Are products really ‘Made In China’ ???

Made in China. We’ve become accustomed to seeing the label on products manufactured in the world’s second biggest economy. But buying one of these products in China instead of say, the U.S., doesn’t guarantee you’re getting a better price. Chinese tourists have built a reputation for being big spenders abroad, spending a whopping $277 billion in 2018, much more than any other nationality. A lot of times, people think that purchasing something in China will be inexpensive, but that isn’t always the case. So how much of a difference are we talking? If we bring four products from four popular western brands to compare. Starbucks, H&M, Adidas store, a Godiva store. To keep things consistent, we will be using 2019’s average foreign exchange rate. The products compared are:

  1. A standard black t-shirt at H&M.
  2. Starbucks Grande Cappuccino.
  3. Godiva Chocolates.
  4. An Adidas hat.

Now let’s compare:

  1. The shirt at H&M is priced nearly the same in the U.S. and China.
  2. A Grande Starbucks cappuccino will cost you $4.63 in Beijing, but in Los Angles, California, $3.95.
  3. This case of Godiva chocolates, called Pearls, is priced at $7.24 in Beijing, but only $3.95 in LA.
  4. The Adidas hat will set you back $42.27 in China, nearly double the price of a similar hat in the U.S.

This experiment has made clear that pricing are complicated. So much so, that websites have popped up like the Mac Index, a site that compares Apple product prices from around the world. So many ads for Apple here in this area. According to an analysis done by Tech Insights, the cost to make an Apple iPhone 11 Pro is $490.50. Yet according to The Mac Index, the price to buy one is $1,318 in Japan, $1,477 in the U.S., $1,658 in Mainland China and more than $2,000 in Turkey and Peru. Prices vary across countries due to factors like demand, tariffs and tax refunds. And then there’s the supply chain: the network of people, organizations, activities, information and resources involved in the creation of a product.

Apple’s current CEO Tim Cook is considered by some to be a mastermind in supply chain. He first joined Apple in 1998 with a mandate to clean up the company’s manufacturing and distribution. Over time, he closed factories and warehouses, instead opting for contract manufacturers in China. That’s great for Apple’s profit margins, but it’s certainly not praised by President Trump, who has asked Apple to make its products in the U.S. If, say, iPhone production was moved to the U.S., instead of China, different analyses show the price for the consumer could go up from anywhere from $30 or $40 to hundreds of dollars to even $30,000-100,000. That’s partially why, despite Apple pledging to invest more money in American manufacturing, it maintains China as its hub for making its gadgets.

That’s Omar Slim, a senior portfolio manager at global asset manager, PineBridge. When you hear about made in this country or that country is really quite relative and it’s a simplification of things because it’s most likely made in a number of countries. Here’s an example. Let’s say we want to make lasagna for dinner. If Jeff cooks the ground beef and prepares the cheese, Sarah makes the tomato sauce and layers the ingredients into a pan; and Blair, who bought all the ingredients, puts it in the oven, who gets the credit for making the lasagna? Now, let’s apply that to Apple’s iPhone. While the phone might say ‘Made in China,’ some of its parts come from other parts of Asia, Europe and even the U.S. Even though an iPhone may be assembled in China, it’s still tariffed in China as a U.S. product because Apple is an American company. The brand makes that clear with by, ‘Designed by Apple in California. How they’re treated in terms of customs, they will be treated as a U.S. product. So regardless of where they come, it’s essentially a U.S. product. Same for Chinese products going into the U.S. and same for, for instance, European cars.

India simply cannot afford to boycott Made in China — Quartz India

China became a popular manufacturing hub in the 1980s after it started to open to the world. It became known for its cheap labor costs, lax regulations and business-friendly environment. As China’s manufacturing sector grew, it took the crown from Germany as the world’s top exporter in 2010. While Made in China has become synonymous with cheap and low-quality products, China is hoping to change that. In 2015, it launched a Made in China 2025 initiative, which aims to shift its economy from low-end manufacturing to high-end, high-tech products. In 2017, Tim Cook said China lost its place as a low labor cost manufacturing nation many years ago. The U.S.-China trade war resulted in a tit-for-tat increase in tariffs on many products.

With increasing costs being passed on to consumers, many companies are looking to diversify their supply chain, instead of being so reliant on China. That sentiment has only grown, following the coronavirus pandemic’s hit on the global manufacturing industry. Along that supply chain, there will be some companies, that instead of manufacturing it in China, if they could, they could try to replace. In fact, companies including Apple, Microsoft and Google are reportedly looking into moving some of their hardware production from China to Vietnam or Thailand. But that might be harder than it sounds. The other countries will have a hard time to compete along with the fact that the infrastructure is shown that it’s quite good, along with the fact that in certain countries would not want to compromise the relationship with China.

70 Reasons that makes us Proud to be Made In India - Sanjay Dalmia

The reality today is that a product likely has many components which are sourced globally. A phone may be designed in the U.S, but its screen is sourced from South Korea, the sensors and microchips may be from Taiwan or Germany, with its assembly in China. So, the next time you see a product with the words, “Made in China,” remember that the full story is seldom pure, and never simple.

Can People Spread the Coronavirus If They Don’t Have Symptoms? 5 Questions

Screening for symptoms of COVID-19 and self-quarantine are good at preventing sick people from spreading the coronavirus. But more and more evidence is suggesting that people without symptoms are spreading the virus too. Monica Gandhi, an infectious diseases physician and researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, explains what is known about asymptomatic spread and why she thinks it may be a big part of what is driving the pandemic.

What does it mean to be asymptomatic?

SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19 – can produce a range of clinical manifestations. Some people who are infected never develop any symptoms at all. These patients are considered true asymptomatic cases.

When people do get sick from the coronavirus, it takes on average five days and as many as two weeks to develop symptoms that can range from very mild to extremely dangerous. The time between initial infection and the first symptoms is called the pre-symptomatic phase. As an infectious disease physician, when I hear about asymptomatic spread of SARS-CoV-2, I think of a person who doesn’t have symptoms at the moment they give the virus to someone else. It doesn’t matter whether they are a true asymptomatic case or just pre-symptomatic; the public health risk is the same.

How many people are asymptomatic?

Estimates of the proportion of true asymptomatic cases – those who are infected and never develop symptoms – range from 18% to over 80%. The reasons for the huge range in estimates are still unclear, but some studies are better than others.

The most accurate way to determine the rate of asymptomatic cases is to test people regardless of whether or not they have symptoms – an approach called universal mass testing – and track them over time to see if they develop symptoms later. A recent mass testing campaign in San Francisco found that 53% of infected patients were asymptomatic when first tested and 42% stayed asymptomatic over the next two weeks. Another recent paper compared the evidence from 16 studies and estimated the overall rate of asymptomatic infection to be 40%-45%. This is in line with the San Francisco finding, but the studies sampled were of various quality and size and likely include some pre-symptomatic cases. Though none of these studies is perfect, a lot of evidence supports a true asymptomatic rate of around 40%, plus some addition fraction of patients who are pre-symptomatic.

How can asymptomatic people spread the coronavirus?

Compared to most other viral infections, SARS-CoV-2 produces an unusually high level of viral particles in the upper respiratory tract – specifically the nose and mouth. When those viral particles escape into the environment, that is called viral shedding.

Researchers have found that pre-symptomatic people shed the virus at an extremely high rate, similar to the seasonal flu. But people with the flu don’t normally shed virus until they have symptoms.

The location of the shedding is also important. SARS-CoV – the virus that caused the SARS epidemic in 2003 – does not shed very much from the nose and mouth. It replicates deep in the lungs. Since SARS-CoV-2 is present in high numbers in a person’s nose and mouth, it is that much easier for the virus to escape into the environment.

When people cough or talk, they spray droplets of saliva and mucus into the air. Since SARS-CoV-2 sheds so heavily in the nose and mouth, these droplets are likely how people without symptoms are spreading the virus.

How much asymptomatic spread is happening?

Public health experts don’t know exactly how much spread is caused by asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic patients. But there are some telling hints that it is a major driver of this pandemic. An early modeling estimate suggested that 80% of infections could be attributed to spread from undocumented cases. Presumably the undocumented patients were asymptomatic or had only extremely mild symptoms. Though interesting, the researchers made a lot of assumptions in that model so it is hard to judge the accuracy of that prediction.

A study looking at outbreaks in Ningbo, China, found that people without symptoms spread the virus as easily as those with symptoms. If half of all infected people are without symptoms at any point in time, and those people can transmit SARS-CoV-2 as easily as symptomatic patients, it is safe to assume a huge percentage of spread comes from people without symptoms.

Even without knowing the exact numbers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes that transmission from people without symptoms is a major contributor to the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 around the world.

What can we do to limit asymptomatic spread?

Any time a virus can be spread by people without symptoms, you have to turn to preventative measures. Social distancing measures and lockdowns work, but have large economic and social repercussions. These were necessary when epidemiologists didn’t know how the virus was spreading, but now we know it sheds at high quantities from the upper respiratory tract.

This means that universal mask wearing is best tool to limit transmission, and there is evidence to back that idea up.

On April 3, the CDC recommended that all members of the public wear facial coverings when outside of the house and around others. The World Health Organization finally followed suit and recommended universal public masking on June 5.

At this point, no one knows exactly how many cases of COVID-19 are from asymptomatic spread. But I and many other infectious diseases researchers are convinced that it is playing a major role in this pandemic. Wearing a mask and practicing social distancing can prevent asymptomatic spread and help reduce the harm from this dangerous virus until we get a vaccine.

“Soap VS Sanitizer – What Experts Believe?”

Today’s is a time when we humans are living with a pandemic which is growing all over the world. People are getting infected and dying in numbers and it’s count seeing no end. This virus has been named as Corona or Covid-19. This virus infects a person leading him/ her to high fever, cough and lack in breathing. This surely affects the respiratory system of humans, and thus spreads. Since we know that these viruses do require a host to survive, and when they get so, they just multiply. This is a virus which can spread through touch, so mostly advise to maintain a distance of 1 metre or more while talking with a person. But What doctors are so concerned with is the fact that these viruses are going through mutations and are mutating as they spread from one person to another. This surely is a sign of concern, this not only changes the DNA of the virus but also can make it difficult to track  the presence of the virus, since the technique must not be able to catch the virus, as it has evolved, thus the virus may be present even if any individual test negative. So what can be done to prohibit and remain safe from this deadliest virus.

Doctors advise to maintain a distance of 1 metre or more while talking, use a handkerchief while sneezing or coughing and frequently wash hands with soap or sanitizer. But one of the frequently asked questions by patients and other individuals is which is better Soap or Sanitizer

So to test  and investigate the effectiveness of these  two and figure out which is better, did an experiment. They included and worked on  two scenarios.

  1. Washing hands with sanitizer
  2. Washing hands with the soap.

Doctors in the microbiology lab experimented the effectiveness of E. Coli bacteria. They rubbed their hands with the bacteria and then  hands were runned on the plates, thus leaving hand impacts which were filled with bacteria. Then they washed their hands with the sanitizer but a very small quantity. Then again with a new simple but with a heavy quantity of sanitizer and the same results were recorded. The second scenario was to rub hands in E. Coli and wash hands with soap. Similar experiment was done, first washing hands for merely 10 seconds and second time for more than 30 seconds. The plates were then set to rest for 24 hours and then results were recorded.

The results were really amazing, hand sanitizer with much of a quantity removed almost all the bacteria than with the little quantity. Same was the case with the soap, the time period of rubbing hands for. More than 30 seconds helped remove more of the bacteria than just running and washing away. But the interesting fact to record was that sanitizer is able to remove almost all the bacteria and clean our hands as compared to soap which helps some of bacteria still intact with the patch.

“So sanitizer as per experts, doctors and scientists are much more effective as compared to soaps. It’s better to use sanitizer anyway since every drop of it remains untouched and pure and thus is an effective way out to stay away from bacteria and virus and thus stay safe

Class 12 boy handles bodies of coronavirus patients

Introduction

The spread of Corona Virus has resulted in World-wide lockdown and India too has implemented lock down in all its states for last few months. This led to closing of the major industries like automobiles, infrastructure, tourism, manufacturing etc. which are biggest stakeholders of organized and unorganized sectors in India. Most of the people working in these sectors are daily age workers who do not have fixed income or benefits but solely relies on everyday wages. The closure of all these sectors has led to one of the biggest crisis which we will face in future. Here’s an article on class 12 boy handling bodies of coronavirus patients to earn living.

About

In a hunger for job to ease living, 12 class boy haunted a dangerous job of handling bodies of corona patients. A class 12 student, wants  to study medicine, to supply for his siblings’ school fees and his mother’s treatment he is doing this job. Chand Mohammad’s mother suffers from a thyroid disorder and needs her medicines urgently, but the family doesn’t have enough means for the treatment. They are barely making their ends for living . As his elder brother lost his job at a merchandise store in Krishna Nagar market during the lockdown. Chand Mohammad is from Seelampur in Northeast Delhi. He and his family has been surviving on ration provided by neighbors. And whatever his brother could earn doing odd jobs.

Where Chand joined for work?

A week ago, Chand joined a corporation as a sweeper at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital in New Delhi. The job requires him to handle bodies of corona patients. The shift is from 12 noon to eight pm. He took this work after he got exhausted from all options to seek out work. Though this is a dangerous job, as he is at a better risk of getting engaged with the infection, but he want the work and earn. His family, including three sisters, two brothers and fogeys, is struggling for living. Right now, they had food and medicines for my mother. On many days, they cooked food only once. There’s an opportunity that they may fight the virus, but they cannot run away from hunger. Chand’s three sisters are still in school. He, himself is in 12 standard and have to pay the varsity fee. They need money to study. He hopes that his first salary will set things right to a particular extent. He read namaz before he exits his home for work. He even have faith within the almighty. God will look after  him and will surely show him the way.

How he is handling bodies of coronavirus patients?

Chand, who wants to study medicine, says But what bothers the youngster is that employees like him who are into high-risk jobs don’t get any insurance from the private companies employing them. “The most dangerous job within the world immediately handling bodies of corona patients  pays around Rs 17,000 per month. Every day, Chand handles around two to three bodies along side another sweeper. They are required to place the bodies inside the ambulance, take it to the crematorium and put it down on a stretcher once they reach the crematorium. They also have to remove all wearing the private protection equipment, which is extremely heavy. It limits movement and suffocates an individual. During this heat, one can finish up bathing in their own sweat.

An incident he shared with media

On Tuesday evening, Chand handled a body on his own. There was no helper with him, So, it took him a while. He gathered his breath at the top when he heard, a doctor saying the body had been lying within the mortuary for a month which nobody claimed it. Once he tried taking the body down from the ambulance, the duvet came off and a few liquid spilled on his thighs. As he is desperate to get some money, Chand has approached people giving money on low interest rates and he took his Aadhaar card and voter card, hoping to urge some money on low interest rates. His family is worried about his safety. Perhaps they also know that this is the only way for them to survive at the present. His parents inquire about his work daily. They pray for his safety. His mother cries tons daily, but he make her understand. Chand takes a shower as soon as he reaches home and keeps a distance from his family members. He is taking all precautions. For now, he would like some help in order that the family remains afloat. But we may never know what is in our destiny!

Conclusion

As this pandemic has made many people to suffer a lot. They are unable to have one time meal. Many don’t have money, they have migrated. We should help poor and needy as much as we can. This boy Chand Mohammad has to opt this job in which he is handling bodies of coronavirus patients. Just because he don’t have enough money he is doing this dangerous job.

“Mutations In Corona Virus-Leading Towards Second Wave?”

Current era we are living in is a time of pandemic which is  spread all over the world, infecting millions of people and thousands of people losing life. The hike is growing day by day with no proper vaccines  and cure to it. There have been various studies and ways to test this disease. But various scientists are concerned about something which is surely not good news for people around the world. They believe that the spread of Corona-virus is increasing with its increase in mutation. Mutation is a phenomenon which means the change in the DNA sequence and this mutation can be due to mistake while Copying Of DNA to another cell or due to environment factors as a source of change and adapting the surrounding.

There have been countries where this pandemic has been eradicated and some places where it is seeing a general downfall in its rate, while there are countries on the contrary and are seeking hikes day by day. Scientists believe that corona-virus may be mutating while it replicates from one individual to another. But the interesting fact is that these viruses or bacteria do mutate every time which means they do  and can change themselves while they get transferred from one person to others we know then need a host to be alive. Virus can be thus simply explained as anything that things that infect us and thus make us sick. Scientists believe that this Covid-19 virus is made up of RNA or Ribonucleic acid which is the building block of life and carry codes which do for a living organism. So this mutation happens when the sequence changes. When these viruses make mistakes in copying their code, they can’t reverse it which man’s that once it gets changed it will be the same forever, and this change goes on happening as it grows . Scientists have come up with discoveries reflecting the mutation process in this Covid- 19 virus

  1. It is believed that the mutation changes are very small and the person would be feeling the same symptoms as present in the older cases.
  2. But mutation could be an area of concern while testing, as it may be possible that the technique we use for testing it may not be able to catch the mutation and thus gives us a negative result while it is still being present inside the body.
  3. Also the possibility exists to find a vaccine solving the older virus while the new mutated virus still survives . So there needs to be advancement with time for testing technique, and at least twice a person should be tested so as to get a proper report.
  4. This change in mutations and their known symptoms could also help the doctors to prepare the vaccine more accurately and effectively.

But there are biologists that believe that mutations of covid-19 virus are small and their change remains mostly the same. So this could be a strong  reason which could give a reason to start the “Second wave” of virus, with much improved mutated virus. “So scientists and biologists need to remain updated with any change in the characteristics of these viruses, catch their mutations, track them and thus use them to find a proper vaccine and way out other than social distancing and thus save humanity from this deadliest virus and its spread”.

It’s okay not to be okay !

We are all here in this pandemic, most of us are staying at homes. Keeping ourselves away from others for theirs as well as our well being. But staying so long at home results in mental illness as well.

We go around and start living in new places, sometimes may be due to work or maybe any other reason. Being in a place with completely new people brings difficulties and lessons. There are many observations and analysis you make about people. Some people might have stuck in the place of their work. Staying out means you grow and become a better version of yourself and explore more. Your life becomes quick and fast. You try new things and make memories. But sometimes you just feel that things are not going well. It’s not just about being away from home but it can happen whether you are with your parents or with family things can make you upset.

Breaking up with people can make you sad, failure in any field you work can make you upset at the end of a month when you are broke and don’t have a single penny to do buy what you want can make you sad.

Materialistically, emotionally, physically, atmospherically things can get against you and can make you sad. You might not find things going well and you want to isolate yourself from this entire world, you would think that things are not at their best pace, and you are not worth anything.

Accept that you are sad!!

There are times when you feel happy about various things. There are times when small surprises can make you happy and you feel blessed for what is happening around. There are days when you just wake up feeling so fresh about things and you love the day for no reason because you woke up like this. You laugh and sing inside your head all day long and smile.

And then there are days when you don’t want yourself to be bothered by many people and lay inside your bed for no reason. You feel fine physically but mentally you don’t feel much fresh and happy.

•It’s okay if you don’t know

Sometimes you know the reason sometimes you just don’t. It’s okay to feel this way. It’s totally fine to feel upset about things. Every time you don’t need to have that smile on your face. It’s your body that accepts that you are sad. Moreover, accept that you can be sad. It’s okay to be sad. It’s normal to feel dejected and not to feel good for yourself. Accept that things went wrong, accept that you failed and you need to work hard. Days have nights and nights have days. Time heals everything. Don’t resist it. Live it and accept it.

•Once you accept it!

You conquer half of the battle just by accepting the fact that you are not happy and you need a break. Don’t just isolate yourself from this world. Don’t resist people and their presence. Think of things you didn’t do because of your work or you just forgot what you used to do. Do them. Get back to work that’s all you need to do. When you are happy, you celebrate but you never leave your work. The same is the case when you are sad. When you are sad just don’t stop working. Start working more. Make yourself busy. Make things go as they were and don’t leave your daily routine. Things will fall into their places give it some time. Have patience and enjoy the phase of your life. Its okay things will become good.

•Don’t confuse it with depression!

Don’t confuse things with depression. Things might go wrong. But depression is a very large term. Being sad should not be misled with being depressed. Depression is medically proved diseases which can only be assured if taken the proper test and with doctor’s concern. Depression is a disorder which affects a person’s thoughts, behavior, tendencies, feeling, and sense of well-being. Depression is more likely a mental illness and it should not be taken lightly.

How to be assured?

Let us compare this with having dengue, until and unless your doctor assures that you are suffering from it you just don’t consider that you re affected with it. Similarly, when you are not assured properly with what you are suffering from then you should not consider being in depression. It is a medical statement that should be used when checked properly. Just because you are sad is not necessary that you are depressed. Most of the people in the society and our surrounding have this misconception of being in depression is very common. But this is not true. You must never think like these rather consult a doctor if in doubt.

Best measures to overcome depression.

Sleep. Take proper sleep. Go to bed early and wake up early. Sleep for at most 6 hours daily. Proper sleep is a part of a healthy life and a better mood. This gives new energy to the body and freshens up the mind with new thoughts. It helps in stimulating our immune system as well as our emotional balance.

Connect to nature and feel the beauty of it, admire it, and listen to what your body tells you. Find a park nearby and go for a walk. Keeping in mind that you need to have proper social distancing. It can be a morning walk or maybe an evening walk, totally depends on you. But try some quality time alone.

Listen to music that fills your heart with joy. Things will go well. Listen to your favorite music.

Laugh and make people laugh. Laughing is good exercise. It regulates blood circulation, this results in the growth of oxygen in the blood which will make you feel good. You will feel good as your body starts feeling good. Accept, it is life and you need to enjoy every bit and admire it whether it is dark or sunshine. The worth of good times can only be felt by bad ones. God is great. He has plans. And he does things for a good reason.

Start doing yoga. It helps to maintain focus. You will get most of your answers while doing it. It helps to think correctly and maintains positivity in one’s life.

Connect with your old friends. Remember old times when you all used to laugh around but then don’t make yourself sad by too much remembering those times, joking!!

Tell someone that you are sad. Tell them everything. Talk about your feelings and clear your mind. Let things come out. Talking to your loved ones bring a solution to your problem. Maybe they can bring new opportunities.

If failed consider it as an attempt towards success. Get back to life and work you are the star of your life.

Start writing or reading. This will help you to express without the fear of being judged by someone and you can be yourself.

And before you finish reading this just remember

LIFE IS GOOD, NO MATTER HOW HARD THINGS HIT YOU, AND TIME WILL TAKE CARE OF IT AND THINGS WILL GO WELL.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Try at least some of the measures to live and feel better. It’s your life, love yourself

The real ground reality of the corona treatment

Corona virus, every day its like we are tuned to the same channel spewing the same things like a factory mill on overwork. But be as it may every day, we learn more about this disease that was thrust suddenly to the world, after initially originating from china. There are many a theory afloat that China deliberately kept the onset of this disease a secret to gain from it, and knowing the level the Chinese usually stoop to it would not be farfetched to believe so. Nearly every country is trying to cope up to this disease with drastic level of differences. On one side we have countries like new Zealand who have virtually negligible cases and still effectively trying to combat the situation and on the other end we have countries like USA where the cases have arisen to such a point that their President has announced that he will be slowing down testing to make it seem like the number of cases have dwindled. So where on this spectrum does India lie?

Photo by Anna Shvets on Pexels.com

India is home to a vast population that counts in billions, to safely combat a virus which spreads so easily is a herculean task in itself. However, the front-line workers are continuously working to be the first line of defence, but is it enough. Very often we see on the news and media how heroically our government is fighting the virus, often depicting them as gallant saviours shielding us from the evil virus. The hospitals giving their best in order to help the patients that they get, treating them and sending them back to society so that they may function like before. However,  the ground reality is anything but so, with the influx of corona positive cases of nearly 15000 each day, adding the fact that hospitals are seeing the worst mismanagement that could be done during a pandemic, it is no surprise that to many people going to the hospital seems like a walk towards the gallows. The hospitals launched apps in order to increase their efficiency and help them control the crowd gathering in hospitals, however with the traditional Indian scene of mismanagement this has just poured fuel to the increasing fires. The apps show the hospitals having free beds when there are none, mistreating patients and whatnot. Many a hospital within Delhi, India’s capital city have started to look more like morgue, without enough beds to put the dead bodies in, entire floors have been converted into makeshift morgues with bodies simply piled up unhygienically. This is just the tip of the iceberg that is the inefficiency of the hospital scene in battling corona virus. With the amount that an average corona patient is charged, coupled with the gross mismanagement it can make life a living hell for anyone going to the hospital regarding this issue. During this pandemic bed charges have inflated very much, a general ward bed in super specialty hospitals costs around 11000 a day, due to the covid-19 expenses. The overall amount depends on the time period one I admitted. Adding the mismanagement of the hospital staff into the mix it can go for unnecessarily long periods. Counting in the per day costs of a ventilator in the ICU ward for serious cases it can add an additional 50,000 per day as well. Thus, even if one miraculously survives the ordeal of corona, monetarily they are thrust back way harder than before.

What actions we further take is for everyone to see.

Novak Djokovic and his wife tests positive for Covid-19

The Serbian tennis professional and one of the most dominating players in men’s tennis and the men’s world number one tennis player, Novak Djokovic,33 has been tested positive for covid-19 along with his wife, who has also tested positive for the virus

The World No. 1 is now the fourth tennis player to test positive for the virus after participating in a charity tournament recently which he organised in Serbia and Croatia. Djokovic confirmed the news in a statement and also issued an apology to those who were infected with the virus after playing in the charity tournament.

Earlier in the week the Serb stands widely accused of complacency for organizing an unofficial charity event – in Belgrade, Zadar and Montenegro (subsequently cancelled) – without safety protocols applicable in most other countries and which have prevented resumption of the main Tour until August.

Djokovic expressed regret and sympathy but little contrition in a prepared statement. He was clearly upset that his close friend, Viktor Troicki, and the Serb’s pregnant wife, along with Grigor Dimitrov and Borna Coric – who played each other on Saturday – as well as Dimitrov’s coach and his own fitness trainer had also tested positive. he also repented for each individual case of infection and hopes that all of them recover soon.

With increasing number of covid-19 positive cases all over the world its important to be safe and take the necessary precautions

23 June – World Olympics Day – History…

On the 23rd of June 1894 the International Olympic Committee was founded at the Sorbonne in Paris. Prior to the IOC establishment by Pierre de Coubertin the British physician Dr. William penny Brookes had set up the Wenlock Olympian games in the English market town of Much Wenlock although he always maintained that he had the idea of reviving the ancient Olympic Games for amateur athletes himself, Coubertin entered correspondence with Brooks and benefited from his connections with the Greek government Coubertin was the Secretary General of the Union of French sports associations.

A Brief Look At The Olympics History

Coubertin first proposed establishing a modern Olympic Games at his meeting on the 25th of November 1892 although his enthusiasm was met with little more than general polite applause Coubertin wasn’t deterred and commenced to get the groundwork for what was to become the primary Olympic Congress at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1894. Initially invited participants to a gathering entitled reflections on and propagation of the principles of amateurism Coubertin later changed the name to a congress on the revival of the Olympic Games seventy-nine delegates from nine countries subsequently met at the Sorbonne though Coubertin himself recognized that there was still little enthusiasm for reviving the games. Despite this a vote was held at the last word meeting of the Congress on the 23rd of June that established the International Olympic Committee Coubertin was elected to the role of general secretary with the Greek businessman and writer Demetrius Vikelas because the first president it had been further agreed that the primary modern Olympic Games would happen in Athens in 1896. The second in Paris four years later the IOC has remained liable for the Olympic Games ever since.

Role Change: Soap in COVID-19 Times

What is the first thought that comes to our minds when we hear the word ‘soap’? Of course, it is the one little thing which washes away dirt from the body. For a long time it has been in the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) market as a basic bath product. But recently it is having a makeover of sort. In the COVID-19 times soap has earned fame as an essential health care product in India. The Indian Council for Medical Research and front line health workers are making people aware of the necessity of soaps in fighting the possibility of infection. There has been a huge increase in demand for various kinds of soaps— from the pocket friendly to the expensive.

Initially the official announcement was that we can only protect ourselves if we use hand sanitizer before and after touching anything. This started panic among the common people. They would rush to the nearest stores and start buying bulks of hand sanitizer bottles. It was pointed out that approximately sixty to ninety-five percent of ethanol or isopropanol should be there in hand sanitizers to work effectively. Soon they went missing from the market as the demand far surpassed the supply. Only a handful of people used to carry hand sanitizers all the time. They would be teased by friends that they have OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) syndrome. Now those friends are also carrying hand sanitizers and actually using it all the time.

The next public announcement noted that use of any soap can be effective for protection. Due to the shortage of supply of sanitizers use of normal soaps was being highly recommended. People who did not get hold of sanitizers started to buy basic variety of soaps. The brand range was from Lifebuoy and Savlon to Dove and Palmolive. Healthcare workers advised people to wash hands for minimum twenty seconds every time. They also showed exactly how to do it. The normal hand wash with soap will not have proper result. The soap market was getting unprecedented response.

Various soap and detergent manufacturing companies are now coming up with unique advertisements to promote their brands ‘suitably’ in the pandemic times. Lifebuoy, the “hygiene brand” from Hindustan Unilever, is resorting to public service message showing the important steps to be taken to restrict the infection. It also claimed that Lifebuoy is the “world’s No. 1” to produce handwash and sanitizers with over 99.9% effectiveness against COVID-19. In an innovative approach Lifebuoy soap advertisements and commercials mention that people can also opt for other competitive brands, “whichever soap you have access to”. Proctor &Gamble’s lead brand, Ariel India, has a new socially-oriented commercial about sharing the workload equally at home. It shows the reality of households during the lockdown period where women work not just from home but also work for home. It has started a campaign— #ShareTheLoad for equal sleep. According to its survey, seventy one per cent women doing all household work sleep less than men. The commercial asks men to share the work equally with wives to lessen the pressure during the lockdown.

Dettol has also promoted its handwash to fight the coronavirus outbreak through a commercial. It shows some illustrative graphics as well as a handwashing guide scene shot by cell phones from homes of those involved in the making of the very commercial. Dettol India and NDTV are now collaborating in the mission Swasth India. Many political leaders and celebrities have joined the campaign Swasth Banega Swacch India. The main focus of the campaign is on hygiene and cleanliness. Top celebrities are also participating in the Dettol #HandwashChallenge through social media accounts to influence their fans to follow the official guidelines.

Coronavirus is infecting millions of people in the world. Several ways are being thought of to fight the dreaded virus. It seems that one major way to stay safe and healthy is to fight it with soap. If we take precaution in our own hands we need to have a soap in our hands.

Dexamethasone- Corona Vaccine Update!!!

Finally some good news today dexamethasone is now being called a major breakthrough based on a recent randomized controlled trial in the UK. Dexamethasone also known as Decadron is an example of a glucocorticoid are sometimes referred to as corticosteroids other examples of glucocorticoids include hydrocortisone methyl prednisolone prednisolone, prednisone beta methazone and triamcinolone so glucocorticoids are a class of steroid hormones that bind to the glucocorticoid receptor in the body cortisol aka hydrocortisone is the glucocorticoid.

We naturally make in our body it’s essential for life it regulates or supports various cardiovascular metabolic and homeostatic functions it also plays a big role in our immune system especially when it comes to reducing certain aspects of inflammation this is why we use them all the time in medicine we sometimes give these steroids for asthma copd rheumatologic type diseases and countless more diseases. Sometimes it is also given for steroids for meningitis and also for some forms of cancer we also give them in the early course of severe ards acute respiratory distress syndrome whether that ards is due to infection such as pneumonia or vaping lung injury or whatever the cause for severe ards we typically give methylprednisolone or solumedral at a dose of one milligram per kilogram per day. So, for most people that ends up being around 80 milligrams per day so this is the equivalent of 15 milligrams of dexamethasone the idea here is to suppress the cytokine storm that has taken place meaning that the massive amount of inflammation that causes lung damage and can indirectly cause damage to other organs as well our body naturally makes cortisol in our adrenal glands specifically in the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex the adrenal gland then secretes cortisol into the bloodstream and the cortisol travels to different tissues of the body and then binds to the glucocorticoid receptor inside cells it then stimulates the cell to make more anti-inflammatory proteins and causes the cell to make less pro-inflammatory proteins but giving someone glucocorticoids meaning steroids to someone who has an infection is somewhat of a tricky thing because the fear is that if you suppress the body’s immune system it has the potential to make the infection worse. Sometimes the body’s immune system does more damage than the actual infection for example in cases of meningitis that is due to either streptococcus or tuberculosis we give steroids because the medical evidence shows that they have better outcomes when we do so and giving someone steroids for viral pneumonias like influenza is more controversial because doing so generally leads to worse infection with that said if the viral pneumonia is so bad to the point of causing severe ards most doctors will give steroids in that situation. So this is why, the general medical guidelines so far recommend against giving steroids for covert pneumonia unless the patient has severe ards and we’ve been waiting for randomized controlled trials to come out for steroids in covid and here we are now with this study so in march of 2020 the recovery trial which stands for randomized evaluation of covid-19 therapy was one of the randomized control trials that actually looked at several different potential treatments for covid which included low-dose dexamethasone this trial was done in the UK.

Over 11 500 patients in it so this trial has not been peer reviewed as of has not been published in the journal yet so everything I know so far is based on what’s been released to the general public in this trial over 2100 patients were randomized to receive dexamethasone specifically six milligrams once per day for 10 days and this group was compared with over 4 300 patients that were randomized to the standard care alone so 6 milligrams of dexamethasone is the equivalent of 32 milligrams of methylprednisolone so this is about half the dose we would typically use for someone with severe ards so among the patients who received standard care alone 20-day mortality was highest in those who required mechanical ventilation this was 41 and then intermediate in those patients who required supplemental oxygen only this was mortality rate of 25 percent and the mortality rate was lowest among those who did not require supplemental oxygen in which that mortality rate was 13 for patients who were on mechanical ventilators dexamethasone reduced mortality from 41 percent to 28 percent for patients who needed supplemental oxygen it reduced mortality from 25 percent to 20 percent and there was no benefit among those patients who do not require supplement oxygen in other words if someone only had mild disease there was no point in giving dexamethasone so based on these results one death would be prevented by the treatment of around eight ventilated patients. So that’s the number needed to treat for ventilated patients and then the number needed to treat for the ones who required supplemental oxygen that number needed to treat would be 25 so these preliminary results are significant but it doesn’t mean that dexamethasone is a miracle drug it’s certainly not a cure but it does seem to help based on these numbers index and methazone could be of huge benefit and not just rich countries but poorer countries as well because this drug is very cheap and is widely available so this is great news and very exciting but there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered like what is the ideal dose should we use higher doses in patients who are mechanically ventilated with ards and when will it be approved for use in the united states and we’ll get these answers pretty soon now another.

Interesting question is should we give decadron dexamethasone to people who have mild disease now even though this study didn’t show any benefit the reason why i bring this up is because some people start out with mild disease and then go on to have moderate or severe disease and we have no way of predicting who goes on to do that and also it happens very quickly lots of times someone could be doing just fine and then all of a sudden within hours they all of a sudden are deteriorating and they have severe disease so should we give those patients decadron regardless is there any harm doing so that’s another question that remains to be seen.

Consumer’s Purchasing Behavior modified due to COVID-19

I would like to quote Milton Friedman in reference to the title of the topic – “Many people want the government to protect the consumer. A much more urgent problem is to protect the consumer from the government”. Is this true after all or is it just a perception of one’s biased opinion.

The novel Coronavirus also known as Covid 19 has created chaos all over the world. Everyone is truly suffering, it is as if god has bestowed his curse upon mankind, the days never really seem to end and the night slithers like a sly snake into a delirious day. People have experienced panic in these dooms days and the lifestyle changes will greatly have an effect on the ever evolving economy. The minute you switch on the television and watch the news where we notice that there is no point of positivity to be seen, the number of deaths and the diagnosed patients with corona just seem to be climbing up like jack who climbed the green bean stock which just never really seemed to end. Covid 19 has trapped people into a never ending whirlpool. The monotony of everyday just does not seem to end. We are truly living in an invincible nightmare which seems to never leave our minds even though our minds have already woken up to the grave reality of the present and the unforeseeable future which we will witness. The consumer behavior would be quite depressed due to the lockdown. The current GDP growth rate is 1.9% which has been the lowest in comparison to the last few years.

The economy is facing a critical crisis from the last three months and the consumers are left in a state of confusion. The post Covid- 19 scenario is not going to be sweet after all, we will definitely have to work our way up the ladder to get back to the standard scenario. Corona is going to have a crazy effect on each worker be it the daily domestic cleaner and the delivery men from the different e-commerce sites or the IT personnel and the business man or even the common consumer. And the effect it shall have on the consumers would be long lasting.  One will witness a slump in the graph of consumers purchasing cycle.

In many areas of the industry the overall purchase rate of the products would go down, people will become frugal and cautious consumers. There would definitely be a hike noticed in the graph when it comes to consumption of sanitary products to maintain an adequate hygiene and for decontamination and also one would see a surge in the e-commerce websites selling essential goods as people will become more dependent on goods which are easily accessible via home delivery. One would definitely see a slug in the food industry, especially for food joints, restaurants and cafes etc. , it would be a hard time for them to keep up in the competitive game which the industry holds, as one will see a sink in the number of consumers consuming food products, they would rather prefer healthy home cooked food. The great rush would also be noticed in the number of app downloaders who would prefer online transactions via paytm, google pay and other modes instead of COD and paper money.

As Zomato and Swiggy partnered up with diverse brands to deliver food items and other essential –this caused a plunge in the number of consumers supporting their virtuous work which is shown in the graph.

One would notice a drastic change in consumer behavior where cautious consumers would prefer quality over quantity. People would start preferring private transport over public, they would go the extra mile to seek safety instead of taking a risk as all know Covid 19 won’t be leaving us any time soon. Most startups would have a hard time getting back on track eg- In Bangalore the government allowed 30% of the staff that is the essential staff to work from the office, but the employees denied the orders and instead chose to work from home putting their safety and security above all. In this case one can definitely say “Health is Wealth”.

It will take time for the revival of the economy and to see the surge in the growth rate as people won’t be easily persuaded even after being assured by the government that it is safe to go out. People would definitely be worried incase if a devastating economic crisis would come and hence would not be ready to invest a huge amount of their income in mighty assets like cars or houses or other big investments.

There would be a  drop noticed in the investment rate by consumers, people will not be investing their money in anything, it will take time for the consumers to gain confidence in the market and also to become an assured and hopeful  buyer again in the market, rather one would see a hike in the savings of each family in these crucial times as people will become more conscious and take precautions in the precarious and eye opening times which can occur in the near future and hence will look forward towards saving their money.

One can also notice a surge in app downloads be it newspapers or even apps which provide consumers with groceries and other essential and non-essential items. As the whole situation won’t normalize before August people will start being dependent on services which are offered at their doorstep, people will start becoming dependent on the facilities which companies have to offer from home and it will be the walk- in markets which will be affected the most and face huge losses as they  are dependent on consumers who shop from them on a daily basis . Eg – Most housing societies handover a list to the local grocery store which offers home delivery in the hard times of corona and actually find this facility to be quite comfortable. There has been a surge in the app downloads of applications like Grofers , Big Basket, Flipkart and Amazon etc.

The question to note here is has the situation surrounding corona virus and its effect on the economy and customers really been hyped which has caused fear to grip the minds of every individual or are we looking at a crisis which will be looming on for a long time and will create drastic changes all over the world.

ABDHI UPADHYAY

Keepers of the Dead

My mother always tells me about the devils and the angles, about the good and the bad people, about how we should do good deeds and always walk on the right path. Since, I have heard endless stories about ruthless people, about how has the world become so selfless and mean, staying in their comfort zones, not at all concerned about the outer world and sitting happily and scrolling feeds on Instagram, this signifies that instead of caring about each other, we just want to think about ourselves, about our money and other stuff, but recently I came across a story about the superhumans who are helping the needy people and helping them to attain peace.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal, an NGO in Delhi which is working as the guardians of the earth and performing the last rites of many who have no one else to do so with their own hands. This is not something which everyone can do, it needs guts to perform such tasks during this time of pain and suffering. They have also been distributing masks and food to the needy throughout the day and night.

In a place like Delhi, where people spend crores on marriages, there are some people who don’t have the right to die in peace, with a proper cremation or a burial, says Jitendra Singh Shunty, who founded the NGO in 1996.

Many people and NGO’s have come up to help the needy during this lockdown period, they have lend a helping hand and worked as saviors for these poor people who have lost all hope to live happily, but there are some who follow the wrong path, who have still not understood that this is the time where we have to unite together and help each other, they should not care about their wealth and life because one day we all have to leave this earth and rest in peace. So in order to rest in peace we should let others rest in peace. People like Jitendra Singh are doing a remarkable job. It is not easy to stand for others during this crisis. These self-sacrificing people also deserve praise, but unfortunately not many people know about this because media is busy covering useless topics. They are busy disturbing people who are in extreme agony.
