Value of an MBA

What Value Does An MBA Course Provide?

An excellent question and if you’re asking it you may already have an idea about what it is you’re looking for. A Master of Business Administration covers a lot and as a result, its benefits can be far-reaching but also difficult to detect without a guide, so let’s take a look at some of the direct and indirect consequences of studying an MBA that may lead you into taking the course.

What do you study for an MBA?

The main things that any MBA is directed towards are developing leadership skills and administrative models, two things that are critical to any business but have a wide degree of application and scope. For example, a manager may have good leadership skills but may need the help of a productivity model (such as an Agile or Waterfall model) in order to help keep all their staff on the same page. Conversely, different leadership styles are required in large companies where departments are separated and communicate through liaisons, or small companies where every department works directly with and around each other. An MBA is designed to teach you how to work over, with and around multiple styles and setups, vastly improving your ability to work at any level of administration.

However just because leadership skills and administrative models are the main focus of an MBA that does not mean it is the only thing you will learn – far from it! Other skills that are often focused on in an MBA include core subjects like business accounting, local law and public policy, organisational behaviours, communication, the latest in digital marketing theory and techniques, skills for researching the competition and even developing both long and short-term business strategies. Some MBAs also offer additional subjects analysing global trends, data management and analysis, and offer a smattering of education in matters of health and the practices of human resources. Suffice it to say, an MBA covers a lot of information, skills and techniques, and even in the modern era of books, youtube and skill-sharing, you’d be hard-pressed to learn many of these entirely on your own.

What are the Direct and Indirect Benefits of an MBA

The direct benefits are many and are pretty easy to assess for yourself. If you think you need to develop skills in leadership, administrative models, accounting, research, or any of the other items we listed previously then an MBA is already the right choice for you. But there are a large number of indirect benefits that you might want to be aware of as well.

To start with, salary. Even if you already have a secure job, adding an MBA can increase your base salary, or make you more eligible for new opportunities that arise. Recent data suggests that those who have an MBA from Australia have an average Australian MBA salary above $100k a year, and this applies just as much to men as to women – in fact in recent years the rising of women to higher paid administrative roles has been a key component in reducing the overall wage gap between men and women in the workplace. However, there are other benefits as well. Learning to be a leader and adopting productivity models rely heavily on developing and improving social skills both toward those below you, above you and among your direct peers – anyone in business can tell you are often three very different skill sets to maintain.

However one of the more interesting perks of studying an MBA is an improved skill to understand what everyone around you is doing. Every job is a skillset unto itself, but having a firm grasp of how to research other businesses, read accounting documents and relate with both internal staff and external clients can teach you as an administrator a lot about what every other part of your business is doing. Nothing helps a business more than a boss who understands the ins and outs of the business itself, and it helps even more if they have the tools to communicate or teach those skills to others. These are just some of the more indirect benefits that an MBA can provide.

What else? Is it just an increased salary, better bargaining position, a plethora of skills and an overall increase in quality? Not at all. Many of the skills needed for business are skills you can use in everyday life, but exactly which skills will help you the most could depend greatly on how you want to specialise. Fortunately, most MBAs offer specialised electives to help better direct your studies to cover exactly what you’re interested in.

Porter’s Five Forces Model

Porter’s 5 Forces Model is a business model and a tool which helps in identifying main competitive forces of an industry or a sector. The 5 Forces Model is mainly used to create a corporate strategy which will help a company to enhance its long- term profitability.

Understanding Porter’s Five Forces Model

The 5 Forces Model was created by Harvard Business School’s Professor Michael E. Porter and was published in his book “Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors” in 1980. The model was created to explain why various industries are able to maintain varying level of profitability. Porter’s 5 Forces helps in analyzing the industry of the company so that a company can adjust their corporate strategy, boost their profitability and beat their competition.

What are the five forces of the Porter’s Model?

  • Competition in the industry
  • Potential of new entrants into the industry
  • Power of Suppliers
  • Power of Customers
  • Threat of substitute products

Competition in the Industry

For most industry, the level of competition in the industry determines the positioning of the product in the market. The intense the competition in the market, the more the company has to focus on innovation, marketing, price, etc. of the product. When the competition is less, a company has more authority to charge higher prices and establish the terms of deals in order to increase sales and profits.

Potential of New Entrants into the Industry

A company’s positioning is also affected by the new entrants in the market.  This in turn puts pressure on prices, costs, and the rate of investment needed to sustain a business within the industry. The less the time, money and effort it takes for a competitor to enter the market, more is the threat for a company to lose its market share. On the contrary, if there are strong barriers to entry in the industry, companies more secure about their market share.

Power of Suppliers

Power of suppliers in a market means how easily suppliers can increase the cost of the inputs. The suppliers’ power in the market is determined by the factors like number of suppliers in the market, uniqueness of the inputs they provide, cost of switching a supplier for a company. If the number of suppliers in an industry is less, a company would depend more on its current supplier, thus giving more power to supplier in terms of cost of inputs and other advantages in trade. However, if the suppliers are more in the market, then company has the advantage of switching the supplier in case the supplier increases the price or if a company finds a cheap supplier, thus keeping their input costs low and increasing their profitability.

Power of Customers

Customers are more powerful in an industry when there are less number of customers in an industry and more number of suppliers. Because the client base for a company is smaller and more strong, each customer has greater negotiating leverage to get better rates and deals. A company with a large number of smaller, independent consumers will find it easier to raise prices and increase profits.

Threat of Substitute Products

A substitute is a product or service that can be easily replaced with another by consumers. In economics, products are often substitutes if the demand for one product increases when the price of the other goes up. When there are no close substitutes in the market, a company can take advantage of charging higher prices. However, if there is availability of close substitutes, customers will switch to substitutes in case of increase of the prices of the products of a company.

Understanding Porter’s Five Forces and how they apply to a particular industry can help a company change its business plan to make better use of its resources and generate more profits for its shareholders.

Is INSEAD better than HARVARD

You know you want to join a business school and not just anyone but the best one. Choosing the best business school can be a daunting task considering the thousands of schools out there that are best in their own way. So now what to do? How to choose amongst the best? Making the right decision will require hard work, patience, perseverance, and a lot more. What if you get two options amongst the best business school. Will then it be easier for you to choose? These are some of the things which will come to your mind while choosing a business school.

The topic of discussion here is: Is INSEAD a better business school than Harvard Business School. Well, this one is a tough one to decide. INSEAD and HBS, both are in the top 5 list of best business schools. Ultimately both universities are best. They are the most prestigious business schools in the world. Both are lavish in terms of campus and excellent in terms of academics. Indeed, a very difficult question to answer. Let’s understand both respectively.

Harvard University, established in 1636, is one of the oldest institutions in the United States. Harvard Business School (HBS) is the business school of Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. It offers a large full-time MBA program, management-related doctoral programs, and many executive education programs. HBS offers a two-year full-time MBA program with a general management curriculum. On the other hand, INSEAD was founded in 1957. It is a renowned European business school with campuses in France, Singapore, and UAE. INSEAD offers a 10-month MBA program with more than 75 electives to choose from.

In terms of the course content taught there will be hardly any difference. Now you might think that INSEAD gets packed in 10 to 12 months and Harvard is approximately 22 months. So how is that there is barely any course difference? So, let me just clarify this if you study at INSEAD, almost 80% of the syllabus is taught in those 10 months what is taught at Harvard in 22 months. So, picking a business school in terms of the course content there is hardly any difference. This point gives a +1 score to INSEAD.

Now when it comes to expense, a 1-year MBA program is relatively cheaper than a 2-year MBA program. So, in terms of expense, INSEAD is a better option. INSEAD is the right door to knock when you don’t have good financial backing. Now in terms of community, Harvard dominantly consists of Americans. On the other hand, INSEAD invites applications from all over the world. So, in terms of building a community network, INSEAD is most preferred. INSEAD has multiple campuses and it also offers an exchange program bringing diversity. The entrepreneurship and alumni network are stronger in INSEAD than in Harvard. INSEAD has an alumni network more global than anyone can imagine.

In terms of brand, Harvard itself is a brand. It has a global brand name and it is known across the industries. However, INSEAD has a brand name that is not always known to the masses especially in America. Harvard cannot be estimated as it holds a lot of Weightage not only in America but also worldwide. If you are looking for a job in the USA, then Harvard should be your destination and vice-versa.

INSEAD is a better choice for certain students who want to do MBA than Harvard. Nevertheless, that does not mean that HBS is in any way subordinate to INSEAD. Both have their pros and cons. It depends upon an individual where he/she wants to study. Saying that INSEAD is better than Harvard will do injustice to the latter.

Is Digital a future ?

As a student of marketing we all believe that we are goanna be placed well and we are opportunistic but is that real ? . if u ask me its a big no things will not be standard untill we graduate. we all are being lied that we are gonna be placed in a good company but the truth is.

How do we prepare ourselves for the better future ?

Its simple for us to say work hard but that will be so funny when you cant find rightful resources when this internet is full of ads and paid E – Commerce sites to take our attention away.now let me say how you can prepare yourself best way to learn something is to learn yourself . set a proper goal and try to learn each and everything related to those thing not only learning will help us we have to implement practically.

How to learn digital marketing ?

Digital marketing is nothing new without knowing we are already in digital marketing for example YouTube , Twitter , Instagram , Facebook and so on are the important platform of digital marketing . So , try to create your own website lets a gaming channel or whatever you like and try to find a way to attract people with your contents and make sure you do learn something from it . Don’t make a large investment before you get something in return and try to monetize yourself.

Digital marketing a future

In 90’s people bought products based on what they say on advertisement but now people dont have time watch tv’s and most of them have changed to smart TV so marketing needed a change then came the digital marketing i wont say that advertisement will be total failure that’s for a different conversation . Now its about DM a survey says that Internet users across India spend nearly six and half hours online daily in the third quarter of 2020. by another 5 years it will be doubled so DM is the only way to make people see our product . so people who are planning to take marketing as a career should concentrate on his/her skills on digital marketing ( e- mail , YouTube , twitter , Facebook marketing )
