Why Mother Tongue is important?

Mother tongue is the language that a child gets to hear after birth and grows up listening to it and adapting it. Mother tongue is also called as the native language and it helps to give shape to our thoughts and beliefs. In today’s world where a child is expected to be proficient in not just one but rather two to three languages, knowing one’s mother language by heart becomes secondary. However, learning one’s mother tongue is not only important but is beneficial for the child as well. If a child wants to be well versed in any foreign language, he must be well versed in his mother tongue the first thing. Below are some of the reasons as to why one’s mother tongue is so important and hence should not be taken lightly.

1) Our Mother tongue helps us to stay grounded to our traditional culture and values. It is a means of keeping our culture alive. No matter what part of the world, one must always take pride in one’s culture and help to bring it forth to the outer world but that can only be done if one is well known with one’s mother tongue

2) If one is well versed in one’s own mother tongue, he can learn a secondary language faster. He will also be a better communicator and will have better writing and reading skills in other languages.

3) If one is aspiring to become an entrepreneur, then knowing his mother tongue will benefit him while interacting with local customers. The possibilities of making money with one’s mother tongue has also increased globally.

4) Knowing one’s mother tongue is a matter of pride and honor. It boosts our self esteem and confidence while making us connected with our cultural identity.

Jadav Peyang from Jorhat district in Assam was given the title of “The Forest Man” in Delhi by government of Indian on World Earth Day in 2010 for turning a barren land of 550 acres into a forest all by himself. It took him nearly 30 years to accomplish the task. It is officially called as Molai Forest. The locals call it “Molai” as a tribute to Jadav who used to be a fair child with pink cheeks, thus resembling a Mola(raddish in local language). At the age of 16, Jadav Payeng had experienced that a large number of snakes died due to excessive heat after floods washed them onto the sandbar. He then planted around 20 bamboo seedlings on the sandbar of the Brahmaputra river.

He started working in the forest from 1979 when the Social Forestry division of Assam’s Golaghat district had launched a scheme of tree plantation on 200 hectares of land at Aruna Chapori, situated about five kilometres from Kokilamukh in Jorhat district. He was one of the labourers of the project which was completed after five years.
Jadav has a simple solution to the global problem of depleting forest cover: teach our children to love Nature. “The rest will happen on its own,” he feels. According to wildlife experts, the forest atrracts around world’s 80% migratory birds.Jadav’s story also inspired a children’s book, Jadav and the Tree Place, that tells his story of how he made a forest that is now home to wild animals. He has been the subject of award-winning documentaries and now people travel across the globe to see the Molai forest. His inspirational story is also being taught in ecology classes at schools across the United States.

The Dark Side of Ghana

Ghana is well known for it’s dark chocolate. Infact, it is the 2nd largest chocolate exporter in the world. Several children are forced into child labour for the extraction of cocoa seeds and they are made to work from the crack of dawn till night. To keep the price of chocolate minimum, child labour is infused since children are not paid for their work. Top international chocolate brands such as Nestle, Hershey’s and Mars buy cocoa from them. Apart from child labour, there is another ritual since prevalent in Ghana that is inflicted upon young women.
Trokosi or female ritual servitude still exists in parts of Ghana, Togo , Benin and parts of Nigeria too till this very day. It takes place when a member if a family commits a crime. The crime can be rape, theft , murder etc. And once the crime is uncovered the family members fear punishment from the gods. So in order to please the gods, the father of the family would take one of his virgin daughters and give her to a local shrine as atonement for the crimes made by the family member. The shrines are run by old male priests. The young girls are forced to work for these priests without any proper education, food or clothing and often raped and sexually assaulted and in many cases leaving her with children  who continue to live and work in these shrines. However NGO’s and other human rights organizations are fighting this practice. Many individuals and private groups in Ghana have had successes in persuading priests to stop this practice.
Since 1998, International Needs Ghana which is a local group played an integral part in a campaign which led to the release of around 2,800 Trokosi girls and the banning of the Trokosi practice in Ghana. Even Today, International Needs help many of the liberated girls by providing education and vocational training. At the Adidome Vocational Training Centre, the girls can take free training courses to learn new skills. They can learn how to bake, sew , make beauty products and so on.
They are also given literacy classes. The centre also offers medical check-ups counselling and support for the girls. And once they are done with the training and leave the centre they are supported with equipments so they can begin their own small business and make a living.

Shashi Tharoor and his ideology on British rule in India

An author, politician and former International civil servant, Shashi Tharoor, once said – ” India matters to me and i would like to matter to India.”
He is currently a third-term Lok Sabha MP representing the Thiruvananthapuram constituency. People mostly regard him as “Oxford dictionary”, because of his impeccable knowledge of English Literature. Shashi Tharoor, in his book named An Era of Darkness: The British empire in India that was published in the year 2016 talked about colonization and the
disastrous effects it had on Indians. In his book, he explained about the evils of British rule and how it affected us Indians, deeply explaining how we were being trampled upon by the Britishers and treated as animals without any freedom. Tharoor wrote in details how the Britishers looted India off of it’s rich resources, culture and wealth. In one of the most famous lines from the book, he writes:

“They (the British) basked in the Indian sun and yearned for their cold and fog-ridden homeland; they sent the money they had taken off the perspiring brow of the Indian worker to England; and whatever little they did for India, they ensured India paid for it in excess. And at the end of it all, they went home to enjoy their retirements in damp little cottages with Indian names, their alien rest cushioned by generous pensions supplied by Indian taxpayers.” Tharoor has remarked that every single thing or development that occured in British India such as establisment of Railways, parliamentary democracy, rule of law and others were simply done for their own benefits and luxury and not for Indians or for India’s progress and betterment. Tharoor explains that though some British legacies proves to be useful today, however they were just mere side effects that came along with colonial authoritarianism.
Tharoor genuinely believes that after 200 years of immense brutality and injustice to Indians, Britain owes an apology to India and Indians. Some of the most outrageous events in history of India took place under British reign. For instance, according to recent studies, the Bengal Famine of 1943 that costed millions of lives was caused not only by drought but also by the complete failure of the policy of British India under the Ministry of Winston Churchill, who is remembered as the man who caused the Bengal famine. Furthermore, the horrendous Jallianwala Bagh massacre was a heinous crime committed under British Raj. Today, Indian society is divided along lines of caste, creed, religion and culture but it is little known fact that the Colonial Government ignited such divides and pitted one community against the other. Shashi Tharoor did a marvellous job with the book and made us realise what we had forgotten with passage of time.

Is rice consumed by humans harmful for parrots?

There is a urban legend that goes – “consuming uncooked rice is harmful for a bird and can even lead to it’s death.” Out of fear of causing harm to flocks, people have stopped throwing rice at weddings. If you are a parrot owner who has been believing in this urban legend so far, it is time to get rid of this misconception and include rice to the diet of your feathered buddy! No one is quite sure how this myth emerged but there is no truth to this notion and on the factual side rice can be cosidered a tasty and nutritious dietary staple. The infamous myth of rice killing birds was based upon the faulty assertion that rice upon consumption consumes all the moisture in a bird’s stomach and henceforth expands and causes tearing, ultimately leading to it’s demise. But the fact is rice after soaking up moisture in a bird’s stomach will expand in a way that will lead to a healthy digestion.
However, the question of focus is – what kind of rice is more preferrable? Raw or cooked? Or how much quantity of rice should you feed your pet parrot?
Rice contains protein, Iron, thiamine, niacine and magnesium that promotes optimal physiological function in birds. Rice is also rice in carbs and helps in providing energy to birds. Technically, birds can be fed both raw and cooked rice. While parrots living in the wild habitat are most likely to consume uncooked rice, one can feed their pet parrot cooked rice. Infact, in many cases it has been observed that parrots after getting a taste of soft and starchy flavour of cooked rice have rejected raw rice. Furthermore, birds with small beaks find it difficult to consume and digest uncooked rice. It is extremely important to keep in mind that under no circumstances, one should feed their parrot fried rice since they can be detrimental to their health. Fried rice contains oil, salt and other ingredients which are unhealthy substances for birds. Excess salts can lead to hardening of arteries and cause heart problems that can be fatal for your parrot. Only pure rice without any additives is considered nutritious for birds. While rice is considered healthy, one shouldn’t force it upon their pets if they refuse to consume rice. Just like humans, your pet bird also has his/her own set of preferences. Therefore, it is advisable that you consult your vet before making any changes to your pet’s diet routine.

The land that worships Living Goddessess!

Nepal , also known as The Land of Mount Everest, one can find living goddessess called kumaris. Young girls as young as 3 year olds are worshipped as real life goddessess. These goddesses are not deemed as mortal beings by the people and they lead a very unique life. They can’t talk to anyone except their families, can only eat certain kind of food and are allowed to wear only red. They have to stay inside the Kumari Temple until the end of their reign and can only go outside 13 times a year. Their feet cannot touch the ground, so they are carried all the time. Everyday, the kumari is worshipped by hundreds of people who adorn her with gifts. For hundreds of years, the Nepalese believed that  Kumari is the reincarnation of Hindu goddess  Durga. However, not anyone can become a Kumari. These girls are volunteered by their parents to a special kind of audition where the priest chooses who the next Kumari will be. The girl has to have 32 characteristics of physical perfection. Some of them are flawless skin, black eyes, black hair, high forehead, thighs like those of a deer and many, many more. The child cannot have a scar or wound on her body. After this, the girl has to go through a very unique test where she is put in a room with 108 buffalo heads covered in a pool of blood and with men wearing masks and dancing around. If the girl gets scared or cries , immediately she is disqualified from being a kumari. However, if she doesn’t show any signs of fear, it only means that she has just proved her valour and has become a goddess. She can remain a goddess as long as she doesn’t hit puberty. The moment she gets her first period, the girl is no longer seen as a goddess but she returns back to being a mortal. Many people feel that this tradition is strange and goes against human rights of young girls. Many Nepalese have even protested but it is a tradition that the Nepalese have believed for over hundreds of years and it is a tradition where it gives them an opportunity to interact with a goddess and till this day, it is practised in Nepal.

The country with the strictest travel rules for tourists

Photo by Leonid Altman on Pexels.com

A lot of us like to travel and visit places. Taking a short break from our monotonous daily routine surely does make us feel refereshed and energised. But today, i am going to take you to a tour to North Korea where we have to follow the strictest travel rules on the planet. If you reside in USA, South Korea or Malaysia, it is highly likely that you may never get to see North Korea with your eyes unless you get a special permission from both country’s governements. Incase you are wondering why travelling might be difficult for people belonging to these 3 countries, it is simply cause of the leader of North Korea named Kim Jong-un who has a disliking towards these countries. But incase, you make it, make sure not to take blue denims or have any piercings or makeup with you since they are banned in the country. Also, taking Bible with you is a big NO NO since it can get you publicly executed. For North Koreans, their leaders are worshipped as Gods and henceforth practising any other religion is prohibited. It is officially an atheist state, and government policy continues to interfere with an individual’s ability to practice a religion. Also, before boarding your flight you might want to check your phones if they contain any pictures or videos that might go against their culture or their government and delete them before stepping onto North Korean soil since they might get you into trouble. Whilst touring in North Korea, your tour guide will watch you very closely and you won’t have any freedom of clicking random pictures cause if you click any wrong pictures of museums, galleries, police, soldiers or even poor people, you and you tour guide might be tagged as spies by authorities. Also, talking to locals and being friendly with them can make the government dubious enough to regard you as a spy! One cannot make fun of their leaders or point fingers at their statues unless someone wants to get arrested right on spot. Even when you get back to your hotel , you need to be cautious since telephones, tv etc are likely wiretapped! You may visit their country and come back free and safe to your own country but unfortunately, these and much more stricter and harsh laws are the reality of over 25 million North Koreans.

5 Digital Trends that revolutionised 2021

In the online world, lockdown, distance learning, working from home etc have had an enormous impact on us. And not to mention people and businesses alongwith changing technology and trends have had to push onwards and upwards to adapt to the changes and keep ahead in the competition. But with more and more people constricted to the online world, there has been a shift in the type of visual content being consumed and created that led to blooming of design trends and techniques.
Mentioned below are some of design trends that will keep on pushing onwards and upwards into 2021.

1)3D design
3D design technology has been on the radar and will only likely to grow in 2021 as well. Animated 3D figure gives the whole concept a realistic and tangible feeling. Digital-and web designers often use 3D visualization for their products and processes on websites and social media.

Why we love it : Apart from the illusion of depth, what distinguishes this style is the usage of vibrant colors. The textures have got a touch of reality that make it look more like a photo than an illustration.

Who did it best : Tommy Hilfiger.

2)Optical Illusion Design

It is common knowledge that the human eye can be deceived, hence people often have different reactions when they encounter various optical illusions. But optical illusion can work wonders in enhancing a design if one knows how to use them correctly! Optical illusions can not only add an intriguing part to the design but can also brand many products and services. This design trend will work best for brands associated with movement or spirituality.

Why we love it : Since human brains are tuned to learning new things, henceforth optical illusions astonish us cause when we realise what we thought we saw was completely different from what was real.

Who did it best : KitKat

3) Comics and pop art

Pop art and comic books were wildly popular in pop culture and worldwide, decades ago. Comics often use halftones or simplified dot shading to represent color.
The designers in 2021 have been using graphics and illustrative techniques of book art styles as a way to create drama and motion and rescue modern art.

Why we love it : Pop art is fun and approachable. It takes clues from popular culture and it’s subject matter is based on what we deal with everyday like food, entertainment etc. The best part is it is not a complex artwork and has got no hidden meanings to decipher, and because it deals with bold colors often, it appears cheerful to the viewers.

Who did it best : WOW! Chips for girls

4) Black and white design

We are seeing more and more companies adapting to a darker palette. Infact most social media apps have the option to switch to a dark mode color scheme as a preference in their settings since it is less harsh to our eyes. Since the coronavirus pandemic has made our lives “go online” , there comes a huge need to minimize the eye strain. Therefore design schemes with a dark background is being adapted that makes the text pop alongwith minimizing the strain put on eyes. This year more websites and apps will likely be adapting the dark mode.

Why we love it : we love this design cause of it’s subtleness and helps the viewer focus on other aspects of the photo, such as the subject, the textures, shapes, patterns etc by removing the distraction of color. It helps to add statement to the design.

Who did it best : Chanel

5) Retrofuturism

Retrofuturism has prevailed due to it’s bold imagination and will keep on strongly emerging into the design world in 2021. It involves vibrant colors and tech inspired typography all within retro style illustrations and artwork. It involves the occurrence of futuristic themes in retro settings.

Why we love it : This design provides us with an antidote to our uncertain times and encompasses ideas of freedom, hope, liberation, and positivity. Retrofuturism provides a positive outlook which points towards a utopian future, maybe that’s what people want to buy into in these dark times of the pandemic.

Who did it best : Paco Rabanne
