Analysing the first 10 pages of ‘the immortals of meluha’

  1. Meet the protagonist. Exposition through inner monologue

Things established:

  • Today is special
  • Shiva is currently troubled
  • Bhadra is a trusted associate

In the first page itself, three important peices of information are given to the reader, but reasons are not specified, yet.

2. Important plot point introduced and dramatic question.

  1. Shiva does NOT like battle or bloodshed of any kind (important character description)

2. New character introduced(not explained)

Introduction of a character through another character is my favorite form of introduction. It helps in creating a sort of mystery around the character also the reader starts to get their own opinions on the character that the writer can later mould.

3.The most important part: A dramatic question is raised—Will Shiva accept the offer to go to Meluha?

3. About the protagonist and establishing stakes

  1. Again Shiva’s displeasure towards violence is reinforced.
  2. Information about bhadra and Shiva’s relationship and its change after Shiva became the chief is given.
  3. Shiva’s Uncle is introduced in the story.

All three of these things are developed further in the book.

4.Activity

  1. The name of the character previously introduced is revealed
  2. An idea introduced: There is a mention of a greater destiny, this will be present in the readers subconcious mind throughout the story until its explained.
  3. Again, the Readers are given more trivia about shiva’s uncle thus establishing him as an important person in Shivas life.

Just as the readers start to think about the idea, a violent scene takes place so as to bring the readers in an active state of mind. This scene helps both the protagonist as as well as the readers to form a strong opinion on the darmatic question.

5. Answering the dramatic question.

  • The dramatic question is answered.

They are going to meluha.

6. The showdown

Again there is attack from the prakritis but this time this scene shows Shiva letting the prakriti soldiers to go without harming them.

This is an illustration of the character description in the beginning:

They arent blood-thirsty idiots.

When will this violence end.

The Immortals of Meluha

And now in the end of the scene we see what we’ve been waiting all along, Meluha.

Amish sets up the story in such a way that within a few pages the plot is explained, stakes are made clear, relationships are established and we know enough about protagonist.

Amish nails the most important textbook rule of writing:

Set up immediately, don’t make the reader wait.

The rest of the book also follows the example of the beginning. It doesn’t drag, its precise and to the point. Overall immortals of meluha is a engaging and interesting book, definately deserves a read.

About the Book
The book intends to present a critique of some select, 21st Century, hard science fiction novels in order to explicate the various ways in which the elements of posthumanism, transhumanism,
techno-singularity, interact and intersect with other such ideas as monstrosity, animality, machinicity, postanthropocentrism, and Anthropocene. The study divides its analysis into seven different
chapters and attempts to present an elaborate study on various aspects of posthumanism, transhumanism, and singularity. The book despite being a collection of miscellaneous essays actually intends
to show how a technologically mediated transhuman/posthuman culture will normally be defined by a total dissolution of binaries and human digital and real, and machine and man.

How to read more books

As New Year’s Eve approaches, many people are thinking about their goals and resolutions for 2020. Reading more books is one of the most common resolutions. Maybe you didn’t read as many books as you wanted to this year. Maybe your TBR is getting out of control. Or maybe you read a lot this year, but want to do even better next year. Regardless, these tips to read more books will help you meet your reading goals in 2020.

The tips below will help you find ways to fit more reading into your schedule, prevent burnout, and reach your goals. Keep in mind that not everything works for everyone. Find inspiration in this list, but you don’t have to take all of the advice listed here to read more books. Remember that reading should be fun and interesting, not torture. That said, I hope this list helps you fulfill your reading dreams.

1. MAKE READING PART OF YOUR ROUTINE

The best way to consistently read more is to intentionally dedicate more time to reading. Seems easy, right? The best way to make sure you keep your reading resolution through the whole year is to integrate reading time into your regular routine. Wake up a little earlier each day and read while you drink your coffee, dedicate the half hour before bedtime to reading, or spend your lunch breaks with a book. As you make reading a regular part of your schedule, it will become an ingrained habit.

2. LEARN TO DOUBLE TASK

There are only so many hours in the day, right? But if you learn to double task, you double your hours. Read a book while you’re doing something else that doesn’t require your full attention. I like to read or listen to books while working out, cooking, cleaning, and even walking. Just save the really complex books for when you can give them your undivided attention.

3. ALWAYS HAVE A BOOK

When you have a book, you’ll never get bored. You’d be surprised how many moments in your day can be filled with reading if you have a book handy. Waiting for the bus, in line at the grocery, at the doctor’s office, even in a long elevator ride—all are perfect opportunities to squeeze in a few more pages. If you don’t like carrying around a physical book, I highly recommend carrying an ereader or having a reading app downloaded on your phone.

4. SET A GOAL

It’s much easier to read more books when you set a reading goal. With a goal in mind, you can stay motivated and make sure you’re staying on track to reach it. The Goodreads Reading Challenge is an excellent way to track your goal, as it can tell you how you’re doing and help you stay on schedule. But make sure the goal you set is attainable; it will only discourage you if you set a goal you aren’t able to reasonably reach.

5. READ WITH YOUR EARS

LISTENING TO AUDIOBOOKS IS NOT CHEATING. We all learn and retain information in different ways, and audiobooks are one of many ways to enjoy a good book. Audiobooks are amazing when it comes to multitasking. You can listen to an audiobook while driving, exercising, walking, and so much more. Plus it’s a great way to avoid eye fatigue when you’ve been reading a lot of print or ebooks. If you’re new to audiobooks or don’t know if they can work for you, I recommend starting with a memoir by a celebrity author you admire, like We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union. Alternatively, try a collection of essays or short stories that can be listened to in shorter bursts, like We Are Never Meeting in Real Life by Samantha Irby.

6. JOIN A BOOK CLUB

Book clubs are a great way to hold yourself accountable to your reading goal. First, scheduled book club meetings encourage you to finish a book by a certain date. Second, the social aspect of book clubs is a great way to feel more engaged in your reading and to discuss your thoughts with others. Third, books selected by a book club relieve some of the “what do I read next?” pressure that can keep you from picking up your next book. If you commit to a monthly book club, that’s 12 books toward your annual reading goal!

I hope these tips help you to reach your bookish goals!

Thank you.

5 must read books for young adults (non-fiction)

We talk a lot about all of the hottest new fiction (and old faves), but there’s a ton of great nonfiction out there, too. And a lot of it focuses on topics and stories that you should know about so we thought it was time to give the genre a little love. Because great stories keep you turning pages, whether they are made up or true-to-life!

1. March

ICYMI, John Lewis is a congressman from Georgia, and he’s kind of a big deal.

You may have seen him featured in David Letterman’s recent interview with Barack Obama. He’s one of the key figures of the civil rights movement, and his commitment to justice and nonviolence has taken him from a segregated schoolroom to the 1963 March on Washington and from receiving beatings from state troopers to receiving the Medal of Freedom.

March is the first in a graphic novel trilogy, and you should totally pick it up to learn more about this American icon.

2. This Land is Our Land: A History of American Immigration

Immigration is a hot-button issue these days. And American attitudes towards immigrants are paradoxical.

On the one hand, we see our country as a haven for the poor and oppressed; anyone, no matter his or her background, can find freedom here and achieve the “American Dream.” On the other hand, we set boundaries and restrictions on who may come to this country and whether they may become citizens.

If you’re looking to know more about the backstory of immigration in the U.S., particularly the ways in which government policy and popular responses to immigrant groups has evolved, check out This Land is Our Land.

3. Blood, Bullets, and Bones

If you are a fan of mysteries and crime scene drama, you have to check out this fascinating look at the ever-changing science of forensics.

Author Bridget Heos uses real-life cases to tell the history of modern forensic science, from the first test for arsenic poisoning to fingerprinting, firearm and blood spatter analysis, DNA evidence, and more. By turns captivating and shocking, Blood, Bullets, and Bones demonstrates the essential role forensic science has played in our criminal justice system.

4. Dear Bully

Have you ever been bullied? Have you ever witnessed bullying? You are not alone, and Dear Bully will prove it.

Seventy of today’s top authors come together to share their stories about bullying — as silent observers on the sidelines of high school, as victims, and as perpetrators — in a collection at turns moving and self-effacing, but always deeply personal.

5. The 57 Bus: A True Story of Two Teenagers and the Crime That Changed Their Lives

If it weren’t for the 57 bus, Sasha and Richard never would have met.

Both were high school students from Oakland, California, one of the most diverse cities in the country, but they inhabited different worlds. Each day, their paths overlapped for a mere eight minutes. But one afternoon on the bus ride home from school, a single reckless act left Sasha severely burned, and Richard charged with two hate crimes and facing life imprisonment.

The case garnered international attention, thrusting both teenagers into the spotlight.

I hope you like this list.

Thank you.

Wealth Creation through Equity Investing

Wealth creation through equity investing is an intensive exercise requiring special skills and knowledge backed by extensive market and company research and thorough understanding of the subtleties of the market behavior. Whereas equity investing beats the inflation and is an ideal instrument of investment for growth by delivering higher rate of return compared to fixed return instruments, the associated risks must be kept in view that equity is a volatile instrument whose prices change every day and any negative sentiment/news/adverse happening would erode the principal investment. It is only the intelligent and perceptive investor who makes money in both rising and falling markets.

With a view to understand the nuances of equity investing, how equities create wealth in the long run, understanding the difference between growth vis-à-vis value investing, why high quality companies trade at high multiples, the capital market experts will guide the readers with their experience. The underlying reasons why PSUs have not performed in spite of their inherent strengths will also be discussed in different chapters.

SOCIAL, CULTURAL AND POLITICAL PERSPECTIVE ON SLUMS

Rapid urbanization represents major threats and challenges to personal and public health. The World Health Organisation identifies the ‘urban health threat’ as three-fold: infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases; and violence and injury from, amongst other things, road traffic. Within this tripartite structure of health issues in the built environment, there are multiple individual issues affecting both the developed and the developing worlds and the global north and south.
Reflecting on a broad set of interrelated concerns about health and the design of the places we inhabit, this book seeks to better understand the interconnectedness and potential solutions to the problems associated with health and the built environment. Divided into three key themes: home, city, and society, each section presents a number of research chapters that explore global processes, transformative praxis and emergent trends in architecture, urban design and healthy city research. Drawing together practicing architects, academics, scholars, public health professional and activists from around the world to provide perspectives on design for health, this book includes emerging research on: healthy homes, walkable cities, design for ageing, dementia and the built environment, health equality and urban poverty, community health services, neighbourhood support and wellbeing, urban sanitation and communicable disease, the role of transport infrastructures and government policy, and the cost implications of ‘unhealthy’ cities etc. To that end, this book examines alternative and radical ways of practicing architecture and the re-imagining of the profession of architecture through a lens of human health.

EDITED BOOK Background

Slums is typically understood to involve all aspects of residential areas. Slums is studied by wide range of schoalrs. They include sociologists, human geographers, public health professionals, architects, planners, and urban designers, to mention just a few.
Sociologists study the life of communities in our cities, towns and neighbourhoods. Human geographers research issues ranging from into the migrations of people from rural to urban to the socio-political settings and the patterns of life and activity that characterise cities across the world. Public health professionals today continue the work of over two centuries in their field concerned with the city as an important site for public health debates. Examples in recent years include the Healthy Cities initiative developed by the World Health Organisation and multiple governmental and NHS projects to promote notions such as the ‘walkable city’, not to mention the health, community and social agenda promoted by the UN Habitat programme.
All of this research and activity of course happens alongside, and in collaboration with, those academics and professionals engaged in the built environment in more traditional ways. Architects form example have long engaged in designing buildings while working with social groups and communities on ‘community design’ projects and collaborating with the public to create more ‘human’ city environments. Urban planners obviously work with policy makers and architects directly, but are also now fully embedded in community participation exercises involving human geographers and sociologists. At an even larger regional planning level these issues are linked to government policy of community regeneration and a broader narrative on public health and healthy living that encourages active lifestyles and thus, walkable and bicycle friendly city streets.

Edited Book Chapters Rationale

Slum is an inherently interdisciplinary phenomenon. However, currently, this reality is only partially reflected in literature that periodically explores specific aspects of this interdisciplinary field, but has not yet developed a coherent platform on which to explore the full range and depth of the cross disciplinary nature of life in our cities, their physical infrastructure, their planning policies, health implications and community bonds. As a result, there is a need to develop a platform that supports research into the built environment of cities across disciplines such as sociology, human geography, community and political studies in a coherent and interconnected way.
In serving this role, the series will make a major contribution to the most embedded field of built environment studies (architecture, urban design, planning) and make significant contributions to those fields that inevitably engage with it in the course of their own specific studies (such as sociology, human geography, public health and community studies etc).
The series promises to become a fundamental reference point to scholars across disciplines in the India and further afield, giving multiple disciplines a platform to interconnect and learn from each other. It is expected to establish a clear interdisciplinary definition and reference point for the multiple perspectives and approaches to research in, and related to, the built environment.

Book Review:- Good to Great

Experts say that books are portable magic. They’d transform you from an ordinary, demotivated soul to an extravagant fighter.

Books are a sanctuary for every individual with a spontaneous imagination; they are friends in the loneliest of times and they are teachers.

They are proof that time travel does exist because a book enables the voice of the writer to escape the shackles of time and speak out to the reader through its pages.

1. Good to Great: Why some companies make the leap…and others don’t

Summary:

This book is definitely one of the best books to read, known to open doors for those who are struggling to make the leap and add a little extra to their ordinary and become extraordinary; it has proven to generate a lot of revenue.

This book has been written and based on a lot of research and carries careful evaluations.

The author of “Good to Great: Why some companies make the leap … and others don’t”, Jim Collins, was very curious about the factors that make a company sustainable. Good to Great has been constructed on the basis of his hard work and the results of his findings; which makes the book all the more amazing.

The book enabled six companies to take the leap from good to great! The book includes the six ingredients that the transit from good to great require. They are bound to change your life.

Want to know what the book is all about?

It is based on the best Management strategies out there!

“Some of the key concepts discerned in the study,” comments Jim Collins, “fly in the face of our modern business culture and will, quite frankly, upset some people.”

Reviews:

Perry Leon talked about the influence the book had on her life while writing her Campaign Blog and talked about how she would rate it as probably the top three business books of all times.

She went to reply to a question about what she had taken from the book, “I took from it that you should focus on key competencies and not get distracted by the other stuff.”

She rates it as one of the top books of all time and goes on to say that it should be included in every piece written on business books and self-help books because it has really helped her.

PROS:-

Helps you deal with people from corporate world

Motivate entrepreneurs towards valid conversation.

Covers a broad spectrum of management practices

CONS:-

Does not cover anything other than management

Too long to read the same content over and over
Slight theoretical; less motivational

Must-Read Books for Young Adults

Books have played an important role in shaping personalities since the fifteenth-century Print Revolution. It could be argued that they were a cultural force even before the printing press was invented, as manuscripts were popular among the nobility across kingdoms and empires. As rapid technological changes took place in the are of mass communication, books became popular among young adults. Even today, books about the unique struggles and aspirations of the youth are received with warmth by the general public. Non-fiction masterpieces by the likes of Plato and Aristotle to Maya Angelou and Yuval Noah Harari are considered essential for a child’s transition to adulthood. In no particular order, I present to you my list of books that are essential for a young adult, keeping in mind their readability and relevance to today’s world.

– I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou (1969)

The Nobel Laureate and civil rights activist need no introduction. Her autobiography explores themes like racial prejudice, abandonment and rape candidly. Her writing underlined the prejudices of American society and their effects on young minds. The book speaks of the helplessness of the child who does not know of racism, who grows up believing in the lies of the society. It encapsulates the struggle that comes with living in a racist world and how different people deal with it. The book explores how a whitewashed neo-imperial narrative emasculates and humiliates coloured pride, and depicted the resistance raised by the people of colour. Her long journey from insecurity and shame to become a remarkable woman who inspired a generation of black women is inspiring to all, irrespective of their background.

-. A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking (1988)

Hailed as the greatest scientists of our time, Stephen Hawking beautifully explained some of the most complex concepts in Physics for the average person to understand. I consider his book to be a must-read, mainly because of its exhaustive and comprehensive nature. The book makes clever use of humour to put laymen at ease and this quality has led to its widespread popularity among the younger generations. If you’ve ever wondered how the universe came into existence and where will it be a billion years from now, you’ve chosen the right book to read.

-My Experiments with Truth, Mahatma Gandhi (1927)

The Mahatma is widely credited as the champion of the poor and the oppressed, and this book is a peek into his saintly life. In the book, he mentions the events that shaped his life and inspired him to devote all of his energy for the upliftment of the poor. Despite his larger-than-life stature, Gandhi was a common man with very grounded concerns and objectives, and the book is a testament to that. Satyagraha, or non-violent agitation, which has considerably influenced India’s mass movements is taken up by him as a topic. His methods of living a worthy life are simple and easy-to-adopt, which along with his clear narration, have contributed to the popularity of the book.

-The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini (2003)

The novel speaks of the heart-breaking struggles of people living in war-torn areas. It is a story of redemption as much as it is one of the unbreakable bonds. Set against the backdrop of the Afghan War, the story follows the journey of Amir from when he was a boy till when he became the man his Baba wanted him to be. It paints a painstakingly accurate picture of father-son relationships. The book won critical acclaim due to its coverage of real people that are caught in the political cross-fire. The warm and bustling Kabul we see in the beginning is lost in rubble by the end of the decade. The echoes of what could have been stayed with us for a long time after we finished the book, acquainting us with the reality on the other side of the world.

-To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee (1960)

A Pulitzer Prize winner, the novel became widely popular due to its depiction of racism and inequality from a child’s perspective. The story revolves around Scout, Jeremy and Atticus Finch, who live in the fictional Southern town of Maycomb. The book makes us question long-held beliefs and prejudices by looking at them through the innocent lens of a child. We mourn the injustice done to Tom Robinson which is compared to the senseless killing of songbirds. the narrative artfully questions the dehumanisation of the ‘others’ by a society who revels in the misfortune of others.

Books : Your Friendly Companion

https://in.pinterest.com/

A man cannot simply feel contended by earning bread alone. The mind must be fed with literature, knowledge & ethics for functioning in the right path. One can simply do it by reading books of their favourite genre. And if you are a beginner grab a book that can hold down your interest & a comparatively thinner book. This is the common psychology that every significant reader holds in their initial days.

So after the invention of printing by Caxton, different kinds of books in different linguals have flooded bookstalls in every country. But in recent years, as everything is being sought for its alternatives & so are reading books, journals, magazines & newspapers. One can access all of the above-mentioned through different pages on the internet in blog forms or applications. A good book is defined to be the one that makes readers feel good about it. Reading one may feel the urge to make a difference in their life. Again some books in the market compel readers to hold a different viewpoint to each different reader. Good books are like those of Tagore, Bankim, Shakespeare & Tolstoy that can be the constant companions in their loneliness & even in their weals & woes.

Books of Bibhutibhushan Banerjee or Rabindranath are the kinds that free our minds from depressions & sorrows. While the poetry books of Keats & Wordsworth generate a sense of sweet feelings, pleasant moments & philosophical thoughts. Such books can help one to strengthen their mental power & imparts a calming effect at the time of catastrophes. Again a book on criticism gives us a balanced judgment & appreciation.

On the contrary, a thriller tends to take away all the dullness & boredom from one’s mind. A science book helps one to widen their knowledge of the physical world & makes them keep abreast of the latest phase of human progress. An illustrated book on travel creates a hypnotic influence on one’s mind.

A visit to paradise for a book lover would be a book fair. Moreover, it’s a bonus if it is of a wholesale kind. Such an event provides enough scope for bibliophiles to quench their thirst for knowledge. A swarm of readers from all over throng the place. Even book launch events of certain authors are quite an enthusiastic event for book lovers. This gives them a chance to listen & interact with their favourite authors, totally a fanboying moment.
