NASA girl trolled for her faith- peak of Hinduphobia

Humanity hit a new low when an Indian origin American girl was heavily trolled by netizens just because of her faith. NASA, in order to invite new interns tweeted an application showcasing the diverse nature of the organization. An Indian girl also featured in the tweet with Hindu idols in the background of her picture.

An innumerable number of trolls targeted the girl criticizing NASA for including such a “stereotypical” image of Indians according them. But is it okay to bash someone merely because they follow a particular faith or religion? The girl undoubtedly secured a place through her efforts and a futile, good for nothing crowd directly mocked her as a fake science-lover only because she believes in her Gods. If atheism was a criterion to get selected in any scientific organization then people should also nullify the work and contributions of Einstein, Newton and Darwin.

It is so shameful to read the tweets and realize how much hatred and Hinduphobia is prevalent in society. Some of the tweets read ‘She missed Lord Ganesha and 33 million other Gods’, ‘NASA and gods don’t mix. The Indian kid seems to have some kind of obsession with Gods’. Other tweets are too vile to read.

Another user very accurately pointed out “All those mocking her: Hijab, polygamy, child marriages, Niqab, prayers on road, etc. are supposed to be respected under the concept of ‘choice’ and ‘pluralism’ but a Hindu lady practicing her faith has to be ridiculed. Carry on! Your bigotry will make her faith stronger.”

It is indeed true that the case would have been very contrasting only if the girl was wearing either hijab or had a Christ portrait in the background. However, irrespective of any religion or faith, no one should be criticked or targeted just because they are proud of their roots.

INTEGRATING YOUTH TOWARDS SCIENCE

There is a fountain of youth. It is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of the people you love.” – Sophia Loren.

Youth is the spring of human life. This is the phase of life where we live with our dreams and discoveries. Youth is the greatest strength and wealth of any nation. Empowering youth leads to nation pride.

The primitive humans were driven by instinct, just like animals. As we evolved, the faculty of intellect and higher thoughts developed in our brain. We started conditioning nature rather than obeying it. We developed rational thinking and understood the way we can support our thoughts with empirical data. We learned to make hypothesises and test them. We discovered science, as a faculty of knowledge and applied it meticulously and thus started dominating the world. A single example is how we made fire by friction, then came the match box and now sleek lighters. Today we have understood the science of nuclear energy so deeply that we have the power to even turn a big city into ashes within seconds.

Albert Einstein once said: “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible”. The comprehensibility of world comes through understanding science.

For couple of decades, we saw a trend that the youth of India was mesmerised to opt for Engineering or Medicine naturally due to career prospects. However due to various initiatives and funding for science research of-late we are seeing a trend that the present-day youth started preferring science as a career. Science research is no doubt time consuming and quick result and career is not easy to achieve.

Progress is the result of self-sacrifice not self-interest. There are many good and sincere scientists in India whose interests are not motivated by awards and recognition. These people have served and will continue to serve as mentors to future generations of Indian scientists. Science is the result of the efforts of these people. Let each one of us act as a catalyst to the advancement of science in India which will certainly make our country very powerful among the other nations in the world.

To conclude, youth are the backbone of our nation. They are full of energy. They should channel their energies for constructive purposes, develop scientific temper and thus bring their own progress and on turn the progress and prosperity of our nation.

Not Fair But Still Lovely

India’s obsession to fair skin is not new. Fairness does not define beauty and racism harms everybody. Colourism is the bias against dark skinned tone that views white skin as the ultimate benchmark. It is a persistent social force in India, and many South Asian countries.

George Floyd’s killing in police custody in U.S has led to the ‘Black lives matter’ across the globe. Undoubtedly, there is power in protest. But the question lies when we think, does this really bring a change and do people really mean it. The protests happening through social media has advantages as well as disadvantages. According to many, the notion of beauty lies in skin colour which is absolutely wrong.

‘Fair and lovely’ has been criticized for years as they promote the idea of being fair to be an achiever. Chandana Hirana, a 22-year-old, Mumbai girl started a petition against the brand before the name was changed to ‘Glow and lovely’. Changing the brand’s name turned out to be an utter failure as there is no change in ingredients. Also, Loreal and many other brands are also removing words like ‘whitening’ or ‘fair’ from their products. Sure, it is a welcome move but it is a high time to ban the prevailing mindset of people that equate fair skin not just to beauty but also to rich and upper caste.

As anti-racism protest erupted across the globe, many celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Disha Patani, Yami Gautham etc came forward in support of ‘Black lives matter’ who were latter trolled massively as they were already promoting fairness products. Priyanka Chopra in an interview said that she regretted promoting such products.

Last year, Nandita Das, founder of Dark is beautiful campaign did a rap video to fight skin-tone discrimination. She also added that she is fed up of people commenting on her skin tone. Hassan Minhaj, an American comedian on his popular show ‘Patriot act’ on Netflix said that ‘it is bad to be black in Desi culture’ and I couldn’t agree more. We shouldn’t assume a particular race to be superior than others. Even filters and photo editing apps are focussing now how to make you fairer.

Matrimonial ads are the best example to see how things are uglier in the world. People search for wheatish skin girls. It is surprising to know that most of the matrimony sites have filter option to select the skin tone.

In ‘my experiments with truth’ Gandhiji tells how he was embarrassed because of his dark skin tone against white skinned people around him. Even after Britishers have left India, racism still exist here. We should learn that all shades are lovely. We are all in different shades for many reasons. Embrace your shade instead of hating it. Let us not give space for racism to exist in our mind. No shade is superior or inferior than any shade. It is of no doubt that racism will take a mental toll on people. Stop racism. Nothing more, nothing less.

To be sure, i’m not saying that college is waste of time and money for everyone. Of course it is, but having a so much resources available around everywhere where we can access in a bit of seconds, it will be more better option than a college degree.

But one thing can: The fastest-growing segment of the workforce — freelancers — have realized more than most that education doesn’t stop. It’s a lifelong process. Diploma or not, it’s a mindset worth embracing.

CORONAVIRUS AND ITS IMPACT ON EDUCATION

The COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019. The global outbreak of COVID-19 is still ongoing.

The current coronavirus pandemic is having a perplexing impact, not only on people’s health, but also on how they learn and work. The pandemic has introduced uncertainty into major aspects of society, including the education sector. Thousands of schools, colleges and other educational institutions are closed nationwide. This situation challenged the education system across the globe and forced institutions to shift to an online mode of teaching.

Challenges of Online education

Schools and colleges have been impacted significantly by the rapid spread of the COVID-19 outbreak. Closures have pushed countries towards a modernized, digital style of teaching. However, this solution comes with its own unique set of challenges. Among the most important challenges created by the coronavirus is how to adapt to a system of online education.

There are various technological devices available for online education but sometimes they create a lot of problems. These difficulties and problems associated with modern technology range from downloading errors, installation issues , login problems, poor connectivity, etc. Sometimes student also finds online teaching to be boring. Students want face to face interaction which is not possible with online mode of learning

Universities across the globe have adjusted their courses in response to the spread of the coronavirus. Moving all the educational programs online may prove very challenging. While some universities or schools may already have strong online systems, smaller universities may struggle with the technology. Some students also don’t have reliable internet access or technology and they struggle to participate in online learning. This gap is seen across countries and between income brackets within countries.

Advantages of Online Learning

  • More flexible than offline classes.
  • Saves time by avoiding transportation.

Disadvantages of Online Learning

  • Loss of interest
  • Small children have low concentration power, and they don’t want to sit for a longer time in front of the blue screen.
  • The availability of internet to students living in rural areas.
  • Speed and cost of internet.
  • Spending long time in online learning makes the students lose their motivation to participate.
  • Lots of poor students do not have access to laptops, computers, tablets, cell phones, etc.
  • Less interactive.

Conclusion

The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown has affected the academic performance of most of the students with varying degrees. Online education helps the students with an opportunity for self-study. However many subjects need practical classes; therefore, it is not easy to understand all the subjects online. The learning process cannot reach its full potential until students practice what they learn. This may impact their career in the future.

The Bishnois of Rajasthan

Formation of the Bishnoi sect— India’s original environmentalists

Bishnoism originated in the 1485AD by Saint Guru Jambheshwar in theThar Desert of Rajasthan, India. Long before the world came to know about the environmental crises, Bishnois have been cognizant of man’s relationship with nature and the importance to maintain its delicate balance. It is remarkable that these issues were considered, half a century ago by Bishnoi visionaries. No other secthas given this level of importance to environment value, protection and care.

Not many of us know that the concept of Tree Huggers and Tree-Hugging, have roots within the Bishnoi community. The famous ‘Chipko Movement’ was inspired by a true story of a brave lady called Amrita Devi Bishnoi who refused to let the kingsmen cut the trees and sacrificed her life to save the trees.

Sundarlal Bahuguna

This sacrifice not only inspired the “Chipco Andoloan” by Sunder Lal Bahuguna but also the Indian government. The “Amrita Devi Bishnoi Smrithi Paryavaran Award” for contributing to environment conservation is given to those who have significantly contributed for environment conservation.

The Bishnois are one of the first organized communities that have collectively sought for eco-conservation, wildlife protection, and green living. The ideals and tenets of the bishnois and bishnoism mentioned in the 29 religious tenets are very crucial and relevant to our ever evolving world.

The social concern, in medieval Rajasthan, manifested itself in various forms. To unite the people for a common cause, Guru Jambheswar Ji advised 29 principles to become a Bishnoi. The word ‘Bishnoi’ stands for ‘bish’ which means 20 and ‘noi’ which means 9; derived from these 29 principles out of which 6 principles are dedicated to environmental protection and compassion for all living beings.

Of the 6 tenets that focus on protecting nature, the two most profound ones are:

Jeev Daya Palani – Be compassionate to all living beings.

Runkh Lila Nahi Ghave – Do not cut green trees.

Though these rules date back centuries, they still hold the morals and the beliefs for which the bishnois stand and are more than relevant to the environmental problems faced in today’s world.

Conservation as a practical necessity

In the arid and semi-arid regions of western Rajasthan, Bishnoism as a sect has over the ages has not only proposed, but also internalised their practices in an effort to usher in new practices of conservation ethics in Rajasthan. A majority of the Bishnoi rules suggested maintenance of harmony with the environment, like the prohibition on cutting green trees and animal slaughter. One plausible explanation is that the economy was primarily sustained by animal rearing. Hence, any slaughter, even during droughts, would have affected their means of livelihood.

Similarly, the cutting of green trees was prohibited, as it would scale back the availability of green fodder for the cattle, especially in the dry region where natural vegetation was very thin and sparse. Jambhoji’s teachings, which were in line with the interests of the folk, became immensely popular primarily in the arid regions of Bikaner and Jodhpur. The number of his followers increased manifold in these regions. His principles became so influential that the rulers of these states were forced to respect his teachings and sermons. The Bishnois have since long proposed for placing restrictions and punishments for cutting trees.

Rajasthan’s landscape demands dependence on agricultural and cattle-rearing practices. The conservation of natural vegetation of the region helped sustain superior breeds of cattle for export to other regions, exports such as sheep for wool, and camels for transport proved beneficial. Trade and commerce were also an important component of these economies as is evident in the nature of taxation where non-agricultural production was also taxed extensively (Kumar 2005).

Protection of wildlife and animals

The Bishnois consider the blackbucks as pavitra, or sacred. They follow what is perhaps the only environment-friendly religion in the world and recognise the rights of all kinds of birds, animals and trees and believe in living with peace and harmony with them. Reports show that in 2016, over 1,700 people who were involved in wildlife crimes in Rajasthan were arrested owing to the tireless efforts of the bishnoi community.

Some of their commandments mention to “provide shelters for abandoned animals to avoid them from being slaughtered in abattoirs,” making clear the Bishnoi’s reverence of all life on the planet.

The Khejarli massacre

Khejarli or Khejadli is a village situated in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, just 26 km southeast of the main city of Jodhpur. The name of the town is derived from khejri trees, which were in abundance in the village. In the year 1730 AD (Vardhan 2014), the king of Jodhpur sent-out his army to cut trees in order to build his palace. When his army started to cut down and log a Bishnoi forest, the bishnois organised a non-violent protest, offering their bodies as shields for the trees. The soldiers had warned that anyone intending to stand in their way would share the fate of Amrita (or Imarta/Imarti as she is often also referred to by the locals) and her three daughters who had taken the bold step of hugging trees following their mother’s action, and had been killed by the soldiers. Men, women and children from 83 different villages stepped forward, embraced the trees and sacrificed themselves one after the other.

The army’s axes had already slain 363 people, when the king, Maharaja Abhay Singh, hearing the whole incident and their perseverance and courage, halted the logging and declared the Khejarli region a preserve, issued a royal decree engraved on a tambra patra (a letter engraved on a copper plate), prohibiting the felling of trees and hunting in the Bishnoi areas. The Bishnois as well as non-Bishnois consider the tambra-patra declaration as a victory of the communities efforts at conservation.

Till date, the Bishnoi community commemorates and celebrates this collective sacrifice as a symbolic victory in Khejarli by maintaining the place as a heritage site. An annual fair is organised at the village near Jodhpur, which also maintains a functional temple. In 1988, the Government of India commemorated the massacre formally, by naming the Khejarli village as the first National Environmental Memorial (Clarke 1991). A cenotaph now stands at the site as a memorial to the Bishnoi lives lost at the massacre site, which is collectively maintained through community funding as well as by private donations.

Incidentally, Imarta Devi, the first woman who died in defence of the khejri trees during the 1730 Khejarli massacre, uttered her last words as follows: Sar sāntey rūkh rahe to bhī sasto jān (even if one were to get their head severed to save a tree, still it is a cheap bargain).

Mental Health Kit: a must for all

By Satyansh Pathak | 13 July, 2021

MENTAL HEALTH has been a topic of discussion for a long time ,but it has gathered more attention recently.

We all are aware of the fact that a healthy life is directly proportional to one’s mental health. It is extremely important for all to take care of their mental health and devote as much time as they can. Because the energy and time you invest in yourself will never go waste.

Necessity is the mother of invention. And in order to have a stable mental health, mental health kits were created so that people can take care of their mind and body.

Here are few things that one can store in his mental health kit -:
1. Perfumes – Smell is one of the most powerful senses. The fragrance of perfumes reduces stress. The fragrances evoke emotions.
2. A diary and a pen – This helps to express thoughts clearly and in a more effective way. Moreover, it can make you feel light and happy.
3. Chocolates(mostly homemade) – Dark chocolates are good for our health. The main ingredient, that is, Cocoa helps us to fight depression, improves heart health and enhances the mood.
4. Charcoal facewash – Since self care is directly proportional to mental health, it is important to keep a product like Charcoal facewash which releases toxins from skin and keeps skin healthy and fresh.
5. Fidget spinner – It will helps to stay concentrated and also to keep a person away from unnecessary gossips.
6. A Stuffed toy(Teddy bear) – All of us loves to hold fluffy stuffs  tightly and play with it when we’re tired. They can easily drag a person’s attention and can make feel lively.
7. Sleep mask – Sleeping eye mask has the potential to relieve all the stress and provides comfort while sleeping.

You can add whatever you want in your MENTAL HEALTH KIT. Remember to be kind to yourself and be kind to others.

Does anyone still believe in old school love?

When we read or listen to old love stories, we find that there were times when technology hadn’t suffocated the essence of love, the blue ticks didn’t exist, neither did facebook chats. Love was much more than putting up love struck captions for each other on our facebook display pictures or sending each other hearts and kisses on whatsapp. Lovers used to send each other letters from far off places, and the efforts they put into express their undying love was worth everything in the world.
Not to say that relationships today are shallow and ingenuine, but somewhere down the line we miss , infact we lost the so called “Old school love/romance.”

Does anyone still express their love through hand written letters, or social media had completely taken over the matter?

Does anyone still appreciate street food dates, or they only prefer famous restaurants?

Does anyone still gifts flowers and chocolates to their partners or giving expensive rings and gifts now seem better?

Does anyone still appreciate poetries, notes written expressing one’s feeling or Social media’s post now makes more meaning?

Does anyone still takes time to know each other before getting engaged or have complete faith that Tinder find the perfect match?

Does anyone still believe in old school love and romance, or the way of expressing love in our generation enhanced?

The Pandemic’s gift to Earth

By Satyansh Pathak | 13 July, 2021

The worldwide destruction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has helped the earth to cure and refine itself. The worldwide LOCKDOWN has resulted in the fall of  pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
While the people are not able to breathe properly as they could before the lockdown, nature is able to breathe more easily.
The closure of factories which  deteriorated the quality of air and water seems to be a true blessing to nature. Since dirty brown pollution belts and toxic effluents doesn’t exist anymore.
Dozens of other countries are now experiencing temporary falls in Carbon dioxide and Nitrogen dioxide emissions.
China was the first nation to experience lockdown due to massive spread of COVID-19. The Satellite images clearly depicts  the emissions of poisonous gases fading away  over China.
Significant falls in emissions and toxic gases can be observed in India, USA and France. Satellite images show Nitrogen dioxide emissions fading away over northern Italy. Scientists in Europe have noted that overall 2020 may still see a drop in global emissions of 0.3%.
With less human activities, the planet is able to beautify itself more and more. People can hear bird’s chirping, the quality of air has greatly ameliorated, the water bodies are now cleaner than ever and seismologists report “lower vibrations” from “cultural noise” than before the pandemic.
Indian Head Scientist Mr. Unnikrishnan said, “It is a reflection of what the earth might look like without fossil fuels”.
CLIMATE CHANGE is a major problem existing in the world. It can lead to gigantic demolition if the people all over the world didn’t handle it seriously.
Greta Thunberg has urged for “digital activism” to take the place of physical protests due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Since the earth is healing, there are several pages on social media encouraging the youth to take care of mother earth.
We shouldn’t go back to normal because normal was the problem. It is a bitter truth that we spend billions of dollars to find life on other planets…. And trillions of dollars killing the life on this one (EARTH).

Psychology as a career in India

By Satyansh Pathak | 13 July, 2021

Modern life is full of stress, expectations and so on. For many people stress and depression is so common that it has become a way of life. But the consequences can be hazardous. It can be life threatening and serious. Whenever our condition worsens then we ask doctors to help us and bring us back to normal. The same way when we are mentally unhealthy we visit a psychologist. Psychology is a vast subject and it has several opportunities to offer. Until and unless we are interested and looking for opportunities it doesn’t knock our door.
Since psychology is the study of human mind and behavior, it has numerous applications in all walks of life — work, family, relationships, sports, industries and in organizational spaces. We all should always choose a field as well as a career which interests us, make us feel confident and delighted. Psychology has numerous career opportunities. The following are – :
COUNSELLING (Counselling psychologists helps clients deal with personal and interpersonal problems that they face in daily life), SCHOOL and HEALTH COUNSELLORS help individuals in their
respective field, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY (This field deals with the diagnosis, understanding and treatment of psychological disorders), INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGISTS apply their knowledge and skills on workplace, DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY (a field dedicated to the study of how human beings develop over the course of their lifetime), FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY (a field which deals with sensitive issues and legal proceedings) and SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY (impacts the performance of athletes and sports teams by motivating them which eventually enhances their performance).

Thus we can say that PSYCHOLOGY HAS A BRIGHT CAREER in INDIA, a country of billion people. In the coming few years India as a nation would need a number of psychologists and mental health professionals to help people deal with
mental illnesses. The FUTURE has GREAT OPPORTUNITIES  for those who are willing to pursue PSYCHOLOGY as a subject.

The Israeli- Palestinian conflict is one of the world’s enduring conflicts, with the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip reaching 54 years of conflict. Various attempts have been made to resolve the conflict as part of the Israeli- Palestinian peace process. India has condemned the Israeli attack on Palestine territory describing it as crimes against humanity that should no longer take place in 21st century.

As state of conscience and advocates for universal human rights, India condemn the recent Israeli state-sponsored attacks against Palestinian life, land and property in Jerusalem and Gaza.

hindering any Human Rights of the people. India Considers Jerusalem as an international city under
the control of United Nations to protect and to preserve the unique spiritual and religious interests
located in the city ofthe three faiths, Christian, Jewish and Muslim to ensure that order and peace,
andespecially religious peace, reign in Jerusalem.

As a third world country, India affirms that Jerusalem is a sacred space and a holy city for the vast majority of the world’s population that follow the Abrahamic faith.
The Israeli state-sponsored attempts to evict and remove Palestinian residents from their ancestral and legally-owned homes in Jerusalem, specifically in the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. International law affirms that the forced eviction and home removal meted on Palestinians is categorically illegal and is viewed by the international community as one of the main deterrents in ending Israeli apartheid and settler colonialism.
