The Sri Lanka national cricket team is one of the most prominent teams in international cricket, known for its rich history, talented players, and passionate fan base. Representing the island nation of Sri Lanka, the team competes in all formats of the game—Test matches, One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 (T20) cricket—under the governance of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the official cricket board.

Historical Background

Cricket was introduced to Sri Lanka during British colonial rule in the 19th century. However, it wasn’t until 1981 that Sri Lanka became a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), which allowed them to participate in Test matches and officially compete on the international stage. Prior to this, they had played cricket at a non-Test level, gaining experience and making their mark in regional tournaments.

Sri Lanka’s rise to prominence in international cricket was relatively swift. In 1982, they played their first-ever Test match against England. Despite being a young team, they gradually developed a reputation for being competitive and skillful. Their breakthrough came in the 1990s, a decade that would see Sri Lanka transform into a cricketing powerhouse.

1996 ICC Cricket World Cup Victory

The defining moment in Sri Lankan cricket history came in 1996, when they won the ICC Cricket World Cup. Under the captaincy of Arjuna Ranatunga, Sri Lanka defied expectations to win the tournament, defeating some of the most established teams in the world. Their victory in the final against Australia was a testament to the team’s tactical acumen and fighting spirit. Players like Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda de Silva, and Chaminda Vaas became household names, while the team’s aggressive style of play, especially in the early overs, revolutionized the one-day game.

The 1996 World Cup victory not only brought glory to the team but also had a lasting impact on cricket in Sri Lanka, inspiring generations of cricketers and elevating the status of the sport to a national passion.

Key Achievements and Tournaments

  1. World Cup Participation: After their historic win in 1996, Sri Lanka has consistently been competitive in subsequent World Cups. They reached the finals in 2007 and 2011, narrowly missing out on lifting the trophy again. Both times, they were runners-up to Australia (2007) and India (2011).
  2. ICC T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka has also had significant success in the T20 format. They were runners-up in the 2009 and 2012 T20 World Cups but finally clinched the title in 2014, defeating India in the final. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene were key figures in this triumph, leading a new era of Sri Lankan cricket.
  3. Asia Cup: The Sri Lankan team has a proud record in the Asia Cup, a regional tournament featuring the top Asian teams. They have won the tournament multiple times, their most recent victory coming in 2014. Their consistent performance in the Asia Cup underscores their dominance in the region.

Formats and Playing Style

Sri Lanka has shown versatility across all three formats of the game:

  • Test Cricket: Sri Lanka has produced some of the finest Test cricketers, including Muttiah Muralitharan, who holds the record for the most Test wickets in cricket history. Their Test performances have seen highs, such as series wins against top-tier teams like India, Australia, and England. Batters like Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, and Tillakaratne Dilshan have contributed heavily to the team’s success in Test cricket.
  • ODIs: Known for their aggressive approach in ODIs, Sri Lanka has been a pioneer in attacking batting in the first 15 overs, thanks to players like Sanath Jayasuriya. They were trendsetters in the ’90s and continue to be a formidable side in limited-overs cricket.
  • T20 Cricket: Sri Lanka’s adaptability in T20 cricket is well-known. They are known for being able to strike a balance between attacking cricket and strategic bowling, with players like Lasith Malinga, one of the greatest death bowlers in T20 history, leading the charge.

Iconic Players

Over the years, Sri Lanka has produced some of the most iconic cricketers in the world. These players have not only set records but have also redefined the way the game is played.

  • Muttiah Muralitharan: Widely regarded as one of the greatest bowlers of all time, Muralitharan holds the record for the most wickets in both Test and ODI cricket. His unique bowling action and ability to turn the ball on any surface made him a nightmare for batsmen around the world.
  • Kumar Sangakkara: A stylish left-handed batsman, Sangakkara is one of the highest run-scorers in international cricket. He was known for his elegant stroke play and consistency across all formats.
  • Mahela Jayawardene: Another batting maestro, Jayawardene was a key figure in Sri Lanka’s middle order. His calm demeanor and tactical nous helped him lead the team to several memorable victories.
  • Sanath Jayasuriya: Jayasuriya revolutionized one-day cricket with his explosive batting at the top of the order. He was also a handy left-arm spinner, contributing significantly with the ball.
  • Lasith Malinga: Known for his slingy bowling action and deadly yorkers, Malinga is regarded as one of the best limited-overs bowlers of all time, particularly excelling in the T20 format.

Challenges and Future Prospects

While Sri Lanka has a glorious history, the team has faced challenges in recent years, including a transition phase where many of their legendary players retired. This has led to a period of rebuilding, with new talents like Kusal Perera, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Pathum Nissanka emerging.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has been working hard to nurture young talent through domestic tournaments and development programs. With the right combination of experience and youth, the team aims to regain its place among the top cricketing nations.

Fan Base and Culture

Cricket in Sri Lanka is more than just a sport; it’s a way of life. The passionate fan base, vibrant cricket culture, and unwavering support from the public have always driven the team to greater heights. Stadiums like the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and Galle International Stadium are iconic venues that have witnessed some of the greatest moments in Sri Lankan cricket.

Conclusion

The Sri Lanka national cricket team has a storied legacy that is marked by triumphs, iconic players, and an enduring passion for the sport. From their remarkable World Cup win in 1996 to their consistent performances across all formats, Sri Lanka continues to be a force in international cricket, blending experience with fresh talent as they strive for future success.

This victory was significant as it gave the country a reason to celebrate amidst various challenges and unrest at the time.

Although his captaincy tenure was not without challenges, with ups and downs in the team’s performance and some internal conflicts, Younis’ stature as a player remained untarnished.

He remains the only Pakistani player to score over 10,000 runs in Test cricket, a milestone he achieved in 2017 during a series against the West Indies.

He also holds the record for most centuries by a Pakistani in Test cricket, with 34 centuries to his name.

His ability to graft innings and build partnerships made him a pivotal figure in Pakistan’s batting lineup for over a decade.

Retirement and Post-Retirement Role

Younis Khan retired from international cricket in 2017 after Pakistan’s historic Test series win against the West Indies. His farewell was emotional, as he left the game as one of Pakistan’s greatest ever cricketers. His retirement marked the end of an era, leaving a significant void in Pakistan’s batting lineup.

After retirement, Younis Khan remained actively involved in the development of cricket in Pakistan. He took up coaching roles, notably becoming the batting coach for the Pakistan national team in 2020. His experience and knowledge of the game are seen as valuable assets for grooming young cricketers in the country. Argentina wins FIFA world cup.

The Lusail Stadium hosted what will go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, World Cup finals of all time. Argentina were cruising for much of the match, until Kylian Mbappe converted a penalty and scored a sensational equaliser to force the game into extra-time. That led to more insane football as chances flew around at both ends. Messi scored late in the second-half of extra time to seemingly win it for Argentina, only for them to concede a penalty mere seconds later. The flawless Mbappe converted that as well, thus becoming the first player since 1966 to score a hat-trick in the final of a World Cup. And yet, he ended up on the losing side, with Argentina winning the penalty shootout. Messi finally got his hands on the covetted World Cup trophy in what he said will be his last match in this tournament.

Mbappe wins the Golden Boot, but Messi bagged the World Cup. It was the battle of the Number 10s, as two titans of the game stepped up and gave it their all. But it was the veteran that stood tall in the end. Nobody expected Argentina to dominate the way they did for the first eighty minutes of the match. Nobody expected them to lose their lead twice in the match. And certainly nobody expected Mbappe to score a hat-trick and still find himself on the losing side. But for all the criticism that Argentina had received over the years for crumbling under pressure, this World Cup has shown that there is none better than them when it comes to penalties, where nerves mattered the most.

Ukraine President’s request to FIFA ahead of the final match.

World Cup organizers have rejected a request from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to deliver a message ahead of the tournament’s final. Zelensky had asked to share a plea for world peace ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final but was turned down by FIFA, soccer’s governing body, CNN reported.

FIFA has gone to significant lengths to try and remove elements of politics from the 2022 World Cup, despite the very tournament being a political issue itself due to the nature of where it is being held.

Addressing to the situation, the FIFA authority quoted  “We are defending values, we are defending human rights and rights of everyone at the World Cup. Those fans and the billions watching on TV, they have their own problems. They just want to watch 90 or 120 minutes without having to think about anything, but just enjoying a little moment of pleasure and joy. We have to give them a moment when they can forget about their problems and enjoy football.”

Team India

Team india practice session

The revival of Indian batting has reached a turning point. Since the lethargic Tournament that occurred last October in the UAE, much exertion has been put into attaining a do-over. Commencing on Sunday, there seems to be an opportunity to try it for the very first time in a cross competition. India could use an adversary that regularly wins in the UAE as a beginning point to determine whether their 180 degree batting turnaround will break their 15-year T20 WC winless streak subsequently this year.

With such a decent top, India currently has the chance to adhere to this destruction strategy after improving their batting results over the past ten months in every part of the Twenty20 game by accepting the dangers and benefits about not performing cautiously. After their respective sabbatical, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli return, giving VVS Laxman and Rohit Sharma a crucial decision to make at the start of this campaign. Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, and Ravindra Jadeja make up India’s 5-6-7 finishing axis, with Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant acting as useful floaters. However, with their back to regular fortitude and as a sign of the batsman dominance hierarchy, this strategy may need to be adjusted.

Tactics: In this year’s T20Is, 12 of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Twenty strikes had arrive inside the PowerPlay. India will seek to utilise this skill against a team with a top-3 and middle-order batting average of 42.35 and 15.59, accordingly, since January 2021, which shows a noticeable talent gap amongst sides. Since January 2021, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have scored 1000 or more runs in T20I, therefore breaking that opening partnership should be India’s top bowling priority.

Team pakistan

Team pakistan practice session

All tempo issues and decision-making difficulties for Pakistan are related to its bowling. Due to Shaheen Afridi’s injuries, Pakistan has now been hindered vs an outfit that has had trouble handling the left-hander in previous matches. Mohammad Wasim Jr. is now unavailable due to injuries sustained during practise.

Shahnawaz Dahani and Naseem Shah are Pakistan’s two quick bowlers, and they have a cumulative total of two T20 Internationals of encounter. Hasan Ali, who had not been initially selected after a lacklustre year with ball, is now returned to the side. With his left-armer-free bowling options, Babar Azam must be precise, while leggie Shadab Khan, making his first Limited – overs match since December 2021, must also get going right away.

Tactics: Babar must use his skills wisely in Shaheen’s absence against an enthusiastic Indian batting lineup. It is important to wisely utilise the large sizes of the Dubai stadium, especially in the PowerPlay overs, when India has struck 71 sixes in 37 innings since January 2021. Pakistan has only hit 30 of them throughout this time period (in 10 less innings), which helps put the level of risk-taking into perspective. Timing the insertion of leggies Shadab and Usman Qadir will also be crucial, depending on where Rishabh Pant bats.

Head to head encounter

India has a better 8-5 win ratio over Pakistan at Asia Cups. Five of 6 Asia Cup competitions among the two teams since 2010 have been won by India.

Expectations

Dew’s effect causes problems for teams that bowl second. However, India has prepared for this possibility by electing to bat first if it is feasible since their last participated overseas. In 16 T20Is played following the 2021 World Cup, India has batted first 12 times and has lost just three of those contests.

Key players

Virat Kohli, Babar Azam,Rohit Sharma, Mohammad Rizwan,Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Haris Rauf.

What Captains have to say before match

Rohit Sharma (India): “The mood in the camp is buzzing. It will be a challenge to play against Pakistan without a doubt. We do talk about our losses, that’s how we improve as a team. That loss [in Dubai last year] did hurt us at that point, but I think it’s been a while since that game has been played. We learn from our mistakes. For now, it’s a fresh start for us and obviously, the team is coming out of playing a lot of T20 cricket. We will not think too much about what happened in October, that was a long time back.”

Babar Azam (Pakistan): “No heat at all [between the two sides]. It’s normal and we have to adjust to everything as a professional. Every match is important for me and it is my responsibility as captain that I give my 100 percent. Injuries are part of the team. We have a good bench strength and we have a young battery of fast bowlers who have performed well and I have belief in them.”

History of India & Indian National Movement.

Early times the Indian subcontinent appears to have provided an attractive habitat for human occupation. Toward the south it is effectively sheltered by wide expanses of ocean, which tended to isolate it culturally in ancient times, while to the north it is protected by the massive ranges of the Himalayas, which also sheltered it from the Arctic winds and the air currents of Central Asia. Only in the northwest and northeast is there easier access by land, and it was through those two sectors that most of the early contacts with the outside world took place.

Within the framework of hills and mountains represented by the Indo-Iranian borderlands on the west, the Indo-Myanmar borderlands in the east, and the Himalayas to the north, the subcontinent may in broadest terms be divided into two major divisions: in the north, the basins of the Indus and Ganges (Ganga) rivers (the Indo-Gangetic Plain) and, to the south, the block of Archean rocks that forms the Deccan plateau region. The expansive alluvial plain of the river basins provided the environment and focus for the rise of two great phases of city life: the civilization of the Indus valley, known as the Indus civilization, during the 3rd millennium BCE; and, during the 1st millennium BCE, that of the Ganges. To the south of this zone, and separating it from the peninsula proper, is a belt of hills and forests, running generally from west to east and to this day largely inhabited by tribal people. This belt has played mainly a negative role throughout Indian history in that it remained relatively thinly populated and did not form the focal point of any of the principal regional cultural developments of South Asia. However, it is traversed by various routes linking the more-attractive areas north and south of it. The Narmada (Narbada) River flows through this belt toward the west, mostly along the Vindhya Range, which has long been regarded as the symbolic boundary between northern and southern India.

India’s movement for Independence occurred in stages elicit by the inflexibility of the Britishers and in various instances, their violent responses to non-violent protests. It was understood that the British were controlling the resources of India and the lives of its people, and as far as this control was ended India could not be for Indians.

On 28 December 1885 Indian National Congress (INC) was founded on the premises of Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit School at Bombay. It was presided over by W.C Banerjee and attended by 72 delegates. A.O Hume played an instrumental role in the foundation of INC with an aim to provide Safety Valve to the British Government.
A.O Hume served as the first General Secretary of INC.
The real Aim of Congress is to train the Indian youth in political agitation and to organise or to create public opinion in the country. For this, they use the method of an annual session where they discuss the problem and passed the resolution.
The first or early phase of Indian Nationalism is also termed as Moderate Phase (1885-1905). Moderate leaders were W.C Banerjee, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, R.C Dutt, Ferozeshah Mehta, George Yule, etc.
Moderates have full faith in British Government and adopted the PPP path i.e. Protest, Prayer, and Petition.
Due to disillusionment from Moderates’ methods of work, extremism began to develop within the congress after 1892. The Extremist leaders were Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal, and Aurobindo Ghosh. Instead of the PPP path, they emphasise on self-reliance, constructive work, and swadeshi.
With the announcement of the Partition of Bengal (1905) by Lord Curzon for administrative convenience, Swadeshi and Boycott resolution was passed in 1905.

Ipl revenue more than Epl?

After the 15th edition of IPL concluded in 2022 with the recently formed Gujarat elephants, led by Hardik Pandya, securing palm, the Board of Control for Cricket in India( BCCI) chairman Sourav Ganguly has said, “ The IPL generates further profit than the English Premier League”.

The English Premiere League or the Premiere League is considered the most viewed football event in the world. The Premier League, is the top position of the English football league system. queried by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of creation and deportation with the English Football League.
still, Ganguly’s statement comes at a time when media companies are are fighting for the elusive media rights to the IPL, the world’s richest sports league, anticipated to cost up to$ 6 billion. Ganguly further stated that he feels proud to see that the game of justice has been evolving in India. He also comment “ I have seen the game evolve, where players like me earned a many hundreds and now have the eventuality of earning crores. This game is run by the suckers, by the people of this country, and by the BCCI, which was formed by justice suckers. This sport is strong and will continue to evolve.”
The IPL generates further profit than the English Premier League. It makes me feel happy and proud that the sport I love has evolved to come so strong,” Ganguly said at India Leadership Council Event while speaking to Deepak Lamba, CEO, Worldwide Media, President, Times Strategic results Limited. The IPL 2022 was held in a much larger scale than the former seasons.

How IPL made cricketers and BCCI one of the richest in global sport ?
The Indian Premier League( IPL) in a span of just 15 times has managed to come one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world. The initial edition of the IPL was played in 2008 and there has been no looking back ever since as the T20 league continues to witness a massive growth in its fashionability across the globe. IPL is arguably the biggest T20 league in the world and has the stylish players from across the globe playing their trade in the competition.
The Indian Premiere league has created millionaires out of youthful cricketers and made BCCI as one of the richest governing bodies in the world of global sport.
Aruguably, the high- octane, big- hitting carnivalesque event provides a must- see product, driving broadcast subscriptions by the millions and pulling in huge advertising profit.
IPL brigades admit a share of the TV rights and backing plutocrat, and around 10 to 15 percent of ticket deals.
They can also induce their own profit through economic shirt or other auspices.

Profit Creators
The BCCI earned$ 533 million from the IPL in 2020, treasurer Arun Dhumal told Indian media, but its finances are marked in secretiveness.
In its 15th time, the BCCI is anticipated to earn fresh profit of ₹ crore per time( ₹,715 crore for 10 times) from the new brigades besides ₹ 444 crore which it has entered from VIVO as a reassessment figure.
When the event expanded to 10 brigades this time from the original eight, the transaction for the rights to enjoy the new votes drew transnational stab including the Glazer family, who enjoy Manchester United.
They were eventually beaten out by Indian mogul Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG empire, who paid the BCCI$ 930 million to form the Lucknow Super Giants.
The alternate new ballot, the Gujarat Titans, bring the global adventure fund CVC Capital$ 690 million. The brigades spent nearly$ 75 million in the February player transaction, with Mumbai Indians retaining gate- keeper- batsman Ishan Kishan for$ 2 million and Punjab lords paying England’s Liam Livingstone$1.52 million for his services.

Broadcast rights are the BCCI’s biggest plutocrat- incentive. Star India, possessed by Disney, paid$2.55 billion for a five- time TV and digital rights deal that expires at the end of this season.

Gaming as a career option in India

Gaming is not seen just as a hobby or a timepass but can be considered as a great career option and is becoming a part of skill development, social interactions via joining specific gaming communities etc.

India has witnessed a strong growth in the gaming sector in the past few years. Even before the lockdown time of 2019, several gamers from India have come up and have been recognized even worldwide. Also, the pandemic gave people a boost as many people started playing during the pandemic just for timepass and streaming on online streaming platforms like YouTube , Twitch etc.
