The International Yoga day

Since 2015 the international yoga day has been celebrated on 21 June every year. Following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. It was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014. It is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance and effects of yoga on the health of the people.

According to the United Nations, yoga can also help with COVID-19 anxiety. Yoga is also playing a significant role in the psycho-social care and rehabilitation of COVID patients in quarantine and isolation. It is particularly helpful in allaying their fears and anxiety.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with several other prominent dignitaries used to organise massive events in order to promote and encourage people towards yoga every year, but since the world witnessed the deadly Corona viruse in 2020, PM Modi urged people to observe the day from their homes itself due to the Corona virus outbreak.

“Yoga is not just about exercise, it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition” said PM Modi on the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly.

World Health Organization has also urged its member states to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity, which is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide, and a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes.

Yoga is divided into six branches namely Hatha yoga, Raj yoga, Karma yoga, Bhakti yoga, Jnana yoga, Tantra yoga. Also there are 7 chakras of yoga styles these are Sahasram chakra, Ajna chakra, Vishuddha chakra, Anahata chakra, Manipura, Svadhishthana and muladhara chakra.

Men who teach yoga are called Yogis and if women teach teach they are called Yoginis . Yog sutra is a 2000 year old book, this is the only book where written evidence of yoga has been found. Yogic philosophy is described in this book.

Human beings are made up of three components which are the intellect, body, and soul. Essentially, in order to fulfill the requirements of these three, we require information, wellbeing, and inward peace respectively. A very happy yoga day to everyone. This day was internationally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 11, 2014. The idea of an international yoga day was proposed by our Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014.

 On that day, a record number of people practiced Yoga in Delhi under the leadership of Mr. Narendra Modi. It was a world record for the highest participation in one single yoga session. This is a great achievement for all of us. More than 170 countries including the USA, China, Canada participated in the event. HISTORY OF YOGA:

Yoga is considered to be an ancient practice that originated 5,000 years ago in India. Yoga was developed as a way to interconnect the mind, body and soul to step closer into enlightenment. As the practice became popular in the west, it became popularized as an exercise and relaxation method, with claims to help the body’s general well-being, alleviate physical injuries and chronic pain.

The idea of International Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, where a resolution to establish June 21 as International Yoga Day was introduced by India’s Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji. The date of June 21 was chosen as it is the Summer Solstice, the day where there is the most sun out of every other day of the year.

2021 Theme: Yoga for well-being

The Day will be marked at a time when COVID-19 pandemic continues to upend lives and livelihoods of people globally. 

Beyond its immediate impact on physical health, the COVID-19 pandemic has also exacerbated psychological suffering and mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, as pandemic-related restrictions continue in various forms in many countries. This has highlighted the urgent need to address the mental health dimension of the pandemic, in addition to the physical health aspects. 

The message of Yoga in promoting both the physical and mental well-being of humanity has never been more relevant. A growing trend of people around the world embracing Yoga to stay healthy and rejuvenated and to fight social isolation and depression has been witnessed during the pandemic. Yoga is also playing a significant role in the psycho-social care and rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients in quarantine and isolation. It is particularly helpful in allaying their fears and anxiety.

How Yoga Day came into existence?

International Day of Yoga is observed globally, to highlight the importance of yoga in the contemporary era, every year on June 21

Back in December 2014, India’s Permanent Representative Ashok Mukherjee introduced the draft resolution regarding the same in the United General Assembly. The draft received tremendous support from the 177 member states and was adopted as a special day. The United Nations on December 11, 2014, proclaimed that June 21 will be marked as International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131.

Notably, International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 as it is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere.
Significance –
Yoga is derived from Sanskrit and it means to join or to unite. Union of body and consciousness is known as Yoga as it helps to maintain a balanced lifestyle in these changing times. It was on June 15, 2015 – the first International Day of Yoga was globally observed.
On this day, India’s ministry of Ayush had organized a program which was attended by eminent dignitaries of around 84 nations along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A total of 35,985 people at Rajghat performed 21 yoga poses, making it the world’s largest yoga class.
