Must-Read Books for Young Adults

Books have played an important role in shaping personalities since the fifteenth-century Print Revolution. It could be argued that they were a cultural force even before the printing press was invented, as manuscripts were popular among the nobility across kingdoms and empires. As rapid technological changes took place in the are of mass communication, books became popular among young adults. Even today, books about the unique struggles and aspirations of the youth are received with warmth by the general public. Non-fiction masterpieces by the likes of Plato and Aristotle to Maya Angelou and Yuval Noah Harari are considered essential for a child’s transition to adulthood. In no particular order, I present to you my list of books that are essential for a young adult, keeping in mind their readability and relevance to today’s world.

– I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou (1969)

The Nobel Laureate and civil rights activist need no introduction. Her autobiography explores themes like racial prejudice, abandonment and rape candidly. Her writing underlined the prejudices of American society and their effects on young minds. The book speaks of the helplessness of the child who does not know of racism, who grows up believing in the lies of the society. It encapsulates the struggle that comes with living in a racist world and how different people deal with it. The book explores how a whitewashed neo-imperial narrative emasculates and humiliates coloured pride, and depicted the resistance raised by the people of colour. Her long journey from insecurity and shame to become a remarkable woman who inspired a generation of black women is inspiring to all, irrespective of their background.

-. A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking (1988)

Hailed as the greatest scientists of our time, Stephen Hawking beautifully explained some of the most complex concepts in Physics for the average person to understand. I consider his book to be a must-read, mainly because of its exhaustive and comprehensive nature. The book makes clever use of humour to put laymen at ease and this quality has led to its widespread popularity among the younger generations. If you’ve ever wondered how the universe came into existence and where will it be a billion years from now, you’ve chosen the right book to read.

-My Experiments with Truth, Mahatma Gandhi (1927)

The Mahatma is widely credited as the champion of the poor and the oppressed, and this book is a peek into his saintly life. In the book, he mentions the events that shaped his life and inspired him to devote all of his energy for the upliftment of the poor. Despite his larger-than-life stature, Gandhi was a common man with very grounded concerns and objectives, and the book is a testament to that. Satyagraha, or non-violent agitation, which has considerably influenced India’s mass movements is taken up by him as a topic. His methods of living a worthy life are simple and easy-to-adopt, which along with his clear narration, have contributed to the popularity of the book.

-The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini (2003)

The novel speaks of the heart-breaking struggles of people living in war-torn areas. It is a story of redemption as much as it is one of the unbreakable bonds. Set against the backdrop of the Afghan War, the story follows the journey of Amir from when he was a boy till when he became the man his Baba wanted him to be. It paints a painstakingly accurate picture of father-son relationships. The book won critical acclaim due to its coverage of real people that are caught in the political cross-fire. The warm and bustling Kabul we see in the beginning is lost in rubble by the end of the decade. The echoes of what could have been stayed with us for a long time after we finished the book, acquainting us with the reality on the other side of the world.

-To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee (1960)

A Pulitzer Prize winner, the novel became widely popular due to its depiction of racism and inequality from a child’s perspective. The story revolves around Scout, Jeremy and Atticus Finch, who live in the fictional Southern town of Maycomb. The book makes us question long-held beliefs and prejudices by looking at them through the innocent lens of a child. We mourn the injustice done to Tom Robinson which is compared to the senseless killing of songbirds. the narrative artfully questions the dehumanisation of the ‘others’ by a society who revels in the misfortune of others.

Change Your Habits, Change Your Life

We often complain about the current state of affairs while fantasizing about what could have been. In the end, our life becomes a giant culmination of things we could have done and the chances we missed. What we fail to realise is that if we never leap, the situation we are in would never change. We tend to look at events in isolation and miss out on the grand scheme of things. This tendency of ours prevents us from striving towards change, suspending us in the limbo of mediocrity. If we wish to turn our life over and start a new journey, we must begin by changing the individual habits that are keeping us firmly rooted in our discontented lives. Even if we are already happy with the way things are, there are always greener pastures we can move to by tweaking our habits a little.

Our attitude, which is a set of beliefs, inclinations or emotions, towards the happenings of our lives is a predominant determinant of our actions. To bring about change in our lives, we must believe that we are capable of it. Self-efficacy is a core competency without which a person can not sail through his or her life. Belief in ourselves is indispensable, and when we start losing it, we start losing the ability to steer our lives in the direction we want. Our upbringing greatly influences that way we see the problems in our lives. However, we should not think that the attitudes instilled in us in childhood are set in stone. We have control over our minds and bodies, and we mustn’t forget that. As long as we recognise and unlearn our problematic behaviour, we are on the path of progress.

We tend to complain about a lot of things in life. Before complaining, we should ask ourselves; Can we do something about it? If there is nothing that can be done, we can do nothing but pray to God, hoping that she hears our pleas. If we find that something can be done about the situation, we must get right to it without complaint, because it is our duty or dharma to do so. Once we take a proactive approach to the problems in our lives, we’ll find that there weren’t many, to begin with, and most could have been solved with a little effort on our part.

Meditating regularly, if only for ten minutes, also sets our mind at ease and makes it more receptive for positive changes in the future. This directly relates to self-efficacy, as only a strong and in-charge mind could attempt to bring about substantial change.

Focus on our mind and soul would be wasted if we do not keep our bodies healthy. Eating healthy and exercising regularly is extremely important. But, this fact of life is often ignored by those who are under a lot of stress. This starts a vicious downward spiral towards worse habits and eventually culminates in substance abuse and dependence. Our body is a temple, and we must treat it with the same respect we do to holy places. If it helps, we can view our body as God’s creation which is not to be tampered with. Healthy physicality produces excellent results over some time. Besides, exercising instils a sense of routine and structure that helps in planning our lives.

It is important to keep in mind that habits take time to form. We can’t expect an overnight transformation. If we are planning to make big changes in our lives, we should start small. Adopting little changes along the way to a better lifestyle is the most effective method to bring about a sustainable change. We need to prevent relapse into our old habits, and for that, a gradual but concrete movement towards better choices is universally preferred. Above everything, we must sail through the difficulties with a set purpose. If we have the end goal in sight, we could even overturn habits that are very hard to shake. So, we must find purpose and meaning in life before setting stride.

Topics that Schools Should Include

People’s eyes are often clouded with judgement. They perceive everything with the same mindset, often not taking consideration of the personal experiences of others. The variation in between people, be it twins or strangers from opposite parts of the world, is astounding. We fail to realise the differences among people. This diversity should be taught in school and colleges. The perception of the world and people should be an important part of the curriculum. Let’s talk about a few differences among people:

Patient and full of wisdom, some people are firm and capable of making good decisions for themselves. They are always aware of all the consequences, pros and cons of their actions and choices. At times, they may focus more on the negative part of a situation. They take into account their compatibility with someone according to their preferences and personality whenever they start a relationship. Their love life is often serious, they want to be committed to someone who is looking for a future with them. They also often forget to live in the moment by worrying unnecessarily about their future.

The nature of some people tends to be unpredictable. For them, meditation is helpful as it keeps them focused and prepared for any mood changes or major decisions that they may take. Some are also quite creative and intelligent whereas, in school, we often associate creativity with extrovert behaviour. Some others may be generous and good conversation makers. Including these differences in the curriculum of schools can help students in leading a better life. They should also be taught to prioritise themselves. One’s experiences and personality is one’s own, it is only in one’s power to change them and subsequently, their life. This teaches them to be independent and in charge of their life.

On the other hand, some people are highly emotional and sensitive. Sometimes, their emotions can be overwhelming and difficult to handle. Yoga, which should be mandatory in schools and colleges, can be like a pillow of comfort which provides them emotional support whenever they lay their head on it by supplying situation-specific solutions. Those who are wise know that they should live in the moment, thus, they never fail to find happiness in small things. Their most prominent qualities may be honesty, living a moment to its fullest, and expressing themselves correctly. As those who are wise speak their mind, the fire in them may come out in the form of an angry outburst. However, expressing anger and being ill-tempered are very different. Those who are ill-tempered, their hot-headedness makes them take decisions that are impulsive, and their ego prevents them from going back on what they have decided.

Knowledge about these personality variations will not only make students see others in a different light, but also make them more self-aware. They can accordingly work on themselves to be the best version they can be after knowing their flaws.

Along with people, their perception of who they find refreshing to be around, whose presence can make them forget about their worries and have a refreshing, peaceful moment in a life full of rush also varies.

From the vast pool of personal experience and exposure, we learn about our own selves. Educational institutions should include activities focused on self-discovery and self-awareness. They are as important as any other subject being taught.

Love

The emotion of love is a blessing to one and all. Everyone needs and wants to be loved in their life. It is said that love blossoms in your life when it is in your destiny. However, it is not always one’s partner who is the most loved, it depends upon their priorities and experiences. For some, their parents are the most important throughout their life, while for others, they may take a backseat when they get married. Love cannot be forced, it grows out of their personal experiences in life. As every personality variates, the definition of love and how they express it also changes. It is not just fellow humans whom we fall in love with, it could be animals, plants or any material. Love, as a feeling, should not be restricted. One should love whoever and whatever they want to love because nothing, not even monetary gains, can give us the joy and happiness this feeling can.

Here are some things that people love and prioritise-

For some, blood relationships are of the highest importance. They love their family more than anything in the world. It is their cousins who take part in their mischievous plans and subsequently form an unbreakable bond with them. They are their family as well as their friends and, thus, they are the closest to them. Impulsive, confident and generous, some people have an extremely special bond with their mothers. They may the rebellious child of their family and cause troubles to their moms but their love towards them is incomparable. They are often labelled as ‘mamma’s child’ because they prioritise their mothers above everything else.

Many people forget to live in the present and often replay their certain happy memories instead of creating more. They ones who are hung up on their past. They devote all their love to their ex-partner or someone they previously in their life who may have even done them wrong. They easily fall in love but it is hard for them to stop loving someone.

Friendship is valued by most and some may even give it the highest priority. Some people are extremely close to their friends. They are someone who is always ready to help others in difficult situations. Their creativity and practical knowledge are at work when they’re with their friends as they always look for new experiences. They are the ones who love their best friends more than anyone else in the world, either in a platonic or romantic way. They consider their best friends as their backbone.

Leaving the present and the past behind, some people tend to dwell in the future. Constantly planning about their future events, friendships, relationships et cetera they actually forget to admire what’s around them. They may love the image of their future partner the most. They are constantly searching for their perfect mate. In this process, they develop high expectations and a surreal standard for their future.

Many people are self-reliant and passionate and prioritise themselves over others. They endlessly work on themselves to become their best version. They are completely in love with their souls and never hesitate to show that. Self-love is a very important part of everyone.

It is said by many that pets are human’s best friends. For many, their pets are like their family. Their world would come to a halt if they are away from their pets for a long time. They shower their pets with all their love and provide the absolute best to them. They are the kind of people who feed their pet before they eat themselves.

Thus, love is an emotion which varies for everyone.

Working capital or Fixed capital. Which is more important?

Capital is the foundation base of any business. It is the assurance of the sustainability and stability of a Company .Capital is divided into two categories one is the Working capital and the other is the Fixed capital , now both of the capitals has their own significance in the functioning of a company, before we come to a conclusion and designate one of them as more important let us try to understand that what actually they mean and what is their role.

Working capital is the capital which is not permanent in the company. It’s regularly coming and going. Like the raw materials, the raw materials are brought in a factory production is done then the products are transported to wholesellers or warehouses and then again the new raw materials are brought in the industry. The raw materials are not permanent in the factory or industry that is why it is known as working capital. The petty cash is also comes under working capital first cash is used in paying bills buying commodities and then new cash comes in through sales.

Fixed capital is the capital which is permanent and remains in the factory or Industry or any business for a longer period of time. Like machines, vehicles Computers etc. They are bought either to boost production or sales and are used for much longer time in the company. They are the assets for a company and they also play a vital role in smooth functioning of business activities.

How Social media has changed our life’s

Social media has become part of our lives and at this point, we cannot even imagine the world without different social media channels. We are all aware of how important social media is for small, medium, and large businesses, thus here I will focus on individuals, and how social media affects our lives.

Like everything, social media has a good and bad side and hence, has a positive and negative effect on us.

Social Media can “Influence” as well as “Impact” a persons life in many ways. Those ways can be good and bad in comparison. There are people that do nothing but sit online all day every day and soak up what Social Media has to offer and do nothing productive with their lives, or beneficial for others. People take what they see on the platform as Truth without thinking for themselves, investigating the information or doing thorough research that necessitates whether that information is correct or not.

Social media can be a great place if you don‘t take it too seriously. Being always updated by your relatives, watching your friend tell funny stories and all that can be entertaining and I think only few people become addicted in these cases. At the same time, Social Media can be a platform for success! People network and solve issues through this medium. People provide answers, such as this platform. People can have thriving businesses via this method. People that have been lost, have been found as a source of using this tool. People keep in touch with friends and loved ones that they could not otherwise see from anywhere on the Globe as a result of Social Media. People share their most personal and private information which may account as a plus to some and a hindrance to others.

The place for social justice – bullying

It is easy to state your opinion on social media – everybody does that. It is even easier to do that if you are behind a nickname and there are a lot of people like that. With or without it, social media has become a place of social justice. One can get judged by the other social media users because of wrongdoing, the campaign is a very good example of it. Sometimes this kind of social media campaigns can be good and have a positive outcome, sometimes people who did nothing wrong might become victims

It has made communication more touchable

It might sound confusing, as social media is often blamed for damaging honest, natural communication. However, with the help of social media communication is so much easier. One can contact people or brands and businesses directly in a way that was impossible in the past. Messenger or DM takes us closer to every kind of person and we can vocalize our thinking very quickly and in a very easy way.

Mental health issues

It is one of the most negative and serious issues related to Social media. It is more common among young girls who often compare themselves to others. They often see rate themselves based on the number of followers and the number of likes on their pictures. Some of the surveys claim that most of the young people who do not receive “enough” likes on their pictures find their day ruined, and even delete these pictures. They measure their self-worse based on these metrics which negatively affects their mental health.

Sex education should be mandatory in high schools.

Sex is seen as taboo in most cultures and societies. Sex Education is seen by many people as something unnecessary and an uncomfortable thing to discuss as any discussion regarding. we can, should, and need to make sure that basic education is available to any person who asks. And we need to present enough to insure that they do actually ask, or can go read the rest for themselves. Mostly, this is about kids, but it can be anybody. Not all adults have this education themselves!

Sex Education isn’t just about telling kids about safe sex and preventing STDs, its also about informing students about the various physiological and the psychological changes that happen during Adolescence. In India, sex education is still a taboo. Forget sex education, the word sex is still a taboo among many Indian households. Although India has developed and modernized in a lot of ways, we still have to overcome many of our taboos and prejudices. Education is the primary tool to achieve that.

In India, in schools, we are taught about the anatomy of male and female reproductive organs and reproduction. STD are given a cursory glance, contraceptives are mentioned in a line and that is the extent of it. This is just a part of sex education. It doesn’t cover a lot of other topics. This is a major problem.

According to UNICEF, 47% of the girls are married before 18 years of age and 28.5% of women give birth to their first child before that age. (Mentioned in a United Nations Population Fund report). Almost none of them have any basic idea about sexual and reproductive health, birth control and healthy sexual habits. For years together the only aspect of sex education the government has been focused on is population control. This doesn’t even cover a minor part of sex education.

This mindset is changing slightly as result of private workshops being setup in many urban areas, but it is not enough.
If we want the present generation and the next generation to live a safe and secured life, there is a need for a comprehensive sex education at home and in school dealing with the psychological, physiological and social issues pertaining to sex and reproduction.

Don’t forget your roots, your Parents

When a child is born, the two happiest souls on the earth are the parents. It is a lovely creation of god and it is a part of their body. The child now grows up. Shouts in the afternoon, cries in the night and the parents, they are continuously engaged in handling the baby. After sometime child starts calling ‘mummy’ and ‘papa’, and listening this is a dream of every parent. Now as time passes by the kid starts going to school, then college, then the little child who is developed into an adult gets a job and finally gets married to someone.

But as it is general rule that time passes for everyone, for the child’s transformation into an adult and the younger parents getting older by each passing day. Initially it was the responsibility of the parents to take care of that innocent infant but in old age parents need attention from the children, they want someone to talk them, to listen them but unfortunately only few elderly people are lucky in true sense to have responsible children.

In India as people are following the west, the culture of living in a joint family is ending and now people want privacy. Privacy is so important for these grown up children that even their parents who made them enter the world become just a burden.

People in the name of being modern are leaving their parents all alone to agonize in their loneliness and old age. Human beings when become older certain physical and mental changes happen inside the body and let me tell you, which is all very natural. Everyone goes through the same phase and ha to go through the same phase. One can’t reverse the time; hence not even the ageing factor too. People send their parents to old age homes, so that their parents won’t disturb their private and married life.

Development is good, accepting the new trends and getting familiar with the current time is also good but leaving them all alone for agonizing with hunger and loneliness, who gave birth to you, taught you walking talking, eating and what not. In India many children leave their parents and get settled somewhere else and never comeback. Parents who were so happy that they’ve got such cute and lovely kid whom they’ll be making a good, responsible adult, are left with pain, sadness and tears.

There are many incidents to prove the same. Recently, one year back it was in news that an old woman jumped off from the terrace of her building. Everyone including his son and daughter in law were all, so sad. But after investigation and the CCTV footage it was revealed that the son himself dragged her mother upstairs and throws her away from the terrace as she was old and suffering from a disease. This is so painful to listen and read. The mother who carried him in her womb for 9 months facing all the pains and difficulties was killed by his son himself. Hearing and listening such incidents, shatter the heart.

The mind is compelled to think that how these so called civilized but uncultured and heartless children do such shameful acts against Humanity. Parents are the protective shield who prevent their children from landing into different types of problems.

The world will progress each day, each year, but an individual needs to stay grounded and humble towards his or her parents. Parents are the ones who spent their entire life in forming the future and the entire life of their children and this must not be forgotten. Parents and elderly are needed to be given proper respect and attention. The responsibility of taking care of their parents’ physical as well as mental health has to be taken by the children only.

Therefore it is time to meet and hug your parents and making themselves feel so good that yes, they are not alone. Their children are there beside them in this life of journey.

And each parent deserves all the happiness and respect from his children.

Social Media Marketing

The up and coming trend of social media market has swept the entire market industry. From small businesses to national hotel chains, every enterprise aims and sometimes struggles to make their space in the large social platform.

As the world undergoes rapid digitisation, social media becomes increasingly popular for professional and personal use. With half of the entire world’s population using Facebook, it has become a social media platform to popularise one’s business or to gain recognition.

Easy connectivity plays a major role in this. Globalisation in recent years has resulted in international connectivity via mail, flights, et cetera. The world is now said to be a village, with people on the opposite side of the world just one click away.

Apart from globalisation, the ongoing pandemic has also forced many businesses to switch from offline to online. People are using the internet more as there is no other option. After the novel COVID-19 outbreak, many businesses shut down, small businesses were started to meet the financial needs in these difficult times. Due to the lockdown, all jobs have been shifted to online work from home which leaves the companies with limited ways of advertising their products. To increase their reach, they use social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube et cetera to increase their buyers.

It is not just profit-minded enterprises that use social media marketing but we also see non-profit organisations (NGOs) attempting to gain recognition in order to popularise their cause and also to get funds to execute their plans. Social Media Marketing has become a major part of our world with online shopping applications projecting their ads as well as selling their products via these platforms.

The increasing demand for graphic designers, social media marketing specialists, content writers, et cetera is also a consequence of social media becoming a large part of the marketing industry. From school to college students, every student is trying to find internships to gain experience and mostly it is these areas, graphic designing and social media marketing, in which internships are being offered. Students want certificates, Letter of Recommendations and work experiences to fill up their resume.

Graphic Designing is now something everyone should know how to do. It is rapidly gaining importance. An increasing number of people sign up for graphic designing courses every day. Companies are working towards making inserting elements easier, providing more fluidity, a better experience for people using their graphic designing apps. Canva is an application which allows you to use pre-made templates, edit its elements, its colours, add various shapes, images, videos, animations, et cetera. Many other apps also provide the same but Canva is regarded as the most easy-to-use application.

With the new generation, everything is evolving. Unimaginable things are becoming a daily part of our life. The priorities of the companies and the industry as a whole are changing and only those will survive who will keep up with it. The rest will be left backwards if they do not push themselves to develop and adapt with the rest of the world.
