Analysing the first 10 pages of ‘the immortals of meluha’

  1. Meet the protagonist. Exposition through inner monologue

Things established:

  • Today is special
  • Shiva is currently troubled
  • Bhadra is a trusted associate

In the first page itself, three important peices of information are given to the reader, but reasons are not specified, yet.

2. Important plot point introduced and dramatic question.

  1. Shiva does NOT like battle or bloodshed of any kind (important character description)

2. New character introduced(not explained)

Introduction of a character through another character is my favorite form of introduction. It helps in creating a sort of mystery around the character also the reader starts to get their own opinions on the character that the writer can later mould.

3.The most important part: A dramatic question is raised—Will Shiva accept the offer to go to Meluha?

3. About the protagonist and establishing stakes

  1. Again Shiva’s displeasure towards violence is reinforced.
  2. Information about bhadra and Shiva’s relationship and its change after Shiva became the chief is given.
  3. Shiva’s Uncle is introduced in the story.

All three of these things are developed further in the book.

4.Activity

  1. The name of the character previously introduced is revealed
  2. An idea introduced: There is a mention of a greater destiny, this will be present in the readers subconcious mind throughout the story until its explained.
  3. Again, the Readers are given more trivia about shiva’s uncle thus establishing him as an important person in Shivas life.

Just as the readers start to think about the idea, a violent scene takes place so as to bring the readers in an active state of mind. This scene helps both the protagonist as as well as the readers to form a strong opinion on the darmatic question.

5. Answering the dramatic question.

  • The dramatic question is answered.

They are going to meluha.

6. The showdown

Again there is attack from the prakritis but this time this scene shows Shiva letting the prakriti soldiers to go without harming them.

This is an illustration of the character description in the beginning:

They arent blood-thirsty idiots.

When will this violence end.

The Immortals of Meluha

And now in the end of the scene we see what we’ve been waiting all along, Meluha.

Amish sets up the story in such a way that within a few pages the plot is explained, stakes are made clear, relationships are established and we know enough about protagonist.

Amish nails the most important textbook rule of writing:

Set up immediately, don’t make the reader wait.

The rest of the book also follows the example of the beginning. It doesn’t drag, its precise and to the point. Overall immortals of meluha is a engaging and interesting book, definately deserves a read.

How I Topped Boards and You Can Too! – Book review

Are you a student who is worried about your 10th grade or 12th grade board exams? Well, you need not worry anymore. ‘How I Topped the Boards and You Can Too’ by Gaurav Sood has all the tips and tricks you need to excel, not only in boards but also in other school exams. You do not need to be a topper to top; anyone, me, you and even your dog can do it(or maybe not your dog)!

This book is an honest guide. It contains all the details regarding one’s preparation, from day 1 to the finals. All the eating habits, sleeping habits, notes preparation, and other important aspects of a student’s life are covered. At first look it might seem like a self-brag book rather than a self-help book, but as you progress further, you understand the author’s emotions. All his so-presumed brags serve as good inspirations. One can both be great at academics and life. Also, the tips are not some magical spells, you do need to add your hard work to make them work, after all this is not some fantasyland(sorry to remind you but you live in a boring, no-magic world).

This book indeed helped me to score great in my exams. It is unlike other self-help books. In this book the author dives deeper,  giving us his own experiences as a teen. All the myths regarding ‘toppers’ are shattered throughout the book. Moreover, all the help tips are not just his opinions or some make believe, he has given scientific explanations and referred to scientific researches too. I loved this book even more because of the interesting way in which it’s written. The author has used amusing language to keep the readers indulged. You may or may not find some very interesting memes in this book(I loved them!). The summary chapters are wonderful; they provide a quick glance of all the preparation tips.

The book is more than a mere guide. It is a motivation, asking us to seek the best within ourselves. As Gaurav Sood says, “If you want to be the best, you’ve got to want it more than everyone else. It has to come from within.”

I wish to rate this book a 5 stars since it truly deserves it. I recommend this to all teens who are too stressed for the boards.

About the author:

Gaurav Sood graduated from The Doon School as the all-India ISC Board examination topper in 2008. He secured 99 percent, the highest marks in India’s history, and was felicitated with various national awards.

He then did his bachelor’s in economics from St Stephen’s College, where he secured the most sought- after campus-recruitment offer—a role as one of the youngest management consultants at McKinsey & Company.

Gaurav then took his GMAT and TOEFL exams, where he got a near-perfect 780 and a perfect 120, respectively, and is currently on a full scholarship at the University of Oxford.

In his free time, Gaurav can either be found trying to (unsuccessfully) emulate Roger Federer on the tennis court or tormenting people in the vicinity with his music, under the name Rooftop Sundays. He’s also a terrible cook, who, by some miracle, once managed to explode five eggs. Understandably, he’s now banned from his mother’s kitchen.

The Midnight Circus- A confusing wonder

The Midnight Circus is a 2011 historical fantasy by Erin Morgenstern and revolves around the lives of Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair. Set in Victorian-era London, the book follows a magic duel between the apprentice of Prospero the Enchanter and Mr. Alexander. The duel is intended to be a test of their respective teaching methods. Celia Bowen is the daughter of Prospero and is trained under his watchful eye. What starts as an involved mentorship, turns into a toxic relationship. Prospero doesn’t see Celia as a daughter, but as a contestant, one who is capable of winning him a duel he has lost until now. Marco is taught differently. Alexander rarely interacts with him. He lives alone in an apartment with only books to keep him company.

After their respective training, they are both sent to work at the Midnight Circus, Celia as an impressionist and Marco as the proprietor’s assistant.

This is where the story really begins. Due to its non-linear narrative, this book does make for a confusing read, but Morgenstern’s beautiful descriptions and masterful storytelling more than makeup for this. The book has a somewhat gothic aesthetic but oh! does it own it. At no point in the story does the reader feel alienated or disconnected.

Balancing multiple narratives while simultaneously creating an engaging narrative, Morgenstern really doesn’t disappoint. The twists are unpredictable and leave the reader exhilarated.

I would strongly recommend this book to lovers of historical fantasies who don’t mind a bit of a challenge.

This book draws a lot of references from an island called “OKINAWA” where there are more than 24.5 inhabitants of age more than 100 for every 1,00,000 people, here everyone has a purpose if not they help each other as a community to find the true purpose.

The book Ikigai beautifully tried to explaining the deep art of staying young while growing old. It gives the references of five blue zones in the world where residents of their places live longer than the average. The five blue zones are as follows:

Book Review: HOW TO WIN FRIENDS & INFLUENCE PEOPLE by Dale Carnegie

How to win friends & Influence people is a beautiful book about building a human relationship which was first published in 1937 with 500+ copies.

How was Book written:

used to conduct the educational course for business and professional men and women in New York on public speaking and later on wrote the book.

Before Dale wrote this book, he made thousands of research and practice of what was being told in the book. Research, investigations, and experiments on public relations were held in Carnegie foundation for the advancement of teaching.

Also, Researches were held at the Carnegie Institute of technology which revealed that

“Even in such technical lines as engineering, about 15% of one’s financial success is due to one’s technical knowledge and about 85% is due to skill in human engineering- the personality and ability to lead people”.

A person who has technical knowledge plus the ability to express ideas is the person headed with higher earning power.

In preparation for this book, Dale Carnegie read from every resource possible which included reading biographies of successful people, research papers, reading magazines, news reports, psychologists, and also engaged multiple employees for research work for years to get themselves involve in libraries reading about success and dealing with people. He also shared that he went through multiple biographies of the same person, again and again, to extract exactly what was required.

The book was definitely not written out of word but was written out of experiences of thousands of adults.

After 15 years of research and proper revised studies came to this book which within time turned to be the best seller and around 18 million books have already been sold.

How will this book change your life:

This book will be a total failure for those who are reading and not practicing the actions described in the book, Dale calls this book an Action Book. Knowledge is never known if action is not made with it. Once you start reading the book you will get to know that it is divided into segments in the form of chapters and the author described that if you complete 3 chapters and find there is no change that occurred in you then this book will be a total failure for you.

Remember: This Book is an action book.

Nine Suggestions on How to get the most out of the book:

  1. A deep desire to learn: If you have vigorous determination to increase your ability to deal with people keep reminding yourself that how these principles will lead to getting a richer and happier life.

  1. Read each chapter thoroughly :

Read each chapter and practice what is been written considering it as an action book. If you are merely reading just for fun then you will not get the best out of the book.

  1. Stop frequently reading:

Don’t read in hasty, you will not get anything like this. Just think about how can you practically implement each suggestion.

  1. Mark what is important:

Keep your crayon, pen, pencil, highlighter, or sticky note and mark what you feel is important giving it a 4-star rating (****)

  1. Review and apply:

Reading something thoroughly will not provide results, keep the book on your desk and keep revising it every month. Consider this book as your handbook. Keep constantly impressing yourself by applying this everywhere.

  1. Learn by Doing:

If you desire to master building human relationships apply these rules.

  1. Charge yourself penalty

Ask your near once that after violating any rule. They ask you a specific amount. Make this a mastery game.

  1. Maintain an engagement book:

Keep a record of all the appointments, meetings, call to be handled. Along with writing down your task for the week and do follow them, if you miss any at the end of the day notice why did you fail to do that and if you succeed doing any compare with the failed one and again try, this way you will surely improve.

  1. At the end of the book, there are several blank pages provided to write down if you applied any suggestions and it worked the way described in the book. Also put the date, where it was applied. Keeping such records will inspire you to do more and better.

So these are the rules which are to be followed while reading this book.

Dale guaranteed 100% success if followed the rules in the same manner written.

How to win friends is divided into 4 parts:

  1. Fundamental technique in handling people.
  2. 6 ways to make people like you.
  3. How to win people your way of thinking.
  4. Be a leader: How to change people without giving offers or arousing resentments.

Dale Carnegie excellently explained all these parts by 100’s of examples of great leaders like Abraham Lincon, Benjamin franklin, and many.

This book will help you achieve that how you can deal with people effectively, achieving your target to get your work done. I won’t mention everything about the book but yes once you start reading I promise this will be a life-changing handbook. When I first started reading, I went through the rules of how to get the most out of the book and followed all 9 rules mentioned above.

Some of the fundamental techniques in handling people

     PART 1

  1. Don’t criticize condemn or complain.

If you complain to anyone maybe your friends, family members, siblings, or anyone else then that is the biggest mistake you are attempting. Rather if we start appreciating about small things they do, that will generally make them more to do. If you find mistakes and criticize people, eventually will end up person stop doing work with the same enthusiasm.

  1. Give honest and sincere appreciation

This principle is key to success making people turn to your side which can be achieved by appreciating fellow members and your teammates. Wonder you do some work for any organization and your boss appreciates you honestly saying “You did an incredible job, and we need a client like you”. What would you do after listening to this?

Yes, obviously we would want to work more with more potential to be appreciated in the same manner and get that feeling of importance.

  1. Arouse in the other person an eager want

This can be achieved only in one way and that one way arises by giving what person need. If you attempt to make a person agree with your point which ultimately has your benefit how would you do that? We can do so by also keeping the other persons’ need and offer them to make your work done.

PART 2

  1. Become genuinely interested in other people

We generally fail not thinking other’s points of view. If you want other people to put your point can be only done if you are a good listener and becomes equally and genuinely interested in the other person’s point.

  1. Smile

Trust me this works magic. Smile is a trick to make another person like you and follow your way. A smile doesn’t need to be a great task for you right?

Just giving a pleasant positive smile can easily make your work easy. Just try!

  1. Remember that the person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language

This is what we all can relate to. Anyone calling us by our name with the best tone is so encouraging making an urge to respect the person who called. This also makes other people get that feeling of importance by loudly addressing him/her name.

  1. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves

We all like to tell our point and that gives us relief but what if we don’t listen to the other person’s point. Yes, it’s important to equally give importance to other people and hear their views. This will result in a good friendship-making bond stronger and will maintain a healthy understanding with your client, friend, or anyone you are dealing with.

  1. Talk in terms of the other person’s interest

This is how to interest people. Roosevelt said, “All leaders know, that the royal road to a person’s heart is to talk about the things he or she treasures the most”.

  1. Make the other person feel important—and do it sincerely

This is about How to make people like you instantly.

William James said, “The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.”

PART 3

  1. The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it

Opera tenor Jan Peerce said “When one yells, the other should listen—

because when 2 people yell. There is no communication, just noise, and

bad vibrations.”

2. Show respect for the other person’s opinions. Never say, ‘You’re wrong’

Don’t argue with your customer or your spouse or your adversary. Don’t

tell them they are wrong, don’t hem stirred up. Use a little diplomacy.

3. If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically

When we are right, let’s try to win people gently and tactfully to our way

of thinking, and when we are wrong—let’s admit our mistakes quickly

with enthusiasm.

‘By fighting you never get enough, but by yielding you get more than you

     expected.’

4. Begin in a friendly way

Sun can make you take off your coat more quickly than the wind; and kindliness, a friendly approach, and appreciation can make people change they are more readily than all the bluster and storming in the world.

Lincoln said: ‘A drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall.’

5. Get the other person saying ‘yes, yes’ immediately.

He who treads softly goes far.

6. Let the other person do a great deal of the talking

Safety valve in handling complaints.

7. Let the other person feels that the idea is his or hers

This is about how we can achieve Cooperation

8. Try honestly to see things from the other person’s

This will be one of the stepping—stones of your career. Try to think from another person’s point of view.

9. Be sympathetic with the other person’s ideas and desires

This will stop arguments, eliminate ill feelings, create goodwill. And make the other person listen attentively.

10. Appeal to the nobler motives

An appeal that everybody likes.

11. Dramatize your ideas

The movies do it. TV does it. Why don’t you do it?

12. Throwdown a challenge

When nothing else works, try this

      PART 4

BE A LEADER: HOW RO CHANGE PEOPLE WITHOUT GIVING                  OFFICE OR AROUSING RESENTMENT

  1. Begin with praise and honest appreciation

If you Must find Fault, This is the way to begin

2. Call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly

How to criticize—And Not Be Hated for it

3. Talk about your own mistakes before

Talk about Your own Mistakes First before criticizing the other person

4. Ask questions instead of giving direct orders

No one Likes to Take orders

5. Let the other person save face

6. How to spur people on to success

Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be “hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise”

7. Give a Dog a Good Name

Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.

  1. Make the Fault Seem Easy to Correct

Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct

8. Making People Glad to do What You Want

Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest,

Dale Carnegie excellently explained all these parts by 100’s of examples of great leaders like Abraham Lincon, Benjamin Franklin, and many.

This book will help you achieve that how you can deal with people effectively, achieving your target to get your work done. I won’t mention everything about the book but yes once you start reading I promise this will be a life-changing handbook. When I first started reading, I went through the rules of how to get the most out of the book and followed all 9 rules mentioned above.

Book Review: One Indian Girl by Chetan Bhagat

Book Review: One Indian Girl by Chetan Bhagat

One Indian girl written by Chetan Bhagat is a well-known novel written in 2016. The best thing is that Book is written in an easy and understandable language of about 272 pages. Once you start reading and going through the book, you can end in just one to two sitting.

Coming to the review part of the novel:

One Indian girl is a story of an Indian Punjabi girl Radhika Mehta, who deals to balance much with career and her love life. She always ends up with different thoughts and confusion. Radhika is brilliant in her academics but remains unpopular in college and the main reason for this is her dull complexion. She was always been judged throughout her studies.

On the other hand, her elder sister Aditi is beautiful, fair, and popular in her college. This makes Radhika feel always confused with the thought of society in today’s world and she remains confused with the fact that why society prefers good looking than skills.

When I involved in getting myself into the book, I could feel Radhika dealing with problems that every Indian girl in one or the other way needs to go through all these problems.

On one end she works hard and manages to get admission to SRCC also known as Shri Ram College of Commerce and then continues with her higher studies for MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. Later on, she gets placed with the earning of 48 lacs per annum in New York city. This makes her mom in trouble with the thought of how would she find a suitable groom for her. Radhika along with her work manages her love life and is happy with what she achieved regardless of what others wanted her to do. She is confident, ambitious, and hardworking. She knows in no way a man and woman need to be compared that who is earning more.

Radhika starts earning in New York and finds a guy named Debashish who is an advertising agency in New York. Later they turn to be good friends and he asks her for the date. They start living relation and at the same time Radhika’s hard work became no less and she kept on working more. She later broke up with him and they part ways. Later Radhika gets shifted to a new city and gets hired there and found Neel as his boss’s boss who was 20 years older than Radhika, and they both started dating. Later realizing Neel was already married, Radhika leaves him.

The family pressure on the other hand was no less in any way to get Radhika to marry, and in all way, her mother convinces her to get married. This way Radhika continues dealing with problems relates the story of many girls with dreams.

What this book felt like:

In my opinion, Chetan Bhagat did a fantastic job covering the journey of an Indian girl and how she deals with all the problems where on one hand girls are allowed to study and on the other hand she is preached not to gain more money than the man. The difference makes the girl uncomfortable to digest with the thought process of man and society and eventually she always ends up being sad and confused.

This Novel will be better if you are a beginner in reading and will make you realize what thoughts are built in the situation and how a woman deals with each of them. And mostly Indian women’s who deals with such tough situation where they come up with deep confusions which society decides for her. Radhika in every way is a perfect example representing the troubles of an Indian girl which is beautifully written by Chetan Bhaghat.

Hope it helps!
