GREAT DEPRESSION

The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. Lasting from 1929 to 1939. It began after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors. Over the next several years consumer spending and investment dropped. Causing steep declines in industrial output and employment as failing companies laid off workers. By 1933, when the Great Depression reached its lowest point some 15 million Americans were unemployed and nearly half the country’s banks had failed.

Throughout the 1920s the U.S economy expanded rapidly and the nation’s total wealth more than doubled between 1920 and 1929 a period dubbed “the Roaring Twenties. The stock market centered at the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street in New York City, was the scene of reckless speculation, where everyone from millionaire tycoons to cooks and janitors poured their savings into stocks. As a result, the stock market underwent rapid expansion, reaching its peak in August 1929.

By then production had already declined and unemployment had risen leaving stock prices much higher than their actual value. Additionally, wages at that time were low, consumer debt was proliferating the agricultural sector of the economy was struggling due to drought and falling food prices and banks had an excess of large loans that could not be liquidated. The American economy entered a mild recession during the summer of 1929 as consumer spending slowed and unsold goods began to pile up which in turn slowed factory production. Nonetheless, stock prices continued to rise and by the fall of that year had reached stratospheric levels that could not be justified by expected future earnings.

Stock market crash of 1929

On October 24, 1929 as nervous investors began selling overpriced shares mass the stock market crash that some had feared happened at last. a record 12.9 million shares were traded that day known as “Black Thursday”. Five days later on October 29 or Black Tuesday some 16 million shares were traded after another wave of panic swept Wall strret. Millions of shares ended up worthless and those investors who had bought stocks “on margin” were wiped out completely. As consumer confidence vanished in the wake of the stock market crash the downturn in spending and investment led factories and other businesses to slow down production and begin firing their workers. For those who were lucky enough to remain employed wages fell and buying power decreased. Many Americans forced to buy on credit fell into debt and the number of foreclosures and repossessions climbed steadily. The global adherence to the gold standard which joined countries around the world in a fixed currency exchange, helped spread economic woes from the United States throughout the world especially Europe.

Great Depression end

The Great Depression was a worldwide economic depression that lasted 0 years. GDP during the Great Depression fell by half, limited economic movement. A combination of the New Deal and World War II lifted the U.S out of the Depression. Those war jobs seemingly took care of the 17 million unemployed in 1939. Most historians have therefore cited the massive spending during wartime as the event that ended the Great Depression.

Art Therapy

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” —Pablo Picasso

“Expressive art therapy integrates all of the arts in a safe, non-judgmental setting to facilitate personal growth and healing. To use the arts expressively means going into our inner realms to discover feelings and to express them through visual art, movement, sound, writing or drama. This process fosters release, self-understanding, insight, and awakens creativity and transpersonal states of consciousness.” -Natalie Rogers

Art therapy is a kind of therapy that uses art as a means of communication and le people explore and express their emotions and thoughts. This therapy is also known as expressive therapy.

In the process of the therapy arts, therapists use fine arts and performing arts to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Fine arts and performing arts include drawing, painting and drama, dance, and movements respectively to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In the process, the therapists work with individuals or groups using arts to create meaning rather than focusing on the end product. This process includes activities like creating stress painting, designing a postcard that one will never send, creating an emotional wheel, collage, doodling and scribbling, finger painting, photography, sculpting, working with clay, etc. Art therapy is more useful for people who cannot verbalize their feelings. This therapy is perfect for people of all ages because of its versatility.

Art therapy can help in treating a wide range of mental disorders and psychological distress.

Certain studies and institutions recommend art therapy for people suffering from schizophrenia (a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.) and other related conditions. People who face difficulties in learning, art therapy are great for them.

People suffering from Dementia (a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning). Due to art therapy, people use creative parts of their brain, which helps them to manage stress levels and restore a sense of personal identity.

People suffering from Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (a complex developmental condition that involves persistent challenges in social interaction, speech, and nonverbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviors). Art therapy helps people to distract and calm themselves and also improve their communication skills.

It also helps prisoners to help in their feelings. It can also be used for people suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Things to keep in your mind to participate in art therapy

•             People do not need to have artistic ability or special talent. According to some researchers sometimes only the presence of art can play a part in boosting mental health.

•             Art therapy is not the same as art classes. Art classes are focused on teaching techniques while art therapy is more about let people focus on their inner feelings. People do not need to create masterpieces in art therapy but they need to express their feelings with the help of color or anything they feel connected with.

•             People do not need to have experience in arts for participating in art therapy.

In this pandemic like situation people are facing issues like stress, depression and mental health more than ever. To get out of these situations people started to do yoga and many more things. So here is the suggestion you can start art therapy at your home. You just need to practice regularly to overcome the issues. Art therapies can help you open up emotions you have been pushing back. The therapy forces you to notice them and work on them. So start playing with colors or dance or sing in your own way and let yourself express what you feel.

Judicial integration with Artificial Intelligence-

Amalgamating artificial intelligence (AI) with indian courts has now become effective in decision making process, improving judicial efficiency, expedite processes and improving access to justice. This infact has become more vital amid pandemic.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is the machine intelligence, antithesis to natural intelligence possessed by humans and animals. It offers infinite possibilities to people. Machines mimic ‘human cognitive functions’ such as learning and problem solving. It is relevant to any intellectual task. Some examples of use of AI are autonomous vehicles, medical diagnosis, solving puzzles and problems, online assistants. Operation of AI, with regard to judiciary, has become another prominent feature now.

AI in Indian Judicial System-

Overburdened judiciary in India with few judges handling millions of trial cases is the salient characterstic of indian courts lead to delay in adjudication. Still many seats in courts are vacant. This not only slow down trial procedure but also drains energy and economic resources of people. AI can prove beneficial in this context. But before using AI in judiciary, it is important to identify the various legal procedure where the use of AI can prove remarkable.
Multiple realms where AI application can have a noteworthy impact are-
1. Augmenting decision making process which in turn help reduce case burdens in courts and fasten the processes. Indian courts have the highest number of cases pending before them.
2. Increase judiciary efficiency.
3. Creatively solving the legitimate issues.
4. Help judges to trial faster and more effectively.
5. Developing better legal reasoning, legal discussion and interpretation of laws.

Recent innovations-

Recently, SUPACE (Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Court Efficiency) was launched by Supreme Court of India. This portal helps in assisting the court in improving efficiency and reducing pendency.
Another portal SUVAS assist in translation of judgements into vernacular languages from English. This is an landmark effort to enhance the access to justice to weaker section. Now, Supreme court has become the global pacesetter in application of AI and Machine Learning into judiciary.

Challenges with AI-

Before applying such technology into Judicial system, it is important to identify the potential problems and challenges causes by AI.
• Privacy of individual is at risk.
Data protection
• Ethical issues like hacking.
• Virtual court proceedings through videoconferencing creating inequality by downsizing those who cannot use it.

Even though the use of AI is prevalent in various domains, but it is still in its nascent stage in judiciary. There is an apprehension that it may widen the gap between judiciary and weaker section, perhaps becoming a issue in equal justice. Hence it should not create new inequalities and deliver justice to all according to our constitution.

The Theatre Experience Vs the OTT Experience

2020 was a year that would be pinpointed in when the story of mankind is told in the future. Right from the Australian bushfires, to oil-spills, flash floods and cyclones. But the one disaster that shook the world into a standstill was the Corona Virus, or Covid-19.

Though the virus itself was formed in 2019, it spread worldwide only in 2020, and by late March – early April, it had succeeded in bringing the entire world to a standstill. And even as it is July 2021, many of the places that had closed down, haven’t opened back up. One such place being movie theatres.

Movie theatres were a prime spot to hangout among teenagers, a place to chill during the weekend for the working adults, and overall in general, a place that everyone looked forward to visit. In 2020, that closed down, and people were confined to their homes. No new content available for quite some time. People began missing the famous “theatre experience”. The big screen, the booming sounds, the chill room, just leaning back and enjoying a fun time with their friends or family. That shut down due to the pandemic.

But as the saying goes, as one door closes, another opens. The pandemic paved way for the Over the Top or OTT platforms, a feature that most parts of India were still not familiar with. The idea that you can watch movies that haven’t even released yet online was something new to the Indians. This was utilized well by the OTT platforms, who did the crucial task of keeping people entertained during the lockdown. The producers of the films were also happy as completed movies, which had to be shelved due to the pandemic could now be released online, and would no longer be a non performing asset for them.

OTT platforms managed to release new movies, and TV shows. In fact, filmmakers started making movies specifically for the OTT medium, as can be seen in movies like Joji or Sara’s. This meant that people could now stream quality content, from their nice and cozy living rooms, maybe even in their pajamas, saving them the trouble of even going to the theatres!

But all this raises the question, was 2020 the end of theatres? Would there be a revival of theatres? Chances are it is not. While OTT films can be viewed from the comforts of one’s homes, theatres stand for something greater than just movies. It’s not just confined to the fact that theatres give an optimum experience of the movies. There is a lot more to it. The interaction in movies, the discussions with your friends or family after the movies, mostly over lunch or dinner at a restaurant, and simply the vibe of going to the cinemas with them, and meeting them in person for something fun. These pleasures transcend the comfort that one gets while watching movies in an OTT forum.

This also does not mean that OTTs would also cease to exist once the theatres reopen. OTTs would still be preferred after a long day of work. All it means is that movies have now become more accessible to everyone, either through theatres or through OTT platforms!

WATER BODIES AREN’T BINS.

Would you value something, you would die without?

Well looking at the picture above I think, Indians doesn’t seem to be having this thinking. Such disregard of Water, the thing which makes our life possible definitely has to be one of the most irresponsible thing done by humans. Especially, Indians who worship these seas and rivers themselves are the one’s polluting it the most. The holy river of GANGES, which is generally called the most pure river in the whole country itself is the most polluted one. Severly polluted Ganges river which provides water to 40% of India’s population in total of 11 states serving an estimated population of 500 million people, is the fifth most polluted river in the WORLD. Sewage discharge from cities, towns and some villages is the most prevalent cause of water pollution in India. Major cities of India produce 38,354 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, but the urban sewage treatment capacity is only 11,786 MLD. The scientific analysis of water samples from 1995 to 2008 indicates that the organic and bacterial contamination is severe in water bodies of India. This severity is increased at an even more rapid rate until 2020. According to A reliable source, Around 80% of India’s water is severely polluted because people dump raw sewage, silt and garbage into the country’s rivers and lakes. This has lead to high scarcity of drinkable water. Experts predict that 40% of people may not have a connection to a clean water source by 2030. Then how come are we yet not sincere about not just saving water but Ourselves? As urban areas households get more and more facilities of 24*7 running water taps and availability of drinking water, lesser is the value of the latter. Around 70% of wastewater from household, industries, etc. goes untreated and each day, more than 40 million liters of wastewater flows directly into India’s lakes, rivers and ocean. This waste while travelling from small to big waterbodies, go on contaminating all of it along with the organisms living within. Lakhs of fishes and other underwater living organisms die as they eat or get caught in this waste. This waste even covers the inner and outer surface area of the water at times and thus disbalancing the oxygen levels in the water, due to which the organisms die in huge quantities. This water also enters the groundwater and makes it polluted and undrinkable as well.

Further, this water when reaches to households it immensely affects the health of individuals especially, children. Each year, more than 1.5 million Indian children die from diarrhea. It affects the irrigation systems in fields as this water doesn’t allows the crops to grow properly due to it’s I’ll properties, infectious and diseased bacteria into it. Because of the poor infrastructure and absence of sewage control, 38 million Indians suffer from waterborne diseases like typhoid, cholera and hepatitis every year. Worldwide, waterborne diseases cause more deaths than AIDS, tuberculosis and measles combined in children under 5-years-old. This severity of pollution affects humans and other organisms, plus our food security and the GDP growth of nation. As the diseases spread, the more people get ill and cease work which decreases productivity of companies, crops damage reduces the agricultural revenue too. Hence proved, that this problem is not as small as we think of it. Be it socially or economically it has a bad effect on the country as a whole. It is necessary for all the people to get educated regarding the same as soon as possible and start contributing their part in preventing water pollution and wastage.

Steps taken..

India is taking several steps to rebalance the quality of its water source, from flocculation and reuse of industrial water to the contributions that local Indian startups are making. In Chennai, a city in Eastern India, industrial water reuse rose from 36,000 to 80,000 cubic meters in 3 years, from 2016 to 2019. VA Tech Wabag, a water company quartered in Chennai, also built numerous water reuse plants all across India. As of 2020, VA Tech Wabag contributed immensely to the production of more than 18 million cubic meters of clean water every day, which has positively impacted almost 100 million people globally. In Gujarat, a state of more than 70 million citizens, the government launched its Reuse of Treated Waste Water Policy, which aims to drastically decrease the use of the Narmada River. It will install 161 sewage treatment plants all across Gujarat in order for industrial and construction sectors to use the treated water. Evaluations offer that in 2015, the Indian government installed almost 16,000 reverse osmosis systems in Karnataka and 281 solar electrolytic defluoridation plants in Madhya Pradesh.

But the most important part is we all have to remember that only Government officials and workers alone couldn’t sort this situation for the whole country. Ech and every individual has to do their part to ‘save water and save future’.

“Stories We Never Tell”: A Novel of Hope, Light, and Recovery

In our life, there are some bad phases when there is no one with us, and also we’ve handled our problems alone, and we never wanted to talk about or we were afraid to share because it simply hurts very much.

So today we’re going to review a book that talks about all the things that we never shared with someone. This book talks about hope, light, and recovery in the world of loss, darkness, and destruction. Yes, we’re talking about our respected save Sharma’s fictional novel, “Stories We Never Tell”.

Lessons Full of “Inspirations “:

Story of a girl named Jhanvi who is a growing social media influencer. And a boy named Ashray who had a great onset in his life, with his hard work and determination he changed his dreams into reality, where the girl appears to have it all the comforts jointly but, there was a lack of peace and happiness which was missing.

Apart from the characters ashray and jhanvi, Rishi who was the best friend of ashray helps him as his backbone. Rishi’s nature shows that there is always someone behind our success who is with us and helps in any worst conditions. Whereas Kavya who was Jhanvi’s friend, the same as Rishi Kavya existed as a rock to support Jhanvi in any episodes of life. In short, we can say that the story makes us realize that we need more souls like Rishi and Kavya.

The most beautiful character of this story is Ashray’s mom “Akshita”, brave souls like Akshita who always put together “life and people ”, a support group made away by struggling and beating all the challenges in their lives. Moreover, she also proved that love doesn’t require the relation of blood, she gives us a beautiful message that sometimes we fall in love with people because we feel the time is running but that person may not be the correct one.

Story Talks About Mental Health:

Jhanvi and Ashray, as we know that they both were diverse from each other so their stories are also different. As we see in the story Jhanvi is fighting the outside world, while Ashray’s fight is internal. There’s a line ” I need help” when people read that line they should realize what the author makes us understand, in some aspects of our lives most people don’t know if they need any type of help or not.

In general, the author talks about how being depressed affects relationships, the emotions one has to go through, and the road to diagnosis which is quite relatable.

Characters are very diverse, tricky, and dark and we guess as to the author of this book, it would be very hard to show that after all of these characters are showing hope.

How To Improve Website Ranking

Many of us often wonder how google determines which website to show for particular keyword searches. According to Backlinko the result which appears first on google gets 31.7% of clicks whereas the website which appears second receives just 0.75% of clicks.

Assume you are a business entrepreneur. You have developed a website that is your digital storefront. Having a digital store is very different from having a brick-and-mortar store. You don’t need a patronizer to call visitors into your store because now what you have are virtual visitors.

But how do you draw their attention to your website?

The problem with most people is not how they can develop a website or about the blogging in the website; it’s about whether or not they know how to pull maximum traffic for their website.

Among the most important factors which influence search engine optimization and increase the ranking of websites is having a good website’s content, link popularity, and architecture.

  1. Publish Relevant Content.

The content in a website is, without doubt, the number one factor which determines the search engine rankings and there is no substitute for great content. The fact is search engines are designed in such a way that they constantly develop new technologies to reward the quality of content in your website. Among the things that one should be careful of when posting content is having keyword searches including page titles, the format of the text, the links used in the website, its URLs, and its page content. Therefore it is very important to have a good balance of these aspects as they influence the rankings of websites.

  1. SEO Friendly Content.

It is very important to know about what is trending in the market as it generates almost six times more possibility of a website to catch the eye of viewers than it usually does. One needs to write content optimized for the search engine and the users. Having a content length of 1000 to 2000 words can increase the chances of your search engine rankings also.

  1. Website Architecture.

The architecture of a website largely influences the traffic of the website . one should be cautious of having a website that has content that is easy to read. The architecture of a website should be such that it has codes that are well-formed which thereafter makes it easy for the search engines to read the content of the site.

  1. Link Popularity.

The popularity of a website is a great indicator to prove that it has important content in its website. If a website has high traffic it suggests that its website content has relevant information if particular keywords. Many websites also use the trick of using inbound links of other websites to influence the traffic on their website. When a link of another website gets used as a reference to a website, in this case, search engines consider it as a ‘vote of confidence

These are not the only factors which influence the ranking of a website as there are many more factors to it but these are the important factors which you should keep in mind as it does optimize the ranking of a website.

Applications of Artificial Intelligence-II

In part-I, we have discussed the meaning, scope, stages of AI, few applications, and benefits/uses of AI in society. in this article, we are going to see about the transportation and medical applications of AI.

AI in Social Problems:

Litterati

It is a crowdsourced litter clean-up app and a global database for litter. Identifies litter type, distribution, and location and helps to find more sustainable solutions.

In 2017, 1.1 billion cigarettes were found all over the world.

AI in Road Transportation:

Road transport is a major sector where AI can be applied more prominently. AI can make transportation modes much safer, cleaner, smarter, and more efficient.

Self-driving cars

Self-driving cars are a combination of sensors, cameras, radar, and AI technologies like machine learning and neural networks. Developers use a large amount of data from image recognition systems. Neural networks identify the pattern in data i.e., images from the cameras and sensors. It identifies the traffic signs and signals, boundaries, trees, pedestrian walks..etc.

One such technology developed by Google is Google Waymo Vehicle

Google Waymo Vehicle

It is an example of self-driven cars. It is almost an autonomous vehicle but still needs a human to perform certain functionalities but can drive in ideal conditions.

Levels of Autonomous Cars

LEVEL 0: No Advanced Driver Assistant System(ADAS) is used. The human driver should drive.

LEVEL 1: ADAS assists the driver by its alert systems by its rear-view cameras, but the driver should take care of the steering, brakes, and acceleration

LEVEL 2: Human presence is important even though ADAS will take care of the steering, brakes, or acceleration.

LEVEL 3: ADAS can take driving tasks and parking can be performed under certain conditions. But still, human is the main driver here and need to take care of the circumstances.

LEVEL 4: The driver need not pay much attention as ADAS can take over the driving.

LEVEL 5: No human help is required. ADAS can drive the vehicle under any circumstances.

Truck platooning

Truck platooning is also an example of Artificial intelligence. It is a heavy coupling of trucks. The first truck is occupied by the human driver and the rest are fully automated. They maintain a minimal distance between them and accelerates at the same rates. It might be a risk during traffic and unexpected accidents might occur. In the future, the risk factor is expected to be less.

AI in Medical Sector:

AI helps health professionals to diagnose the patient faster and more accurately.

AI is developing innovative drugs and treatments by reducing medical and diagnosis errors by predicting adverse reactions. Lowers the cost of healthcare work providers and patients.

Problems at the healthcare centers

Due to more number of patients, general practitioners and primary care surgeons are over-burdened because of which there are extremely long waiting at the hospitals.

Solution

Your.MD

Your.MD aka Healthily is the world’s first AI-based health assistant which provides personalized advice about their medical complaints. This app records the symptoms and, maps them with the clinical data compiled from public sources. Engages about thirty doctors to research illness.

Research

It creates a pre-primary care market and eases the burden of medical staff and helps improve their work through digital screening of non-accurate conditions.

Google Launchpad Studio

Creates an ecosystem of applied Machine Learning startups and focuses on healthcare.

BYTEFLIES is the first company to use this studio.

Supervises Learning for Telemedicine

Technology can be used for good and bad so there is a need to be vigilant. The latest technologies are typically applied to the wealthy.

But,

“AI has the potential to extend knowledge and understanding to a broader population. Image-based AI diagnoses of medical conditions could allow for a more comprehensive deployment of the telemedicine”.

Google deep mind

Google deep mind can diagnose diabetic retinopathy like a highly trained ophthalmologist via telemedicine.

‘BETTER DIAGNOSE WITH LESS HUMAN EFFORT’

It uses a portable fundus camera which is deployed in the screening site and transmits images securely to the cloud software platform for analysis and automatically generates a report which facilitates compliance with follow-up examinations.

Slum tourism in developing country

[8:25 PM, 7/14/2021] Priyanshi: Slum tourism in developing country

What comes to your head when you listen to the word developing country? How do you imagine developing countries? Some say developing countries are the countries lacking in capital, resources, infrastructure, revenues, and many more things. So with this, the main target of developing countries becomes to grow in the capital, money.
Now here comes the slums that exist in abundance in these developing countries. What do you think can slum tourism help the people of slums and these developing countries in any way?
let’s discuss, firstly we need to understand that most people consider slum people completely helpless and they don’t even prefer going there for tourism and instead they prefer going in the urban areas. Sometimes people from foreign countries do want to visit these slums and the government of developing countries must encourage slum tourism.
The benefit that will come to these slum people when slum tourism will be encouraged will be that they will get the opportunity to grow economically, when foreigners will purchase something from the residents, then their sell will surely increase. Slum people will also be able to show their talents to others and there will be chances for more job creation. And when there will be job creation, the country will automatically develop as in the sense people will have a better lifestyle and a developing country will move towards being the developed one.
Slum tourism will help the people change their perception towards the people living over there. These slums are called slums because there is a lack of connectivity, the horizon of vision of people is very much limited for these slum people. People don’t even bother to show some visit or any kind of awareness for these people. But when slum tourism will be there, people will come to know about the problems these people face and will try to connect to these people. When this connectivity will increase then definitely government will start focusing more on these areas and will pay more heed to the developmental tasks that should be performed for the benefit of these people.
We all are very well aware that westernization has completely taken place in the urban area and robbed the national culture. But when tourists want to see the national culture then they will only be able to see that in the slum areas because their people live simply and are not at all aware of the determination and perform all the customs and rituals.
So, we just can’t remove the slums but at least we can try to make the slum people grow and so that they can also try to put some effort into making their country a developed one. We can simple just not stop slum tourism just because we want to hide our poor sides of the country from the world instead we should make others as well as socially aware and give them a chance to grow, chance to improve because hiding the flaws won’t let us get rid of them but working on them will help us to get them slowly fade away.
