World Hepatitis Day 2021: Theme, Hep types, and Significance.

What is hepatitis? Theme this year, few symptoms, about types of Hep, and how to contribute?

THEME 2021 : “Hepatitis Can’t Wait”

What is Hepatitis:

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. It can lead to scarring, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. There are 5 main hepatitis viruses: –

Types A, B, C, D and E. These 5 types are very serious since they cause severe illness, even leading to death. They can also cause outbreaks and spread of epidemic.

A person dying every 30 seconds from a hepatitis related illness

Causes :

Heavy alcohol use, toxins, some medications, autoimmune diseases can cause hepatitis

Ways of transmission: Have contact or receiving of contaminated blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment. Hepatitis B can transfer from mother to baby at birth, from family member to child, and by sexual contact.

Main symptoms:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Dark urine,
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain.

Types of hepatitis:

1 Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) :

Transmitted through consumption of contaminated water, food; sometimes sexual contact. It’s trace is present in faeces. In most of the cases, it is usually mild and when treated properly it can make one immune from further infections. But, left untreated it can turn life threatening.

Additional symptoms :

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort, (by your liver)
  • Clay-colored bowel movements
  • Severe itching

Safe, effective vaccines are available to prevent HAV.

2 Hepatitis B Virus (HBV): –

Transmitted through exposure to infective blood, semen, and other body fluids, mother to baby, family member to a child during early childhood, transfusions of HBV-contaminated blood and blood products, contaminated injections during medical procedures, and through injection drug use. Medical workers have a greater chance of exposure.

Add Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Loss of appetite

Safe, effective vaccines are available to prevent HAV.

IT HAS NO CURE, BUT JUST CAN BE PREVENTED

3 Hepatitis C Virus :-

Transmitted through exposure to infective blood, instruments during surgeries; even though the chance is low, sexual transmission is possible. If detected soon it can be treated. But, most of them have no idea they have Hep C starts with it’s acute form which rarely shows symptoms.

Add. symptoms:

  • Bleeding easily
  • Bruising easily
  • Itchy skin
  • Fluid buildup in your abdomen (ascites)
  • Swelling in your legs
  • Spiderlike blood vessels on your skin

NO Vaccine yet

4 Hepatitis D Virus : –

It can transmit through blood and body fluids but it only occurs when the person is already affected with Hepatitis B. IT IS MOST SEVERE FORM OF HEPATITIS. It can lead to lifelong liver damage and even death. HBV vaccine gives protection from Hepatitis D virus. If you have HBV, haven’t taken HBV vaccine and live where HDV is more prevalent; the chance of contracting HDV is higher.

Add. Symptoms:

  • Not feeling hungry
  • Joint pain
  • Dark urine
  • Light-colored stool

NO CURE

5 Hepatitis E Virus (HEV): –

Transmission through contaminated food like undercooked meat from infected animals, such as pigs or deer, or water. The one that causes most outbreaks. It can get better by practicing hygiene, but pregnant women and people with weak immune system are at a risk.

Add. symptoms:

  • Light-colored poop
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Joint pain
  • Less hunger and throwing up

Safe and effective vaccines to prevent HEV infection have been developed but are not widely available.

Why 28th July?

It is the birthday of Dr Baruch Blumberg, the Nobel-laurate scientist discovered the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), diagnostic tests and vaccine for Hep B.

How to contribute:

  • Practice hygiene for yourself and encourage those around you.
  • Join drives which support sanitation of unhygienic, neglected areas.
  • Educate yourself and people around you.
  • Donate to legit Hep donations.
  • Before travelling to areas where Hep prevails, get yourself vaccinated against Hep.
  • Spread awareness, because it might help someone one day. (Learning about symptoms encourages one to go to Doctor)
  • Join the campaigns by WHO.

Karnam Malleswari – Torch-bearer for women in Olympics

Karnam Malleswari is the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics and first Indian woman weightlifter to win gold at the World Championships.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu made India proud by getting India’s first medal at Tokyo Olympics 2021. She won silver medal in weightlifting am being the first Indian lifter to do so. But, most of us realized now about first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in 2000 (Sydney). She won Bronze medal in weightlifting in 2000. Let us remember Honorable Karnam Malleswari.

Karnam Malleswari :-

She was born on 1 June 1975, Voosavanipeta near Amadalavalasa, a hamlet in Andhra Pradesh. Her father Karnam Manohar was a college-level football player. She has four sisters. They are all well trained in weightlifting. It was her mother Shyamala, who encouraged and became her strength till the end Karnam Malleswari to pursue a dream. Her career started when she was 12. She was trained under coach Neelamshetty Appanna.

I feel proud to have created this pathway for our girls and to see them winning Olympic medals. Some even tell me today, ‘Ma’am you started it all’, so I feel delighted to have changed the perception, and it still remains my endeavor.

But Neelamshetty Appanna turned her away for being too weak and thin. Her mom encouraged her to keep going by training hard and proving herself that she can be whoever she wants to be. She was then noticed by Olympic and world champion Leonid Taranenko at a national camp ahead of 1990 Asian camp as a visitor since her sister Krishna Kumari, was selected for the camp. After testing her, he recommend her to the Bangalore Sports Institute.

It was her time to start shining, she broke 9 records in junior national weightlifting championships in 1990; which was her first championship.

Achievements:

  • Silver in her maiden senior national championship in 1990.
  • Bronze in her first weightlifting World Championships in 1993.
  • Gold in her next weightlifting World Championships in 1994, making her the first Indian woman weightlifter to win gold at the World Championships.
  • Silver at the 1994 Asian Games.
  • Malleswari won the world title in the 54 kg division in 1994 and 1995. Gold in World Championships in 1995.
  • Bronze in the World Championships in 1996. – Four consecutive medals in World Championships-
  • Silver at the 1998 Asian Games.
  • Bronze in the Olympics Game at Sydney in 2000.

In 1997, she married a fellow weightlifter Rajesh Tyagi, and in 2001 gave birth to a son. She took a maternity leave in 2001. She went to The Olympics at Athens in 2004 but due to severe back injury, she couldn’t give her best. She had to retire after that.

What is she doing now?

She works as the Chief General Manager (General Administration) of Food Corporation of India; Yamunanagar, Haryana.

Kargil Diwas 2021(Kargil war)

Why is Kargil Diwas celebrated? What exactly happened in Kargil? Let us get acquainted with Kargil War and honor our guardians as India celebrates 23 Years of victory in the Kargil war on 26 July 2021.

The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, was an armed conflict fought between India and Pakistan from 3 May 1999 – 26 Jul 1999 in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control.

Kargil:

Kargil is a City in Kargil district and the joint capital of the union territory of Ladakh. It impinges on the line of control between the portions of the Kashmir region administered by India and Pakistan.  After Pakistan’s defeat in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the two nations signed the Shimla Agreement promising not to engage in armed conflict with respect to that boundary.

How did the war start?

The Pakistani troops who were disguised as Kashmiri militants infiltrated into the Indian side of the LoC and strategically unoccupied areas locations in Drass, Kargil. Pakistan tried to create conflicts between Kashmir and Ladakh by calling the intruders “Kashmir Freedom Fighters” and tried to involve third parties to internationalize this issue. Probably their main aim was to bring Kashmiris on their side by creating upheaval through wars( Constant wars bring uncertainty to citizen’s safety and creates political imbalance). But, later they awarded Pakistani soldiers, removing the doubts regarding their involvement.

The positions of the enemy made the commutation hard through NH-1A, the national highway from Srinagar to Leh. The Pakistani government denied their involvement and blamed everything on Kashmiri militants. But, the retaliation and proofs like letters gathered by Ladhaki Scouts when they went to check on enemies proved that they were indeed from the Pakistani army.

The Indian Navy also prepared to blockade the Pakistani ports, especially the Karachi port, began aggressive patrols to  cut off supply routes under Operation Talwar

India retaliated, forcing remaining Pakistani fighters to retreat from the Indian zone. There were huge causalities. The official death toll on the Indian side was 527, while that on the Pakistani side was between 357 and 453.

Indian Army, Air force and Navy carried out Operation Vijay, Safed Sagar and Talwar respectively to provide India an all-round support.

Pakistan had named its move to take over the control of Indian posts along the LoC as Operation Badr, India called its çounter-offensive Operation Vijay.

Even now, the risk of infiltration and rise in insurgency in Kashmir due to chaos poses a threat. Using a third intervention to negotiate isn’t going to work and just increases misunderstanding. After 2 decades, tensions among LoC never settles down. Cease-fire resolutions have been adopted but they are violated every now and then; costing many lives in Kashmir.

This Kargil Diwas, let more resolutions and active, significant actions be taken to out an to this terrifying regional dispute.

“Vijay Diwas” (Victory Day) is celebrated on 26th July every year to cherish this victory and to honor our soldiers who put their lives on line constantly.

What is celebrated today? 24 July 2021

National Cousins Day, Drive-Thru, Pioneer Day.

Cousin: a child of one’s uncle or aunt.

HIstory:

The history of it’s origin is quite unknown. Well, one can theorize that whoever coined this day had special bonds with their cousins.

Cousins are people that are ready-made friends, you have laughs with them and remember good times from a young age, you have fights with them but you always know you love each other, they are a better thing than brothers and sisters and friends cause there all pieced together as one.”

– Courtney Cox

Significance:

This day is celebrated to cherish our bonds with distant to our cousin brother and sisters. When we visit our aunt or uncle’s place, we reunite with our partners in crime. We play games, create some nice nuisance for our elders, talk about our friends and foes, plan an escape to moon, pull an all-nighters, and enjoy heartily.

Be it younger or an grown up group of cousins, we have a lot to learn from each other. Soon, nostalgia about our past mistakes and fun hits us.

What to do today?

  • Get in touch with a long lost cousin.
  • Play a game of charades, ludo, scrabble or any another game available. Don’t let Covid stop you from enjoying a reunion with them. There are few online multiplayers to enjoy.
  • Share a memory you are most attached to.
  • Make plans to visit places you guys always wished to go.
  • Have a friendly competition.
  • Share your books and favorite movies.
  • Have a go and beat each other at video games or outdoor ones.
  • Share your gratitude for their existence and the love you received.

FACTS:

  1. All European Jews Are Distant Cousins.  The global population of Ashkenazi Jews, a Jewish community from Central and Eastern Europe make up a huge amount of present Jews.
  2. Research published in 2014 says close friends are likely to be fourth cousins because they might share quite lot of genetic material.
  3. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are third Cousins. Yes, you heard it right, the most famous married cousin couple Elizabeth and Philip are both descendants of the U.K.’s Queen Victoria.
  4. It is true that marrying your cousin can cause the baby to have birth defects.

Few other days celebrated today:

Climate change| Are we finally going to compensate for the damage we did?

Death dolls due to floods in Italy, China, Germany and India keep rising. “Airpocalypse” in Siberia to forest fire, “Bootleg fire” in Oregon, flash floods in Southwest, Southeast and Northwestern Europe.

(AP Photo/Anupam Nath)

Climate change – When there’s a significant change in weather in a given area over a period.

Intense climate change can occur due to external as well as internal factors. External factors including change in solar emission, change in global energy balance due to change in the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, and volcanic activity.

Internal factors are human induced which leads to Greenhouse Effect.

The classical period used for describing a climate is 30 years, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Floods:

A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. In the sense of “flowing water”, the word may also be applied to the inflow of the tide.

NEWS:

China’s central Henan province received its heaviest rainfall which led to massive floods, killing over two dozen people. Many dams have breached and it  flooded the highly populated downstream areas. Scientists have said many factors contribute to flooding, but a warming atmosphere caused by climate change made extreme rainfall (Cloudburst) more likely.

The People’s Republic of China is the world’s leading annual emitter of greenhouse gases and mercury.

High levels of air pollution in China’s cities caused to 350,000–400,000 premature deaths.

In India, Himachal Pradesh experienced torrential rain, cloudburst, and putting in many lives and environment. Floods and landslides has caused mayhem in more than 4 states in India.

Of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, 21 were in India in 2019.

Germany has taken a terrifying hit; causalities cross 160. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, has demanded to take faster climate action as the casualties keep on climbing.

Every News channel now covers how terrifying rainfall has caused havoc over the world. Will it take more causalities, economic damages in rich nations to take a significant step to heal our world? To find ways to cut down their harmful amount of chemicals? To see past their greed for money, power, and status, and adhere to the environmental damage?

We are human. Everything we have is all due to nature, all due to the abode we call Earth. If Earth doesn’t remain the same, if there is no land or adhering to our selfish intent let’s say, fertile land left, we would be constantly fighting to even have a pure drop of water or food for us to fetch.

Reality is far from movie. It is not going to be like 2012 (Movie) or the Earth isn’t going to go for full apocalypses mode wherein humanity can start over. It is the feeble attempt to believe we can start over. What if cloudbursts never stop, the land we polluted probably will merge with the oceans rivers we polluted. There won’t be any quality of life not only for us humans but also for other living beings who have done nothing but trying to maintain the ecosystem.

There are many things to ponder upon. Why do we take climate change so lightly? Why are people who strive to heal nature met with false notices and hopes?

Greta Thunberg, 18 years old Swedish activist, is known for challenging world leaders to take immediate action for climate change mitigation. We are surely proud of her and many more environmentalists. She is very vocal and dedicated to spreading awareness about the climate crisis, taking steps herself to let us see ways to protect our Earth, and target those in the power of controlling carbon emission to take steps.

But, I feel we let her and many down in many ways. If you recall, she pushed Siemens to make the “only right decision regarding projects such as Adani Group’s Carmichael thermal coal project. It has been a focus of environmentalists since 2010. The voices went unheard, But, a cartoon of her getting assaulted spread, all due to just voicing her concerns enraged and disgusted lakhs.

EVERY PROBLEM HAS A SOLUTION. WE ARE JUST NOT LOOKING HARD ENOUGH (INTENTIONALLY AND CONSCIOUSLY).

I believe that we need to come together, to use our success in the scientific field, to use our intellectuality, and to actively come up with eco-friendly alternatives. We can encourage environmentalists and environmental engineers to go on with their endeavors and lend strength to deal with things that pose a great risk to nature.

  • To make plantation drives a mandatory event in schools.
  • To encourage beach, ocean, and any water bodies clean-ups.
  • To teach basic greener alternatives.
  • To learn why we need to fight against climate change.

Let our voices, actions come together despite our conflicts and work to give back to Mother Earth.

Thin line between pride and arrogance | Are people just envious of my success?

Am I really arrogant or am I just confident? How to deal with people calling me over-ambitious or arrogant when I am just working towards my dream?

Let’s first dive into difference between pride i.e., self-confidence and arrogance.

As we discuss previously, pride is having satisfaction over our abilities and our accomplishments.

Previous article: https://eduindex.org/2021/07/22/pride-prejudice-and-aggression/

Arrogance is having excessive pride over one’s or a particular group’s accomplishment to an extent wherein we believe that our abilities are nothing compared to others and the success would have come sooner if I had done it alone.

In psychological context, there are two kinds of pride.

  • Authentic pride- Positive feeling about ourselves, loved one’s success, our actions after successfully coming out from comfort.
  • Hubristic pride- It usually involves ego coupled with arrogance. Has an exaggerated self-concept.

PRIDE

  1. Any act that boosts our self-esteem, building trust about what we are capable of, and recognizes it, accepts our flaws. It pushes you to perfect your talent and bring forth a blooming personality.
  2. You accept the potential of those working with you and try to form a group that will put in collective work to achieve your collective goal.
  3. Values other’s input and doesn’t hesitate to ask for guidance.
  4. Accepts constructive criticisms, filters their work to make it more productive.
  5. Never slacks off.
  6. Is aware of strengths, weaknesses, and areas which can be improved.
  7. Keeps striving better (Knows that knowledge is boundless).

ARROGANCE

  1. Believes that I have everything I need and that my gifts are beyond immeasurable.
  2. Believes that I have no flaws and cannot make a mistake or create complications from my actions.
  3. Every bad outcome is due to the people affiliated with my work.
  4. Looks for external validations.
  5. Thinks that there is no need to practice or attend meetings because I can win no matter in the end.
  6. Is okay to not follow moral rules (Legal ways) to achieve my needs.
  7. Other’s input is worthless (but will take others’ great ideas making it own saying you got this idea from me) and find them distracting.
  8. Works alone even though being a part of a group activity.

SELF-REFLECTION

If you need to know, whether you really are being arrogant due to impatience or intentionally or people are envious of your success, potential; self-reflecting on your actions, thoughts, and intention will help you resolve your doubts and get back on track with change in yourself or environment.

Self-reflection: Ability to witness and evaluate our own cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes. To give an objective thought about your behaviors, thoughts, attitudes, and desires.

You work hard, burn the midnight oil, respect everyone and their opinions, and achieve success. But in the end, you get judged as an overachiever, arrogant and rude. Those judgements try to bring your down, make you doubt yourself.

Well, let me just highlight that it is okay. These doubts usually arise because you care about how you respect not only yours but others’ effort that goes into bringing about results which is beneficial for everyone.

Look at few differences I have mentioned above and reflect.

Are you dismissive of your colleagues’ efforts? Do you assure them to implement their ideas but you end up doing completely different without informing them? Do you go late to meetings and displace your external anger on their capabilities?

Few more points to take note of:

  1. Not being honest about their work, where you want improvements, and blaming entire failure on their recklessness. (This is concerning leadership).
  2. Thinking you are superior and forcing rules obnoxiously while you try to put them down.
  3. Seeking constant validation.
  4. Yes, you have achieved great things, burnt that midnight oil but boasting about it is not going to change the outcome of your efforts. You have to keep learning and communicate and inculcate views of your colleagues to bring the best out of them and to bring about a team with the same goals and motivation.

Negative critics/members with less motivation, insecurity and less self-esteem may see you with the lens blurred with their issues.

Reach out, write a diary, and find out ways to bring out the best in you. People will usually have prejudices regarding your ethnicity, your way of leading, the cause of your goals, gender, religion, race, color, and everything that has nothing to do with you or your work but everything about themselves.

Do not give up because just like supporters exist, people against you will try to affect you. Believe in yourself, your teammates, reflect occasionally, and keep moving forward with your head held high.

Pride, prejudice and arrogance.

Augustine, it is “the love of one’s own excellence.”

Pride:

Pride is a double edged sword.

Pride is usually considered in 2 ways
1) The feeling of satisfaction that comes from one’s own achievement or those affiliated to us.
2) Having a high opinion of oneself which sometimes expresses itself in the form of arrogance or excessive belief over one’s abilities.

The opposite of pride is humility

Prejudice:

It is described as a stereotyped attitude towards a particular social group.
There are many types of prejudices. There’s ageism, sexism, racism, those from different religions and ethnic groups, people who are overweight or underweight,  people with sexual orientations and the list is endless.
It varies according to environment who are more likely to become a target. -Prejudice does not need a base or proof. It is mostly based on an individual’s delusional theory regarded someone/something because of something they went through.

-Scientific postulates need proof, trial, and error, and goes through thorough objective examination to form a theory.
It is deduced from natural occurrences to aid the growth of every being on Earth.

-Thus there is a clear boundary between prejudice and science.
Thinking that a human born into an ethnicity they had no control over, is preposterous cannot be ever justified.
Well, I mean have thought over this.
You treat them like a monster, take away the room for growth, or won’t let them have an understanding of the world, force upon them their ancestors or someone’s act, treat their every mistake or an act of love as sin.
You are letting them realize that no matter what they do, they will always be regarded as criminals. In order to live a normal life, in order to escape from Hell on Earth, they will have no option but to take actions that align with their prejudices to have a chance at life.
Aren’t you giving birth to the one you are so wary about? How will assuming negative about someone you haven’t met going to remove the things you want?

It is humane to worry about wolves in sheep’s clothing, it is natural to protect someone you love. But hatred and pride blind not only you but also others from peace, from a true safe environment.
The mutual understanding that prejudice exists but at the same time, trying to resolve those by complete honesty and understanding will protect you from external influences ( yes, I mean someone who wants conflicts to exist between the groups), and will give the groups a chance to make way for growth despite the differences.
It is very easy for me to say and I realize how idealistic or dreamy it seems, but without interaction between conflicting groups, without a wish to make things better for innocent ones around you, the casualties, hatred, and stereotypes are bound to grow and create wars.

When prejudice causes a group to be treated differently than others in situations that call for equal treatment, it is called discrimination.

Arrogance:

It can simply be defined as aggressive evolution of pride, and manifested in form of extreme expression emotionally (within one’s mind or vocally).  To exaggerate one’s own worth or importance often in a pompous manner.

  • Doesn’t believe they can mistakes or faults.
  • Tries to put blame on others.
  • Creates a fearful environment.
  • Always wants to be right.

We will talk about the thin line between pride and arrogance soon in following articles. 🙂

Dr. Death (2021)|Review| A completely chilling series

Who is Dr. Death? How did he come to be? How did he continue practicing medicine despite hurting a terrifying number of patients? This series unfolded politics with an operating room, hospitals, and law.

A real-life story about a doctor who maimed and killed his patient relentlessly and without guilt.

Plot:

The story revolves around Christopher Duntsch, a former neurosurgeon who “Intentionally” maimed and even killed his patients. His two fellow colleagues and a prosecutor Michelle Shughart’s journey to stop him and bring justice. The drama miniseries is based on the podcast(by Wondery), with the same name, which covered his heinous crime.

Release date: 15 July 2021

No. of episodes: 8

Network: Peacock

Genre: True Crime

Writer(s): Patrick Macmanus

Executive producers: Jason Blumthal, Marshall Lewy, Steve tisch and more.

Running time: 43-60 minutes.

Let’s start with introduction of characters and their stories!

Christopher Duntsch aka DR. Death or Dr. D.

From the start, it is very obvious that he is a very obnoxious, extremely narcissist with God complex ( someone who thinks they has been divinely blessed or has an exceptional talent compared to everyone else, that they can perform risks to save someone’s life because they can’t make mistakes. Even if they do make mistakes they can either miraculously correct them or it is the fault of people around them which they then discard to take action upon) and who is in denial of his abilities.

“I don’t have complications”, “The attending interrupted which distracted me”, “I can leave kindness and become a stone-cold killer, and the way he slammed every doctor’s procedure to prove his way of surgery screams an insane amount of sociopath vibes and terrifying negligence. These were some of the red flags

He has said to have performed 37 surgeries, out of which 33 have intense complications and some dead. A neurosurgeon who brags about educational accomplishment all the time, doesn’t accept the existence of human error

Roles Portrayed:

Each and every actor portrayed their roles excellently. You could feel their irritation and anger radiating through the screens. Patient’s nervousness, excitement, desperation makes you imagine yourself to be in their or their loved one’s situation. The nonchalance of Duntsch ( By Joshua Jackson), his ability to use charm and threats to remain a doctor and get selected in other hospitals infuriates you to the bone. Dr. Robert Henderson’s (Alex Baldwin) immeasurable patience and Dr. Randall Kirby’s (Christian Slater)relatable impatience and anger take you on a rollercoaster ride.

Review:

The show starts with his patients at Dallas Medical. 3 days, 3 patients. One dead, one woken with extreme pain and no mobility in legs, and one is said to be recovering.  Dr. Robert Henderson had to perform a revision surgery on Madeleine Beyer, who woke up with extreme pain. During surgery he found out that there were many holes which were from the attempted attachment of screws, her fragments of bone dispersed and piercing main nerves. He wonders what did Duntsch do to her since her bones were completely shattered.

Through his course in Dallas, his circulating nurse, Josh Baker(Hobert Point-Du) consults and preps his OR. He is concerned about Duntsch as well as his patients. He questions and tries to protect patients. You get to see how nurses and everyone else except the doctor is treated with so little respect. Their voice of concern went not only unheard but also was looked upon as an interruption. Although one can understand that surgery is complex and doubts by people around us is effective, but in this scenario, the patients lost around 1700-2000 CC’s of blood and the nurses decided to voice their opinion. How can this be disregarded and the voices getting unheard? How can continuing to operate while a patient is hemorrhaging be ignored when these issues were brought to the Texas Medical Board? How is aggressively asking for a procedure like a craniotomy in a hospital where craniotomy is not performed (SO, they won’t have any instruments to do that and to counteract if it goes wrong isn’t there) okay when the situation could have been handled by simply transferring the patient to another hospital? It clearly shows that his intent was either to cover up his harm and to show doctorly care by performing a procedure

While writing the plot, I preferred to choose “Intentionally” since trained doesn’t just mean only that a superior/ attending is responsible for imparting knowledge. The learner/ resident has the equal responsibility to learn and practice what they have been taught. It also means that an attending, as well as a resident themselves, recognize what are they capable of and what are their limitations since it is someone’s life we are talking about. Just like Kayla Gibson said, he should have stuck to research.

Intentionally, because it is no wonder he knew he doesn’t know how to operate and yet he went on to shut everyone off and to continue operating the way he thought was right, i.e. recklessly treating his patients as mere Guinea pigs with little to no regard to human anatomy.

The series had me completely hooked till the end. Waiting for someone to listen to them, wanting to help them even it took place long back, feeling for each character since they seemed so genuine. I hated Duntsch and how calmly he dealt with everything. I hated how he easily went up the food chain and be unscathed. Joshua’s acting got me for real.

Well, let’s look at it objectively. Before, During and After. ( Spoilers ahead, if you haven’t seen the series completely)

He “compassionately” tells his patient about how not getting done a surgery could lead to what-nots, boats about degrees to nervous family members, wears the same scrubs with holes to operations. Then, during surgery, he erratically operates, slices through a vertebral artery takes a piece out of the esophagus, damaged vocal cords, intends to remove a disc but in the end, doesn’t even go near it, and perform surgery around the disc. Keeps asking for more follow-up to perform surgeries. But, would never check up on a patient, ignore their calls, and completely abandon them. He even operates on his best friend leaving him quadriplegia, blames others, and abandons him.

Dr. Kirby and his childlike behavior gets me since that’s how most of us would feel in the moment. The face of disbelief he carried all the way is remarkable.

To imagine that he would be still practicing medicine if his colleagues hadn’t reported and taken every measure to stop him, it is truly horrifying to imagine how many more lives he would have destroyed.

Note:

I applaud each and everyone who took a step against him and try to mend the system which is so broken. This series was so well made. The storyline was continuous, his behavioral relation between present and past, coldness, and the lives he affected out of surgery world; everything was so well thought and executed.

Seeing the series, might help you understand the world of surgery.

Although, the negativity of Dr. D is the main focus, we can always believe that there good doctors out there and we can ourselves support good ones and protect ourselves from Dr. D by asking questions regarding procedures and not being afraid to listen to our hesitation. Don’t let people like Duntsch affect other doctors whose only intention to save lives and help people. Do not get discouraged to reach out to medical care and do everything in our power to treat ourselves and our loved ones. Just remember to ask, have an open mind to all kinds of people, and be mentally prepped to go for treatments.

1-Haikyuu

Haikyuu!! Is an anime about volleyball. It is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate. The story follows Shōyō Hinata, a boy determined to become a great volleyball player despite his small stature.

I am absolutely in love with this anime. Quirky yet mature characters, massive positive energy (without the cringeyness), good and steady character development, close to reality and filled with moments that will fill you with many emotions. It is the type of anime, which will keep you hooked till the end and wanting more of it.

No. of Seasons: 4 (With 4th season having 2 parts)

2)Dr.Stone

Dr. Stone is a Japanese manga series written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by the South Korean artist Boichi. The first episode aired in Japan on July 5th, 2019 and ended on December 13, 2019.

The anime unfolds with the introduction of the personalities wherein Taiju, the brawny guy is collecting himself to confess his love. A green light envelopes the sky and everyone. In this world where humanity has been petrified, scientific genius Senku and his brawny friend Taiju use their skills to rebuild civilization.

An absolutely hilarious, scientific, realistic yet lil unrealistic and an all-package anime. Main characters be making faces like so-called villains and villains like the sane ones. You are gonna love the humor, creativity with innovations and probably learn to make some of the scientific inventions.

No. of season: 2

No. of volumes: 21

3) Noragami

Noragami is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Adachitoka.  It is a shounen brought to you by Studio Bones. Noragami is about a stray God called Yato, who wants to build a shrine of his own. His journey to do so, with his hilarious and annoyingly careless yet caring personality is what makes this anime unique. The fun is unlimited, relatability and appropriately written characters makes it more special.

Male and female protagonists have been written better than what i have seen till now, Diverse characters, straightforwardness and extremely crude, chill personality of characters. The anime has really less episode considering it’s quality but the fun and wholesomeness compensates for it.

No. of season: 2 (2 OVA)

No. of volumes: 23

4) The Promised Neverland.

The Promised Neverland is a Japanese manga series written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump from August 2016 to June 2020. group of orphaned children in their plan to escape from their orphanage, after learning the dark truth behind their existence and the purpose of the orphanage.

I believe that cuteness, child energy, super relatability to our world, intellectuality, and wholesomeness are less than enough to describe this anime. It is pretty tear-jerker anime. The twists, scenes makes you want to help those kids through your screen. Although, in second season the anime’s plot changes a lil, if you are looking for a series to keep you on your toes, this is it.

No. of Seasons: 2

No. of Volumes: 20

This action, comedy anime is based on Alien samurai setting where the humans and alien are living together after the war. Gintoki Sakata, the main protagonist of the series, owns a shop named “Odd jobs Gin” and as its name suggests they accept any type of work as long as they’re paid for it.

Animated by Bandai Namco Pictures and written by Hideaki Sorachi, the cast of Gintama is arguably the best an anime has to offer. Even though the arc’s are short and start is slow, one can never get enough of the parody, action and the drama it provides.

No. of Seasons: 5 (4 movies and 1 OVA)

No. of Volumes: 77

7)Steins Gate

Okabe Rintaro, a self proclaimed Mad scientist accidentally discovers about time travel and time leap. Steins;Gate which is almost ranked in top 10 of every review page and ranked 3rd in MAL (My Anime list) is a time travel story, but not a typical time story. Its not only about the main protagonist travelling or leaping through time, it deals with many modern theories of time travel such as The Time Paradox, Butterfly effect, String theory and much more.

Unlike most anime’s, the side cast is one of the best out there. Every character used has their own importance on the overall plot. The start may be slow for some viewers but that’s the beauty of Steins;Gate.

Steins;Gate was produced by Mika Nomura and Yoshina Doi, directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki and Takuya Sato, and is written by Jukki Hanada

No. of Seasons: 2 (Along with 5 movies and OVA’s )

No. of Volumes: 3

8) Asobi Asobase

The story revolves around three classmates who play simple hand games and their exposure to more weird games.

The opening song gives you vibes of innocence, sweetness and everything nice. Well, the outro is a complete chaos. This pretty much sums the entire series, the girls are innocently chaotic. Filled with crazy ideas regarding the concept of club, extreme honesty and horrifically funny, this girls are absolutely hilarious.

Asobia Asobase made me remember everything I did in school days, every silly games I played. The anime just keeps getting better and more hilarious with each episode.

Honestly, I have never laughed this hard before. If you want to see something that’s going to make you laugh by hitting that pause button without cringing, this is a must watch for you!

No. of season(s): 1 (Episodes: 12)

No. of volumes: 12

International Nelson Mandela Day 2021!

Why do we celebrate this day and its significance, his life and theme for 2021.

‘This day is also known as 67 Minutes Mandela Day, as for 67 years he fought for social justice.

The theme for 2021 Nelson Mandela International Day is “One Hand Can Feed Another.”

To further this recognition of his legacy, the month of July is also unofficially recognized as “Mandela Month” in South Africa.

About Nelson Mandela:

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was also a statesman and philanthropist. Influenced by Marxism, he secretly joined the banned South African Communist Party (SACP). Although initially committed to non-violent protest, in association with the SACP he co-founded the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961 and led a sabotage campaign against the government. He was arrested and imprisoned in 1962, and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the state following the Rivonia Trial. Mandela served 27 years in prison

He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.

Over the course of his life, Mandela was given over 250 awards, accolades, prizes, honorary degrees, and citizenship in recognition of his political achievements. Among his awards were the Nobel Peace Prize, Bharat Ratna, the Soviet Union’s Lenin Peace Prize, and many more. Within South Africa, he was widely considered “The Father of the Nation” and “The Founding Father of Democracy.” Worldwide, he was regarded as a “Global Icon” and was described as “One of the most revered figures of our time” by Rita Barnard.

In the 1950s, he was elected as the leader of the youth wing of the African National Congress (ANC) liberation movement. He first resorted to peaceful protests. But he was met with violence by the government, he went on to support an armed movement. Mandela was an important symbol for the oppressed in South Africa who were fighting for their rights. He was extremely instrumental in tearing down the oppressive government and laid the foundation of democracy.

He started the Nelson Mandela Foundation to combat HIV or AIDS, support educational and rural development. In 2009, the United Nations proclaimed July 18th to be International Nelson Mandela Day. On this day, people are asked to spend 67 minutes doing something good for others, which represents all the 67 years he spent working towards change.

This day is used to encourage this sector and to give special offers to mark its origin.

5) National Tattoo Day

The word “tattoo” is derived from the Polynesian language for tatau, which means “to tap or to mark.”  A tattoo is a form of art wherein we mark our treasured moments or quotes to remember.
We can consider tattoos as an individual’s self-expression and sometimes tells you things that matter to the person who adorns them.
The culture of body ink dates back to Egyptian and ice mummies which reveals several forms of symbols and status.
Although the history of celebrating Tattoo day is unclear, it is being officially celebrated since 2016

5 signs your mind is warning you about mental illness

What classifies as an abnormal behavior? How to differentiate between normal and abnormal thoughts/ actions and behavior? Who gets to decide them and their treatments?

It often feels like walking on eggshells when we discuss what is abnormal and what isn’t. In a societal context, the kind of behavior which is often seen, encouraged, and occurs frequently is called “Normal Behavior”. The sort of behavior and actions that are rare and deviates from social norms are regarded as “Abnormal Behavior”. But deviance from social norms cannot be always labeled as abnormal behavior since it is subjective to one community.

The situational context i.e., the social settings or circumstances which preceded or continued when the event occurred makes a significant difference in how thinking or behavior is labeled. For instance, let’s take phobias. A person comes to a therapist saying that they have severe anxiety and fear when they people’s hands or balloons or cheese. This would have been taken as something absurd since it was unheard of. But now, a therapist might discover that a traumatic event occurred when they were exposed to hands, balloons, or cheese which made them develop chirophobia, globophobia, and theophobia respectively.

The thinking or behavior which significantly disrupt one’s thought processes or course of actions, which affects themselves or/ and affects people around them can be termed as maladaptive or abnormal behavior. Maladaptive behavior or thinking also means that a person finds it hard to adapt to day-to-day living. It is the key element in the definition of abnormality.

Well, how do psychologists decide what is abnormal?

Rather than pinpointing what is abnormal, psychologists tend to focus on how effectively one deals with daily encounters with the world, the levels of distress it is causing an individual, and their reactions to them. To get a clear picture of what’s going on, individual and professional psychologists must take in all factors while determining whether one’s functioning and behavior are significantly affecting their lifestyle. (But remember that the main objective is to figure out what is causing them; be it biological or mental factors, to find out how to cure the mental obstacles or find an effective way to lessen their intensity. It isn’t you, rather it’s just a part of you. Abnormality and insanity are completely different)

Psychopathology – The study of behavior and psychological dysfunction.

Few symptoms:

Firstly, never self-diagnose! If you feel strongly regarding these signs, find a professional psychologist who feels right to you, share your thoughts and experiences and have a healthy discussion about what you researched and clear out doubts. Be open to every possibility and kudos for taking a step to care, help and love yourself.

  1. Getting easily annoyed and having a hard time handling frustrations and urges.
  2. After having dealt with a traumatic experience, has the thinking or behavior been unusual? It can range from subtle isolation to severe panic while dealing with a stranger or a familiar course of events (that previously led to the trauma).
  3. Does thinking or behavior go against the social norms? (P.s Norms change over time)
  4. An extreme change in moods and lifestyle.
  5. Certain news, course of events, or items (Triggers) that affect your ability to function or causes significant subjective discomfort?

What gives birth to mental illness?

Psychodynamic view: It includes Freud’s belief which emphasizes that unconscious psychological process (The wishes, urges, and fear which we suppress creates conflict outside of a person’s consciousness), childhood experiences, and environment before birth influences our thoughts and behaviors. To keep the repressed thoughts from resurfacing, disordered functioning aka defense mechanism develops as a way to keep them contained.

Cognitive perspective: It talks about how we think about a problem interfered by disordered thoughts which leads to mental disorders. One can overcome this by consciously using more rational cognitions. How we perceive, evaluate, and anticipate events tend to be negative and disruptive when interfered with mental blockages.

Biological view: This view beliefs that disorders are caused by organic or physical causes such as defective neurotransmitters, genetics, traumas to the brain, and basically neuroanatomy. For instance, personality traits are influenced by genetic inheritance, and in disorders like schizophrenia, dopamine levels are believed to play a part as well as differences in the brain anatomy.

Behaviorists believe that just like normal behavior we learn abnormal behavior influences largely by conditioning and observational learning. For example, children with parents who deal with substance abuse or an environment with violent circumstances give birth to various coping mechanisms which might be healthy or unhealthy.

Although, just like we can learn all kinds of behavior, we can unlearn them too.

How to find the right treatment(s) for you?

Well, Trial and error! Having a medical professional gives you a safe room to mistakes, share and learn from your experiences and find more therapies the right way. Psychotherapy and biomedical therapies are common courses of treatment.

Psychotherapy includes insight therapies; the main goal here is to help both mentally healthy and psychologically disordered persons try to understand their motives and actions, action therapy (more focused on changing behavior rather than insights), and more. The main goal is to resolve the issues from their roots, learning and unlearning behaviors and developing healthy habits.

Biomedical therapy includes the usage of medicine, surgical methods, and noninvasive stimulation techniques. Antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti-cycling agents, and hypnoanxiolytics are the main classes of psychiatric medications.

Note that, biomedical therapy is used to alleviate or eliminate symptoms of disorders. Sometimes, biomedical and psychotherapy go hand in hand. When it comes to treating psychological disorders, I believe that cure can have a variety of meanings. Many behavioral disorders cannot be cured but with proper treatment, one can live a productive and happy life which usually accounts for the cure of the disorder.
