India’s Olympic Wins

The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896 and it took India only four years before seeing their first representation at the Summer Olympic Games. It all started for India in 1900 when they sent the athlete Norman Pritchard to Paris where he won two medals in Men’s 200 meters and Men’s 200 meter hurdles. Till date, India has participated in every Summer Games since 1900, sending their first Olympic team in 1920 comprising four athletes and two wrestlers. It was, however, not till 1928 that India saw its next medal, after which there have been several Olympic medals obtained. Today India holds a total of 28 Olympic medals and seems to be improving its performance at the Olympics.

Hockey

The Indian hockey team dominated the Olympics from 1928 for decades to come, winning an unprecedented 3 gold medal titles. The dominance of India’s hockey team started in 1928 in Amsterdam, when Dhyan Chand scored a hat-trick against the Netherlands in the final. Major Dhyan Chand is revered today as one of the greatest sportsman in India, and also the greatest player in the history of hockey. By the Berlin Olympics in 1936, the gold medals had piled up for India and London 1948 was the first gold medal post-independence for India. The Indian team kept winning until 1960 when the gold streak was finally broken.

Boxing

In Beijing 2008, Vijender Singh became the first Indian boxer in history to win an Olympic medal. Then in London 2012, India’s newfound love for boxing saw Mary Kom winning a bronze medal for the country. With her win, Mary Kom had become, and remains to be a role model for Indian women wanting to get involved in sports.

Shooting

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was the first shooter to help India get a medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004, and inspired an entire generation to take up the sport. Following his footsteps, Abhinav Bindra won the gold medal in Men’s 10m Air Rifle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He remains the only individual Olympic gold medalist in India and perhaps the most notable among the Indian Olympic winners.

Tennis

India had gone without a medal of any sort for four straight editions before Leander Paes won a bronze medal in 1996. After losing to Andre Agassi in the semi-final, Paes went on to beat Fernando Meligani in the bronze medal match. The medal was a huge achievement for India as they had returned without a medal for many years before Paes won in Atlanta.

Weightlifting

Breaking the norm of only men fetching Olympic medals for the nation, India saw Andhra Pradesh’s Karnam Malleswari clinching the bronze medal in the 54kg category at Sydney 2000, becoming the first woman in doing so. She had created history, and after her many female athletes would follow to win medals for India.

Wrestling

In 1952, Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav had created history by becoming the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in an individual sport at the Helsinki Olympics. The sport was wrestling, and he had won a bronze medal for it. After that in 2008, Sushil Kumar clinched a bronze medal in wrestling after a great deal of struggle and effort. Furthermore, in a traditionally male-dominated sport, Sakshi Malik became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal with her bronze medal finish in the Women’s freestyle 58 kg category at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Badminton

In London 2012, Saina Nehwal became the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal when her opponent, China’s Wang Xin, was forced to retire hurt during the match in the semi-final. She was the first Indian athlete to win an Olympic bronze medal in the women’s badminton singles. In the following 2016 Rio Olympics, the nation witnessed PV Sindhu take one step closer to gold by becoming the first Indian shuttler to reach an Olympic final in the 2016 Games. She was not able to clinch the victory but won a silver medal in the Olympics. She was also the youngest Indian (21 years old) to achieve this feat.

Conclusion

Every single Indian medal winner may not be mentioned in this Article, but it is important to highlight that every single person who has won a medal for India must be respected, whether that medal is bronze, silver or gold. The Olympics are a worldwide event with the highest level of competition possible, so we should be proud of those who have won for India.

LEARNING LESSONS FROM THE BOOK- GO GIVER

1. Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.

2. The only winning proposition is one hundred percent. Forget win-win , focus on the other persons win. Because your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other peoples interest first.

3. As long as you are trying to be someone else or putting on some act or behaviour someone else taught you, you have no possibility of truly reaching people. The most valuable thing you have to give people is yourself.

4. All the giving in the world wont bring success, unless you also make yourself willing and able to receive in like measure. Thus, the key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

5. Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

The Legends Of Pensam – A Review

Have you ever regretted for not picking up a book earlier? I sure have. Here’s an ode to one of these books!

‘Everyday I saw clouds dropping lower and lower like omnious waves. The hills were blue, their outline rimmed in black, and the trees were still. Then fierce, hissing rain would cover the land like the sea’.

The Legends of Pensam by Mamang Dai

Introduction

I’m regretting now, I’ve never had bookish regrets like this for years. This book is an enchantress, an absolutely beautiful enchantress. The stories are lulling, it pulled me in to picturize the narration, to dream, to contemplate. The folklores, the enchanting description of nature, breathtaking portrayal of the Arunachal Pradesh gave me a book hangover. This book is certainly a tidbit for those who love reading contemporary Indian Writings in English.

PLOTLINE ANALYSIS

The Legends of Pensam‘ by Mamang Dai is a collection of short stories. They are all interconnected. There’s a story of a widow Pinyar and her son, interwoven in the folklore of supernatural being Miti Mili, the beliefs of indigenous people, their exquisite narration of the ancient stories are told in the mercurial prose.

The stories portray the colonial period, the Japanese wars, the landscape of Arunachal Pradesh, one of my favorite stories in this collection is ‘the words of women’. The story revolves around the rural women working in the mountains, cutting wood, cracking dry bamboo and carrying it back to the village, the raw portrayal of their demeanor. The generations of the families and their curiosity about learning the stories of the village are evocative.

CONCLUSION

Pensam means ‘In between’, the beautiful title syncs magically with the balmy stories. I picked this book up last month for the Northeast Readathon but I couldn’t read it, I was procrastinating relentlessly to read this beauty. I regret it now. I should’ve read this book earlier. Don’t be like Lavanya, if you are looking for a warm, sweet, beautiful short story collection! Get this right away guys!

Why did Windows Phone fail?

We all remember the time when Nokia made a deal with Microsoft to launch the Windows OS phones. And we also know some reasons why Windows Phones failed, which include; lack of accessibility to some useful Apps, partners like Samsung not launching Windows Phone, Microsoft’s approach to licensing Windows Phone, and the company’s failure to attract developers.

A former Nokia engineer shared some reasons behind the failure of Windows Phone on Reddit. He joined Nokia after the 2011 deal with Microsoft to put windows 7 on all its smartphones. And he also worked with the Nokia X project.

He believes that Microsoft’s failure to launch Android was the company’s biggest regret. Also, Microsoft underestimated Google and its services like G-mail, Google Maps, etc. Which ended up in 2012 when Google stopped funding efforts to make Apps for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.

He wrote, “Obviously Apple was red hot and Microsoft knew that, but Google was new to the OS business and they weren’t taken seriously enough. Android was pretty rough then, but the real value was Google’s services; when Google cut Microsoft off of YouTube, Maps, Gmail, etc, it made WP look cheap.”

The second reason mentioned was with ‘botched Windows 8’ and with the disgrace over ‘Microsoft metro interface’. Metro interface worked great with Windows 7 touch screen devices but it didn’t come out that great when Microsoft put it on the desktop in Windows 8.

The former employee wrote, “Before Windows 8, WP had a lot of people’s curiosity. After Windows 8, people associated the two together as bad products even though the teams then were pretty independent, and things done poorly on Windows 8 were not reflective of how the experience was on WP. Even with Windows 10, the stigma against Metro never recovered.”

He argues that as a leading tech company Microsoft still has a bad reputation due to its actions over the past decade. “At the time it was still horrible and it meant that the young guys who grew up hating Microsoft were making the big startups for other platforms,” the engineer said. He also said, “For all the negatives on the consumer side, coding for WP was always better than Android.”

After the harsh failure of Windows Phone, it was not possible to get the company back with more Windows Phone. By the year 2014, Android and iOS were blooming in the market, and no matter what Microsoft did to improve their Windows Phone there was no vital reason to switch. It was then when they decided to launch a secret work project “Nokia X”, the first android phone launched by Nokia.

Break the Binary

How will you feel when you’ll be made fun of based on your gender? or How will you feel when your family will abandon you because of your gender?
These are the most basic challenges faced by transgenders in India. They’re insulted for their appearance knowing that it’s natural and not their choice. They also face other problems such as physical and sexual violence, false arrest. They also face difficulties in getting their share in ancestral property. Due to lack of proper education, begging on the streets and sex work was their only option for survival.
After years of hard work and struggle, they’ve got their stand in society. Many transgender across the country have made their own identity and have inspired many.

A Handy Checklist for Google My Business Spam

If you work in local SEO, you know that dealing with spam on Google My Business is going to be a constant battle. This is especially true if you work in industries like:

  • Legal
  • Health
  • Home services

We need to understand why Google My Business spam is so rampant.

Unfortunately, having keywords in your business name is a massive ranking factor. As an example, I performed a search for “emergency plumber Los Angeles” and here are the top three Google My Business listings ranking in the map pack:

Emergency plumber Los Angeles Google map pack

The first result (24 HR Emergency Plumber Los Angeles Inc) is a lead generation website, which is against Google My Business Guidelines. The second result appears to be a lead generation website, too. The third result? You guessed it, it’s another lead generation listing, they don’t even list a website!

These companies sell leads to real plumbers at a hefty price. Clicking through View all to see all listings, you don’t find a real plumber until the 10th result! Outside of completely fake listings that need to be removed, sometimes competitors will keyword stuff their Google My Business name.

Our Google My Business Spam Checklists

There are two checklists: one for identifying potential listings violating Google My Business guidelines and the other is a reporting checklist.

The first checklist doesn’t need to be done frequently, but it would be beneficial to do it at least once. If your rank tracking is set up correctly for Google Maps, you will likely just need to pay attention to your map rankings. If you drop a position on a major keyword, what listing is outranking you now? If it’s a new listing, head to checklist no.2.

Checklist No.1:

  • On google.com/maps, make sure you’re in the area you want to find spammers
  • Use the search operator intitle:”keyword” to surface listings with the keyword in the business title
  • Any listing that has the primary keyword is a Yellow flag
  • Any listing that is ONLY named the keyword is a Yellow flag
  • Any listing that has a modifier (-) is a Yellow flag
  • Any listing that has no website is a Yellow flag
  • On a Google Sheet, add the business name, address, phone number, website, and link to Google My Business listing for each Yellow flag listing
  • Repeat this process for each major keyword (topic) that you/your client covers
  • For good measure, perform a few raw searches in Maps as if you were a customer looking for the particular service, including the city name

This checklist enables you to find potential listings relatively quickly. These listings may be fake or could be completely legit. The second checklist will help us go through each listing, one-by-one, to build a case for the listing to be corrected or completely removed.

Checklist No.2:

Tip: (A “no” response on any checklist item will require documentation)

  • Use the state’s business name lookup. Is there a business registered at the address?
  • From the listing, click on photos and then go to Street View and 360º.
    • Is there signage for the business?
    • Is it a personal residence?
  • In a new tab, do a search of the exact address/is the listing the only one at that address?
  • Visit the website. Is the branding/logo the same as the business name?
    • Does the site have an about page with real people or company history?
    • Is the content heavily ‘SEO’d’ and generic?
    • Is the content focused on connecting users to someone else (lead gen)?
    • For industries that require a license, is one listed? If yes, is it a valid license?

This checklist should be used on each listing that has a Yellow flag.

Documenting Your Evidence

As you’re going through the checklist, you need to document all of your findings, this will be used when we submit the Business Redressal Form.

Open a Google Doc, name it appropriately, and let your documentation live there. Each listing should have it’s own Google Doc. The more detail you can provide in the document, the better. Some suggestions for added detail could include adding screenshots, external links with descriptions, etc.

Suggest an Edit or the Redressal Form?

If you are reporting a competitor that is just keyword stuffing their business name and the location is legitimate, you may want to consider simply suggesting an edit first.

  • Pro tip: Do not use an email address that is associated with Google My Business listings. This can cause your other listings to be suspended. (h/t to my friend, Jason Brown).

If and/or when your suggested edit does not stick, then submit the redressal form. If the listing is fake, go straight to the Business Redressal Form.

Filling Out the Redressal Form

Follow the Business Redressal Form instructions and fill out the sections. When you get to the last section that allows you to explain why you’re requesting a redress, this is where your Google Doc is going to come in handy.

In this field, you can’t add photos, but you are able to include a link to your Google Doc. When grabbing the Google Doc link, make sure it is viewable by anyone with the link. If it’s not, Google Support will not be able to see the contents. Don’t just drop the link and submit, provide some context, and then place the Google Doc link.
Submit.

Repeat the process for each and every listing that you believe needs to be removed. Google recommends:

“If you have many URLs to report, we recommend submitting 10-100 at a time for a faster processing time. You can submit multiple URLs by clicking the ‘Add additional’ link or by uploading a spreadsheet with all the URLs.”

Now the hardest part begins, waiting.

In your original spreadsheet, add a date column and add the date that the redressal form was submitted. Timelines can vary depending on multiple factors but if nothing has happened after 10 weeks, then you’ll need to reassess the redressal and look for further evidence.

Having to deal with spam on Google My Business is frustrating and can be time-consuming, but if done correctly, can help protect users from spammers and help real small businesses. For more tips, check out SEMrush’s post about their Google My Business checklist.

Roman Architecture

Roman architecture has always been admired for its strong and colossal structure. Throne’s power and the ordinary lives of its citizens have greatly inspired the majestic architecture. The grand temples and buildings demonstrate the perpetual influence of gods over the people. Architecture has widely contributed to the European art and culture. It has been observed that the architecture Romans were influenced was from Greek’s art. The designs on Roman buildings were relatively similar to Greeks architectural designs. Though, the architecture was identical, Romans preferred Corinthian Order. Another characteristic feature that set its architecture apart was its continuous urge of perfecting concrete buildings in all of its monumental creations with modern arches and domes as a modern touch.

Roman Colosseum is the largest and most famous amphitheater of Rome. Its construction began in 72 AD under Emperor Vespasian and finished in 80 AD under his son Titus. It was built with materials like travertine limestone, tuff, wood, concrete. This colosseum has a seating capacity of 50,000 and more. Gladiatorial competitions, battles, executions, roman mythology dramas were conducted for entertainment purposes. Compared to other amphitheaters, Colosseum was built in the heart of the city. However, the interior of Colosseum was profoundly destroyed by fires and earthquakes. Even though, the structural standing of the monument is still sound, the pollution and general destruction has deteriorated the inner part of the structure.

Pantheon is a Roman temple built during 113 to 125 AD. It has dome structure with traditional porch. It served as a Roman Catholic Church. This monument stands on brick arches and hidden wall niches. The temple’s structure has survived because of its well-engineered walls and domes. The interior is refined with polished marble that shines when sunlight penetrates through the ceiling, which is called the Oculus, also known as ‘great eye. Being unique in all of Romans architectural creations, its interior and exterior classical designs have been adapted by architects.

Arch of Constantine was built in honor of Constantine’s triumph over Maxentius at the Battle of Milivian Bridge in 312 AD. Arch of Constantine is a glorious celebration of political power and leadership. It is well-known for geometric details and massive stone work. Lower part is covered with marble blocks and extraordinary marble brickwork. It is 20 meters high, 25 meters wide and 7 meters deep. In the main archway, victory figure occupy spandrels and river gods are depicted over the arches.  Emperor Marcus Aurelius’s life was carved on the arches which was remodeled to resemble Constantine I. It signifies Constantine’s changing religious affirmations.

Arch of Titus was built in 81 AD by Emperor Domitian that commemorates Titus’s and his father’s victor over Jewish rebellion in Judea. It measures 15.4 meters in height. The upper left and right of arches contains a winged woman that personifies victory. Temple of Jerusalem is partially depicted on south inner panels. North inner pane portrays Titus as the Triumphator, where there is an Amazonian wearing a helmet leading four horses carries Titus. The inscriptions on the horse were mainly written in gold or silver.

Roman architecture signifies beauty of triumph and rich culture. Roman culture has splendidly attracted people to experience the foundation of Roman history with astounding work of art that continues to inspire today’s architects.

LEARNING LESSONS FROM THE BOOK ‘REWORK’

1. BE A CURATOR

What makes a great product is not the things or features in it but the things which are removed, yes its true! Because people like it simple and easy to use so don’t make it complex, be like a good curator always look for removing things.

2. UNDERGO YOUR COMPETITION

In business most people focus on becoming better than competition than making a better product . But the best way is to do less than your competitor to beat them.

Solve the simple problem and leave the hairy, difficult, nasty problems to the competition. Instead of one upping, try one-downing .

3.WELCOME OBSCURITY

If you are unknown, you company is unknown then its just fine because this is the real time when you have full freedom to make a lot of mistake and no one will blame you because no one knows you, but once you get bigger you become too conservative and you don’t take risk, so enjoy this beauty.

4. PLANNING IS GUESSING

Your plans are not plans they are just guesses so if certain plan doesn’t got executed well, then don’t take it seriously, because they are just mere guesses and every time guessing cant be right. So stop worrying about it.

The Basics Of Building Your Own Greenhouse

Building a nursery is simpler than you may might suspect. You can pick various plans and sizes that you might want to fabricate. A nursery will give you solace at whatever point you visit your plants, vegetables, blossoms, or orchids. It additionally gives the required daylight and mugginess for these plants. You may unwind and appreciate it each time you visit where you have applied all your work of building a wondrous spot.

You may set aside more cash in the event that you choose to fabricate a little nursery. There are supplies and materials that you can utilize which ought to be barely enough as per your own pre-arranged spending plan. In case there is adequate room that can oblige a bigger nursery, do this is on the grounds that you might need to foster more plants and vegetables.

In the event that you truly want to construct a nursery where you can create and proliferate more plants, you ought to consider the various variables that would be essential on the sort of nurseries you might want to assemble. Here are a few hints and factors you ought to consider in building your own nursery.

  1. You may consider utilizing rescued materials on the off chance that you mean to make a bigger nursery. You may utilize these materials in planning and getting ready for a minimal expense spending nursery. This will likewise assist you with limiting the cost of different supplies and materials required.
  2. You ought to likewise decide the environment of where you reside. A protected nursery ought to be proper for cold environment regions. This will assist you with giving the required warmth and warmth for your plants. For warm places, a nursery that has a shade control would be prudent.
  3. You additionally needs to ensure that your nursery will be planned with legitimate air flow spaces, ventilation, bug control soil, radiators for winter season, and moistness control gadgets. You ought to establish a climate that is suitable for the sorts of plants that will fill in your nursery.
  4. The area of the nursery ought to be assembled where there is sufficient daylight. In the event that you pick a sun based nursery for vegetables and extraordinary natural product bearing plants it is ideal if the nursery is arranged on the east-west piece of where you reside in light of the fact that confronting it this way it is more presented to daylight.
  5. Think about the covering of the nursery. The most prudent shades are the glass made covers and fiberglass which probably won’t fit in your financial plan. Yet, simply realize that they give greater solidness and they don’t decay immediately contrasted with plastic covers. A nursery covered with glass or fiberglass permits greater moistness and warmth.
  6. You have the alternative to pick what sort of establishment you might want to utilize. The establishments can be concrete for a more gotten nursery. Others favor the more affordable lightweight establishment where they utilize ad libbed materials, for example, railroad ties, which they can undoubtedly connect to the ground. Everything relies upon the amount you will spend on the design of the nursery.
  7. You may likewise consider building a nursery that will augment its maximum capacity. You might need to add seats or materials that will be utilized for your solace each time you need to unwind in the nursery. You may likewise need to add numerous accomplices to the spot like programmed watering frameworks, warming frameworks, ventilation framework and other programmed hardware that are compelling in keeping up with the plants.
  8. You should utilize the “great bugs” for you bug control compound. They forestall and control the spread of the terrible bugs in a nursery. In the event that you at any point discover creepy crawlies in a plant, you ought to disconnect the plant and if conceivable spot the plant outside the nursery so the bugs don’t house in different plants.
  9. You ought to apportion a space where you can store composts, fertilized soil and different instruments that are fundamental in the nursery. You should put an instrument rack closer to the preparing place with the goal that it would be simpler for you to move the dirt from the pot of the plants. You ought to likewise put pails and apparatus holders to oblige the other hardware when they are not being used.

You can create and develop a wide range of plants with a flexible nursery. You may likewise need to repeat the developed plants to fill the nursery with an assortment of plants. Setting up a nursery will be more pleasant in the event that it finished with the assistance of the loved ones. So get them included as well

Programming Language

Before learning the programming language, let’s understand what is language?

What is Language?

Language is a mode of communication that is used to share ideas, opinions with each other. For example, if we want to teach someone, we need a language that is understandable by both communicators.

What is a Programming Language?

A programming language is a computer language that is used by programmers (developers) to communicate with computers. It is a set of instructions written in any specific language ( C, C++, Java, Python) to perform a specific task.

A programming language is mainly used to develop desktop applications, websites, and mobile applications.

Types of programming language

1. Low-level programming language

Low-level language is machine-dependent (0s and 1s) programming language. The processor runs low- level programs directly without the need of a compiler or interpreter, so the programs written in low-level language can be run very fast.

Low-level language is further divided into two parts –

i. Machine Language

Machine language is a type of low-level programming language. It is also called as machine code or object code. Machine language is easier to read because it is normally displayed in binary or hexadecimal form (base 16) form. It does not require a translator to convert the programs because computers directly understand the machine language programs.

The advantage of machine language is that it helps the programmer to execute the programs faster than the high-level programming language.

ii. Assembly Language

Assembly language (ASM) is also a type of low-level programming language that is designed for specific processors. It represents the set of instructions in a symbolic and human-understandable form. It uses an assembler to convert the assembly language to machine language.

The advantage of assembly language is that it requires less memory and less execution time to execute a program.

2. High-level programming language

High-level programming language (HLL) is designed for developing user-friendly software programs and websites. This programming language requires a compiler or interpreter to translate the program into machine language (execute the program).

The main advantage of a high-level language is that it is easy to read, write, and maintain.

High-level programming language includes Python, Java, JavaScript, PHP, C#, C++, Objective C, Cobol, Perl, Pascal, LISP, FORTRAN, and Swift programming language.

A high-level language is further divided into three parts –

i. Procedural Oriented programming language

Procedural Oriented Programming (POP) language is derived from structured programming and based upon the procedure call concept. It divides a program into small procedures called routines or functions.

Procedural Oriented programming language is used by a software programmer to create a program that can be accomplished by using a programming editor like IDE, Adobe Dreamweaver, or Microsoft Visual Studio.

The advantage of POP language is that it helps programmers to easily track the program flow and code can be reused in different parts of the program.

The advantage of POP language is that it helps programmers to easily track the program flow and code can be reused in different parts of the program.

Example: C, FORTRAN, Basic, Pascal, etc.

ii. Object-Oriented Programming language

Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) language is based upon the objects. In this programming language, programs are divided into small parts called objects. It is used to implement real-world entities like inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, etc in the program to makes the program resusable, efficient, and easy-to-use.

The main advantage of object-oriented programming is that OOP is faster and easier to execute, maintain, modify, as well as debug.

Note: Object-Oriented Programming language follows a bottom-up approach.

Example: C++, Java, Python, C#, etc.

iii. Natural language

Natural language is a part of human languages such as English, Russian, German, and Japanese. It is used by machines to understand, manipulate, and interpret human’s language. It is used by developers to perform tasks such as translation, automatic summarization, Named Entity Recognition (NER), relationship extraction, and topic segmentation.

The main advantage of natural language is that it helps users to ask questions in any subject and directly respond within seconds.

3. Middle-level programming language

Middle-level programming language lies between the low-level programming language and high-level programming language. It is also known as the intermediate programming language and pseudo-language.

A middle-level programming language’s advantages are that it supports the features of high-level programming, it is a user-friendly language, and closely related to machine language and human language.

Example: C, C++, language

Most commonly used Programming Language

As we all know, the programming language makes our life simpler. Currently, all sectors (like education, hospitals, banks, automobiles, and more ) completely depend upon the programming language.

There are dozens of programming languages used by the industries. Some most widely used programming languages are given below –
