The emergence of ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) in 1969 by the United States Department of Defense and NSFNET (National Science Foundation Network) in 1987 by the National Science Foundation was crucial for laying the technical foundation of the Internet.
The Timeline:
With the advent of the Internet, there were a lot of communication services coming up in the U.S such as CompuServe, America Online, and Prodigy. They provided users digital communication services through email, bulletin board messaging, and real-time online chatting. But the first online social media is considered to be Six Degrees which was the first platform that made it possible for users to have a profile. A profile is like a virtual character that resembles the user’s identity. Six Degrees was developed by Andrew Weinreich in 1997 and the name was derived from the “six degrees of separation” theory according to which “everyone in the world is connected to everyone else by no more than six degrees of separation”. This platform was shut down in 2000 but is now active again and you can find it with a simple Google search!

A lot of instant messaging applications came up between 1997 and 1999, like AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and Microsoft’s MSN Messenger. Brad Fitzpatrick founded LiveJournal which caused a large number of people to get into blogging.
Friendster was another platform that was launched in March 2003. It allowed users to contact other members, maintain those contacts, and share online content and media with those contacts. Users could share videos, photos, messages, and comments with other members via profiles and networks. it was redesigned as a social gaming platform in June 2011.
Both LinkedIn and MySpace were launched in 2003. LinkedIn was founded as a networking site for career-minded professionals and still remains the social media site of choice for job-seeking people as well as employers looking for qualified professionals. MySpace allowed users to share new music on their profile pages and was the most visited website on the planet by 2006. It was beaten in popularity by Facebook in 2008, which has now grown into a huge networking service that literally everybody knows about.
Modern Social Media:
Facebook was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and his Harvard collegemates and gained popularity over other social media sites because it provided frequently updated content in their News Feed. “The Wall” feature also enabled its users to post publicly. The “Like” button was introduced in 2009 and “The Wall” was replaced by the “Timeline” feature which organized the user’s posts chronologically. Over the years, Facebook has also been the subject of various controversies, including issues related to user privacy, mass surveillance, and political manipulation. The platform has 2.8 billion active monthly users, as of 2020.
Steve Huffman launched Reddit in 2005 as a web-content rating and discussion website where users can vote content up or down. In 2006, Jack Dorsey launched Twitter as a microblogging site where users can post and interact with messages known as “tweets”. As of 2020, Twitter has 186 million active users.
Instagram is another big social media site that was launched in 2010 by Kevin Systrom. It was launched as a photo-sharing website but has now included sharing of media content that can be edited using filters and featuring hashtags. Viewers can like, browse other users’ posts, and view trending content. Instagram was purchased by Facebook in 2012. It has since then come up with several features like messaging, ‘stories’ and live-stream features, and ‘reels’ which allows users to post quick 15, 30, or 60-second video clips. It is said to have 1.386 billion active users as of 2022.
Pinterest was launched in 2010 by Ben Silbermann as an image sharing and social media service site. Users can save and find information using images, GIFs and animated videos. Snapchat is another popular site that was launched in 2011 by Evan Spiegel. Instagram developed its ‘stories’ feature because of the competition from Snapchat which allows users to post pictures and messages that are available only for a short time.
Other popular social media platforms include TikTok, which was founded in 2016 by a Chinese company called ByteDance. Users can post very short videos on the site and it has rapidly grown to be hugely popular among teens and young adults across the world. As of 2021, it has about 1 billion users, even though it has been banned in various countries due to issues with content and security.
Over the years, social media has grown from being a place for people to connect with friends and family, to also being a major platform for businesses and corporations. Sponsored advertisements have been a part of all the modern social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Companies use organic social media marketing to increase brand awareness, develop and nurture relationships with customers, generate leads and increase conversions, and learn from competitors. Zomato is an Indian food delivery aggregator app, other than delivery food from various partnered restaurants under one roof, it also provides concrete information regarding the restaurant, that includes the menu, reviews, pricing and more.
The founders Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah launched Foodiebay, a food directory website in 2008, and later rebranded it as Zomato in 2010. And since then the growth of Zomato has been phenomenal despite of having few ups and downs. The company is one of India’s first food-tech unicorn.
Origin of Zomato
The founders of Zomato, Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah who are both IIT Delhi graduates worked as analysts at Bain and Company, Delhi. One day at their office they realised that there were a lot people who were waiting for a long time just to get a flash of the menu card at a nearby café. And at that moment, they came up with a solution to put an end to such inconveniences. And thus, Foodiebay was launched.
Foodiebay gained tremendous user base and growth rate, and within nine months of its launch, it became the largest restaurant directory in Delhi NCR. It initially started out in Delhi and eventually extended their services to Mumbai and Kolkata, and now all across India. After having two successful years, the founders decided to go international. After being backed by investors and little modification, Foodiebay was rebranded to be called Zomato in 2010.
In 2012, Zomato started its international with its UAE launch and eventually launching its services in Europe and South Asia. In 2015, it launched Zomato Gold, which is a membership program in which consumers can avail exclusive deal at Gold-tagged restaurants.
Struggles of Zomato
Zomato had a good start to the business till 2014, as it had a fully functional international service, however things took a turn since 2015, and it went through a ‘make or break’ point. In 2015, Zomato laid off 300 employees to curb losses. In the same year, Zomato acquired Urbanspoon in the USA, and rebranded it as their own company, but things did not go as expected and the venture failed miserably.
In 2016, Zomato had to cut out its services in several countries like the US, UK, Chile, Canada, Brazil, Sri Lanka. Ireland, Italy and more. And when they resumed, Zomato had to resort to remote services. In 2017, Zomato faced its biggest blow as it encountered a cyberattack with a hacker that had breached into 17 million users record from the company database. However, the issue was soon resolved, as the hacker just wanted to prove that there were loopholes in the security system.
In 2019, the #logout campaigned surfaced when the partnered restaurants called out Zomato for consuming their profit margins through, Zomato Gold and Infinity dining service. The restaurants also highlighted unreasonably high commissions and arbitrarily applied additional charges. Post this campaigned Zomato altered Zomato Gold rules and discontinued Infinity dining features. In the following years, Zomato has been involved in a number of other controversies, which have been resolved soon.
Re-establishing Itself
Despite having such controversies, Zomato claims to have registered a rise of 177% of restaurant partners and got on board an additional 73,000 restaurants. Zomato has over 1.4 million listed restaurants and 12,000 restaurant partners aligned with its app, as of August 2021.
Zomato has raised more than $2.1 Billion in funding, and continues to do so. In the 12 years of its journey, Zomato acquired around 14 companies, and one of their biggest acquisition was Uber Eats- India for $206 Million in January 2021.
Despite having tough competitors like Swiggy, Foodpanda, it still managed to generate a revenue of $1 billion in the financial year 2021. And offered Rs 9,375 crore as initial IPO, which opened for subscription during July 14-15 July 2021, and received a strong reception from investors. The public issue was subscribed 38 times, which is the highest in the last 13 years among IPOs valued at more than Rs 5,000 crore.

Social media is internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content, such as personal information, documents, videos, and photos.
The negative effects of mass media on society can lead people towards poverty, crime, nudity, violence, bad mental and physical health disorders and others as such severe outcomes. For example mob hitting innocents by getting carried away from the rumors spread on the internet has been common.Social media, or more specifically news media- plays an important role in democratic societies because they allow for participation among citizens.when it comes to healthy democratic networks, it is crucial that that news remains true so it doesn’t affect citizens levels of trust.Eighty-six percent (86%) of people use social media at least once per day, including 72% who use it multiple times per day. Social media is so popular because it allows people to manage and accomplish their everyday activities. Social media is a great way to connect with people who you may not see all the time. It’s also great for making friends. Social media helps you build connections with kids who have the same interests. It is a quick way for people to get to know each other, even if they’re living across the world from one another.

In India, poverty is presently estimated by fixing a poverty line based on a differentiated calorie-norm. This means that the level of poverty depends upon the capacity of a person to purchase food and a person who can buy specific amount of food to cross the poverty line margin for nutrients and calorie intake is above the poverty line. Whereas, the person who cannot buy enough food to meet the required nutrition value of calories and carbohydrates is below the poverty line. This level is not the correct parameter to check the level of poverty.
A task force of the Planning Commission in 1979 defined the poverty line as that per capita expenditure at which the average per capita per day calorie intake was 2400 calories in rural areas and 2100 calories in urban areas. Average per capita expenditures incurred by that population group in each State which consumed these quantities of calories, as per the 1973-74 survey of NSSO, were used as the poverty lines.
The debate on the extent of poverty in India has been a matter of global interest in the recent years. The primary reason for the global interest in the debate is that the levels of poverty in India and China have come to exert significant influence over the trends in world poverty itself.
Within India too, there has been growing contestation around poverty estimates, particularly in the period of economic reforms. First, there are persistent disagreements among economists on whether the rate of poverty decline after economic reforms was slower than in the preceding period. Secondly, the shift to targeted, rather than universal, welfare schemes has witnessed the use of poverty estimates to decide on the number of households eligible to access these schemes. The report of the Expert Group on the estimation of poverty, chaired by Suresh Tendulkar, is the latest input to the “Great Indian Poverty Debate.”
It is to be noted here that many subsidies and programs are launched by the government but these additional increments do not reach the actual people that are in need of them. Instead it is sent back to the businessman and thus a lot of profit is earned on these subsidized goods. Thus, to lower the level of poverty in India, schemes have to be launched in order to directly benefit the people in need.
The Hindu states that, “A final issue with the report, of much long-term consequence, relates to the wisdom of abandoning the calorie norm. It is indeed true that the levels of calorie intakes are not well correlated with nutritional outcomes. However, abandoning the calorie norm altogether and taking solace from the fortuitous fact that calorie intakes appear adequate at the new poverty lines is an arbitrary proposition. It is unclear whether there is any basis, theoretical or empirical, for this relationship to hold true across time.”
the Tendulkar Committee has pitched for a policy position that is stranded between the harsh realities of poverty in India and the fiscal conservativeness of a neo-liberal framework. The real challenge lies in preserving the positives from the report, and strongly persisting with the demand for a universal social security system.

Being trapped inside the box of “log kya kahenge” is something that we all have faced and we still do even if we deny it. With the parents and guardians being supportive and the youth being overtly conscious and aware of their rights, we, as a generation, as a club of the 2000’s, the “gen-z club” are trying to freely reign the things that we want to do ignoring any type of judgement and pushing away the people who pull us down.
We are conquering the world of nonlinear growth pattern and not focusing on the aligned growth pattern which means that we do not focus on just the “conservative” idea of growth. We do not indulge into working like a robot but focus on a nonaligned growth pattern which means that we not only love to work but also focus on our mental health. We understand that we are not in a rat race and believe in living our lives in a comfortable manner.
Why is mental health important?
There is a clear connection between mental health and academic performance. Mental health is important for person’s growth just like a person’s physical health. Imagine working with a broken arm, will you be able to work? No. Then why should someone with anxiety disorders, paranoia, depression, etc., are expected to work efficiently when they can’t even process their mind the way they want to.

The overuse of social media causes the family to tear apart.According to new research, social media behavior can severely damage real-life relationships.
More and more studies have been released that reveal social media’s harmful role in marriages. Researchers have found that increased social media usage could lead to more relationship problems, infidelity, and even divorce.
The impact of social media is a powerful one. Most often technology can bring forth negative interaction, or zero interaction between siblings, couples, or parent-child. It starves the family of learning and modeling with each other social cues, interpersonal relationship skills, communication skills, and bonding.
Social media is creating new relations with strangers on different platforms, which is good to some extent on one hand whereas on the other hand it’s destroying the real-life relations with the family and beloved ones.
Although social media can keep families in touch even they are far away from each other ,it can create social isolation.
So, social media is doing good to connect people and families in one way but it’s leading to the destruction of family relations on the other side. Hence, it should be used in a limit that too when necessary.

If we see the positive side, there are a number of benefits of social networking. How can we forget that how social media helped Malala Yusufzai become the youngest nominee for the noble peace prize. It were these sites only which made it possible not only for her but for 1000s of girls like her to have higher education. The social media has been playing a crucial role in making today’s teens aware about the events around globe by just one click. Social media has proven to be the fastest medium to update ourselves with daily world events. Social media updates every single second bringing the entire world together every second. Although globalisation has to be given its due credit for bringing the world closer economically and further culturally but it is social media platforms that have made it possible for a person in India to watch a French show at the comfort of their home and without any extra cost. With these social networking sites not only now people could talk, interact, respond to someone in the opposite corner of the world but can also be there without actually being there.
Social networking sites have provided a platform for protesting in some rather unusual but effective ways, from BLACKLIVESMATTER to METOO to BRINGBACKOURGIRLS and many more social media have been proved to be the best way of protesting for the right and just cause. As social media does not connect people from just one city or country but all over the world the movements on social media have a greater impact and helps in bringing greater good in the society. Back in 2013 people from different parts of India were able to raise funds from different campaigns on Facebook, Twitter for Uttrakhand flood victims. In 2014 John Bunnel, a US based sheriff was able to mobilize 5000 youngster for a basic life support training campaign only through Facebook campaign. Our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has been able to reach to a million people of our country on a personal level through his social media and special programme MANN KI BAAT. These sites made a 14 year old boy Ahammad Mohammed in America fight against the injustice he felt in his school for wearing a handmade watch. It was twitter and facebook only that brought on him the focus of the then President of USA Barack Obama and then later earned him a scholarship too.
There is no doubt that in today’s modern era whether it is a motion of physics or politics of civics we can get all the useful links by just a single click. In no means we can deny that internet has changed everything for good and it is social media that has made it so flexible. It only depends on us, how we take it, as a head or as a tail. Social networking is an ever changing fad which in every field from communication to examination has become our supporting tool. Today no one can even imagine a life without these social networking sites. From dusk to dawn, from entertainment to welfare, our lives now run on these media platform platforms. And as harmful as it’s over usage is as beneficial is its appropriate use.
