11th July – World Population Day

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled the new population policy today, saying increasing population is the root of major problems, including inequality prevailing in the society.

“Population control is the primary condition for the establishment of an advanced society. Let us, on this ‘World Population Day’, take a pledge to make ourselves and the society aware of the problems arising from the increasing population”

Yogi Adityanath tweeted

Population Explosion in India

Baby boom or population explosion is one of the major problems being faced by India. India is an overpopulated country, the second largest in the world after China. Thanks to the progress of medical science, the mortality rate has appreciably declined and the life expectancy increased. These have resulted in rapid growth in the population of children, youngsters and those above sixty years of age. These population trends have further complicated the matters and there is heavy pressure on the country’s economic and natural resources. The baby boom has very adversely affected our economy, planning and development.

According to 2010 census, India’s population stood at 12.5 billion. It means India is the land of 20% of the world’s population with just 2.42 percent of the earth area. The average density in terms of population is 350 persons per sq. km. Which varies from place to place and state to state. At the present rate of growth in our population it is feared that in the coming years India would beat China behind . The increasing number of babies has set alarm bells ringing. The problem has created many other serious difficulties like unemployment, food scarcity, poverty, illiteracy, starvation, shelterlessness, insanitation, pollution and so on.

More than 5,500 new mouths are there every day to be fed. Over 1.3 million people are added to our population every year. It means India’s population would double within the next few years. The number of people is multiplying very fast and there seems no effective check on it. This explosion in population has nullified all our economic and developmental achievements. The planners, policy makers, economists and leaders feel on the horns of the dilemma. In these circumstances, it has become almost impossible to improve the quality of life and living standard to an appreciable level. It has neutralized all efforts of poverty alleviation and obtaining of sustainable food security. The enormity of the problem has been realised but matching and commensurate measures to check the baby boom and control the rise in the population have not been taken.

The fertility in Indian women is very high. Here a girl of 15-16 years of age is mature enough to conceive and deliver a baby, if married. The tropical climate has further aggravated the situation. Most of the people in village, towns and slums are totally unaware of the family planning methods and measures. They still believe children to be the gift of gods and regard them as divine ornaments of a woman. Small and marginal farmers, daily labourers, mill workers etc. have large families and refuse to plan their families. The backward and most populated States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh etc. have abnormally high rate of population growth. In these States the use of contraceptives like condoms, copper Ts etc. has declined in recent years. We are still groping in the dark as far as population stabilisation is concerned. We have to stabilise the population in relation to our resources.

In spite of 60 years of independence there has been no national policy on population. Experts believe that we are decades behind in population stabilisation in comparison to China. They opine that as long as elementary education and primary health care are neglected nothing concrete and palpable can be achieved in this matter. What is needed is emulation of Kerala’s demographic transformation but is seems rather impossible unless the same literacy rate prevails in other States as it does in Kerala. Economic and literary backwardness are major factors of baby boom in India as is evident from the demographic figures in such backward States as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan etc. Lack of common civil code is another stumbling block in strictly adhering to the 2 children family norm. Our leaders should rise to the occasion and realise the urgency to check the baby boom. They should come forward with a firm, specific and result-oriented national policy on population and family planning.

Political Parties

Political parties are the voluntary associations of individuals with broad ideological identity who agree on some policies, formulate an agenda and programme for the society.Political parties seek to implement thier policies by winning people’s support through election.Parties vary in size and in the ways they organize themselves as well as in the ways they organize themselves as well as in their policies.Any political party has three basic components
• the leader
• the active members
• the followers

Importance of political parties

Political parties are the backbone of democracy.Parties are not part of the formal arrangement of a government but they are essential elements to form the government. They formulate public opinion. They serve as intermediaries between the citizen and the policy makers.

A party is recognized if
• it has been engaged in political activity for five years
• its candidates secure at least six percent of total votes in the last general election.

Characteristics of Political parties

Political parties

• consist a group of persons of common goals and shaved values.
• have its own ideology and programme.
• capture power only by constitutional means.
• endeavour to promote the national interest and national welfare.

Types of Party system

There are three major types of Party system.

Single party system:
a system in which a single political party has the right to form the government.Single party is existed in the communist countries such as China.North Korea and Cuba.

Bi-party system:
In Bi – Party system the power is usually shared between two parties.Of the two parties one becomes the ruling party and the other becoms opposition.eg Bi – Party system can be seen in U.K.(the labour and the conservative party) and in U.S.A(the Republican party and the Democratic party)

Multi – party system:
When the competition for power is among three or more parties, the system is known as multi party system. This type of party system is in existence in India, France, Sweeden and Norway etc.

Party system in India

Countries that follow a federal system have two kinds of parties.India’s party system originated in the late 19th century. In fact India has the largest number of political parties in the world. In India we find the existence of political parties at three levels. They are National parties, Regional parties, and Registered but unrecognised parties (independent candidates). Every party in the country has to register with Election Commission.

Criteria for Recognition

The election Commission of India has some criteria for the recognition of political parties in India.

Recognized parties

Parties that fulfill these criteria are called recognized parties. They are given a unique symbol by the Election Commission.A registered but unrecognized political party cannot contest election on its own symbol.Thia party has to choose one symbol form free symbol ‘poll panel’ announced by the Election Commission.

Majority party

The political party whose number of candidates elected is more than the others is called the majority party. The Majority party forms and runs the government. They select and appoint their ministers to run the government. They play a decisive role in making laws for the country.

Minority party

Those with lesser number of elected candidates are called the minority party.

Opposition party

The party which gets second largest number of seats next to the majority party in the election is called the Opposition party. An effective opposition of the democracy. They are as important as that of ruling party. They check the autocratic tendencies of the ruling party. They critically examine the policies and bills introduced by the government. They raise their voice on the failures and wrong policies. They highlight important issues which are not acted upon the Government. The leader of the Opposition party enjoys the rank of Cabinet Minister.

Coalition Government

In a Muliparty system a single party sometimes may not secure the majority required to form the government. In such a case, some parties join together to form the government.Such government is called Coalition Government.

Electoral symbols and its importance

An electoral symbol is a standardized symbol allocated to a political party. They paly an important role in elections. They can be easily identified, understood, remembered and recognized by the voters. The election Commission has stopped allocating are the lion and the elephant. The only exceptions are the lion and the elephant. The symbol of nationally recognized parties is standard throughout India. That symbol will not be allocated to any other party or individual.state parties are allocated to certain symbols that no other party to certain symbols that no other party can use the symbol in that particular state but which different parties in different states can use the same symbol.(e.g.Shiv sena in Maharashtra and Jharkhand Mukti Morsha in Jharkhand use bow and arrow as their symbol). Both National and Regional parties trigger the growth of the nation and work for the welfare of the people.

FOOD PRESERVATION

Food preservation is the process of prevention of food from decay or spoilage, by storing in a condition fit for future use. Food is preserved to
✓increase the shelf life of food
✓retain the colour, texture, flavour and nutritive value
✓increase food supply
✓decrease wastage of food

Methods of Food Preservation

The various method of food preservation are explained below.

Drying

Drying is the process of preservation of food by removal of water/moisture content in the food. It can be done either by sun – drying, (e.g. cereals, fish ) or vacuum drying (e.g. milk powder, cheese powder ) or hot air drying (e.g. grapes, dry fruits, potato flakes ). Drying inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts and moulds.

Smoking

In this process, food products like meat and fish are exposed to smoke. The drying action of the smoke tends to preserve the food.

Irradiation

Food irradiation is the process of exposing food to optimum levels of ionizing radiations like x – rays, gamma rays or UV rays to kill harmful bacteria and pests and to preserve its freshness.

Cold storage

It is a process of storing the perishable foods such as vegetables, fruits and fruit products, milk and milk products etc. at low temperature. Preserving the food products at low temperature slows down the biological and chemical reactions and prevents its spoilage.

Freezing

Freezing is one of the widely used methods of food preservation. This process involves storing the below 0°C at which microorganisms cannot grow, chemical reactions are reduced and metabolic reactions are also delayed.

Pasteurization

Pasteurization is a process of heat treatment of liquid food products. e.g. For preservation of milk and beverages. This process also involves boiling of milk to a temperature of 63°C for about 30 minutes and suddenly cooling to destroy the microbes present in the milk.

Canning

In this method of food preservation, most vegetables, fruits, meat and dairy products, fruit juices and some ready-to-eat foods are processed and stored in a clean, steamed air tight containers under pressure and then sealed. It is then subjected to high temperature and cooled to destroy all microbes.

Addition of Preservatives

Food can be preserved by adding natural and synthetic preservatives.

Natural preservatives

Some naturally available materials like salt, sugar and oil are used as food preservatives.

Addition of salt

It is one of the oldest methods of preserving food. Addition of salt removes the moisture content in the food by the process of osmosis. This prevents the growth of bacteria and reduces the activity of microbial enzymes. Meat, fish, gooseberry, lemon and raw mangoes are preserved by salting. Salt is also used as a preservative in pickles, canned foods etc.

Addition of sugar

Sugar/Honey is added as a preservative to increase the shelf life of fruits and fruit products like jams, jellies, squash, etc. The hygroscopic nature of sugar/honey helps in reducing the water content of food and also minimizing the process of oxidation in fruits.

Addition of oil

Addition of oil in pickles prevents the contact of air with food. Hence microorganisms cannot grow and spoil the food.

Synthetic preservatives

Synthetic food preservatives like sodium benzoate, citric acid, vinegar, sodium meta bisulphate and potassium bisulphate are added to food products like sauces, jams, jellies, packed foods and ready-to-eat foods. These preservatives delay the microbial growth and keep the food safe for long duration.

How To Work Hard Without Burning Out

Do you ever feel that the demands of your job are too much? If so, that’s not a surprise. Modern-day life demands much of us as human beings.

That has been the case for decades. And often, those high demands result in burnout. Researchers have studied the phenomenon of burnout from the 70s. The results? It’s not good.

Research shows that high levels of burnout are associated with the following issues:

  • Anxiety.
  • Depression.
  • Sleep disturbance.
  • Memory impairment.
  • Neck pain.

And there’s more. Burnout increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
And there’s even more. But I think you get the point.

So it’s safe to say that working hard has a price. Personally, I’m very well aware of these risks. I’ve experienced stress because of high job demands in the past.

It doesn’t matter whether your manager has high demands, or whether you have high demands of yourself.

Both result in the same thing: You can’t deal with the daily demands, and that’s what will exhaust you.

How do you prevent that? Unfortunately, that answer is not straightforward. Scientific research only investigates cause and effect.

We know that high job demands increase the risk of burnout. But how can you keep up with the high demands of modern-day work, and not burnout?

I’ve found that there’s not a single answer to that question. No one can say: Do XYZ and you will never burnout.

It’s much better to know yourself, know your job, and understand one thing: Hard work is great, but not at all least.

I can’t give you a blueprint. But what I can do is share with you how I personally prevent burning out.

Over the last 1,5 years, I’ve been working 6 or 7 days a week. And in that period, I just went on one 10-day holiday. I also don’t feel like I need a holiday — a feeling that I had every six months in the past.

I’ve worked hard. Almost every day. But I’ve also managed to stay sane (most of the time). Here’s how I did it.

1. Love What You Do

Let’s get the cliché out of the way first. Work is a lot easier when you enjoy it. We all know what. But did you know that you can also learn to enjoy your current job?

You have two choices:

  1. Complain and say that you hate your crappy job.
  2. Make the best of it.

Sometimes we forget that we always have the ability to decide. If you hate your job, that’s your decision. Marcus Aurelius put it best:

“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

But you can also choose to get better at what you do. And if that’s not possible, see it as a temporary place.

We’ve all had jobs that we didn’t like. Just deal with it and find something else. But in the meantime, you better enjoy what you do. If you search hard enough, you can always see the bright side of everything.

2. Don’t Overestimate Yourself

Some of us think we can handle everything that comes on our way.

“Do you want to take on this project?”
“I think you should go for this promotion.”
“Do you want to speak at our event?”

Yes, Yes, YES!

But here’s the thing: You’re not superman or superwoman.

Sometimes it’s time to say: No, no, NO.

3. Ask For Help

Hello there, your proud person, who never asks for help!

“I can do it on my own,” is probably your mantra.

Sure, you’re awesome and all. But no one can do it on their own. You need help. You need a support system. Don’t even think you can do it by yourself.

Reach out to colleagues, friends, managers, family, or any person you know. People will understand. And if they don’t, they are not your friends.

4. Don’t Feel Guilty

Do you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders? Do you feel like you’re responsible for your family, friends, employees, or other people? It’s time to lighten up.

First of all, people can take care of themselves — they don’t need you to be their hero. And second, what kind of leader, friend, spouse, are you if you burnout? Exactly.

5. What’s The Point?

Sometimes we do shit that doesn’t make any sense at all. So ask yourself that question. No good answer? Don’t do it.

I’m all about practicality. What does that mean? Here’s the definition:

“Mindful of the results, usefulness, advantages or disadvantages, etc., of action or procedure.”

The result is the only thing that matters.

6. You Can’t Have It All

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I can’t have everything I want. I can’t spend time with friends, family, work hard, go to the gym, travel, at the same time. Realistically, I have to pick one or two things to focus on.

Life is about making decisions. If you want to do things well, with all your attention, you have to make some sacrifices.

You only have limited time. You can’t buy more of it. So you have to spend it wisely. How will you spend it? Decide and stick with it. FOMO is for the delusional.

7. Exercise Every Day

Daily exercise reduces stress, anxiety, and improves your focus. “I know it.” Well, why don’t you do it then?

Since I’ve been running every day, I’ve gotten a lot better with dealing with stress. Daily exercise is a must. It’s simple: Just do it every day. No excuses.

8. CHILL

Honestly, it’s okay to do nothing sometimes. It’s only life. Who cares? It’s easy to take everything way too seriously.

  • “I need to make more money.”
  • “I need to get this promotion.”
  • “I need to buy a new car.”

Says who?

Also, do you get annoyed by everything? That’s not a good sign. In that case, you definitely should relax.

And realize that everyone is facing the same challenges. Life is not easy, you know. So don’t make it even harder by being such a serious person.

There you go. That’s my recipe for working hard and enjoying myself. I always remember that everything in life is only temporary. And if I don’t like my life, I change it.

What do I have to lose? Money? Reputation? Screw that. I don’t need it. You can always start over. What was that again? The journey is the reward? Yes.

Leave The Office On Time and Don’t Take Your Work Home

These two lessons are true for every person who wants a long, happy, and satisfying career.

But it’s very hard to put that advice into practice. It took me the first six years of my career to figure that out. And I still have to remind myself that life is bigger than work.

Almost everywhere that I’ve worked in the past, there was a “perception is reality” culture.

That means looks are more important than reality. In other words: The person who’s in the office the longest appears to be the hardest worker. Now, that may be true.

But that’s not what matters. We all know that the only thing that counts is results. However, we collectively insist on looking at vanity factors like participation in meetings, hours spent at the office, and how fast people respond to emails.

It’s pathetic. At our family business, we encourage everyone to leave when they are done for the day. We’ve learned that focusing on priorities is a much better metric than only looking at the hour’s someone works.

And still, people find it uncomfortable to say, “I’ve finished my top priorities, I’m going home.” I get it. When you work in a group, you don’t want to make others feel bad or that things are unfair.

But think about why you’re working in the first place. You’re there to contribute. To your own company, or the company you work for.

Working Too Long Is Unproductive

Now, I’m sure people love to be in your presence for 10 hours a day, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick around so long that you become unproductive. Because that’s one of the main reasons we’ve stopped working standard 9 or 10 hour days. It’s useless.

There’s a large body of research that proves working long hours is counterproductive.

Working too much and the stress that goes along with it can lead to depression, sleep problems, impaired memory, and even heart disease.

You get the idea. That’s why my first rule of work is this:

Leave On Time

The other day I was talking to my mentor about how great it is to love your job. He said: “I’ve never had a job in my life that I didn’t love. It’s one of the most gratifying things in life.”

But like my mother always says, “too much of a good thing becomes bad.” I believe that’s the same with work. Now, I’m not talking about intensity.

Don’t get me wrong, I work my ass off. Always have done. But just don’t go on for too long.

The art of working hard is knowing when to quit. But like my mentor told me, that’s very hard: “My biggest problem was that I worked too much. I left the house at 7 AM and came back at 11 PM. That’s too much.”

You must protect yourself against too much work.

And it’s straightforward. Just leave the office on time.

Whether you love your job or not — it doesn’t matter. When it’s time to go home, GO!

No one needs you to be at the office 24/7. Only your ego does. Honestly, the office will be here tomorrow. Your co-workers will still be alive. Your company will not go bust.

Work is about achieving results. If you can’t do that in 6–8 hours a day, you’re not effective. So instead of working overtime, read a book on personal effectiveness or get productivity training.

Leave Your Work At Work

But don’t just go home and bring your work with you. That defeats the whole purpose.

No one thinks it’s cool when you’re closing deals on the phone at dinner. You’re also not doing yourself a service by continually thinking about work when you’re at home.

Relax a bit. Play some Call of Duty. Cook dinner for your spouse. Take the kids for a walk. Whatever.

Look, living a happy life is very simple. It’s all within our control. We can decide what makes us happy. I have printed this Marcus Aurelius quote on my journal to remind me of that:

“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.”

We all know that money, success, fame, or recognition, by themselves, don’t make us happy. And yet, we work too much to obtain those things that don’t even make us happy in the first place.

So why do we keep working too much that it hurts us?

It could be our ego. Maybe we just can’t help ourselves. It’s different for every person. Personally, I don’t care about the reason. All I know is that too much work has a negative impact on the quality of your life and work.

What matters is that we protect ourselves from our own stupidity. We’re just like kids. We need rules to live happily and safely.

That’s why the first rule of work is that we leave the office on time. The second rule is that we don’t take our work home.

And the third rule? Let’s not worry about that for now. We’ll get to that another time. It’s time for me to go home.

MOVIE REVIEW – INTERN

Workplace Stress:

Weekends are the most exciting days of our lives. We feel exhausted working straight for a week and crave for the weekends. People of the age group 20-30 are more likely to face stress at their workplace. In a survey conducted in the US, it is proved that around 83% of people in the US are stressed because of their work. The same situation prevails all over the world. There are many reasons responsible for this stress. Some of the major reasons are as follows:

  • Paths are not chosen, but force-fed: People are captivated by luxury nowadays. Hence they fail to think about their strength, passion, and will while choosing a career. They identify the jobs which pay enough to satisfy their demands and run behind them. Anything which is not started with an interest will have enormous hurdles to pass through.
  • Market: The competition in the market is increasing at a tremendous rate and hence the companies have to accelerate to stay in the market. This pressure will eventually fall on the employees.
  • Success without struggles: Current generation is so obsessed with success and they forget the steps which must be followed to achieve them. They expect a huge success rate in a shorter span of time.

Plot :

“Age is no barrier. It’s the limitation you put on your mind” – Jackie Joyner

When I saw the movie image on an OTT platform I guessed that it would be a story of a young woman who is an intern in an esteemed organization. When I watched the movie, I was quite surprised to know that the man who stood behind her was the actual Intern. This clearly proves the way we guess people according to their age. Ben, a 70-year-old man post his retirement is feeling restless staying alone at his home. He tries every possible way to keep him engaged. But all in vain. One day he comes across an advertisement in which a clothing company has launched a senior internship program. He decides to give it a try.

Jules an young and super enthusiastic entrepreneur runs all her day to gain a balance between work and her personal life. She does multi-tasking most of the time and expects the people around her to be as energetic as her. She is unaware of the senior intern advertisement the company has posted and is shocked to know that a 70-year old man will work under her. Initially, she avoids him and tries to shift him to another department but eventually, they get to know each other and Ben guides her in all possible ways. The movie is well-detailed and brings out the layers of the leads in a beautiful manner. Watch the movie to understand how enthusiasm and experience found their ways to mend up their relationship and thus make their lives better.

How To Get A Job Without Prior Experience

Here’s the challenge everyone who starts their career faces: You can’t get a job because you don’t have prior experience, but you can’t get experience without getting a job.

It’s called the experience paradox or Catch-22 of getting a job. It’s a real challenge. And if you can’t overcome it, you can easily set your career 3 to 5 years back.

Worse, I’ve seen young folks and people who switch careers destroy their potential by making the wrong decisions early on.

I don’t want to scare you. You can still overcome the Catch-22; but not with conventional career advice. Because what’s the standard advice for people who want to build a career?

“Create a resume, browse job boards, and respond to job applications.” Sorry to disappoint you. If you take that route, you will end up like most people: Frustrated and underpaid.

Don’t worry, there’s a different way. With the right strategy, you can break into any industry and earn what you’re worth.

But I have to warn you. It takes at least twice as much work. However, that shouldn’t be a surprise to you. If you want to have a better career than most folks, guess what; you have to BE better than most folks.

When you do the following 2 things, you will become better—that will significantly increase your odds of getting a job without prior experience.

1. Be The Person You Would Hire

Why is it that companies prefer to hire experienced people for a role? When I started my career, I didn’t understand it.

The reality is that there’s a massive difference between someone who doesn’t have experience at a particular job and someone who has two years under their belt.

Even though two years might not sound like a lot of time, it’s actually a lot of time to learn the ins and outs of a job. And especially when you recently got out of college; because your first two to three years are all about learning to be a professional.

Some people never become serious about their careers. They wake up at a time so they can come to the office just in time. They prefer to sleep in. And they are the first to leave at 5 pm. They don’t ask questions, don’t seek out mentors, LOVE their lunch break, and chit-chat with their co-workers every chance they get.

Imagine you would be the CEO of a company. Would you want a person like that on your team? Of course not.

I must be honest; I used to be like that too. But I realized that attitude will not bring you far. If you want career success, you need to take it seriously. You only get rewarded for results. And what brings results? Skills.

Now, the good news is that increasingly more companies are putting emphasis on the skills of the people they want to hire—not their experience.

In his book, The Virgin Way, I read that Richard Branson, the famous founder of Virgin (that employs approximately 71,000 people), hires for character and skills. He prefers to actually get to know applicants instead of asking them a bunch of boring questions.

If you seek out companies who hire for experience and skills, you have a good chance of getting hired—even if you don’t have experience.

There’s only one condition: You must be a person YOU would hire. Someone who’s not only a professional but also has the skills to do a good job. If you feel like your skills are not that good yet, spend more time on your craft.

So how do you find a company that hires for skills and character? You ask.

Look, getting a job is NOT easy. It requires a lot of manual labor. Sometimes you need to reach out to hundreds of people to even get an interview. So that’s what you do. Be ready to do whatever it takes.

You reach out to people in HR of companies you’d like to work for. And you ask them about their interview process. How does the application process work? What are the characteristics you’re looking for in candidates?

You can use that information to apply for jobs you’re interested in. But unlike people who blindly apply, you know what they are looking for.

2. Do Free Work

Often, being good at your job and having information about the application process won’t cut it.

I’m a big fan of demonstrating your skills instead of talking about it. During the interview, we only talk. But when you offer to do free work for a company, you actually demonstrate your skills in a real-life setting.

So how can you do free work? Larry Stybel, a clinical psychologist, wrote an article for HBR about his experience launching his career. He shares 3 great tips:

  1. Look for a company you’d love to work for and then be specific about what value you will provide—What will you exactly do for the company? No need to overpromise. It’s better, to be honest about what you can. Identify a person you want to work for, and reach out to them directly. Also, send your resume along (watch my video on how to create a graphic resume with Canva for tips).
  2. Be specific about what value you will receive—Start with the end in mind. What do you want to get out of it? A reference? A potential job? Experience?
  3. Be specific about the time frame—You don’t want to keep working for free forever. In Stybel’s example, he said: “I promised to work two days a week for two months.” Often, you can’t even work full-time for free. Nor is it something I recommend. Use your time to keep searching for a job.

One of the key lessons for everyone launching their career is to consider yourself as a learning machine. When you feel too proud to learn or work for free, you will be stuck sooner than later.

But when you keep improving yourself and reaching out to people in the industry you want to work in, it will ultimately lead to a real job.

Biography: Lord Buddha

“Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart soul to it”-Lord Goutam Buddha

Lord Goutam Buddha was a spiritual preacher from ancient India who founded Buddhism. The time of birth and death of buddha is uncertain. However, most of the historians believe his lifetime to 563BC to 483BC. He was born at Lumbini in kapilavastu (now Nepal). His Father was king Suddhodana and queen Maha Maya (Mahadevi). His infant name was Siddhartha and family name goutama. His mother died at his birth and he was brought up by his mother’s sister Maha Prajapati. When he attained the age of 16 ,his father arranged his marriage to a cousin named yasodhara. He gave birth to a son named Rahula and spent 29 years as a prince in Kapilavastu. Although his father provided Siddhartha with everything he could want or need, he felt that material wealth was not life’s unlimited goal. At the age of 29 he left his palace for the life of a mendicant. Some days after being seated under a peepal tree Known as Bodi Tree in Bodh Gaya, India, he attained ‘Enlightment’ and there after he was known as Buddha or Awakened One to his Followers. He realised complete insight into the cause of suffering and steps necessary to eliminate it.

These discoveries became known as the ‘Four Nobel Truth’. And through these truths, a state of supreme liberation or ‘Nirvana’ is possible for any mortal being. He himself reached Parinirvana or the final deathless stage at the age of 80, according to the Buddhist Scripture.

Kindness

Kindness is an act of showing generosity, empathy, and friendliness towards others. A kind person always possesses positive energy towards them. One prominent trait about kind people is that they treat everyone the same. We often notice some selfish people who only try to please their superiors and treat other people with disrespect.

Kind people are always surrounded by people who love them. Their friendly and helpful nature is what attracts everyone towards them. They are also very compassionate, emphatic, and sympathetic. They not just listen and understand the issues people face but they also try to help them.

Kindness is important in today’s World, where no one cares about each other. Everyone just lives for themselves without helping the people in their surroundings. We all wish to be kind, but then we think about how selfish everyone is, and that no one cares about us. This should motivate us to be kind because we don’t like how people are mean and selfish. So, we need to be kind so others don’t feel this way.

Imagine this situation, a person mistreated their waiter and made them feel low. Now, the waiter comes to serve you. If you empathize with them and make them feel good about the situation, they will always remember your act of kindness.

Even small acts of kindness given below help create a positive change in someone’s life.

  • Treating people equally
  • Helping the animals in need
  • Listening to people’s issues and empathising with them
  • Making someone feel better on a bad day
  • Not being rude to people
  • Forgiving people
  • Being a helping hand to people
  • Giving honest compliments
  • Being polite and not using harsh language

All these acts mean a lot to the people we are kind towards. Whenever we do something kind, we always feel good inside. It makes us happy. In the same way, we love meeting people who are kind and friendly. No one likes meeting selfish people who only care about themselves.

I still remember the acts of kindness people showed towards me. Once when I had to recharge my metro card, I was short of a coin or two I think I dropped it on the way. But, this kind lady standing in line paid for me. I asked her to take the money I have but she refused and went by. Now, this may obviously seem like a small thing to her, but I will always remember her act of kindness.

In the World of cruel, inconsiderate, and selfish people even small acts of kindness like opening a door for someone or helping someone pick the groceries mean a lot to the person we helped. Giving food to the needy or feeding the dogs on the streets are all things we need to do in our daily lives. We cannot just die living for ourselves. If we have the money and the resources that could help the people around us, we need to do it. Street animals do not have a job that would provide them food. We as human beings have built buildings and roads everywhere and took away nature from animals. It is our duty to give them food, water, and shelter.

Acts of kindness do not make a person small. It only makes them look bigger. People will always appreciate you for your kind behavior. I hope you are now going to help make the World a better place to live in where we treat everyone with love and compassion.

Iceberg Melltdown

Scientists who assess the planet’s health see indisputable evidence that Earth has been getting warm in some cases rapidly. Many believe that human activity, especially the burning of fossil fuels and the resulting collection of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, have caused this warming trend. In the last decade scientists have documented record-breaking average annual surface temperatures and have observed other signs of change all over the planet: in the distribution of ice and temperatures of the oceans.

Ice is changing everywhere on the Earth. The famous snows of Kilimanjaro have melted more than 85 percent since 1911. Glaciers in the Indian Himalayas are retreating so fast that researchers fear that most central and eastern Himalayan glaciers could actually disappear by 2035. Arctic sea ice has thinned so much over the past half century, and its extent has declined by about 10 percent in the past 30 years. NASA’s repeated laser altimeter readings show the edges of Greenland’s ice sheet shrinking continuously. Freshwater ice breakup in the Northern Hemisphere now occurs nine days earlier than it did 150 years ago, and autumn freeze-up ten days later. When temperatures rise and ice melts from the icebergs, more water flows to the seas from glaciers and ice caps, and ocean water eventually warms and expands in volume. This combination of effects is the most important factor in raising average global sea level between ten and twenty centimeters in the past hundred years, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

There are absolutely no words to describe how much, and how fast, the ice is changing. Researchers predicted long ago that the most visible impacts from a globally warmer world would occur first at higher latitudes: rising sea temperatures air, earlier snowmelt, later ice freeze-up, reduction in sea ice, worse erosion, increase in storm intensity. All these impacts have been documented in Alaska. “The changes observed here provide an early warning system for the rest of the planet,” says Amanda Lynch, an Australian researcher who is the chief investigator on a project that works with Barrow’s residents to help them implement scientific data into management decisions for the city’s infrastructure.

Ian Hall, also of Cardiff University, who co-directed the scientific expedition, indicates that the results can contribute to understand how the Earth’s climate will respond to anthropic changes. Similarly, Jiménez Espejo, noted that last year, during an expedition aboard Hespérides, the French Navy research vessel, they were able to observe the various huge icebergs that had just broken into several pieces next to the islands of South Georgia. Ocean warming may cause the trajectories and the melt patterns of these large icebergs to change in the future, in a way affecting the currents and, therefore, our climate and the reliabilty of the models that scientists can use to predict it.

Nazca Lines

What Are the Nazca Lines?

There are three basic types of Nazca Lines: straight lines, geometric designs and pictorial representations.

There are more than 800 straight lines on the coastal plain, some of which are 30 miles (48 km) long. Additionally, there are over 300 geometric designs, which include basic shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids, as well as spirals, arrows, zig-zags and wavy lines.

The Nazca Lines are perhaps best known for the representations of about 70 animals and plants, some of which measure up to 1,200 feet (370 meters) long. Examples include a spider, hummingbird, cactus plant, monkey, whale, llama, duck, flower, tree, lizard and dog. The Nazca people also created other forms, such as a humanoid figure (nicknamed “The Astronaut”), hands and some unidentifiable depictions.

How the Nazca Lines Were Created

Anthropologists believe the Nazca culture, which began around 100 B.C. and flourished from A.D. 1 to 700, created the majority of the Nazca Lines. The Chavin and Paracas cultures, which predate the Nazca, may have also created some of the geoglyphs.

The Nazca Lines are located in the desert plains of the Rio Grande de Nasca river basin, an archaeological site that spans more than 75,000 hectares and is one of the driest places on Earth.

The desert floor is covered in a layer of iron oxide-coated pebbles of a deep rust color. The ancient peoples created their designs by removing the top 12 to 15 inches of rock, revealing the lighter-colored sand below. They likely began with small-scale models and carefully increased the models’ proportions to create the large designs.

Purpose of the Nazca Lines

More recent research suggested that the Nazca Lines’ purpose was related to water, a valuable commodity in the arid lands of the Peruvian coastal plain. The geoglyphs weren’t used as an irrigation system or a guide to find water, but rather as part of a ritual to the gods—an effort to bring much-needed rain.

Some scholars point to the animal depictions—some of which are symbols for rain, water or fertility and have been found at other ancient Peruvian sites and on pottery—as evidence of this theory.

In 2015, researchers presenting at the 80th annual meeting of the Society for American Archeology argued that the purpose of the Nazca Lines changed over time. Initially, pilgrims heading to Peruvian temple complexes used the geoglyphs as ritual processional routes. Later groups, as part of a religious rite, smashed ceramic pots on the ground at the point of intersection between lines.
