NYAY- CAN IT ELIMINATE POVERTY?

The Nyuntam Aay Yojana is a social welfare program that was a proposed by the Indian National Congress in its 2019 general election manifesto. According to The economic times NYAY is “yet another welfare program for India, but one that is between promising the moon and simply loony”.

Under this scheme, bottom 20% poorest families who are earning less than Rupees 12,000 per month will get Rupees 6000 per month directly transferred to their bank accounts.

NYAY promises annual income transfers of ₹72,000 to each of the poorest five crore families comprising approximately 25 crore individuals. If implemented, it will cost the exchequer ₹3.6 lakh crore per annum.

UPSIDE:

  • It helps poor people in providing nutrition and education.
  • It follows direct cash transfer which eliminates fake beneficiaries.
  • The money will be transferred to the women of the family which will in turn help in empowering women.

LOOPHOLES:

  • Spending money on development is much more effective than giving out cash directly.
  • Inflation may rise.
  • This scheme should not be as a permanent scheme. If it is, the whole purpose of eliminating poverty will be defeated.
  • There is no incentive to work. And hence NYAY can make people lazy and may stop them looking for work.

If it is targeted well, and if leakages are avoided, NYAY can bring at least a few people out of poverty. There are more issues that remain unanswered.

Well there isn’t a definite answer weather it can end poverty or not, but it is in the hands of every individual to kick poverty out of our country as well as the whole world.

Poverty is not like cancer where every cell must be removed or will come back. Whereas we can consider it like , being overweight or obese. The hard and slow process; victories are partial, sometimes you regress. But keeping up the fight you can definitely succeed. So just working towards poverty each and every day we can eventually overcome it.

EUTHANASIA:

Euthanasia refers to deliberate action taken with the intention of ending a life, in order to relieve persistent suffering. It is performed by doctors when requested by people to put and end to illness and a lo of pain.

In most countries, euthanasia is against the law and it may carry a jail sentence. For a long time now, euthanasia ha been controversial and emotive topic.

TYPES OF EUTHANASIA:

There are different types of euthanasia

  • Voluntary euthanasia:

It is conducted with the consent of the patient.

  • Non-Voluntary euthanasia:

It is conducted when the consent of the patient is not available.

  • Involuntary euthanasia:

It is conducted against the will of the patient.

  • Passive and active euthanasia:

Passive euthanasia entails the treatment necessary for the continuance of life. Active euthanasia entails the use of lethal substances and is more controversial.

CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING IT:

There are many arguments both for and against euthanasia.

Some believe euthanasia is murder and find it unacceptable for moral reasons. Some argue that it is legal if someone is mentally capable of making their choice.

“Death with dignity” is a movement that encourages legislatures to allow people to decide how they want to die. Some people prefer not to go through a lot of pain while dying and often it concerns on not putting burden on their loved ones which is what exactly this movement defines.

It is also concerned about the ethical complications that doctors could face. Long back doctors have taken the Hippocratic oath which implies to care for and never harm those under their care. As a result most doctors never encourage euthanasia. But even in that Hippocratic oath some argue that it ends suffering and brings no more harm and hence euthanasia is totally acceptable.

IS EUTHANASIA LEGAL?

Well there are lot of debate going about the legality of euthanasia. But according to laws, euthanasia is legal in

  • Belgium,
  • Canada,
  • Luxembourg,
  • Netherlands,
  • New Zealand,
  • Spain and
  • several states of Australia.

Whereas in INDIA passive euthanasia is legal under strict guidelines. Patients must consent through a living will, and must be either terminally ill or in a vegetative state.

There is no particular conclusion in this case as the debate is still ongoing and one cannot come to a conclusion whether euthanasia is necessary or not. It it always in the individual and it is also a matter of choice.

IOT (INTERNET OF THINGS)

The Internet of things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies that is used for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the internet.

One such example is smart phone. Without even human intervention it is possible to access things through IOT. It can easily transfer data over a network through Internet Protocol (IP) address.

HOW IT WORKS?

IOT is a web-enabled smart devices that use embedded systems to collect, send and act on data they receive. They collect it through an IOT gateway. They can also communicate with other related devices. The device does not need human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. It also uses artificial intelligence to collect data .

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

In such a hectic and busy world IOT helps people by simplifying their lives. It provides businesses with a real-time look and offers smart devices to automate homes. It helps individual to gain complete control of their lives.

BENEFITS OF IOT:

IOT provides multiple benefits in business and multiple industries. Some include

  • Helps make  better business decisions.
  • Saves time and money.
  • Helps generate more revenue.
  • It cuts down on waste and improves service delivery.
  • Easy accessibility.

CONS OF IOT:

Every coin has 2 sides. Likewise, it also comes with its own disadvantages.

  • If there’s a bug in the system, the device gets corrupted.
  • When the number of connected devices increases then the potential that a hacker could steal information also increases.
  •  It’s difficult for devices from different manufacturers to communicate with each other

In this weird world where humans have no time for themselves, IOT place an important role in millions of people’s life. A new era has now entered our lives where a man is a slave of technology which is ironically developed the for making human’s work simpler and that’s what IOT exactly does.

CAUSES:

While there are so many reasons associated with it the main reason of it being

  • Lack of being about the consequences.
  • Lack of action taken by police and judicial system makes the mob take the right on their hand and us it accoring to their will.
  • Many mob lynching incidents occur because of cow vigilantism.
  • Indirect support from government is another reason why still lynching exists.

HOW TO OVERCOME?

As of 2017, several people started protesting against mob lynching’s. Many movements started which also included “Not in my name” movement. Other movement named MASUKA (Manav Suraksha Kanoon) also started in 2017 to show protest against mob lynching. Later on 2018, Indian government appointed two committees to draft law on Mob lynching’s.

But, all these aren’t enough to overcome the mob lynching happening around the world. As individuals one should come forward and rise their voice against the injustice happening to their fellow brotherman.

SECTION 304:

If a mob killed some person, it will not be called a murder. It literally means if a single person kills someone, he’ll be liable for murder, but if the same crime is committed by a mob, the people be convicted under Section 304.

Section 304 – Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If an individual commits culpable homicide not amounting to murder, then he shall be punished with 1 or imprisonment which may extend to ten years and shall also be liable to fine.

Humanity is tested every time an unruly mob kills an innocent person. Whatever the reason is, crime is a crime and it is in the hands of each and every individual to differentiate what’s right and what’s wrong and act accordingly.

IS PAPERLESS OFFICE A REALITY OR NOT?

While going completely paperless might not be a reality as of now, but the changes that comes with the modern office are encouraging companies to do so.

PAPERLESS OFFICE:

A paperless office is a work environment in which the use of paper is eliminated or greatly reduced. it is done by converting paper and other documents into digital form. It is a workplace that has minimal paper-based processes.

BENEFITS OF PAPERLESS OFFICE:

There are many perks of paperless office. Some include

  • Strengthened Document Security & Confidentiality
  • It has easy access to data.
  • Eliminating paper work helps you save money spent on printing and storing documents.
  • Less paper waste means decreased carbon footprint.
  • Adhere to Audit Guideliness.

DISADVANTAGES OF PAPERLESS OFFICE:

As the proverb goes “A coin has 2 sides” likewise paperless office also has its own disadvantages

  • Software Maintenance is a huge problem.
  • Legal and Compliance Issues arises.
  • Difficulties in Digitalizing Existing Documents.
  • Security Risks and Viruses.

WHICH IS BETTER?

In case of paper office, paper documentation simply looks more professional. Paper office is that it doesn’t cost a whole lot of money and its much cheaper. Ultimately, it’s much easier to conduct business with a paper-filled office. In paperless office the amount of clutter that can be reduced. Sending big documents and leaflets to business clients can be done at the click of a button. Documents that may have been misplaced or lost entirely can be found with a quick search of the hard drive. Therefore both has its own side of story. To conclude which one is better is still a debate and also a matter of choice.

PAPERLESS OFFICE A REALITY OR NOT?

In this pandemic, paperless seems more likely and imperative. However road to a fully paperless office seems like a long one as of now but it is definitely possible in near future.

FAD DIETS

There is no single definition of what FAD DIET is. A fad diet is a diet that becomes popular for a short time, similar to fads in fashion, without being a standard dietary recommendation, and often making unreasonable claims for fast weight loss or health improvements. It is also called as “popular diet” or “diet cult”.

Some of the fad diet involve eliminating necessary nutrients that your body needs. While other involve eliminating dairy. Some eliminate certain foods at specific times of the day. It consists of unusual, expensive and unnecessary food products and ingredients. Fad diets are often highly restrictive. Often these diets aren’t well researched.

TYPES OF FAD DIET:

  • THE PALEO DIET:

It revolves around the food that our ancestors are thought to have hunted. It emphasizes on natural and not processed foods which involves meat, poultry, seafood, fruit, vegetables and nuts.

  • THE FLEITARIAN DIET:

A flexitarian follow a plant based diet but occasional eats meat when the heart urges.

  • KETOGENIC DIET:

It is a low carb, moderate protein, very high fat diet plan which involves cutting out key food groups. Some people have a medical need for a ketogenic diet to control epilepsy or other long-term conditions.

  • THE RAW FOOD DIET:

This involves consuming unprocessed plant-based foods in their raw state to retain the enzymes and vitamins that can be destroyed through cooking.

PROS OF FAD DIET:

  • It is effective in losing weight. As per research done by scientists from Tufts-New England Medical Center, fad diets can lead to a weight loss between 4.6 to 7.3 pounds within a year.
  • Fad diet comprises of plenty of fruits and vegetable in a range of meal plans.
  • Fad diet improves not only physical health but also one’s emotional health.

CONS OF FAD DIET:

  • Fad diet users lose weight very quickly. Losing weight healthy but if it happens too quickly, it may lead to various side effects.
  • It puts one’s health at risk as the amount of nutrients and calories to be consumed is restricted.
  • Fad diet have low adherence.

ONE COMMON THING ABOUT FAD DIET:

All fad diets have one thing in common: They propose a temporary solution for many people’s lifelong problem. Once the diet is stopped, the lost weight is usually regained quickly. Fad diets does not focus on lifestyle modification and these diets aren’t sustainable throughout ones life.

Even losing weight has to be done in the right way. The meal plans incorporated in fad diets are good. But, the goal of losing weight will be done better if it is combined with total lifestyle change.

DOPING IN SPORTS

Do athletes always abide to the “spirit of the sport”?. While most of them do, there are some who go against it and fall as a prey to some unethical and wicked act such as doping.

“Doping” refers to the use of prohibited medications, drugs, or treatments by athletes with the intension of improving the athlete’s performance. The idea of doping has been in practice by athlete’s centuries ago but recently its rate has been increased due to the wide variety of potential in upcoming athletes. It has found to be unethical and banned by most of the sports organization.

HISTORY:

Doping was first noted at the Olympic Games, in 1904, in a runner who was injected with strychnine to assist with speed and therefore giving him the strength to finish the race. It adverse outcomes and effects lead to the first ban on doping by the International Association of Athletics Federation in 1928.Later in 1967 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned doping, and in 1999 the IOC led the initiative to form the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

SUBSTANCES USED FOR DOPING:

Doping substances are used to increase muscle mass, decrease recovery time, increase energy and endurance, and also mask the presence of other drug. Some of the drugs used for doping are

  • ERYTHROPOIETIN (EPO)
  • SYNTHETIC OXYGEN CARRIERS
  • CERA
  • DIURETICS

WHY IS DOPING SUCH A BIG DEAL?

It is indeed a big deal because it has many substances that can be harmful and has a long lasting effects on health of the person who uses it. It can also put an individual’s life at risk. Doping leads to several issues in human health such as

  • Abnormal growth
  • Diabetes
  • Blood cancers
  • Arthritis
  • Enlarged heart and

In the worst case it also leads to premature death.

TESTING:

A urine and/or blood sample will be collected from an athlete. In case of urine sample, the athlete will collect the sample himself/herself. However, to ensure that the sample has been provided from the athlete’s body and that no other dishonest practice has been committed, a specialist of the same gender as the athlete will be present during the sample collection. These samples will be collected and tested to find out if any doping substances are used.

WADA and the IOC aim to decrease the incidence of doping and eliminate its use in sport. But its not all about it. Its also in the hands of the individual and the athletes taking part in sports and promise an oath to themselves not to involve in unethical and immoral activities that goes against the spirit of the game.

NOTE: In Tokyo Olympics 2020, INDIAN player MIRABAI CHANU stands chance to get gold if Chinese weightlifter fails in dope test.

CIVIC SENSE

However, humans are born with 6 sense but none are born with civic sense. Callousness and irresponsibility seem to be the order of the day. Its high time that we inculcate strong civic sense in your young generation.

CIVIC simply means social ethics. It reflects personality and responsibility of an individual and shows who the real person is. It is consideration by the people for the unspoken norms of society. Its not only about keeping roads or streets clean. Its more than that. It is abiding with the laws, respecting fellow human being and also maintaining a sort of decorum in the public.

But unfortunately, these days we lack basic civic sense. Modern lifestyle has given birth to different and uncivilized individuals who lack the basic moral behavior. The society is no longer etched with the goodness of people instead people are driven with their own selfishness and individual needs.

WHY CIVIC SENSE IS IMPORTANT?

If basic civic sense is absent in the society it leads to a lot of problems and to avoid these problems civic sense is necessary. It is important because people with high civic sense does not resort to unethical tactics and shortcuts. Civic sense leads to a more cleaner and fresh environment and also results in a high hygienic society. Civic sense leads you to be more social, mature and unbiased when it comes to situations in public.

LACK OF CIVIC SENSE LEADS TO?

Why is there a sense of detachment from the society? Why a person is always self centered? What are the factors that causes Separatism, vandalism, intolerance and racism? Why are people less tolerant now a days? The answer to all these questions are simple and its due to LACK OF CIVIC SENSE.

INCULCATE CIVIC SENSE:

Its high time that we inculcate civic sense. We can do so by inculcating young minds about the importance of civil sense at a very young age. Civic education should be made mandatory in school. One can also spread awareness about civic sense through rallies, educational programs, medias etc. Strict laws must be enforced. Penalties and stricter punishment’s should be considered if violated.

All these adds up to the society. If all these are followed properly and if people get to know the importance of civic sense then society will be a better place to live.

OUMUAMUA

Well we all know a lot about space but what is Oumuamua?

Oumuamua was the first known interstellar object that was detected passing solar system. It was discovered by Robert Weryk using Pan-STARRS1 telescope at University of Hawaii’s on Oct. 19, 2017. It was discovered more or less 40 days after it passes its closest point to the sun on September 9.

It appears to be rocky, cigar shaped object with reddish hue. It is estimated to be about 1,300 to 2,600 feet. Originally it was classified as comet C/2017 U1, but later reclassified as asteroid A/2017 U1 due to the absence of a coma. Oumuamua varies in brightness by a factor of 10 as it spins on its axis every 7.3 hours and also has a light curve amplitude of 2.5 magnitudes. It has a radius of about 200 m. It is estimated to be 10 times as long as it was width. However ʻOumuamua’s planetary system of origin and the age of its excursion are unknown.

As soon as it grabbed attention two things in particular fixated scientists. The first was its acceleration away from sun which was hard to resonate with many ideas. The second one was its peculiar shape.

HOW IT GOT ITS NAME?

It was initially named 1I/2017 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which was responsible for granting official names. But later  Pan-STARRS team dubbed it to Oumuamua, which in Hawaiian means “a messenger from afar arriving first”. It is pronounced as oh MOO-uh MOO-uh.

TRAJECTORY:

Astronomers were able to record its data only for a short period of time even though its been in our solar system for over decade. Oumuamua wasn’t spotted for a long time because it was too far from the Sun to reflect enough light for astronomers to pick it up. Once it got close enough to the Sun, it was moving fast, remaining for very little time in the relatively small region where it was visible to modern-day telescopes. Oumuamua was again on its way out. “Our very last observations from Hubble were January 2nd of 2018 at fainter than magnitude 27”, says Meech “By May 3rd, it was again outside of Jupiter’s orbit. And once it gets beyond about 1.2 AU or so, it’s 25th magnitude, so beyond Jupiter’s orbit, forget it. It’s gone”, he added. According to Meech, Oumuamua is expected to reach the Kuiper belt in about 2024, and pass the edge of the Kuiper belt in late 2025. It will pass the most distant location the Voyagers have reached, she says, in about 2038. By 2196, it will again be 1,000 AU from the Sun, although our Oort Cloud is projected to extend beyond 100,000 AU, so when Oumuamua truly passes the “edge” of the solar system depends on where you define that edge. Regardless, since January, ‘Oumuamua has been beyond astronomer’s reach.

HAVE ALIEN FOUND US?

Some astronomers even suggested that ʻOumuamua could be a product of alien technology. However evidences are not too strong. Therefore the alien object hypothesis is considered unlikely by many experts.

Apart from this, Borisov is another interstellar object that was found August 30.
