“Boys don’t cry”

Ever heard a mom telling their young boy to “stop crying like a girl”. The mother would just be trying to make the boy stop crying. But, don’t you think a better approach to making the child stop crying would be listening to the problem and saying it will be fine.

Practices like these in our society have made men think that they have to act strong. Masculinity is considered strong and being feminine is weak.

What we forget in all this is that men just like women have emotions. but, they are forced to hide these feelings because then they won’t be considered “man enough”. Showing emotions is not a sign of weakness but that is how our society sees it.

“men are strong”

“women are weak”

A lot of the time guys feel pressured to act a certain way because of our society. They feel if they don’t act man enough they will be bullied. A lot of guys say things like, “why are you acting like a girl” or, “Stop acting gay” to the sensitive guys.

So, to avoid that a lot of men act bad to “fit in” even if they aren’t like that in real life. It is considered “cool” to make sexist, racist, anti-feminist jokes because that is how their friends are going to accept them.

Is being called a girl or gay something to take offense for?

Acknowledging emotions does not make people “weak”.

Men who make fun of other men for being sensitive are the men who follow toxic masculinity. They are the ones that need to change their mentality.

Did you know that suicide rates in men are higher than in women?

This mainly happens because men are forced to act strong even when they are struggling. Whereas, women tend to communicate their problems with their friends, family or even take help from a therapist.  But, when it comes to men they think they have to be strong and masculine. So, when they struggle they tend to think that there is no way out of their situation.

If you are a man reading this. You don’t have to pretend to be strong. It is fine to struggle. Every human being has ups and downs in their life.

Something that will help you deal with those ups and downs is talking to people. Admit you have an issue, sometimes talking to people about problems is the only solution needed.

We as a society need to encourage men to open up. Parents need to start talking to their sons as much as they talk to their daughters. If you have a brother, make sure you talk to him and let him know you are there for him. Getting boys to open up from an early age is really important.

We need to change the very idea of being strong. Being strong means accepting who you are, accepting your vulnerability, not being afraid to show your emotions, and standing up for what you believe in.

Can working long hour affects our heart ?

“Working long hours is a major risk factor for heart-related ailments, almost equivalent to having diabetes and hypertension together,” said a doctor

In May 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) found that long working hours have been increasing deaths from heart disease and stroke. In the pandemic, this has become a more pressing issue, as working from home has caused people to spend long hours in front of their computer screens. The report by WHO and ILO found that this work-related burden is particularly significant in men.  According to Dr Kumar Narayanan, consultant cardiac electrophysiologist at Medicover Hospitals Hyderabad, the link between mental stress and heart disease is well established. “Nowadays, not only are working hours excessively long, but stress at work has escalated exponentially. Work timings are also often unhealthy, extending into odd hours as people work across time zones in a globally-linked world. All this leads to harmful stress responses in the body, along with unhealthy diet, sedentariness, smoking and inadequate sleep.”
Weighing his thoughts on this, Dr P C Mondal, a senior consultant intervention cardiologist and HOD at Kolkata’s Apollo-Gleneagles Hospital said while patients with pre-existing cardiovascular diseases (especially heart failure) and those with coronary risk factors (diabetes, obesity) are at an increased risk of severe disease and mortality from COVID-19(especially older patients), there may also be the development of new cardiovascular implications (including cardiomyopathy/myocarditis/Acute Coronary Syndromes) in patients without pre-existing cardiovascular diseases.

What are the things that one needs to know –

1. Avoiding a diet rich in fats, salt, low fiber, junk and fast foods.
2. Exercising more.
3. Lowering the consumption of tobacco, or completely stopping it.

“Psychosocial stress includes job-related stress due to long working hours, persistent stress, high work demands, and job insecurity,” he said, adding: “All these factors over a period of 25 years lead to the same level of risk of heart attacks as people who smoke and do not exercise.”
Summing it up, Dr Ulhas M Pandurangi, chief of division of cardiac electrophysiology and pacing at Arrhythmia-Heart Failure Academy, Chennai, noted: “Stress can tax the heart dearly. It is clear — working long hours is a major risk factor for heart-related ailments, almost equivalent to having diabetes and hypertension together.”

Foods which are good for a healthy heart –

1. Eat fish high in omega-3s such as salmon, tuna etc
2. Healthy nuts like almonds or walnuts
3. Berries containing phytonutrients such as blueberries, strawberries etc
4. Oats are the comfort food nutrient powerhouse.
5. Fruits like orange and papaya.
6.  Dark chocolates
7. Legumes
8. Vegetables like spinach, broccoli etc.

Java vs JavaScript

Java:

Developed by Sun Microsystems, Java is a class-based programming language. It is a standalone language that is executed in JVM( Java Virtual Machine) that allows Java programs to run on any platform.
Java with its secured environment and great compatibility has emerged as one of the best programming languages. The language is favored by enterprises too. More than 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies use Java for building applications and back end systems. This is why large enterprises these days hire Java developer for creating custom-tailored web applications.

JavaScript:

JavaScript is an interpreted high-level programming language that helps to make web applications more interactive and responsive. According to Stack Overflow’s 2018 Developer Survey, JavaScript is the most popular language among developers for the sixth year in a row.
Unlike Java, JavaScript is simple to learn. That’s why it is used everywhere for web development. JavaScript can easily be used with other languages within different types of web applications.
What’s similar between Java and JavaScript?
Before you proceed further to read more on Java vs JavaScript, let’s have a quick look at the major similarities shared by the two

Java vs JavaScript: What’s the Difference?

Java is an Object-Oriented Programming language that is platform-independent because it gets executed in the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). On the other hand, JavaScript is an object-oriented scripting language that helps to create dynamic HTML pages. Java vs JavaScript has become a hot topic of discussion these days.
Purpose
While Java is used for all server-side development, JavaScript is primarily used for writing client-side scripts for tasks such as JS validation and interactivity.
Applications run differently
When we talk about Java vs JavaScript, then it’s important to know how these applications run. The applications created either using Java or JavaScript run entirely differently. Java develops applications that can run in a browser or virtual machine whereas applications made using JavaScript can run on a browser only.
Usability
Java applications are used in a number of places which include, Android applications, creation of the desktop applications, development of banking and financial apps. However, the use of JavaScript is limited to making web apps more interactive and creative. It also renders help in creating animations in HTML.
Compiled vs Interpreted
Java is a compiling language whereas JavaScript is an interpreted scripting language. These two languages run differently. While Java code is compiled into bytecode and run on Java Virtual Machine, whereas JavaScript is interpreted directly by a browser in the syntax in which the code has been written.
Key benefits of using Java
Java is a general-purpose programming language that is object-based and class-based. It is a high-level language that supports multi-threading. Java continues to deliver its prominent services in the field of software development. Major advantages that Java offers to the users include,
Platform-independent
One of the most important features of Java is that it is a platform-independent language. All Java programs can be compiled independently of the platform. The programs are compiled in the bytecode thus allowing the programs to run on any platform that has a JVM installed in it. You can use Java to create programs that can run across desktops, mobiles, and embedded systems.
Multi-Threading
Java is an object-oriented programming language that can perform several tasks at the same time. As it supports multi threading so Java has the capability to perform several tasks simultaneously.
Robust and Secure
Java offers a secured environment for the development of applications. It prevents the attack of viruses and keeps a check on the misuse of resources. It implements exception handling to remove errors and to reduce the risk of crashing.
Dynamic and Extensible
Java is a dynamic language. All the classes, objects, methods and libraries in Java are dynamically linked in Java. This extensible language supports various functions that are written in other languages such as C and C++.

Eve teasing: A Judicial Perspective

The verbal or physical abuse or harassment of women in public places such as streets, public transit, parks, and other places where people gather, as well as making lewd gestures like winking, whistling, or staring is defined as eve teasing.

Haryana government recently conducted a survey on eve teasing which highlights that the maximum reports related to eve teasing occurs when females return or travel to schools, college and their respective workplace. However, a different study on eve-teasing suggests that only 10% of such cases are reported in the police station. The major reason of such less reporting is that our society doesn’t pay head to such incidents and ignore the victim by saying ‘they just touched or winked at you. What’s the harm in it? They didn’t commit any severe offences.’

But well they did and it’s high time that women as well as the society should be aware of the legal rights relating to eve-teasing so that innocent victims do not commit suicide or are murdered because as seen in various studies such incidents happen when harassment went unreported.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND LIABILITIES WITH REGARD TO EVE TEASING

  • The apex court of India ‘the supreme court’ when dealing with Vishakha vs state of Rajasthan provided us with guidelines relating to the act amounting to sexual harassment which includes the following:-

1. Undesired sexually determined behavior, either directly or indirectly

2. any type of bodily contact or advances

3. any demand or request for sexual favors

4. statements that are sexually oriented

5. any sexually harassing physical, verbal, or nonverbal activity, such as showing pornography or making obscene jokes.

Anyone who is experiencing such acts or witnessing someone who is suffering the above-mentioned rules amounting to sexual harassment can submit a complaint in the court or police station.

  • Furthermore, eve teasing also includes stalking which means An individual’s repeated harassment or threatening behavior, such as following a person, showing up at their home or workplace, making harassing phone calls, leaving written messages or items, or vandalizing their property is now included in the Indian law under Section 354D of Indian penal code which provides imprisonment to the stalker up to 3 years.

Hence, The persistent, unwelcome involvement of one person with another, for any reason, can be declared illegal and punishable if the behavior causes a person to fear violence or anguish, or disrupts their mental peace.

  • Indian penal code, 1860 provides few sections which deals with the protection of women’s dignity against the behavior that degrades women’s dignity which are as follows:-

SECTION 294 OF IPC

Under section 294 of ipc, If someone conducts any obscene activities in a public area, or sings, recites, or utters any indecent song or lyrics in a public place, or even a spot close to a social setting which annoys the other will be punished with imprisonment upto 3 months, fine or both  under this act. This section is not gender specific so anyone might be a victim or perpetrator.

SECTION 509 OF IPC

this section is known as eve-teasing section which states that anybody who has the intent to insult a woman’s modesty by uttering any phrase, producing any sound, gesture, or displaying any object with the intent that such gesture or words are heard by the woman or intrudes upon her seclusion will  be penalised with a year in prison or a fine.

SECTION 292 OF IPC

Section 292 deals with the act of showing obscene or pornographic images, booklets to a female will be fined Rs. 2000 and sentenced to two years in prison. Furthermore, if the offender repeated this offence, he will be sentenced to up to five years in prison and a fine of Rs. 5000.

SECTION 354 OF IPC

Under this section, If a person knowingly assaults or uses illegal force against a woman in order to offend her modesty, will be imprisoned minimum for 1 year but can extend up to 5 years and fine. The subparts of this section are as follows:-

  1. SECTION 354A

Sexual harassment is now an explicit offence under Section 354A of the Indian Penal Code, owing to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013.

This act increased the imprisonment upto 3 years and fine and both of any offender who passes any derogatory remarks or makes obscene gestures towards a female thus, invading her privacy.

2. SECTION 354B

This section deals with disrobing which states that Any individual who uses unlawful force against a woman with the intent of disrobing her or forcing her to be naked is responsible under this provision. The punishment given to the offender will be minimum of 3 years but upto 7 years is acceptable.

3. SECTION 354C

It deals with the act of voyeurism which simply means sexual fascination of watching other people participate in sexual behaviors such as undressing, sexual intercourse, or other actions that are normally considered private will be held liable minimum for 1 year but can extend to 3 years and fine.

  • Moreover, Eve-teasing is deemed unconstitutional since it infringes on a person’s right to privacy by prying into his or her private life. thus, breaching fundamental right to life provided by our indian constitution( Article 21)  because it undermines a woman’s dignity as well as her self-respect.

Thus, there is an urgent need to address this rapidly rising problem and it can only be done by realizing how dangerous and evil ‘eve teasing’ can be if it is not stopped at an early age and what ill effects it leaves on the person experiencing it. The society mainly females should be aware of the rights and liabilities relating to eve teasing so that they can stand up against it even if the society doesn’t support them and bring a change in this society.

Financing Decisions

Financing decisions are concerned with the amount of finance to be raised from various long-term sources of funds like, equity shares, preference shares, debentures, bank loans etc and its impact on the capital structure of the organisation.

It is one of the three main decisions of Financial Management – Investment decisions, Financing decisions and Dividend decisions.

Factors affecting financing decisions

While making financing decisions, one must focus on the composition of funds from various long-term sources. These decisions involve:

  1. Decision whether or not to use a combination of ownership and borrowed funds.
  2. Determining the ratio in which ownership and borrowed funds should be kept.

A firm should have an appropriate mix of debt as well as equity.

  • The disadvantage of having Debt is that it involves Financial Risk which is the risk of default on payment or interest on borrowed funds and the repayment of principle amount
  • However, tax benefit on interest payments of the debt reduces its cost, making it cheaper than equity.
  • In order to avail the benefits of debt wisely, the cost of debt should be less than the rate of return on the capital.
  • Shareholders’ funds have no fixed commitment in the aspects of repayment of capital or payment of returns.

Factors to be considered to make financing and capital structure decisions are listed below-

  1. Interest/dividend pay-out: Debt involves compulsory interest payments whereas there is no compulsion to pay dividend to equity shareholders. However, the company should also keep its dividend policy in mind, in case they prefer paying dividends in order to retain their shareholders.
  2. Tax deductibility– Interest payments are tax deductible which reduces its overall cost.
  3. Dilution of control– In case the existing shareholders want to retain the complete control of business then finance can be raised through borrowed funds or preference shares but when they are ready for dilution of control over business, equity shares can be used for raising finance.
  4. Risk and floatation costs: More risk is associated with borrowed funds as compared to owner’s fund as interest is paid on it and it is also repaid after a fixed period of time or on expiry of its tenure. The cost involved in issuing securities such as broker’s commission, underwriter’s fees, expenses on prospectus etc. Is called flotation cost. Higher the flotation cost, less attractive is the source of finance.
  5. Feasibility & Cash Flow position: In case the cash flow position of a company is good enough then it can easily use borrowed funds.
  6. Payment schedule: In case the company wants to go for debt, then the payment schedule, tenure and total costs (principal+interest) should be analysed and compared with other options. Longer the schedule, greater the interest so in case the schedule is too long, the terms should be modified or other financing options can be considered.

Different options and compositions of debt and shareholder’s fund can be analysed to find the one with the lowest weighted average cost (WACC). This way the company enjoys the tax benefit advantage of debt and non-compulsion of dividend payments advantage of equity.

However, it is important to analyse costs after factoring in the time value of money so the decision-maker gets a realistic picture of the cost of capital, on the basis of which, informed decisions can be made.

DO PERFECT PEOPLE EXIST?

BY: VAIBHAVI MENON

“Learn to love your insecurities.” A common definition of a perfect person is someone who looks good, has good economic stability and looks happy. Every person has a mental image of what a perfect life, face, body looks like and this varies from person to person. While one would want to look skinny the other would want to be curvy. therefore everyone’s idea of a perfect person is different. This leads to insecurities. The need of looking in some manner and being content in only that way. Often when we see celebrities posting on their social media accounts insecurities tend to build up because of how “perfect” they look but in reality, most don’t look like what they portray to be which isn’t a bad thing but the people viewing it take it in a negative manner and end up wanting to change themselves as well.

these pictures take hours to photoshop to make it look presentable and picture perfect but nobody ever wakes up looking amazing. We all have our bed head, flaky skin, eye bags which is a normal part of our body and it should be appreciated. People need to learn to love these insecurities and that’s when they get a glowup mentally and understand that a perfect person is someone who loves themselves for who they are rather than wanting to be a alternative version which in the end could bring them down. It’s not a easy thing to do but one step a day can make a huge difference. Some ways which could help you grow up mentally would be to observe your surroundings and the people you surround yourselves with because they play a huge role in this and if you ever need a change, do not hesitate to give it up because in the end it’s your happiness that actually matters. An example for this could be Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty. She doesn’t have a perfect body(according to present beauty standards) yet she considered the goddess of beauty. that shows that our physical appearance has nothing to do with how perfect we are, its our mentality that actually defines who we are as a person. There should be no definition given to perfect because in the end we all are very different from each other (except identical twins). A perfect man is a dead man. If you’re alive you’ll have to constantly learn and adapt. Make mistakes , stumble , fall and get up . There’s no such thing as perfect . That’s not life , that’s momentary . You can achieve perfection for moments or in your work but there are so many factors when it comes to humans which are out of our control. It is like swimming , you get better as much you practice . When water flows in river it is fresh , when it stops it gets infected . Our body is composed of so many cells and organs which function as per their natural mechanisms . When we can’t even control our organs how could we be perfect ? Striving for perfection is a great quest though but the universe is motion , when one becomes static , it’s death .

I would like to conclude this by saying you are loved and insecurities are unique parts of yourself that is supposed to appreciated and loved rather than looked down upon

Lost Souls : Reviewed

A sequel to the brilliant thriller “Reviver” by Seth Patrick, Lost Souls picks up where it left off with a bang. It develops on the established conflict between the revivers and the antilifers in way that is not expected. After the clash between Jonah Miller the best reviver and the antagonist, Jonah thinks the clash is finally over but he’s soon proven wrong by a series of events. The Afterlifers have nearly doubled their efforts to stop revival with better funding and a stronger resolve, they’ve started to play to the publics fears and reel them in.

After the ordeal faced in the last novel thinking everything is dandy, Jonah gets back to his job as a forensic reviver. He talks to the recently deceased to get some answers and bring some closure to the ones they left behind. Jonah is called up for a revival that doesn’t go as planned. The victim seems to be the latest target of a serial killer, the mystery still remains as Jonah is not allowed to proceed with the revival as the afterlifers get their hands on the case and do everything in their hands to stop the revival. He begins to think if it’s the time to retire from the FRS and get into private revival. Jonah thinks about the mutilated series of corpses and has a feeling that everything’s not as it seems.

Annabel Harker is investigating Michael Andreas and trying to balance her new relationship with Jonah. She comes across some more secrets about Andreas and baseline. Jonah and Annabel are drifting apart due to her giving more importance to finding Andreas and less time to their own lives, Jonah the ever hopeful keeps trying to hold on but finds himself hurting more and more. Despite their differences they have to come together to each others aid when Michael Andreas seemingly back from the dead announces his arrival to the world. Jonah knows something is wrong, he knows Andreas is not who he claims to be. Jonah, Never and Annabel go on the run in an attempt to stay safe and find all they can about Andreas.

The trio of Jonah, Annabel and Never start to dig deeper even when on the run and come face to face with a series of revelations that point to an incoming apocalypse. They soon find out the depth to which Andreas and the afterlifers are rooted to. This makes it difficult for them to trust anyone but themselves, because one mistake could end up being their last. Having to deal with such situations on top of being practically marked for death makes them question the science and dive into the myths. The saying knowledge is power cannot be any more perfect, knowledge of what they are dealing with will be the tool they need in the fight. After countless hours of research they find out the true motives and identity of the entity masquerading as Michael Andreas. They have to fight to save the world.

In conclusion the thrilling novel “Lost Souls” lives up to its predecessor and ramps up the intrigue and action in the novel. Sure to keep you from putting the book down is its complex story that is sure to make you think. The character development from the first novel is amazing, it keeps the qualities that define the character and adds to it. The novel sets up the final part with a warning to our heroes and an incentive for the readers. For me this novel was a blast and would heartily recommend anyone fond of a good thriller. So, stay tuned for my review on the final part of this trilogy.

Few street dishes like kathi rolls, daulat ki chaat, chhole bhature and misal pav are quite famous. When it comes to street food, India tops the charts.

The biggest reason that we all loves to eat street food is that it’s way more economical or cheap than the food of Restaurants/Hotels. Street Food is very economical for the middle-class people and that’s why the major chunk of that class prefers street food the most.

Indian street food has a long history. On the streets of Delhi, you can visit kebab vendors who used to serve the Mughal kings. In Kolkata, you’ll find fusion street food that was created with British customers in mind during colonial times.

According to a 2007 study from the Food and Agriculture Organization, 2.5 billion people eat street food every day. A majority of middle-income consumers rely on the quick access and cheap service of street food for daily nutrition and job opportunities, especially in developing countries.

Beating Mumbai, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, and New Delhi, Kolkata has been deemed as the best destination for a staggering variety of street food, according to the survey ‘Taste of Travel’ mentioned in a report in The Times of India.

The fast food industry in India has evolved with the changing lifestyles of the young Indian population.[citation needed] The variety of gastronomic preferences across the regions, hereditary or acquired, has brought about different modules across the country.

Many of the traditional dishes have been adapted to suit the emerging fast food outlets. The basic adaptation is to decrease the processing and serving time. For example, the typical meal which called for being served by an ever-alert attendant is now offered as a Mini-Meal across the counter. In its traditional version, a plate or a banana leaf was first laid down on the floor or table. Several helpers then waited on the diner, doling out different dishes and refilling as they got over in the plate.

In the fast-food version, a plate already arranged with a variety of cooked vegetables and curries along with a fixed quantity of rice and Indian flatbreads is handed out across the counter against a prepaid coupon. The curries and breads vary depending on the region and local preferences. The higher priced ones may add a sweet to the combination. Refills are generally not offered.

It is common to serve different cuisines at different counters within the same premises. Presence of a large vegetarian population, who eschew non-vegetarian food, has given rise to outlets which exclusively serve vegetarian fast food. Also, different variety of food may be served depending on the times of the day. Beverages such coffee, tea, soft drinks and fruit juices may also be served in such outlets. Some outlets may additionally have specially designed counters for ice-cream, chaats etc.

IS LEARNING A DIFFICULT PROCESS

When it comes to the topic of learning or studies, there arises various queries and comments. Is learning that difficult or a boresome work. Before we blame our Education system or institutes,we need to realise some actual factors. Learning is not a hard job, in fact learning is a delight if you accept it as a friend. It’s just a form of entertainment from which you get to know more. Education is the thing which makes a person complete and everyone must have access to it. Often the process is misunderstood, its aim is  to learn and not merely to crack a exam or to earn a degree. In this case parents and students get worried and anxious about getting into various institutes. They believe that the only way to access it is by joining an institute and spend money on it. It is a misconception, truth is where you study doesn’t matter but how you study is important. The light is within you,the interest to learn new things will help you access it. It’s only lack of attentiveness and sometimes parent’s pressure by which students ends up in coaching centres. A person doesn’t need to go for a special coaching if he has self control and willingness to achieve his goal. It’s just needs a little effort. The process doesn’t eat much of your time but it needs your interest and concentration.

To make the learning process easier and effective one needs to grow interest which can be achieved by active form of learning.

  1. While you are learning a topic first you need to give a thorough reading so that you can form an idea.
  2. You must raise questions and try to explain it yourself. While searching for the answer you get to know more about the topic further you will grow interest in the field.
  3. To have better understanding one needs to explain the concept to other person. You should make sure that you can answer to their queries and make the concept simpler.
  4. The next thing one needs to do is to write down the concept in own words. This makes sure that you never forget the concept.

Apart form these there must be a regular practice. Inorder to follow these, one must have self discipline. If you are able to work in streamlined manner with full dedication you’ll definitely succeed in the process.Once you decide what you want, you need to focus on it without falling for any sort of distraction and must work hard to reach it. Discipline is the important factor for this, if one can practice it there is no need for the person to relay on other and can function independently.

Tennessee Williams as a Southern Writer

Tennessee Williams

Tennessee Williams is an American playwright hailing from the southern state of Mississippi. For him, writing was an outlet through which he explored the mores of Southern life and the eccentricities and complexities of his own family. His most notable works include The Glass Menagerie (1944) which was considered to be a turning point in his career, A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955) both of which received Pulitzers, Summer and Smoke (1948), Orpheus Descending (1957) etc. Although he wrote throughout his life, his subsequent works never achieved the high acclaim of his earlier works.

Williams as a Southern writer shared a love-hate relationship with the south which provided for dramatic conflicts and excitements. Most of his work reflected traditional topics like agrarianism vs urbanism, New South vs antebellum South, chevalier vs the upstart and so on. For example, his play The Streetcar Named Desire represents the fallen aristocracy with the ethnic denizens a new industrial order, and his play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof represents the different family dynamics of the neo-rich. He drew upon the full resources of language to convey their pictures of culture based on moral absolutes. His characters are portrayed in a way in which they are unable to escape the burdens of their regional histories. Most often, the weight of the southern history the power of racial and social divisions, his rituals and taboos often make self-determination and moral choice unachievable for the characters. In his world, any defiance of this code results in personal destruction.

One of Williams’ most prominent southern trait is the very theatrical display of emotions, dysfunctional characters and unalterable sociological circumstances. He deconstructs the magical appeal of the southern culture and portrays the tension between their dream of an idyllic life and the reality of living it. He also provides constant allusions to plantations like Belle Reve in The Streetcar Named Desire. He also adheres to certain stereotypes of small-town life like gossipy neighbours, fear of scandal, aristocratic families who are deferentially treated by the rest of the community etc.

The usual southern hero is usually almost like an epic figure who embodies the ideals of the society and performs chivalric behaviour which is distinctly different from northern protagonists. A typical southern hero is the leader of men, honest, compassionate, a defender of the faith. They are usually heterosexual, while being protective of the women. But no such southern character exists in Williams’ work. But instead of abandoning the concept of a hero, he has adapted it to the world which has been hopelessly corrupted. He questions the paternalistic order of old South, the enslavement of the black men, the subjugation of the female, the corrupting power of wealth, and the obsession with keeping up appearances. He instead shows guilt caused by the acknowledgement of one sexuality, and the guilt of black subjugation in an antebellum society. Williams attributes perversion and distortions of human behavior to the rigid gender stereotypes that he uncovers in the southern landscape. Certain characters like Brick, who is Blanche’s husband, are unable to cope with the extreme need for masculinity in men. He also questions hypocrisy of a society that denies a woman’s sexuality. Although he does cling to prevailing and romantic point of view past offered luxury and that the present forces the individual to accept barest realities.

“Williams understands human needs and aspirations and is supremely aware of the artist’s role in illuminating urgent personal and social issues; yet his consistent exposure of hypocrisy and his off-beat is reverent sense of humor never hides his deep compassion for those who fear the truth.”

-Kimball King

On one hand, he appreciates the elegance of the past, while on the other, he considers its denial of plurality sufficient cause for its demise. This reflects the love-hate relation that he shares with the South. He does not set out to explain the South and its effects on his characters, but he understands the South and presents characters as real people. He’s a regional writer who does not exploit the peculiarities of his region, and his exploration of the southern value system and conflicts has influenced several later dramatists. To quote Kimball King, “Williams understands human needs and aspirations and is supremely aware of the artist’s role in illuminating urgent personal and social issues; yet his consistent exposure of hypocrisy and his off-beat is reverent sense of humor never hides his deep compassion for those who fear the truth.”
