Mass Communication has emerged as a major area of interest and has immensely contributed to the development & empowerment of society. As an academic discipline, it has rapidly acquired importance and become a major attraction for students. The information technology revolution has significantly contributed to the expansion of mass media. It has also posed major challenges for students, teachers and practitioners of mass media. The rapidly evolving technology scenario is changing the very complexion of the discipline in a manner unknown to any other area of academic activity. It is a challenge which we accept as an essential part of life at IIMC.

The Department of Mass Communication is one of the premier institutions of the country engaged in imparting training in mass communication theories and skills. The department has also been conducting media research of societal importance in its Ph.D programme since 2009.

The Department of Mass Communication is equipped with state-of- the-art production facility. Its studio is equipped with an advanced three-camera set-up and high-tech console and outdoor recording equipment. The department\’s video production facility is rated as one of the best for the production of news and current affairs programmes. Its computer lab is developed to be a high end facility. The newly constructed classroom complex is equipped with two smart classrooms and other latest teaching and learning facilities. The seminar library of the department has in its stock a rich collection of over 1700 core books and also subscribes to 10 important national and international journals of academic significance. Its faculty is highly qualified and experienced. It has developed an innovative system of intensive Video Production training with the aim of developing multi-tasking ability among its students. The department has come to eminence by winning several national and international awards in the categories of documentaries and films made by students. Most of its alumni are doing exceptionally well in almost all the reputed media houses of the country.

KM Mathew (1917-2010), acclaimed for his journalism with a human touch, was not content with taking Malayala Manorama to the very pinnacle of regional language journalism in India or launching a string of publications, each of which was a runaway success. Nor did he rest on his laurels when he made his successful foray into English journalism with The Week which went on to become the country\’s best-selling newsmagazine. Even as he pursued journalism that was bold and sound on ethics, winning awards and setting trends, at the back of his mind was always a long-cherished dream that he often shared with family and friends: to set up a journalism school of world class. He wanted journalism to be taught the way it should be: with a hands-on and no-nonsense approach and without frills and hype. His dream was to mould handpicked students into well-rounded journalists with quality training. This dream finally turned into a reality in 2002 when he set up the Manorama School of Communication (MASCOM) which quickly established itself as a premier journalism training centre in the country..

Sophia Smt. Manorama Devi Somani College Started in 2009.
