Anyone who has played video games knows what checkpoints are, but checkpoints are a way to save your progress in a game. Certain games allow saving progress at any point, but some games allow saving progress only at predefined points known as checkpoints. Imagine having this ability in real life; you could revert back to a checkpoint with future knowledge. There is a catch though, to reset, you have to die. The protagonist of this movie finds himself in a similar predicament. Dying sends him back in time, and he is forced to relive his life again.
The movie is set in an alternate 2020 where aliens conquered most of Europe in 2015. Technological advancements lead to the creation of mech suits that give their pilots superhuman strength and reflexes. After success in Germany, the UDF or United Defense Force, a global military organization set up to fight against the aliens, plans on using the mech suits to invade France. The movie turns its focus to the protagonist, Major William Cage, played by Tom Cruise. He finds himself demoted to the rank of private and assigned to the invasion party. Lacking combat experience, he dies but not before killing an unusually large mimic known as an Alpha.
Cage wakes up on the morning when he was demoted to a private and assigned to the invasion party but strangely remembers landing and dying. He tries to warn his commanding officer but to no avail and keeps on being reset after dying and remembers the actions and tries to act accordingly. In one of many such loops, he tries saving Seargent Rita Vrataski, a hero of the attack on Germany against the aliens played by the lovely Emily Blunt. She realizes that Cage can loop back time when he saves her by apparently anticipating every move that could lead to her death. She asks him to find her when he resets again.
When Cage finds Rita and explains what has been happening, having experienced a similar situation, she takes Cage to Dr. Carter, an expert on the Aliens biology. Dr. Carter explains how Cage hijacked the aliens’ ability to loop back time; the ability is a defense mechanism used by the Alien leader “Omega” that reset time to prevent losing. Vratski begins training Cage to use his ability and warns him that a blood transfusion will take away the ability. After many failed loops, Cage learns about the location of the Omega and plans to end the fight once and for all.
After even more failed loops and almost having the ability taken away, Cage and Vrataski decide to track the Omega together. Cage suffers a major injury but is saved by a blood transfusion that inadvertently takes his ability away. Realizing that he has only one attempt at destroying the Omega, he enlists the help of his previous squad. After a grueling fight, Vrataski is killed, and Cage wounded. Cage uses whatever strength he has left to destroy the Omega, drowning in its blood in the process.
Cage wakes up two days earlier and realizes the world is different than he remembers. His effort in killing the Omega helps weaken the aliens and gives humanity the edge required to win.
In conclusion, it is an amazing movie that shows knowing what the future holds can help. The name is apt as Cage literally has the edge over tomorrow, knowing what the future holds for him. A VFX-heavy movie that gives the aliens a menacing look which helps sell the terror and fear. Based on the 2004 Japanese light novel “All you need is Kill” by Hiroshi Sakurazaka checks all the right boxes for a science fiction enthusiast like myself. I heartily recommend the movie to any Science fiction fan or to the fans of Tom Cruise.
Today, July 11, is celebrated as World Population Day each year and this was established by United Nations Development Programme with an attempt to address the issues faced by global population.
This day is very important to India as our country is one of the few in the world to have a massive increase in population in the past few years. With growing population, demands and needs of the public also increases.
Uttar Pradesh, a state in India has a population of about 220 million, larger than that of many of the developed countries in the world. As increasing population is a growing concern, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has proposed a bill to control the population growth and any suggestions that would improve the bill are also welcomed and the last date for public opinion is July 19.
Blue Area: Uttar Pradesh.
The Blue Area, marked on the picture above is Uttar Pradesh and the blue area has more population than the entire red area combined. This shows the seriousness of the situation regarding the population in Uttar Pradesh.
Let us know some of the important facets from the Population Control Bill Draft of Uttar Pradesh which voices for a “two-child norm” in Uttar Pradesh.
The Government Duties:
1) A State Population Fund will be made for the purpose of implementation of the act.
2) Maternity Centres will be established at all primary health care centres. All centres and related NGOs will have to distribute contraceptive pills, condoms and like.
3) The Centres and NGOs will also have to educate people about proper family planning methods and record the information about pregnancies, deliveries, births and deaths.
4) The Government will also ensure that there’s a separate subject regarding population in all secondary schools.
5) The Government would also ensure to stabilise and provide welfare to the population of the state by implementing and promoting two child norm.
6) In the Bill it is also mentioned that public servant who adopt the two child norm would be entitled to several benefits such as increments throughout lifetime, maternity leaves and paternity leaves for 12 months (according to the case) with full salary and allowances and three percent increase in the Employer’s Contribution Fund under National Pension Scheme.
Citizen’s Responsibilities:
-The Bill has also made it clear that anyone violating the two child policy will be debarred from contesting local bodies elections, from applying or getting promoted in Government jobs, and receiving any kind of Government subsidy.
-As responsible citizens, the bill expects us to abide by the laws contained in the bill or suggest any improvements until July 19 and also encourages us to promote sustainable development with more equitable distribution.
Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 in the Copa America final on Saturday, winning the tournament for the first time in 28 years and giving Lionel Messi his first major international prize. Rodrigo de Paul’s long ball to Angel di Maria resulted in Argentina’s winning goal at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in the 22nd minute. To gain control and lob it past goalkeeper Ederson, the 33-year-old veteran attacker relied on some poor defence from left-back Renan Lodi. Brazil has only conceded three goals in the competition. With dribbles and passes, Neymar tried hard, but the Selecao hardly troubled Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Messi’s first international trophy
On Saturday night, Lionel Messi completed his spectacular soccer career by guiding Argentina to a 1-0 victory against host Brazil in the Copa América final in Rio de Janeiro. After a succession of terrible, torturous, and infuriating failures, including probably the most humiliating setback of his career — against Germany in the World Cup final — within the same stadium, Rio’s towering Maracan, in 2014, Messi finally got his first championship with Argentina. When the final whistle rang, Messi sank to his knees and was instantly mobbed by his teammates, his relief apparent. They were lifting him above their shoulders and flinging him in the air moments later.
According to The Associated Press, Messi stated after the celebrations in the locker room, “I wanted to remove the thorn of not being able to achieve something with the national team.” “I’d come close in previous years, and I knew it was going to happen this year. I thank God for providing me with this opportunity, both against and inside Brazil. This was a time I was reserving for myself.”

By the time you have about 100 jumps you have probably decided what it is about skydiving that attracts you. This may change over the years (being able to follow new interests is one of the things that keeps people in skydiving) but for some jumpers the idea that you can work to gain different qualifications that may let you work as a professional skydiver/rigger is a real attraction.
Many jumpers start by earning qualifications that will let you pack a student’s parachute (Packer “B”), or even reserve parachutes (Packer “A”), or fly with a camera/video to record student’s jumps.
You can start a long career as a parachute instructor or tandem master by building up the qualifications you need and learning the depth of sport knowledge necessary. Remember, all those jumpers you see running around every week organising everything did a first jump once. Everybody started as a student.
If this attracts you, start by talking to the jumpers doing it at your DZ – you will find a lot of support. Talk to instructors and your Chief Instructor, these are the people who can help you most. They will probably warn you that it is a lot of work, but it is worth it.
Study as much available information as you can.
GET YOUR LICENSE .
Skydivers must first earn their A license. The minimum jump requirement to achieving a skydiving license is 25 jumps. This can be via either a TDS (tandem direct supervision) or an AFF (accelerated free fall course).
Skydiving certification courses involve a day of ground school. You then progress through a series of instructed jumps, known as levels, skydiving solo but accompanied by an instructor in free fall.
After your levels, you continue skydiving solo to accumulate 25 jumps for your A licence. During these jumps, you prove a range of skydiving safety skills to complete you A licence proficiencycard. An instructor or coach teaches you these skills.

Self improvement is an inner process, which focuses on changing one’s attitude toward oneself and toward the world, and on getting rid of harmful habits and building new good habits. The purpose of this inner process is to improve your behavior and habits, and to create happiness and satisfaction into your life. The aims of self-improvement are to learn to adopt a positive mindset, to get rid of negative habits, and to build positive habits and behavior. It is a process to make ourselves better and happier people.Self-improvement usually starts by becoming more aware of ourselves, our behavior and our reactions. It requires that we earnestly desire to improve ourselves, better our life, and build good relations with people. Self improvement improves your mental health, and helps you become aware of any bad habit, so you can change it. It also improves your life and helps you achieve your goals. This process includes simple steps to make you feel good about yourself, learn new skills, and even practice physical activity to improve your health and energy level.
Here is my try of self improvement:
My 5 Good Habits:
1. Drinking good amount of water
It is essential for a person to drink 3-4 liters of water everyday. There are many benefits of water that we often take for granted. Water not only helps hydrate our bodies, but it can also help prevent headaches, aid in digestion, and relieve bloating. Since water is a natural liquid, it’s much healthier for humans to drink than carbonated or high-sugar drinks like sodas or juices.
2. Going to gym
I go to gym 6 days a week. With our busy routine most of us tend to put our physical and mental health on the last of part of our day-to-day list. But the lack of exercise can cause serious health issues for you down the road. I believe that each one of us should at least take out 1 hour for any exercise activity.
3. Think Positive
Every time a negative thought enters your mind, think of the polar opposite thought to help train your brain to think positively. Objecting to negative or toxic thoughts by replacing them with positive thoughts is a healthy way to help challenge thoughts that don’t uplift you.
4. Spend Time with Family
One of the most neglected good habits is spending time with family. Thankfully I spend a good amount of time with my parents and siblings even though on some days I have a hectic schedule. It relaxes me and I fell happy from inside.
5. Practice good hygiene
One of the good habits of mine is practicing good hygiene along with a self care routine. Showering each evening or morning, doing my skin care routine before going to sleep is something which helps me to feel fresh and overcome my bad moods.
My 5 Bad Habits:
1. Not eating green vegetables
It is always recommend for us to eat more and more vegetables, especially green leafy veggies because they are very beneficial for our health and body as well. They not only help us to stay young, improve our bone strength and eye health but also prevent us from deadly disease such as cancer. I believe this is my worst habit and each one of us should adapt it.
2. Bad sleep routine
I go to bed at around 1:00 a.m. and wake up late the next day because of which I also miss my classes. By developing such bad routine we are putting our health at a higher risk.
3. Use phone before sleeping
One simple effect that watching a screen right before bed has is the fact that we don’t get tired enough to sleep. It keeps our mind psychologically engaged. All of us including myself should avoid using phone before we go to sleep.
4. No Morning Walk
Walking in the morning on a regular basis will result in multiple health benefits and not only improves physical health but also mental and emotional well-being. Morning walk enhances our metabolism, which may be a sign of getting a healthier body.
5. I study on bed and not on a table
A very bad habit of mine is that I always study while sitting or laying on a bed. Because of this I sometimes have neck as well as back pain. We should study on a proper table-chair , it helps us to focus on our work.

Elon Musk has bought a ticket on one of rival billionaire Sir Richard Branson’s spaceship flights, according to a newspaper report.
As Sir Richard prepares to fly on Virgin Galactic’s first fully crewed flight to the edge of space on Sunday from New Mexico, The Sunday Times says Mr Musk – who owns rival exploration company SpaceX – has paid for a seat on a future Virgin voyage.
Mr Musk paid a 10,000-dollar (£7,000) deposit to reserve a seat. No date for his flight has been specified.
Sir Richard confirmed the purchase in an interview with The Sunday Times, saying he might reciprocate by booking a ticket on a SpaceX flight in the future.
“Elon’s a friend and maybe I’ll travel on one of his ships one day,” he said.
Amid what has been dubbed the billionaires’ space race, SpaceX has launched dozens of rockets, including manned flights, but Mr Musk himself has not yet flown on any. The company is due to launch its first fully private spaceflight in the autumn.
Sir Richard will become the first owner-astronaut to take part in a mission, beating Amazon founder Jeff Bezos who plans to reach space in his own rocket – through his Blue Origin company – in nine days’ time.
Tourists are expected to pay some 250,000 dollars (£180,000) for a spaceflight on Virgin Galactic, which includes four minutes of zero gravity.
On a human time scale, the amount of water on the earth is fixed, for all practical purposes. There is little we can do to make more water. However, there are several ways to increase local supplies.
⭐ Seeding clouds
Seeding clouds with dry ice or Potassium iodide particles sometimes can initiate rain,if water laden clouds and conditions that favour precipitation are present.
⭐ Desalination
Desalination of ocean water is a technology that have a great potential for increasing fresh water. The common methods of desalination are distillation or reverse osmosis.Although desalination is still three or four times more expensive than most other sources of fresh water,it provides a welcome water supply in such places like Dubai,Oman and Bahrain where there is no other access to fresh water.
⭐Dams, reservoirs,canals and aqueducts
It is common to trap run off with dams and storage reservoirs and transfer water from areas of excess to areas of deficit using canals, tunnels and underground pipes.
⭐Watershed management
A series of small dams or tributary streams can hold back water before it comes a great flood.Ponds formed by these dams provide useful wildlife habitat and stock watering facilities.Small dams can be built with simple equipment and local labour, eliminating the need for massive construction projects and huge dams.
⭐Rain water harvesting
The activity of collecting rainwater directly or recharging it into ground to improve ground water storage in the aquifer is called rain water harvesting.By rainwater harvesting the ground water can be conserved, water table depletion can be reduced and also sea water intrusion in coastal areas can be arrested. To recharge the groundwater, rainwater that falls in the terrace of the buildings and in the open space around the buildings may be harvested.Roof top rain water can be diverted to the existing open/bore well.Rainwater available in the open spaces around the building may be recharged into the ground.
⭐ Better agricultural practices
Sound farming and foresting practices can reduce runoff.Retaining crop residues on fields reduces flooding.Minimizing ploughing and forest cutting on steep slopes protects watersheds.Wetlands conservation preserves natural water storage capacity and aquifer recharge zones.
⭐ Domestic conservation
We could save as much as half of the water we now use for domestic purposes without great sacrifice or serious changes in our lifestyles. The use of washing machines, dish washers and low volume shower heads can reduce water loss.
⭐ Industrial conservation
Nearly half of all industrial water use is for cooking of electric power plants and other industrial facilities.By installing dry cooling systems, this could be avoided.Cooling water can be recharged, some industrial wastewater may be treated, recycled and reused.
⭐ Individuals role to save water
⚫ Take shorter showers
⚫Don’t wash car and two wheelers often
⚫Don’t allow tap run unnecessarily while washing hands, dishes, food or brushing your teeth
⚫In your lawn consider planting native plants,a rock garden or some xerophytic landscaping
⚫Use water conserving appliances:low-flow showers and low- flush toilets
⚫Use recycled water for lawns, house plants and car washing
The Birla Mandir has been built by the ‘Birla family’, the famous industrialist family of India. The construction of the temple began in 1970 and it took 26 years to complete the indelible structure. The temple was inaugurated on the 21st of February, 1996 by Dr. Karan Singh. The Pran Prathistha ceremony of the idols was done by Swami Chidananda Maharaj. The temple is dedicated to the consortium of Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha.
Victoria Memorial
The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Empress Victoria, and is now a museum under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The memorial lies on the Maidan and is one of the famous monuments of Kolkata .The Victoria Memorial’s architect was William Emerson (1843–1924).The design is in the Indo-Saracenic revivalist style which uses a mixture of British and Mughal elements with Venetian, Egyptian, Deccani architectural influences .The building is 338 by 228 feet (103 by 69 m) and rises to a height of 184 feet (56 m). It is constructed of white Makrana marble.
he gardens of the Victoria Memorial were designed by Lord Redesdale and David Prain. Emerson’s assistant, Vincent Jerome Esch, designed the bridge of the north aspect and the garden gates. In 1902, Emerson engaged Esch to sketch his original design for the Victoria Memorial. Angel of Kolkata atop Victoria Memorial
Atop the central dome of the Victoria Memorial is the 16 ft (4.9 m) figure of the Angel of Victory. Surrounding the dome are allegorical sculptures including Art, Architecture, Justice, and Charity and above the North Porch are Motherhood, Prudence and Learning.
The Victoria Memorial is built of white Makrana marble. In design it echoes the Taj Mahal with its dome, four subsidiaries, octagonal-domed chattris, high portals, terrace, and domed corner towers.
Belur Math
The design of the temple was envisaged by Swami Vivekananda, and the responsibility of the architecture was laid in his hands. The architecture and design of the temple ‘celebrate the diversity of Indian Religions’. When seen from different angles, the monument resembles a temple, a church and a mosque. The incorporation of architectural styles from different religions conveys the universal faith in which the movement believes in.
The main entrance of the temple is heavily influenced by the Buddhist styles of the Sanchi Stupa and the entry of the Ajanta Caves. The windows and the balconies draw from the Rajput and Mughal styles of architectural designs, while the central dome is derived from European architecture. Also, the ground plan is in the shape of a Christian cross. Mainly built out of chunar stone, the 112.5 feet high temple has images of Lord Ganesha and Hanuman, who represent success and power respectively, carved above the pillars of the entrance doors.
Fort William
The Fort is built of brick and mortar in the shape of an irregular octagon with an area of 5 km2 (1.9 sq mi). Five of its sides face landward, and three towards the Hooghly River. The design is that of a star fort, suited to defence against cannon firing solid shot, and dates from before the advent of explosive shells. A dry moat 9 metres (30 ft) deep and 15 m (49 ft) broad surrounds the fort. The moat can be flooded but is designed as an area in which to use enfilade (or flanking) fire against any attackers reaching the walls. There are six gates: Chowringhee, Plassey, Calcutta, Water Gate, St Georges and the Treasury Gate. There are similar forts at places like Thalassery in Kerala.
Dakshineswar Kali Temple
Built in the navaratna or nine spires style of Bengal architecture, the three-storeyed south-facing temple has nine spires distributed in the upper two storeys, and stands on a high platform with a flight of stairs, overall it measures 46 feet (14 m) square and rises over 100 feet (30 m) high.
The garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum) houses an idol of goddess Kali, known as Bhavatarini, standing on the chest of a supine Shiva, and the two idols are placed on a thousand-petaled lotus throne made of silver.
Close to the main temple are the row of twelve identical Shiva temples built facing the east in the typical aat-chala Bengal architecture, they are built on either side of the ghat on the Hooghly river. To the North east of the Temple Complex is the Vishnu Temple or the Radha Kanta Temple. A flight of steps lead to the columned verandah and into the temple where a silver throne rests with a 21+1⁄2-inch (550 mm) idol of Lord Krishna and a 16-inch (410 mm) idol of Radha.
Motherhood : The stage where you start experiencing heaven on earth and I have started my journey to heaven ,”today”.
you are the first person on this earth whom I have started loving even without knowing whether you are girl or boy, dark or white, chubby or thin ,tall or short, no matter how you are, there is only one prettiest baby in this world and that’s mine.
I have experienced many relationships right from my birth like cute little daughter to my parents, the naughtiest sister for my brother, the most caring grand daughter to my grandparents and wonderful better half to my hubby but I have started experiencing something new called motherhood. It is you who made me experience this and I’m loving it.
you are my sun who raised to show me that life is not dark as I thought instead made me realize ,it is bright and beautiful. There is no bigger gift than growing a life inside me and it is you who presented that gift to me .”your life is growing inside me”.
People around me started taking care of me like a baby. They insist me on eating my food and waking me up early morning . They started saving the comfiest chair for me which makes me feel like a Queen.
when I heard your cute little heart beat for the first time, I heard the world’s best rhythm that on other musicians can create. The biggest and a best suprise is that, I didn’t expect that I would love motherhood as much as I do now, waiting to feel your little kicks, even if it is painful I would feel happy that I’m never alone .
Procrastination is that the habit of avoiding urgent tasks despite negative consequences. When people procrastinate, they often delay priorities and instead specialise in smaller , more enjoyable, simpler tasks instead.
Contrary to popular belief, procrastination is quite just laziness or poor time management. When it involves procrastination, telling someone to “just do it” doesn’t work. it might be like telling someone with depressive disorder to “cheer up.” Although everyone can occasionally procrastinate, chronic procrastination may be a different problem. And consistent with research, as many as 20% of usa citizens could also be chronic procrastinators.
Some of the foremost common reasons for what causes procrastination include:
Perfectionism Avoidance Low self-esteem Depression Trouble focusing ADHD Waiting until the eleventh hour Task aversion Resisting challenges Decision fatigue Difficulty defining goals A disconnect with the longer term self Lack of energy Procrastination prevents you from reaching your full potential—in your relationships, career, and beyond. It impedes teamwork, decreases self-esteem, and even results in depression and job loss. On top of that, people avoid important wellness habits like getting to the doctor or regular exercise.
Procrastination has its own blessings too-
Procrastination causes you to more creative. If you’ve got an enormous , important task before you, it’s natural to procrastinate because it is so daunting. What you would possibly not realize is that even when you are not actively performing on that task, your mind is subconsciously collecting ideas and processing things to organize you for it. meaning that once you actually sit right down to get thereto , you’ve got tons more ideas in your head on the way to set about it.
Procrastination helps you to form better decisions. Sometimes you procrastinate on a choice because you are not entirely sure which is that the right choice for you. Your rational mind and your intuition are saying opposite things, and you cannot quite find out which one to concentrate to—or who’s saying what! That’s when procrastination becomes your savior because you avoid jumping into something which may not be right for you. It buys you time to believe all the choices and their pros and cons. Once the deadline arrives, you’re able to make the choice as you’ve done your research.
Although,It’s a cruel irony that it seems to be the days that we’ve loads to try to to that we procrastinate the foremost . Often, this happens because we become so overwhelmed about having 10 bazillion things to try to to that we don’t know where to start out . So, we find yourself doing…well, nothing in the least . Most of the time, overwhelm happens because we’ve an overflowing to-do list, but no plan or structure around how we’re getting to actually tackle those tasks. Or, we’ve one mega task that feels so huge and unattainable that we quite just want to pretend it doesn’t exist.
Silent patient written by Alex Michaelides is the first psychological thriller I have ever read. Hence I am going to be reviewing it like a thriller novice, as it’s my first encounter with psychological warfare that’s unleashed by this book.
Plot Summary
This story essentially revolves around Alicia Berenson and her silence. Alicia is an artist who fortes in painting photorealistic oil paintings, which becomes the reason for her popularity. But one day when the police are called to her house her reason for popularity alters when they find her husband, Gabriel dead. Shot in the head five times by her and with a refusal to speak anything after that.
Six years pass since her refusal to speak, no one has heard one word from her. Sitting in the Grove, a forensic institute, we still don’t know what was the reason she committed such a brutal crime. The only clue is the last painting she painted after killing her husband and her long long silence.
Someone finally takes the dare to solve this mystery, this how our second primary protagonist is introduced. Theo Faber, a psychotherapist with a keen interest in Alicia Berenson. Through Theo we come face to face with many elements in Alicia’s life, that may have been instrumental in the murder.
Review
The book is written in fairly simple language, there is not much medical jargon that might have made this book complex. The two protagonists are well developed. But other than that, secondary characters are not given much attention. As the story majorly revolves around the two primary characters.
The story is an easy read, but it is slow progress. You get to know about Alicia and Theo little by little. The driving force behind the story is essentially the question WHY, why did she kill him. While it is a good motivator to continue the book, it lacks the drama and volume for a perfect ending.
The part I liked the most was the ending because it was a well worthy twist to wait for, but I did get an inkling for the last twist. And hence it lacked the dramatics.
This book also gave me an insight into the world of psychology, it brought forward the inner working of our brain and how it works under absurd circumstances. The importance of past and childhood can clearly be seen in this book. Giving some compelling takeaways as psychology lessons.
Should You Read This Book ?
As a novice, I would definitely suggest giving a one-time read to this book. It is a good book to enter the world of psychological thrillers. Its simple language is definitely suitable for everyone. But if you are looking for a book with adventure and excitement, then maybe this book is not for you. I would give this book 3.5/5 for its interesting plotline and easy to follow plot.
As temperature levels are on the rise in Punjab, where paddy transplantation is also in full swing, the state is experiencing a severe power outage. Even when the farm sector has still not received the guaranteed eight-hour electricity supply residential consumers have now been forced to suffer as a result of extended electricity outages
Furthermore, the state-owned power company PSPCL has enforced a two-day mandatory reduction on high-consumption industries in order to redirect electricity to farms and the household sector There is also a restriction on operating air conditioning units in government offices, as their hours have been reduced from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. due to the shortages
The requirement for electricity has reached 14,225 MW as temperatures have risen and it is the peak season for paddy transplanting. The electricity providers, though, have only been able to deliver 12,800 MW. The 1,425 MW shortfall has resulted in power outages lasting up to 14 hours in the residential sector. Now, businesses have been closed down for two days to guarantee that the farming industry receives adequate supplies and also that the critical window for paddy transplanting is not missed. Farmers and residential customers took to the streets in protest a few days earlier. Industry groups are protesting that this was the last thing they wanted in the midst of a pandemic that has devastated all businesses.
What may have caused the state’s electricity problem?
The shutting down of the government-run thermal plant in Bathinda and two units of yet another government thermal plant in Ropar, with a total capacity of 880 MW, was one of the first actions taken by the current Congress administration in Punjab. There were no backup plans in place to compensate for the loss of output once these factories were closed.
Furthermore, in 2018, the government rejected PSPCL’s intention to build a 100-MW solar facility at the Bathinda thermal plant, which could have been operational within a year. A PSPCL request to upgrade a Bathinda thermal facility to utilize biomass fuel from paddy straw was also denied.
In addition, a unit of the private TSPL Power Plant located in Talwandi Sabo has been shut down since March 8 due to a lack of repairs. The plant generates 660 MW. According to former PSPCL chairman Baldev Singh Sra, the plant had to be closed down due to defective Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Why is it that Punjab seems unable to purchase electricity then?
PSPCL is experiencing financial difficulties. The state owes it Rs 5,000 crore for agricultural subsidies, while government institutions owe PSPCL Rs 2,000 crore. During one latest power meeting held, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh instructed the finance department of the state to provide Rs 500 crore towards the usability for power purchase. Furthermore, even if it purchased additional electricity, the state of Punjab has a transmission capacity of 13,000 MW only.
What has the Punjab government said?
A. Venu Prasad, CMD of PSPCL, blamed the power outage on the collapse of the Talwandi Sabo power plant. He also stated that the hailstorm that occurred between June 10 and 15 contributed to the problem and that it took them many days to fix the plant. Because the destruction was so extensive, several areas are still being repaired.
Prasad also stated that the state’s water table was dropping and that more electricity was needed to extract water from the ground bore wells. He stated that the administration was dedicated to delivering electricity and that they had already begun acquiring power from other sources to hold them over till the situation passed.
