Breaking The Chain Of Patriarchy

We live in a society where our everyday behaviours, thoughts and emotions are shaped by the patriarchal notions, that prevails in the structure of the society. A woman at every stage of her life, in fact even before her birth, was being subjected to the evils of the male-dominated society. Patriarchy is unique, as this oppression is prevalent globally but still many of its aspects are undermined by the society or remain hidden in the structure such that it was noticed by none, even man of the women who are subjected to it fails to notice. In Indian society, in particular, the patriarchal norms and values are also a result of caste and religious inequalities that haunts the society. The most familiar example is the restriction of women entry into Sabarimala Temple in Kerala.

Normalisation of Patriarchy

The transmission of patriarchal values and ideas from one generation to another occurs in the socialisation process. Socialisation is the process of internalising the norms and ideologies of society. During and at the end of the process, the individuals, be it men or women adjusts to the group or the society from which they socialised, and learns to behave in a manner as approved by the society.  This socialisation process forms the basis for the normalisation of patriarchy in society. So, any attempt for a social change that is sustainable and egalitarian, should start from the socialisation process.

Primary and Secondary Socialisation

Socialisation occurs at two levels – primary and secondary.

In primary socialization, a child accepts and learns a set of norms, values, attitudes. For example, if a child sees his or her mother expressing hatred towards anybody, the child may think this behaviour is acceptable and could continue to practice hatred towards others.

In secondary socialization, the child learns what is the appropriate behaviour as a member of a smaller group in a larger society. Secondary socialization takes place outside the home. The children and adults learn how to act in an appropriate way in a situation. Schools require very different behaviour from the home, and children must act according to new rules.

The Chain of Transmission

So, the social institutions involving in the process of socialisation- both primary and secondary-should undergo a radical change from the present, in their approaches of socialising the new generation. Socialisation by any of these institutions is influenced by the patriarchal values of the society. Identifying the patriarchal values and norms in these institutions and replacing them with egalitarian value will break the transmission chain that helps in carry patriarchy across generations.

Let us see with some examples,

The key social institution in the primary socialisation process is the Family. The behaviour of the parents has a great influence on the child. In Indian society, there is a notion that males are breadwinners and women are homemakers, which itself is a result of the patriarchal norms. So, any child witnessing his/her father going to job and mother doing. Thus, the occupational segregation that we see in the labour market has its root in the Family. During this, the child ability to think critically about such a notion is not developed. Hence the child accepts this uncritically. This is a vicious cycle – the socialisation process leads to an unequal labour market, the unequal labour market again has its worst effects on the socialisation process.

Even the toys are given to the girls and boys during their childhood also has their effects. Often the boy child was given a bike or car toy, whereas the girl child was given a barbie doll-like toys. Over time this will give a superiority notion to the boy child, against the other gender as possessing a bike or car was often seen in terms of the status of a family in our society and is often associated with boys.

Schools are important secondary social institutions. The present arrangement in schools and colleges is such that the patriarchal notions went unnoticed and hence normalised. Even women who are subjected to this, often accept this as a legible one. Let us look at this with a simple example

Even today many school books of lower classes contain a picture of a family where the father was depicted as going to a job and the mother was doing household chores. Here comes the coincidence of the primary and secondary socialisation. As mentioned above a child sees the same kind of situation as in the book, in his/her home. This makes the child believes that this is how society operates.

But a big relief is that there are men and women who, over the years become aware of this pattern of socialisation and absolves themselves from the clutches of the patriarchal norms of the society and are being gender-neutral.

Breaking the chain

Redefining the socialisation process will be the solution.

Primary Socialisation: Make your child believe that the world is for everyone through your actions. A working male in a household, cooking for some time with his wife or helping her in her work will make a great difference to the child. This develops a sense in the child that no job is restricted to no one and no one is restricted from doing any job.

Secondary Socialisation: Making the words and pictures in the school books of lower classes gender-neutral, helps a lot. Say a picture of a family can be shown as a father and mother doing household chores together. This will make the child thinks that why the family shown in the book and his/her own family was totally different (in the case of a household where the father goes to job and mother do household chores).

The selection process in any kinds of posts in schools or colleges should not be based on gender. This makes every student (boy/girl/another gender) work together under the leadership of another student (boy/girl/another gender).

Thus, a permanent social change is in the hands of future generations.

I am not sure whether the youths and students are the future of India. But every youth will be a parent in the future. So, the responsibility of these youths/parents should be to make their child, being men or women, not to act as men or women.

What Should All Women Do In Their 20s?

You know how there are all these motivational quotes on Pinterest, and Instagram about your twenties being some of the most crucial years of your life? The years you have the most room to fail, make mistakes, try new things and grow? Well, maybe there is something to this whole theory. I mean, nobody’s twenties can be held against them, it doesn’t matter how many faux pas you end up making, as long as you learn from them.

1. Saving for your future:

This is one is quite evident, the pay gap isn’t close to being remedied anytime soon, and we can’t wait on that whole process to come to fruition to start thinking of our financial security. This isn’t to say that your twenties should be spent penny-pinching, but, learning when and where to spend money is definitely worth it. So, think about how to start investing in mutual funds, stocks and consider getting health insurance.

2. Start taking care of your mental health:

Whether you decide to do this by going to a therapist. Or, by maintaining bullet journals to track your mental health, meditating, taking healthy breaks and doing self-care rituals – your twenties are a great time to start recognising the importance of your mental health and taking care of it.

3. Stop being afraid of authority figures:

As women (especially desi women) we’re often taught to respect and follow the lead of authority figures almost blindly. And naturally, this can lead to fears around speaking up in front of older people, school teachers or bosses. But this fear is rooted in a societal norm that is used to keep children from becoming a danger to themselves and the people around them. It isn’t a very sustainable practice beyond that point.

Besides, women are policed way too much, and their autonomy isn’t taken very seriously. So to take control of ones narrative by speaking up in front of authority figures is an act of bravery that frankly deserves to be followed through more often.

4. Start working on your confidence levels:

Your twenties are a great time to allow yourself to look silly, and shed any self-limiting beliefs you’ve been carrying around. Especially about how the world views you. For all you know, you are your biggest critic, and your mistakes aren’t as gigantic as you make them out to be in your mind. So, read as many self-help books, listen to as many life coaches and do one thing every day that scares the heck out of you, until you realise confidence is less about your image and reputation, and more about how you see yourself.

5. Find a good gynaecologist for yourself:

This is a no brainer. A non-negotiable clause. Taking responsibility for yourself also includes taking care of your body, loving it and protecting it like you would a loved ones. Women are constantly going through it when it comes to their hormonal and reproductive health, so it’s really important to find a gynaecologist you feel super comfortable around, trust wholeheartedly, and can stick to for the long haul.

6. Start investing in a capsule wardrobe:

As frivolous or as vain as this sounds, it’s actually a great way to manage your finances for the long run. Clothes are an investment, and if you have ten basic, high-quality pieces in your closet that you can style eighty different ways, with a few experimental items – you’ll save the money you’d be spending on clothes that might get tattered in six months. This is also a great way to curb the habit of going on compulsive (and pocket-burning) shopping sprees.

7. Prioritise travelling more often:

Experiences teach you a lot and stay with you your whole life. Rather than cluttering your house, they’ll take up meaningful space in your mind as good memories. So, spending money on a travel experience is never a waste of money, or time. Especially if you make sure to learn about the different cultures you get to see.

8. Invest in educating yourself:

Whether it’s going back to school to get a master’s degree or taking up online courses, or reading up on a certain subject – learning something new will add substance to your personality, and help you build a healthy relationship with yourself. It’ll teach you self-trust and independence on whole new level.

9. Stop being afraid to make mistakes:

Allowing yourself the room to make mistakes builds resilience and leads to wisdom that can be used to better your future. Your twenties are the best (but not the only) decade to stop judging yourself and to push yourself past your comfort zone. It’s okay if you just got out of college and want to pursue a career that’s unrelated to your degree, or if you don’t even know what you want to do in life, confusion doesn’t always spell disaster. Without a bit of confusion, there would be no incentive to find clarity and discernment

10. Stop laughing at jokes you don’t find funny:

Often, women are conditioned to sit in discomfort and let any kind of disrespect slide, but you don’t have to continue living with the same set of beliefs. You can start living on your own terms and have healthy boundaries with people. And, boundaries are a lot about not accepting mistreatment, disrespect, or derogatory remarks especially if they’re disguised as jokes.

This doesn’t mean you need to shut a joke down by being rude or disrespectful in return, but it is important to learn how to remove yourself from toxic situations and dynamics that cost you your mental health. You don’t have to play along with someone who is actively trying to make you feel uncomfortable.

11. Start prioritizing your physical health:

Your physical health has a lot fo do with your brain chemistry. It’s all over the internet, all those studies about which chemicals release while we exercise and the hormones it helps balance out. So, clearly working out has its benefits. But, this does not mean you’ve to kill yourself in the gym or chase an unrealistic body standard. All you’ve to do is move your body and get some blood pumpin’.

12. Find a solid support system:

Life is hard. And adulting is even harder. most people start adulting fully in their twenties. Just as spending some alone time and building a healthy relationship with yourself is important, making time for your family, and friends is also important. As you get older, life only gets busier, and more complicated, and we all need support through that. We all need a home team or a soul tribe, even if that’s just our two best friends from 7th grade.

The Undertaker: A Legacy Which Will Never Be Forgotten

Few have ever worked in professional wrestling that has embodied their character quite like The Undertaker.

The Phenom was every bit of that moniker. In the early days of his tenure in WWE(F), he was a mysterious and daunting presence that both captivated and terrified audiences.

The Undertaker was more than a wrestler or a character; he was an entire persona that—for many years—no one could quite figure out. He was the living dead man, the one who took opponents to the grave.

When one thinks of wrestling entrances, the time that most use to showboat, sway the crowd, or emphasize their personality, The Undertaker’s is the inevitable talking point. A slow, methodical walk to the ring surrounded by smoke and fog in a darkened arena, while bells toll and ominous music chills the air. It was a sight to see, and every crowd that sat through it did so in amazement.

The Undertaker was the wrestler that no one could escape. Anyone that had a feud with ‘Taker was never quite the same again. His long-standing WrestleMania streak is one of the most impressive feats in wrestling history—winning 21 consecutive matches at the premier WWE event. WrestleMania happens once a year, so yes, that means that The Undertaker was undefeated on the Grandest Stage of Them All for 21 years.

Early Life

Mark Calaway was born on March 24, 1965, in Houston, Texas. The youngest of five brothers, Mark grew up in a large family. In high school, Calaway played basketball and football. He went to college on a basketball scholarship. He attended Angelina College in 1983, but two years later, in 1985, he enrolled at Texas Wesleyan University. He played center for the Wesleyan basketball team and majored in sports management.

Calaway dropped out of college to focus on a professional sports career and contemplated trying his hand at going pro in basketball in Europe. Ultimately, Calaway decided to pursue his passion for wrestling and began training in 1986.

How the Undertaker started wrestling

Start in Wrestling

Mark Calaway’s start in professional wrestling wasn’t a smooth one. He trained under Buzz Sawyer in 1986, but Calaway states that Sawyer lacked commitment and relayed limited knowledge of wrestling. So after departing from Sawyer, Calaway took a “learn as you go” approach and venture out into the wrestling world.

On June 26, 1987, Calaway had his debut match with World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) against Bruiser Brody. In a stroke of fate, Percival “Percy” Pringle III accompanied Calaway to the ring—the man who would later become Paul Bearer and manage The Undertaker for much of his WWE career.

In 1989, Calaway was reintroduced as The Master of Pain in Continental Wrestling Association (CWA) and managed by Dutch Mantel. Calaway wrestled then Heavyweight Champion Jerry Lawler in an impromptu match. Though The Master of Pain dominated the match, Dutch Mantel called the monster off. Lawler agreed to an official title match. The Master of Pain dominated again and won his first professional wrestling championship. Three weeks later, Lawler won the title back by becoming the first person to pin The Master of Pain.

World Championship Wrestling

Calaway joined WCW in 1989 under the new gimmick of “Mean” Mark Callous—a name that Terry Funk created. Callous was presented as a dark and nasty character. He mostly wore black, claiming that he had an affinity for snakes and Ozzy Osbourne music. Callous partnered with Dan Spivey to replace the injured Sid Vicious in the tag-team The Skyscrapers. The duo attacked the mega-popular The Road Warriors and obtained a match. However, days before the event, Dan Spivey left WCW. Callous and a masked partner lost to The Road Warriors.

Callous struck out on his own in singles competition after and joined Paul E. Dangerously. Callous defeated Ace Steel and Brian Pillman while Paul E. managed him.

Reportedly, Ole Anderson told Calaway that he was doomed in the professional wrestling world, and he believed that fans would never pay money to see Calaway as the main draw. Nevertheless, with a legitimate hip injury, Calaway pressed on and wrestled Lex Luger at The Great American Bash. He lost the match, but his primary objective was to perform regardless of injury because he knew that Vince McMahon was watching.

At the insistence of Bruce Prichard, McMahon met with Calaway to discuss a possible future in the, then, WWF. The meeting turned positive results, and Calaway gave his notice to WCW. He defeated Dave Johnson in his final WCW match on September 7.

World Wrestling Entertainment

Calaway signed with the WWF in 1990 and made his debut that year at a taping of Superstars. His official on-camera debut as The Undertaker came at Survivor Series as the mystery member of Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team. One minute into the match, The Undertaker eliminated Koko B. Ware. He later eliminated Dusty Rhodes. He was eventually eliminated via count-out, but DiBiase went on to win the match for the team.

Throughout 1990 and part of 1991, The Undertaker squashed every opponent put in front of him—most of them being jobbers with the sole purpose of making ‘Taker look menacing. He switched managers from Brother Love to Paul Bearer in 1991. Bearer would carry an urn with them and claim the object could restore The Undertaker’s power if he were bested.

The Undertaker’s first real feud in the WWF came against “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka. The two squared off at WrestleMania VII in a match that saw The Undertaker quickly defeat Snuka. Shortly after disposing of Snuka, Undertaker began a feud with The Ultimate Warrior. The feud with Warrior culminated in the first-ever Body Bag Match, which Warrior won.

At Survivor Series 1991, The Undertaker defeated Hulk Hogan to become the World Heavyweight Champion. The victory saw Calaway become the youngest—at the time—Heavyweight Champion in WWF’s history. However, the record would only last until 1993, when Yokozuna took that honour.

Six days after becoming WWF Champion, The Undertaker and Hogan had a rematch that saw ‘Taker lose the belt. Despite two matches, and two outcomes, both were deemed controversial, and WWF President Jack Tunney vacated the World Title. Ric Flair later won the title when he became the winner of the 1992 Royal Rumble—the only time the Rumble has decided the holder of a vacant Heavyweight Championship.

To allow time off to nurse a back injury, The Undertaker was shoved into a casket by Yokozuna and a host of others at the 1994 Royal Rumble in a Heavyweight Title match. A video feed inside the casket was shown to signify Undertaker’s spirit and eventual return. The Undertaker was out of action for seven months.

Ted DiBiase reintroduced The Undertaker after WrestleMania X, but with one problem—it wasn’t The Undertaker. Instead, the real Undertaker would return and feud with the imposter, dubbed The Underfaker by fans. Taker would assume the Deadman persona and change his colours from black and grey to black and purple. He defeated The Underfaker in a casket match at SummerSlam.

The Undertaker held several character variations throughout his WWF/E run, such as the Deadman, the Lord of Darkness, the American Bad Ass, the leader of the sinister group the Ministry of Darkness, Big Evil, and eventually returned to the Deadman to finish his active wrestling career.

Famous Matches

In Your House 18: Bad Blood – The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels

The first-ever Hell in a Cell match took place between The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels at Bad Blood in 1997 for the Heavyweight Championship.

A long and gruelling match between two top performers in the company, ‘Taker and Michaels, tore the house down and left a lasting image. Michaels famously fell from the cell but still emerged victorious to retain his Championship when the debuting Kane—Undertaker’s long-lost brother—interfered and attacked Undertaker.

King of the Ring 1998 – The Undertaker vs. Mankind

While not the first Hell in a Cell ever, this one was certainly the most memorable.

The Undertaker and Mankind had a hellacious rivalry that featured many barbaric matches. But, perhaps, none more extreme than this bought. The Undertaker demolished Mankind. He threw Mankind off the top of the cell through the announce tables, then later sent Mankind through the cell’s roof to the mat with a Choke Slam. Undertaker won the match, and the two gave the wrestling world one of the most brutal and classic contests of all time.

WrestleMania XXV – The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels

‘Taker had many great feuds and opponents throughout his career, but none pushed his abilities as an athlete quite like Shawn Michaels.

If I were to make a Top 10 Undertaker matches list, matches against Shawn Michaels would occupy at least three spots—the two were just that good together. WrestleMania 25 is seen as the top candidate by many to the claim of Undertaker’s best match. The two went back and forth in a stellar, knockdown, drag-out brawl filled with high spots, intensity, drama, and nerve-wracking moments. The Undertaker won the match, but none one won more than the fans.

The Undertaker’s Wrestling Style

The Undertaker was a behemoth of a man and wrestled a style that mixed the big man technique with a dash of high-flying and technical ring work.

While The Undertaker is mostly known for his physicality and brutal methods, the Deadman could lock up with the best technical wrestlers in the world.

The Phenom wasn’t averse to climbing the top rope, or even literally walking the ropes, either—and he was seen many times vaulting himself over the top rope from inside the ring to crash onto his opponents. The Undertaker’s style was varied and clinical—the mark of a true talent.

Not many in wrestling can lay claim to accomplishments like ‘Taker can. An overall 7 time World Champion in WWE and holder of multiple other titles, The Undertaker saw success throughout his entire tenure with the company and cemented himself as one of the most memorable and enjoyable wrestlers of all time.

On setup, you can select from more than 40 charities to support. Once you start your activity, you are sponsored by a brand to complete your task. Your activity, distance, duration, and the total amount earned by the community for your chosen charity is displayed on the dashboard.

As all physical activity contributes to charity, you will be motivated to go that extra mile and move more. As a bonus, you will also increase your fitness levels and improve your health. The more steps you do, the more you earn; “Every Mile Matters.”

10. CARROT Fit:

CARROT Fit is the fun way to get fit with your sadistic computer-generated coach. CARROT has one goal – “to transform your flabby carcass into a Grade A specimen of the human race” – and will stop at nothing to achieve her objective. CARROT bribes, inspires, threatens, and ridicules, saying, “You will get fit – or else!”

The app is based on the same 7-minute science-based method as the J&J Official 7 Minute Workout. However, those 7 minutes are sweat-and-pop-culture soaked, involving activity such as Celebrity Face Punches, Dragon Mating Dances, and Mt. Doom Climbs. You can take part in 30 seconds of punishing exercise, followed by 10 seconds rest, “just in case you need to hydrate, catch your breath, or vomit into a bucket.”

CARROT tracks how many steps you have taken and your weight loss, as well as displays your workouts on a calendar. CARROT will pass judgment on your progress. If CARROT is upset by your progress, her harsh demeanor has a 74.9 percent chance of making you cry. However, if CARROT is impressed by your progress, she will reward you with app upgrades and permission to watch a friend eat a bag of potato chips, and she may even present you with cat facts. Lucky you!

FASHION TIPS AHEAD

Gain confidence in your style with fashion advice for styling every look in your closet.

1.Work your capsule wardrobe:

Make sure you have reliable wardrobe staples: an iconic little black dress, a pair of jeans that fit perfectly, a classic blazer, simple T-shirts and button-downs in neutral colors, and an effortless leather jacket (or denim jacket). Investing in a capsule collection of mix-and-match basics (and learning how to style them) is the key to looking put together.

2. Make sure your clothes fit perfectly:

One trick to making any item of clothing look amazing is to hire a good tailor. Tailored clothing not only looks polished, but it also feels more comfortable. Pants that drag on the ground and dresses that bunch up awkwardly won’t make you feel stylish. If your capsule wardrobe fits you well, you can start to play with over- and under-sized items in a way that feels fashionable, not sloppy.

3. Learn how to balance proportions:

Balancing proportions is about styling your outfits to create an overall aesthetic harmony. The way you achieve this is by wearing clothes that are fitted to your body shape. When you want to play with oversized clothes or unusual shapes, make it a fashion moment by keeping the rest of the look fitted. For example, try pairing a tight crop top with wide-leg jeans, or a puff-shoulder top with straight-leg pants.

4. Find your personal style:

Developing a signature style can take years, but you can get started by creating a moodboard. Remember that personal style is an experiment; you never know what amazing looks await you until you’re in the dressing room. The categories “menswear” and “womenswear” shouldn’t dictate how you shop. Take time to play with colors and shapes to find what looks great on your unique body.

5. Become a better shopper:

Learning how to shop for exactly what you want will help you avoid filling your closet full of items you never wear. When your wardrobe consists of pieces that you love, styling an outfit will become second nature.

6. Add a belt:

Adding a belt to your look is one of the easiest ways to make any outfit look more put-together. It’s also a great trick for bringing balance to a look that otherwise might not work—like a long cashmere sweater and billowy midi skirt.

7. Play with colour:

If you’re nervous about adding color to your look, start with just one colorful piece, and keep the rest of your look neutral. As you get more comfortable with colors, you’ll learn which color combinations work best for your style. Take a look at a color wheel for inspiration.

8. Mix patterns and textures:

The days of matching your handbag to your shoes are over. Clashing textures and prints make a bold fashion statement. Start small with neutral patterns like stripes and low-key textures like leather and knits, adding in the sequins and paisleys in small amounts (like a scarf, tie, or clutch) until you learn what works for you.

9. Always Accessorize:

Try to wear at least one accessory, whether it’s a statement necklace, a pop-color bag or a great pair of earrings (or all of the above). A solid statement piece can take an ensemble from ho-hum to a stand-out in seconds.

10. Get To Know Your Body Shape:

Fit first. With that, getting to know your body shape is key. Consider yourself a petite pear shape and prefer to highlight your shoulders? Build your closet with clothes that put the spotlight on your shape and favorite features.

Body Positivity

Body positivity refers to the assertion that all people deserve to have a positive body image, regardless of how society and popular culture view ideal shape, size, and appearance.

Being body-positive encourages affirming attitudes towards your own body. Loving yourself is the greatest revolution! Many of us struggle with becoming body-positive.

Below are 10 tips for body positivity you should keep in mind when practicing self-care.

1. Post positive affirmations on your mirror:

In front of the mirror is where we experience the most body-hate. Try posting positive notes on your mirrors, such as, “I am enough”, “Love your body”, and “You’re beautiful”.

2. Get rid of your scale:

Weighing yourself can become an obsession. The scale can have power over your happiness and self-worth. The number on the scale does not define your worth, it simply tells you your relationship with the gravity of the earth.

3. If you wouldn’t say it to your friends, don’t say it to yourself:

When you find yourself being critical of your body, ask yourself, “Would I say this to a friend?”, the answer will most likely be “No”. Treat your body like your best friend!

4. Learn to accept a compliment:

By not being able to accept a compliment, you are putting yourself down. Avoid responding to a compliment with “Thank you, but…”. Simply showing your gratitude by responding with just a “Thank you” is enough. You may also respond with returning a compliment, however, be careful not to undervalue yourself while doing this.

5. Donate your clothing that doesn’t fit instead of torturing yourself, and buy clothing you feel great in:

Experts found that we spend approximately 16 mins on a weekday deciding what to wear. Imagine how much longer this time could be trying to pick out clothing that no longer fits. Instead of torturing ourselves with thoughts that we no longer fit into our favorite pair of jeans, donate them! Buy clothes that make you feel great in.

6. Question whether body-hate is helping:

Does shaming your body actually do anything for you? Does it make you feel better? Does it make anything change? No, it doesn’t. Why cause unnecessary stress on yourself? Ask yourself these questions out loud, you will realize body-shaming is just a waste of energy.

7. Don’t compare yourself to others, or your younger self:

“Comparison is the thief of joy” – Theodore Roosevelt

Everybody is different, and our bodies change significantly as we grow older. It is normal and healthy to not look like what we looked like 5 years ago. It is important to be happy and healthy in the bodies we have now. Comparing yourself to others, or even yourself, does nothing for you, so just be(you)tiful!

8. Don’t tell that friend to un-tag you in that picture:

Don’t do it! Learn to accept what you look like in every situation. You do not need to look “perfect” in pictures. Even if you think you don’t look “good” in a certain picture a friend has posted of you, the people who are going to see this picture know you and know what you look like. So what’s the harm in posting a silly picture or a picture you may not completely love except destroying your self-love?

9. Challenge the idea that thin people are happier:

Do you know any thin people who are unhappy? Do you know any larger people who are happy? People can be happy or unhappy at any size. Challenge yourself to think of one thing you are happy about in your life right now, and the next time you compare yourself to others who are thinner, remember that you don’t know what they have been through or are going through.

10. Find a supportive squad to keep you positive:

Surround yourself with people who are supportive and uplifting. If your friends or family body-shame themselves or others, this is your chance to educate them on being body-positive, and maybe not asking, “Does this make me look fat”, when they try on an outfit. Being around supportive people can help you feel more confident.
