Figuring out what really mattered

Perfect as the wing of a bird maybe, it will never enable the bird to fly if unsupported by air.”

                                                                                                                                               –Ivan Pavlov

Upon School, I knew to describe the electronegativity trends on the periodic table and identify when to use logarithmic differentiation to simplify a derivative problem. Despite knowing how to execute these very particular tasks, I currently fail to make a profit from stocks, or how to obtain a good insurance policy. A factory-model school system that has been left essentially unchanged for nearly a century has been the driving force in my educational development.

I have been conditioned to complete tasks quickly, efficiently, and with an advanced understanding. I measured my self-worth as my ability to outdo my peers academically, thinking my scores were the only aspect that defined me, and they were. I was getting everything right. Then, I ran for the IPM exam for entry into an IIM and failed. Rejection. I didn’t even make it past the first round of cuts. How could that be? I was statistically a smart kid with a good head on my shoulders, right? Surely someone had to have made a mistake. Little did I know, this was my first exposure to meaning beyond numbers.

I discovered I had been wrongfully measuring my life through numbers–my football statistics, my test scores, my age, my height (I’m short). I had the epiphany that oh wait, maybe it was my fault that I had never prioritized inter-social skills, or open-mindedness (qualities my fellow candidates possessed). Maybe it was me. I resolved to alter my mindset, taking a new approach to the way I lived. From now on I would emphasize qualitative experiences over quantitative skills.

I had never been more uncomfortable. I forced myself to learn to be vulnerable by asking questions even if I was terrified of being wrong. My proficiency in using data evidence could not teach me how to bargain to crack a deal, nor could my test scores show me how to be more open to criticism. The key to all of these skills, I was to discover, happened to be learning from those around me. Turns out, I couldn’t do everything by myself.

The process of achieving this new mindset came through the cultivation of relationships. I became fascinated by the new perspectives each person in my life could offer if I really took the time to connect. Not only did I improve my listening skills, but I began to consider the big-picture consequences my engagements could have. People interpret situations differently due to their own cultural contexts, so I had to learn to pay more attention to detail to understand every point of view. I took on the state of what I like to call collaborative independence, and to my delight, I wasn’t selected from an IIM but was selected for NMIMS which was good enough for my bachelor’s

Not long ago, I would have fallen apart in the presence of any uncertainty. As I further accept and advance new life skills, the more I realize how much remains uncertain in the world. After all, it is quite possible my future job doesn’t exist yet, and that’s okay. I can’t conceivably plan out my entire life at the age of 19, but what I can do is prepare myself to take on the unknown, doing my best to accompany others. Hopefully, my wings continue to enable me to fly, but it is going to take more than just me and my wings; I have to continue putting my faith in the air around me.

Freelancing hits success

In the modernized world, many hang back from working under anyone for a long term and wish to create their work independently and just offer their potentials to an entity. They are the freelancers who are always self employed and not necessarily committed to a particular employer long time. Freelancer is an independent worker who earn money on a per job or per task basis for a short term work. This has become a well known career choice for a lot of people these times. Freelancing professionals work in a wide area of fields across many industries and companies. Although there are plentiful opportunities available for freelancing, the most popular fields are content writing, designing, sales & marketing, branding, recruiting, web development, teaching, copywriting, photography, SEO, social media. The prominent fact is that you should possess the requisite skills for the job/project and make a good income out of it.

Perks of freelancing and success rate

Where many other jobs demand constraints for time and work places, Freelancers can work anytime and from anywhere with the freedom to set your own pace, take projects for several companies, so freelancing offers many flexibilities which helps to maintain a good work-life balance. The benefit of being a freelancer is that you are not restricted to a specific 9 to 5 schedule and choose work in line with your preferences and choose clients/ companies you want to work with, which allows you to pursue in your own interests and passion. According to a payoneer’s data, the average freelancer worked 36 hours a week at a rate of $21per hour, for an annual pretax salary of more than $39,000. This was significantly higher than the average salary for non-freelancers in most of the countries in the survey.

The money you make is utterly dependent upon the quality of work and how much effectually you work. While people argue that freelancing can impact a person’s financial security and long term career goals, freelances find their work to be obliging in making their lives less stressful. They have the authority to decide and demand for the the wages to be charged on their projects. Many freelancers are paid on hourly basis, so if they work long hours they will be able to make more finances. Employees tend to leave the jobs due to the the discontentment with the management, but in freelancing you work with freedom without anybody to constantly keep breathing down on your neck. With people searching out for an enduring job to obtain more income they spend half their life, freelancing makes it more accessible for people to gain good income by investing your potentials and skills in a short time. It may takes years for some people to get promoted to a higher level and have a hike in their salary but freelancing makes you get closer to the income you dreamt of in a short time with your quality work.

On the other side this may seem unstable for some without any steady income over the years. You may perceive a fluctuation in the workload, where you’ll be swamped with work one month but not the same the next month like a feast- famine cycle. It carries an unpredictable nature of work and wages with no paid time off or medical leave. Many people are susceptible to turn away from this because of such drawbacks. If you really staunch and determined about being a freelancer you should be disciplined, consistent and organized. You should engage yourself in multiple projects, never become distracted or unstable in the field. Keep a track of your work and manage them efficiently. However the work may be unsteady you should be able to market yourself. There is a just fine line between the advantages and snags, here the perks of freelancing greatly outweigh the drawbacks. If you are good at a job sky is the limit to how much you can sprout your business.

Football as an emerging sport and a career option in India

Sports, in India has highly been underrated since ages. It has always been considered as a leisure and just a means of recreation but not at all a career option. People do love seeing sports on the television but never did they motivate someone to go into that field. They had their own reasons for it. First of all, sports was never a promising career in the ancient India. They thought it as out of reach and therefore it became underrated. Cricket was the only sport which successfully gathered a huge number of fans India. This happened highly after the Indian premier league was introduced. It became the talk of the town and was something which almost everyone would emotionally connect to.

Football which has always been one of the most interesting sports but was meandering around with no defined path to follow, so it never came into light. But now it has risen above the threshold of a mere game and has become a way of life. India, which was once a sleeping football giant, has woken up with a bang.

ATK Mohun Bagan’s Sumit Rathi Keen to Use ISL as ‘Launchpad’ to Play Abroad

The rise of football in India had began long ago when a club named Mohul Bagan estd around 1890s became the first team to win IFA shield before independence. Later in the year 2013, with the establishment of Indian Super league, football gained a drastic craze among the youngsters in the similar manner as IPL did. People started to connect emotionally. They sprawled near the ticket counters to get the tickets to the atches of their favourites. This growing trend since then hasn’t slowed down yet. ISL became a sudden hit and our players got high recognition through this. Youngsters now have started considering football too as a promising career in India. Every year there are many youngsters getting selected to prove their calibre and are reaching heights of fame all around the world. ISL has led people to watch and love football to a level that nobody could have ever thought. It is through this, that Indian football team has started getting support from their own people. ISL in partnership with Reliance Industries has come a long way and has achieved many milestones. The growing popularity of football in India has prompted foreign leagues to engage Indian enthusiasts through customised training and outreach.

For the first time 2017 Fifa U-17 World Cup, broke previous attendance records with over 1.3 million spectators. As a reult India won the hosting rights of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2020. India who had never earlier got to play FIFA qualifiers is now capable enough for it and it is not too far when we the people of India will see our country play FIFA.

How to W.R.A.P decisions in Life

Every living being in this universe is subjected to make decisions for their survival – be it an ant and or a humpback whale. Fortunately, humans are the only beings gifted with the power of discrimination of understanding what is right or wrong for us and making a decision accordingly. Decisions can either be positive or otherwise but the quality of your decisions will determine how deeply they would impact your life.

It's A WRAP - Better Decision Making

Chip and Dan Heath, in their book ‘ Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work’, talk about a Framework called W.R.A.P for making better decisions
WRAP consists of four elements:
W- Widen your options
R- Reality test your assumptions
A- Attain distance before deciding
P- Prepare to be wrong

Widen your options

There is a misconception that having a lot of options can lead to confusion and is as same as seeing only the big picture. So, people narrow their frames of you and often lose possible options that could have worked better for them.
You can start finding more options by creating a mindset where none of the options you are considering is available. What else can you do? Think about it and be surprised about how many new options crop up!

Reality test your assumptions

While encountering a decision-making situation, we all tend to select the options that support our preconceived beliefs and actions. But that might not work all the time.
We can overcome this by seeking out relevant data that might redeem or discard the options at hand. Also, for example, if you have a piece of work or a product to be published you can sample your work ok for a response from a small group first instead of jumping right into the market. Reason out to yourself why you would want to make a particular choice.

Attain distance before deciding

We often let our short-term emotions cloud our rationality and take hasty decisions. It is imperative to have a well-settled mind before making an important life decision.
Try broadening your point of view. Ask yourself what a reliable third person would do in such circumstances- step into your friend’s shoes or think like someone who you look up to. This can give you a fresh perspective of the situation at hand and make you take a better decision.

Prepared to be wrong

Voice Blog: In Order To Be Original, Prepare to Be WRONG - Ben Francia

We predict a lot in our life. What if a decision that you made is based on such predictions and things actually don’t turn up the way you wanted? What then? You should be ready to acknowledge the decision’s flaw.
Think about working back from a possible future. For example, suppose your work has been published and was poorly received. Think about how the work could have been made better so that you really don’t have to face that situation. Come up with backup ideas that can act like your ‘insurance’ and protect you in case things go the other way.

The next time when you faced a situation, remember that the process is as important as the decision itself. You are the master of your life- so make sure that the decision you made don’t make your life different from what you wanted.
Trust the process!

Getting a Job in Google.

Globalization!

Globalization is the word used to describe the growing interdependence of the world’s economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and information.

Globalization is driven by the convergence of political, cultural and economic systems that ultimately promote — and often necessitate — increased interaction, integration and dependency amongst nations.

The more that disparate regions of the world become intertwined politically, culturally and economically, the more globalized the world becomes.

These international interactions and dependencies are enabled and accelerated by advances in technology, especially in transportation and telecommunications. In general, money, technology, materials and even people flow more swiftly across national boundaries today than they ever have in the past. The flow of knowledge, ideas and cultures is expediated through Internet communications.

There are three types of globalization:

1. Economic globalization. This type focuses on the unification and integration of international financial markets, as well as multinational corporations that have a significant influence on international markets.
2. Political globalization. This type deals mainly with policies designed to facilitate international trade and commerce. It also deals with the institutions that implement these policies, which can include national governments as well as international institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization.
3. Cultural globalization. This type focuses on the social factors that cause cultures to converge — such as increased ease of communication and transportation, brought about by technology.
