The Silent Patient – Going to break my silence over it

Silent patient written by Alex Michaelides is the first psychological thriller I have ever read. Hence I am going to be reviewing it like a thriller novice, as it’s my first encounter with psychological warfare that’s unleashed by this book.

Plot Summary

This story essentially revolves around Alicia Berenson and her silence.  Alicia is an artist who fortes in painting photorealistic oil paintings, which becomes the reason for her popularity. But one day when the police are called to her house her reason for popularity alters when they find her husband, Gabriel dead.  Shot in the head five times by her and with a refusal to speak anything after that.

Six years pass since her refusal to speak, no one has heard one word from her. Sitting in the Grove, a forensic institute, we still don’t know what was the reason she committed such a brutal crime. The only clue is the last painting she painted after killing her husband and her long long silence.

Someone finally takes the dare to solve this mystery, this how our second primary protagonist is introduced. Theo Faber, a psychotherapist with a keen interest in Alicia Berenson. Through Theo we come face to face with many elements in Alicia’s life, that may have been instrumental in the murder.

Review

The book is written in fairly simple language, there is not much medical jargon that might have made this book complex. The two protagonists are well developed. But other than that, secondary characters are not given much attention. As the story majorly revolves around the two primary characters.

The story is an easy read, but it is slow progress. You get to know about Alicia and Theo little by little. The driving force behind the story is essentially the question WHY, why did she kill him. While it is a good motivator to continue the book, it lacks the drama and volume for a perfect ending.

The part I liked the most was the ending because it was a well worthy twist to wait for, but I did get an inkling for the last twist. And hence it lacked the dramatics.

This book also gave me an insight into the world of psychology, it brought forward the inner working of our brain and how it works under absurd circumstances. The importance of past and childhood can clearly be seen in this book.  Giving some compelling takeaways as psychology lessons.

Should You Read This Book ?

As a novice, I would definitely suggest giving a one-time read to this book. It is a good book to enter the world of psychological thrillers. Its simple language is definitely suitable for everyone. But if you are looking for a book with adventure and excitement, then maybe this book is not for you. I would give this book  3.5/5 for its interesting plotline and easy to follow plot.

Find your self- love language

When you think of the term love languages, the first thing that may come to mind is relationships and romance. But finding your self- love language is actually an important factor in your self care routine. Here are some helpful tips .

Before delving into self- love languages, let’s know about where this concept from. In 1992, Dr. Gary champan wrote a book called The Five languages. In the book ,he discusses five different ways to express love with your partner. They include words of affirimation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch.

Champan notes that discovering your love language can help you communicate and better connect. With your love! He also adds that everyone expresses and recieves love differently , so it’s important to understand your love language.

When it comes to this love language,it’s the thought behind the gift that counts. You love the idea that someone bought or made a gift with just you in mind. If receiving gifts is your love language ,you truly appreciate when people listen to your interests and passions.

Let’s say that you adore all things music. You’d probably feel emotional if your loved ones suprised you with tickets to your favorite artist’s concert. Another thing that would mean the world to you is if they made you a personalized playlist! Overall, small gifts make you feel special because someone you love thought about you

Dilip Kumar.

Mohammed Yusuf Khan (11 December 1922 – 7 July 2021), known professionally by his stage name Dilip Kumar, was an Indian actor and film producer who worked in Hindi cinema. Referred to as the “Tragedy King” for his portrayal of serious roles and retrospectively as “The First Khan” of Bollywood, he has been described as one of the most successful film stars in the industry and is credited with bringing a distinct form of method acting to cinema. Kumar holds the record for most wins for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (eight, which was later equalled by Shah Rukh Khan), and was also the inaugural recipient of the award.

In a career spanning over five decades, Kumar worked in over 65 films. He debuted as an actor in the film Jwar Bhata (1944), produced by Bombay Talkies. Following a series of unsuccessful ventures, he had his first box office hit in Jugnu (1947). Kumar found further success with the romantic Andaz (1949), the swashbuckling Aan (1952), the social drama Daag (1952), the dramatic Devdas (1955), the comical Azaad (1955), the epic historical Mughal-e-Azam (1960), the social dacoit crime drama Gunga Jamuna (1961), and the comedy Ram Aur Shyam (1967). Both Andaz and Aan briefly became the highest-grossing Indian film upto that point, a feat later achieved by Mughal-e-Azam, which sustained the record for 11 years. As of 2021, the latter remains the highest-grossing film in India when adjusted for inflation.

The 1970s saw Kumar’s career take a downturn, marked by a string of commercial failures. In 1976, he went on a five-year hiatus from film performances and returned with the revolutionary drama Kranti, which was the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. He continued to play leading roles in films such as Shakti (1982), Karma (1986), and Saudagar (1991). His last on-screen appearance was in the commercially unsuccessful Qila (1998), which saw him in a dual role. Kumar later served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s parliament, from 2000 to 2006.

Kumar’s personal life was the subject of much media attention. He was in a long-term relationship with actress and frequent co-star Madhubala that ended after the Naya Daur court case in 1957. He married actress Saira Banu in 1966 and resided in Bandra, a suburb of Mumbai, until his death in 2021. For his contributions to film, the Government of India awarded him with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015, the country’s third and second-highest civilian awards respectively. He was also awarded India’s highest accolade in the field of cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. In 1998, the Government of Pakistan conferred Kumar with Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian decoration, making him the only Indian to have received the honor.

All About Background Stories of Characters With Liney- The Notebook!

“You can, you should, and if you’re brave enough to start, you will. Writing is magic, as much as the water of life as any other creative art. The water is free, so drink. Drink and be filled up.”

  • Stephen King

Today’s article highlights everything regarding the usage of background stories for your bookish characters! When we come up with characters in our story, it becomes essential to give a short or a long background story in order to introduce their lives and make it interesting for us as readers to empathize or criminalize the character in our head. Background stories thus, not only introduce the character, but also can act as an important medium for retaining the suspense factor in the story. Let us learn how and when to incorporate background stories with Liney who will be addressing you!

Hello Folks! I am Liney – A Notebook which is always so very handy when it comes to Writing. I guess my purpose of being here has been already explained to you! So, without wasting any more time, let us begin.

“Background Stories Can Be Incorporated In Two Possible Ways!”

“Firstly, it could be used simply to elaborate on the life of the protagonist or any other character of the story and secondly it can be used to reveal the suspense. For instance, a serial killer’s background story could be revealed at the end, that it was the family torture and tyranny that made him follow the heinous profession. In short, a simple background story is at the beginning which could be short or long depending on the amount of information you wish to reveal about that specific character while a suspenseful background story is at the end to conclude the story effectively.”

“Background Stories At The Beginning Must Be Short.”

“This is essential to maintain the suspense factor. Background stories must be short in the beginning or you could possibly narrate an incomplete background story in the beginning and reveal the remaining matter at the end in order to make the story engaging.”

“There Are Three Types Of Narrating Background Stories!”

“Let us take an example of a character here named Amanda who is the protagonist. First type of narration would involve her own confession at the end may be for the suspenseful story and the second one could involve her boyfriend Dave who narrates it on behalf of her. The third type involves third person narration that is you, as an author narrate it and make the readers acquainted with it thereby breaking the ice!”

“A Background Story Could Be Shown As A Thought Process Of That Particular Individual.”

“Yes! This is an interesting way of revealing a background story. Again let us consider Amanda here. She could be shown in a state of trance and then a vivid description of her background story as to how she imagines it, could be jotted down word to word. This could be better done in the middle or at the end of the story.”

“A Background Story May Or May Not Include Setting!’

“There isn’t any compulsion to incorporate the setting in the background story of the character. Sometimes, authors prefer to do that in the middle of the story. Background stories could be shown as explaining the criminal life of the character, or the torturous family life of the character, or to project the memories of the character which could be haunting or hunky dory. Simple background stories that explain the setting follow an ancient version of writing. People prefer beginning stories abruptly and then in the middle section of the story, is the background and current life of that character revealed.  Also, background stories that include setting are mostly third person narrations made by the author himself. Narrations made by the characters don’t or shouldn’t ever incorporate settings because that makes the content look amateurish and you don’t want your readers to judge you on the basis of that, do you?”

“Addition Of Background Stories For Characters Depends On The Genres!’

“It totally does. You don’t require background stories for characters in a motivational genre book whose main object is to motivate the readers through the characters and not emphasize on the story. Background stories mostly adorn, fictitious stories because of the prime focus on the unfolding of the story and the personality of its characters. Non Fiction too involves background stories but that is as stated earlier, third person narration by the author which is a simple way of acquainting us with the reality since emergence of the suspense factor isn’t mandatory here. Thus, it is all linked with the suspense factor which makes us decide accordingly.”

LINUX

After it’s first launch , thousands of programmers and users got attracted towards LINUX . Today we can say that Linux is the first choice of millions of people all over the globe . It is different from other operating systems as it comes with a host of positive developments . This is because of what LINUX offers to users and programmers , such as scalability , security , consistency , user friendliness , freedom and non pirated enterprise software . Many of the advantages of Linux are an aftermath of its origins , deeply rooted in UNIX .

Linux is Free : Linux is a freely distributable operating system . The first thought that comes to mind is what does free means . When we say Linux is free that does not mean it is always free of cost . Here , free implies the freedom to work . You can download the Linux for free from Internet , without registration and without going into per user per year kind of licensing . You are free to use , free to customize , free to modify , free to distribute and also free to brand your modified variant . Modification is possible because its source code is freely available . This makes the Linux free . It has already been explained that no licensing is required for Linux . Again , this does not mean that there is no license . Like any other software Linux also has a license . Linux comes with GNU Public License (GPL) . The license states that anybody who may want to use and apply Linux can do so . Anybody has the right to change Linux and eventually redistribute a changed version , on the condition that he makes available the code after redistribution . In other words we can say that you are always free to grab a kernel image , for any of your functionality as long as your client can still have a copy of that code .

Linux is Hardware Independent : Linux is compatible with nearly all available hardware . As mentioned in the previous section , its source code is freely downloadable and that also comes with the GPL license , you are free to follow the documentation available and customize so as to work with your unsupported hardware . This makes the Linux hardware independent .

Linux is Secure : Linux has proven , beyond doubt , the sound security level it offers . This security aspect is the key feature of Linux and its security model is entirely based on UNIX , which we all know is very robust and of proven quality . In Linux , security is not only restricted to the security from internet threats but it is also very much secure from other system related breaches or malpractices . Linux offers security at all levels , such as User level , Application level , System level , Device level , Inner threats , External threats .

Linux is Scalable : When Linux was in the gestation process , its creators wanted to make an operating system that was extensively suitable for any application , any hardware , and any process . They wanted it to work with computers with high power and capacities like of super computers , mainframes , and with computer for personal use like PCs , laptops and even with computers of limited resources like Palmtop , PDAs , etc., so that Linux fits everywhere .

Death of Cinema Halls to Birth of Over The Top Platforms

The world has just started recovering from the deadly Covid-19 virus, even though it is a thing to be happy about, there are still sectors that are trying to rise including the entertainment industry (movie productions, theaters, film cities) from the hard hit by the pandemic.

India cinemas, with 6780 single screens and 2,100 multiplexes, is going through dark months amid the Covid-19 pandemic. This pandemic has resulted in the death of more than 40% of the single screens across the nation. Even though, the theaters nation-wide have implemented rules and regulations to minimize the danger by separated seats with 50% occupancy and encouraging digital payments. It would not be right to mention that the theater halls are full, as there are still large groups of people in the country who are hesitant to step inside cinema halls. Contrast to this, cinema lovers feel heartbroken to stare at empty cinema halls. It is predicted by many that most of the theater halls wouldn’t be able to survive the pandemic, in other words, many theaters will go missing when the pandemic comes to an end. This great fall of theaters has led many stars of the cinema industry to go for OTT release of their movies.

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT THAT A MOVIE CAN ALSO TEACH A LEADERSHIP LESSON? HERE IS ONE

Breif About Movie

Lakshya is a patriotic movie launched in 2004. The movie showcase how an aimless person who under the influence of his friend joined Army Academy. He ran away due to the frequent punishments he received there but returned with an aim of joining army. Due to his efforts in the Academy he joined the army where he led a team of 12 army officers and soldiers to a successful clash to defeat the Infiltrators and re acquire the territory occupied by them.

Goal Orientation

“Lakshya” as the name of the movie suggests the movie revolves around the value of having a goal in the life. Whether it be an individual, group, organisation all requires an aim to work upon. The protagonist of this film (Karan) was a lazy and aimless young man who has no goals for his future. He joined a Military Academy under the influence of his friend and as a result he ran away from the academy due to the punishments he had to face due to his undisciplined and lazy attitude. But after he firmly decided to join the army  he returns, takes his punishment, becomes a disciplined and focused officer cadet and eventually commissions into the Army.

Believe in Yourself

To achieve a goal a person, need to have faith in himself/herself that  he/she can achieve the goal and is ready to face all the challenges and hurdles that act as a barrier in the same. The person should follow the policy that “ I can, and I will.”

When a person builds a believe in himself/herself then this believe acts as a self motivation which plays a crucial role in achieving the individual goals and the goals of the organisation with whom he/she is associated.

In the movie the proctor along with other team members were able to climb a 1000-foot-high rock cliff of the mountain because of the determination and the self believe they proved that nothing is impossible.

The Belief Wheel – IABC Central Oklahoma

Team Spirit

A single person can’t achieve an organisational goal on his own. He requires the support , unity and co-ordination of all his team members whether it be his senior or sub-ordinates. All the efforts are worthless if the aim is not achieved. A single person can never be expert in all the fields and requires the knowledge and experience of other members to achieve the goal. This team spirit helps to raise new and innovative ideas to make the path of achieving goal effective and efficient. It also helps to improve the interpersonal relationships between the employees of an organisation which is crucial for best output from an employee.

Henri Fayol in one of his Principles Of Management i.e. in the Principle of “Esprit De Corps” defines  that an organization must make every effort to maintain group cohesion i.e. a feeling of unity in the organization. He adds that a conflict in the team member and division of team due to conflict is a serious issue and needs to be resolved at priority to achieve the objective of an organization.

In the movie a team of 12 army officers and soldiers had a faith in each other and had a feeling of unity which helped them to defeat the infiltrators

The Man from Earth

Every culture has a form of immortality and its a concept used in almost every type of media, be it the villain’s motivation or the hero’s reward. Immortality comes in many forms and shapes like using an ancient artefact, using magic, using technology or even being a supernatural creature grants immortality in a fantasy setup. Rarely any depiction of immortality deals with the darker aspects like being detected and experimented, psychological impacts of possibly outliving everything and everyone you loved. Immortality can be as much of a curse as it would be a boon, imagine being alive more than a 1000 years from now and being the only one who cannot connect because you’ve held on the past for so long. Todays generation is a hectic and tired one, only some would dare to accept immortality.

The movie from 2007 follows Professor John Oldman who seems to have survived for almost 14000 years, the entire movie is set in and arounds Johns home and mostly contains intellectual dialogues between him and his friends. John is moving from his current location and is stopped by his friends for an impromptu Farwell party. His friends are his colleagues that are experts in their respective fields and play a crucial part in each story told by John. His friends notice some peculiar things in Johns belongings like what seems to be an original Van Gogh, a hunting bow, some historic texts and objects that could be dated back to the Magdalenian era.

Oldman reluctantly start telling his story to the others. He relocates every ten years to keep anyone from realizing that he doesn’t age. He begins by telling his friends of his origin and later life when he realised he doesn’t age, he started out as a caveman from the Magdalenian era. Yes, our connection with “Memes” is significant.

“If you got exceptional humor be my friend”

In a wide variety of contexts, we employ memes nowadays.
They help us connect and feel we are part of, can be the beginning of a conversation, and even assist you to manage a problem or make an observation.
Memes also allow us to relax while we surf and dwell in distressing news. They are free entertainment, a choice always even if you don’t have time to spend more time. It’s even easier to have them penetrate a large variety of specialist circles, being so great mixing cultures and touches of humor, to generate viral content.

The introduction of Meme Studies, an actual academic course on memes, at Northwestern University in the US state of Illinois in 2011 has long been cited as a barometer of the internet’s impact on society, from language to culture to beliefs.

Memes have a variety of goals and functions, but at their most basic level, they serve as a means of expressing people’s thoughts and feelings. Memes are created by appropriating sequences of words from television shows and films, which are then taken out of context, remixed with other content, and given new meanings in a humorous and relevant way. Meme content might range from whining about the difficulties of being a college student to expressing shame experienced during a daily encounter – something that everyone can relate to.

Memes, on the other hand, can have an impact on how we connect with others. Some aspects of meme culture have caused ripples in our social fields outside of the internet. After all, every meme has a creator who created it intending to spread a viral message, whether for enjoyment or to persuade others.

What exactly are memes? And how does it matter to our society?

Memes are statements that are clear, brief, and explicit, and this cultural paradigm reflects current society’s mentality – one that loves entertainment, celebrates materialism, and reinforces people’s need to stay relevant.
Memes can be used as propaganda tactics because of their accessibility and capacity to reach a large audience in minutes (and become part of the online vernacular in days), which means they can readily instill and cement opinions that fast become popular among cybernauts (a habitual user of the internet).

The working of memes that make them interestingly catchy to the readers allows them to further cultivate their humor and let them become a new mark or a strong speaker of the society. As we know memes are not only for entertainment but also imprint a deep message for society.

Memes allow people to communicate with one another. Knowing the correct memes can assist you in joining a group. They give a sensation of belonging to a group.
Memes are an excellent approach to get influence online because they are based on social media today. People can gain more followers by creating and reblogging popular memes, and these social ties can be used in both positive and negative ways.

Memes don’t merely bridge languages; their relatability fosters a sense of community among specific internet users of a certain age range. Memes are a simple and amusing way for youngsters to communicate with their pals, whether they’re used to express their opinions about certain socio-political concerns or to reinforce their fascination with famous people. Indeed, the process of spreading memes, sharing them on social media platforms, and tagging their friends within specific meme pages has improved global communication and made a significant contribution to globalization’s success.

But memes, just like many other parts of online culture, are easily misrepresented by those who aren’t familiar with them. Some people believe they are unimportant. Others believe memes are destructive and damaging to our communication, others in some sectors believe that memes, which have become the vernacular language of many a teen, have had a detrimental influence.

They suggest that memes obstruct communication in more ways than just reducing things to one-liners and visuals. They can be utilized to exacerbate hostile and discriminatory sentiments against various races, genders, religions, and sexualities, therefore expanding rather than closing the gap between people.

Memes, on the other hand, are a medium of communication that may be utilized for a variety of objectives. They can help to bring about constructive societal changes, but they can also be exploited to cause harm to others. It’s critical to establish a realistic understanding of memes’ potency as a communication medium, both today and in the future.
