DEPLETION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

INTRODUCTION:-
There are many materials that are used to support life on earth and meet our needs called Natural resources.
E.g.Oil, coal, natural gas, metals, stone sand, air, sunlight, soil and water. Animals, birds, fish and plants are also natural resources
Types of natural resources:-
There are many ways to classify natural resources. On the basis of the resource availability and and its uses natural resources are classified into two types. They are as follows:
Renewable Natural Resources: The resources that are present in unlimited quantities and can be replenished naturally or can be sustained over a short period of time are called renewable natural resources. E.g., air, water, sunlight, soil, biomass, geothermal.
Non-renewable Natural Resources: The natural substances that are present in limited supplies and these are not replenished with the speed at which it is consumed. It is a finite resource. E.gFossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
NATURAL RESOURCES DEPLETION:
We are using natural resources endlessly everyday. Explosion of population is causing overexploitation of natural resources and with little or no care is being taken to conserve them. Therefore natural resources are depleting to meet the needs of a huge population. However, we need to understand that natural resources are finite. Even to meet the population’s needs , renewable resources are not getting enough time to replenish . Thus, we can even wonder what the condition of non-renewable resources might be. So we can say that this depletion of natural resources is quite harmful to the earth and its inhabitants.
Impact of depletion of natural resources:
Minerals are being used rapidly as we need it for almost everything from housing to business. Thus, a major decline in these minerals like coal, copper etc are being noticed. If we do not conserve them completely, one day we will run out of all of them.

Similarly, the oil reserves are also running out. We won’t be able to produce more oil and thus we won’t get any petroleum. The prices will increase and many economies will crumble due to this lack of resources.

Similarly, the rate of cutting of forests is increasing day by day. Cutting down the Aarey forest in Mumbai is a major example. The damage caused as a result of this deforestation is quite dangerous. This will increase the carbon dioxide levels and alter the water cycle on earth. The day is very near when we will face frequent floods and soil erosion which will decrease our biodiversity.

Most importantly, the way of wasting water needs to be checked right away. Many countries are facing a water crisis and we know that life is impossible without water. The farmers won’t get enough water for irrigation. This results in famine and many more deadly consequences. We must not waste these resources. We should always find ways to prevent the depletion of natural resources.

WAYS TO PREVENT DEPLETION OF NATURAL RESOURCES:-
There are many ways by which we can prevent the depletion of natural resources. The ways are as follows:-
We should reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. This can be done by stopping wastage of electricity. We should try to use carpool with your neighbors or relative and travel public transport instead.
We should stop polluting water. The freshwater bodies are running out of clean water. We must organize cleanliness drives to clean the water of these bodies. We must not let the tap run for a long time. The industries must be banned from dumping their toxic waste into the water. Furthermore, we must stop taking long showers and bath using a bucket
The most important thing is we should plant more trees and preserve our existing forests. We must not let anyone to cut down. They are a very important natural resource needed for human survival. We must use less paper to avoid cutting down of trees. We can all come together and prevent this depletion of natural resources because this depletion of natural resources is very harmful for our future.
Thus depletion of natural resources can have a very harmful consequences in future so from now onwards we must start to preserve all of them.

Cultural Relativism

Human is a social animal. He cannot survive without a society. Society gives birth to culture. The ideas, customs, practices, beliefs of a society forms it’s culture. This culture incorporates with the lives of the people belonging to a society. Cultural transmission starts from right when we are born and continues till we live. Our culture is given to us as our legacy which must be practiced and preserved. Therefore it is a given that different societies have different culture and cultural practices, some more different than others.

Generally, it has been seen that there is this notion among people that our culture is superior or that a particular culture is inferior to our culture. An “Us vs them” mentality is created which leads to perception bias in our favour. This leads to cultural misinterpretations and generalisations about other cultures. Sometimes these beliefs are so strong that they take forms of prejudices, disparity, bullying, intolerance, wars, genocide etc.
A well-known instance of this is the Nazi Germany and the holocaust of Jews.

It’s not our differences that divide us, but our own inability to accept those differences.

This is where ‘Cultural Relativism’ comes into light. Cultural relativism refers to the ability of a person to understand a culture on it’s own terms and not being judgemental towards it. It simply means that we should try to understand cultural practices of other groups in their own cultural context. This term was first used philosopher Alain Locke. It lays emphasis on the fact that people from different cultures can have relationships with respect and acknowledgement of each other’s diverse lives.

The basic goal of cultural relativism is to promote a sense of unity and to demolish the views pertaining to superiority of a particular culture over others. It also argues that there is no particular standard of judging what is good or evil and every decision is individually decided in each society. The bottom-line is that there no right or wrong in an ethical system and it is our own perception which tints our sense of morality.

Cultural relativism has two broad categories, absolute and critical.
The former argues that whatever happens within a culture has nothing to do with outsiders and therefore should not be questioned. The later forms questions about the practices in terms of who is accepting them and why.

We need to understand that there exists absolutely no culture that can be called Perfect. Cultural relativism has it’s flaws of course. Sometimes in the name of culture, we violate Human Rights but inspite of that, it is very important because it gives us objective insight, cross cultural empathy and makes us realise similarity among human cultures. It enables us to leave behind our biased mind sets and to see things in new light. It can also help to put a check on discriminatory practices and prejudiced behaviour which originates as a by-product of cultural misinterpretation. Cultural relativism important in studying and understanding other and different cultures because first and foremost we have to realise that our perception can be prejudiced while we are studying another culture. In a nutshell, cultural relativism is what we need to create a world which is equally hospitable and welcoming for everyone irrespective to their culture.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Every year on 15th June World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is celebrated. The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized it in December 2011, on the plea of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA). Every year many awareness programs take place globally to voice against the abuse taking place on elderly people.

What is Elder Abuse?

Elder abuse can be defined as “any act or lack of appropriate conduct that causes any harm or hampers the well-being of an elder person. Elder abuse is a global issue that requires attention internationally.

People often exploit and neglect the elderly. Their age makes them much vulnerable to abuse. Being old, body and mind become weak, making them unable to resist or take any action against any sort of exploitation or abuse. Elder abuse takes place in every corner of the world but is still taboo as no one talks about it.

The old people are often beaten, neglected, abandoned, and even sexually exploited. The elderly are not only exploited by outsiders, but even by their families. It mostly happens because people find them weak and feel them as a burden on them. There are many cases where children have abandoned their old parents after transferring all their parents’ property on their names by forceful means.

Abuse of the elderly can take many forms.

•          Neglect- Life necessities such as food, clothing, shelter, and medical care are not provided.

•          Verbal Abuse- Using threatening and foul language to create a sense of fear within the elderly.

•          Physical Abuse- Causing physical harm by beating and even trying to kill the elder person.

•          Social Abuse- Restricting the elderly from having any social contact with anyone to restrain them from sharing about the abuse they are facing.

•          Financial Abuse- Forcefully taking upon the elder person’s property or illegal use of their money.

These abuses not just harm the elder person physically but also mentally. Such abuses may lead to traumatic experiences by the elderly and deteriorate their mental health, which might result in depression or anxiety.

There are laws for protecting the rights of the elderly. But when no voice is raised against the abuse, how would the laws help? The person facing such abuse often declines to lodge any complaint against it. Either they have no will left to do so after suffering so much, or they think “what the society would think if they come to know about it”.

2021’s Theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

This year (2021) the theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is ‘Access to Justice’. It aims at reminding the importance to address the elderly peoples’ needs who seek recourse for any wrong happening taking place with them.

The elderly deserve and need just love, care, and respect. If today’s youth is tomorrow’s future, then the elderly is the foundation of tomorrow’s future. The knowledge we have today is what has been passed on to us through generations, through our parents; our grandparents. The elderly are the tressure box to this knowledge and life lessons who need to be cherished and not abused.

Every human has the right to live a life of dignity. And the old people are nowhere to stand distinct. They deserve the same rights as any other human being. They have the same right to enjoy their rights as others do.

Analysing the first 10 pages of ‘the immortals of meluha’

  1. Meet the protagonist. Exposition through inner monologue

Things established:

  • Today is special
  • Shiva is currently troubled
  • Bhadra is a trusted associate

In the first page itself, three important peices of information are given to the reader, but reasons are not specified, yet.

2. Important plot point introduced and dramatic question.

  1. Shiva does NOT like battle or bloodshed of any kind (important character description)

2. New character introduced(not explained)

Introduction of a character through another character is my favorite form of introduction. It helps in creating a sort of mystery around the character also the reader starts to get their own opinions on the character that the writer can later mould.

3.The most important part: A dramatic question is raised—Will Shiva accept the offer to go to Meluha?

3. About the protagonist and establishing stakes

  1. Again Shiva’s displeasure towards violence is reinforced.
  2. Information about bhadra and Shiva’s relationship and its change after Shiva became the chief is given.
  3. Shiva’s Uncle is introduced in the story.

All three of these things are developed further in the book.

4.Activity

  1. The name of the character previously introduced is revealed
  2. An idea introduced: There is a mention of a greater destiny, this will be present in the readers subconcious mind throughout the story until its explained.
  3. Again, the Readers are given more trivia about shiva’s uncle thus establishing him as an important person in Shivas life.

Just as the readers start to think about the idea, a violent scene takes place so as to bring the readers in an active state of mind. This scene helps both the protagonist as as well as the readers to form a strong opinion on the darmatic question.

5. Answering the dramatic question.

  • The dramatic question is answered.

They are going to meluha.

6. The showdown

Again there is attack from the prakritis but this time this scene shows Shiva letting the prakriti soldiers to go without harming them.

This is an illustration of the character description in the beginning:

They arent blood-thirsty idiots.

When will this violence end.

The Immortals of Meluha

And now in the end of the scene we see what we’ve been waiting all along, Meluha.

Amish sets up the story in such a way that within a few pages the plot is explained, stakes are made clear, relationships are established and we know enough about protagonist.

Amish nails the most important textbook rule of writing:

Set up immediately, don’t make the reader wait.

The rest of the book also follows the example of the beginning. It doesn’t drag, its precise and to the point. Overall immortals of meluha is a engaging and interesting book, definately deserves a read.

rise of nihilism in the contemporary world

Nihilism is a branch of philosophy which portrays life as meaningless and purposeless. This does not neccessarily make people more pessimistic towards life. In fact many people following this philosophy live life to the fullest as for them, everything in life is pointless so according to them, they’re free to do anything they want in life.

Friedrich Nietzsche is known as the father of nihilism as he embraced nihilism and rejected philosophical reasoning. For Nietzsche there was no objective order or structure in the world except what us humans gave it. In the contemporary world, due to technological advancements, many people are stuck in a 9 to 5 routine. And for this reason, many people live depressing lives. As the rat race gets intense year by year people are accepting the fact that life maybe inherently meaningless and this is giving rise to nihilists.

Whether or not this is a good thing or a bad thing, only the future can tell. But as technology progresses at a faster rate and people become more self aware of the bigger picture, a new world order maybe coming soon.

Fitness freaks

Regular exercise is one of the finest things you can do for your health. It has many benefits including improving your overall health and fitness, and reducing your risk for many chronic diseases. There are many different types of exercise; it is important that you pick the right types for you. Most people benefit from a combination of them:
• Endurance, or aerobic, activities increase your breathing and heart rate. They keep your heart, lungs, and circulatory system healthy and improve your overall fitness. Examples include brisk walking, jogging, swimming, and biking.
• Strength, or resistance training, exercises make your muscles stronger. Some examples are lifting weights and using a resistance band.
• Balance exercises can make it easier to walk on uneven surfaces and help prevent falls. To improve your balance, try tai chi or exercises like standing on one leg.
• Flexibility exercises stretch your muscles and can help your body stay limber. Yoga and doing various stretches can make you more flexible.
Fitting regular exercise into your daily schedule may seem difficult at first. But you can start slowly, and break your exercise time into chunks. Even doing ten minutes at a time is fine. You can work your way up to doing the recommended amount of exercise. how much exercise you need depends on your age and health.
Other things that you can do to make the most of your workouts include
• Choosing activities that work all the different parts of the body, including your core (muscles around your back, abdomen, and pelvis). Good core strength improves balance and stability and helps to prevent lower back injury.
• Choosing activities that you enjoy. It’s easier to make exercise a regular part of your life if you have fun doing it.
• Exercising safely, with proper equipment, to prevent injuiries Also, listen to your body and don’t overdo it.
• Giving yourself goals. The goals should challenge you, but also be realistic. It’s also helpful to reward yourself when you reach your goals. The rewards could be something big, like new workout gear, or something smaller, such as movie tickets.

IS TIME TRAVEL POSSIBLE?- Yes and No.

Avengers endgame, back to the future, and so many amazing sci-fi movies are based on time travel. Apparently, everyone loves them, but have you ever wondered if it could happen in real life? Most people would say no and answer that it is just some fantasy. However, physicists would say differently.

See the source image

There is something called ‘time dilation’ in relativity according to which time can slow down or move faster depending upon velocity(special relativistic time dilation) or gravity(gravitational time dilation).

Special relativistic time dilation

First, let’s talk about special relativistic time dilation. According to Einstein’s special theory of relativity, time in a moving frame appears to run slower. You may have heard this famous spaceship example. If you travel in a spaceship with speed closer to that of light, and return after 10 years of travel, on earth about 30 years would have passed! Talking in scientific terms, in a particular frame of reference, suppose that two events occur at the same point in space. The time interval between these events, as measured by an observer at rest in this same frame (which we call the rest frame of this observer), is  Δt0 . Then an observer in a second frame moving with constant speed relative to the rest frame will measure the time interval to be Δt where-

The denominator is always smaller than 1( u<c), so  Δt   is always larger than  Δt0    .Thus we call this effect time dilation(time getting elongated).

Now, let’s come to the other type of time dilation- gravitational. Gravitational time dilation is a form of time dilation, where the difference in elapsed time is due to the gravitational potential. The lower the gravitational potential (the closer the clock is to the source of gravitation), the slower time passes, speeding up as the gravitational potential increases (the clock getting away from the source of gravitation). Albert Einstein originally predicted this effect in his general theory of relativity and it has since been confirmed by tests of general relativity. For example, imagine that you are approaching a black hole which has gravity due to its mass(the gravitational potential is decreasing as you are moving towards the source of gravity). If your friends observe your clock, it would be seen as running slower and slower as you move ahead. Since the gravity is so strong, for them it would appear that you are moving towards the event horizon forever!  In simple terms, the closer you are to some strong source of gravity, the slower time passes for you.

Earlier, in our spaceship example, the spaceship is moving at very high velocity, and when it returns back, there is a 20 year gap. We can say that the spaceship traveled 20 years back in time. I get it, not quite fulfilling your expectations.

You see, time travelling has consequences. To further limit the possibility of time travel, we have Einstein’s equation- E=mc2 . To travel at high speeds we need a lot of energy to be synthesized within a fraction of a second, which is not possible currently.

Conclusion

So, time travel is ‘possible’, we just haven’t figured it out yet. Don’t let down your childhood fantasies . Remember that once mobile phones were a fantasy but now they are a reality. I am sure that the future won’t let us down.

curbing the corruption.

Politics is an art of making your selfish desires fulfilled, seems like national interest.

Universal Adult Franchise is a rule in India in which people above 18 years of age vote for their political parties, but the process of election is not heedless, indeed it requires money. According to the rules of election board, the parties indulged in election, cannot spend beyond 1 lakh, but this rule is known to few. Knowing this one ponders, the source from where these political parties fulfill their avarice, is ‘ We’ , the people who elect them.

Legal but corrupt | WRM in English

Elections are held once in 5 years in any state and with their onset, many political parties usher in with their symbols, slogans, rallies making clear their vision about the future of the country. In shout, they indirectly demand votes from us, indeed a handsome amount of money. Many builders, businessmen send them a hefty amount of money so that political parties can hide their illegal works. This money is used, indeed wasted in hiring thugs or given to younger boys and girls or for advertisement so that the party could win. This whole process gnaws the backbone of the honest and fair election system of India.

Corruption prevails in every government sector and no government sector or process is hurdle free or result oriented.

At length, it can be said that :

‘The citizens need to be vigilant and wise enough, to curb the roots of corruption within political parties.

It is important for citizens to be aware’.

IMPORTANCE AND VALUE OF INTERNSHIPS

With the world changing daily, the people around it needed to be the part of that growth cycle too. Getting a job in today’s market is definitely challenging and that’s where internship makes a difference. An internship is probably the most important thing to get out of your undergraduate education because internships combine classroom knowledge and theory with practical application and skills earned in professional or community settings. This is the most significant aspect of internships. They also provide many advantages to students, both while pursuing a degree and afterward when looking for a job. Students also get numerous essential professional connections through practical learning opportunities such as internships before they even graduate. Internships not only help you gain professional experience, but they also help you build your character. When it comes to hiring, there are many businesses that prefer personal attributes over professional competence. Integrity, devotion, and self-motivation are just a few of the attributes that can be taught through an internship. During an internship, a student may meet a mentor who can assist him in a variety of ways. Even when you will become successful but these lessons you learned will stay with you forever. And employers will want college graduates who have more than just qualification when they leave school; they will want individuals who have the personal traits required to do a good job. An internship’s main value is that it sharpens one’s skills, but it also helps one develop character in the workplace. Internships are a great way to learn new abilities, put them to the test, and grow as a person so you can apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to the real world. Internships are essential for students to prepare for the workforce and most firms nowadays are looking for college graduates who have prior work experience and abilities in a specific industry. While everyone hopes to leave an internship feeling elated and enthusiastic about the opportunity, there is a silver lining if you don’t enjoy the work: you’ll learn what you don’t like. And that is equally important too.

It’s also true that the presence of internships benefits more than only students. Employers will benefit from a variety of distinct advantages when they hire soon-to-be graduates. When it comes to hiring new personnel, hiring is always taking a risk in deciding whether or not an applicant is a good fit. But an internship allows a company to assess how a candidate would perform in the real world. Organizations can utilise internships to teach the up-and-coming generation of industry experts to the distinctive elements, offerings, and needs of their brand, in addition to using them to acquire an in-depth review of soon-to-be graduates. Employers can learn from students’ fresh perspectives too.

It is undeniable that internships and other experiential learning opportunities are only beneficial for boosting someone’s career. But internships aren’t just for your resume if you’re about to graduate. Their advantages aren’t confined to fresh graduates; they can be felt at any point in one’s career.

IS GURUGRAM THE BEST CITY TO LIVE IN COVID-19 ERA?

According to a report Gurugram is the most apt city to live from a Covid perspective as compared to Bengaluru and Mumbai
According to the report, Gurugram is overall the most suitable city to live from a Covid perspective as compared to Mumbai and Bengaluru

According to a report by Square Yards, Gurugram is the apt city to live during COVID-19 considering the factors like hospital infrastructure, population density and open area ratio. The study titled Suitability Index: The COVID perspective  highlights the suitability and working in three prime cities of our country- Mumbai, Bengaluru and Gurugarm with respect to COVID-19.

The report ascertains that the factors such as hospital infrastructure, population density and open area ratio are far more important than the work distance or affordability to decide where a homebuyer wants to live at a time when coronavirus disease is at it’s peak and transmitting rapidly.

According to the Suitability Index, even though the density of COVID-19 cases in Gurugram is second only to the North, presence of maximum number of hospitals/10K people, more than 40% open area and lowest population density made the area most suitable and hence sustainable and livable  from the COVID-19 perspective. Also as per the analysis, the most suitable zone found in Bengaluru were Mahadevapura, Bellandur, Devasandra and Marathahalli.

In Mumbai, the most suitable zone were found in Western suburbs and the Central suburbs.

The COVID-19  pandemic exposed the shortcomings in medical infrastructure like never before and during this time according to statistics, both Mumbai and Bengaluru offer only 1.3 and 0.30 hospitals per 10,000 people respectively on the other hand, Gurugram surpasses both the cities with 2.5 hospitals for every 10, 000 people. Mumbai had 13 of the total 24 wards severely affected with more than 50 cases per 10,000 people. In Gurugram, the North and East zones averaged 55 cases per sq km while in Bengaluru 4 zones of the total 8 zones recorded more than 200 cases per sq km. The Covid-suitability index for each city suggests that across all cities, suitability increased as people moved away from the city centres and older parts of the city towards more peripheral locations.

Contrary to the common notion, the report suggests that Mumbai has the highest open area ratio amongst the three cities at nearly 45%. Mumbai was the most densely populated with nearly 60,000 people/sq km while Gurugram had the lowest population density at approximately 4200 people/sq km.

“The Suitability Index is an attempt to bring many non-transaction elements to the forefront that can have an impact while making a home buying decision. The ‘new normal’ is here to stay and the idea is to look at factors other than proximity to work or affordability that impacts the choice of residence,” said Anand Moorthy, Business Head – Data Intelligence & Asset Management Services – Square Yards.

Not only these cities are the top real estate destinations in the country, but they are also among the top cities to be severely hit by the pandemic. This is where the relevance of a Suitability Index kicks in. The need for one’s own ‘home’ has gained an all-new dimension since 2020 due to the changes brought about by the pandemic. The study is an attempt at making the home-buying process in the Covid era slightly more pragmatic.
It highlights certain meaningful factors that today’s end users need to acknowledge while deciding to buy the right home in a pandemic like situation.
