Charity: When It Changes From Help to Haplessness

Covid and lockdown are two major hits that the country has taken in the last half a year. And needless to say, it left the country wobbly on its knees. Everyone was affected, some more than others. Somewhere affected because of their financial status, some because of their ethnicity, some because of their profession, and some… because of their luck. Now you might ask me, why would I say so? But I have my reasons.

I’m not someone who is on many social media platforms. Just enough to be in touch with the important people in my life. But one doesn’t have to be on all across the social web to have come across at least one picture of charity or donation. Now, many people might have this question, what’s the problem with that? Someone is doing good, so they share with the people. Cool, fair enough. But the point is not about the ones on the giving end. It’s about those  on the receiving one.

When the lockdown first started, the lives inside many houses went into mayhem. With almost no hand in cash, many people were at a loss what to do. With a lion’s share of population depending on the conventional bank and physical withdrawal system, they were stuck at a bad place when it came to financial matters. So for many people, taking the help they were extended was the only viable option. And so they did. But we as a society have a lot many flaws. One of them is looking down at those who we believe are below us. And knowing someone taking external help is a sure indicator. I remember watching a video where a middle aged man was bemoaning how just taking some ration in a donation camp, due to lack of sufficient funds at hand, left him and his family as the laughing and gossip talk of the neighbourhood. His children were asked if the man they saw on Facebook was their father. It was a very distraught experience for everyone.

No one has any rights to comment against anyone posting pictures on social media about anything they did. But people must understand, when they help someone and then post pictures with the other person, that other person gets involved, even if he/she doesn’t like to. And we don’t know what they have to face once they go back to their lives. No one should have to choose between hunger and self respect. Because nobody chooses to be in that position in the first place. Help and charity is an act for self, self satisfaction and self happiness. Not a response to prove oneself to the world.

Problems should be known, talked about and shared. But for the sake of problems. Not for the sake of self. Not when the problem has been taken care of. If so, we need to move to the next one. We need to remember that our primary instincts have always been to help. And in the times of crisis, we need to follow that.

TODAY’S SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media or the internet plays a vital role in our daily lives. Now with these online classes and work from home has proved it’ But there are always advantages and disadvantages.

Social media is a necessity:

Social media is more than a “trend.” It is a means of living. It gets various jobs executed at a time. It constitutes a precise and professional association and establishes you at the front of the profession you want to grow in. it is not a mere extravagance that can be afforded only by affluent people, it has become an essential requirement of life. Because of social media, businesses increase faster and the advertisements of labels and concepts are made for free. Artists and stars have more than one platform to choose from in order to stay connected with their fan base.

Social media builds connection in spite of geographic remoteness:

The Internet epoch has built long-distance interaction dramatically quicker, simpler, and more affordable than ever before. This, it has been claimed, has reduced the consequence of geographic contiguity in social communications, modifying our world from a “global village” into a “borderless society”. The potential lies in the palms of the user, because the person can, within a single click, publish their thoughts and beliefs with anyone in the world at any time through social media. Don’t apprehend the network: the internet is transforming the method we interact for the better.

Social media is informative:

Social media benefits one to access the world of information in one click. One obtains access to plenty of data, be it science, technology, or as simple as booking tickets for a movie. E-commerce has allowed us to deliver everything anywhere easily. Hence, social media is the digital version of people. It benefits us to join, participate, and discover.

Social media helps in the improvement of entrepreneurs and brands:

The convenience of using social media in marketing is raising brand awareness. Social media can helps a business to grow its brand recognition by improving intercommunications with a business brand. Brand awareness means the total percentage of target people who know the company exists and what the company offers of products or services. When the brand awareness is developed, the probability of purchasing is improved. Thus, attempts should be made to make the brand a part of the mindfulness of consumers.

Social media causes addiction:

Social media is as bad as alcohol and drugs for millennials. The word “addiction” brings to mind alcohol and drugs. Yet, over the past 20 years, a different type of obsession has developed: addiction to social media. It has the potential to provoke long-term destruction to our emotions, habits, and relationships.

Social media decreases face to face conversation:

Social media has caused people to lose the skill to communicate efficiently. Social media has led us to have fewer interactions with the people that they connect with. The majority of people have access to social media at any time they want via their smartphones, so this only worsens as larger people begin to obtain smartphones. Since it has become more common, social media has made people have a trend to want to communicate with people online rather than in person because it has made the means easier.

Social media spreads a lot of trick messages and rumors:

Rumors and fabrications have been there since the start of time but on social media, it just gets more dangerous because it reaches across millions of people. Rumors begin as one small action and before we understand it has become another huge issue. Rumors have done a lot of harm and always continue to create anxiety and suffering amongst people. Beware, don’t be an associate to promoting rumors.

Life with or without Social media

There was a time when word social media wasn’t introduced. Earlier, there was plenty of time when people gather and gossip with each other, telling stories, myths and realities. Most interesting narratives were granny’s fables. People used to write letters for their loved ones and take around a week to reach. Then after some evolution radio came up. Listening to national or international news became very important and after some time print media came, then reading newspapers became an important part of life. Then, with incredible innovation of the human mind television came. Developing cities and growing villages are starting to influence television. First black and white came then colored boxes capture the prime location of every household. Whole families started watching television together which shows channels like DD national and other private channels. Other print mediums like weekly newspapers, magazines started appearing on a large scale. Then time changed and the process of communication came with word social media. It becomes a source for everyone to be updated about everything happening around the globe. Now, communication can be done so far in the world and in India. Social networking becomes a popular source of communication and entertainment as well. Some social networking sites like facebook, instagram, whatsapp, twitter, Skype etc.If we talk about the benefits and disadvantages of these then there are many such perks.

It has narrowed the distance between individuals. A man sitting in New York can chat anytime instantly. While in the past, it took days to send a photograph through courier. Now, one doesn’t need to wait to be updated about the latest news. One can easily get through social media easily. From watching movies to listening to songs, knowledge, latest updates everything is available on these social media platforms.

But it is not that social media don’t have demerits. In fact they have plenty of them. We even forget the phone numbers of our dear ones because of these smart social networking sites. We can connect through messaging or video conferencing. Right from morning to night people found themselves indulge into their smartphones they can’t even sit together for while without having their phones.

Our lives have been trapped in the net of networks. Now even we do not have time for yourself to sit with a free mind and relax for a while. A village dweller living in a remote location doesn’t even know about his personal data, his identity, his dislikes and we are living in a developed region storing all this information in the form of data on social networking sites.

Not even this, using phones all time leads to headaches in our youth. This generation is so advanced that they don’t know about customs, traditions. They only know how to socialize their world and to be trendy in their circle.

At its best, social media offers opportunities to reach a wide range to people with good connectivity and its worst, social media offers everyone an unprecedented opportunity to share without reflection.

Is Social media becoming curse?

Social networking was often used as a symbol of modern growth every now and then. It has come in an attempt to enable our country and our people to rise to great heights..However we humans still fail to understand the effective use of these social media platforms.Where the very technology is meant to connect us , divides us.It’s going down from becoming a social media benevolence to being a bane. And it’s just because of us humans who lead to destroying this tremendous usage of technology by being the devil and bringing birth to a future of darkness.

Lets take example of trending social apps such as Facebook , whatsapp ,  Instagram, twitter etcWhen anyone isn’t identified in either of these sociable sites, much of our human mindset will be to condemn them because they’re not in the social networking realm, and it’s the degree of which we’re now fascinated with it because it’s now too evident to us, even though their pitfalls are often overlooked..These social media sites have over one billion active users per day, filled with millions of post-uploads and stories per hour.Although others are attempting to build artificial intelligence by granting machines the ability to think like humans, here humans themselves are being regulated like machines by impulses to lose interest and caring for the same.

I said earlier that these sites are becoming bane by contributing to make us lazier. So much lazier that now we’re not even trying to remember anyone’s birthdays or many important dates because we’re indirectly getting to know about it from these sites..So that’s what weakens our bonds with others. people don’t even think any social gatherings, they just end such interactions on Facebook, video chat or voice calls, etc., so they’re totally losing the human touch in shared culture..Infact now in visiting some tourist or religious sites have often lost natural harmony and moment of joy and during that period people are so inshowoff these sites in social places that they are still not involved in learning the real past, tradition and speciality of such locations..We have ignored the true value of sharing time with loved ones. This causes us interact with others miles away and forget the person right next to us. Not creating positive interactions.t just making people so addictive just to keep connection with those who doesnt even matter or stay for us for too long.People have been such a seeker of popularity that they can do anything just to receive people’s views, followers and tweets. This triggered a increase in depression by endless similarities that we create in our minds regarding our lives, about the lives of others depending on what they share on their social media. Of course people only post the positive aspects, and perfectly posed/calculated shots, so things appear to be perfect.

People whose business actually runs through social media are being used wisely, while young people whose age is to build a career and learn life lessons are being seen wasting a lot of time on social media.

Humans should know how to allow good and successful usage of these networking media, such as connecting with those people who genuinely lead to creating jobs in our life through being motivation rather than toxic. Simply by being concentrated, diligent, self-conscious and never forgetting to calculate the influence on society rather than just popularity.

Social media: a bane or boon

You won’t realise it today, you will notice the outcomes of your actions overtime and only then when you’ll notice your actions keenly. Now, while reading this blog post a question would definitely arise in your mind and that is, what can you do to prevent your life from getting controlled by the social media, the answer is very simple it’s impossible to change your life overnight, but the continuous efforts you put overtime can help you to change your life for better, now you have to make a proper schedule and would have to set a goal for yourself that will keep you motivated, just uninstall the unnecessary applications and data from your mobile phone, and start working on the path of your dreams right away.

Cyber Crime: How to tackle it?

INTRODUCTION

The past two decades have witnessed an invasion of technology in almost all the spheres of human life. This has led to an increased dependency on technology. Thanks to information technology, the world has made paradigm shifts from the offline to online domain. Everything, from banking, stock exchange, healthcare, education can be controlled and monitored using technology. But as there are two sides of a coin, technology has also two sides of it i.e. pros and cons. One of the major cons of technology is cyber Crime.

What is cyber Crime?

Cyber Crime is a crime in which the computer is the object of the crime such as hacking, phishing and spamming or is used as a tool to commit an offence such as child pornography, hate crime etc. Cyber criminals may use technology to access personal information, business trade secrets or use the internet for malicious activities such as online monitoring of another person’s activities, unauthorized users who can access their personal and sensitive information.

A person who gains unauthorized access to the system is known as a hacker. Theft involves the download of copyrighted material by violating the copyrights. In the case of electronic funds transfer crime , a person illegally gains access to another person’s bank details and this may lead to financial losses. E- mail bombing involves sending a large number of mails over the network in order to crash th server. A very common cyber Crime act is sending the virus as an attachment via mails. This virus can be used to extract the data from the system and jeopardize it in some cases.

Victims of cyber Crime

National and international financial institutions , banks and security agencies fall victim to the cyber criminals. In many cases, they have to pay a lot of money to the criminals in order to prevent the misuse of their data .The social media is driving the world crazy. But,at the same time,it has become a breeding ground and platform for cyber Crime. Thanks to the sharing culture of social media ,people tend to share a lot over the social media platforms. This information is used by cyber criminals personal and sensitive information of other which can be late later misused on. The impostors create fake social media platforms and post misleading information about the concerned person. This commonly happens with public figures and is an intention to malign and harm the image of the person.

Necessary steps to secure one’s own account

  • People need to be very careful about their acquaintances and the degree to which they divulge in their personal information on social media. It is best to stay away and not accept invites,as well as requests from unknown people.
  • One should avoid sharing personal information such as passwords with anyone. The password needs to be strong enough so that the hacker cannot crack them. In order to increase the strength of password, one can make use of alpha- numeric values and special symbols. In fact, one needs to make sure that there is never a common password for all accounts.
  • It is best to refrain from clicking on the pop ups and unknown website links. One needs to make sure that all the transaction that happen online needs to take place through a secured gateway. One must abstain from saving the bank account details on the websites. The mails which make claims about winning a prize money are malicious and must be ignored. A good – quality antivirus software must be installed on the device.
  • E- mail service provides as well as many other online platforms ,have started multi- step verification process in order to secure the user’s account.

Law against this crime is not strong enough

The biggest concern with regards to cyber Crime is that it gets tough to uncover the identitybof the criminal. A skill law enforcing agency is required to deal with this crime. The Information Technology Act,2000 passed by Indian government deals with the domain of cyber crime. But this act has certain loopholes that need to be plugged in order to strengthen the cyber security. Besides,it is important for the government to create awareness among the people about the exponentially rising cyber crime and ways to deal with it.

“Social Media And Us”

Social media has become an eternal part of our life and has made humans addicted to them. People follow these for the source of information, entertainment, sharing their reviews and views and spend most of their time on these. This has made everything more transparent than it used to be, thus has given the power to the common man. It not only helps to provide justice to a person, but also spread awareness about wrong being done to someone. It had brought people to stand for their rights and demand what they truly deserve.

Social media has been able to bring vast change in the life of common people, as they can:

  1.  Make friends all over the world ,they can get instant information about the person or star they are a fan of and can follow him/ her more closely
  2. Moreover, people can share their moments with others and thus can make them a part of it virtually.
  3. People have found better sources of entertainment and fun, sending memes to their closed one and thus spreading happiness.
  4.  People can spread their business and campaign about totally free as a part of social media and digital marketing. They can post out their content which can prove to be fascinating  and people might join them in their work.
  5.  Awareness about global issues can easily be spread and people around the World can be a part of this noble cause.
  6. Moreover, people can display their hidden talent which they usually are not able to do due to lack of opportunity. It thus can be called a stage for numerous activities, bringing joy to life of people and providing them a better opportunity to showcase their true identity.

But this social media has brought people close around the world but have made distance in our close relationship. People hardly talk to their close ones like their parents, friends and society members, and search for new friends online. People spread rumours about other, which could be harmful for the image of the person in the society. It also has affected the lives of people as nothing has been left private. Social media has thus created barriers and have enabled us to live in a virtual world. Students and children hardly play games and rather believe in chatting with other people, playing games on their  mobile phones and scrolling by these social media handles all day long. This has a harsh effect on their eyesight and also their behavior attributes.

People should understand the importance and true function of these social media and internet. It should be utilised for the betterment of humanity . Social media is a good source of entertainment and knowledge sometimes, but one must not forget the right way to live life. Searching for new friends on social media and not even having vocal contact with your close one makes relationships to handle hard. One should spend time on these accounts but also live life and enjoy other things which brings out an all round personality of a person.

“Thus social media is a good source for business, entertainment, knowledge but what really matters is to understand the difference between the virtuality and reality, difference between right and wrong facts , difference between truth and fiction and the difference between living and enjoying life.”

Impact of social media on youth…

Social media became the part of life of today’s youth. They spend long hours on mobile and laptop using facebook, instagram, twitter, whatsapp or snapchat. Using these apps became the habit of youths in such a way that, they can even get off from it while they are in class or playing or sitting in a gathering.

The use of social media has both positive and negative impacts. The positive impact is that, social media keeps them updated about what’s happening around the world. Through these they can connect to their friends who is living miles away from them, which help them to keep the relations stronger.

A major advantage is that social media sites we can create pages and groups according to their profession which helps to build more connections and more opportunities being opened in the respective fields which can even lead to more employment opportunities.

Even though social media has many advantages, it has many disadvantages too. Using social media for too long, reduce the number of face to face interactions. As they use social media for long time, they don’t get time to sit with their family and go out with friends. According to studies, this leads to social isolation causes depression, anxiety, and many other problems. Social media also effects student’s language as they always use short forms or abbreviations on social media platforms which leads to a negative impact on their language capabilities.

Spending long hours on chatting on social media sites also decrease the productivity of youth which carries the youth not to be self dependent so they depend on parents and families. The long wasted time on social media can be used to do something productive by earning money or by learning something on online platform. Social platform also encourage spread of wrong information about religious and political groups or on people’s name which leads to fight and envy between the concerned parties.

So social networking have both positive and negative effects on youths. So it is necessary to use social media in a moderate way. Parents should guide and advice their children about to use social media sites effectively and warn them about the negative effects and cannot be overused. Proper usage of social media should also be included in the education curriculum so that they can use it effectively and doesn’t fall into the trap of negative impacts.

Mis/Using Social Media during the Outbreak Times

What are we going through the most after the coronavirus attacked the world? The simple answer is social media. The use of social media has increased a lot to cut off boredom. But the real question whether the purpose of its use is good/bad or ethical/unethical. Many issues are going viral in social media platforms. The issues usually range from memes and fun challenges to fake news and troll. We all are both the victims and the abusers in different situations. People share stuffs intentionally and unintentionally to praise and hurt someone. Sometimes people do not apply any common sense before posting any news or post or comment. It is totally up to us how the situation will be managed. Let us see what all kind of issues became viral in social media platforms during the lockdown.

Recently the news to become viral is concerns about the ‘phishing attack alert’. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team has issued a serious alert that the phishing attack campaign is expected to be carried out by cyber criminals through a suspicious email id— ncov2019@gov.in from 21 June, 2020. The cyber criminals claim to have over two million individuals’ mail ids. They have a plan of sending mails with the subject ‘Free COVID-19 Testing’ in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad. The Government sends an alert that the attackers will imitate government organisations to confuse and that they can also steal sensitive personal data. It has also formed some guidelines to restrict the attackers.

Another hot topic is the attacks on celebrities, including the ‘star-kids’, after the sudden demise of the Bollywood heartthrob, Sushant Singh Rajput. Initially the Maharashtra Police department had reported that he had committed suicide due to depression. But after a day it has filed a case and started investigating the suicide theory. While the investigation is on people have started acting like investigators themselves and are pointing out various issues and events to prove that it was not suicide. So many information are getting viral in Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Twitter. Netizens are attacking celebrities like Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Sonam Kapoor, Salman Khan and many more on the ground of ‘nepotism’ in this Bollywood industry. Netizens are also unfollowing them on Twitter and Instagram and posting numerous hate comments on their accounts. Some celebrities have blocked the comment sections of their accounts and some have deleted their accounts to have mental peace. Some people are calling for boycotting the large production houses and swear that they would not watch the movies of these houses in theatres. The followers of Sushant’s account have increased phenomenally in these few days on his Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Things have come to such a pass that the Maharashtra police has been forced to alert netizens with a warning. After the death of the Bollywood actor suddenly two pictures of his dead body lying on his bed became viral. It is unethical to post and share such pictures on both digital and print media. It may invite punishment for posting pictures of a body without the blurred face as per Indian law book. But some people have become insensitive due to the overuse of social media. Sushant’s close friends and some celebrities had to urge their followers not to share such pictures. It was getting out of control. So the police department posted on its social media account a warning that whoever shares the pictures will face severe consequence. One popular news channel also faced a FIR for reporting insensitive headline about Sushant.

Fake news poses a grave challenge to procuring and presenting information. Even the most prominent organizations fall prey to it. Some time back the World Health Organization (WHO) had to post an emergency notice on its official website. It clarified that a fake news was being circulated on various social media. The fake news stated that WHO has released a four-step protocol and procedure for conducting lockdown in India. WHO denied issuing such advisory and has asked people to visit the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India and the official WHO website for verified information.

Last but definitely not the least the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India, informed that the viral news on social media about the central government’s decision to resume lockdown from 18 June is fake. After the news went viral speculations and some panic started. Prior to this news, the PIB also refuted another fake news about the imposition of lockdown from 15 June by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Social media platforms have much utility in our life. But at times they become quite dangerous for public. Fake news and fake posters can lead some people to take wrong decisions. Some official measures are being taken now. The Indian Government, for instance, has stipulated that in the case of forwarding a particular message WhatsApp authorities have to show the exact number of people forwarding it. We have our responsibility as well. Before forwarding or sharing any piece of information, news or pictures as users we must try to check whether it is true or fake. It is a difficult task indeed but the effort needs to be there.

Virtual Trending: Coping with Real Life Boredom and Insecurity

Coronavirus has made life very tough for us in real life. People from different fields are facing challenges in their own ways. Doctors and frontline health workers are facing the challenges head on to save the infected since day 1. There is no proper vaccine for cure. Police departments are fighting to keep public inside their houses and to make them wear masks. Workers are losing jobs and businessmen are facing losses. Migrant workers faced challenges while going back to their villages. Sellers in various markets have incurred huge loss due to lockdown for around three months. Students are yet to know when examinations and admissions will be held. The lockdown has also affected mental health of people for suddenly arrived stress in life. But the scenario is totally opposite in various social media platforms. The virtual world challenges are quite different from the real world.

People around the world have taken to social media to get over insecurity that comes with staying home for prolonged hours. It is known as the FOMO syndrome (Fear Of Missing Out). The insecurity arises out of a fear that I am being left out while others are coping with the challenges facing us. People have started showing off their artistic skills in varying domains like cooking, drawing, singing dancing, reciting. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter are being used for the performance. There are whole lot of creativity and innovations in social media as people do not have jam-packed schedule thanks to the pandemic. Celebrities have also joined the group to have fun with their fans. Some such virtual challenges are:

  • #DalgonaCoffee: It was the number one viral challenge in Facebook and WhatsApp in 2020.  It seems everyone loves coffee and knows how to make it. It is a traditional way of preparation by beating the milk and coffee together for a few minutes and put it as cream on milk. But suddenly it became viral among people. Everybody participated and uploaded their ‘masterchef’-style videos and pictures to prove how good they were.
  • #UntilTomorrowChallenge: This was started in Instagram. People started posting their weird, funny or embarrassing pictures with this hashtag and nominated their pals. The picture were to be in their accounts for twenty four hours. In posting such pictures and sharing those around people would overcome the anxiety of being left behind.
  • #SareeChallenge & #DhotiChallenge: Girls in Facebook started putting their pictures wearing saree. After this went viral boys would also start sharing pictures in dhotis. One person has to upload his/her best picture and ‘nominate’ friends to do the same. Everyone’s account would be full of people in saree and dhoti. This challenge went on for a while.
  • #BingoChallenge / #ThisorThatChallenge/ #BucketlistChallenge: These three types of challenges became most viral in Instagram. Students and those working in offices made their personalized bingo challenge depicting the quality time spent in educational institutes and workplaces. People would have to tick activities done in a specified place or time. It is like a questionnaire template and answers must be given with stickers or check marks.
  • #GibberishChallenge: It is still now trending in Instagram among youth, celebrities and stand-up comedians with their personalized touch. This is a game where some gibberish words will be there and one has to mention the correct sentence or word or phrase. It is funny and interesting to play. It checks one’s mind and knowledge in an interactive way.
  • #PassTheBrushChallenge: This was again most common and viral challenge among girls in Facebook and Instagram. Here a person starts with a natural look without any makeup on and then she reveals a glamourous look after briefly covering the camera screen with a makeup brush. She has to pass the brush to the next participant in the challenge. They also made their own personalized themes like Bollywood style, Celebrations style, Comics style and many more. Artists also started this challenge while showing off their artistic skills in painting and drawing while passing the paint brush. Some of them passed food and snacks while feeding stray animals on roads.

One finds that TikTok has been the source of the highest number of fun challenges for people during the lockdown. Even with the Unlockdown 1.0 people are still participating in new challenges. The challenges have covered the world after becoming viral. They helped lot of people to remain active and escape boredom and insecurity to a certain extent. The challenges reveal that when physical mobility is restricted we can remain mentally alert by taking the virtual route.
