499 UDAN routes operationalized

The Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) – UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), a government-backed initiative to improve infrastructure and connectivity in India, especially in remote and underserved regions, completes six years. It is a vital component of India’s National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) 2016, launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) on October 21, 2016, with a 10-year vision.

The first RCS-UDAN flight was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on April 27, 2017, connecting Shimla to Delhi. The scheme focuses on improving unserved air routes in underserved regions of the country and fulfilling the aspirations of the common citizens.

So far, RCS-UDAN has facilitated travel of more than 130 lakh passengers, demonstrating its success in enhancing air travel accessibility.

Over the period of 6 years, various versions of UDAN Scheme were launched, as follows:

  • UDAN 1.0: 5 airlines companies were awarded 128 flight routes to 70 airports (including 36 newly made operational airports)
  • UDAN 2.0: 73 underserved and unserved airports were announced and for the first time, helipads were also connected.
  • UDAN 3.0: In coordination with the Ministry of Tourism, Tourism Routes were included. In addition to Seaplanes for connecting Water Aerodromes, several routes in the North-East Region came under the ambit of the scheme.
  • UDAN 4.0: Gave impetus to North-Eastern Regions, Hilly States, and Islands. The operation of helicopters and seaplanes incorporated.

UDAN Version 5 – 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2

Following the four successful rounds of bidding, the Ministry of Civil Aviation launched the 5th version of RCS-UDAN with numerous improvements based on stakeholder feedback.

UDAN 5.0 where the focus is on Category-2 (20-80 seats) and Category-3 (>80 seats) aircraft. Similarly, the cap of 600 km has been removed and there is no restriction on the distance between the origin and destination of the flight. This round prioritizes the routes that will connect the airports that are ready for operations or will be ready soon, which will lead to quicker operationalization of awarded routes. Consequently, Airlines would now be required to commence operations within 4 months of the award of the route, and they are welcoming this change as this helps them to better plan their operations. Additionally, if the average quarterly PLF of the route, for four continuous quarters, is higher than 85%, the exclusivity for that route would be withdrawn, allowing for other airlines to also provide connectivity on the route.

This was soon followed by UDAN 5.1, This round of RCS-UDAN is designed specifically for helicopter routes by increasing the scope of operations for helicopter operators, enhancing VGF and reducing Airfare Caps. The Scheme will now allow operations on routes provided that at least one origin or destination is in a priority area and at least one origin or destination is a heliport, thereby enhancing the potential range of connectivity. VGF caps have been enhanced to improve viability for operators and airfare caps have been reduced to make flying more affordable for passengers respectively.

Currently, bidding for UDAN 5.2 is underway to further enhance the connectivity to remote and regional areas of the country, achieve last-mile connectivity, and provide impetus to the tourism sector through small aircraft (<20 seats). The Scheme will provide greater operational flexibility to the small aircraft operators, by allowing them to operate a maximum of 40% of annually quoted RCS seats and a minimum of 10% of annually quoted RCS seats in any given quarter.

Fueling Growth in the Aviation Industry

RCS-UDAN is contributing to the growth of the civil aviation industry as four new & successful airlines have come up in the last 6 years. The scheme has helped airline operators to start up and develop a sustainable business model. Additionally, it’s providing opportunities to small regional airlines FlyBig, Star Air, and IndiaOne Air to scale up their businesses and their successful run is evidence of the fact that the scheme is creating an amiable ecosystem conducive to airline business.

Demand for new aircraft of all sizes

The scheme’s incremental expansion has generated an escalating demand for new aircraft, concurrently broadening the spectrum of aircraft deployed. This augmentation encompasses a comprehensive range of aircraft and encompasses helicopters, seaplanes, 3-seat propeller planes, and jet planes. Presently, a diversified fleet, including Airbus 320/321, Boeing 737, ATR 42 and 72, DHC Q400 and Twin Otter, Embraer 145 and 175, and Tecnam P2006T, is actively serving on the RCS routes. The heightened demand for aircraft is substantiated by Indian carriers’ orders, which exceed 1,000 aircraft slated for delivery over the next 10-15 years, representing a significant augmentation of India’s existing fleet, which currently comprises approximately 700 planes operated by various airlines.

Promoting tourism

RCS-UDAN is not solely dedicated to offering last-mile connectivity to tier-2 and tier-3 cities; it also stands as a prominent contributor to the burgeoning tourism sector. UDAN 3.0 introduced tourism routes connecting several destinations in the Northeast region, while UDAN 5.1 is dedicated to expanding helicopter services in hilly regions to stimulate tourism, hospitality, and local economic growth.

This initiative has successfully connected destinations such as Khajuraho, Deoghar, Amritsar, and Kishangarh (Ajmer), which have substantial relevance in religious tourism. The entire Northeast region’s tourism industry is experiencing a considerable upsurge due to the introduction of Pasighat, Ziro, Hollongi, and Tezu airports, fostering greater accessibility.

Boosting air connectivity

From Mundra (Gujarat) to Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh to Hubli in Karnataka, RCS-UDAN is connecting 30 States/ UTs across the length and breadth of the country. A total of 75 airports have been operationalized under UDAN. Eight airports have been operationalized in the Northeast region. Many airports that were operationalized under UDAN such as Darbhanga, Hubli, Kannur, Mysuru, etc. have become sustainable with many non-RCS commercial flights operating from these airports.

Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said that, “Completion of 6 successful years of UDAN is an incredible milestone for the aviation sector. This remarkable achievement is a testament to our commitment towards democratising the aviation sector and ensuring accessible air travel for all. Over the past six years, UDAN has unlocked the true potential of our country by promoting tourism, boosting trade, and empowering local economies. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the stakeholders, airlines, airport authorities, for their unwavering dedication in making UDAN a grand success. Their collective efforts have bolstered connectivity, improved infrastructure, created countless job opportunities, transformed lives and uplifted communities. I am certain that this scheme will lead to a more connected, prosperous, and inclusive India.

Counter-Strike: A First-Person Shooter Classic

Counter-Strike, often abbreviated as CS, is a renowned and influential first-person shooter (FPS) video game series that has left an indelible mark on the world of gaming. Developed by Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess Cliffe, the first version of the game was released as a mod for Half-Life in 1999. Since then, Counter-Strike has evolved into a highly competitive and widely beloved franchise, with several iterations and an active global player base.

Gameplay and Objectives

The core gameplay of Counter-Strike is built on the concept of counter-terrorism versus terrorism. Players are divided into two teams: the Counter-Terrorists (CTs) and the Terrorists (Ts). The main game modes include Bomb Defusal and Hostage Rescue.

In Bomb Defusal, the Terrorists must plant a bomb at a designated site, while the Counter-Terrorists aim to prevent the bomb from being planted or defuse it if it is. This mode requires strategic planning, teamwork, and precise gunplay.

In Hostage Rescue, the Terrorists are tasked with capturing and guarding hostages, while the Counter-Terrorists must rescue them. The game promotes cooperation, communication, and tactical thinking.

Global Success and Professional Esports

Counter-Strike quickly gained popularity and became a major title in the emerging esports scene. The competitive aspect of the game led to the establishment of numerous professional tournaments and leagues, including the iconic ESL One and the Valve-sponsored Major Championships.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), the latest installment of the series released in 2012, remains one of the most popular esports titles. With millions of players, CS:GO features a sophisticated matchmaking system and a bustling market for weapon skins, adding depth to its competitive environment.

Professional players and teams from all over the world compete for substantial prize money, and CS:GO tournaments draw millions of viewers. The game’s competitive nature has led to the formation of dedicated esports organizations and the rise of famous players.

Maps and Strategies

Maps play a pivotal role in Counter-Strike. Iconic locations like Dust II, Mirage, and Nuke have become legendary battlegrounds. Each map presents unique challenges and opportunities, emphasizing different aspects of gameplay, such as long-range sniping, close-quarters combat, or tactical maneuvering.

Players develop strategies that involve map control, economy management (buying weapons and equipment), and coordinated team tactics. Communication is essential for planning attacks, holding positions, and adapting to the ever-evolving game dynamics.

Community and Customization

Counter-Strike has a passionate and dedicated player community. Gamers create custom maps, game modes, and mods, adding to the game’s longevity and diversity. The Steam Workshop provides a platform for players to share and access user-generated content.

In addition, the introduction of weapon skins in CS:GO allowed players to personalize their weapons and trade them in a virtual market, fostering a sense of ownership and investment in the game.

Conclusion

Counter-Strike stands as a hallmark in the world of first-person shooters. Its addictive gameplay, competitive spirit, and dedication to tactical team-based combat have led to its enduring popularity. As one of the pioneers of the esports movement, Counter-Strike continues to attract a dedicated player base, both casual and professional, making it an enduring classic in the gaming industry. With the potential for new iterations and updates, the legacy of Counter-Strike is far from over, promising to captivate the hearts and minds of gamers for years to come.

Sweets: A Delightful Journey into Culinary Bliss

Sweets, also known as desserts or confections, hold a special place in culinary traditions worldwide. From a simple piece of chocolate to elaborate multi-layered cakes, sweets come in a dazzling array of flavors, textures, and forms, making them a universally beloved treat. The history of sweets is as diverse as the sweets themselves, often rooted in cultural and regional traditions, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of generations of confectioners.

A History of Sweetness

The love for sweets is not a recent phenomenon. Sweets have been an integral part of human culinary history for centuries. Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans were known to indulge in various forms of sweet treats made from ingredients like honey, dates, and nuts. These early desserts laid the foundation for the diverse range of sweets we enjoy today.

In the Indian subcontinent, sweets have an incredibly rich history, with a plethora of traditional sweets known as “mithai.” Sweets like Gulab Jamun, Jalebi, and Rasgulla have been enjoyed for generations and are an essential part of festivals, celebrations, and daily life.

Types of Sweets

The variety of sweets available around the world is astounding, but they can be broadly categorized into several types:

  1. Chocolate: Chocolate, made from cocoa beans, has a universal appeal. Whether in the form of creamy bars, truffles, or hot cocoa, chocolate satisfies cravings for both sweetness and a hint of bitterness.
  2. Baked Sweets: This category includes cakes, pastries, pies, and cookies. The world of baking offers an endless array of textures and flavors, from the buttery layers of a croissant to the fluffy tenderness of a sponge cake.
  3. Candies: Candies encompass everything from hard, fruit-flavored sweets to chewy caramels and gummies. They often come in a dazzling array of colors and shapes.
  4. Fruit-Based Sweets: Many sweets are made from fruits, either dried or fresh. Think of fruit jams, fruit preserves, or candied fruit peels.
  5. Ice Cream and Frozen Desserts: Cold, creamy, and available in countless flavors, ice cream is a go-to sweet treat. Frozen desserts also include sorbets, gelato, and frozen yogurt.
  6. Traditional Sweets: Every culture has its traditional sweets that are deeply rooted in their history and traditions. These sweets can be made from a wide variety of ingredients, including milk, grains, and spices.

The Art of Making Sweets

Crafting sweets is often an intricate and labor-intensive process. Skilled artisans, such as pastry chefs and confectioners, dedicate themselves to perfecting the art of sweet-making. The process can involve precision, patience, and an innate understanding of flavors and textures.

Sweets in Celebration and Culture

Sweets are an integral part of cultural celebrations and rituals around the world. In India, for example, sweets are exchanged during festivals and special occasions as a symbol of love and good fortune. Similarly, weddings often feature a grand display of elaborate sweets, showcasing the culinary traditions of the region.

Health Considerations

While sweets are a source of immense pleasure, it’s important to consume them in moderation. High sugar and calorie content can lead to health issues if consumed excessively. However, the enjoyment of sweets in moderation is a delightful aspect of life that connects people through the simple pleasure of sharing a sweet treat.

In conclusion, sweets are a testament to the diverse and creative world of culinary arts. Their history is a journey through time, their flavors a delight to the senses, and their cultural significance a bond that transcends borders. Whether you’re indulging in a simple piece of dark chocolate or savoring an intricately crafted dessert, sweets are a reminder of the sweetness of life itself.

Use of Plastic Boon or Bane

Nowadays, everyone uses plastic in different forms- plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic containers, etc. Plastic items are easy to carry, so it has been accepted by the common people. But it has many awful effects also.  According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), “Every minute, the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our ocean. Plastic pollution is a global problem. Approximately 7 billion of the 9.2 billion tonnes of plastic produced from 1950-2017 became plastic waste, ending up in landfills or dumped. Plastic pollution can alter habitats and natural processes, reducing ecosystems’ ability to adapt to climate change, directly affecting millions of people’s livelihoods, food production capabilities, and social well-being”. This is, in a nutshell, about the awful impact of plastic use. Keeping in mind of this,

In this article, a few points about the bad effects of plastic are highlighted, which have been collected from the website http://www.earthday.org/factsheets. As per the report, plastics are used in different forms- Disposable Plastic, Single-Use Plastics, Microplastics, and Drinking Water.

 Disposable Plastic:

1.    An estimated 583 billion plastic bottles were produced in 2021, against 100 billion produced five years ago.

2.    In 2017, packaging production constituted the highest-demanded use for plastic, with 146 million metric tons used.

3.    Around the world, people litter more than 4.5 trillion cigarette butts yearly.

Single-Use Plastics: Around 380 million metric tons of plastic are produced yearly. It is noteworthy to mention that 8.3 Billion Metric Tons (9.1 BILLION US Tons) of plastic have been produced since plastic was introduced in the 1950s. The amount of plastic produced in a year is roughly the same as the entire weight of humanity. Human beings use about 1.2 million plastic bottles per minute in total. Approximately 91% of plastic is not recycled. Roughly half of our global annual plastic production is destined for a single-use product.

Plastic has been found at 36,000 feet (approximately 11km) in the Mariana Trench, meaning not even the deepest part of the world’s oceans can escape contamination.

Over 1 million marine organisms are killed each year due to plastic pollution in the ocean.

The chances of disease on a coral reef are enhanced by 22-fold by plastics. In 2018, a huge survey of the 159 coral reefs across the Asia-Pacific region revealed the fact that over 11.1 billion plastic particles are entangling the corals, and this number is estimated to increase dramatically by 40% by 2025.

Microplastics and Drinking Water: According to a study by Orb Media on plastics and tap water, around 83% of tested water samples from major metropolitan areas worldwide were contaminated with plastic fibers. Plastic fibers were also found in bottled water produced by 11 of the world’s largest brands purchased from 19 locations in nine countries. Around 93% of bottled water showed microplastic contamination, including polypropylene, nylon, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Suggestions to Control Plastic Use: Given the above, I extend my suggestions here to control the use of plastic. Some of the suggestions are cloth bags may be used when we go to market for the purchase of fruits, vegetables, etc. When we are on tour, drinking water may be carried in metal containers.  In technically feasible production of soft cool-drink may be stopped.

The agricultural sector in India is undergoing a remarkable transformation, driven by rapid advancements in technology and innovative practices. This evolution is further accelerated by the significant presence of Agri-Start-ups and private sector entities equipped with cutting-edge technological capabilities. The integration of a robust Digital Public Infrastructure, harnessing the potential of the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning, has already demonstrated promising outcomes in this domain. Additionally, the sector is witnessing the emergence of unique themes such as hyperspectral data analysis, photo-analytics, and the retrieval of precise weather parameters through geostationary satellites. Segmentation techniques and parcel-level crop mapping are providing unprecedented insights, thereby enhancing the efficiency and precision of agricultural practices. These collective advancements signify a pivotal moment in agriculture, ushering in an era of unprecedented productivity and sustainability. Consequently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is taking strategic steps and initiatives to ensure that the exponential growth in the Agri-tech sector is appropriately leveraged for the benefit of farmers across the country.

In order to leverage these innovations, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has constituted a screening committee that comprises experts in the field from esteemed institutions such as IITs, IIMs, IISc, IISERs, etc. This also has domain experts and experts from the industry. This committee will evaluate innovative solutions that directly impact the well-being of farmers. For this, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has prepared a set of problem statements on which the proposals are being invited from the such interested entities. This has open an avenue for the entities who are working or willing to work in the agriculture sector and apply their innovative solutions to address the inherent challenges of the sector.    The agri-tech sector has seen exponential growth over the last decade due to young talents who are earnestly working for the sector. One of the challenges faced by such entities is the lack of reliable data and strategic guidance from the sector. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare will shape and provide opportunities to all such entities by providing them the necessary support in the form of the ecosystem to pilot their solutions and perfect to effectively address the challenges If the solutions is innovative then these may be implemented at nationwide.

The Ministry will invite Expressions of Interest (EoI), and proposals on the problem statements from Agri techs, start-ups, etc. to collaborate and share their expertise with the government. This inclusive approach seeks to facilitate a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge, ensuring a comprehensive approach to advancing the agricultural sector. The committee will seek presentations from potential collaborators, aiming to identify specific technologies and targeted interventions that align with the unique demands of the Indian agriculture landscape. Rigorous evaluation, including a comprehensive assessment of the concept, value proposition, and action plan, will be undertaken to gauge the feasibility and scalability of proposed initiatives. Based on this assessment, the committee will make informed recommendations, identifying suitable entities for collaboration with the Ministry. In certain cases, pro-bono partnerships may be encouraged, particularly for piloting innovations and subsequently scaling them up. Through these concerted efforts, the committee aims to drive significant progress and innovation in the agricultural domain, ultimately benefiting farmers across the nation.
