Why do we need taxes?

Taxes constitute a major source of revenue for modern governments. The total revenues of modern states besides tax revenues, non–tax revenues, customs and excise duties etc. also constitute parts of the revenue system. Tax revenues are important and useful as they do not create any liability to the state. Taxation is the only practical means of raising the revenue to finance government spending on the goods and services that most of us demand. Setting up an efficient and fair tax system is, however, far from simple, particularly for developing countries.

Purpose of Taxation: Taxation is an important part of the national economic development. It serves many purposes, which are as follows:

1. Pace of Economic Development: Tax policy can affect the pace of economic development and the way the rewards of that development are distributed.

2. Improvement of Different Sectors: Collection of revenue helps to improve the performance of different sectors of the country. It cannot perform its administrative and development activities without collection of revenue. It is the main objective of tax.

3. Redistribution of Income: It means the transfer of income from some individuals to others caused by progressive tax. Such redistribution from rich to poor reduces inequality. This can be accomplished by increasingly higher taxes, for example, estate and income tax.

4. Correction of Externalities: Taxes can correct externalities and other forms of market failure such as monopoly. The purpose of taxes is to enable the government to regulate social welfare activities and to create a market to induce such activities. Also, government spending by using collection of taxes by increasing productive capacity and thus overcoming market failure. For example, health care may lead to a more healthier and productive workforce.

5. Import Taxes: Import taxes may control imports and therefore help the country’s international balance of payments and protect industries from overseas competition. Indigenous industries may be awarded protection by way of taxation with the help of imposition of high custom duties on foreign goods.

Objectives and Principles of Tax:

1. Tax as a Percentage of GDP: The current economic turmoil and recession requires special measures from governments. Degrees of taxation must be clearly stated as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product. Substantial tax gains show that there is quite a lot of burden on individuals as well as business houses. There must be an appraisal done before a tax is levied to question the requirement for new regulations and to set up a precise and up-to-date estimate of costs.

2. Tax Simplification and Stability: Tax legislation and operation should be simple and straightforward to understand and comply with. To avoid too much time consumption in coping up with tax compliance, the volume of legislation must be kept to a minimum. Amendments in tax law, especially those that are opposite to earlier tax breaks or incentives that were the basis of business planning, must be reduced as much as possible.

3. Openness, Transparency and Accountability: Tax policies should be transparent and without bias, but for a part of a declared discriminatory policy such as one required for promoting new businesses. There is a wider political question about the extent to which it is appropriate to use taxation as an instrument of social policy, for example, penalising smoking by heavy duties or environmental taxes to mitigate climate change.

4. Certainty: This principle has been given by Adam Smith and explained earlier. The law should be framed in such a way that its interpretation must be the same whosoever analyses it. Authorities must be capable to amend and alter long established practices to which businesses are used to. Taxpayers must have certainty over Revenue authorities’ interrelations.

5. Tax Competitiveness: The globalisation of business implies that every nation must make sure that its tax rates are competitive and its administration user friendly. Tax is a significant issue and a deciding factor in setting up a business.

6. The tax base of a nation is more important than its rate. For instance, the headline corporate tax.

7. Efficiency: Efficient tax systems need to be developed so that the amounts due to the government can be collected without any delay, avoidance or evasion. Such efficiency would prevent the build-up of a black economy on one hand, and help the taxpayers in tax payment procedure on the other.

Hence, a tax system that is rational, equitable and simple needs to be created. To promote growth, a stable revenue stream is needed so that inequalities are reduced and economic sustainability is achieved.

Child Abuse in India

Abusing a toddler is like insulting the God you preach . Children are featured as soft hearted and are free from all their works and enjoying as the way they are. They are kind hearted and adorable. They shower love towards whom they love more.
But there are some culprits who are abusing this adorable children without any courtesy or any humanity towards them.

What is child abusing?

Child abusing is not just a violence directed to them. It includes both physical and verbal abuse. It is a type of maltreatment by the adults, which many be violent or threatening the child and troubling their emotions. It is also called as maltreatment. There are several types of child abuse which includes physical, emotional or psychological, physical neglect , psychological neglect or emotional neglect , sexual abuse and so on .

Causes of child abuse

There are several causes of child abusing and the prime mover is poverty. It happens when the family doesn’t have the resources to supply or to satisfy the necessity of their relations especially children like food, proper dress, education.

Many people who cannot satisfy the needs of their children are leaving their children at orphanage or selling them to the rich people who are ready to accept them for many purposes. As we all know that family is the best place for children and it is the place for crucial sour of affection and care .

Now-a-days maltreatment are occurring within the family and it is not exposed to the society.

Substance abuse is becoming one among the reasons for increasing number of child abuse round the world. Throughout different studies it had been clear that oldsters with history of drug abuse , most ordinarily alcohol, cocaine, and heroin, were more likely to abuse their children.

This substance can results in developing abnormal behaviors by the abuser either they are from family or strangers. The last explanation for maltreatment are often psychological. Parents who don’t have community of close friends or relatives living nearby may feel isolated. Parents with psychological disorders may affect their children without knowing.

How to prevent children from child abusing?

• Parents taking note of their children and talk with them.

• Educating new parents on the parenting skills since Children got to know that they’re special, loved and capable of following their dreams.

• Stopping maltreatment when seeing it.

• Teaching the kid the difference between acceptable and unacceptable touching, and to trust their instincts about people.

• Educating the oldsters about the signs of abuse so it’ll be easy to detect it and making the laws more stronger.

Preventing maltreatment isn’t simply a matter of oldsters doing a far better job, but rather it’s about creating a context during which “doing better” is simpler . Enlightened public policy and therefore the replication of high-quality publicly supported interventions are only a part of what’s needed to successfully combat maltreatment . It remains important to remind the general public that maltreatment and neglect are serious threats to child’s health development which overt violence toward children and a persistent lack of attention to their care and supervision are unacceptable. Individuals have the power to simply accept personal responsibility for reducing acts of kid abuse and neglect by providing support to every other and protectively to all or any children within their family and their community.

As sociologist Robert Wuthnow has noted that every volunteer effort or act of compassion finds its justification not in offering solutions for society’s problems but in offering hope “both that the great society we envision is feasible which the very act of helping one another gives us strength and a standard destiny”.

Save child and save future generations

How To Move Offices

Group of young people moving in new office, holding boxes and stuff.

According to the article, what I have understood is that it is not an easy task to shift office or to relocate offices. It requires careful planning and execution. It also involves giving prior notice to each individual working in the organisation about the premise’s relocation.

One needs to prepare a proper checklist which suggests us certain deadlines and guidelines, it says about how the organisation is communicating about it’s shifting premises, a proper role and responsibility should be given to the staff working about the duties one has to fulfull while the shifting is in process and should tell them to prepare for any inconviniences caused. The owner or the leaser should also be informed of moving or shifting and the fact that they will move or shift, should inform the date and the new address the premise is shifting to.

While shifting, there can be recklessness which needs to be minimized as if the required number of days to shift or the deadline to shift the organisation is passed by, it proves an expensive affair and waste  the time of it’s employees working.  At the new premise, the minimum basic requirement should be fulfilled such as WIFI connection, electricity, table, chairs, desks, etc. inorder to ensure smooth work flow in the new premise. It shouldn’t become a hindrance for slow working environment. One useful way is to divide the company’s staff into half where the other half stays at the ol premise for careful and proper shifting of all the equipments which are valuable to the organisation.

In general, it takes about 10-12 months to properly move into new premises and start their normal operations. The most important thing to keep in mind is to ensure that right people are selected to finish the job at the earliest. All of these work requires time and being hasty does not work. It might prove ineffective if there appears issues in the new premises or if the new premise turns out to be small in size or scale of operations increases. Therefore, a careful and long term planning is very essential in terms of scale of operations, size of the employees increasing, new departments increasing, etc. These are just some of the thoughts. Certain effective things to keep in mind would be to start planning as early as possible, label all boxes and all equipments for proper identification, appoint any moving manager to ensure that he/she focusses on the shifting process more smoothly and effectively, also, ensuring everything stays fit at the new premise is very essential. As far as it is possible, move non-significant things later on, first focus on the most essential stuff to be moved or relocated. Most of the time is saved by differentiating the office equipments into categories.

To end, shifting premises require more amount of time and planning and a speedy setup is essential in-order to reduce non-operating days in the office. Do share your thoughts on the same. It will be really appreciated. Thank you.

Climate Change: Should I be worried?

Environmental issues became a huge national and global concern since the 1960s. The media has played a huge role in communicating the situation and through that we get to know about many issues which are taking place in today’s world. Climate change has been a very substantial security concern not because of its direct impact on floods and other natural disasters which can damage mankind and create havoc. The extreme effects of climate change are befalling on the small developing island states first. Small island countries in the pacific are always at the mercy of natural disasters such as tsunamis and cyclones. The effect of climate change on them is so grim that if ever a natural disaster struck them, the whole island could be washed out. The majority of the shares for the releasing of greenhouse gases belong to large countries such as China, the US, India, and Russia.

Environment refers to everything around us from the water bodies to the mountains. Today the most striking reason for the degradation and depletion of the environment is the deteriorating relationship between man and the environment. Everyone gives industrial expansion and technological development all the importance now and forgets that the
surroundings are actually what helps us survive. These actions which are being taken have been so extreme and fast that the rate of degradation has been super quick and widespread. Increasing industries and their expansion have led to the increase in the release of greenhouse gases such as CO 2 , NO x, SO x, CFC’s and other gases.

These usually are the main reasons for climate change. The gases released get trapped in the atmosphere which causes the warming of the planet also called global warming. Due to this phenomenon, there are observed changes in temperature in our globe. Climate change is observed drastically in places such as Greenland, Antarctica, Indonesia, and many more. In the polar zones, climate change has caused significant differences such as in the melting of ice caps and the thinning of the ice. It is our responsibility as responsible citizens of the world to save all our resources from depleting to make our future generations also be able to see the wonders of the world. Earth is our home and only together we can make it green again!

“China’s Coercive(15) Population(15)”- A Cause Of Concern For India (11,12)

(159)

China’s coercive population(15) ie, about having a third child as announced by the Chinese government has become a cause of concern in India. India is supposed to learn from China’s failed attempt to follow the two child system policy more deligently and should implement good strategies for their citizens to follow.

China has been having a population which is getting well old-aged and in many other fast developing countries one can find these problems arising. It is raising cause of concern for China. India, following the policy has ensured that it has the best family planning measures. By educating the citizens in India, especially the women, birth control rate has increased and also, there has been a reduction in the child-marriage cases.

  • (61,69)
  • India can learn from China’ mistakes and can prevent population explosion and successfully implementing strategies to stop immensive demographic problems of finding jobs and empower women to educate their girl child more in-order to prevent them from increasing population and also, to be independent and more controlled over themselves.
  • The fact that China has announced to have third girl child is something which India should not implement as demographically, India has more girls and boys who are of the working age group and it will stop them from earning more and to be on job, their responsibilities will be such that they will not be able to handle.
  • The fact shown ie, the share of population being increased from 8% to 19% in 2050, is, in itself, a great cause of concern and it will not add any output to the Indian economy as they will not work, and will not create good output and increase GDP of the country.
  • A revamped child policy planning measures should be given more importance and also, educated to all the couples as it will be helpful in preventing the population growth.
  • India should also educate and invest on youth for their education and career as this can also be a good attempt on making them understand about this crisis and they are the very future of our country and it is through them that change will be impacted in India.

So, considering these factual statements and implementing them should be the very first step the Chinese Government should follow, as this will provide a lot of control of the population in the long run. Various other ways in which India can learn from China for controlling their population are as follows,

(61)

  1. Religion does not matter, it is always the amount of education both men and women have which ultimately makes them decide about their life.
  2. In fast developing countries, one is not taking care of their age-old parents and they are forced to give birth to someone, who will take care of them. This should stop and be taken care of by our country and age-old parents should never be left in whichever state of their health they will be.

DENTAL CARE RITUALS

Now that we have known the major dental health problems we must also know that apart from brushing teeth twice daily, there are other rituals that need to be followed for a healthy oral space. Because many a time it happens that despite brushing teeth diligently, some food debris gets left behind which gives the bad bacterias a chance to harm our tooth.

All the times we remind ourselves that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. But, unfortunately, we forget that a healthy oral space leads to a healthy body.

Maintaining healthy and shining teeth is crucial because our mouth is the threshold of our body. Most of the things that enter our body comes through this space. So, looking after its health and hygiene is necessary.
Hence, I am illuminating you with some of the dental care regimes that you need to give attention to for clear, healthy teeth.

FLOSSING:

Flossing is a dominant method for protecting teeth from decaying.
Cut 18 inches of floss and wind it around the middle finger of each hand.
Insert the floss between your tooth and gently slide it up into the space between the gum and the tooth. It will slide down all the trapped debris down.
Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up-and-down motions.
Repeat this method on the rest of your teeth.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BRUSH:

Always look for a brush whose head and bristles are small enough to reach into the tiny spaces between your teeth. According to the International Dental Health Association, most adults require a small or medium-sized toothbrush for this purpose.

GARGLE WITH MOUTHWASH:

Add mouthwash to your dental care regime. A mouthwash goes to all those pockets of spaces where bristles and floss cannot reach. It helps in hunting down the plaque-causing bacteria and gives your mouth a fresh odor. All you need to do is to gurgle mouthwash 3- 4 times a day, after every meal.

CHANGE BRUSH FREQUENTLY:

Brushes tend to worsen after a while. Their bristles get disjoined, gets detached, or become blunt. These types of brushes don’t clean the teeth properly. So if you’re using the same toothbrush for a long time, you may not be getting the best clean anymore. Hence, change your brush within three to four months or when the bristles start to tear apart.

EAT HEALTHY:

The greatest and most important part of all the oral care regime is eating healthy. Consume calcium-rich food for strong teeth and gum. Drink plenty of water in a day. It helps wash away food particles and keeps your saliva levels high. Water also washes away the bad bacterias and gives you a fresh odor. Apart from milk, cheese, and yogurt, celery, carrots, and crunch veggies are other healthy foods for strong teeth.
Also, have a check your drinking habits and discard smoking cigarettes.

So, bring down all the habits into your dental care regime and you would be able to have a clean and healthy set of teeth.

DENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

In the past few decades, our lifestyle has witnessed a momentous change. This transformation has put a significant strain on our dental health.

Oral health is the most neglected area of our overall health. It is a common misconception that brushing twice a day would keep all dental problems at bay. That is why most people do not know about others ways of dental care.

Oral health directly affects our overall health and quality of life. Our mouth is the threshold of our inner body. Every germ or bacteria that enter our body comes through our oral space. Therefore, to keep our body as fit as a fiddle we must ensure that our oral health is at par.

Most people consider tooth decay to be the only dental problem. However, there exist several dental problems that people must know.
The other dental health problems include:

TOOTHACHE DUE TO CAVITIES-

Tooth decay primarily happens due to unhealthy eating habits. Cavities or tooth decay are the areas in the tooth that have been decayed and have formed holes in them.
It happens when food, acids, or bacteria form a coating on your teeth called plaque. These acids start to eat away the enamel and the underlying tissue. If neglected it can permanently damage your teeth.

TEETH STAINING-

It is the most common problem people suffer all over the world. It is also caused by unhealthy eating habits. Consumption of tobacco, alcohol, or even smoking can lead to discoloration of the teeth.

GINGIVITIS-

Gingivitis is referred to as the inflammation of the gums. It occurs through the formation of plaque on one’s teeth due to poor dental hygiene.
Symptoms of Gingivitisincludes swollen and reddened gums. It also causes bleeding from the gums while brushing or flossing. If the disease is left untreated it leads to periodontitis, a more serious gum disease.

CHIPPED TOOTH-

Most of us have the habit of tearing and breaking things from our teeth. This sometimes causes the shedding of a part of the tooth.
A chipped tooth is categorized under the number 1 type of tooth injury. It is mainly caused by biting hard substances, or conditions like bruxism. It might also be caused due to accidents.

MISALIGNED TEETH-

This problem is also very common among people. Misaligned or crooked teeth cause jaw pain. This misalignment can also lead the food debris to get stuck in between the teeth and cause a dental problem.

So these were some other dental problems that need serious attention and treatment.

WHAT IS CRYSTAL HEALING?

Crystal healing is a practice in which various types of crystals and gemstones are used to cure an ailment. They are used as a technique where the crystal allows the positive healing energy to flow into the body and lets the negative, disease-causing energy flow out. However, crystal healing practice is a pseudoscientific process and is not supported by any scientific theories.
However, the adherents of this therapy are of the view that this therapy can help transform the aura of the body along with boosting low energy, preventing the bad energy, and releasing the blocked energy thus, giving a sense of relaxation to mind and body and providing a sense of tranquility.

“For serenity, it is best to use a combination of crystals in your environment and carry crystals with you.”

Treatment of OCD

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 2 to 3 percent and is established to be 10th leading cause of disability in the world. Patients with OCD experience recurrent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive, stereotyped behaviors (compulsions) that last for at least one hour per day and significantly interfere with the individual’s normal level of functioning.

OCD was once thought to be extremely rare, but recent epidemiological studies have shown it to be the fourth most common psychiatric disorder.

OCD is often a chronic disorder that produces significant morbidity when not properly diagnosed and treated.

OCD can be treated. The treatment recommended will depend on how much it’s affecting your life.

These treatments can be very effective, but it’s important to be aware that it can take several months before you notice the benefit. A short course of therapy is usually recommended for relatively mild OCD. If you have severe OCD, you may need a longer course of therapy and/or medicine.

The most effective treatments for OCD are called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which has the strongest evidence supporting its use in the treatment of OCD, and/or a class of medications called serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SRIs.  During ERP, anxiety and obsession-inducing stimuli are systematically presented in a controlled environment and patients are prevented from engaging in their usual compulsions. Exposure and Response Prevention is typically done by a licensed mental health professional (such as a psychologist, social worker, or mental health counselor) in an outpatient setting. Taken together, ERP and medication are considered the “first-line” treatments for OCD. About 70% of people will benefit from ERP and/or medication for their OCD.

What if Outpatient ERP Hasn’t Worked? Are There More Intensive Options?

  • Traditional Outpatient – Patients see a therapist for individual sessions as often as recommended by their therapist generally one or two times a week for 45-50 minutes.
  • Intensive Outpatient – Patients may attend groups and one individual session per day several days per week.
  • Day Program – Patients attend treatment during the day (typically group and individual therapy) at a mental health treatment center usually from 9am – 5pm up to five days a week.
  • Partial Hospitalization – Same as the Day Program but patients attend the treatment at a mental health hospital.
  • Residential – Patients are treated while living voluntarily in an unlocked mental health treatment center or hospital.
  • Inpatient – This is the highest level of care for a mental health condition. Treatment is provided on a locked unit in a mental health hospital on a voluntary or sometimes involuntary basis. Patients are admitted into this level of care if they are unable to care for themselves or are a danger to themselves or others. The goals of inpatient treatment are to stabilize the patient, which generally takes several days to a week, and then transition the patient to a lower level of care.

Other recommendations from the APA Practice Guideline, cite research showing that ERP delivered in a group format, as well as ERP therapy delivered via videoconferencing (teletherapy), might be effective. Also, there is some promising new research showing that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy may be helpful for OCD.

OCD is a chronic and severe psychiatric disorder that is often incapacitating when left untreated. Patients suffering from OCD often attempt to hide their symptoms due to the embarrassing or disturbing content of their thoughts. Many individuals isolate themselves as a consequence of their symptoms and avoid their exposure to potentially anxiety-provoking situations. Unfortunately, there is often a long delay between the time when an individual develops OCD symptoms and when they first obtain treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment minimizes symptom severity and level of disability.

How to judge people

Yes you got it right. We are often told  don’t judge people on the basis of any parameter.

And yet here I am suggesting to judge not just people but situations efficiently.

What kind of judgment are we talking about here? You should learn to do selective judgment. Judgment Done by you should be on an individual level and it should not affect adversely the second party in anyway.Like I said there is good in the world along with the bad so your judgment should be limited to warding off the bad people around you.

Your call should not become any sort of discrimination towards the people.Your hatred or your indifference should not become social or societal indifference.

Judgement of a person is only for cautious purposes.

Like it benefits girls the most.Seeing the number of rapes and hate crimes committed against women,a key of caution towards judgement of intention can be handy.

Similarly, mothers and sisters of culprits can judge their son’s behavior as to what tendencies he has. This can help in avoiding at least a few incidents of female cruelty.

I agree,In india parenting is different. But that’s what we need to learn as a country.Adopt the positive things from other countries.

It can help you be safe.Prevent accident, incidence of injury to both mind and body.

Another angle to judgement is we learn to analyse situations and can foresee our reaction to it.We constantly react to external stimuli in many ways.

It helps provide a presumption of a situation and hence we can bravely fave the wicked ones.

The fight between right and wrong even establishes itself at government level.

Whilst arguing that selective judgement is good and can be helpful to you there is yet another angle. To learn where to not judge.

Some wrongs we can avoid-

To judge people on the basis of their beauty.Bad.

Judging them on the basis of their money. Bad.

Doing friendships or relationships on the basis of pros and cons or advantages and disadvantage without having any emotions. Bad.

Judging someone on the basis of the language they speak,Fluency in English. Bad.

Judging someone on the basis of clothes to wear. Bad.

Judging someone on the basis of their religion/Caste. Bad.

Judging someone by the life choices they make ie being on married choosing a spouse etc.Bad.

Considering Everyone who is not like you inferior and satisfying your pride.Bad.

&

Self analysis and helping others learn selective judgment to prevent or overcome possible future wrongs.Good.

Poor leadership

Poor leaders are characterized by their lack of ability to provide direction to the team, which may stem from their own lack of vision. Chron says not setting clear expectations keeps workers from understanding what they actually need to deliver. It can cause frustration on both ends when the deliverables are not completely in line with what the department needs.

As a leader, it is your responsibility to provide not just clear instructions to your team, but also to help them see how their tasks contribute towards achieving the company’s overall objectives. Keeping them informed of how their efforts impact the organization can motivate them to perform at their best while considering their own obligations.

Plus, you also get to see how your employees grow as the business moves forward. Constant growth of workers is more vital than simply completing tasks because at the end of the day, they are still the main driving force towards the company’s success. In other words, an employee who does what’s required is good; but one who exceeds expectations and develops into an invaluable company asset is the best.

Stop comparing yourself with others

Comparing ourselves with others does not do any good, rather it adds to our mental stress and anxiety. In the era of social media, everybody showcases themselves on some of the other platforms. Some of the people start feeling inadequate whether be it in looks or their career or any aspect of their life. This feeling of inadequacy might harm your mental health, and make you feel miserable.

Comparing yourself to others will not lead you to any greater heights, you must realize that everybody has their own pace of growth in life. Some people may succeed early and some later. So you should stop comparing yourself with others. It affects mental health to such an extent that you give up trying and start thinking that you are not enough. You may feel that you do not have the right body figure, or you might feel that you are not beautiful enough, or that you are not successful enough. But social media is just for showing off all the good things happening in others’ life and you must understand that the photos may be filtered.

You must work on yourself rather than comparing yourself with others. Sometimes the comparison can be healthy and it may lead you to improvement in yourself but many times it works the opposite way on our mind. When you check apps like Instagram and LinkedIn, all you see is people posting about their achievements and success and it makes you feel like you are doing something wrong in your life, questions like “Am I not doing enough? Am I not good enough”, pops up in your mind. You spend your energy comparing yourself with others without realizing that this time could be used up to improve yourself or work upon yourself if you want to succeed.

Remind yourself of the things that you are grateful for, be it your relationships with others or any of your hobbies or anything.

We start thinking that our worth is defined by the number of likes on our posts or the fake good comments by people. But nobody cares what you post on social media and neither should you care what others post. Just see it and feel that, okay, they are doing good in their life and there is no need to feel jealous, you are on your journey to success.

There will be many positive changes in your life when you stop comparing yourself with others. Your mind will be at peace, you will be able to concentrate on your growth much more, you will feel grateful for what you have, and you will at peace with your mind.

    ― Steve Maraboli
  2. “We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” – Dalai Lama

    how you teach others
    to love you”

On the pulse of morning by Maya Angelou

This poem was performed for the presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton in 1993 by Maya Angelou. Through this poem, Maya asks America to give away the hate against the Black Americans, stop the killings and genocides. This poem inspires people to become united and work for our planet and the people living on it.

“A Rock, A River, A Tree
Hosts to species long since departed,
Marked the mastodon,
The dinosaur, who left dried tokens
Of their sojourn here
On our planet floor,
Any broad alarm of their hastening doom
Is lost in the gloom of dust and ages.

But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,
Come, you may stand upon my
Back and face your distant destiny,
But seek no haven in my shadow.
I will give you no hiding place down here.

You, created only a little lower than
The angels, have crouched too long in
The bruising darkness
Have lain too long
Face down in ignorance.
Your mouths spilling words

Armed for slaughter.
The Rock cries out to us today, you may stand upon me,
But do not hide your face.

Across the wall of the world,
A River sings a beautiful song. It says,
Come, rest here by my side.

Each of you, a bordered country,
Delicate and strangely made proud,
Yet thrusting perpetually under siege.
Your armed struggles for profit
Have left collars of waste upon
My shore, currents of debris upon my breast.
Yet today I call you to my riverside,
If you will study war no more. Come,
Clad in peace, and I will sing the songs
The Creator gave to me when I and the
Tree and the rock were one.
Before cynicism was a bloody sear across your
Brow and when you yet knew you still
Knew nothing.
The River sang and sings on.

There is a true yearning to respond to
The singing River and the wise Rock.
So say the Asian, the Hispanic, the Jew
The African, the Native American, the Sioux,
The Catholic, the Muslim, the French, the Greek
The Irish, the Rabbi, the Priest, the Sheik,
The Gay, the Straight, the Preacher,
The privileged, the homeless, the Teacher.
They hear. They all hear
The speaking of the Tree.

They hear the first and last of every Tree
Speak to humankind today. Come to me, here beside the River.
Plant yourself beside the River.

Each of you, descendant of some passed
On traveller, has been paid for.
You, who gave me my first name, you,
Pawnee, Apache, Seneca, you
Cherokee Nation, who rested with me, then
Forced on bloody feet,
Left me to the employment of
Other seekers—desperate for gain,
Starving for gold.
You, the Turk, the Arab, the Swede, the German, the Eskimo, the Scot,
You the Ashanti, the Yoruba, the Kru, bought,
Sold, stolen, arriving on the nightmare
Praying for a dream.
Here, root yourselves beside me.
I am that Tree planted by the River,
Which will not be moved.
I, the Rock, I the River, I the Tree
I am yours—your passages have been paid.
Lift up your faces, you have a piercing need
For this bright morning dawning for you.
History, despite its wrenching pain
Cannot be unlived, but if faced
With courage, need not be lived again.

Lift up your eyes upon
This day breaking for you.
Give birth again
To the dream.

Women, children, men,
Take it into the palms of your hands,
Mold it into the shape of your most
Private need. Sculpt it into
The image of your most public self.
Lift up your hearts
Each new hour holds new chances
For a new beginning.
Do not be wedded forever
To fear, yoked eternally
To brutishness.

The horizon leans forward,
Offering you space to place new steps of change.
Here, on the pulse of this fine day
You may have the courage
To look up and out and upon me, the
Rock, the River, the Tree, your country.
No less to Midas than the mendicant.
No less to you now than the mastodon then.

Here, on the pulse of this new day
You may have the grace to look up and out
And into your sister’s eyes, and into
Your brother’s face, your country
And say simply
Very simply
With hope—
Good morning.”
