Understanding Luminous Pollution.

Many of us are taking steps to reduce carbon footprints. We responsibly recycle glass, metal, paper, plastic waste each week. However, unknowingly we are contributing to carbon emissions through light pollution which intrudes the delicate ecosystem. Light pollution in many countries is neglected and not regulated.

The excessive, misdirected, or unnecessary use of artificial outdoor lighting is known as Light pollution a.k.a Luminous pollution, or Photopollution. Light pollution alters the color and contrast of the nighttime sky, natural starlight, and disrupts the circadian rhythms, which affects the environment, inhabitants, and astronomy research.

As countries are developing, the need for artificial outdoor lighting has also increased and light pollution has spread into suburban and rural areas.

Types of light pollution:-

1) Light Trespass

2) Glare

3) Sky Glow

4) Light Clutter

What are the causes of light pollution?

Poorly designed residential, commercial and industrial lights contribute significantly to luminous pollution. Also, the use of unnecessary outdoor artificial lights contributes to luminous pollution. Approximately about 30℅ of light is wasted due to poorly designed artificial outdoor lights.

Let’s have a look at the effects of light pollution.

As mentioned above, light pollution has effects on our environment and its inhabitants, and also on astrology. Mentioned below are some of the known effects of light pollution:-

Effect on the environment:                Excessive nighttime lighting releases more than 12 million tons of carbon dioxide every year into the atmosphere, which would take around 702 million trees to absorb.

Luminous pollution also increases air pollution by resisting a natural occurring radical that cleans the air at night, called Nitrate radical.

Effect on wildlife:                                    Light pollution can alter the feeding, mating, sleeping, and migration cycles of the entire wildlife. Wildlife can also feel the disorientation of time due to excessive light pollution.

Effect on energy:                            According to a study by IDA( International Dark-Sky Association) in 2007,  it is estimated that about 30% of the light emitted by public outdoor light fixtures is wasted, which equals 22 TWh/year of energy wastage. That is equivalent to the following:

★About 3.6 million tons of coal per year.

★ About 12.9 million barrels of oil per year.

Effect on Astronomy:            Astronomers are most affected by luminous pollution. As it makes it harder to view and find extraterrestrial bodies for the astronomers even with the aid of a telescope.

Effect on Humans:                                  Like plants and animals, humans are also regulated by circadian rhythms. The rhythms respond to the light and darkness around any organism, which when altered can result in various health hazards like sleeping disorders, depression, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, etc.

How to prevent light pollution?

Given below are some ways to prevent light pollution:-

I) By using warm white lightning as it scatters less.

II) By using shielded outdoor light fixtures.

III) By picking the right exterior light fixtures with the right cutoff angle, which prevents light from escaping above the horizontal plane.

IV) By using motion sensor outdoor fixtures.

V) By using IDA-certified light fixtures.

What is the present status of online journalism in India?

Digital journalism is different from traditional journalism. It is recognized to as being a form of journalism content being posted on the internet. It is in text, audio, video, it does not have any print attribute. It is undeniably much faster than traditional journalism which happens to be the most important reason for its rapid growth presently.

A cup of tea in the morning with the newspaper is the conventional to start mornings in India. But, since the past few years the romance of newspaper may soon be a nostalgic memory. The rapid growth of in mobile internet has coincided with the growth of online journalism as well. Today, there are nearly 500 Million users of the internet. With low-cost devices and better 3G/4G network being offered to the citizens the traditional journalism is slowly giving way to digital journalism.

Mobile applications like Inshorts, TOI (the times of India) mobile app, Quint, Jio News are producing internet content at a very fast pace. They give real time news in no time, which contributes in setting it apart from traditional journalism. Considering that we all have a busy life and don’t necessarily have the time to read a newspaper on a daily basis brevity plays a vital role in our lives today. A print journalist produces an in-depth article, whereas the news content is consumed on a five-inch mobile screen now a days. It is an interactive medium where the reaction and the response of the audience is also quick. Digital journalism is more of analysis than reporting.

There are many loopholes that comes with this as well, often online journalists are in a hurry to publish the news which sometimes overtakes the need to get it right. Anyone can change anything on an online media platform, which leads to less accountability. While the newspapers have the that luxury of time to verify before putting it out.

At the end, though it has a number of loopholes it continues to create an innovation in journalism and also is trying to overtake the position of traditional media. While a striking a balance between transparency, privacy, brevity, accountability, using the technology and data, is what will set apart a news organisation in the new age.

ARE THE BOYS AT FAULT?

WHENEVER A TOPIC ON GENDER OR DISCRIMINATION ARISES, ALL THE ARROWS GET POINTED TOWARDS THE BOYS. THEY ARE CRITISIZED, QUESTIONED AND GET A LOT OF HATE.

I BEING A GIRL , HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP IN A FAMILY WHEREIN MY BROTHERS AND I ARE PUT AT AN EQUAL LEVEL, WE GET THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES, WE GET THE SAME STATUS. BUT IN SOME FAMILIES, THE SCENE IS ABSOLUTELY DIFFERENT. THE FAMILIES CREATE THE DIVIDE ALL BY THEMSELVES, BRING UP THEIR SONS AND DAUGHTERS IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF INEQUALITY AND GAP. THEN HOW CAN WE PUT THE WHOLE BLAME ON THE BOYS?

TO BOYS, THIS DID NOT COME NATURALLY. THEY WERE MADE TO LEARN THIS. THEY WERE MADE TO CONSIDER THEMSELVES AS SUPERIOR. THEN HOW CAN WE BLAME THE BOYS?

THE FAMILIES WHO RAISE CHILDREN WHO BELIEVE IN INEQUALITY ARE AT FAULT. THE MOTHERS WHO MAKE THEIR DAUGHTERS BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE INFERIOR ARE AT FAULT. THE FATHERS WHO CONSIDER THEIR DAUGHTERS TO BE A BURDEN ARE AT FAULT. THE PARENTS WHO CONSIDER THEIR BOYS TO BE AN ASSET AND GIRLS TO BE A LIABILITY ARE AT FAULT.

WE DO WHAT WE ARE TAUGHT. WE BELIEVE IN WHAT WE ARE TOLD. WE ACCEPT WHAT WE SEE.

THOSE WHO HAVE SUCH MENTALITY WONT BE ABLE TO CHANGE IT INSTANTLY. BUT FOR US ; WHO CAN UNDERSTAND THE ILL-EFFECTS OF THE DIFFERENCE/ DISCRIMINATION ; CAN MAKE OUR YOUNGER GENERATION UNDERSTAND THIS.

LET US STOP THE BLAME GAME AND LOOK FORWARD TO CREATE A WORLD WHERE THERE WOULD NOT BE SENTENCES LIKE ‘GIRL CHILD IS A BUDEN’, ‘ ARE YOU A GIRL? IF NOT, THEN WHY ARE YOU CRYING’ , ‘BOYS ARE SUPERIOR’ AND ‘ YOUR ARE THE MAN/ WOMEN OF THE FAMILY.

Brazil vs Peru (COPA AMERICA SEMIS) Preview

Team News & Tactics

Brazil

The absence of Gabriel Jesus does not bode well for a Brazil team that might lack productivity going forward. Nevertheless, Tite has no option but to replace him, with Lucas Paqueta likely to come in, having scored the winner in the quarter-final against Chile.

Paqueta should operate in the number ten position, allowing Neymar and Richarlison to play out wide. The Brazil attack will be spearheaded by Neymar, even though Roberto Firmino is likely to operate in the number nine position.

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Danilo, Silva, Marquinhos, Lodi; Fred, Casemiro; Richarlison, Paqueta, Neymar; Firmino

Peru

While Brazil misses Gabriel Jesus, Peru will have to make do without their key frontman Andre Carrillo following his dismissal in the quarter-final. His absence at right-wing should give Alex Valera an opportunity to impress.http://assets.vlitag.com/plugins/safeframe/src/html/r.htmlAd by Valueimpression

The 27-year-old is expected to form Peru’s creative trifecta alongside Sergio Pena and Christian Cueva as they look to provide the supply for top-scorer Gianluca Lapadula. Santiago Ormeno is a potential alternative for Lapadula or even Valera, while Raziel Garcia is another option.

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Gallese; Corzo, Santamaria, Ramos, Trauco; Yotun, Tapia; Valera, Pena, Cueva; Lapadula

Prediction

Brazil 2-0 Peru

After stumbling to a 4-0 defeat in the group stages, Peru are expected to provide a much more resilient display on Monday, knowing what’s at stake. However, without their key frontman Andre Carrillo, they might struggle to breach the star-studded Brazilian defence that showcased excellent solidity in the quarter-final affair against Chile.

Agriculture

When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization.”

— Daniel Webster

Introduction

It all started thousand of years ago , when the human civilization came into existence . Agriculture was a key to survival . People were farming for there domestic purpose , not for the others .

As the civilization started to grow accustomed of agriculture , they grew food in surplus that enabled people to live in cities. Plants were independently cultivated in at least 11 regions of the world.

The development of agriculture enabled the human population to grow many times larger than could be sustained by hunting and gathering.

It was the beginning of different civilization in different parts of the World. From those civilizations , one of them was our’s The Indus Valley Civilization . Vedic literature provides some of the earliest written record of agriculture in India. Rigveda hymns , describes plowing, fallowing, irrigation, fruit and vegetable cultivation.

Some of the ancient and historical evidence suggests rice and cotton were cultivated in the Indus Valley.

Agriculture : In India and World today .

India ranks second worldwide in farm outputs. As per 2018, agriculture employed Indian work force and contributed 17–18% to country’s GDP.

In 2016, agriculture and allied sectors like animal husbandry, forestry and fisheries accounted for 15.4% of the GDP (gross domestic product) with about 41.49% of the workforce in 2020.India ranks first in the world with highest net cropped area followed by US and China. The total agriculture commodities export was US $ 3.50 billion in March – June 2020.

Agriculture is the primary source of livelihood for about 58% of India’s population. Share of agriculture and allied sectors in gross value added (GVA) of India at current prices stood at 17.8 % in FY20.

During 2019-20 crop year, food grain production reached a record of 296.65 million tonnes. In 2020-21, Government of India is targeting food grain production of 298 million tonnes.

India is among the 15 leading exporters of agricultural products in the world. Agricultural export from India reached US$ 38.54 billion in FY19 and US$ 35.09 billion in FY20.

Agriculture is an important industry in the United States. The agriculture industry, which includes both crops and livestock, is responsible for producing most of the world’s foods and fabrics. Agriculture impacts so many things that it’s hard to imagine a world without this important industry.

Schemes and Initiatives

Due to the high requirement of agriculture . It is important for the government to take initiatives and provide better infrastructure to the farmers. However , the required level of investment for the development of marketing, storage and cold storage infrastructure is estimated to be huge.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), established in 1905, was responsible for the search leading to the “Indian Green Revolution” of the 1970s. The Union Minister of Agriculture is the president of the ICAR. The Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute develops new techniques for the design of agricultural experiments, analyses data in agriculture, and specialises in statistical techniques for animal and plant breeding.

Schemes by government for Indian agriculture :

  • Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme.
  • Rainfed Area Development Programme (RADP)
  • Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)
  • Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY)
  • National Agriculture Market (e-NAM)
  • Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maandhan yojana.
  • Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)
  • Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme.
  • Pashu Kisan Credit Card Scheme.
  • PM-Kisan Scheme.

Conclusion

Agriculture sector is one of the prominent sector in India as well as all over the world . India is becoming self – sufficient in pulses and other crops .

Gone are the days , when India was unable to provide sufficient amount of food to the citizens . Gone are the days , when people used to think agriculture was not as important as other sectors . Gone are the days , when people used to think less of farmers . And gone are the days , when people were less educated about agriculture.

Farming is a profession of hope.

IS GIRL CHILD A BURDEN ?

TO A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD, GIRL CHILD IS CONSIDERED TO BE A BURDEN. EDUCATING A GIRL IS BELIEVED TO BE OF NO USE AS, PEOPLE THINK THAT ULTIMATE GOAL OF A WOMEN IS TO WORK FOR HER FAMILY AND DO THE HOUSEHOLD CHORES.

YOUNG GIRLS ARE WEDDED OFF AT A VERY YOUNG AGE AND THIS TOO BECOMES AN ACHIEVEMENT FOR A ;LOT OF PEOPLE. HEAVY DOWRY IS DEMANDED FROM GIRL’S FATHER , AS IT ASSUMED THAT THE GROOM’S FAMILY IS TAKING OVER THE BURDEN OF THE BRIDE’S FAMILY BY GETTING THEIR SON MARRIED HIS DAUGHTER.

IN THE PAST, IN MANY VILLAGES, IF A GIRL WAS CHILD BORN, SHE WAS KILLED OR WAS DISOWNED. IN A COUNTRY WHERE WE OFFER PRAYER’S TO GODDESSES, THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS A GIRL CHILD IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE.

WOMEN’S ARE RAISED TO BE AN “ADARSHWAADI AND SANSKAARI” { RESPECTFUL , OBEDIENT AND KIND } WIFE. THEY ARE TAUGHT THAT THEIR GOAL IS TO NURTURE CHILDREN AND WORK LIKE A SLAVE TO THEIR HUSBANDS. THEY ARE TAUGHT TO SPEAK LESS AND OBEY THE WORDS OF HER IN-LAWS. THEY ARE CONSIDERED TO BE LESS ABLED THAN BOYS. THEY ARE SHOWCASED AS WEAK AND FRAGILE.THEY ARE CAGED AND ARE MADE TO CONFINE IN THEIR HOMES. THEY ARE NOT OFFERED ENOUGH OPPORTUNITIES, THEN WHY ARE THEY UNDERESTIMATED?

IN TODAY’S TIME, WOMEN ARE WORKING IN PACE WITH THE MAN. THEY ARE TAKING CARE OF THEIR FAMILIES BETTER THAN THE MAN.

WHY CONSIDER THEM TO BE A BURDEN ? WHY NOT GIVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE THEIR STRENGTH ?WHY? BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT SHE IS MUCH MORE ABLED THAN YOUR BOYS? THESE QUESTIONS MIGHT SEEM QUITE ROUGH BUT ANSWER TO THESE WOULD CLEAR AS TO WHY ARE THE GIRLS CONSIDERED TO BE A BURDEN.

SHE IS NOT A BURDEN. SHE IS AN ASSET. LET HER LIVE HER LIFE ON HER OWN TERMS. LET HER LIVE. LET HER FLY, CAUSE SHE HAS THE ABILITY TO REACH THE SKY.

Feed them Pawfectly!

What if I offer you crores and crores of money and ask you to stay away from food for days in return? Will you do it? Can you survive without eating? I’m guessing it’s a NO!
Food is one of our necessities. Here ‘our’ not only includes humans but also animals. For animals food (including water) is their only requirement to survive but unfortunately, they don’t even get that.
You’ll have seen dogs, cats, cows, and various other animals come behind us while we walk on the street. They don’t walk behind you to harass you they come to you with hope in their eye. They just need food and a little love rather than getting hit by a stick. Being cruel to them won’t make you superior instead having empathy towards them and treating them like humans will.

Every mother loves to feed their children and would cook many dishes for them but don’t forget those mothers who search for food in a heap of garbage every day just to survive.
Do they deserve this? Of course not!
Nobody deserves this! Then why do they have to do this for their survival?

God has not given them a voice to speak but their eyes are enough to convey their sorrow.
Just feed an animal and see what they do for you in return. Trust me! you’ll be God in their eyes

Things to keep in mind before feeding a stray animal
 • Avoid sweets
Sweets take a lot of time to digest and can result in various health issues in them and can also affect their immunity.

 • Avoid fried and spicy food
Animals might not find fried and spicy food attractive. Avoid feeding them leftovers. Fried and spicy food can lead to many health problems

 • Avoid allergic food
Animals can be allergic to some food items just like humans. Always research before feeding.

 • Do not Overfeed
Every animal has their capacities to eat. Do not force them to eat more, it might make them ill.

 • Avoid plastic bags
Never give them food in plastic bags. They might stick their head inside it and cause breathing problems. Try using plastic bowls.

 • Serve them water
Water is as important as food for them. They can find their water but it’s best to serve them which will make their job much easier.

What to do with kitchen waste?

Our kitchen generates lot of waste throughout the day whether it is vegetable peel, leftover meal or rotten vegetables and fruits. All of these waste goes into dustbin.

According to report 60% of waste comes from kitchen. These waste gets mixed and collected in landfills. These waste releases methane gas which is a greenhouse gas. This pollutes air and water.

We can use these kitchen waste to make compost. Nowadays people buy fertilizers from market but what if we use kitchen waste to make compost. Isn’t this amazing way to save Earth as well as money ?

How to make compost :-

First we need is kitchen waste called as green waste. Drained the excess water from it. These waste are rich in nitrogen. Second we need is dried leaf called brown waste. Third microbes ( an accelerator ). Fourth is container you can use any container either of earthen pot or anything as per your ease.

Put dried leaves in the lower of container above it spread green kitchen waste add some accelerator i.e; microbes on top of it. Again put another layer of dried leaves and close the lid of container. That’s one day waste. On second day repeat the same process. Once in 4-5 days mix it well so that it can absorb oxygen. Oxygen is essential for its breakdown.

When container get full keep it aside for 20-30 days. After 30 days compost is ready to use. We can this compost to nourish the plants and grow whatever we want.

GAP YEAR

Gap year time : A Life Changing Opportunities.

First, we have to know what is a Gap Year ?

Gap year is a break time where all the career aspirants think and take a step ahead for learning new skills or looking better ways to track back in career line, basically it’s about the career decision time to figure out the new steps.

Many people take gap year to do internships, preparing for their upcoming competitive exams. Some people also take a break from career to get away from their busy path and enjoy their time .

Whenever anyone is stuck and stressing about what to do in their career basically they take a gap to figure out their choices. It’s better not to take rush and settle down for their decision making time. Some people also start learning about interesting skills, taking care of their mental health and stop pressuring themselves.

Many people feel scared to take a gap year because of their family reputation or you can say comparison with others and also from pressure they can’t able to decide their path and start working against their choice. And some people continue their study without gaining any interest just because of their fear and mental stress.

For my opinion Gap Year is really important for decision making, we should not feel ashamed or blame ourselves for taking gap , it is very major to know our interest and shape it for our better life.

The Spanish Inquisition: A Turbulent Time

What was the Spanish Inquisition?

The Spanish inquisition was a judicial institution that prevailed in Spain from 1478 to 1834. It was set up through the Catholic church to root out and punish any heresy (religious beliefs that differed from those prevailing at the time, in this instance Catholicism) being practiced in the country. In each region of Spain, tribunals comprising of Catholic officials were set up to perform the functions of the inquisition. This system was aimed at consolidating power and establishing control in the country, but today the reputation of the inquisition is that it was an extremely brutal and turbulent time in Spanish society.

What happened during this time?

The Spanish inquisition is a well-known historical event but for reasons that should not be praised. It marked a period of violence and intolerance. The people working for inquisitions were called inquisitors. They would arrive in a town, and announce their presence to all the townspeople. Any heretics present in the town would be given a chance to confess, and thereby receive punishment which ranged from whipping to pilgrimage and repentance. Any person who was accused of being a heretic was forced to admit to it, and in case they did not voluntarily confess, they would be subject to violent torture and even execution. More often than not, people were victims of false allegations of being a heretic, but there was no formal court procedure or trial and the mere suspicion of being a heretic was enough to enforce severe punishment. Once a person was accused, even if falsely, there was no escaping either torture, imprisonment, or death. So, many people would end up confessing early on, even if they weren’t actual heretics, to say themselves from any severe consequences later on. This shows how much fear and tyranny was present in society at that time.

This period also represented one of xenophobia and parochialism. When the inquisition began, Spain was a very diverse country, both ethically and religiously. Many different communities like the Jews, Muslims and Christians all lived in harmony in the same regions. The objective of the inquisition was to eradicate such people from Spain who did not identify with the Catholic church and its beliefs. For more than 350 years, people who were not Catholics were subject to torture and exile from Spain.

We can clearly draw a comparison here to Nazi Germany under Hitler’s dictatorship, where only white people of the Aryan race were allowed to live in the country while others were deported or killed in cold blood. In both cases the victims were subject to inhumane torture and suffering. Also, the Jewish people were the major victims in both situations. Under the inquisition, Spanish Jews were forced to either convert to Catholicism or leave Spain entirely. Even those who converted, called the ‘Conversos’ were not safe as they were constantly under suspicion of secretly practicing Judaism while using Catholicism as a disguise. Eventually focus shifted to Muslims converting to Christianity to save themselves, called the ‘Moriscos’. In 1609 they were all ordered to leave Spain entirely.

Any punishments to be given were done so in public for everyone to see, and they were called ‘acts of faith’. It was meant to show the public what it means to defy the Catholic church and their beliefs, and why they should not follow any other ideology. In the worst of cases, where there were unrepentant heretics, they would even burn them alive at the stake for all of the public to witness.

Conclusion

Eventually in 1834, the inquisition was put to an end and the Catholic church’s power diminished in Spain. However, we cannot disregard the damage that had been caused in the 350 odd years. Thousands of people were tortured, killed or exiled from their homes in Spain. They were stripped of their land and wealth, and left homeless and poor. Many religious minorities had to flee from Spain, leaving behind their home land and all that they knew, while those that remained faced discrimination and suffering at the hands of the inquisitors. Not only mainland Spain, but even the Spanish territories like those in America had their own smaller inquisitions that took their own tolls (Mexico, Peru). However, as time progressed, so did political thinking, and Spain realized its mistake in introducing such a violent system and removed it.
