Life without dad is swimming without life jacket in the ocean. He will lift his child up on his shoulder for a reason that he has to see the world which is not even seen by him.  He may be poor, but he never let his child to feel down, instead he always make his own daughter/son to feel as a princess/prince of his own kingdom. Father’s Day was celebrated for the first time on July 5, 1908, in West Virginia, USA, after a mining incident took place. It was observed in honor of all the fathers who lost their lives in that mishap. Father’s Day is a holiday of honoring fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society. The third Sunday of June is celebrated as Father’s Day it acknowledges and celebrates the contribution of fathers to their own families and society at large. It is the day one recognizes the importance of the role a father plays in one’s life. To show their love for their fathers or father-like figures, children buy or make presents and write and draw cards.

Why third Sunday of June is celebrated as Father’s Day

The celebration of paternal bond is observed on third Sunday of June and this year it is on 20 June, 2021

The celebration of this lovely, warm paternal bond is quite popular all over the world, though the dates of observance might differ in some countries. However, India follows the American date which is the third Sunday of June. For Catholic European countries like Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19 which is St. Joseph’s Day. Australia observes it on the first Sunday of September; Norway, Sweden and Finland follow the second Sunday in November. Russia celebrates on February 23.

The aim of the day to express appreciation and acknowledge the role of the father figure in children’s lives, and society as a whole. UNICEF too, had harped on the critical role the fathers play in early childhood learning.


What is the reason of celebration only in third Sunday of June ?


Father’s Day originated in the United States. It was on 19 June, 1910, the first Father’s Day celebration took place.
Sonora Dodd, the daughter of American Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart had requested the Spokane Ministerial Alliance observe 5 June which was her father’s birthday, to honor fatherhood. Her father had raised six children, as a single parent. Her deep sense of gratitude, love propelled her to make this request.
She was also inspired by Anna Jarvis’ endeavor to bring about Mother’s Day, and proposed the Father’s Day idea.
Finally, the Church agreed upon the third Sunday of June to commemorate. Following which, much later in 1966, President Lyndon B Johnson announced the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day as he signed a presidential proclamation.
Almost 62 years later from 1910, Father’s Day was declared as a national holiday by Richard Nixon who was the then President of the US (1972).
There is also information that states Father’s Day was observed on 5 July, 1908, in West Virginia after a mining accident in Monongah, USA, to honour the fathers who lost their lives in the disaster.
Since then, Father’s Day has been celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. Father’s Day celebration emphasizes the paternal bond, the role of father figure in children’s lives, families, and society at large.

Stability, when we ponder upon this, we can think of many things. For some, it means having a peaceful life sheltered within the four walls and a roof, while for some, it means well enough income for sustainability while others might think about their plans like marriage. But for these versions of stability, one has to work hard and sacrifice everything in his way to achieve it. But there is one kind no one has to ever work for, a kind we receive since we are born in this world, that is, the stability provided by the pillar of our lives, our dad.

A dad is an individual who sacrifices all his versions of stability so that his son and daughter can live a stable life. He gives up his peace, his savings so that he can secure his young ones future. He devotes his entire existence to us to live a better and happy life at the expense of his countless days of sleep.

A mother may carry us inside her womb for nine months but, it’s the father that helps us take our first step. When we fall, it’s the mother who treats our injuries but, it’s a father who tells us to get back up and try again. While a mother supports us emotionally, it’s the father who shows us what real strength is.

On the brink of this pandemic, where many lost their families, jobs, houses, the pillars of our household didn’t lose hope. Without proper public transportations, they travelled long miles for their work, worked alternatively from their home and office to fulfil the shortages inside their household. And unfortunately, many fathers lost their lives due to this.

Their real strength is hope. Hope to feed their families at heart’s content with their earnings, hope to see their kids become successful in life, hope their loved ones to lead a healthy life and hope that their family would live on if something were to happen to them. They may or may not have higher qualifications in this modern era of technologies, but they have the best experience when it comes to life. Having been through countless ups and downs and having seen the lowest of the low points in life, they try to give their kids a perfect life so that they wouldn’t have to experience the cruelty of the world. They protect from the frontline while stepping aside during celebrations shows how selfless and giving their love is.

So on this Father’s Day, let’s appreciate his sacrifice and show him that his hard work was never in vain. Let us show him that we were always thankful for his guidance whenever we stuck at crossroads, felt safe when he covered us with a blanket at night, were happy when he fulfilled all our wishes without any expectations. But, we also got worried when he was late, tensed when he caught a cold, felt sorry when we saw the dark circles under his tired eyes, cried when we saw him hurt but loved him from the bottom of our hearts as he was and always will be the permanent stability of our lives.

History behind Father’s Day…

In our society, we celebrate different days about different personalities like Mother’s Day, Teacher’s Day, and women’s Day. The main purpose of celebrating these days is to pay tribute to those personalities, Likewise, every year the father’s day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. In ancient times, this day had celebrated on 19 of March as Saint Joseph Day, but in present time, every year the father’s day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June this tradition of celebrating Father’s day was started after an incident.

In 1907 many men were died in an explosion occurred in a mine in West Virginia. The Father’s day was started in the remembrance of these men, Sonora Dodd from Washington had introduced this term “Father’s Day” in 1909. Sonora Dodd had very interesting story related to Father’s Day. She used to love her father William Jackson. Her mother died in her childhood, so her father brought her up along with her 5 siblings. William Jackson died in a war. When Sonora Dodd had heard about Mother’s Day, she told the pastor of local Church that

“Similar Day should be celebrated for dads too”.

Therefore, she proposed 5th June for Father’s Day, as that day was her father’s Birthday, but there was not enough time left for ceremony, So pastor denied her proposal and then this ceremony took place on third Sunday of June. At start, Sonora Dodd could not get any success to advertise this Day, so she left advertising it and she went to arts institute of Chicago for studies. In 1930 she came back to her city and started advertising Father’s Day once again. This time she got very success in it, because she got the support of Local Businessmen. Father’s Day was an opportunity to local businessmen. Specially for those who belongs to gift selling businesses. After 1930, Father’s Day become a commercial day.

The thing we need to do is that we should not only show our love to our parents but should also take a great care of them in old age. HISTORY OF FATHER’S DAY

This day was founded in the USA in Spokane, Washington YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. There it was first celebrated on June 19, 1910. Sonora was inspired by Anna Jarvis’s suggestion of celebrating Mother’s Day in honour of her mother and felt of celebrating a similar day for honouring the fathers. Sonora’s father, William Jackson was a Civil War veteran. He raised six children alone being a single parent. She wanted this day to be celebrated on her father’s birthday which was on June 5. But the church’s time impediment ended up postponing it to the third Sunday of June.

SIGNIFICANCE OF FATHER’S DAY

On this occasion, children appreciate their father for supporting them emotionally, mentally and even financially and get to know that how much a father is important in their lives. Children offer gifts and gratitude to their father. This helps to bridge up a stronger bond between a child and a father. Being a father is sharing half of the parental bond with their children.
