Physical exercise can help one get out of mental stress. If one exercises regularly his neurons are active in the sense that he is able to adapt to the new environment easily, On the other case, the person who lacks exercise will be lacking inactive state of mind as the connected neurons don’t act accurately as a result the person is unable to adapt the surrounding.
THE STRESS
Research reveals the truth that stress is the primary cause of aging. Stress promotes cellular aging as the cellular structure telomere is affected and Premature aging is acquired by stress as the cells are unable to regenerate. The greater the stress, the greater is the degenerative effect on cells.
The ancient people had a high dose of cortisol and adrenaline, which comes in the danger moments and makes the body healthy. As Modern humans due to stress we acquire low doses of cortisol flowing constantly throughout the body, which finally results in health problems.
Threats lead to stress, Stress leads to digestive problems. As Prevention is always better than cure, we can avoid stress before that comes into us. We can attain the state of peace by regular practice of exercise, yoga and self care. Change is the process, we need to adapt it for the progress.

Rain of diamonds
We people live in Earth experience rain more often. It brings out joy to some and sorrow to some. Climates changes and all other factors are becoming reasons for acid rains in urban areas and many rural areas are turning into desert without rain.
In those areas, raining of water itself considered as precious thing like diamond whereas in Saturn the rain is not made of water instead they rain diamonds.

Rape crisis in India
Anatomy of Rape
Sexual assault on women is a common phenomenon in our country. Under sexual assault comes; molestation, eve-teasing, child sex abuse, rape, marital rape, domestic violence.
Of all these crimes, Rape is the most violent crime which is committed against women. According to Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, Rape means an unlawful intercourse done by a man with a woman without her valid consent.
Rape outrages a woman’s modesty. After a rape incident, a woman lives a pathetic life which includes fear, depression, guilt complex, suicidal action and social stigma.
In recent times, Rape incidents have increased manifold. According to statistics, two women are raped in the country every hour. If further statistics are to be believed, every 10 hours a girl of age 1-10 is being raped in India.
It appears that the rapists are not scared of laws. Also, cases are being reported where minors and elderly women are being raped. The recent incident which shook the nation was the gang rape of a 23 year old para-medical student in a moving bus on the streets of Delhi.
The cruelty which was shown towards the girl by the rapists filled every Indian with wrath. So much so was the anger, that thousands of people poured into the streets to demand justice for the young lady.
The protests compelled our leaders to sit up and think and now amendments of the laws concerned with sexual assault on women our underway.
Every day the newspaper reports of rape incidents. In majority of rape cases the accused is known to the victim. The accused may be a friend, a relative, neighbor.
Some cases are a rude shock to humanity like that of a five year innocent girl being raped by her neighbor. Not only he raped her, but damaged her internal organs beyond cure. Some cases have come into light wherein teachers have raped their students.
Causes of Rape
The important question which arises when we talk of rapes is what causes rape. Why rape cases are increasing at an alarming rate? First and the foremost cause of increasing rape cases is the lack of public safety. Women are not safe outside their homes and why only outside they are not safe even inside their homes.
A number of cases have been reported wherein the guilty has committed the crime in the very house of the victim. Rapes are being done in moving vehicles also which raise a question on the effectiveness of the traffic system of our country. Another important reason is the dearth of police officials and female police officers in particular. According to the Times of India, there is 1 officer for every 200 citizens.
Studies show that rape victims are more likely to report sex crimes if female police officers are available. Lack of female police further aggravates the problem.
Another very important reason is a sluggish court system of India and few convictions. India’s court system is painfully slow and for rapes that do get reported, the conviction rate is not more than 26%.
As the accused is not convicted, others think that they can go around freely and rape whosoever they like. Stigmatizing the victim and encouraging the victim to compromise gives a further impetus to this horrendous crime.
In many rural areas, the victim is pressurized to drop charges against the guilty. Not only this they are encouraged to marry their rapist by telling them that nobody will marry them now and it will bring shame to her family.
In recent times, prominent leaders and experts have blamed women’s clothing as responsible for increasing rape cases which is totally wrong. No clothing is an invitation to rape.
Remedies
The dire need of today is to curb this violent crime. The most important step to be taken in this direction is the strengthening of laws dealing with sexual assaults.
Death penalty should be imposed on a rape accused.
A woman’s squad should be formed in every district which would exclusively deal with problems of women.
Fast track courts must be established so that justice is given as early as possible.
Some NGO should start Rape Crisis Centre where victim can approach by calling a toll-free number or physically visiting the local centres. Such centre should play a vital role in supporting rape victims to cope up with the psychological trauma and also guide them to obtain legal remedy.
Conclusion
Women are wonderful daughters, sisters, wives, and mothers. They should be loved, cared, respected and should be protected.
Tools / Approaches in Urban Renewal
1) Slum Clearance
Demolition of dilapidated dwellings located in a slum. Slum clearance, slum eviction or slum removal is an urban renewal strategy used to transform low income settlements with poor reputation into another type of development or housing. This has long been a strategy for redeveloping urban communities.
2) Redevelopment
The demolition of an existing building and its replacement by a new building. Redevelopment consists of the removal of existing buildings and the reuse of cleared land for the implementation of new projects. This approach is applicable to areas in which buildings are in seriously deteriorated condition and have no preservation value, or in which the arrangement of buildings are such that the area cannot provide satisfactory living conditions. In such cases, demolition and reconstruction, of whole blocks or of small sections, is often thought to be the only solution to ensure future comfort and safety of the residents. In the majority of western countries, redevelopment has been discarded as a way to rejuvenate old city centers. However, in many developing countries, redevelopment through slum clearance and reconstruction is still regarded as the only viable way to improve housing conditions and to modernize inner-city areas.
3) Rehabilitation
The repair and improvement of existing structurally sound property. Rehabilitation, often termed conservation or preservation, can be defined as the opposite of redevelopment. It is based on preserving, repairing and restoring the natural and man-made environments of existing neighborhoods. Rehabilitation is applicable to areas where buildings are generally in structurally sound condition but have deteriorated because of neglected maintenance. It takes advantage of the existing housing stock as a valuable resource and adapts old houses to present day life and acceptable standards by providing modern facilities. Rehabilitation recognizes that the limited availability of funds for new construction and the serious housing shortage make the option of destroying already existing housing appear both unaffordable and imprudent. It recognizes the value of old neighborhoods and by preserving what is unique, ancient and specifically local, it can also contribute to the development of the tourism industry and stimulate the economy.
Concerning the impacts on the population, residential rehabilitation can take place in two distinct ways: gentrification and incumbent upgrading. Gentrification is defined as the process by which middle and upper class people move to a neighborhood, attracted by its proximity to central business districts and replace the previous working-class inhabitants. Through the process of incumbent upgrading, the residents remain in place and invest in their own time, money and energy into refurbishing their housing and improving their social conditions.
4) Housing Improvement
Improvements of dwellings by provision of essential basic amenities.
5) Conservation
To retain intact or unchanged.
6) Environmental Improvements
Main emphasis is to improve environmental conditions.
7) Economic Renewal
Improvement of economic conditions of dwellers.
MALARIA
MALARIA
Malaria can be fatal disease for human beings. Approximately 300 million people around the world get infected with malaria every year. More than 2 million people die every year due to malaria disease.
Malaria is caused by a protozoan parasite Plasmodium. This disease spreads through the bite of an insect vector- the female Anopheles mosquito feeds upon plant juice.
The name Malaria was proposed by Macculochin 1827. C.L.A. Laveran in 1880, a French physician, discovered the Malarial parasite – Plasmodium in the blood of a malaria patient. He received Nobel prize for this discovery in 1907.
Main symptoms of malaria include headache, nausea, muscular pain and high fever. Each malarial attack is of 6 to 10 hours duration and consists of the three stages:
1. Cold stage, feeling of extreme cold and shivers
2. Hot stage, high fever, faster respiration and heartbeat and
3. Sweating stage, i.e., due to profuse sweating, temperature of the body goes down to normal.
Even after the patient is cured of malaria, the patient feel weak and becomes anemic. Malaria may also secondarily cause enlargement of spleen and liver. Presence of malarial parasite can be checked by blood test.
PREVENTION-
Malaria is an infectious disease. It can spread from an infected person to a healthy person (host) by the bite of female Anopheles mosquitoes (vectors). The only way to prevent malaria is to take precaution against mosquito bites.
We can protect ourselves from the bite of mosquitoes by following methods:
1. Wire- gauge should be used on doors and windows of houses to prevent entry of mosquitoes.
2. Insect- repellents (e.g., Odomos) should be used to prevent mosquito- bite.
3. One should sleep under mosquito nets.
4. Mosquito larvae can be killed by sprinkling kerosene oil on large- sized water bodies. Some larvivorous fishes such as Gambusia, minnows or trouts or birds (e.g., ducks) can be introduced in water bodies. These animals feed on mosquito larvae and hence the population of mosquito is checked. This is called biological control of mosquito.
5. Adult mosquitoes can be killed by spraying insecticides (e.g., BHC, malathion) on the walls of human dwellings. Insecticides are chemical poisons (toxicants), hence, regulation of mosquito population by them is called chemical control. The insecticide DDT is not used in the chemical control of mosquitoes, as it persists in the environment for much longer time and can cause toxicity by accumulating in the body of fishes, birds and humans through food chain.
6. The breeding grounds should be destroyed. Thus, the ditches, puddles or swamps around human dwellings should be drained or filled. We should not allow the collection of water in any uncovered containers such as water tank, pot, cooler, flower pot, discarded tires, etc.
Ø Recently Allan Porter and his team produced a genetically engineered aquatic bacteria at National Institute of Singapore. When mosquito larvae feed on these bacteria, they get killed by the toxic substance produced by these bacteria. This can prove to be an effective biological control method against malaria.
CONTROL-
A drug named Quinine, which is extracted from the bark of Cinchona tree, is used to treat a person suffering from malaria. This drug kills most of the stages of malarial parasite. There are certain other drugs (medicines) which should be taken on the advice of doctor. Scientists are trying hard to develop an antimalarial vaccine.
Ø Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), Lucknow has developed an anti- cerebral malaria drug called – Arteether. This drug is extracted from a herbaceous plant Artemisia annua belonging to family Asteraceae.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE
DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE
What is the definition of drug and alcohol abuse?
It occurs when you use alcohol, prescription medicine, and other legal and illegal substances too much or in the wrong way. Substance abuse differs from addiction. Many people with substance abuse problems are able to quit or can change their unhealthy behavior. Addiction, on the other hand, is a disease.
Use and abuse of drugs and alcohol by teens is very common and can have serious consequences. In the 15-24 year age range, 50% of deaths (from accidents, homicides, suicides) involve alcohol or drug abuse. Drugs and alcohol also contribute to physical and sexual aggression such as assault or rape. Possible stages of teenage experience with alcohol and drugs include abstinence (non-use), experimentation, regular use (both recreational and compensatory for other problems), abuse, and dependency. Repeated and regular recreational use can lead to other problems like anxiety and depression. Some teenagers regularly use drugs or alcohol to compensate for anxiety, depression, or a lack of positive social skills.
Signs of drug and alcohol abuse
Behavioral Signs
Behavioral signs involve a person’s outward relations with the world whereas physical signs relate to the body’s manifestation of side effects due to the presence of drugs in the system. Behavioral signs include but are not limited to:
OBSESSIVE THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS:
Acquiring and using the drug become the main priorities of life while all or most other obligations including work, family, or school are sidelined.
DISREGARD OF HARM CAUSED:
Although the drug abuse is causing physical and mental distress to the individual and their loved ones, the person struggling with addiction continues using drugs or alcohol.
LOSS OF CONTROL:
Even in the face of wanting to stop or reduce their drug use, the person cannot do so.
DENIAL OF ADDICTION OR HIDING DRUG USE:
When confronted, the person battling addiction will deny or downplay their drug use. To avoid having to explain themselves to others, the person may do drugs in secret.
Drug abuse cannot remain hidden for long. Its impact is too dramatic, and the person using drugs can spiral out of control fast. Changes in behavior, neglecting responsibilities, exhausting financial resources, and engaging in criminal conduct are some of the most obvious signals of a drug problem. Family members, loved ones, and coworkers are usually in the best position to recognize a drug problem as they are familiar with the person’s behavior and habits.
Physical Signs
Physical signs of addiction can manifest as side effects of use, during an overdose, or as a result of withdrawal. It may be very difficult for someone to pinpoint the cause of the physical signs, but severe effects will require immediate medical treatment. Also, it is important to understand that withdrawal symptoms arise when the body adjusts to the absence of familiar quantities of a drug. It is a natural process, but withdrawal can be dangerous.
General physical signs of addiction include but are not limited to:
· Enlarged or small pupils
· Sudden weight loss or gain
· Bloodshot eyes
· Insomnia
· Unusual body odors
· Poor physical coordination
· Looking unkempt
· Slurred speech
Typical signs of an overdose may include but are not limited to:
· Drowsiness or trouble walking
· Agitation
· Aggression or violent behavior
· Difficulty breathing
· Nausea and vomiting
· Hallucinations
· Delusions
· Loss of consciousness
Alcohol and Drug Abuse: Prevention and Control
Young and adolescent minds could be molded in any direction depending on the kind of exposure they get. They might befriend abusers and get into the habit of drinking, smoking or taking drugs. At this point in time, it is the responsibility of the parents as well as the teachers to handle the issue sensitively and guide them in the right direction.
Here are certain measures which need to be taken to prevent and control alcohol and drug abuse.
- In the Indian society, the youth are often pushed beyond their limits to excel in every field. Parents want their kids to outperform their peer in studies, sports, creativity, and every other activity. Under excess pressure, the child often has the tendency to take up alcohol and drugs as a resort.
- Persistent counselling is required to teach the child to deal with failures, pressures, stress, and disappointments. In fact, guiding them towards productive activities such as music, painting, yoga, sports or one of their hobbies could also help.
- Children often pick up habits from their closed ones. Thus, the attitude of parents and older siblings towards alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs also affect the child’s choices.
- In case the child is stressed out and on the verge of abuse, help must be sought from parents or even trusted friends who may guide them in the right direction, thereby helping him vent out their anxiety and guilt.
- Parents must stay connected with the child, keeping a track of his whereabouts at all times. Spending more family time together will help them stay close and honest with their parents.
- If it is found that children have fallen prey to alcohol and drug abuse, their friends must immediately bring this to the notice of their parents or teachers, so that the latter could take remedial measures for the same.
- However, despite all the prevention measures, if unfortunately, the child does get into the abuse, seek professional aid. There are a number of rehabilitation centres, de-addiction programs and qualified psychiatrists who would help to get rid of the problem.
Radburn Concept
Radburn is located within the Borough of Fair Lawn, Bergen County, New Jersey, 12 miles from New York City. Radburn, a planned community, was started in 1929 by the City Housing Corporation from the plans developed by Clarence Stein and Henry Wright. It is America’s first garden community, serving as a worldwide example of the harmonious blending of private space and open area. The intent was to build a community which made provisions for the complexities of modern life, while still providing the amenities of open space, community service and economic viability. The community was intended to be a self-sufficient entity, with residential, commercial and industrial areas each supplementing the needs of others.
Radburn was designed to occupy one square mile of land and house some 25,000 residents. However, the Great Depression limited the development to only 149 acres. It includes 430 single family homes, 90 row houses, 54 semi-attached houses and a 93 apartment unit, as well as a shopping center, parks and amenities. It also consist of
- Residential areas
- 149 acres of interior parks
- Walkways
- 2 swimming pools
- 4 tennis courts
- Playgrounds
- Archery plaza and a school
- 2 outdoor basketball courts
- A community center, which houses administrative offices, library, gymnasium, clubroom, service and maintenance areas
Features of Radburn City
- Super Block
- Specialized Highway system
- Complete separation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic
- Park as backbone of the neighborhood
- Turned around houses
Components of Radburn City
- Hierarchical transportation systems
- Cul-de-sacs
- Footpath systems
- Underpasses
- Shopping center
- Ideal size of 30,000 people
- Homogeneity
- Large-scale development
- Clustered superblock
- Mixed-use
- Interior park
Failure of Radburn Planning
- The design of Radburn believed that people would actively use the front of the houses facing the greenways. In reality, people come and “leave” from the back of the houses and the vehicles, not pedestrian access.
- More people and children were walking and playing in the little driveways and cul-desacs than on the actual greenways.
- The market has repeatedly shown that homeowners prefer more personal land around their homes to living on tiny lots and sharing a large green space in common.
