What’s Opt ed and how to write one?

As you all guessed it already, yes, it is a section in a newspaper. So, what do you think exactly is the expansion of ‘opt ed’ and the meaning behind it? Before going deep into the answer, let’s know editorial page in a newspaper is a separate page that is fully devoted for public express their opinions through letters to the editor. This is important to know as Opt ed is often placed on the editorial page.

Opt ed column

What is Opt ed?

Opt ed is the abbreviation of the word opposite the editorial page. Opt ed is an article that often has the author expressing an opinion to create a discussion among the readers, this article is not affiliated with the media publisher. It is written by a person who is qualified enough to have an opinion. It is between 700 – 800 words. As it represents the clarity of thinking, it is very important for the person who is writing the opt ed to have a defined clarity on his or her opinion.

How to write one?

There are few suggestions to produce an effective opt ed article.

Ways to attract a reader

Catchy title

The title of the article should be appealing, as you have not got all the time of the reader. The reader should be pulled in to read the article just by looking at the title and be convinced that it’s worth his or her time to continue.

Start your article by addressing the issue

Instead of spending a paragraph to introduce the issue, it is better to get straight to the main point. As a lengthy introduction can tire the reader.

Make it look short

Sticking to the word limit is an important rule to be followed. Article will be more effective if it is short and clear. As lengthy-looking articles are often rejected by readers. In other words, sticking to the word limit decides whether the reader will pick the paper or not.

The opinion should belong to you

You should own the opinion that is being expressed. It is better not to be a ghost writer (a person writing someone else’s opinion). Owning the opinion is very important as the ghost writer may not always agree with your opinion, which will end with the article being not so effective and powerful.

Evidence

The article would be well built if your points or opinion on an issue is addressed with evidences. Placing more evidences on the article can give more clarity to the readers.

Knowledge

You should have significant knowledge on the issue that you are going to write about. Providing information regarding the topic with inaccuracy will land you and the newspaper organization that published on trouble. On the other hand, it will mislead the readers.

Do Opt ed writers get paid?

Before knowing the answer, let us know Opt ed writers are of two types – one that works when the newspaper organization approaches him or her to write an Opt ed article and the other is one of the readers (public) who approach the newspaper organization to get their article published on their newspaper columns.
The first type of Opt ed writers get paid mostly while the second type often gets rewarded with publicity that adds to their market image.

Few Newspaper Organizations in the market

Is Media still Working On its ethics and norms.

As the UP Election are on the way all the political parties are on their way to lure the public towards them to getthe votes and to win the elections. Therefore a lot interviews and rallies have started taken place. India has just came out of the second wave of Covid-19 and somehow there were many political rallies lead to the boost in cases at some places.

Sadly the same thing is happening again and the rallies and political gatherings have started again. No one knows what can be the result of all this but as there are a chances of having a third wave of Covid-19 around October it is not something that leaders should be focusing on.

Among all this the role of media has became limited to promoting the government and several products only. The major news channels are not talking about the problems that may arise as the result of the actions taken by Government. Upon having a chance to interview they only end up asking silly questions like a 5 year old fro, prime minister and from chief minister as well.

The role of media is to ask questions on behalf of the public but it seems to do everything except that only.

what do you think about current media and what do you think about the government. please share your thoughts in the comments below.

The Legends Of Pensam – A Review

Have you ever regretted for not picking up a book earlier? I sure have. Here’s an ode to one of these books!

‘Everyday I saw clouds dropping lower and lower like omnious waves. The hills were blue, their outline rimmed in black, and the trees were still. Then fierce, hissing rain would cover the land like the sea’.

The Legends of Pensam by Mamang Dai

Introduction

I’m regretting now, I’ve never had bookish regrets like this for years. This book is an enchantress, an absolutely beautiful enchantress. The stories are lulling, it pulled me in to picturize the narration, to dream, to contemplate. The folklores, the enchanting description of nature, breathtaking portrayal of the Arunachal Pradesh gave me a book hangover. This book is certainly a tidbit for those who love reading contemporary Indian Writings in English.

PLOTLINE ANALYSIS

The Legends of Pensam‘ by Mamang Dai is a collection of short stories. They are all interconnected. There’s a story of a widow Pinyar and her son, interwoven in the folklore of supernatural being Miti Mili, the beliefs of indigenous people, their exquisite narration of the ancient stories are told in the mercurial prose.

The stories portray the colonial period, the Japanese wars, the landscape of Arunachal Pradesh, one of my favorite stories in this collection is ‘the words of women’. The story revolves around the rural women working in the mountains, cutting wood, cracking dry bamboo and carrying it back to the village, the raw portrayal of their demeanor. The generations of the families and their curiosity about learning the stories of the village are evocative.

CONCLUSION

Pensam means ‘In between’, the beautiful title syncs magically with the balmy stories. I picked this book up last month for the Northeast Readathon but I couldn’t read it, I was procrastinating relentlessly to read this beauty. I regret it now. I should’ve read this book earlier. Don’t be like Lavanya, if you are looking for a warm, sweet, beautiful short story collection! Get this right away guys!

IIT-MADRAS, AVISHKAR HYPERLOOP TEAM QUALIFIES FOR EUROPEAN HYPERLOOP WEEK

A group of students with team named “AVISHKAR” from IIT Madras have been working tremendously towards the technology behind the future of transportation, HYPERLOOP. The team comprises of forty students from various department of IIT, madras. They have been working on this new prototype hyperloop project since last November.

BUT, WHAT IS HYPERLOOP?

Basically, hyperloop is a high speed mass transportation system. A hyperloop is a super speed ground-level transportation system in which people could travel in a hovering pod inside a vacuum tube at speeds as high as 760 mph (1220 km/h).

While talking about the product, Neel said, “Hyperloop is a proposed mode of transportation in which many pods will be traveling inside a vacuum tube, capable of attaining high speeds due to no air friction and reduced air drag.” It IS the fifth and most efficient mode of transportation that the world is moving towards, he added. Further he said, “Because Hyperloop is sustainable, it works on electrical energy, we can install Solar panels on top of the tube, which could store energy and the same energy could be used to propel the hyperloop. This is way more sustainable .”

HOW DOES A HYPERLOOP WORK?

It has three major components: a tube, pod, and terminal. The tube is a large low pressure system that is sealed and tube can be constructed either above or below the ground. A pod is a coach that runs inside this controlled system and this pod employs magnetic or aerodynamic levitation along with electromagnetic or aerodynamic propulsion to glide along a fixed guideway. The terminals are used for arrivals and departures. Hyperloop is based on simple science called Magnetic levitation. But one thing that needs to be noted is, that it requires complex machinery and sensors to make a Pod travel at nearly 1000 km/h inside a vacuum tube. However the team has cracked that and named their pod “GARV”, which translates to “PRIDE”. It consists of Carbon Fiber shell, packed with advanced machinery and sensors.

STATEMENT:

Pranit, who is Head of Braking Module, said that Garv is their second Pod which is more efficient and lighter than the one they designed for SpaceX. “This time we are introducing several technologies like linear induction motor to achieve ‘contactless propulsion’ and ‘contactless braking. The motor produces a magnetic field which makes the Pod move forward and the contactless Braking has magnets which come closer to the rail, creating a Braking force and decelerating the Pod,” Pranit added.

Parth, a member of the Controls team, said, “Our team started in November. Everything we did online such as brainstorming sessions and discussions about the simulations. Once we were confident, we came back to the institute and started working on the Pod.” He said, “We are participating in European Hyperloop Week which will be conducted on 19th – 25th July and Valencia, Spain. Because of the pandemic, we are forced to compete virtually, but that is not a setback for us.”

EUROPEAN HYPERLOOP WEEK SELECTION:

With all their hard work, they have now crossed the hurdle and are qualified for the European Hyperloop Week that is to be held in Valencia, Spain from July 19 to 25. The team will participate virtually due to pandemic restrictions. With upgraded prototype, the team estimates the travel time between Chennai and Bangalore to be a mere 30 minutes ride instead of a six hours journey. They are also working on the study of energy, costs, demands and other aspects of hyperloop so as to access the economic feasibility of hyperloop in India.

I Quit: It’s Okay To Think About Quitting

“I quit.” That’s what I think three or four times a month.

To be honest, the thought of quitting whatever I’m doing in my life has been on my mind as long as I remember. When I was in high school, I wanted to quit and just find a job. When I played basketball, I wanted to quit.

When I started a business, I wanted to quit and get a job. When I got a job, I wanted to quit and get back to my business.

I can go on and on until I reach the present. I know, it sounds like an existential crisis that people in the first world only have. But that’s not what’s going on.

You’ll never find me crying about stuff like missing out on parties, not being able to get my hands on a ‘one-of-a-kind’ t-shirt (you hype beasts out there), or a dead battery.

But no matter how much I love what I do, the thoughts of quitting and just walking away show up in my mind every time things get hard. And in the past, those thoughts cost me many nights of sleep.

About two years ago I had enough. I wanted to quit thinking.

So I started becoming aware of my thoughts instead of always acting on every single thought I had.

“You don’t control me,” I would say to myself like a weirdo. But it works. I’m much calmer, patient, and happier because of it. However, when I want to quit, I still listen to it because sometimes it is a sign.

But more often, it’s just fear. And I refuse to surrender to it. And so should you.

Don’t Quit When It Gets Hard

I’m all about quitting things that are not worth it. Sometimes, you’re doing things that don’t contribute anything to your life. For example, I’ve left jobs, clients, and even friends in the past.

However, I’m firmly against quitting when things get hard. And unfortunately, that’s exactly the reason most of us quit.

Look, achieving goals never happens in a linear way.

We believe there’s a straight line from where you are to where you want to be. Let’s say your goal is to start a business so you can have more freedom in your life. That was my goal since I was 17.

I still remember how I came up with that goal. I started working several jobs since I was 15. I worked in kitchens, stores, and call centers. And I quickly realized, there’s only one person who benefits from all this: The one at the top.

So from an early age, I set my mind to working for myself. I thought I could just start working for myself from the beginning.

But that’s not how it worked out for me. I had to take a lot of detours. I worked for many other people in between. I also started businesses that failed. And I’m still no way near where I want to be.

But understanding that life is not linear helps us to change the way we think.

It took me years to figure out how you can work for yourself successfully. Along the way, I’ve thought about quitting many times.

Now, I realize that’s a good thing. If you never feel like quitting, that means life is too easy, and you need to take action in your life.

Everybody plays tough and pretends they can easily handle life. I don’t believe that. No one knows what they’re doing. Some people are just better at dealing with their fear than others.

Because when you get over your fear, good things happen. Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can say to make things easier for you. Life is not easy. No matter what you do, it’s time to stop watching Netflix every night and browsing webshops for the newest clothes.

Don’t put your life off. It takes a while to figure things out. But that doesn’t mean you should quit. I’ve learned that if you haven’t reached your goals yet, or haven’t found a way to be successful, it doesn’t mean you’re a loser.

It means you haven’t found out how to win yet. If you keep going, you will find out.

But if you quit, you won’t. So don’t.

6 Lessons I Learned From 4 Years In College

Is college worth the investment of your time and money? And what do you even learn in college?

When it comes to learning—I like to learn by doing. So from that point of view, going to college wouldn’t be necessary for me. But I did go. For six years.

Most of my friends and peers who are like me never went to college. They just did things. But weirdly enough, I did not only go to college, but I also loved it.

I spent four years getting a bachelor’s degree in business, and another two years to get a Master’s degree in marketing from another university.

People often ask me:

  • “Should I go to college?”
  • “Should I drop out?”
  • “Should my kid go to college?”
  • “Do you need a degree to get a job?”

I don’t think I’m in a position to answer any of those questions. It all depends on what you want to do in life.

The only thing I can do is share with you what I’ve learned from those six years in college. Because there are some valuable things I’ve learned that I probably wouldn’t know if I didn’t go to college.

So here are the 6 biggest lessons I’ve learned in college.

1. Learning Should Be Fun

Most of my professors were quite boring. And that often made learning a boring affair.

But fortunately, I also had many enthusiastic professors. That made me learn an important lesson: Learning is not boring. People are.

The school doesn’t have to be boring as long as the teachers are passionate about what they teach.

Why not make it more fun for students? I never get it when teachers think they are police offers. Teachers should teach, not the police.

2. The More You Learn, The Less You Know

During my time in college, I learned mostly from professors, books, and my fellow students. As a business student, you often work together on assignments. And that’s how I learned the most useful things I know.

But the funny thing was that every year I felt like I had fewer answers to everything.

“Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.” ― Voltaire

That’s the beauty of education. Idiots think they know everything. But the more you learn, the less certain you are of things.

Some people go to college and they become even bigger idiots because they think they have a degree.

But going to college has NOTHING to do with being smart. We’re all in the same boat: We know nothing.

3. “Thinking” Is A Skill

I would say that I’ve forgotten about 95% of the stuff I learned. But I don’t care.

I don’t get why people HAVE to study something they enjoy. If you think that you should only study subjects that you love, you’re completely missing the point of college.

The most valuable thing you learn in college is the ability to think.

As long as you study SOMETHING, you train your brain to think. And that’s priceless. Thomas Edison put it best:

“Five percent of the people think; ten percent of the people think they think; and the other eighty-five percent would rather die than think.”

We live in a world where resourceful people thrive. How do you become resourceful? Exercise that brain of yours. Learn how to think.

4. Finishing Something Is HARD

College was hard. People who say they went through college with ease are full of shit.

It’s not easy to learn full time for at least 4 years. And teachers often try to make it hard on you as well. And they should.

In college, you learn that finishing something is hard—it takes real blood, sweat, and tears.

But you know what? Once you finish something that you started, you’ll be proud of yourself.

5. Experience Is Never A Waste Of Time Or Money

People often regret that they chose a wrong degree. Or sometimes you feel like you wasted your time and money on education that you didn’t pursue further with a career in that direction.

But how else do you expect to know yourself? Everything you do in life is an experiment.

If something doesn’t work out, just try something else. Maybe you switched majors, classes, or even degrees. So what? As long as you don’t give up it’s all good.

“All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

6. There Are People Who Are Drastically Different From You

When you grow up in one area, you think that’s life. You are exposed to the same people, same opinions, thoughts, culture, etc.

That’s a very limited life.

But once you go to college, you often meet people from different countries, with different ideas and cultures.

That’s a great way to learn about people and the world. In a way, it’s like traveling the world. But when you go to college, the world comes to you.

During my time in college, I worked with people from South-Africa, China, South-Korea, Romania, Germany, America, Canada, Brazil, India. That’s what I can recall. I was probably exposed to even more people from different countries.

It gives you a better perspective of the world and the people who live in it. One thing you’ll learn is that, in a way, we’re all the same — and yet, we’re so different.

That’s not only the beauty of college but also of life.

So, if you have the chance; go to college. If not; try to learn in a different way.

As I said, I don’t know much, but there’s one thing I’m confident about: Education never ends. So whether you’re in college or not, just keep on keep on learning.

How Running Changed My Life

Running has truly changed my life. I never thought that because I never understood running as a form of exercise.

When physical harm is looming, our natural response is to run. It’s human nature — we either fight or flee. Most of us choose to flee— I would surely run if a wild animal would charge at me. But I also found that our fear mechanism kicks in when we face emotional challenges.

During the first two weeks this year, my grandmother passed away, I broke up with my girlfriend, and I started to dislike my job in London because of office politics. Everything seemed to work against me.

My life felt stuck. So I decided to run. It was my natural response. I just wanted to getaway. I laced my shoes and started running — by the time I came back, I felt tired and energized at the same time. I knew I was on to something.

I’ve always exercised since I was little. I played basketball through high school. In my adult years, I’ve practiced different sports — I tried kickboxing, tennis, squash. But I never got excited about those things.

So I did what most people do when they don’t want to get fat — go to the gym. In a way, going to the gym is lazy. You hop in your car, do some light to moderate exercise while you have a chat with a friend or someone you know from the gym. I’ve been doing that for the past ten years for 2 or 3 times a week.

Once in a while, I would get hyped about running. However, I always picked up running for the wrong reasons. I used running as a reason to buy new Nike’s and compression clothes. Or I decided to run to lose weight or become more healthy.

Other times, I went for a run on Sunday morning to get rid of the alcohol from the previous night out. My running stints never lasted longer than 2–3 weeks. I would lose interest in running. I just didn’t understand it.
Why would anyone go through the pain of running? Especially when the weather is bad. Who does that? I’d rather go to the gym with my friends, talk, and pick up some weights.

But I found that pain is precisely the reason I started to run again. When my life was not what I wanted it to be, I was upset. I felt like punching a stranger on the subway. But instead of getting busted by a British police officer, I decided to run when I arrived home one day after work.
It was a cold January day, and I only ran for 3 miles in a time that I am too ashamed to mention. But my time is not what’s important — during that run I finally got it.

My stamina was synonymous with my life at the time — it was bad, but I knew it would be better if I kept running. If I would fight against the wind, rain, cold, and my thoughts of giving up, I would eventually improve my stamina and be a better runner.

My life has improved at the same rate that my running pace and stamina has improved. But running has the most impact on my productivity, mood, creativity, and overall livelihood. Scientific research backs all of this.

Dr. John Ratey wrote a book about the effect of exercise on our brain, called Spark. He says:

“Cognitive flexibility is an important executive function that reflects our ability to shift thinking and to produce a steady flow of creative thoughts and answers as opposed to a regurgitation of the usual responses. The trait correlates with high-performance levels in intellectually demanding jobs. So if you have an important afternoon brainstorming session scheduled, going for a short, intense run during lunchtime is a smart idea.”

Every time life became difficult I would give up. When I wanted to travel the world after college, I decided that I did not have money — so I told myself I should save money. Years passed, and that round-the-world trip never happened — I was scared to be away from home for a long time.

Now, when life is difficult, my response is different — I love the pain and struggle instead of shy away from it. I owe this to running.
And the best thing about running is that is easy to start. You just go. You decide when, where, and how fast.

To me, running is exactly like life. It’s hard, you do not always want to do it, summers are better than winters, and you feel better when you have new shoes. But it’s worth it. After the pain comes happiness, both in life and in running. That’s why my life is moving forward again — I’ve never stopped running for a day. You should try it too.

If keyboards could talk……

Quite a mind boggling and thought provoking heading !!!! Isn’t it ? A famous quote says that actions speak louder than words but have you ever imagined in your weirdest dreams that how miraculously our life would be turned upside down if a simple electronic device like keyboard ,could talk . There are plenty of thoughts hovered over my mind as to how amazingly absurd this world would be if all our unspoken thoughts actually get heard by everyone around !! The only part in computer system which is capable of conveying our thoughts to ever complicated wired machine’s brain by sending our messages in the form in the form of linked words would create an interesting havoc if its buttons would actually speak up the words being pressed upon them !! Thinking of funniest consequence which comes to mind is the one when in working place of 10-20 employees typing together on the respective keyboards eventually turning it all into a remarkable fish market filled with the voices of their talking keyboards!!! Another most important use of these keyboards is found almost everywhere in the era of booming social social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter and more . Where people are spending almost of half of their live typing their thoughts on the computers spreading it around the world !

Keyboards are probably the best secret keepers the world has to offer because you can express exactly what you are thinking and feeling , unless you save the document , no one will know what you were saying , keyboards could also tell us what kind of lives we live. so, I stick to typing out how I feel.

Teacher's Day

The pillar of the student, the second parent of any child. Why exactly do we celebrate teacher’s day? Is it that much essential? What role it actually play in our lives?

“A teacher effects eternity; they can never tell where their influence stops.”

Well said by- Henry Adams.

The most important people in any person’s life is the one who trained you, guide you and mentor you. When a human came in to this life in this world his/her parents are the first most important people who love them and care for them. But a child cannot be live with their parents always. It is the rule of this era one should have to go outside and face the world.

Have you ever think why a child should go to school? Is his/her parents are not enough to conquer them? Absolutely not, The level to understanding that a child shared with their parents is very different which no one can attain. But at some point of time parents are quite emotional for their child, their intake are always focused on the fact that their child should resemble them. but this world, maturity, functioning of the creator doesn’t work like this. while on the other hand teacher is like a government even if we are mature enough to handle everything still there are certain decisions of which we are not at all familiar of. The mind of the teacher is like an Internet it contains lot of information and it can also give you lot of knowledge. let me share a story for that: “Once upon a time a 6 year old child got the information about the mobile phone and he really want to know more about it. As a student he is very bright and focused for his studies but also want to understand why really we need to have a mobile phone. so firstly he contacted his parents and asked them about the mobile phones. Since his parents is already using the one they show him and explain how it actually works. it really fascinate him and he requested his parents to buy them. On the other hand when he asked the same with his teacher she give him the same definition that his parents give but with a little twist, she strictly tell him to not buy for himself because of his age. It eventually angry the child and he decided he will anyhow get a mobile phone for himself and make his teacher proven wrong. And as a result he gets addicted to it, always playing games in the phone, his academic gets drastically decrease.”

Now you understand, what is the actual meaning of teacher. They not only emotionally connected with you they are also mentally connected with you. If this person is really that much important why doesn’t we hate teacher’s so much…..funny but true.

The main reason that a person is called as a teacher is because of her students and her teaching’s. You know what, may be any teacher is just like a human being but still there are some importance that teacher have that nobody have. Do you know what is it? The patience and learning they shared to the children. Teacher’s are the only person who teach you guide you without any reason of profit their only focus is to give best knowledge to you.

So dont you think we need to give the fullest of respect to the most respected person.

Data Management

Data management is the process of absorbing, storing, organising, and managing an organization’s data. Effective data management is a critical component of implementing IT systems that operate business applications and offer analytical information to enable corporate executives, business managers, and other end users to drive operational decision-making and strategic planning. The data management process ensures that data in business systems is correct, available, and accessible. The majority of the needed work is performed by IT and data management teams, while business users are involved in some aspects of the process. This thorough reference explains what it is and offers information on the various fields it encompasses.

History and Evolution

The early blooming of data management was primarily driven by IT experts who concentrated on tackling the problem of garbage in, garbage out in the earliest computers after discovering that the machines drew incorrect conclusions due to erroneous or inadequate data. Beginning in the 1960s, industry groups and professional organisations pushed optimal data management practises, particularly in terms of professional training and data quality criteria. That decade also saw the introduction of mainframe-based hierarchical databases.

The data warehouse concept was created in the late 1980s, and early adopters started using them in the mid-1990s. Relational software was the dominating technology in the early 2000s, with a virtual monopoly on database deployments. Organizations now have a wider range of data management options because of the emergence of big data and NoSQL alternatives.

Benefits of data management

By increasing operational performance and allowing improved decision-making, a well-executed data management strategy may help firms acquire potential competitive advantages over their business rivals. Organizations with well-managed data may also become more flexible, allowing them to more rapidly detect market trends and seize new business possibilities.

Effective data management may also assist businesses in avoiding data breaches, data privacy issues, and regulatory compliance difficulties that might harm their brand, add unanticipated expenses, and put them in legal trouble. Finally, the most significant benefit that a sound data management strategy can give is improved company performance.

Importance of data management

Data is increasingly being viewed as a corporate asset that can be utilised to make better business choices, enhance marketing efforts, streamline operations, and save expenses, all with the objective of boosting revenue and profits. However, a lack of appropriate data management may leave businesses with incompatible data silos, inconsistent data sets, and data quality issues, limiting their capacity to operate business intelligence (BI) and analytics applications — or, worse, leading to erroneous conclusions. As organisations are subjected to a growing number of regulatory compliance obligations, including data privacy and protection legislation such as GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act, data management has become increasingly important. Furthermore, organisations are gathering ever-increasing amounts of data and a broader range of data kinds, both of which are trademarks of the big data platforms that many have implemented. Without proper data management, such settings may become cumbersome and difficult to traverse.

Tasks and duties in data management

The data management process necessitates a wide range of activities, responsibilities, and abilities. Individual workers in tiny firms with less resources may take on several responsibilities. Data management professionals, in general, include data architects, data modellers, database administrators (DBAs), database developers, data quality analysts and engineers, data integration developers, data governance managers, data stewards, and data engineers, who collaborate with analytics teams to build data pipelines and prepare data for analysis.

Data scientists and other data analysts may also undertake certain data management activities on their own, particularly in large data systems containing raw data that must be filtered and processed for specific applications. Similarly, application developers frequently assist in the deployment and management of big data environments, which necessitate the acquisition of new skills in comparison to relational database systems. As a result, businesses may need to acquire new employees or retrain established DBAs in order to fulfil their big data management requirements.
