Hyderabad’s high COVID-19 positivity rate worries experts

Report points to abysmally low testing rates in the State of Telangana Amidst apprehension that COVID-19 community transmission may be under way in large urban cities, Hyderabad’s high COVID-19 positivity rate (32.1% on June 23), the highest among major infected cities in India, coupled with low tests per 10 lakh population compared to other cities has been repeatedly red-flagged by worried Central government experts.

Pointing to the abysmally low testing rates in Telangana, the report ‘Testing Status: Hyderabad and Telangana’ accessed by The Hindu notes, “Only 1 out of 19 private labs in Telangana is conducting more than 500 tests per week and testing in Telangana is heavily focussed on Hyderabad. Tests per 10 lakh population in other highly infected districts (Ranga Reddy, Sangareddy, Warangal Urban and Jagaon) is extremely low.”

The document adds that Telangana has the highest positivity rate (June 10-23) in India (27.7%) and consistently ranges from 20 – 40% daily with the lowest tests per 10 lakh population (June 10-23) in India.

“All COVID-red States are being closely monitored and have been instructed to hike testing. Testing is vital to map out the growth and concentration of the virus in the general population. Several States have been instructed on this multiple times,” said a senior government official with ICMR who added that letters were issued to all States recently asking them to ramp-up COVID-19 testing.

The ICMR also has noted that COVID-19 escalation is sharpest in urban cities with Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai and Chennai, also witnessing significant rise in the spread of the virus and added that Telangana has been repeated told to improve its testing scope and reach.

Bringing in the contrast, a senior health official added that neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is testing over 12,000 persons/day and also ramping-up testing to maintain a low mortality rate. “Andhra Pradesh has 336 TruNat machines and 42 labs for COVID-19 testing while Telangana has 21 machines and one lab,” the official added.

According to the Health Ministry, a Central team led by Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, in the Ministry is now in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana to interact with the State officials and coordinate with them to strengthen ongoing efforts for management of COVID-19 there.

The Ministry added that they are expanding the COVID-19 testing labs network across the country, ICMR has inducted 11 new labs in the last 24 hours and the country now has 1,016 diagnostic labs dedicated to COVID-19 which includes — 737 in the government sector and 279 private labs.

“At present, India has Real-Time RT PCR based testing labs — 560 (Govt: 359 + Private: 201), TrueNat based testing labs : 369 (Govt: 346 + Private: 23) and CBNAAT based testing labs : 87 (Govt: 32 + Private: 55),” said ICMR.

‘Bring all helathcare facilities under one umbrella’

Meanwhile, in a statement issued by 26 national and Karnataka-based civil society organisations including Naavu Bharathiyaru Karnataka, All India Drug Action Network, All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Karnataka and Campaign for Dignified and Affordable Healthcare (CDAH), the group has noted that in order to successfully curtail the pandemic, a whole health systems approach is sorely required. This is missing in the current approach where provision of healthcare is seen in a segmented manner. There is a dire need to bring public, private, charitable, medical colleges, corporation facilities under a single umbrella with transparent and well-functioning referral and reporting mechanisms, said the group.

It added that the government could use the COVID-19 situation as a good opportunity to improve the reporting and assisted referral mechanisms from the various public as well private facilities so that the patients are not distressed going from one hospital to another and the treatment given to COVID-19 patients must be in strict adherence to Standard Treatment Guidelines, which should be issued by an appropriate government agency.

 

Jaipur Hospital Served Notice Over Trials in Patanjali COVID Drug

The Rajasthan Health Department has served a notice to the National Institute of Medical Sciences in Jaipur seeking an explanation on the trials of the Patanjali drug that claims it can cure COVID-19. Reports suggest that trials for the controversial ‘Coronil’ drug by Patanjali were conducted at NIMS, Jaipur before it was launched.

Chief Medical and Health Officer, Jaipur, Dr Narottam Sharma told PTI, “We served notice to the hospital on Wednesday evening seeking explanation in three days. The hospital did not inform the state government nor sought permission.”

NIMS has now however, reportedly distanced itself from the drug stating that no clinical trials for the drug were conducted at the hospital. NIMS Chairman, Dr. B.S. Tomar told The New Indian Express that there was no serious case in the patients admitted at the hospital.

“Only 100 asymptomatic patients were given few Ayurvedic medicines under the sponsorship of Patanjali. But we did not prepare any medicine nor did we know its name,” he reportedly said.

Dr. B.S Tomar reportedly claims that he had the ICMR’s trial wing, the Clinical Trials Registry – India’s permission for five ayurvedic medicines to be tested on coronavirus patients.

Earlier, the AYUSH ministry had sought information on the trial of the drug and banned Patanjali from advertising it as a medicine to cure COVID-19.

While the Uttarakhand government has served a notice to Patanjali for its claims about the drug, the states of Rajasthan and Maharashtra have reportedly refused to allow the Patanjali product to be used in their respective states till it received clearance from the AYUSH ministry.

Apple catches TikTok reading user clipboards; won’t do now, says Chinese app

Chinese short-video-making app TikTok has announced it will no longer automatically access user clipboards on Apple iPhones after iOS 14 in Beta exposed the app’s constant reading of user clipboards.

TikTok told The Telegraph that it would stop “snooping on users’ clipboards after iPhone update showed app constantly reads copied text”.

“A security patch from Apple has suddenly exposed just how many smartphone apps are reading users’ clipboards every time they are on screen,” said the report.

In iOS 14 Beta, one of these features is a new banner alert that lets users know if an app is pasting from the clipboard.

This has exposed the behaviour of some popular apps like TikTok as annoyed users who upgraded to iOS 14 Beta went on social media with such complaints.

“For TikTok, this was triggered by a feature designed to identify repetitive, spammy behaviour. We have already submitted an updated version of the app to the App Store removing the anti-spam feature to eliminate any potential confusion,” the Chinese company said in a statement.

According to the report, other apps that read the iOS clipboard include AccuWeather, Call of Duty Mobile and even Google News.

iOS 14 is limited to developers now and the company plans to release a public beta version next month ahead of the launch later this year.

In iOS 14, all apps will now be required to obtain user permission before tracking.

Later this year, App Store product pages will feature summaries of developers’ self-reported privacy practices, displayed in a simple, easy-to-understand format.


Protection is must’: Experts call for following guidelines as India’s Covid-19 cases surpass 5 lakh

India’s Covid-19 tally crossed the five lakh mark on Saturday and it stands at 5,08,953, with the death toll at 15,685 according to Union health ministry. On the other hand, Delhi has 28,329 active cases with the total count reaching 80,188 and 2,558 deaths.

In this regard, medical experts told ANI that the rise in cases in India is still not high as compared to other countries but said that people should follow Covid-19 guidelines such as wearing face masks.

Dr Suresh Kumar, Medical Director, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital said that urban mobility is a likely cause in the spike in cases.

“I think as the numbers are rising, protection is must and we must follow the guidelines by the government wholeheartedly. There is a lot of urban mobility, especially in Delhi and Mumbai which may be a cause for the spike. The population density increases the chances of spreading the infection further. However, our recovery rate is also steadily rising which is encouraging,” Dr Kumar said.

Dr SP Byotra, Chairman, Department of Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said, “We are yet to reach the optimum number of cases. However, there has been flouting of rules by people. We have been continuously insisting that wearing masks is of foremost importance and mandatory. We should be more responsible as a nation until there is specific treatment/vaccination available.”

In addition, Dr Byotra said, “One more important factor is testing. Now, almost 20,000 tests are being conducted which is helping in the detection of cases and ascertain whether they are symptomatic or asymptomatic.”

The Delhi government, in its media bulletin, stated that 19,180 tests were conducted on Saturday taking the total tests to 4,78,336.

Dr Randeep Guleria, Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), told ANI, “Rise in cases in India is still not as high as compared to other countries. In the United States, there have been almost 40,000 cases per day in the last two days. Compared to that, our numbers are not that high.”

“Cases per million population continues to be low and we still have low mortality. Considering the size of our population, the number of cases will be large in absolute terms. But if we are able to keep mortality down, it will be a big success for the country,” he said.

Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan stated that the Covid-19 recovery rate has surged over 58% in India with around three lakh cured and discharged patients.

A brief look at the history of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Monuments, a reminder of proud heritage or history as well as architectural wonders, they are present throughout the world. These sites are also a source of revenue for their respective cities or towns. Most of the monuments that fall under the category of architectural wonders are tourist places with a lot of monetary value, people tend to visit them to gaze upon the marvelous creations of man. One such monument is the leaning tower of Pisa. In 1990, the Italian government enlisted the help of the world’s finest engineers to stabilize the famous leaning tower. There have been many attempts in its 800-year history but this one was a race against time as the tower had already leaned on to a 5.5 degree whereas it had been projected that the tower would topple should it reach an angle of 5.44. It was a miracle that the tower was still standing but the crisis was still imminent.  

In the 12th century famous maritime town of Pisa, set about to turn its cathedral square to a magnificent landmark. So, in 1173, construction began on a free-standing campanile or bell tower and while the engineers and architects of the time were masters of their craft, they knew far less about the soil that they stood on. Pisa’s name had a Greek origin which meant “marshy land”, which clearly describes the clay, mud, and wet sand composition below the city’s surface. With a three-meter foundation to support the structure, it was no surprise that within less than five years the tower’s southern side began to sink beneath the surface. Such a mistake should normally have been a fatal flaw however, the construction halted for nearly a century while the tower was at the fourth story due to prolonged warfare that descended onto Pisa.  This long pause allowed the soil beneath the tower to settle and when the construction resumed in 1272, the workers saw the structure to be on slightly more stable ground. Under the guidance of architect Giovanni de Simone, the workers compensated the minor tilt by making the southern side slightly taller. But due to the extra weight of the masonry, the southern side continued to tilt even further. And by this time the tilt had increased to 1.6 degrees. For centuries engineers tried numerous strategies to address the lean, they even tried to dig a walkway to examine the sunken foundation but the removal of the supporting sand only worsened the problem, and thus with many such failed attempts all the engineers managed to do was worsen the ever-increasing tilt. However, in the years following WWII, researchers developed tests to examine the problem whereas, in 1970, engineers finally managed to calculate the center of gravity of the tower. Thus, with the modern tools at hand, the engineers could finally address the real problem and calculate different ways in order to stabilize the monument. They finally calculated the amount of excavation needed to stop the tilting of the monument and in 1992, a team drilled diagonal tunnels to remove 38 cubic meters of soil from underneath the tower’s north end, and temporarily balanced its weight with 600 tonnes of lead ingots and subsequently anchoring the base with steel cables. Thus, nearly six centuries after the completion of the tower, it had finally been straightened…to a tilt of about 4 degrees. The Italians didn’t want the tower to fall but they also didn’t want to lose the landmark’s most iconic feature. Today the tower stands at about 56 meters height and according to the estimates made by the engineers of the project, it should remain standing for another 300 years or so.

This is the tale of the monument that stands to show the beauty in imperfection. As Haruki Murakami wrote, “Don’t pointless things have a place too, in this far-from-perfect world”.

Story of Automotive fuels

Automotive fuels are broadly divided in to two categories. Motor gasoline which is used in spark ignition engines and High-speed diesel, used in compression ignition engines. Both these fuels are generally produced from crude oil.  There is an alternate raw material such as reformate from which this automotive fuel can be derived, however this intermediary is also product of crude oil distillation process. Natural gas is used as a feed in some refineries but limited to low scale production.

Petroleum Crude (Crude Oil)

Crude oil is mixture of comparatively volatile hydro carbons, compounds mainly composed of Hydrogen and Carbon. Hydro carbon in crude is mostly alkanes (Paraffins), cyclo-alkanes (Naphthenes) and various hydrocarbons. Other elements present are sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen and traces of metals such as Iron, nickel copper etc.

Crude is formed when large quantities of dead organisms are buried underneath sedimentary rock and undergo intense heat and pressure. Petroleum is recovered mostly through oil drilling. This comes after the studies of structural geology, sedimentary basin analysis, reservoir characterization.

Crude oil is refined and separated, most easily by boiling point, into large variety of consumer products, from petrol (or gasoline) and kerosene to asphalt and chemical reagents used to make plastics and pharmaceuticals.

Petroleum Industry

Petroleum industry is involved in exploration, production, storage, transportation and marketing of petroleum products. The major part product handled by the industry is Fuel Oil and petrol. These are the most widely used fuels around the world. Oil accounts for the largest part of energy consumption all over the world. Approximate oil consumption of the world is around 30 Billion barrels per year.

Upstream oil companies are engaged in exploration, production and refining activities. Down stream oil companies are their expertise in transportation and marketing of refined products. Few companies are engaged in both upstream as well as down stream activities due to their wide experience in the field. Marketing companies are closer to end customers as they have to develop strategy based on changing market requirements.

Refinery Process

Crude oil is subjected to destructive distillation for separating the constituents. The most common distillation fractions of petroleum crude are fuels.

The chemical structure of petroleum is heterogeneous. The chemical separated by distillation are treated by other chemical process for meeting various specification requirements and the customer needs.

Finished products are subjected to stringent laboratory tests to ensure they meets all specifications prescribed by the national and inter national agencies also the specific customer requirements before releasing from refinery.

Supply chain.

Refined products are stored in storage facilities designed based on capacity requirements. Products are transported by different modes based on market locations. Costal movement by oil tankers is preferred for long distance and exports. Pipeline transfer is used as safe and economical option. Rail and road modes are also used widely for transporting fuels. Product transported from refinery locations are stored at intermediate location after ensuring all safety and statutory requirements before finally being dispatched to retail outlets.

This was due to lack of proper information about the required material and operations which needed to be performed on them, and thus resulted in major losses. When we consider the building of airplanes,big buildings and ships especially in the initial phases, we do acknowledge various mistakes, sometimes in calculation and sometimes in the size and construction of the material. This was a serious issue in earlier days and scientists surely wanted to do this out so as to save their time and precious resources. 

The idea of prototyping and analysis came out to be a boon for scientists, manufacturers and customers.

  1. A prototype can be defined as a scaled model of the original object. This helps in reducing the loss of much if the material as well as money. Prototyping helps to make an original model of the product but as a small entity. Various aspects and parts which are estimated to be a part of the desired product are scaled sone to reduce its size. This is an effective technique used by most of the experts and scientists to figure out the final outcome of their product in a much cost effective way.
  2.  The other is the technique of Analysis and 3-d design modelling. This gives a glance of the final product and how it would look after it’s final outcome. This reduces time and more money and various tests can also be performed testing the rigidity, stress and strain graph, toughness and various other factors without making a model and testing on a machine. These have brought a significant change in the field of designing and has helped a number of new ideas to be born without much of expensive, material and technology. 

These do have helped us in our manufacturing production process but still have various drawbacks. The analysis and the results are easy to get but are not 100% correct, which  leaves us with a condition of doubt and work efficiency if the product . We do lack experienced people to work on this simulating softwares. Also these simulation and analysis software are much too expensive. But all these factors lie with the other practices also. These also need much investment to operate. Investment in these techniques are more as compared to others.

It is basically a preventive approach to food safety which is used to find and then eliminate the biological, chemical and physical hazards which may or may not be there in production processes and can cause the final products to be unsafe and unhealthy for human consumption. These are certain principles which have been designed by the government to ensure the food quality and safety. It is a various step process that is followed in any food industry.
The HACCP system is followed at each and every level of food chain i.e. in food production and preparation processes which also includes packaging, distribution and even consumption by the consumer. It is therefore known as FARM-TO-TABLE process.
This technique was originated by NASA in the 1960s and US food and drug administration gave a particular definition to this. The main objectives of the HACCP system are –

HOW TO CONDUCT A HACCP PLAN??????

PRINCIPLES OF HACCP
There are 7 main principles of conducting successfully a HACCP plan.

  1. To conduct a hazard analysis is the first step in which all the potential physical, chemical as well as biological hazards in the production of the product are identified.
  2. To determine all the critical control points (CCPs). At this step, all the control measures are thought to be applied. Basically at this step, those points are identified where control measures can be applied for the safety. This step is very essential to eliminate hazards completely from the product.
  3. To establish critical limits is the next step i.e. in this step the control measures are actually applied and also the maximum and minimum limits are set for the preventive measures. To each point found in the last step, a critical limit is applied. These limits assure the food safety.
  4. To establish monitoring procedures is the next step in which all the planning which was done yet is monitored and it should be done on a regular basis. This step assures that there is no mishandling of any procedure of the complete plan.
  5. To establish corrective actions is the next step in which appropriate correct actions are taken if after monitoring it is observed that the critical limits are not met. The corrective actions for each point and limit are already pre-decided.
  6. To establish verification procedures is the next and most important step in which the complete HACCP plan is validated. The complete verification of the plan is required to assure that the precautions and preventions are taken carefully.
  7. To maintain record keeping and documentation procedures is the final step in which the record is maintained and established which must be done regularly. It is necessary for validation procedures.

Swarm Of Locusts Reaches Gurugram, But Will They Enter Delhi?

Houses and trees were covered by locusts in some parts of Gurugram as the swarm continues to advance from west to east with steady wind.

A swarm of locusts, about 3 km in length, has hit Gurugram and it is flying across the city in the NCR region from west to east, according to officials.

The Gurugram administration is sounding sirens and blowing horns to make noises so that the locusts don’t settle on green vegetation and destroy them.

Besides, we have been spraying chemicals through vehicle-mounted pump sets in rural areas,” said Amit Khatri, Gurugram Deputy Commissioner (DC).

There is disagreement amid different administrations over whether the swarm will enter Delhi.

“They are flying across the city West to East due to the steady wind. They will most likely enter Delhi,” said Khatri.

Delhi Air Traffic Control (ATC) on Saturday directed pilots of all airlines to take necessary precautions during landing and take-off of aircraft in view of locust swarms seen near the airport in areas along Gurugram-Dwarka Expressway, news agency ANI reported. A team has been set up to monitor the situation.

However, KL Gujjar, deputy director, Plant Protection, Quarantine and Storage (PPQS), Faridabad, says that it is unlikely that they will reach Delhi because they are moving in East direction. PPQS comes under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and it is a nodal body to take locust control measures with its various sub-offices across the country.

“They have entered India from Pakistan through Jaisalmer and Barmer border area and reached Jhujhuna. From there, they travelled to Rewari. From Rewari, they came to Jhjhar and from there they have reached Gurugram. Now from here, they will fly to Faridabad and then considering the current wind direction they will move towards Palwal side. I don’t see that they will enter Delhi,” he said.

Meanwhile, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai called an emergency meeting to discuss the situation following a locust attack in Gurugram. The minister also directed the administration to be alert, an official said.

“After the emergency meeting, an advisory will be issued on steps to be taken to deal with the situation,” Rai told PTI.

He asked the officials of the Agriculture department to make field visits to areas close to Gurugram.

On Friday, Gurugram administration reportedly warned its residents about the attack, urging them to keep their windows shut as a precautionary measure. The administration also asked them to make clanging noise by beating utensils to repel the crop-eating insects.

The locust attack has ravaged parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and few other states for over a month.

Experts say that the present locust crisis that many Indian states are faced with is intense due to the younger population of the insect, swarms of which have entered the country from the north-west areas bordering Pakistan.

A young locust is far more dangerous for crops than a mature and older one. While the mature locusts cover shorter distances and focus more on breeding, the younger ones can fly 150 km in a day and devour more green vegetation.

Experts believe that the current locust invasion was part of the residue population that survived after February 17, 2020, in the deserts of Pakistan and Iran. After 1993, for the first time on May 22, 2019, large swarms of locusts invaded areas bordering Pakistan. Locust controlling units thought that they could finish them by the end of October 2019 but the invasion continued till early February 2020.

“On February 17, 2020, we either killed all the locusts or forced them to go across the border in Pakistan and Iran. We stopped our locust control measures and expected that Pakistan and Iran would take similar measures to eliminate them. But somehow, the residue population continued breeding and in April they attacked,” said Dr Rajesh Kumar, Plant Protection Officer, Jaisalmer.

Intrinsic factors affecting the growth of microorganisms in food

There are various types of interactions between microorganisms and other living organisms. These interactions are natural, constant and also play a significant role in maintaining the ecological balance and stability of the biogeochemical cycle of the nature. Mostly, the food products we consume are obtained from plants and animals and also these foods are rich in variety of microorganisms which may or may not be pathogenic to humans. Growth of microorganisms in food depends on various different parameters which can be broadly classified as INTRINSIC and EXTRINSIC factors.
INTRINSIC FACTORS –
These are the factors that are present in the food substance in which the microorganism is growing, or it may be said as the internal factors of that particular food substrate. Various intrinsic factors are-

  1. Hydrogen Ion Concentration – All the microorganisms have minimal, maximal, or optimal pH for their growth and survival. Thus, the growth of microorganisms in food is affected by the pH of the food material. Foods may be classified as low pH or high pH foods. Most fruits, fermented foods come under high acid foods whereas most vegetables, meat, fish and milk are low acid foods. pH range of different microorganisms are :
    • Molds – 1.5-9.0
    • Yeasts – 2.0-8.5
    • Gram-positive bacteria – 4.0-8.5
    • Gram-negative bacteria – 4.5-9.0
  2. Water activity or moisture content – Water activity can be defined as the measure of availability of water present in any substance which can be used for biological functions and it also gives an idea of free water present in any food product. Water is an excellent requirement for microorganism for their growth. It has been observed and noted that the water activity of fresh food substances is 0.99. Also bacteria require more water activity i.e. free water in any food substrate for their growth than molds and yeasts. If specifically studied, it will be observed that gram-negative bacteria have relatively higher water requirements than gram-positive bacteria. Free water in any food substance is an essential requirement for the growth of microorganisms. Water activity of any food can be reduced by various absorption techniques to reduce the affect of spoilage by microorganisms.
  3. Redox Potential – Redox potential can be defined as the reducing and oxidizing power of food and it also greatly influences the growth of microorganisms in food. The concentration of oxygen present in any food sample determines the type of microorganism that will grow in it. Like, aerobic microbes require the oxygen whereas anaerobic microbes can also grow in lack of oxygen. So, it can be said aerobes grow at positive O-R potential whereas anaerobes grow at negative O-R potential.
  4. Composition of nutrients – Food composition is also an another intrinsic factor which influences the growth of microorganisms in food. There are 5 major nutrients group which are counted i.e. carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins and minerals, amount of each varies with the type of food and so the type and growth of microorganisms. Bacteria require the most nutrient requirement than yeasts and molds. Microorganisms utilize large complex nutrient molecules and convert them into smaller molecules. For e.g. there are some proteolytic bacteria which acts on proteins and hydrolyze it. Also some microbes convert lipids into glycerol with the help of an enzyme lipase. Some microorganisms which require vitamins for their growth are called as fastidious microorganisms.
  5. Inhibitory substances – There are a number of inhibitory substances that are present in foods by their origin which naturally prevent the growth of microorganisms in them. For e.g. some plants contain essential oils possessing antimicrobial properties. Milk also contains several antimicrobials like lactoferrin, conglutinin, etc.
  6. Biological structures – The natural structure of some foods have the remarkable excellence in controlling the entry as well as the growth of microorganisms in or on them. It can be noted as the natural covering of some foods which prevents the entry of microbes. So, the inner parts of the healthy tissues are sterile and possess very less microbial count. For e.g. skin of egg, rind on fruits, etc.

Electrified Fabric Could Zap the Coronavirus on Masks and Clothing

Wearing masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) can slow the spread of COVID-19. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone wear some kind of face covering in public places, especially where social distancing is difficult to maintain. And health workers are donning additional coverings, such as gowns. Yet all such protective gear shares one significant problem: people still risk becoming infected with the novel coronavirus if they accidentally touch areas of the fabric that are contaminated with viral particles. So researchers are working to develop cloth that could inactivate or repel coronaviruses—ideally including the one that causes COVID-19—and other pathogens.

People transfer infectious particles to their hands if they touch the front of a mask during use or when they remove gowns or other PPE, according to Chandan Sen, director of the Indiana Center for Regenerative Medicine and Engineering at Indiana University. He and his colleagues have been developing a way to render those particles and other infectious agents harmless. The team researches “electroceutical” materials that wirelessly “generate electric fields across the surface of the fabric,” Sen says. Those fields can disrupt the behavior of bacteria or viruses on the cloth.

“The beauty of this [technology] is the inherently simple design,” he says. The polyester material is printed with alternating spots of silver and zinc resembling polka dots. They are one to two millimeters wide and spaced one millimeter apart. When the electroceutical material is dry, it functions as an ordinary fabric. But if it gets dampened—say, with saliva, vapor from a coughed up droplet or other bodily fluids—ions in the liquid trigger an electrochemical reaction. The silver and zinc then generate a weak electric field that zaps pathogens on the surface.

The researchers co-developed the material with the biotechnology company Vomaris Innovations in 2012. Last year they showed that the technology could be used to treat bacterial biofilms in wounds. A clinical trial is underway to further evaluate the fabric’s effectiveness as a Food and Drug Administration–cleared dressing for wound care, Sen says.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sen’s team tested its existing material on a different coronavirus strain that causes a respiratory illness in pigs and on an unrelated type of pathogen called a lentivirus. “We wanted to know how broadly this principle could be applicable,” he says. In a study posted on the preprint server ChemRxiv in May, Sen’s team reported that its electroceutical fabric destabilized both viruses, leaving them unable to infect cells. The researchers plan to submit the results to a peer-reviewed journal as well.

To study the fabric’s action, they placed a liquid solution containing viral particles onto the electroceutical fabric and a polyester control fabric without the metal dots. After the droplets were fully absorbed, and the samples had rested for one to five minutes, the researchers recovered viral particles from both fabrics and tested whether they could still infect the types of cells they typically target.

“The data presented here show that, of the total virus that was recovered, a significant percentage was inactivated,” says Jeff Karp, a professor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and co-leader of an N95 respirator working group at the Massachusetts General Brigham Center for COVID Innovation. Karp, who was not involved with the study, adds that the researchers did not test all of the virus that they had placed on the cloth. “In fact, the majority of virus was not recovered from the textiles examined in this study,” he says. Sen responds that his team focused on sampling only enough viral particles to show that the fabric had rendered them unable to infect cells. The researchers recovered roughly 44 percent of the particles from the electroceutical fabric samples that had rested for one minute. And they retrieved 24 percent of them from the samples that had rested for five minutes.

The material’s virus-fighting abilities have not been tested specifically on SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The researchers’ findings with the two viruses they studied, however, gave them “hope that this could apply more widely,” Sen says. He adds that large-scale manufacturing of the electroceutical fabric is already possible and that the costs of producing it are relatively low. The metal dots could be printed directly onto the front surfaces of masks, he suggests. Or an electroceutical fabric could be inserted between the front of a mask and the wearer’s face.

If a virus-stopping PPE material were widely available, it could limit the novel coronavirus’s ability to spread. “There is a huge unmet need to better understand modes of viral transfer that lead to virus transmission,” Karp says. “As we develop a better understanding of this, there is a huge immediate need to develop and quickly apply solutions that can reduce transmission.”

Metal dots are not the only potential approach. Paul Leu, director of an advanced materials laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh, and his colleagues are developing a textile coating that repels bodily fluids, proteins and bacteria. It also repels one strain of adenovirus that causes respiratory illness and another that causes conjunctivitis, as reported in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces in April. Leu’s team has also not tested the material with the novel coronavirus itself, however. “The main thing with testing [the coating on] SARS-CoV-2 is the biosafety level you need to test it, because it’s very hazardous,” he says. Still, his team plans to see how well textiles with this coating repel a different coronavirus.

Leu says the coating, which remains repellent even after ultrasonic washing and scraping with a razor blade, could make PPE safer for wearers to take off. It could also be used on hospital bed linens, drapes and waiting room chairs, the researchers note in the study. But Leu points out that the coating is intended for use with medical textiles that are already considered reusable. His team has not tested it on single-use masks or N95s, but he thinks it could potentially damage them. Still, he says, the coating could work well for cloth masks such as those now being worn by many among the general public.

By developing materials that kill or repel viruses, researchers hope to make masks and other protective gear safer to remove and more effective against all viruses. “If the common person were to have PPE that wouldn’t spread infection,” Sen says, “I think that’s a big, big deal.”
