MEDITATION – A GUIDE TO START

MEDITATION – GUIDE TO START

WHAT IS MEDITATION? THE REAL ACTION:

We are all reactors to nature i.e. Whenever we hear a sound or noise, we tend to hear it, see what it is, at first case we feel it. You may think what is the relation between the above and meditation. The intense ability to control us by imitating ourselves. When you see a gorgeous beautiful thing, our eyes seek attention to it and makes us to go glare at it, but it is dangerous behind; which eyes doesn’t realize. Mind instructs not to see, eyes obey, that is when control occurs.

ATTAINING WAYS:

There are a ‘n’ number of ways to do meditation based on one’s nature. But the common attribute is to hold the heart. The Heart is like a lake, each stone thrown on it raises waves and these waves doesn’t allow us realize the true nature of us. The Moon’s light falls on the river, as the river is with waves, we couldn’t see the reflection clearly. Likewise, many things affect us externally for a stationary time; escaping from the trap make us find who we are and understand what we are.

WHERE TO DO MEDITATION?

“Arrange a separate, isolated room if possible. Sleeping, eating and entering the room without bathing should be totally avoided; keep it orthodox” says Swami Vivekananda. But in an era as such, it goes hardly possible. As there is a will, there is a path; take any place which is distraction free especially from the digital world. Make sure that while starting meditation, anger, worry or any other emotion should be avoided. Mind and heart should be neutral.

THE FIRST THING TO DO:

First, leave heart to wander around in its own direction. Slowly monitor them, keenly observe as its the prior idea to start it. Without knowing what your soul is doing, controlling it is impossible. There may be vivid, evil thoughts too, which to encounter may be shocked in the beginning. As you continue with the process, you can feel its reducing potency. Things get into your control and you become only yours. The Mind gets unaffected by extrinsic factors. First believe that your body is rigid and with it you can realize all that is possible in the world.

FOOD AND MALNUTRITION

FOOD AND MALNUTRITION

FOOD SECURITY

Food is defined as a substance that we people eat, drink to live and maintain life and growth. Food security would denote a person’s ability to eat enough, stay active and lead a healthy life.

Food security exists when all people at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active life. This concept is now-a-days used in few decades. Initially it referred to as overall supply of for a global, regional or national context.

The basic components of food and nutrition is the availability of food, accessibility and absorption. Availability of food in desired quantities which might change stocks and imports. Capabilities and opportunities in turn are related mainly to one’s access to his/her own assets and education. Absorption of food is the ability of biologically utilization.

NUTRITION AND HEALTH STATUS

India has largest number of malnourished children in the world and half of the stunned children. However, records reveals that the stunning prevalence has been declined since 2020 and nearly 45 million suffered from wasting. The malnutrition measures are used to track the world to move along in its sustainable development goals. However the crises remains same or increased when it comes with percentage. India losing up to nearly 4% of GDP and 9% of productivity is also a combined failure.

MALNUTRITION

The COVID 19 has however caused the biggest increase in the world by hunger and malnutrition. For Indian children older than fiver years of age this is the first time that the national values are published. The National Family Health survey says that nearly 29% of the Indian children suffer from malnutrition. Besides COVID Malnutrition is till running around many. Hunger is most crucial pain in the world. When we let to see children with such pain, we will try to give what we have.

ADDICTION

ADDICTION

Addiction is one of the complex diseases which affects the brain. A person who is exposed to a huge amount of stress gets addicted to consuming substances or looks for the methods that gives him or her the required relief. ALCOHOLISM

Alcoholism is also known as alcohol dependence. It is a dabbling addictive disorder. In most of the individuals, it starts with the social drinking which eventually leads to the heavier alcohol consumption. TREATMENT OF ADDICTION

It involves the management of alcoholism and drug abuse. The Government and Non-Government Organizations in our country which have rehabilitation centres to treat and counsel the drug addicts and alcoholics by means of medical and psychological approaches.

Traditional and Online School

It sounded pretty weird when we thought about attending school from our bed back in 2019, but now when we look at it, it has become a new normal.

THE NEW NORMAL

It started back in March 2020, when the complete lockdown was imposed by the Prime Minister of India due to increasing cases of Covid-19, and all the educational institutions along with everything else was shut down. The mode of classes was switched to online and all the students were directed to cope with the teachers in the online lectures.

As time passed by and the situation grew even worse, and the mode of online education became normal like any traditional method of education. Online classes didn’t even mold the schedule of students but gave them a better chance to interact with teachers. It’s not that there aren’t any drawbacks to it, they’re present in almost everything like students finding a distraction during the time of classes and a rush to be highly self-motivated, which often leads to students getting misguided and wasting their time.

TRADITIONAL VS ONLINE CLASSES

Both traditional and online classes have their own pros and cons- it’s up to the students how they utilize the opportunities provided to them.

FLEXIBILITY: Where traditional classes have fixed schedules and demand the particular time of the student, on the other hand, online classes provide students flexibility and a schedule that they can fix on their own. It lets students stay focused and give suitable time to their other commitments.

SELF DISCIPLINE AND MOTIVATION: When it comes to discipline and motivation traditional classes do have an advantage for it holds a structured schedule and provides students on-campus interactive sessions, whereas in online classes students need to stay motivated and save themselves from distractions that might disrupt their schedule.

SOCIAL INTERACTION: The interaction in the online classes is so much more efficient than those in traditional because not only provides scheduled doubt lectures but gives access to students of recorded lectures that help them deal with their queries, while the traditional classes fail to thrive because of the lack in regularity due to distance and several other factors.

BLENDED EDUCATION

The curriculum is designed in such a way that it can be studied through both- online and in-person learning. It’s up to the individual on how they take the medium and learn to be productive by any means.
There might be a minimal difference between the two- likewise timing, accessibility, and place, but both the sources implement the best of themselves for the education of students and hence it’s up to the students to decide what they want in the future, as per the present circumstances there might be a day where students will have to choose between the two options of education, that is- online and traditional.
CONCLUSION
Most of it comes to personal preferences of how one learns more efficiently, hence there ain’t no right or wrong in traditional versus online school. These learning methods can be very effective or of no use at all, all that depends on that particular individual for they take apply it on their personal style of learning.

JAPANESE – ANTIAGING SECRET

IKIGAI – review on anti aging

IKIGAI – YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE

It tells about the secret to a long and happy life, gives  the real meaning of life. Japanese culture which is unique, says that there should be purpose in life and there is no retirement for that.

THE SECRET

HARA HACHI BU – sayings in Japanese which is repeated before eating, meaning full your belly to the half. They stop eating when their stomach is half filled. The way of serving food is also unique in their culture that is food is served in five cups, initially they will have the feeling like they have more food, but when they eat that they will always feel like half filled. The pleasure of short term like eating snacks is avoided by them.

MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO –  a sound mind in a sound body. It says the truth that both are mind and body are interconnected and is important for us to keep them active. Physical exercise can help one get out of mental stress. If one exercises regularly his neurons are active in the sense that he is able to adapt to the new environment easily, On the other case, the person who lacks exercise will be lacking inactive state of mind as the connected neurons don’t act accurately as a result the person is unable to adapt the surrounding.

THE STRESS

Research reveals the truth that stress is the primary cause of aging. Stress promotes cellular aging as the cellular structure telomere is affected and Premature aging is acquired by stress as the cells are unable to regenerate. The greater the stress, the greater is the degenerative effect on cells.

The ancient people had a high dose of cortisol and adrenaline, which comes in the danger moments and makes the body healthy. As Modern humans due to stress we acquire low doses of cortisol flowing constantly throughout the body, which finally results in health problems.

Threats lead to stress, Stress leads to digestive problems. As Prevention is always better than cure, we can avoid stress before that comes into us. We can attain the state of peace by regular practice of exercise, yoga and self care. Change is the process, we need to adapt it for the progress.

THE SECRET TIPS

Walk at least 30  minutes a day.
Replace digital with real.
Have a healthy diet.
Make a conscious routine
Workout, play and have fun.

THE ATTITUDE

The key element of  keeping the body young is by keeping the mind active. Escaping from difficulties or situations in life will yield nothing productive rather coming out from the cave of comfort and fear will help the brain to train it in a way of differentiating approaching problems.
People who live the longest have two unavoidable traits in common; a positive attitude and a high degree of emotional awareness, i.e., facing challenges with a positive outlook and are able to manage their emotions are on their way to longevity.

‘LIVE LONG, STAY HAPPY, STAY BLESSED’

WHY SCHOOLS DON'T TEACH ABOUT MONEY

      MONEY HOW TO MAKE IT?

HAVE YOU EVER IMAGINED THE WORLD WITHOUT MONEY?

TWO MINUTES IMAGINATION-HOO! IAM OUT OF CONTROL., AFTER TWO MINUTES,

COMING TO  REALITY., YES, OFFCOURSE NOT, RIGHT! WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY?

AN EXCHANGE MEDIUM WHICH WE PEOPLE USE ON SURVIVAL BASIS IS CALLED MONEY.

WHAT SCHOOLS LACK?

The term school is something which gives education. The ultimate learning process starts here. Nowadays schools teach us how to solve mathematical problems but not financial problems which comes to reality.
Something missing which is important and that must never be an optional one. Yes, that’s learning to make money AS MONEY IS ALWAYS ULTIMATE.

As, schools play a major part they are the ones who can guide growing children, but the sad truth is the Society knowingly or unknowingly plays an important role in our lives.

The theme is schools are framed by the government. If they make it compulsory No one is unable to stop that.

FINANCIAL PROBLEMS

Every human in the earth have problems, But when it is financial problems, people become mentally stressed a lot. It is only because of debts alone. If we scrutinize it the origin will be lack of knowledge in handling the financial problems.
Every year the suicide cases due to the financial problems are increasing in spite of pandemic as this is 2021, people actually don’t know how and what to do in toughest situation. Some seek advises from their nearby ones, Others face it without much care and some others are not serious at the initial stage as if nothing happened to them.

INDIVIDUALS NEED

It is schools responsibility to identify the individuals interest and upgrade children on the basis of learning along with life skills which plays an important role when they come into real life.
Some may not like 9-5 work but they still work because they want money, their basic needs are to be satisfied.
On the other hand there are still people who don’t work regularly but still they have money and they have a demand more than their needs. How is this possible? They still learn to  earn money smartly and this is also not taught in schools. But still How? This is the most important question to be noted carefully.
Such kind of people think smartly on stocks, investments and on certain assets which always have an appreciated value.

HOW TO SOLVE IT?

Though many students are not interested in certain subject they are forced to learn it. But Finance being an important life skill and not taught in schools like how to handle it, really make a sense right!
They all needed to be sorted out carefully and taught at the being stage of our life. Off course, parents have an important responsibility to guide them in the financial aspects at the early stage of their life as conveying them their problems and how they are handling it. By doing so, they start thinking and generate ideas on their future investments.

THE CHANGES

The only things that is constant in the world is changes and that is called as the progress. The thing which we can give to our next generation is the financial learning. We can make them better by changing the vision which we tend to learn in our childhood but unfortunately we lack it.
As a next generation parents, its our responsibility to make our children to invest in value education and give them financial knowledge
Giving them financial skills and making that as a habit will surely make a drastic change in the society.
As we live in the 21st century we have technological in our hand. We can grow it with good vision and make our future generation financially stable.
YES, WE WILL START IT RIGHT NOW!

MALARIA

                                MALARIA

Malaria can be fatal disease for human beings. Approximately 300 million people around the world get infected with malaria every year. More than 2 million people die every year due to malaria disease.

Malaria is caused by a protozoan parasite Plasmodium. This disease   spreads through the bite of an insect vector- the female Anopheles mosquito feeds upon plant juice.

The name Malaria was proposed by Macculochin 1827. C.L.A. Laveran in 1880, a French physician, discovered the Malarial parasite –  Plasmodium  in the blood of a malaria patient. He received Nobel prize for this discovery in 1907.

SYMPTOMS-

Main symptoms of malaria include headache, nausea, muscular pain and high fever. Each malarial attack is of 6 to 10 hours duration and consists of the three stages:

1.    Cold stage, feeling of extreme cold and shivers

2.    Hot stage, high fever, faster respiration and heartbeat and

3.    Sweating stage, i.e., due to profuse sweating, temperature of the body goes down to normal.

Even after the patient is cured of malaria, the patient feel weak and becomes anemic. Malaria may also secondarily cause enlargement of spleen and liver. Presence of malarial parasite can be checked by blood test.

PREVENTION-

Malaria is an infectious disease. It can spread from an infected person to a healthy person (host) by the bite of female Anopheles mosquitoes (vectors). The only way to prevent malaria is to take precaution against mosquito bites.

We can protect ourselves from the bite of mosquitoes by following methods:

1.    Wire- gauge should be used on doors and windows of houses to prevent entry of mosquitoes.

2.    Insect- repellents (e.g., Odomos) should be used to prevent mosquito- bite.

3.    One should sleep under mosquito nets.

4.    Mosquito larvae can be killed by sprinkling kerosene oil on large- sized water bodies. Some larvivorous fishes such as Gambusia, minnows or trouts or birds (e.g., ducks) can be introduced in water bodies. These animals feed on mosquito larvae and hence the population of mosquito is checked. This is called biological control of mosquito.

5.    Adult mosquitoes can be killed by spraying insecticides (e.g., BHC, malathion) on the walls of human dwellings. Insecticides are chemical poisons (toxicants), hence, regulation of mosquito population by them is called chemical control. The insecticide DDT is not used in the chemical control of mosquitoes, as it persists in the environment for much longer time and can cause toxicity by accumulating in the body of fishes, birds and humans through food chain.

6.    The breeding grounds should be destroyed. Thus, the ditches, puddles or swamps around human dwellings should be drained or filled. We should not allow the collection of water in any uncovered containers such as water tank, pot, cooler, flower pot, discarded tires, etc.

Ø Recently Allan Porter and his team produced a genetically engineered aquatic bacteria at National Institute of Singapore. When mosquito larvae feed on these bacteria, they get killed by the toxic substance produced by these bacteria. This can prove to be an effective biological control method against malaria.

CONTROL-

A drug named Quinine, which is extracted from the bark of Cinchona tree, is used to treat a person suffering from malaria. This drug kills most of the stages of malarial parasite. There are certain other drugs (medicines) which should be taken on the advice of doctor. Scientists are trying hard to develop an antimalarial vaccine.

Ø Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow has developed an anti- cerebral malaria drug called – Arteether. This drug is extracted from a herbaceous plant Artemisia annua belonging to family Asteraceae.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE

                       DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE

What is the definition of drug and alcohol abuse?

It occurs when you use alcohol, prescription medicine, and other legal and illegal substances too much or in the wrong way. Substance abuse differs from addiction. Many people with substance abuse problems are able to quit or can change their unhealthy behavior. Addiction, on the other hand, is a disease.

Use and abuse of drugs and alcohol by teens is very common and can have serious consequences. In the 15-24 year age range, 50% of deaths (from accidents, homicides, suicides) involve alcohol or drug abuse. Drugs and alcohol also contribute to physical and sexual aggression such as assault or rape. Possible stages of teenage experience with alcohol and drugs include abstinence (non-use), experimentation, regular use (both recreational and compensatory for other problems), abuse, and dependency. Repeated and regular recreational use can lead to other problems like anxiety and depression. Some teenagers regularly use drugs or alcohol to compensate for anxiety, depression, or a lack of positive social skills.

Signs of drug and alcohol abuse

Behavioral Signs

Behavioral signs involve a person’s outward relations with the world whereas physical signs relate to the body’s manifestation of side effects due to the presence of drugs in the system. Behavioral signs include but are not limited to:

OBSESSIVE THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS:

Acquiring and using the drug become the main priorities of life while all or most other obligations including work, family, or school are sidelined.

DISREGARD OF HARM CAUSED:

Although the drug abuse is causing physical and mental distress to the individual and their loved ones, the person struggling with addiction continues using drugs or alcohol.

LOSS OF CONTROL:

Even in the face of wanting to stop or reduce their drug use, the person cannot do so.

DENIAL OF ADDICTION OR HIDING DRUG USE:

When confronted, the person battling addiction will deny or downplay their drug use. To avoid having to explain themselves to others, the person may do drugs in secret.

Drug abuse cannot remain hidden for long. Its impact is too dramatic, and the person using drugs can spiral out of control fast. Changes in behavior, neglecting responsibilities, exhausting financial resources, and engaging in criminal conduct are some of the most obvious signals of a drug problem. Family members, loved ones, and coworkers are usually in the best position to recognize a drug problem as they are familiar with the person’s behavior and habits.

Physical Signs

Physical signs of addiction can manifest as side effects of use, during an overdose, or as a result of withdrawal. It may be very difficult for someone to pinpoint the cause of the physical signs, but severe effects will require immediate medical treatment. Also, it is important to understand that withdrawal symptoms arise when the body adjusts to the absence of familiar quantities of a drug. It is a natural process, but withdrawal can be dangerous.

General physical signs of addiction include but are not limited to:

·         Enlarged or small pupils

·         Sudden weight loss or gain

·         Bloodshot eyes

·         Insomnia

·         Unusual body odors

·         Poor physical coordination

·         Looking unkempt

·         Slurred speech

Typical signs of an overdose may include but are not limited to:

·         Drowsiness or trouble walking

·         Agitation

·         Aggression or violent behavior

·         Difficulty breathing

·         Nausea and vomiting

·         Hallucinations

·         Delusions

·         Loss of consciousness

Alcohol and Drug Abuse: Prevention and Control

Young and adolescent minds could be molded in any direction depending on the kind of exposure they get. They might befriend abusers and get into the habit of drinking, smoking or taking drugs. At this point in time, it is the responsibility of the parents as well as the teachers to handle the issue sensitively and guide them in the right direction.

Here are certain measures which need to be taken to prevent and control alcohol and drug abuse.

  • In the Indian society, the youth are often pushed beyond their limits to excel in every field. Parents want their kids to outperform their peer in studies, sports, creativity, and every other activity. Under excess pressure, the child often has the tendency to take up alcohol and drugs as a resort.
  • Persistent counselling is required to teach the child to deal with failures, pressures, stress, and disappointments. In fact, guiding them towards productive activities such as music, painting, yoga, sports or one of their hobbies could also help.
  • Children often pick up habits from their closed ones. Thus, the attitude of parents and older siblings towards alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs also affect the child’s choices.
  • In case the child is stressed out and on the verge of abuse, help must be sought from parents or even trusted friends who may guide them in the right direction, thereby helping him vent out their anxiety and guilt.
  • Parents must stay connected with the child, keeping a track of his whereabouts at all times. Spending more family time together will help them stay close and honest with their parents.
  • If it is found that children have fallen prey to alcohol and drug abuse, their friends must immediately bring this to the notice of their parents or teachers, so that the latter could take remedial measures for the same.
  • However, despite all the prevention measures, if unfortunately, the child does get into the abuse, seek professional aid. There are a number of rehabilitation centres, de-addiction programs and qualified psychiatrists who would help to get rid of the problem.

The role of students in developing nation

the ROLE OF STUDENTs IN BUILDING nation

It is a well-known fact that the youth of any country is a great asset. They are indeed the future of the country and represent it at every level. The role of youths in nation-building is more important than you might think. In other words, the intelligence and work of the youth will take the country on the pathway of success. As every citizen is equally responsible, the youth is too. They are the building blocks of a country.

Relation between ‘Student’ and ‘Nation’:

Previously, we have known that people can make their nation great with their thinking, dreaming, achieving. People are grown trees whereas students are seeds. A good seed gives a good tree, good tree gives good fruit. A student becomes a good citizen; a good citizen makes a better society.
The formula for great nation is “Good student–> virtuous society–>great nation”. A good student forms a virtuous society means which is graft-less, politically balanced, economically standard and stands on moral grounds. The nation with integrity stands forever.

The students are prospective heirs of nation. So they should be well equipped with sound moral, political and economical views. They are the pillars on which beautiful edifices will be built. Students must have these qualities- a) Desire to win b) Courage to do things c) Wisdom to understand and unravel the problems.

The role of students in development of country

Students are vital organs of nation. They are future citizens, who can become “Nation’s most needed” categories i.e. producers, protectors, philosophers etc. Producers produce the needed items which may be related to food, electronic, engineering arenas etc. Protectors protect the nation. Philosophers guide the nation.

Apart from this, the student must play these acts of life to make the best nation.

1. Student as a Human Resource:

A nation for its existence basically needs food, cloth and shelter. Recently we have come to know that there is something left behind which is to be considered i.e. human resources. Every student must become a human resource to strengthen society and nation. Let us see the north-eastern countries which had turned into human resource countries.

A) Japan: It is a small country which may equal to two states of our country. It is a victim of “Little boy and Fat man”(Atomic bombs USA hurled on Hiroshima and Nagasaki) and lost 3.1 million people in Second World War. So many were laid on deathbed and lived devoid of organs. Even though, it is developed country because of its human resources who are maestros in making robots. Now Japan is international shop for robots.

B) China: It became supreme in the field of engineering. Recent inventions and masonry constructions shocked the world. Recent masonry constructions-A 36km Bay bridge on the sea, Tarmac road on Everest, Three Gorges dam etc. It became the factory of world. Nokia sets, Apple goods are manufactured here. It is just because their population turned into human resources.

2. Student as an Invigilator of Society:

Student must invigilate his environment. He must be active in every field. He should participate in politics also. According to Plato, “Education should be given up to 25 years at the elementary level and up to 35 years at the higher level. This is to cure mental malady by mental medicine. “If a student does not participate in every field, it will be turned into a river which has no flow. It will be house for algae, frogs and formidable insects.

The trend of Indian politics has turned into house politics. Indian democracy became ochlocracy and kleptocracy. A student must realize his onus to safeguard the nation. Ancient Greek model is an excellent model. Every young person must join the army. He has to do his service until 35 years. Then, he becomes a politician afterwards. When he retires, he becomes clergy. This is direct democracy. Student must know the possibilities and have influence on them.

3.Student as a Man of Erudition:

A student should get erudition through discipline. He should be helpful to the nation. He is one who can learn, challenge and achieve. A student must be a man of action rather than a dreamer. A student is young soldier who safeguards his nation. When he gets erudition, then only he can challenge ordeals. That is why IAS, IPS examinations are based on erudition.

4. Student as a Selfless Person:

Our nation became corrupted because of selfishness. There is no justice without graft. This should be revoked. For every innovation, real person behind it should be honored. A student must be selfless and teach and lead other students. This forms a group which can lead to a better society which gives best nation.

5.Student as a Bridge:

Student must be a bridge between present generation and past generation. He must take suggestions from pre-generation and guide the post generation. This will help to secure the knowledge and growth of nation.

Conclusion:

Leaders are not borne, but they are made. For this, student life is appropriate stage. Hitler, who harbored hatred towards Jews in his student life, made him notorious. The persons who had hard-working as weapon in their student life, they were turned into great personalities. Student is a vital organ for the development of society and nation. He has to incorporate all the above mentioned principles in life.

SOIL DEGRADATION

The nation that destroys its soil, destroys itself

~ Franklin D. Roosevelt

What is soil degradation-

Soil degradation is the decline in soil condition caused by its improper use or poor management, usually for agricultural, industrial or urban purposes.

Causes of soil degradation-

The loss of farm land has been caused by a number of factors,

many or most of which are tied to human development. The primary causes are:

·         Deforestation

·         Overgrazing

·         Overexploitation for fuel wood

·         Agricultural activities

·         Increased flooding

·         Industrialization.

The following figure illustrates the relative sizes of the causal mechanism as a function of region

On the global basis, the soil degradation is caused primarily by overgrazing (35%), agricultural activities (28%), deforestation (30%), over exploitation of land to produce fuel wood (7%), and industrialization (4%).

The main reasons for unproductiveness or degradation of soils are as follows:

1. Nutrient disorder

2. Water-logging

3. Salinity

4. Erosion

5. Biological degradation

6. Other causes

Impact of Soil Degradation:

The following are the impacts of soil degradation:

1. Degradation leads to reduction in crop yield in the affected lands and a possible decline in cropping intensity.

2. In extreme cases, soil becomes unfit for cultivation.

3. Silting of drainage, canals, rivers and reservoirs results in increased floods and droughts.

4. In some cases farmers use more fertilizer inputs to compensate reduced soil productivity while in other cases, they use excess fertilizers.

5. The rate of siltation in many water reservoirs are significantly high. According to Central Water Commission (1991), nearly 11 per cent of the total capacity of water reservoirs has been silted.

6. Soil degradation has several adverse impacts on the environment. It affects global climate through alterations in water cycle and energy balances and disruptions of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur cycles.

The estimated annual loss of different crops due to soil degradation ranges from Rs. 89 billion to 232 billion which represent a loss of 11 to 26 per cent yield.

Control of erosion-

(Adapted from ACS Distance Education 2009)

As erosion is caused by the effects of wind and water, control methods are generally aimed at modifying these effects. The following list describes some of the most common control methods:

·         Prevention of soil detachment by the use of cover materials such as plants.

·         Crop production techniques (e.g. fertilizing with organic fertilizer), to improve soil characteristics and promote plant growth and hence surface cover.

·         Ploughing to destroy rills and contour planting to create small dams across a field, to retard or impound water flow.

·         Filling small gullies with mechanical equipment or conversion into a protected or grassed waterway.

·         Terracing of slopes to reduce rates of runoff.

·         Prevention of erosion in the first place by careful selection of land use practices.

·         Conservation tillage methods.

·         Armoring of channels with rocks, tires, concrete and timber to prevent bank erosion.

·         The use of wind breaks to modify wind action.

·         Ploughing into clod sizes too big to be eroded, or ploughing into ridges.

Conclusion-

People can be a major asset in reversing a trend towards degradation. However, they need to be healthy and politically and economically motivated to care for the land as subsistence agriculture, poverty, and illiteracy can lead important causes of land and environmental degradation especially in Zambia which has inadequate laws and policies aimed directly at preventing land degradation.

The criminality of marital rape in India

It is appalling that in this day and age, India still remains a part of the 36 countries in which marital rape is not legal. About 70 per cent of women in India are victims of domestic violence. National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) ‘Crime in India’ 2019 report shows that a woman is raped every 16 minutes, and every four minutes, she experiences cruelty at the hands of her in-laws. An analysis of National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2015-16 data indicates that an estimated 99.1 per cent of sexual violence cases go unreported and that the average Indian woman is 17 times more likely to face sexual violence from her husband than from others.

This is because of the rape culture that is still entrenched in Indian society. Women are considered to be their husbands’ chattel in marriages rather than equal partners, and this reflected itself in the skewed adultery law that was amended because it was discriminatory towards women. Whilst there is great outrage over stranger rapes that are covered with big headlines in newspapers, we must remember that the biggest bearers of sexual violence do not have the social capital to come out with their stories because our society does not understand that consent can be withdrawn in a marriage as well.

This societal disease infiltrates into our legal and governmental establishment as well. Powerful ministers making sexist statements is not unheard of, and judges making their judgements in rape cases to blame the victim are commonplace. This institutional rot cannot be cured without striking the problem at its root.

It is true that legal minutiae have very little impact on the day-to-day affairs of most people in the country, but the law sets a precedent. We all know the legal ban on untouchability has not stopped the practice, but the illegality of it guides the moralities of people and draws a line between what is normal in a civilised society and what is not. Hence, it is important that are laws are amended to deem marital rape a criminal offence that merits high punishment for us to progress as a society.

Groundwater crisis in India

Ever since the Green Revolution, farmers’ dependence on intensive inputs like water and fertilizers has resulted in the serious depletion of the underground water table, in many states across the country.

Farming is becoming increasingly unsustainable in these regions, as the map shows, and there is a heavy need to switch to more sustainable alternatives. However, the reverse has happened. Policymakers have only incentivized more groundwater usage through credit and subsidies for groundwater extraction equipment as well as low electricity tariffs that lead to excessive water usage. This is catastrophic – good for short-term profit, but soon the marginal output of farms will start decreasing and the environment would be beyond recovery.

The choice of crops is also important – being water-abundant, the east is more suited to growing water-intensive crops like sugarcane and paddy. But differences in electricity supply have ensured that such crops have not found a place in their natural habitat. On the other hand, electricity subsidies and tariffs in the south and west India, regions with low water tables, encouraged sugarcane and paddy cultivation, draining these regions of their already low groundwater.

The need of the hour is to switch to surface water irrigation and other sustainable alternatives to groundwater depletion before it’s too late, and to prioritize crop growing according to what is most sustainable. The government must realize that short-term revenue cannot be the altar at which nature is sacrificed, and that it is for the benefit of all parties involved that unsustainable farming practices are discouraged.
