Food Pollution.

We, human beings are vulnerable to various types of pollution. And Food is one of the most significant things we need to survive in this world. So, if the food we consume becomes polluted then what are the chances for us to stay healthy? Food Pollution over time has become a topic of concern, so let’s have look at it.

What is Food Pollution?

Food Pollution is defined as the presence of toxic chemicals (elements or compounds) or biological contaminants which are not naturally present in food or are above their natural background level (for those chemicals which are naturally found in some foods).

What are the effects of Food Pollution?

Food Pollution can affect us by causing mild to moderate to severe food illness and it can also cause various health issues like hormonal and metabolic imbalance, and even various types of cancer. Certain pesticides present in the food can also cause Nervous System problems. Further, in few cases, highly polluted food can cause immediate food poisoning or even death. Approximately, more than 70 million cases of food-borne diseases occur alone in the U.S. every year, resulting in 5,000 deaths per year.

What are the causes of Food Pollution?

There are several causes of Food Pollution. Practically, any pollutant has the potential to pollute food just by coming in contact with it.  And vegetables can get polluted by bacterial problems which can only be destroyed by processing the contaminated food at high temperatures. Let’s have a look at situations where toxic chemicals can get into the food:-

★ consumption of polluted water and/or food by fish or other animals;

★ food processing, packaging, and handling;

★ propagation and concentration of pollutants through the food chain;

★ growing of food (e.g. crops, fruits, vegetables) in polluted soils, solid wastes (e.g. mine tailings), or areas with polluted groundwater;

★ irrigation of grown food (e.g. vegetables, fruits, crops) with polluted water;

★ growing of food (e.g. crops, fruits, vegetables) in areas with polluted air;

★ agricultural treatments with pesticides, insecticides, and/or herbicides;

★ agricultural application of sewage sludge and/or polluted fertilizers (which contain ash from power plants).

Safe Food Alternative

Japan has come up with an alternative for producing safe food, according to which vegetables should be grown in factories that terminate the unpredictable effect of environmental pollution, unpredictable weather, or pests. Also, the process would be all computerized that would control various factors affecting growth. This idea of a safe food alternative was given by OZU cooperation in Tokyo. Can this be the way of future agriculture? Well, this we’ll see.

Hazards of Food Pollution are everywhere and all can be done on an individual level is; by informing ourselves and taking action.

Dr. Death (2021)|Review| A completely chilling series

Who is Dr. Death? How did he come to be? How did he continue practicing medicine despite hurting a terrifying number of patients? This series unfolded politics with an operating room, hospitals, and law.

A real-life story about a doctor who maimed and killed his patient relentlessly and without guilt.

Plot:

The story revolves around Christopher Duntsch, a former neurosurgeon who “Intentionally” maimed and even killed his patients. His two fellow colleagues and a prosecutor Michelle Shughart’s journey to stop him and bring justice. The drama miniseries is based on the podcast(by Wondery), with the same name, which covered his heinous crime.

Release date: 15 July 2021

No. of episodes: 8

Network: Peacock

Genre: True Crime

Writer(s): Patrick Macmanus

Executive producers: Jason Blumthal, Marshall Lewy, Steve tisch and more.

Running time: 43-60 minutes.

Let’s start with introduction of characters and their stories!

Christopher Duntsch aka DR. Death or Dr. D.

From the start, it is very obvious that he is a very obnoxious, extremely narcissist with God complex ( someone who thinks they has been divinely blessed or has an exceptional talent compared to everyone else, that they can perform risks to save someone’s life because they can’t make mistakes. Even if they do make mistakes they can either miraculously correct them or it is the fault of people around them which they then discard to take action upon) and who is in denial of his abilities.

“I don’t have complications”, “The attending interrupted which distracted me”, “I can leave kindness and become a stone-cold killer, and the way he slammed every doctor’s procedure to prove his way of surgery screams an insane amount of sociopath vibes and terrifying negligence. These were some of the red flags

He has said to have performed 37 surgeries, out of which 33 have intense complications and some dead. A neurosurgeon who brags about educational accomplishment all the time, doesn’t accept the existence of human error

Roles Portrayed:

Each and every actor portrayed their roles excellently. You could feel their irritation and anger radiating through the screens. Patient’s nervousness, excitement, desperation makes you imagine yourself to be in their or their loved one’s situation. The nonchalance of Duntsch ( By Joshua Jackson), his ability to use charm and threats to remain a doctor and get selected in other hospitals infuriates you to the bone. Dr. Robert Henderson’s (Alex Baldwin) immeasurable patience and Dr. Randall Kirby’s (Christian Slater)relatable impatience and anger take you on a rollercoaster ride.

Review:

The show starts with his patients at Dallas Medical. 3 days, 3 patients. One dead, one woken with extreme pain and no mobility in legs, and one is said to be recovering.  Dr. Robert Henderson had to perform a revision surgery on Madeleine Beyer, who woke up with extreme pain. During surgery he found out that there were many holes which were from the attempted attachment of screws, her fragments of bone dispersed and piercing main nerves. He wonders what did Duntsch do to her since her bones were completely shattered.

Through his course in Dallas, his circulating nurse, Josh Baker(Hobert Point-Du) consults and preps his OR. He is concerned about Duntsch as well as his patients. He questions and tries to protect patients. You get to see how nurses and everyone else except the doctor is treated with so little respect. Their voice of concern went not only unheard but also was looked upon as an interruption. Although one can understand that surgery is complex and doubts by people around us is effective, but in this scenario, the patients lost around 1700-2000 CC’s of blood and the nurses decided to voice their opinion. How can this be disregarded and the voices getting unheard? How can continuing to operate while a patient is hemorrhaging be ignored when these issues were brought to the Texas Medical Board? How is aggressively asking for a procedure like a craniotomy in a hospital where craniotomy is not performed (SO, they won’t have any instruments to do that and to counteract if it goes wrong isn’t there) okay when the situation could have been handled by simply transferring the patient to another hospital? It clearly shows that his intent was either to cover up his harm and to show doctorly care by performing a procedure

While writing the plot, I preferred to choose “Intentionally” since trained doesn’t just mean only that a superior/ attending is responsible for imparting knowledge. The learner/ resident has the equal responsibility to learn and practice what they have been taught. It also means that an attending, as well as a resident themselves, recognize what are they capable of and what are their limitations since it is someone’s life we are talking about. Just like Kayla Gibson said, he should have stuck to research.

Intentionally, because it is no wonder he knew he doesn’t know how to operate and yet he went on to shut everyone off and to continue operating the way he thought was right, i.e. recklessly treating his patients as mere Guinea pigs with little to no regard to human anatomy.

The series had me completely hooked till the end. Waiting for someone to listen to them, wanting to help them even it took place long back, feeling for each character since they seemed so genuine. I hated Duntsch and how calmly he dealt with everything. I hated how he easily went up the food chain and be unscathed. Joshua’s acting got me for real.

Well, let’s look at it objectively. Before, During and After. ( Spoilers ahead, if you haven’t seen the series completely)

He “compassionately” tells his patient about how not getting done a surgery could lead to what-nots, boats about degrees to nervous family members, wears the same scrubs with holes to operations. Then, during surgery, he erratically operates, slices through a vertebral artery takes a piece out of the esophagus, damaged vocal cords, intends to remove a disc but in the end, doesn’t even go near it, and perform surgery around the disc. Keeps asking for more follow-up to perform surgeries. But, would never check up on a patient, ignore their calls, and completely abandon them. He even operates on his best friend leaving him quadriplegia, blames others, and abandons him.

Dr. Kirby and his childlike behavior gets me since that’s how most of us would feel in the moment. The face of disbelief he carried all the way is remarkable.

To imagine that he would be still practicing medicine if his colleagues hadn’t reported and taken every measure to stop him, it is truly horrifying to imagine how many more lives he would have destroyed.

Note:

I applaud each and everyone who took a step against him and try to mend the system which is so broken. This series was so well made. The storyline was continuous, his behavioral relation between present and past, coldness, and the lives he affected out of surgery world; everything was so well thought and executed.

Seeing the series, might help you understand the world of surgery.

Although, the negativity of Dr. D is the main focus, we can always believe that there good doctors out there and we can ourselves support good ones and protect ourselves from Dr. D by asking questions regarding procedures and not being afraid to listen to our hesitation. Don’t let people like Duntsch affect other doctors whose only intention to save lives and help people. Do not get discouraged to reach out to medical care and do everything in our power to treat ourselves and our loved ones. Just remember to ask, have an open mind to all kinds of people, and be mentally prepped to go for treatments.

Gender Incongruence

Introduction

When you discover your state of gender incongruence, every therapist you meet will ask you the same question – when did you know? How did you know? Now, we know what they want; they’d perhaps like to find some deeply ingrained personal hurt, some evidence of pathos, symptoms and signs pointing toward a diagnosis. But what if you first felt gender incongruent when you discerned that your father was somehow never meant to cry? The realization that the most intense emotion he ever portrayed was rage? What if you felt gender incongruent when you got into classroom fist fights you really didn’t want anything to do with? A lot of transfeminine people/trans women will tell you they feel far more emotionally labile when beginning Oestrogen.

Advocacy

Pharmacology aside, I hypothesize that much of it is a visceral disinhibition, the opening of a floodgate, a downpour of everything any human being should be able to feel – only, the privilege of being able to feel is restricted in society. Apparent masculinity comes with great privilege in a patriarchy. They try to toughen up, they hide the playground hurt, they hold sorrow in excruciating lumps in our throats, because they’d like some of that privilege, they’d like safety, they’d like not to be harassed, molested, assaulted. Eventually, they realize that the feigning comes at a cost too great, and they go about resolving the incongruence to become our truest selves. The psychiatrist wants to hear about the distress in not being able to wear pink, play with Barbie Dolls. But I think what we don’t want to hear is that we as a society create the incongruence – we disallow the natural and call it anomalous. They will never know what it is like to live in a society that teaches its men that they may feel just as intensely. That they may cry when hurt. That they may be hurt. That they may be sexually assaulted, that they may experience psychological distress. It’s possible that a less stringently gendered world would result in less intense gender dysphoria. Personalities like Laxmi Narayan Tripathi are trying to tell us exactly that. I truly believe that a less stringently gendered world would mean healthier people, families, societies, nations.

Domestic violence during the pandemic

Domestic violence during the Covid pandemic is a major concern which indicates the negative psychological and social impact of the pandemic on our society. Countries all over the globe, have reported alarmingly high number of cases of violence faced in the households.

Domestic violence

It refers to any sort of physical, sexual or emotional violence by a partner or any other family member. Women are the primary victims of this sort of violence. It is a crime according to section 498A of the Indian Penal Code. The Government of India had passed the ‘Protection of women from domestic violence act’ in 2005.

Impact of the pandemic

Cases of violence have increased with the rise of Covid-19 pandemic. The National Commission for Women(NCW) received 13,410 complaints of crime against women between March- September, 2020. Out of the complaints received, 4350 were about the problem of domestic violence. Not only in India, but a rise in cases were seen globally. According to a report by the UN in 2020, 243 million women and girls were subjected to domestic violence worldwide.

A drastic rise in cases were seen, even when many of the cases go unreported due to the social stigma attached to it. Research shows that violence tends to increase in conditions of any crisis or disaster. A similar rise in cases of violence in households was seen during the Ebola outbreak between 2014-2020.

Causes of increase in violence

The pandemic has led to quarantine in many of the countries, it has completely changed the day to day lifestyle of the people. The pandemic has restricted the movement and confined people to their house. It has also economically impacted people with a rise in unemployment and other losses. This has contributed to psychological distress among the people.

Unfortunately the stress, anger and frustration has culminated into violence in some households. There is also a lack of social support or protective network for the victim because of isolation inside the house. Many find it difficult to access timely help or intervention in these situations.

Solutions

The first and foremost step is to make people aware about it and give them proper knowledge to access help. Most of the survivors have limited information about seeking justice against violence. Many of them hesitate to speak up or register a complaint. Under-reporting of cases is a major problem. Surveys show that only 7% of the victims reach out for help. In such conditions legitimate information and awareness plays a crucial role in raising voice against the crime. Building an easily accessible community support system for the victims and giving them psycho-social support is another important step.

Various social media campaigns have helped to make support accessible in the times of Covid-19. Often youngsters have actively involved themselves in such awareness campaigns. Recently, NCW had launched a Whatsapp based helpline to ease the process during the pandemic. Some state governments had also started different initiatives like tele-counselling programmes for women. The UN had also launched the ‘Shadow pandemic public awareness campaign’ to raise awareness about the increasing violence.

Domestic violence is a social evil which needs to be eradicated for the betterment of our society.

TRANSGENDER PERSONS (PROTECTION OF RIGHTS) RULES (2021)

The Introduction

1. The government of India has already pushed and continues to push the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019 and Rules, 2020 as an extraordinarily progressive thing. However, that’s not true.

2. The Rules describing how the Act would be implemented were rolled out for consultation in the middle of a nationwide lockdown, when the trans community was extraordinarily vulnerable and continues to be. Draft Rules were published thrice, the third time being on 25th September, 2020.

3. The community has protested the Act ever since it was a Bill in 2016 for several reasons – poor definition of trans people, reduced sentencing for our rape, no horizontal reservation, criminalizing begging (major income source) and most starkly, the complete absence of the right to self determine your own gender as guaranteed by NALSA vs UoI, a Supreme Court Judgement.

4. The 2016 Bill proposed a District Screening Committee that would screen trans bodies (degree of invasiveness not specified) before allowing them to self identify. This committee was done away with in later versions of the Bill, but the spirit of screening via District Magistrate remains even today, just less invasively. ONLY AFTER sex reassignment surgery, regardless, would you be entitled to the markers ‘male’ or ‘female’, completely disregarding that surgery is expensive and inaccessible to most of the community. Further, surgery doesn’t determine gender. Surgery is a personal choice.

Conclusive Points

5. Over the years, the community protested vehemently against all of the above. No one gets to denude and degrade us to “check” or “screen” our genders for us. Gender identity can be determined by no one but yourself.

6. Extensive, tireless feedback from the community has FINALLY been taken seriously to undo a lot of the damage the Act and Rules could have done. You’ll no longer need surgery before being entitled to binary markers, but you’ll have to provide some proof of medical intervention (includes anything from counselling to surgery). Better than before, but still, nothing to celebrate.

What is a Wagering Contract?

When we talk about contracts, we come across many different sorts of types of contracts, such as quasi-contracts, implied contracts, expressed contracts, and many more. Wagering Contracts are one form of contract. A wagering contract is one in which two essential parties enter into a contract and in which the first party promises to pay a certain quantity of money to the second party if a certain event occurs in the future and the second party agrees to compensate the first party if that event does not occur. The presence of two parties who are of sound mind to benefit or lose is the essential foundation of a wagering arrangement. In layman’s terms, a Wager is a bet or a gamble. The phrase wager refers to betting in its most fundamental sense. Section 30 of the Indian Contract Act expressly states that wagering agreements are invalid. The section was structured as follows:

Carlill vs. Carbolic Smoke Ball Co. (1993): This is the first case law that has described a wagering contract in the most explicit and comprehensive manner. It is written as follows:

“One by which two persons professing to hold opposing views on the issue of a future uncertain event mutually agree that, depending on the determination of that event, one shall win from the other, and that other shall pay or hand over to him, a sum of money or other stake; neither of the parties having any other interest in that contract than the sum or stake he will win or lose.” It is not a wagering contract if any party can win but cannot lose or can lose but cannot win.”

As a result, all wagering agreements are contingent agreements, but not all contingent agreements are wagering agreements. Thus, in layman’s terms, a wagering contract is a futures contract that is dependent on the occurrence of a certain event in the future. Depending on the conditions in the future, a wagering contract may or may not be implemented.

HISTORY OF LAW RELATED TO THE CONCEPT OF WAGER:

Since the beginning of time, when there were instances in British India, the law governing wagers was common law in England, but in 1848, the Wagers Avoiding Act came into effect. Previously, it was thought that any wagering activity may be upheld if it did not violate the emotional emotions of a third party and was not contrary to public policy. When we consider the notion of gambling and betting, we know that this type of activity existed in our nation from ancient times, but it was not accepted in England and was shunned. These sorts of acts are prohibited and are not protected by the purview of our Indian constitution under Article 19 or Article 301 since they are not expressly listed in the Indian Contract Act or Hindu law in general.

TYPES OF WAGER:

  1. Moneyline Betting:

This is one of the most straightforward kinds of betting. Money line betting is relatively easy because it is only done on sports contests and games and is only centred on the outcome/result of the match. This form of betting is illegal, and it is most prevalent in cricket, particularly in the Indian Premier League.

2. Spread Betting:

This sort of wager/betting occurs when the person making the bet on the most favoured team competing in the match to win by a specific margin or on the team considered as the underdog to win or even if it loses by a very tight margin.

3. Over Betting:

This form of betting is done in a game where the better places his wager on the total number of points earned or total number of goals scored by both sides through a combination of a specific number and which is completely a speculative event over which no one has control.

4. Under Betting:

This type of betting takes place when the better places his bet on the condition that the combination of the total number of goals and pints that are scored by both the teams will be less or under a certain limit. This type of wager is also related to the final outcome of the game.

5. Prop Betting:

This type of betting is very unique and creative in nature because it is unrelated to the game’s final outcome. In this case, the better bets on something like the first half of the game or whether there will be a super over in a cricket match, for example. As a result, this is also known as prop betting.

ESSENTIALS OF A WAGERING CONTRACT:

  1. Equal opportunity:

One of the most important aspects of a wagering contract is that both parties have an equal probability of winning or losing based on the result of the future event.

2. Uncontrollable:

These are hypothetical occurrences that may or may not occur, and they should be beyond the power of either side, since if any party has influence over it, it is not a wager.

3. No Outside Interest:

Both parties should have a single interest in the event’s profit or loss, and there should be no outside or personal interest associated with the uncertain occurrence, since this will also not amount to wager.

4. Dependency:

The wager agreement is entirely reliant on the outcome of the projected event, whether it be compared to the past, present, or future.

5. Promise:

The wager contract should include an important provision stating that the parties commit to pay the money or money’s value to the other party if the event occurs, and this should be agreed upon by both parties.

Is online classes beneficial for kids:

Corona pandemic has affected each facet of human life as well as kids. Whether or not it’s the mental state, physical health or a mixture of each – the kids have had their own share of health issues throughout this pandemic section.
There’s a decent aspect to on-line categories and a nasty aspect too. Faculties that are able to offer participating on-line categories beside co-scholastic activities and regular peer-to-peer interaction have seen higher mental state among students. For others, it’s become monotonous, that has crystal rectifier to an increase in anxiety and disorder among kids.

“Many kids became uninterested in on-line categories. In sure faculties, on-line categories are terribly monotonous. Hence, what these students do is switch off the camera and do alternative activities. It’s sort of a time pass for them. Not solely mental state, however they are additionally facing some health issues like Increasing visual modality issues with frequent headaches are attributed to prolonged screen time. Additionally, increasing anxiety and depression thanks to home confinement beside sleep disorders also are on the increase. Besides, sports education and extracurricular categories have additionally stopped. As most of the fogeys are operating and also the kid is on their own within the house, there’s no means the kids will act with anyone,”

Loss of motivation and a way of self-discipline required to check on-line are a number of the main struggles that kids face. A college room provides a structure Associate in Nursing an atmosphere of effective learning that learning reception lacks. This ensures a cycle for college students troubled to complete their assignments, resulting in an absence of motivation and lower goals for themselves.
In addition thereto, a room and interaction with peers are important within the faculty years It provides students with a neutral atmosphere for social interactions that aids in developing skills like setting boundaries, learning cooperation, and sympathy. These skills are very vital for building social relationships as a baby however additionally as Associate in Nursing adult.

The impact of on-line categories is a reason for concern for several folks. However with the proper web, these students will simply overcome the challenges expose by on-line learning. Whereas the case is extremely worrying, it’s what the present state of affairs imply. Folks will support their kids by actively listening, making new routines that make a sense of sure thing in Associate in Nursing unsure world and nurturing shallowness and self-care by taking part in, talking and intake with them.

All of those lessons are leaned through peer interaction. Early poor social adjustment is shown to steer to tutorial struggles presently, a negative perception of the college atmosphere, and even ultimate tutorial failure .

This chance to develop social skills is even additional vital for college students with disabilities and activity difficulties, with positive interactions resulting in marked will increase in their motivation and performance. If students are collaborating in on-line learning, then, they’re going to expertise clearly less peer interaction, probably resulting in poorer tutorial and social skills.

Despite this dire image, however, studies additionally show that the academic-social interaction is reciprocal, with high tutorial performance resulting in additional positive social skills. Specifically, studies have shown that actively operating to extend the educational performance of kids early in their faculty careers, through interventions like mathematics and reading tutoring, will result in positive social development .This suggests that the shortage of peer interaction in on-line education might not be thus harmful finally. In fact, if these programs specialise in high accomplishment, social development could merely follow on.
In traditional circumstances, students of all ages are familiar with compounding and networking with their peers on a each day, making a broader social context to their studies that is way tougher to foster once everyone seems to be physically separated and needed to be told on-line.

Likewise, educators United Nations agency don’t have any selection however to deliver lessons remotely don’t have the chance to create the sorts of connections with their pupils, nor to bolster their learning within the means they might within the room.

If left ungoverned, a complete generation of tykes can be prevented from developing the social and emotional skills required to thrive later in life.
This is wherever a proactive approach to endeavour this drawback is smart. A growing range of establishments ar deploying social emotional learning programs as a part of a course of study that aims to nurture social skills like sympathy and emotional expression, and additionally facilitate with alternative areas, like goal-setting and leadership.

If you’re finding yourself answering ‘no’ to these questions, it might be time to take a hard look at the way you’ve been designing and optimizing your website.

A website truly excels when it has a design that feeds into your website’s user experience, functionality, and appropriately complements your content.

It can be super easy to neglect these things, thinking these updates are the lowest thing to worry about on your totem pole of website priorities, but a successful website has both high performing content and an exceptional user experience needs to have balance.

But the umbrella of website user experience has a lot under it, and it can be challenging to understand all that’s under it while figuring out the most important things to tackle.

To answer that, here are 12 website tips to ensure that you’re going in the right direction in your redesign and are assuring you aren’t turning visitors away.

1. Have a plan for your website design

Now that you’ve acknowledged that your site likely needs some improvements, it’s time to work your way backward and create a plan detailing how you’ll tackle them.

Start by mapping out your customer journey from the first time someone visits your website to the moment they become a customer. When doing this, think about which pages are they going to view, what content are they going to read, and what offers are they going to convert on. Understanding this will help you design a site that actually helps nurture leads through the sales funnel.

Certain elements on your website are going to detract from the value and message you’re trying to convey. Complicated animations, content that’s too long, and “stocky” website images are just a few examples.

With an audience that only has an attention span of eight seconds, you need to make it abundantly clear what your user will learn on the page they’re viewing and your design must not detract from this.

This starts with making sure you have consistent brand guidelines you can work off of.

This should detail your font styles, colors, imagery, iconography, and logo usage. Without this, it’s easy for brands to struggle when designing pages. You’ll likely start to see arbitrary colors and varying font styles and sizes used, which in turn, can distract from your message or create visual confusion for people trying to convert. It’s also important to avoid too many on-page animations or interactions. If you’re scrolling through a page and see every button pulsing or a section of icons each with its own animation, it can feel overwhelming and distract them from reading what’s on the page.

Let’s take a look at the website below as an example. Note, since I’m treating this as more of a critique, I’m removing the brand’s logo from the image so they can remain more anonymous. When looking at this site, the first thing I noticed was the colors

2. SEO Optimisation

Second, there are some areas of inconsistent spacing. The hanger in the hello bar (‘you!’) creates a second line that could easily be fixed if the width of the container around the text was increased. The H1 also isn’t exactly vertically centered in the white area, drawing your eye to “issue” rather than the bulk of the message.

In the grey section below the header, they lead with a button (which doesn’t have much context) and feels sandwiched on top of an image. As a user, I’m left to wonder if it’s supposed to have space below, or, if it’s supposed to directly relate to the image. Did the site just load incorrectly? This internal debate creates friction and confusion Details like this really help make or break your overall website experience and help your users better understand what you want them to do, leaving less room for confusion

3. Add social proof

If you shop like most people when you’re on Amazon, chances are you gravitate towards products that contain mostly four to five-star reviews from people who wrote out their experiences with a product.

In looking at these reviews, we gain trust in the product that it will do what it promises and we need it to do, which in turn, pushes us to purchase it.

The same effect is applied to your product or service and website. If users see impactful testimonials from real people, studies show your prospects are 58% more likely to buy your product

But how should your testimonials visually look so they effectively create that trust with your users when they see them?

Well, there are a few strategies you can take. But first, you need to think about what format of testimonial you want, text or video. Historically, video testimonials have been found to be the best. This is because the medium naturally keeps your user’s attention for longer and also builds a stronger human connection being able to hear voices and see faces of real people.

You also have the option of text testimonials, however, which, when designed and incorporated properly, will still help build trust with your users. Upland Adestra is an enterprise email and marketing automation software company in the United Kingdom. They have four videos on their  testimonial page that each are contained in their own sections. Rather than arbitrarily place all the videos next to each other, Upland separated them and accompanied them with a header and sentence detailing the result or benefit the client had working with them. Now, users have context to what they will hear about in the videos. I also like how a few of the videos show thumbnails of someone talking, which visually reassures the user that they will likely be hearing from the client themselves, as opposed to watching a text-based video.

Zenefits has done a great job of this on their website  Each card is designed with an image that showcases members of that company, which is way more trustworthy than if they were to use stock photos, or just a picture of their logo. And because they have five pages of testimonials, they’ve added a filter at the top of the page that allows users to segment what types of industries or solutions to look for. Now, users can find the types of case studies they want faster.  Finally, if your site only has text testimonials without case studies, there are aspects you need to be mindful about when designing them out. For instance, you can’t just put a set of text testimonials and a name alone. It’s less likely these will be taken as truth since it will leave users wondering what company they work for, what their job title is, and visibly what this person looks like (for visual confirmation that this person is likely real). In their case, they use tweeted reviews, but you can easily supplement this layout with something not using a Twitter feed   Regardless of them coming from Twitter, this section gets a bunch of things right. One, there’s a large number of reviews that can be seen at once thanks to the interest-styled layout. Secondly, the testimonials include photos and people/company names, making the reviews are that much more legitimate. When it comes to places to include testimonials on your website, I always recommend your homepage, service pages, and/or on a dedicated testimonial page that you include in your navigation. Each of these pages is the best touchpoint for people who are either learning about your company and considering buying. So long as they are genuine, testimonials will better your website’s experience and build trust with your prospects before they become clients

4. Implement calls-to-action

Once your visitors land on your site (likely through the blog or home page), you need to guide them to places on your website that will help nurture them to conversion. People are lazy, so make this easy for them. Point them in the right direction so they don’t have to struggle to find what they are looking for. One of the best ways to improve your web design with this in mind to use strategically placed call-to-actions in areas such as the top right of your navigation, below sections that require action, and at the bottom of your website pages.

5. Use the right stock images

We always recommend using original photography on your website, but if that’s not an option, there are techniques you can use to help pick out the right type of stock photo. While stock photos save you the time of producing your own imagery, many websites have imagery that falls into cliche. You’ll also find a lot of other websites may be showcasing the same imagery, which certainly doesn’t help for your credibility. So, when choosing stock photos, try to stay away from these cheesy images. These are the photos of people high-fiving with over-exaggerated smiles, groups looking at the camera, executives in superhero costumes, groups of suited people jumping in the air   When was the last time you saw people in these scenarios in real life? Look instead for photos that depict realistic scenes in well-lit environments. This could be people in an office talking over a meeting table in business casual clothing, over-the-shoulder shots of people typing on a laptop, people drawing on a whiteboard in an open room. These are the types of scenes others will start to recognize as legitimate. Look for candid images and ones in real-life settings rather than studios. This will aid in bringing more realism to your brand and making sure the images match who you are and what your content is explaining   You can also check out this article for some awesome stock photo website suggestions if you find yourself struggling with getting more realistic photography on your website. Being more mindful with your photography will help better represent your brand and how you want others to perceive it.

6. Organized navigation

When designing your website, navigation is key. It’s essentially the map that displays the core places users can visit. It’s how users can easily dive deeper into areas such as your services, products, blog, etc. There’s nothing worse than a site with a disorganized or confusing navigation interface. Poor design practices such as overstuffing your navigation, using vague or confusing hypertext, and lack or organization can make it hard for your visitors to find where they want to go   If users cannot find what they’re looking for, they have no reason to stay on your site. Instead, they will certainly bounce and find a competitor that offers a better user experience.   In some cases, like in the image above, the menu item will even have a descriptive line to provide more context to the purpose of that page. The hover effect also makes it clear to the user that these are links that will result in them going to another page. With one click, users can get to these places with ease, so make sure you’re enacting a similar strategy (without overloading your navigation)   Clean and specifically organized navigations like this let the user know that you want them to have an easy time moving around your website and that there’s nothing to hide. As a result, your users are more likely to visit higher numbers of pages during their session, increasing their time spent on your website.

7. Let your visitors scroll on your homepage

There was a time where we were wary about making our website pages too long, especially your homepage. This was out of fear of users not scrolling, so it forced folks to try and cram what they could into the most common screen size people view their website with. But those days are long gone. In a  2018 study by the Nielsen Norman Group, 74% of the viewing time on a website page was spent in the first two screenfuls, up to 2160px horizontally. So there’s no need to be afraid of creating a more robust below-the-fold experience. Use your homepage real estate to your advantage. For example, see the  Website hosting company.

A good rule-of-thumb is to include three to five sections that help direct new and recurring users to the key areas of your site   What should these sections be? This list could go on forever, but a quick hit-list of some of the more crucial elements includes:  Value proposition Intro video Overview of services Product features About your company Testimonials Case studies/Success stories Content

8. Don’t be afraid of white space

Whitespace is an essential design element that helps you break up the page and increase readability. Also called “negative space,” white space refers to the areas around elements on a page that are empty and lacking content or visual items   Whitespace also plays an important role in the design process and positioning of website elements. While more whitespace can dictate what sections are separate and guide the eye, less whitespace can dictate which elements are supposed to be related to one another due to their proximity.   This enables users to focus on each part of a website page piece by piece and instantly lets them know where each section begins and ends. This can do wonders for helping guide your user’s eye to important information such as a call-to-action or value proposition.

9. Mobile optimization is a must

But it’s more than just being responsive visually. It’s a necessity to tailor your site to fit the needs and wants of your visitors. Ask yourself, why would someone access my site on mobile? What things would they look for? Does my experience currently allow them to do those things easily?   Using Chili’s website as an example, you can visibly see how the desktop and mobile websites are extremely similar. So when users go back and forth between the two for orders over time, there are similarities between the two that make using the website familiar   They also make it easy to do the core thing on their website, ordering food. The button needed for this is always on-screen on the mobile website, so you can order whenever you’re ready without having to go to an entirely different page.

10. Make pricing easy to find

Tell me if this situation sounds familiar to you   You’re currently looking for a new SaaS product online to solve an issue you’re having. For this story, let’s say a project management tool   You’ve spent the past hour vetting a couple of pieces of software, and think you’ve finally found one that looks promising. With that in mind, you now try to find pricing   So you click on the pricing page only to arrive at a page that looks something like this:   At this point, you’re likely a little frustrated. You might even be wondering if this means it’s too expensive. What are they trying to hide anyway? Why bother calling and asking? So now you decide to leave the site and look at the competitors. If your site follows a similar pattern, or worse, lacks a pricing page at all, you’re going to find your users following this same mindset   With this in mind, let’s look at a website that does make pricing stand out on their website. Trello makes it extremely easy for users to figure out what pricing tier they best fit into and what it will cost the user. The pricing table has the features included below each tier, so comparing each is as simple as reading left to right. The green buttons utilized in the last to tiers also help draw the eye to those being more desirable options. To get started on a great pricing strategy, take a look at these sure-fire tips to help guide you.

Movie Recommendations – Romance/Drama

American Beauty

Sam Mendes’ debut film and eventual Best Picture Winner at the Oscars is an incisive, deliriously funny and profound vision of the American Dream hitting meltdown. “American Beauty” is about mood, not plot. Sadly, the mood is despair, isolation and hopelessness. Lester (Kevin Spacey), who narrates this riveting film, informs viewers at the beginning that he will be dead by the end but the film itself helps understand why this tough decision is made as well as why it seems like a it sadly isn’t the worst option. ⁣

⁣Lester’s life seems like the perfect one, he has a respectable job and a family. But he is slowly but surely falling into a deep depression. This new struggle in life that he is facing leads him to do outrageous things, and becoming infatuated with his daughter’s friend, Angela, seems to be the most impactful thing.⁣

Carol

Mara and Blanchett make for an unforgettable couple in a beautiful film about longing, loss and the confusion and wonder of love. This movie will haunt you with its tale of love denied and forbidden, and a woman’s quest to live authentically while facing social prejudices and bigotry that force her to make a difficult choice. Haynes’ commitment to outcasts, then and now, makes Carol a romantic spellbinder that cuts deep, it is based on Patricia Highsmith’s The Price of Salt, the Oscar-nominated film is a triumph of its lead actors in particular.⁣

⁣Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) works at a department store in Manhattan where she encounters the beautiful Carol (Cate Blanchett). Things take an unexpected turn when Therese develops strong feelings for Carol and is trying to figure out how to deal with these emotions without ruining her entire life.⁣

Movie Recommendations – Thriller Genre

Shutter Island

This neo-noir film marked the 4th collaboration between the great Scorsese and DiCaprio. An enthralling psychological thriller based on a 2003 novel by the same name. Arguably, it runs along the same lines of that of Nolan’s Inception, where we are left with an aching mind as we over-analyze and try to make sense of the reality of these characters. The strongest asset of this film is the character commitment. From DiCaprio, to Ruffalo, to Ben Kingsley – they draw us into this sense of fear and irrationality needed to carry the intrigue the film requires. One that when viewed a second time, you wish you picked up the clues along the way during your first. ⁣

Two US marshals are sent to an asylum on a rainy, remote island to investigate the disappearance of a patient. The trip uncovers shocking truths about the institution and its newest guests.⁣

The Courier

Based on the true life of Grenville Wynne, this thrilling dramatic, cold-war era spy film does not need to exaggerate to impress. Benedict Cumberbatch’s nervy performance makes him the perfect actor to be casted for this role. His journey from an everyday salesman to a courier for the US Government divides the film into two halves, the latter half darker and more intense. Required however to evoke the trauma and angst the moments deserve.  ⁣

An unassuming British businessman is recruited into one of the greatest international operations in history. Under the organization of the MI-6 and CIA operatives, he forms a covert, dangerous partnership with a Soviet officer in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear war. ⁣

Psychological Disorders Part 4

Introduction

In Psychological Disorders Part 3, Dissociative and Somatic Symptom Disorders were discussed. These are the fewer known disorders yet very interesting to know about. (Trigger Warning: this article talks about eating disorders)

Eating Disorders

These disorders arise because of obsessive concern over weight which results in a disruptive eating pattern that then affects the person’s physical and mental health.

Anorexia Nervosa is also commonly known as anorexia which is an eating disorder wherein the person has an abnormally low body weight accompanied by an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of their weight. People with this disorder tend to take extreme measures to control their weight such as restricting their food consumption. The distorted image of the body can be a result of depression, anxiety, or emotional trauma. The physical symptoms are severe weight loss, dehydration, insomnia, weakness, dizziness, constipation, breaking hair, dry skin, bluish tinge to fingers, absence of menstruation, irregular heartbeat, and inability to tolerate cold. Some behavioural symptoms are eating only low-calorie food, trying to hide their body with baggy and loose clothes, skipping meals, avoiding situations where they have to eat, avoiding situations where they might have to show their body, and extreme exercising. Some emotional symptoms are poor self-esteem, agitation, depression, social isolation, and anxiety.

Bulimia Nervosa is also commonly known as bulimia is a serious and life-threatening eating disorder. People with this disorder secretly binge eat large amounts of food without any control over how much they are eating, then they panic and purge to get rid of those extra calories. There are two types of bulimia, purging and non-purging bulimia. To get rid of these extra calories, they use different methods such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, weight-loss supplements, people with purging bulimia use these methods whereas people with non-purging bulimia follow strict dieting or excessive exercise. The physical symptoms can be life-threatening, some of these symptoms are weight fluctuation of 2 to 10 kgs in a week, bloodshot eyes which means eyes with busted blood vessels, chapped lips because of dehydration, scars on the knuckles from inducing vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, and mouth sensitivity because of receding gums and eroding tooth enamel. Some behavioural symptoms are consistent worry about weight and appearance, going to the bathroom right after eating, eating till it is uncomfortable, excessive exercising, not eating in front of others and restricting calories. The emotional symptoms of bulimia are the same as for anorexia.

The DSM-5 has moved the eating disorder of infants and children to the same category. Rumination Disorder is also known as rumination syndrome and it usually occurs in babies and people with developmental disabilities. Children and adults who have high levels of stress have a greater risk of having this disorder. This is a feeding and eating disorder in which the undigested food comes back up from the person’s stomach to their mouth. The symptoms for this are regurgitating on a regular basis, dental problems, chapped lips, weight loss, and digestive problems.

Pica is an eating disorder in which people eat non-food items like clay, dirt, and flaking paint. This disorder is more common in children but can also occur in adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The symptoms for this are upset stomach, bowel problems like constipation or diarrhea, stomach pain, and blood in the stool. If the consumption of non-food items continues, symptoms like lead poisoning, injuries to teeth, infections, and intestinal blockage can occur.

Binge-Eating Disorder (BED) is a feeding and eating disorder in which people eat a large amount of food in a short amount of time even if they might not be hungry. This can be triggered by emotional stress. The person may feel a sense of relief during the binge but will feel shame afterward. The symptoms are eating to a point that is uncomfortably full, eating more rapidly than normal, feeling of disgust with oneself, eating large amounts without feeling hungry, and eating alone because of feeling embarrassed.

Conclusion

It is difficult to figure out what causes these eating disorders but medical experts believe it is a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Genetics plays a role, if you have a family member who suffers from one, you are more likely to be diagnosed with the same. Emotional well-being plays a huge role, people who have experienced trauma or other mental health conditions are more likely to develop one. And finally, societal pressure plays another big role, the western ideal of body image has equated thinness with success and so people try to achieve thinness. If you have any eating disorder, it is important to know it is not your fault and you need to consult a psychologist immediately to get better.
