known by the name MDH

    Now, people, even after partition India was still struggling hard to recover from the massacres of partition. There were millions of people who had lost their everything and India as a country was in a state of poverty wherein 80% of the entire country’s population lived below the poverty level. 

    So, the markets, in general, never focused on quality because if you had to produce quality product during that time it would increase the cost of production, it would decrease your margins of profit and most importantly, because the cost of the product will increase majority of the peope will not be able to afford it eventually, resulting into decrease in sales. 

    So running a viable business during that time by selling quality products was practically impossible. So, the majority of the poducts that were being sold in he market including milk and salt were being completely . 

    For example, milk was being mixed with a lot of water to increase the quantity. And to compensate for the density, even harmful chemicals were used. Similarly, yellow soil was mixed with haldi (turmeric) and sawdust was being mixed with dhaniya (coriander) powder. And just like that, even spices were being adulterated to a large extent because it was practically impossible for a common man to be able to understand the difference between pure spices and adulterated spices.

    But even during that time Gulati Ji poured his blood and sweat and always made sure that his shop always sold pure spices. Because he believed that the primary intent of any business should not be to make money but to do great service. And money should always be a bi-product of great service.

    That is why Gulati Ji worked very hard to monitor every single process of the production of spices just so that he can give a common man of India, a taste of pure spices And people can you imagine how difficult it would have been ? 

    He had to keep the cost low just so that he can match the cost of the adulterated spices. Number two, he had to keep his margins very thin because his cost of production was way higher as compared to adulterated spices. 

    And most importantly he was making very less money, inspite of making the best product in the market. But all throughout these difficult times, this great man worked tirelessly with the hope that he’ll be able to build a brand one day that the mother of a common household can blindly trust upon when she makes a meal for her family. And guess what ? 

    Slowly and steadily, people began to realize the differnce between Gulati Ji’s spices and the adulterated spices and soon enough people started to line up at his shop just to buy his products. And that is how Gulati Ji’s small shop- Mahashian Di Hatti Masale as in, MDH masale, became a popular brand in Delhi. 

    And as his business started growing, he started to recruit his friends and family into his business with the hope that they will be able to stand by his belief of providing excellent quality spices to people. And he also started outsourcing a few processes like powdering turmeric. 

    And yet again, when everything looked well, he faced even tougher challenges and here’s where ordinary people like you and me have something very important lesson to learn. 

    People, Gulati Ji was a person who did every small thing in his shop starting from the raw material transportation to the grinding of spices, he participated in every single activity and that is the reason why he soon enough became an expert in finding out even a little bit of adulteration in his spices.

     So, when he was scaling up he was able to maintain the same excellent quality standards that he used to maintain while he was selling spices from his small shop. And because of his sharpness and diligence he was able to spot certain loopholes in his system which could have completely destroyed his business altogether.

     Because soon enough he discovered that the contractor who was powdering his turmeric was actually mixing Chana Dal to adulterate the turmeric powder. And when he spotted similar practices being followed in a lot of these outsourcing ventures.

     He understood that this loophole would betray the trust of his customers. And just to keep the trust of his customers he ended all of his outsourcing practices and poured in his entire life saving to open up his own factory wherein he could powder all the spices.

     And not just that. He was betrayed by his childhood friend who used to take a commission on every single material which used to come in from the supplier. And many of his friends and family who were supposed to help him grow, started causing a lot of troubles while this man was putting his blood and sweat just to make sure that he can sell pure spices to the mothers of India. 

    And that is how, by facing a lot of hurdles Gulati Ji was able to establish a brand which the mothers of India could trust. And that is how due to the incredible hard work of Gulati Ji, today, people like you and me have the luxury of having mouth watering dishes like Chole Batture and Pav Bhaaji.

     And in this world where people talk about retiring at the age of 30 and people like you and me who often feel lazy inspite of achieving nothing. This legendary person was shooting for an advertisement even at the age of 97. 

    So because of this incredible dedication and persistence combined with extraordinary business acumen today, MDH has reached a level wherein it exports its spices to US, China, Vietnam, UAE, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, UK, Germany, Singapore, Sri Lanka with US exports alone valued at $351.6 million. And all of this put together, turned Gulati Ji into one of those icons because of whom India, today, is known for spices all across the world.

     Now the question is- What can we learn from this incredible story of the king of spice ?

     Lesson 1, we all need to realize that optimism is the faith that leads to greatness and the real test of optimism is how you choose to react even during the times of calamity just like partition in Gulati Ji’s life. While and optimist will try to see an opportunity in every difficulty, a pessimist will try to see difficulty even during the times of great opportunity. 

    Lesson 2, while outsourcing is essential for scaling up of any business it is also important to note that outsourcing along with a lot of growth will also bring in a lot of loopholes. So, as a leader of a business organisation it is important that you do all the petty works in the beginning because what might look like petty experience in the beginning will eventually help you find the loopholes in your business which could potentially destroy your whole business. 

    And last and most importantly, each one of us needs to understand that greatness comes at a cost that very few people can afford. For example, at that time, very few people could actually settle in for less profits by selling pure spices.

     Very few people had the ability to put in the hardwork to have a look at every single process just so that they could sell pure spices and keep the trust of an innocent mother when she wanted to make something tasty for her family because very few people understand that the cost of greatness cannot be paid with stacks of currency notes but with every ounce of blood and sweat that you put in to achieve it.

     Because at the end of the day, greatness comes at a cost of persistence. And once a great man said that “Nothing in this world can take place of good old persistence. Talent will not, which is why in this world there is nothing more common than unsuccessful men with talent. 

    Genius will not, which is why unrecognised genius is practically a cliché. Education will not, which is why the world is full of educated fools. 

    Persistence and determination alone are all powerful.” In our case they were powerful enough to turn an ordinary refugee into the spice king of India who will live in our hearts forever. Thank you.

    Cyber Bullying is the act of bullying people in form of social media or devices. It is a modern term for bullying, which emerged with the rise of internet and mobile devices. Cyberbullying takes place on digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. It can take the form of texts through SMSs, online chat forums, social networking sites and gaming forums. Acts such as posting, sending or sharing negative content that is harmful, mean or obscene, defines cyberbullying. Cyber bullying can take place in the form of some illegal physical activities and unlawful behaviour.

    How Cyber bullying begins:

    In this technology dominating world not only teenagers, but adults also addicted in the use f electronic devices and the internet.  Internet which connected the whole world and individual across the continents. Cyber bullying starts in virtual world and the cyberbullies enjoy the anonymity and the infinite reach of the internet to prey on unsuspecting and potential victims.

    Effects of Cyberbullying:

    1.Mental and Physical Effects: Cyberbullying can result in increased distress for the victims along with increased anger and frustration. They will vent this out on various occasions, and it might force them to get addicted to the virtual world where they can have several identities to hide their real one.

    2.Feel Alone and Isolated: Most of the victims are forced to stay away from any and all social sites in a bid to escape the cyberbullies. They separate themselves to feel a sense of protection form the outer world. Most of the victims do not reveal anything to their parents or family members to disappoint them. To escape the bullies, they may try to change their schools or home, but they are hardly able to escape the clutches of the tormentors.

    3.Disinterested in attending school: If a schoolmate bullies a  kid, then the first way for him to avoid the bullying is to stop going to school. He/she would choose to skip classes to escape the tormentors temporarily. The feeling of embarrassment and humiliation from the fellow students will prevent the kid to return to school and have a healthy school life.     The Curious Case of D.B. Cooper

    What Happened?

    On the 24th of November, 1971, a nondescript man bought a ticket under the alias Dan Cooper (who later came to be known by his pseudonym, D.B. Cooper) for a Boeing 727 aircraft at Portland, Oregon bound for Seattle, Washington in the USA. Thus began one of the great unsolved mysteries in FBI history which puzzles people to this day.

    Cooper was a quiet man who appeared to be in his 40s, wearing a business suit with a black tie and white shirt. He settled down into his seat and ordered a bourbon and soda drink while waiting for the flight to take off. A while later, he handed the flight attendant a note informing her that he had a bomb in his suitcase, and that he wanted her to sit next to him. The flight attendant did as she was told and took the seat next to him. Cooper opened his suitcase, revealing a bunch of wires and red sticks, proving to the flight attendant that his suitcase did in fact comprise of a bomb.

    He then communicated his demands to the flight attendant and made her write them down. Cooper had demanded 4 parachutes and $200,000 in $20 bills on arrival at Sea-Tac Airport (Seattle). The flight attendant then notified the captain of the plane, who further communicated this information to the relevant authorities in Seattle. The police and ground forces in Seattle hurriedly assembled the money and parachutes to be delivered to Cooper. Meanwhile, the pilots were flying the aircraft in circles above Seattle Airport, with the fabricated excuse that there was some minor mechanical problem so they could not land safely. In reality, they were simply stalling for time as the money and parachutes were being brought in.

    After about 3.5 hours of delay, the flight landed in Seattle and Cooper’s requirements were met immediately. With the money and parachutes delivered, he dismissed the 36 passengers in the aircraft, as well as 2 of the 6 crew members. After this, the aircraft refuelled, and Cooper ordered the pilots to set a new course for Mexico City via Reno and Yuma. Following his orders, the plane took off for the said destination.

    While on course, on the first leg of the journey towards Reno, Cooper ordered all the remaining crew members to go and enter the cockpit of the plane. It was at this point of time that Cooper lowered the rear stairs of the airplane and jumped out of it wearing a parachute and carrying his $200,00 in ransom money. He had jumped at 8:00 p.m. straight into an ongoing thunderstorm and was never seen again, and his fate remains a mystery to this day. Although the most probable outcome is that he died, the possibility that he survived could not be ruled out due to lack of evidence of his death.

    Furthermore, his real identity also remains an eternal mystery. The only traces Cooper left behind were some cigarette butts, a hair on the headrest of his seat, and his clip-on necktie. However, no DNA samples could be drawn from these items. The case was taken up by the FBI, and their investigation went on for decades and came to be known as the ‘NORJACK’ (Northwest Hijacking) case.

    Conclusion to the Case

    The only significant lead on this case came in 1980, when an 8-year-old boy wandering the banks of the Columbia River came across a rotting package full of $20 dollar bills amounting to $5,800. The serial numbers on the bills found by the boy matched those on the bills of money given to Cooper during the time of the hijacking, and so the FBI continued their investigations.

    However, there were no more significant findings, and the FBI were not able to ascertain the real identity of D.B. Cooper even after following around 800 leads and questioning numerous suspects. Finally, in 2016, the FBI announced that it was giving up their investigations of this case and had decided to dedicate their resources to other cases.
